U.S. employers added just 22,000 jobs last month. The Labor Department said on Friday that hiring decelerated from 79,000 in July. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.3 percent, which was also worse than expected and the highest level since 2021. The Labor Department reported on Thursday that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits—a proxy for layoffs—rose last week to the highest level since June.

In a Truth Social post, President Donald Trump said the United States may have lost India and Russia to China. He made the statement after Russian President Vladimir Putin and India's Narendra Modi met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping this week as Beijing pushes a new world order.
