Speaker:

All right, so we're gonna continue going through our sermon series,

Speaker:

which has been titled The Real Jesus.

Speaker:

All right?

Speaker:

And we've been studying out the book of Luke and I made, and we made a

Speaker:

lot of observations about Jesus.

Speaker:

You know, we've seen that Jesus is not religious but righteous,

Speaker:

that Jesus is a world changer and he challenges our worldviews.

Speaker:

Last week we learned about how Jesus has real expectations for

Speaker:

all of us here in this room.

Speaker:

And we also have been having a communal prayer for the church weekly.

Speaker:

Last week we prayed that our church to carry our cross and hold

Speaker:

to Jesus' expectations for us.

Speaker:

And now, uh, this week we're gonna talk about the real Jesus how to be okay.

Speaker:

You guys probably like the real Jesus, how to be Daniel.

Speaker:

Doesn't make sense.

Speaker:

Just be how to be the real Jesus.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Well, guess what?

Speaker:

I'm sorry.

Speaker:

I just graduated college, right?

Speaker:

I'm a criminal justice made.

Speaker:

We need to read that much English class here.

Speaker:

But before I dive in, I just want to ask you all, what do you value?

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

What do you value?

Speaker:

Forgot how to slide there.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

For some of us in this room, we may value our kids.

Speaker:

We may value school.

Speaker:

We may value work.

Speaker:

And assuming that the people who are here in this room today at church, I'm

Speaker:

assuming to an extent we value God.

Speaker:

And now that you've been thinking about your values, we are now

Speaker:

gonna be looking at Jesus' values.

Speaker:

So if you don't mind, let's turn our Bibles to Luke 10 25.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

And we'll be looking over the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Speaker:

And the Good Samaritan is one of the most popular parables out there.

Speaker:

And it doesn't really matter if you are a church goer like yourself

Speaker:

here or someone in the world.

Speaker:

The Good Samaritan is a popular parable.

Speaker:

You know, it's so popular in fact that sociologists refer to this

Speaker:

story to, you know, really spur on uh, one another to motivate people

Speaker:

to do good deeds and help the poor.

Speaker:

And you know, this is my criminal justice side here, but there's even

Speaker:

a law called the Good Samaritan Law.

Speaker:

And with that, the Good Samaritan law is the duty to help a person who's in

Speaker:

danger or in an emergency situation.

Speaker:

Now here in California, that law doesn't apply to us.

Speaker:

So I guess we'll gonna have to help people in need.

Speaker:

No, I'm just kidding, guys.

Speaker:

That's a joke.

Speaker:

Sorry.

Speaker:

Before we go through that, let's go to God in prayer right now.

Speaker:

Uh, father God, just thank you for this morning.

Speaker:

God, just thank you for this time.

Speaker:

We just get to worship you.

Speaker:

God worship you in our singing, worship you communion,

Speaker:

worship you with our offering.

Speaker:

God, uh, God, today, God is pray.

Speaker:

You just, uh, speak through me.

Speaker:

God, remove me, God, and just, uh, speak whatever, uh, you

Speaker:

put on my heart this morning.

Speaker:

God.

Speaker:

God, I really pray that you minister to each and every person

Speaker:

here in this room this morning.

Speaker:

You believe so much and Jesus name, amen.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

All right, so I'm gonna read verse 10 through 25, or chapter 10, 25 to

Speaker:

28 says, on one occasion, an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.

Speaker:

Teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

Speaker:

What is written in the law?

Speaker:

Jesus replied, how do you read it?

Speaker:

He answered, love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and

Speaker:

with all your strength, and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.

Speaker:

You have answered correctly.

Speaker:

Jesus, uh, replied, do this and you will live.

Speaker:

So we see that a lot has happened here just in these three or

Speaker:

four verses we just read.

Speaker:

We have a expert in the law and Jesus, and we hear expert in the law.

Speaker:

I don't want you guys to think about a lawyer, all right?

