Shownotes

In this episode, John and Kelly talk about the concept that success is something you attract, rather than something you chase. By being the type of person that does attract success. As Kelly points out, BE then DO. John makes the analogy of someone trying to catch a butterfly. It’s very elusive. Just like success. But if you become the person that you need to be in order to be successful, you will attract success. Kelly talked about the idea of envisioning the best version of yourself 10 years from now. And envisioning what you would have accomplished. Then seeing the type of person you would need to be in order to attain that level of success. It’s a great analogy. Putting yourself in a third-party position to see the person you need to be in order to attract the success you want is a fundamental concept. In this podcast John also points out the power of the think it be it method. Your defining exactly the person you want to be, exactly what you want to accomplish, and precisely how you can achieve your clearly defined goals. Then you feed that to yourself every day using the think it be it template. Since 95% of a person’s daily thoughts and actions are unconscious, when you feed that to your subconscious mind that’s who you actually become. Your subconscious mind makes you into what you’re feeding it. Powerfully simple. The science of leveraging yourself.

About the Hosts:

John Mitchell

John’s story is pretty amazing. After spending 20 years as an entrepreneur, John was 50 years old but wasn’t as successful as he thought he should be. To rectify that, he decided to find the “top book in the world” on SUCCESS and apply that book literally Word for Word to his life. That Book is Think & Grow Rich. The book says there’s a SECRET for success, but the author only gives you half the secret. John figured out the full secret and a 12 minute a day technique to apply it.

When John applied his 12 minute a day technique to his life, he saw his yearly income go to over $5 million a year, after 20 years of $200k - 300k per year. The 25 times increase happened because John LEVERAGED himself by applying science to his life.

His daily technique works because it focuses you ONLY on what moves the needle, triples your discipline, and consistently generates new business ideas every week. This happens because of 3 key aspects of the leveraging process.

John’s technique was profiled on the cover of Time Magazine. He teaches it at the University of Texas’ McCombs School of Business, which is one the TOP 5 business schools in the country. He is also the “mental coach” for the head athletic coaches at the University of Texas as well.

Kelly Hatfield:

Welcome to Think It Be It the podcast. I'm Kelly Hatfield.

John Mitchell:

Hey. And I'm John Michell. So Kelly, let's talk about the topic of success is something you attract. I know you believe that right?

Kelly Hatfield:

Oh, absolutely. I do. I'm excited to riff on this topic. So let's dive in.

John Mitchell:

You know, I don't know that I would have even grasp what the heck that meant. At. I don't know, in my 20s, or, I probably got it in my 30s. Nothing by I can remember, say it said it to me. But what do you what do you think? When did you? When did you first grasp that idea?

Kelly Hatfield:

The idea of that you have to try to attract excess versus chase it or Yeah, right. Yeah, I think probably. Well, let me back up for a second because I think it where I was first kind of hung up was on what is success? Okay, so like, how does one define success for themselves, because it's different for everybody. And so I think, for me, having clarity around what success is because it's a pretty broad term, you know, what I'm using, and what I thought success was based on, you know, kind of like my environment, the expectations of others, and all of that, versus what success actually meant, to me, took really getting to know myself, you know, and building confidence. And what I thought was success was a version of success, but not the success that I, you know, am attracting or aspire to today. Does that make sense?

John Mitchell:

Absolutely. You know, that that makes a lot of sense to be clear about what is success, before you even try and figure out how to acquire it.

Kelly Hatfield:

Right? And I think to answer your original question, it was probably my late 30s, maybe even early 40s, like before, I had enough experience, positive and negative, you know, where I was able to go, okay, so this version of success isn't fulfilling what I thought was a version of success was chasing my career, making a lot of money. And that's a portion of it. But I left out all of the other areas of my life that were important. And as a result of that, they suffered, because I was, I had my definition of success was all tied to the professional aspect of my life versus the other side of my life. So it probably was, like I said, my late 30s, early 40s, before, I had a clear definition, in my mind of what success was to me, and became to be able to attract that.

John Mitchell:

Yeah, I by that, you know, I always had the idea that, you know, there were two goals, my life to make enough money, so I didn't have to work and, and to find the woman of my dreams. And so that's, that was my definition of success as maybe, and detailed as that. That is, but this idea of, of you attract success rather than chase it I have that vision in my mind that a lot of people think attaining success is something that you catch is like trying to catch a butterfly, you know, you're searching it or you're you're trying to catch it, when in fact, you you want to attract it, like bees to honey, you know, and when I say attracted, I mean, you know, being the person that you need to be to be successful and if if you're talking about in your career, you want to be a person that is hardworking, and is learning from other people, and is diligent and is thoughtful about other people when you're Defining what moves the needle and focusing on that. And you're always learning from other people, you're making that a priority, because you know that you don't have all the answers. And I see that that at least from the business perspective and career perspective, if you create all that in you, then success comes to you. Right?

