Ghia – exploring gratitude with the cycles of the moon

Transcripts

Speaker:

Hurray.

2

:

Ghia here.

3

:

I'm this week's host of the

creative, spiritual journey podcast.

4

:

We're duty.

5

:

And I talk about those

things that bring us joy.

6

:

For me.

7

:

I find joy by connecting with nature.

8

:

Connecting with Jesus Christ and our

heavenly parents seasonal living.

9

:

And all the bits of magic and wonder

I come across while navigating this

10

:

remarkable journey we call life.

11

:

Today.

12

:

I want to start off talking about

cycles and the power of repetition.

13

:

I believe this earth was

designed specifically for us.

14

:

Everything about it is for our highest

good and to enhance our ability to

15

:

return home to our heavenly parents.

16

:

I don't think it's a coincidence that we

have the cycle created by the sun rising

17

:

in the morning and setting in the evening.

18

:

Think about a day for a moment.

19

:

It's repetition.

20

:

I can count on.

21

:

Every day I get to start over.

22

:

If I forgot to read my

scriptures yesterday.

23

:

I get to remember and try again today.

24

:

It's a fresh beginning.

25

:

And while some days can

seem long, they always end.

26

:

And I can count on that as well.

27

:

I like to think about

what this teaches me.

28

:

And what about the weeks?

29

:

Every seven days we have another Sabbath.

30

:

And what do I do on the Sabbath?

31

:

I rest, I go to church.

32

:

I take the sacrament.

33

:

And I hear the same sacramental

prayers repeated every time.

34

:

Wouldn't once be enough.

35

:

I asked myself why the repetition.

36

:

What do I learn from hearing

the same words every week?

37

:

And the temple.

38

:

I don't go the same day of the week

or even the same day of the month.

39

:

But every time I go, I hear

the same words again and again.

40

:

And I wonder why.

41

:

Another example of repetition

is the seasons created by the

42

:

sun and the tilt of the earth.

43

:

The seasons encompass the days

and the weeks and give us an

44

:

even larger pattern or cycle.

45

:

Other than the magic inherent in

the seasons, there was something

46

:

about them that I find very unique.

47

:

Something that I'm not sure

we often consider And that is.

48

:

the repetition of the holidays.

49

:

I don't think the

holidays are an accident.

50

:

I don't know if they are specifically

ordained of God, but they are

51

:

certainly part of the human condition

and have been for a very long time.

52

:

If not from the beginning of time.

53

:

I believe we innately

long for the repetition.

54

:

And what is the purpose of all

these different forms of repetition?

55

:

All these cycles.

56

:

I believe they are to help us to remember.

57

:

To remember Jesus Christ to remember

our freedoms, to remember our

58

:

abundance, our families, our loved ones.

59

:

Every year.

60

:

We remember them all over again.

61

:

And we need to consistently be reminded

of who we are, why we're here, what

62

:

this earth life is about, who God

is and what he has done for us.

63

:

The daily, weekly and yearly

cycles help us to remember.

64

:

I love this.

65

:

I love the cycles.

66

:

I feel like this gives me a

rhythm akin to my heartbeat.

67

:

I think this grounds me to the

earth and helps me to move forward.

68

:

But there is another cycle

that often gets overlooked and

69

:

that is the cycle of the moon.

70

:

And the moon cycle is the

topic for this podcast.

71

:

This cycle is subtle and easy to ignore.

72

:

And I have to wonder if paying

attention to it will even make

73

:

any difference in my life.

74

:

Maybe not.

75

:

But what if I could add depth and

a unique perspective to my life?

76

:

Would that be worth exploring?

77

:

I think so.

78

:

There is a theory that the son

has masculine energy and that

79

:

the moon has feminine energy.

80

:

People go on to say that because we

live in a masculine dominated world,

81

:

women can reclaim their feminine

energy by tuning into the moon cycles.

82

:

Is this true?

83

:

I have no idea.

84

:

But I like the concept because I find

joy connecting with the natural world.

85

:

The truth is I have always been a

little baffled at how to connect

86

:

with the moon cycles without

being affected by the sun cycles.

87

:

Here's my conclusion.

88

:

We can't nor would we want to

I've come to believe that we have

89

:

been given both cycles by design.

90

:

I don't want to cut out

one in favor of the other.

91

:

I am female, but I have

masculine and feminine energy.

92

:

We all do men and women

have both these energies.

93

:

Rather than discount the sun energy.

94

:

My goal is to layer the

moon energy over it.