Speaker:

Don't think about a lawyer who's gonna defend a good Samaritan law.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Think about someone who studies out the Bible, who knows the

Speaker:

Bible, who knows the truth.

Speaker:

And what says here that on one occasion the expert law stood up to test Jesus.

Speaker:

Now it's interesting.

Speaker:

Why would he stand up to test Jesus?

Speaker:

And not only that, he stand up to test Jesus.

Speaker:

He asked him, how do I inherit eternal life?

Speaker:

Now it's, I find it very interesting that the expert asked us, because

Speaker:

by this question, being an expert, I feel like you know the Bible already.

Speaker:

So why are you asking Jesus?

Speaker:

How do you inherit eternal life?

Speaker:

You already know that.

Speaker:

I feel like the expert here probably isn't even interested in learning something new.

Speaker:

He just wants to hear what Jesus has to say.

Speaker:

See if it aligns with his own belief here.

Speaker:

And we see here that Jesus responded to the question with the question.

Speaker:

Pretty much He tells the man, Hey, what is written the law?

Speaker:

How do you read it?

Speaker:

And then, of course, the ex fed love the Lord you God with without

Speaker:

your heart and with all your soul, with all your mind and strength.

Speaker:

And he says, love your neighbor as yourself.

Speaker:

Now I know.

Speaker:

Oh, sorry.

Speaker:

So today, sorry.

Speaker:

We'll, we'll get two separate points that highlight the greatest commandment.

Speaker:

These two greatest commandment.

Speaker:

Love the Lord of God and love your neighbor.

Speaker:

All right, so we're gonna continue reading, but first,

Speaker:

I know it's kind of confusing.

Speaker:

I know he says, love your neighbor yourself and do this.

Speaker:

The expert asks pretty much, Hey, who is my neighbor?

Speaker:

It's a great question.

Speaker:

We'll continue reading here in verse three, how Jesus

Speaker:

responds to that question.

Speaker:

It says here in reply, Jesus said, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho.

Speaker:

When he was attacked by robbers, they stripped him of his clothes, beat him,

Speaker:

and went away, leaving him half dead.

Speaker:

A priest happened to be going down the same road.

Speaker:

And when he saw the man he passed by on the other side.

Speaker:

So to a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, uh,

Speaker:

pass by on the other side.

Speaker:

But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was.

Speaker:

And when he saw him, he took pity on him.

Speaker:

He went to him and banded his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.

Speaker:

Then he put the man in his own donkey, brought him to

Speaker:

an inn and took care of him.

Speaker:

The next day, he took out two dery and gave them to the inkeeper.

Speaker:

Look after them, he said, and when I return, I will reimburse you

Speaker:

for an extra expense you may have.

Speaker:

Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell

Speaker:

into the hands of the robbers?

Speaker:

The expert in the law replied, the one who had mercy on him.

Speaker:

Jesus told him, go and do like wise.

Speaker:

Now, before, uh, you know, we answered the question, who is our neighbor?

Speaker:

I wanna give you some context here.

Speaker:

So Jesus speaking to the expert, he's speaking to a Jew and a

Speaker:

Jew, were God's chosen people.

Speaker:

And Jews believed during that time that their neighbors were other Jews.

Speaker:

All right?

Speaker:

So that gave them an excuse not to love The Samaritans, loved the

Speaker:

Gentiles, to love any of them.

Speaker:

They only want to love themselves.

Speaker:

And I was preparing this lesson, I was kind of like, oh, of course

Speaker:

God's people messing up again.

Speaker:

Alwa as always, nothing new.

Speaker:

But then I realized for myself, I was like, oh, wait, Daniel, you

Speaker:

may have the same heart as well.

Speaker:

Maybe when you think of love your neighbor, Daniel, that just

Speaker:

means loving God's people means loving people in this room.

Speaker:

Okay, that's a scary thought church.