Kelly Hatfield:

Absolutely. Well, it's the law of resonance, right? Be that which you want to experience in life or to achieve. So it's so it's the, and this is all energy. Right? Right. Yeah, yeah, running as a business owner, if you've created this chaotic environment where you're like, you attract more chaos, it creates, you know, we talk about this all the time, as far as energy, but what you put out is what you get back. Yeah. And so this whole idea of being that which you want to experience in life, you know, again, that law of residence and of the universe kind of falls into place, because you attract, you know, like, so if you're showing up as a present, generous, inspiring, and a bit like, you will begin to attract those people around you, who have the same kind of, you know, energy, and you know what I mean? And so, it's that it's so basic, but that be, do have,

John Mitchell:

yeah, be do have. That's right. Yep. Yeah, yeah, it's, that's true. You know, it's interesting, I may have told you this, I had one of the, in fact, the probably the, the leader on the basketball team for Texas came to me, I met him a couple of weeks ago. And he wants to learn think a bit. And so I'm going to move forward on on Wednesday. And, you know, it's so interesting to take a kid like him, and I don't know, he's probably 22 years old. And, you know, he's successful as an athlete. And you won't believe this. This is unbelievable. I don't I don't think I've ever told you. This. I didn't fully believe it until just the other night. You know, they're paying the University of Texas basketball players $250,000 a year, each one of them. Holy cow. I know. I know. Can you believe that? I mean, that's, that's how bizarre this NIHL has gotten. And, you know, I'm haven't asked him how much he's getting. But I was asking Vic Schaefer, who, you know, who's the women's basketball coach? And I said, Now, Vic, is this really true? Are they actually cutting a check for $250,000? Each player? Yes, that is true. And he said, By the way, that the women are getting only about 25,000. Ah,

Kelly Hatfield:

interesting. Why not surprise me.

John Mitchell:

I knew that would piss you off. But, you know, anyway, you know, the back to this men's basketball player, just an amazing kid. He is just as I was talking to a man after after I met him for the first time, he's taken notes on what I'm saying. I've never seen anybody do that. And so I was totally impressed by but, you know, he wants obviously to be successful. He's an athlete. But, you know, at that, that young age, they don't know how success works. He knows how success on the basketball court works, which is not like how it works in the real world. He's had to put in focus and effort and training and delayed gratification. Well, all as the same stuff that works in the in the real world, right?

Kelly Hatfield:

Yep. Absolutely. And I think, you know, as we're talking to him, we're talking specifically about attracting success. And when we're saying like, be, you know, you need to be that which you want to attract into your life. Really quick. And just giving a tip is one of the really great ways to do this. Because sometimes this is hard to get clarity around. So if you can kind of get out of yourself. There's this really great exercise, and it basically is, maybe the version of you, who is 10 years from now, let's say, you know, and it's the highest version of yourself. And, you know, getting clarity around Okay, well, what does that like and you know, what does that person what is that highest highest version of myself? What are they like, you know, what have they accomplished, you know, how are they showing up in the world? Are they how are they different than I am Um, today, you know, what advice might, that highest version of myself have for me related to success, you know, and so sometimes kind of getting out of your own, you know, pulling yourself out of yourself. Like, it allows you to do that exercise more easily, but gives you some of that clarity that you may need to dig a little bit deeper on that, because it's easy for us to say be that what you want to experience in life or attract in life, but it's another to be like, Okay, well, what does that mean? And that's a really great way that future self, yeah, the, you know, the best future version of yourself coming to talk to you today. And you, you observing, you know, how they are, how they're showing up, what they've accomplished, all of those things, how they're different than you are today begins to give you some of that clarity so that you can begin to be, right, more like that future version of yourself that's done those things that you want to do, or have that life that you want to have. Does that make sense?

John Mitchell:

Absolutely. You know, I guess the value of it, is it it? has you thinking in terms of third party perspective? Yes. You know, as opposed to, in some ways, you can't see the forest for the trees. But if you if you look at your life, and go, Okay, what's the highest form of myself and, and give yourself 10 years to get there. And I guess you're also envisioning all the things you want to accomplish in the next 10 years. Right.

Kelly Hatfield:

Exactly. And to I'm accomplishing to when I'm talking to that version of myself, is their energy like, and she has this knowing piece about her, she trusts herself. She's very, you know, she's at peace with, like, You're thinking too about those things, and might even be how she's dressed, how they, you know, what I mean, when I'm, again, putting it outside myself, the things that she's accomplished in that window of time, and what advice she might have for this version of myself based on where I'm at today, because she's the one that got from where I'm at, to where she is now. So that third party, I know, it's kind of a weird way to But oftentimes, you said it perfectly, that third party getting you out of your own head, and thinking about this isn't a that other version of yourself, really can help with this process?

