Ghia - Why I tune into the seasons, naming the moons, walking with Jesus

Transcripts

Ghia:

Hi everyone.

2

:

This is Ghia and I'm this week's host for

the creative, spiritual journey podcast.

3

:

I want to start off with this little poem.

4

:

My mom sent me a few days ago.

5

:

It goes.

6

:

The future lies before you

like a field of fallen snow.

7

:

Be careful how you tread it

for every step will show.

8

:

I love that.

9

:

It creates in my mind, a

picture of the winter season.

10

:

And it's an interesting way to

think about how and where we walk.

11

:

Especially in the winter when

our tracks will show maybe more

12

:

in this season than any other.

13

:

In my quest to walk deliberately with

God, I want to live more seasonally.

14

:

Meaning I want to live

in tune with the seasons.

15

:

Or maybe a better way to say it

would be to tune into the seasons.

16

:

I believe the seasons are a gift from God.

17

:

They aren't accidental.

18

:

When Alma was talking to Cora whore

as recorded and Alma 30, he said

19

:

all things to note, there is a God.

20

:

Yay.

21

:

Even the earth and all things

that are upon the face of it.

22

:

Yay.

23

:

And it's motion.

24

:

Yea.

25

:

And also the planets, which

move in their regular form.

26

:

Do witness that there

is a Supreme creator.

27

:

That's beautiful.

28

:

All things to note, there is a God.

29

:

The beauty of the natural

world, isn't an accident.

30

:

And for that matter, neither is the

harshness or brutality of nature.

31

:

I love nature, mountains, desert seas,

rivers, animals, sunsets, stargazing.

32

:

But the Earth's motion, the seasons.

33

:

They have particularly

grabbed my attention.

34

:

They are dynamic.

35

:

Repetitive and predictable,

but never stagnant.

36

:

They play into our energy, what we

eat, what time we get up, how we dress.

37

:

They permeate our lives.

38

:

I believe the seasons have

meaning and purpose and that

39

:

we can use them to our benefit.

40

:

So when I say, I want to

tune into the seasons.

41

:

I have a bunch of thoughts about what that

means as well as expectations and goals.

42

:

I expect this list to evolve and change.

43

:

But right now, when I say I want to live

seasonally, here's what I'm thinking.

44

:

As far as possible, I

want to eat seasonally.

45

:

I want to tune into the energy of the

seasons and align my energy with them.

46

:

I want to celebrate Christ in each season.

47

:

I want to wonder at and

question what Christ would

48

:

have me learn from each season.

49

:

Especially during the particular season

of my life that I'm in right now.

50

:

I want to find joy in the seasons by

reveling in their unique qualities.

51

:

I want to spend as much time as

possible outside during every season.

52

:

And I want to use the seasons to help

me better cope with and understand

53

:

life and the changes it brings.

54

:

I believe living seasonally as one

way, we can find God in our lives.

55

:

So here I am in the winter season.

56

:

And ironically, Judy bang in the

Southern hemisphere is in the summer.

57

:

She told me this morning that

she was out picking wild zinnias,

58

:

which is so hard for me to believe.

59

:

So if you find yourself in a different

season from me, or if you live in a

60

:

place without much change in the seasons,

61

:

I hope you can transcribe or

modify what I'm talking about.

62

:

For your circumstance.

63

:

For example, I used to live in half moon

bay, California, which is on the coast, a

64

:

40 minute drive south from San Francisco.

65

:

Half moon bay is generally

somewhere between 50 and 70 degrees.

66

:

All year round.

67

:

And in the summer, when everyone

wants to come to the beach,

68

:

it's always foggy and cold.

69

:

In sort the season, there is

dramatically different from where I'm

70

:

living right now in Southeast Utah.

71

:

So when I say seasons, go by

the seasons where you live.

72

:

Even next to the equator where

the daylight hours don't change.

73

:

There are dry and wet seasons.

74

:

Tune into those.

75

:

But right now for me, it's winter.

76

:

And I'm asking myself what

I'm getting from the season.

77

:

And I have to take a deep

breath here because in my

78

:

attempt to embrace the winter.