Speaker:

But Jesus began to speak on this issue and began to tell this story after

Speaker:

the man asked him, who is my neighbor?

Speaker:

And of course, Jesus tells the story of a, of a man who was walking,

Speaker:

Jewish man was walking down the road from Jericho to Jerusalem, and

Speaker:

yet he was robbed and beaten and left half to, uh, half to death.

Speaker:

And before I break it down, I just wanna sh uh, I don't have the slide

Speaker:

anymore, but I just want you to just imagine what this road looked like.

Speaker:

I looked it up online.

Speaker:

I saw a video of it.

Speaker:

The road is literally like a hiking trail, guys.

Speaker:

And with hiking trails, you know, you can't really fit two cars on the road.

Speaker:

So it's not a road where it's like, you know, there's a crosswalking walk.

Speaker:

It's not a big road, it's a hiking trail, which means that, pretty much

Speaker:

that whenever the priest and the Levi saw this half dead man on the street,

Speaker:

pretty much he saw, uh, they had a close interaction with this man, which

Speaker:

means that, you know, they're probably this fur, uh, this much away from

Speaker:

the man from me to this table here.

Speaker:

So as they pass on the other side of the, the road, as the scripture said,

Speaker:

really, they had to look down on him.

Speaker:

My side.

Speaker:

There it is.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

But then it says here that a Samaritan took pity on him.

Speaker:

Okay, well the Jews don't love Samaritans, so why would the Samaritans love this

Speaker:

Jew who's left for dead on the road?

Speaker:

I don't know why.

Speaker:

Hmm.

Speaker:

I mean, you see the priests and the Levi who are also a part of the Jewish

Speaker:

culture, you saw that didn't even lift up one finger to help this man.

Speaker:

On the road.

Speaker:

And I have two points today.

Speaker:

And the first I wanna bring up is Jesus wants us to be compassionate.

Speaker:

You know, why does he want us to be compassionate?

Speaker:

Because compassion is a product of our love.

Speaker:

And if we don't have love, we don't have compassion.

Speaker:

And compassion is not just a feeling or an idea, it requires action.

Speaker:

You know what good is it?

Speaker:

If the Samaritan saw this dead man and was like, oh, hey man, I'm so sorry.

Speaker:

You look really beat up, man.

Speaker:

Ah, best of luck to you.

Speaker:

Does that really help?

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

I mean, I'm pretty sure the Levite and the priest had compassion.

Speaker:

I'm pretty sure they something.

Speaker:

Oh man, I'm sorry.

Speaker:

But the Samaritan not only had compassion, but he backed it up with action, you know?

Speaker:

Um, sorry.

Speaker:

And I asked you guys this, how do you like real compassion?

Speaker:

I think I, I'm saying real compassion.

Speaker:

I'm saying real compassion in a sense of being backed up by your actions.

Speaker:

And I feel like, hey, come, I can fall short in so many areas of this, you

Speaker:

know, is it in your family towards your coworkers, strangers on the street.

Speaker:

But I think a more important question to ask this morning

Speaker:

is why we lack real compassion.

Speaker:

Is it our arrogance?

Speaker:

Is it our pride, our selfishness?

Speaker:

Maybe we're too busy, maybe we have a lack of love, lack of spirituality.

Speaker:

And if I'm being honest here, church, I know I have no compassion at times.

Speaker:

I lack it.

Speaker:

And it's evident in how I love and forgive very little.

Speaker:

I feel like it's evident in my household.

Speaker:

You can ask my roommate at time, keep evident in my relationship.

Speaker:

You can ask my girlfriend.

Speaker:

It's evident in my workplace and my friendship and effort, so many

Speaker:

people around me as a result of it.

Speaker:

But church, I am also realizing that real compassion is not just

Speaker:

meeting people's needs, physical needs, which I believe church,

Speaker:

we've been doing a great job at it.

Speaker:

I believe in, uh, meeting each other's physical needs.

