Shownotes

Just a quick note to say Merry Christmas and encourage you to take a moment to stop and reflect.

Here are my recommendations for some reflection:

Collect up your year, month by month what were the learnings, achievements and challenges (use your diary to help)

Ask yourself these questions:

1. what do you need to let go of from 2023?

3. what do you need to bring with you into 2024?

4. what do you want to create in 2024?

4. what does fulfilment look like for you?

Merry Christmas and happy reflecting! I will see you on the 29th for the new series of the Business of Psychology!

Transcripts

Speaker:

Hello and welcome to a special episode

of The Business of Psychology podcast.

2

:

So I'm putting out this episode

as a little bit of a trailer

3

:

for the new series, which is

starting on the 29th of December.

4

:

A betwixtmas start, as I like to call it,

but before we get stuck into a new series.

5

:

It felt important to me to spend a

moment to pause and to reflect on the

6

:

year that I've had and encourage you to

reflect on the year that you've had too.

7

:

Because for a lot of us I think

:

8

:

It's been a really big challenge for

me and I will admit A couple of weeks

9

:

ago when I was starting to think

about planning for the new year,

10

:

I was feeling pretty low about it.

11

:

But I decided to throw myself into

some journaling practice, into some

12

:

meditation practice, and in doing that

I really found my enthusiasm again.

13

:

For my work, for this podcast, . So I

really encourage you to do it, especially

14

:

if you don't feel like it, especially

if you are feeling at the moment like

15

:

Maybe this hasn't been your best year.

16

:

Maybe there were goals that

you weren't able to, to meet.

17

:

Maybe there were personal struggles which

you felt were insurmountable at the time.

18

:

I promise you, by reflecting on those

things and your learnings from those

19

:

things, you will discover what You want to

do in:

20

:

and when we allow ourselves to do that,

that is when the enthusiasm comes back.

21

:

So a little bit of nurture goes

a very long way and I wanted

22

:

to jump in here and give you an

excuse, really, to do that with me.

23

:

So, the first thing I recommend

is a process that I call

24

:

collecting up your year.

25

:

And this involves getting your diary out,

whether that is physical or electronic,

26

:

and looking month by month at what

you did, the challenges you faced, the

27

:

achievements that you reached and the

learnings that you took from each month.

28

:

And I have to do that looking at my

diary physically because there is no way

29

:

that I would remember it all otherwise.

30

:

And when I didn't do this formally,

when I just kind of thought

31

:

back, I found that there was a

real bias to what I remembered.

32

:

And mostly what I was remembering were

goals that I set that became unrealistic.

33

:

So as some of you who are in the

membership community or have been

34

:

students or coaching clients with me

this year will know, I had some real

35

:

struggles in my family life this year.

36

:

Two of my children have had big

diagnoses this year with neurodivergence

37

:

and they've really struggled.

38

:

With school, and lots of, lots of

challenges this year that have meant

39

:

that I've had to reduce my working time.

40

:

I've had to find a level of flexibility,

both psychological and practical, that

41

:

I didn't know was possible before.

42

:

And it's really drawn.

43

:

A loss of resilience out of me

that I didn't know was there.

44

:

And times have been dark.

45

:

But not all the times have been dark.

46

:

And when I looked back, month by month,

I was able to see that there has been

47

:

so much achievement and so much learning

in amongst those challenges this year

48

:

that I think it would be a real shame.

49

:

If I hadn't taken the time to

go back and find those things.

50

:

So I really encourage you to do this

collecting up process month by month.

51

:

Look for those challenges,

achievements and learnings and you

52

:

will be amazed at what you find.

53

:

The second phase of good

reflection, I think, is to ask

54

:

yourself some core questions.

55

:

And I've just collected the

three questions that I personally

56

:

have found the most useful.

57

:

And then there's one more, which

leads us into the next series of the

58

:

business of psychology very nicely.

59

:

So the first question I really

recommend asking yourself is what

60

:

do you need to let go of from 2023?

61

:

So you've had a good look back, you've

looked at the good, the bad, the ugly.

62

:

What can you leave here?

63

:

What do you not need to take

with you into the next year?

64

:

Then ask yourself, what do you

need to bring with you into:

65

:

What were those key learnings?

66

:

What did you find out about yourself,

the world, your work, your family,

67

:

that you want to take with you,

put in your backpack if you like,

68

:

and take with you into 2024?

69

:

What do you want to create in 2024?

70

:

Maybe when you've done that collecting

process, and you've looked at:

71

:

there's something missing, there's

something that you need in order to be

72

:

living your life according to your values.

73

:

Maybe there's a new value that you

didn't have before, but now needs

74

:

to take centre stage in your life.

75

:

What do you want to create in 2024?

76

:

And finally, the question which is

going to lead us into the new series

77

:

of the Business of Psychology.

78

:

What does fulfilment look like for you?

79

:

The next series is all about

finding fulfilment in your work.

80

:

Because I have realised realised that

this needs to be a top priority for me.

81

:

If i'm only able to work for a

limited amount of time in the week,

82

:

I want to make sure that all of the

work I do is as professionally and

83

:

personally fulfilling as possible.

84

:

So I have I am diving into

fulfillment and trying to call more

85

:

of that into my life this year.

86

:

But it looks different for all of

us, so think about what that might

87

:

look like for you in the new year.

88

:

Is it about training?

89

:

Is it about research?

90

:

Is it about more one to one

work, less one to one work?

91

:

It's going to look different for all

of us, but it is so important to get a

92

:

clear idea of what that means for you.

93

:

And if you find that difficult, by

any chance, which most of us do,

94

:

I really hope that the new series

of The Business of Psychology is

95

:

going to give you some inspiration.

96

:

The reason I decided to launch the

series, during Betwixtmas, is this is

97

:

often the time of year when I find myself

feeling really inspired and desperate

98

:

to read and learn and think about.

99

:

What other psychologists and mental

health professionals have been doing that

100

:

maybe I could bring into some of my work.

101

:

So I'm really hoping that this

new series is going to bring

102

:

you that feeling of inspiration.

103

:

We've got interviews with authors,

people creating online courses.

104

:

We've got people working in.

105

:

With all different ways with all different

specialisms telling us how they got to

106

:

where they are and where they're planning

to go next and I'm really hoping that

107

:

that's gonna bring you some of the

enrichment that it's brought me over the

108

:

last few weeks because I could not have

enjoyed recording those episodes more.

109

:

So with that I'm gonna wish you a

very Merry Christmas and I will see

110

:

you on the 29th for our new series.

111

:

Happy reflecting.