John Mitchell:

Right? Well, you know, your point of B, well, you know, that flows right into the thinking B methodology, because, and it's interesting, I'm giving a speech, like I was mentioning before we went on today to about 50 entrepreneurs. And, you know, I'm going to tell them, the most significant thing I ever learned was that 95% of my daily actions and thoughts are unconscious. Because, you know, as it relates to how to be, you know, I always had a sort of a vision of a vision of how I wanted to be. But once I understood that 95% of my daily actions are unconscious, then I'm like, Oh, well, you know, for me to be the way I want to be that obviously, I'm going to have to influence those unconscious daily actions. And since the mind, the subconscious mind only responds to repetition, then what that means is I've got to articulate in detail, you know, here's exactly the personal MB, here's exactly what I want to accomplish. And here's precisely how I'm going to achieve my clearly defined goals, once you create that clarity, and then you feed it to yourself, every day, after 21 days. You be that, you know, that's who you pick up. Right? It seemed back

Kelly Hatfield:

lace, I was simple. No. And it's such a great point, too, because, okay, yeah, it's easy to say be knowing everything we know about the subconscious mind and how it runs our life. So if you don't have that, programmed and working for you, you know, rather than that old programming that's working against you, it's practically impossible to be because you're fighting that. So having this, this mechanism, this system to override your subconscious, and that old operating system really is critical. That piece of the puzzle in terms of being able to be

John Mitchell:

Yeah, right. You know, I tell you something that that I think about it, I say this humbly, but I look at the other things that people do to impact mindset as an example, you know, I've just interviewed a couple of the coaches that UT and, you know, they one reads, verses from the Bible. The athletic director does something with the Bible as well. And some of them do meditation. And I hear that and I'm like, Well, that's good. That's better than the vast majority of See what people are doing. But it's not nearly as good as what think it'd be it is I mean, like, how do you argue that, that there's something better than taking the succinct articulation of your life and feeding it to yourself every day, of course, as can impact your actions is going to create the person you want to be. I mean, on a scale of one to 10, that's a 10. Everything else appears to me to be a one or a two. Now, I know I'm clearly biased. But what's your take on that?

Kelly Hatfield:

Well, here's what I think. So I think that think the thing could be a method. And, you know, again, the succinct articulation of your life and reading that every single day, is the main mechanism. So the other things that you mentioned, like reading prayer, meditation, are part of what is integrated into that daily programming. Yeah, as the things that like, so if, if reading Bible verses, or if meditation is something that is aligned with and helps you show up as the best version of yourself, or whatever your life articulation, it's one of the, the levers that you pull, right to make that then it's, it should be incorporated into that visualization. And it's a daily practice that you're doing, as you know, to help you achieve the things that you want to achieve. So I don't even look at them as the as the, in the same as an alternative is an alternative, right? It would I mean, it's, yeah, it's environment. This is the vehicle, you know, the thing could be a method and reading that sustained articulation of your of your life is the vehicle for building all of the habits that you want, that are going to support and get you to where you want to go.

John Mitchell:

Does that make sense? Yeah, yeah,

Kelly Hatfield:

I look at it. So they're not even in the same vein to me,

John Mitchell:

Right? Well, I mean, that's how I look at it. And I respect that, that people are doing something because most people are doing nothing. Like their, their mindset. And, you know, they just, they don't know if the alternative, you know, I mean, you know, I see how, in my past, I would be doing something, and what do I know, I don't know, a better way? Well, when you know, when somebody showed me a better way, then I'm like, oh, what? I wish I'd known that before. But you know, everybody's, at whatever level they're at. So you know, and that's the value of always learning, right?

Kelly Hatfield:

Totally. No, I think of that phrase, like what you do once, you know better than do better. Yeah. And it's that for me, as soon as I, you know, landed on and was was introduced to this technique, it was like, Oh, this is a better feature to everything. Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna do that. Yeah, it's just funny, though, I hope it takes, I think, with anything, and this nothing in particular or with anything, I think it has to come to you, at a time in your life, when you're really ready to receive it. You know, what I mean? Where you're there enough pain, or you're at a pivotal point, or you're where you're ready to receive it. And to because if you're not, again, it goes back to resonance, right? Or congruence. If you're not, if it doesn't align with you, or you're not, then nothing's gonna happen as a result, like, you're not going to keep doing anything. You know,

John Mitchell:

You know that that's a great point, Kelly, because, you know, in the past or be, I'd be with people I'd be, come on, what don't you get? I mean, come on, did it. It's as simple as can be, but you are so right. They've got to be hearing it at the right time. You know, if they're not, you know, they might have all sorts of things going on in their life. And he just doesn't resonate. But you know, you say the exact same thing. You know, a year later, he changes their life. Not unlike when I read, thinking Grow Rich when I was 41. I thought it was a great book. But you know, I see that the difference at 50 Was it at 50, I realized it was the top of the world on success by a factor of 10. That made me go okay, I'm flying this word for word, my life and so, you know, timing is everything.

Kelly Hatfield:

So, absolutely. No, I love that.

John Mitchell:

Okay, well, I hope we've enlightened you today. And so until next time, we'll see you.