Speaker:

There's so many people here in this church that are mourning over so many

Speaker:

losses and to see all of us rallying up to really be there for the family,

Speaker:

for the individuals, I think we've been doing great as a, as a church.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

However, real compassion means that we also meet the spiritual needs as well.

Speaker:

It means that we're willing to speak the truth and love and call one another higher

Speaker:

so that we can, uh, imitate Christ better.

Speaker:

If I can be honest, your church, I feel like we can lack

Speaker:

compassion towards each other.

Speaker:

You know, as a young man who wants to be zealous for God, I feel that

Speaker:

US Church right now, we are afraid to speak the truth to in love to

Speaker:

each other for reasons I am not sure.

Speaker:

Maybe cuz we're afraid of confrontation.

Speaker:

Maybe cuz we're afraid that we're gonna offend someone.

Speaker:

Maybe because I don't know, like it'll put a strain on a

Speaker:

relationship we feel comfortable in.

Speaker:

Or if you're like myself, it may hurt your pride.

Speaker:

It'll force you to be humble when others call you higher to the standard of God.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

Real compassion means caring for each other's souls and eternity.

Speaker:

And like the man here, uh, who asked the expert, who asked Jesus.

Speaker:

Now how do you inherit eternal life?

Speaker:

I want that too.

Speaker:

All of us in this room wanna inherit eternal life and we

Speaker:

will not inherit eternal life.

Speaker:

And we are just gonna be surrounded by people who just kind of tell us, you

Speaker:

know, oh yeah, you know, it's okay.

Speaker:

Pray about it, type of thing.

Speaker:

No, I want us to call each other higher church.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

And I believe we can grow in this way if we imitate Christ's example

Speaker:

of loving our neighbor as ourselves.

Speaker:

And we've seen here so far throughout the Book of Luke that Jesus has not

Speaker:

been falling short of this standard of loving your neighbor as yourself.

Speaker:

I mean, we see him love the Pharisees.

Speaker:

We see him love his own disciples.

Speaker:

And I think one lesson that Marcel did, loving the women during this

Speaker:

time, you know, Jesus expect us to be compassionate towards our neighbors now.

Speaker:

No, I'm saying a lot.

Speaker:

And you don't just wake up one morning, obviously, to be like, I'm gonna

Speaker:

be compassionate to everyone else.

Speaker:

No, it takes time.

Speaker:

But you can become compassionate if you are with Jesus being with Jesus here.

Speaker:

And I think to close out here, I want to read a scripture

Speaker:

from uh, Luke 10 38 through 42.

Speaker:

And it's about Mary and Martha.

Speaker:

And this story guys really is so impactful for me personally.

Speaker:

It says here, as Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he

Speaker:

came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.

Speaker:

She had a sister called Mary who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said.

Speaker:

But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.

Speaker:

She came to him and asked, Lord, don't you even care that my sister

Speaker:

has left me to do the work by myself?

Speaker:

Tell her to help me.

Speaker:

Martha.

Speaker:

Martha, the Lord answered.

Speaker:

You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed.

Speaker:

Or indeed, only one Mary has chosen what is better and it

Speaker:

will not be taken away from her.

Speaker:

So we see here that Jesus was at the Lord's feet and reading this and going

Speaker:

through Luke, I don't know, something, uh, another thought in my mind that

Speaker:

happened is like, wow, like they're really worshiping the Lord's feet.

Speaker:

And I think about it for me today.

Speaker:

I'm like, wow, if I did that to Jesus, like Jesus is not wearing shoes or socks.

Speaker:

This man's walking around barefoot and dirt and everything.

Speaker:

Yet they're worshiping me at his feet.

Speaker:

As we saw the lesson, uh, left previous back, we talked seeing

Speaker:

how the woman was crying on his feet and cleaning with her hair.

Speaker:

Now here we have Mary Jesus and Mary and Martha's House, who are Mary's

Speaker:

worshiping the Lord at his feet.