95

:

So here is the day and the year cycle

of the sun mashed together into one.

96

:

The morning is spring.

97

:

Noon is summer evening is fall.

98

:

And midnight is winter.

99

:

The sun.

100

:

I understand mostly right.

101

:

The good news is the moon

has basically the same cycle.

102

:

Let's start with the new moon.

103

:

technically the moon is

only new for a short moment.

104

:

That moment when the sun and the moon.

105

:

are perfectly aligned in the sky.

106

:

But generally we can count on the

new moon energy lasting for three

107

:

days the day before, the day of,

and the day after the new moon.

108

:

This is said to be a

time for new beginnings.

109

:

A time of introspection, a time to

journal at time for self care, Uh,

110

:

time for organizing our personal space.

111

:

I love all these things.

112

:

And if the moon gives me permission to do

them, I am certainly not going to argue.

113

:

Count me in.

114

:

But that is only a small part

of working with the moon cycle.

115

:

There was also the idea that

while the moon is waxing, Slowly

116

:

providing more and more illumination.

117

:

We can use that energy in our daily lives.

118

:

I like to imagine it

like growing a flower.

119

:

On the new moon, you set your

intention, you get the soil

120

:

ready and you plant the seed.

121

:

This is a period of

rebirth and new beginnings.

122

:

If we were looking at an analog clock,

this would be at the top 12 o'clock.

123

:

During the waxing Crescent, we

moved to the right on our clock.

124

:

Your seed sprouts and sends out roots.

125

:

Your intentions begin to grow.

126

:

At the half moon three o'clock your

sprout is pushing its head above

127

:

the soil and has a good root system.

128

:

It's growing faster.

129

:

Now this is a time for action

decision and commitment.

130

:

At the waxing, gibbous about four 30.

131

:

The seed has grown Ubud

and is beginning to open.

132

:

This is a time for patients.

133

:

Persistence and enhancement.

134

:

Then when we reached the full

moon at six o'clock, our flour is

135

:

fully formed, completely open and

sharing its beauty with the world.

136

:

So that is the first

half of the moon cycle.

137

:

Now, how do we use this

in our everyday lives?

138

:

Let me explain my understanding.

139

:

I imagine you've been asked

to give a talk in church.

140

:

Don't panic.

141

:

This is just an example.

142

:

The new moon.

143

:

would be the first step.

144

:

Where you pick your topic,

start thinking of ideas.

145

:

The waxing Crescent would be

beginning to gather information.

146

:

Reading talks and finding quotes.

147

:

We learn a bunch don't we,

this is like growing roots.

148

:

At the waxing half-moon our

notes are beginning to pile up.

149

:

It's time to make decisions.

150

:

We pick the best quotes.

151

:

We do the work of writing our talk.

152

:

Then at the waxing gibbous

if we haven't procrastinated.

153

:

We have a time to Polish our talk

and to practice our presentation.

154

:

Next is the full moon.

155

:

This is when we present

what we have created.

156

:

This is the summer when we

have fully bloomed and are

157

:

shining our light to the world.

158

:

So that's my representation of

the first half of the moon cycle.

159

:

Now.

160

:

I don't know about you.

161

:

But I don't think I have

ever been assigned a talk

162

:

that coincided with the moon.

163

:

And if I tried to schedule my

life around the moon, I don't

164

:

think I would get anything done.

165

:

This is where I get baffled about how to

apply the moon energy idea to my life.

166

:

This led me to ponder what I could do.

167

:

For me.

168

:

I have decided to play with the idea

of giving myself personal assignments

169

:

that can coincide with the moon.

170

:

These would be when it's convenient

and when it seems like it would work.

171

:

These will just be an experiment.

172

:

Can I notice any difference

and working with the moon

173

:

energy instead of ignoring it?

174

:

I'm doing this because I believe

in cycles, I believe in repetition

175

:

and I believe in moon energy, the

so-called feminine energy must have

176

:

a purpose, even if only subtle.

177

:

If possible, I want to learn from it.

178

:

So here I go.

179

:

Let me share with you my current

self assigned moon cycle project.

180

:

Because it's November the

month of Thanksgiving, this

181

:

great holiday of the harvest.

182

:

I have given myself the

task of exploring gratitude.

183

:

What happens?

184

:

What sprouts, what grows.

185

:

I won't know for two weeks

until my next podcast comes out.

186

:

This is just what I'm doing.

187

:

If you are interested in exploring

moon energy with me, you can

188

:

do it with anything you want.

189

:

From how you do the laundry to

how you read your scriptures.