79

:

I'm giving myself permission to slow

down and not be in a hurry all the time.

80

:

To walk every day, which I love and to

heat dinner earlier and go to bed earlier.

81

:

Both of which I find really hard.

82

:

I'm also trying to outline a schedule

for these podcasts and I'm telling

83

:

myself to create them spiritually first.

84

:

But true to my nature.

85

:

I'm finding myself freaking out.

86

:

I'm thinking things like I

have to get these podcasts up.

87

:

And what am I going to do

and who is going to listen?

88

:

And do I have anything good to say?

89

:

And, and, and.

90

:

You get my point.

91

:

So I'm telling myself to slow down.

92

:

Take a deep breath.

93

:

It's winter focus on what

the season has to share.

94

:

Here are some of my thoughts.

95

:

I'm looking at the season

to understand myself more.

96

:

I believe the outside world is

reflected in my spirit and body.

97

:

So, what do I find?

98

:

I can already feel the days

getting longer energy is expanding.

99

:

This gives me hope.

100

:

My ideas, my thoughts, my dreams

have permission to expand as well.

101

:

The earth in its infinite wisdom

is encouraging me to grow my roots.

102

:

I don't have to grow branches

and leaves right now.

103

:

Just the roots.

104

:

As I look at the seasons, I also see

that they are nuanced and layered.

105

:

One thing that adds depth and

dimension to the seasons is the moon.

106

:

Many ancient cultures have watched,

tracked and named the moons for millennia.

107

:

And these names cross an overlap.

108

:

If you look around on the

internet, sometimes the January

109

:

moon is called the snow moon.

110

:

And in other places, the February moon.

111

:

Is called the snow moon.

112

:

That said, here are some of the

names for the January full moon.

113

:

The Wolf moon.

114

:

The snow moon.

115

:

The storm moon and the old moon.

116

:

All of these names represent

what the people were seeing or

117

:

experiencing at the time of the moon.

118

:

And those, I studied these names.

119

:

I had the thought that I could

name the moons for myself.

120

:

For me.

121

:

For what I see and feel during

that moon what it represents to me.

122

:

So the January full moon I

have named the black bear moon.

123

:

Let me explain why.

124

:

When I was living on the east

side of the Sierra in a little

125

:

mountain town called mammoth lakes.

126

:

I met a super cool man

named Steve Searles.

127

:

Steve became a renowned black bear

expert without any formal training

128

:

or even a high school diploma.

129

:

He was merely a brave and daring observer.

130

:

And one day he explained to me that

on many occasions he has climbed

131

:

into bear dens during the winter.

132

:

Seriously, I'm telling the truth.

133

:

He literally climbed into

dense with bears inside.

134

:

And what he told me is that black

bears don't sleep the whole time.

135

:

They hibernate.

136

:

Often they're in their dens, awake,

calm and relaxed, I suppose, but they

137

:

play with their Cubs and roll around.

138

:

And do bear things.

139

:

So I have named the January

moon, the black bear moon.

140

:

For me, it represents a period

of time that is slow and relaxed.

141

:

Uh, home time.

142

:

Or how about a den time?

143

:

A time of lower energy.

144

:

But I'm not just sleeping stuff is going

on just at a slower pace and more at home.

145

:

Inside or in the planning spiritual phase.

146

:

Just to be clear.

147

:

This isn't the only thing I could

learn from the winter season, but

148

:

it's what I have chosen to focus on.

149

:

For the January moon during

this year and season of my life.

150

:

You will see the difference

here in the February moon.

151

:

The February moon is traditionally

called the snow moon.

152

:

Ice moon store moon or hunger moon.

153

:

Does that last one?

154

:

Get you the hunger moon.

155

:

A lot of people hate winter, but

how much more would you hate it?

156

:

If you do, you were going

to be hungry as well.

157

:

For someone like me, who

has never truly been hungry.

158

:

Despite doing a 10 day fast at one time.

159

:

It's hard to imagine.

160

:

So my choice of moons is

closer to the storm moon.

161

:

Imagine the energy created by a storm.

162

:

This is not the quiet home energy I was

talking about with the black bear moon.