Speaker:

Mary knew what was important here.

Speaker:

She knew that Jesus was important.

Speaker:

He was in the presence.

Speaker:

She was in the presence of Jesus.

Speaker:

But Jesus had to remind Martha that few things are needed or indeed only one.

Speaker:

And how often do you think we can imitate Martha?

Speaker:

Well, we get distracted by so many other things in this life right now.

Speaker:

Have a few slides.

Speaker:

I'd like to show you some things we are distracted by.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

This is gonna attack some of the young professionals in

Speaker:

campus ministry, , social media.

Speaker:

Oh my goodness.

Speaker:

I don't have social media, but I heard this statistic.

Speaker:

Someone told us during a retreat that, uh, my generation, I don't

Speaker:

know what generation I am, but we spent over 40 hours a week on social

Speaker:

media, just on our phone scrolling.

Speaker:

So next time you see us stressed out, it's because we're in school and we also have

Speaker:

a full-time job being on social media.

Speaker:

Apparently.

Speaker:

another one.

Speaker:

Oh, this is big for me and some of the guys here.

Speaker:

What about sports?

Speaker:

Oh man.

Speaker:

Here are a few of the, the, yeah.

Speaker:

Michael joining the Wizards.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You see where, uh, I, I see 'em standing in the goat conversation.

Speaker:

But look, we see here sports is a big issue.

Speaker:

I feel like it's a big distraction.

Speaker:

If you don't believe me, you can ask any soccer player here in this

Speaker:

room or a soccer fan, what they're doing in December, being up at 5:00

Speaker:

AM what they been with the Lord.

Speaker:

Hey, possibly.

Speaker:

But more likely they're watching the World Cup to be honest with you guys.

Speaker:

what about this?

Speaker:

Oh, what about we ha we have this to-do lists.

Speaker:

Maybe we are waking up early and we're like, Hey, we're

Speaker:

gonna spend time with God.

Speaker:

We're gonna read our Bible, we're gonna pray.

Speaker:

But then as you're doing that, you're like, oh wait, did I send that work email?

Speaker:

Ooh, how's my kid doing right now?

Speaker:

Oh, did I finish that assignment?

Speaker:

Mm.

Speaker:

We get distracted by other things.

Speaker:

And you know, I feel like we live in a society that is hurried,

Speaker:

and I read this book last year.

Speaker:

It's called The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, and it's by Pastor John Comer.

Speaker:

And he talks about how being busy destroyed his mental health and

Speaker:

affected his relationship and weakened his connection to his faith.

Speaker:

But he said, by slowing down and limiting his commitments, he gained happiness

Speaker:

and wellbeing in every area of his life.

Speaker:

Now I wanna talk about the slowing down and living.

Speaker:

His commitment when he slowed down and limit his commitment, he didn't

Speaker:

say, oh, I'm gonna draw back from God.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

He said, I'm gonna run towards God because all these other things in

Speaker:

my life aren't as important because I love the Lord my God, with all

Speaker:

my heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Speaker:

And I'm gonna live that out cuz that is a commandment that Jesus had for me.

Speaker:

And when reading the book, I started to make connections for myself and

Speaker:

my generation and my generation.

Speaker:

They struggled to pay attention for more than 10 seconds.

Speaker:

You know what that means?

Speaker:

I'm talking to you, campus young professionals.

Speaker:

That means that when I got up here and said, hi, my name is Daniel.

Speaker:

You guys tuned out right after that,

Speaker:

Just kidding.

Speaker:

Love you.

Speaker:

Campus . We guys think about, Martha was no different.

Speaker:

She was so worried and consumed with distractions that she didn't even

Speaker:

take time to be with God in the flesh.

Speaker:

We can be the same way.

Speaker:

Jesus reminded her that the most important thing is to be with him.

Speaker:

Do you church have the value?

Speaker:

That being with Jesus is number one for us to even have compassion,

Speaker:

gift to others and build God.