190

:

It's your choice.

191

:

For me, it's going to be gratitude.

192

:

And because we are right here

at the new moon, let me set some

193

:

intentions, plant some seeds of this

new beginning by sharing with you.

194

:

Some of my current

thoughts about gratitude.

195

:

A few years ago, my fabulous

man, and I spent some time

196

:

exploring Sequoia national park.

197

:

The morning of our departure, we set a

prayer for safe travels and we headed

198

:

down the mountains on our long drive home.

199

:

Partway down a minivan turned right

in front of us and we T-boned.

200

:

Knocking the van on its side and

pancaking the front of my truck.

201

:

The airbags went off, there was smoke.

202

:

I couldn't get the door open.

203

:

It was terrifying.

204

:

Miraculously all parties

involved were safe.

205

:

We were battered and bruised But

honestly, I was just grateful to be alive.

206

:

It was that bad of an accident.

207

:

At this point, there was nothing

I could do, but wait for the

208

:

police and the tow truck.

209

:

Because of how remote we were.

210

:

It was a long wait.

211

:

And the longer I waited, the more

I found myself getting angry.

212

:

I began to suspect the driver of the

minivan had been on his cell phone.

213

:

Why else would he do something so dumb?

214

:

And this dummy had just totaled my

truck and yes, insurance would cover it.

215

:

But they never give quite enough.

216

:

And then there was the trouble

of finding a new vehicle.

217

:

And how are we going to get home?

218

:

We were miles away without a car.

219

:

All these thoughts were

stomping through my mind.

220

:

Then I recalled a few weeks earlier when

an energy therapist had suggested I might

221

:

be suffering from feelings of resentment.

222

:

At the time I was surprised.

223

:

I didn't think I was resentful.

224

:

But the more I thought about it,

the more I identified a little

225

:

resentments things like technology.

226

:

Technology makes me crazy.

227

:

You just get it figured

out and it changes.

228

:

And when I get stuck, I feel so helpless.

229

:

I had to admit that

technology made me resentful.

230

:

So I set out on a path of

ridding myself of resentment.

231

:

And how exactly do you do that?

232

:

I decided gratitude was the best antidote.

233

:

And that when resentment came along,

I would smother it with gratitude.

234

:

Which brings me back to the accident.

235

:

There I was sitting at the side

of the road and I could feel the

236

:

resentment building inside of me for

this dumb kid who had Ruined my life.

237

:

Right.

238

:

But because I was prepared.

239

:

Because I had a plan.

240

:

I dug in my purse and found a pen

and an old envelope, and I began to

241

:

write down anything and everything.

242

:

I was grateful for.

243

:

It turned out to be one of the

greatest experiences of my life.

244

:

Those, I don't know, 10 to 15 minutes of

gratitude made the whole accident easier.

245

:

So my self assigned task for

the first half of the November.

246

:

Lunation.

247

:

Do you like that word?

248

:

Lew nation?

249

:

I just learned it.

250

:

It refers to the days of the lunar cycle.

251

:

So my first task for the November

lunation is to explore gratitude.

252

:

I want to ponder gratitude with all my

senses, how it feels smells and even

253

:

tastes and how it looks and sounds.

254

:

I plan to do this while tuning into

the waxing energy of the moon, this

255

:

time of growing light and illumination.

256

:

I plan to gather ideas and insights,

whatever comes into my life.

257

:

I want to pay attention to new people, new

books, new podcasts, new opportunities.

258

:

I want to see if I can tap

into the building momentum of

259

:

light and explore what I find.

260

:

I want to examine what I learn and

assess how gratitude makes me feel.

261

:

And by the waxing gibbous I hope

to have my thoughts in a forum.

262

:

I can share with you on the full moon.

263

:

That's my plan.

264

:

If you're interested, perhaps you

will join me for this experiment.

265

:

Either way I will let you know what

I've learned in my next podcast.

266

:

No pressure.

267

:

Right.

268

:

then in that same podcast, I will talk

about the second half of the moon cycle.

269

:

So here we go.

270

:

Let's see what happens.

271

:

Judy, and I know your time is precious

and that you have many choices.

272

:

We love that you have chosen to

walk with us for a few minutes.

273

:

As we talk about the lessons

we've been learning while we

274

:

navigate this journey of life.

275

:

If you liked this podcast.

276

:

Thank you so much for

sharing it with a friend.

277

:

And consider If you shoot for

the moon, even if you miss it,

278

:

you will land among the stars.

279

:

Nama stay.