163

:

It's fast, strong and intense.

164

:

It requires you to get up and shovel.

165

:

And while I know storms can back

up and seem to go on for days

166

:

the energy they require, at least

for me seem short and intense.

167

:

I go out and shovel, then go back inside.

168

:

I go out and bring in a bunch of wood.

169

:

Then go back inside.

170

:

It's not the up at 5:00 AM and go until

:

171

:

Even if I get a summer siesta.

172

:

Thus, since I live in the age of

relevant comfort, my choice of names for

173

:

the February moon is the skiers moon.

174

:

I love to ski.

175

:

And I can expend a lot of energy skiing.

176

:

But I'm done and inside by four o'clock.

177

:

It's intense, but short.

178

:

So that's the way I've been

choosing to expend my winter energy.

179

:

When I have things I need to do.

180

:

I take my time.

181

:

Plan them.

182

:

And then in short blocks of

intense energy, I get them done.

183

:

Theoretically, right.

184

:

And our world where modern conveniences.

185

:

Almost negate the seasons.

186

:

It's not always possible

to expend my energy in this

187

:

way, but that's my intention.

188

:

So it's winter.

189

:

I give myself permission to

slow down, to sleep more.

190

:

To spend an hour talking on the

phone with my mom, if I want to.

191

:

To make plans.

192

:

To get my projects done in short bursts.

193

:

To ski as much as possible.

194

:

And tomorrow I will do a big yoga

practice to build up some heat.

195

:

Or maybe the day after that.

196

:

I give myself permission to decide later.

197

:

This world, this earth is sacred to me.

198

:

I believe in tuning into its rhythms.

199

:

It's heartbeat will support me.

200

:

Don't imagine I'm sitting around

my house doing that thing.

201

:

I'm doing things slowly,

deliberately with intention.

202

:

In tune with the season.

203

:

This morning while I sat in meditation, I

stoked a huge glowing Ember in my heart.

204

:

Filling my body with love and warmth.

205

:

And then I imagined myself going

for a walk in the winter season

206

:

with my savior with Jesus.

207

:

We didn't talk.

208

:

We simply walk together.

209

:

In my mind's eye, Jesus was

showing me all that is amazing

210

:

and beautiful about winter.

211

:

I saw fields of pure white untracked snow.

212

:

Rime ice crystals in pine

trees, frozen Brooks.

213

:

Huge snow covered mountains.

214

:

My beloved red rock, desert frosted

with snow like powdered sugar.

215

:

I went underground and imagined a mama

bear in a den with squirmy playful Cubs.

216

:

I imagine being with penguins huddled

together for warmth against biting wind.

217

:

Of course the whole time I was bundled

in warm clothing with my Ember of

218

:

love, warming me from the inside out.

219

:

It was a beautiful journey.

220

:

Which brings me back to the

idea of my mother's little poem.

221

:

Here's my version.

222

:

The woman breathed on cold fingers

as she slowed to contemplate the

223

:

field of freshly fallen snow.

224

:

Which way should she go on this

journey of life left or right.

225

:

As with all such burdensome choices,

she paused to check in with her heart.

226

:

The Ember there was burning low.

227

:

She stoked it with the breath of life.

228

:

A gift from the Elohim.

229

:

The Ember burst into flame.

230

:

Better.

231

:

She thought.

232

:

Now brimming with love and inspiration.

233

:

She examined her two choices once more.

234

:

And chose neither.

235

:

Straight through the middle.

236

:

She proclaimed and off, she went.

237

:

Ghia: That's how winter and its

energy are manifesting for me today.

238

:

Every season has its gifts and challenges.

239

:

My deliberate choice is to embrace

the challenges and share the gifts.

240

:

So please join Judy and me each

week, as we share our thoughts about

241

:

how to navigate this journey, one

small deliberate step at a time.

242

:

If you enjoy this podcast,

please share it with a friend.

243

:

That's the hugest.

244

:

Thank you.

245

:

You could give us.

246

:

And that will enable us to keep going.

247

:

So don't forget to tap into your seasonal

energy and we'll see you next week.

248

:

Until then take loving care of yourself.

249

:

Nama stay.