Speaker:

Church must be connected to the Son.

Speaker:

And I love how this story of Mary Martha comes after the Good Samaritan.

Speaker:

Cause we see her at the Good Samaritan.

Speaker:

It showed how important it was to give to our neighbors, to

Speaker:

give to those who are in need.

Speaker:

But this story, Martha and Mary, it shows two things to me.

Speaker:

First one, it shows that Jesus was compassionate to Martha, that he

Speaker:

wasn't upset that she was doing.

Speaker:

Other things.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

But I think that, uh, you know, Jesus calling, responding to her.

Speaker:

I mean, think about it.

Speaker:

I think I have the slide.

Speaker:

I have the slide.

Speaker:

Cool.

Speaker:

I have the slide here.

Speaker:

Uh, where is it?

Speaker:

Oh, you literally have Martha pretty much screaming at the

Speaker:

Lord, like, tell her to help me.

Speaker:

I saw the exclamation point.

Speaker:

I was like, dang, she's really screaming at Jesus right now in the presence of him.

Speaker:

But guess what?

Speaker:

Jesus calm responded, being compassionate, validating her while also, you

Speaker:

know, lifting her up in the process.

Speaker:

And I think for me, I want that response from you.

Speaker:

Church.

Speaker:

I want you guys to lift me higher to make me recognize that wow,

Speaker:

like what you're going through is, you know, nothing comparison to

Speaker:

being the presence of the Lord.

Speaker:

And a little side note here.

Speaker:

You know, I think that, you know, with Kyle and Jasmine, uh, our campus

Speaker:

ministers here, they've been great and I feel like they've been calling me

Speaker:

higher in so many areas of my life.

Speaker:

Quick story here.

Speaker:

This past summer we had a, our roommate Justice move in and uh, where's Ja?

Speaker:

He's up there doing av, but uh, yeah, so Justice was moving in and

Speaker:

obviously our house would, at first we were like, being clean roll,

Speaker:

you know, we're clean, we're great.

Speaker:

And then we started lacking towards the summer when Justin started moving in.

Speaker:

I remember Kyle, Jasmine, a few other sisters, they came into our household

Speaker:

and they were like, this is a mess.

Speaker:

This is filthy.

Speaker:

You know, get this outta here.

Speaker:

I'm like, start cleaning.

Speaker:

And I remember like, man, like, who are you guys at?

Speaker:

Like, I woke in like, my home.

Speaker:

Are you gonna start questioning like my apartment right now?

Speaker:

I was getting mad, but then at the same time, I realized afterwards

Speaker:

I was like, you know what?

Speaker:

They're right.

Speaker:

So we start cleaning and stuff like that.

Speaker:

And, you know, justice moved in.

Speaker:

It was great.

Speaker:

Obviously we didn't do a good job because his mom had a call made to

Speaker:

clean his part of the room, so we didn't do that much of a great job.

Speaker:

But guys, I want us church to, you know, be like that.

Speaker:

I mean, I know that was like a small little, but I want us to call

Speaker:

each other out when we're in sin.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

And lastly, just how, as important it's to give just like the Good Samaritan

Speaker:

giving to this man who was dead on the road, you know, left for dead.

Speaker:

It's important for the give.

Speaker:

It's also important that we receive as well.

Speaker:

You know, we give out love, we give an encouragement, but I feel like we need

Speaker:

to receive and love the encouragement, but most of all receive Jesus.

Speaker:

Now, I'd like to close out here with the few action steps, action

Speaker:

steps, and prayer for the week.

Speaker:

All right, the first action step.

Speaker:

I want us to take time to view scriptures about Jesus' life.

Speaker:

And I know, you know, we've been going through it here on Sunday service by, you

Speaker:

know, I hope we've been doing this, uh, throughout our own times with God as well.

Speaker:

And lastly, church.

Speaker:

I want us to pray daily for the church to become more compassionate.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

Love you church.
