What Exactly Is Mineral Paint?
If a jar says mineral paint, you would think that tells you what kind of paint is inside. But as I discovered, the word mineral can mean very different things depending on the product—and understanding those differences can help you make better decisions for your furniture projects.
In this episode of The Furniture Artist’s Resource Guide, we’re looking beyond the front of the paint jar. I’ll share my experience trying Fusion Mineral Paint for the first time, why one little $20 jar taught me more than I expected, and how it eventually became part of a much bigger lesson about paint, marketing, learning from experience, and even selling furniture.
We’ll also talk about why prep still matters, why a built-in topcoat doesn’t necessarily answer every finishing question, and why you shouldn’t assume a piece will sell quickly just because you painted it a popular neutral color. Sometimes the problem isn’t the furniture at all—it simply hasn’t gotten in front of the right buyer yet.
Along the way, I’ll tell you what my greenhouse jungle taught me about learning furniture flipping one piece of information at a time. Because whether we’re talking about fertilizer or furniture paint, a little information can be useful—but incomplete.
The goal isn’t to memorize every ingredient in every can of paint. It’s to learn enough to look beyond the marketing, understand what a product actually does, and choose what makes sense for your project.
Because confidence doesn’t come from knowing everything.
It comes from learning, trying, paying attention, and realizing that the next time you encounter a problem, you probably know more than you think you do.
