:

This is The Dwelling Place from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox, and I hope you

had a wonderful Mother's Day yesterday.

3

:

We absolutely believe that the Lord sees

all you do and that He is glorified by it.

4

:

Today, we're reading 2 Samuel

chapter 10, 1 Chronicles 19,

5

:

and Psalms 20, 65, and 66.

6

:

We'll ask how we balance the scriptures

that we believe the best about others

7

:

with the fact that we're called to be as

wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

8

:

2 Samuel chapter 10 and 1 Chronicles

19 tell the same story, and we'll read

9

:

from the account in 1 Chronicles 19.

10

:

" Now, after this, Nahash, The

king of the Ammonites died, and

11

:

his son reigned in his place.

12

:

And David said, ' I will deal kindly

with Hanun, the son of Nahash, for

13

:

his father dealt kindly with me.'

14

:

So David sent messengers to

console him concerning his father.

15

:

And David's servants came to the land of

the Ammonites to Hanun to console him.

16

:

But the princes of the Ammonites said

to Hanun, ' Do you think because

17

:

David has sent comforters to you

that he is honoring your father?

18

:

Have not his servants come to

you to search and to overthrow

19

:

and to spy out the land?'

20

:

So Hanun took David's servants and

shaved them and cut off their garments

21

:

in the middle at their hips and

sent them away, and they departed.

22

:

When David was told concerning the

men, he sent messengers to meet them,

23

:

for the men were greatly ashamed.

24

:

And the king said, ' Remain

at Jericho until your beards

25

:

have grown, and then return.'"

26

:

I'll summarize this next portion of

the David is rightfully angry at the

27

:

way that they have dishonored his men

and misunderstood his pure intentions.

28

:

And when the Ammonites realize

that they haven't operated on

29

:

the highest level of diplomacy,

30

:

They hire thousands of chariots

and horsemen from Mesopotamia.

31

:

they've assembled all of their

men and are ready for battle.

32

:

When David hears of it, he

sends Joab and his mighty men,

33

:

And now they're ready to

do battle at two locations.

34

:

You know, Scripture doesn't always

give us the motivation of people's

35

:

hearts, but we know that David had

a pure intent to encourage Hanun.

36

:

If you're needing to remember

who the Ammonites are, They began

37

:

with Lot and his daughter after

Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed.

38

:

And they haven't always been

hospitable to the Israelites.

39

:

But David and Nahash, Hanun's

father, had peace, so he was

40

:

trying to do an honorable thing.

41

:

if we look at history, it seems

no one gets more paranoid than a

42

:

king, and perhaps rightfully so.

43

:

So you can't completely blame

the guy for being skeptical.

44

:

However, he took the good intent of

David, and he completely shamed them.

45

:

He sent them back exposed, and now

instead of just grieving the passing of

46

:

his father, he has to engage in battle.

47

:

I can't help but think of 1 Corinthians

13 when it says that love bears all

48

:

things, believes all things, hopes

all things, endures all things.

49

:

I'm not saying that Hanun

needed to love David.

50

:

We don't even know if

they knew each other yet.

51

:

But any life where we believe the worst

about people doesn't sound great to me.

52

:

We need to balance that with the fact

that Jesus told us to be as wise as

53

:

serpents and as innocent as doves.

54

:

It's okay to have discernment and to

be cautious about people's motives,

55

:

but Hanun's advisors went too far.

56

:

Speaker 20: I can think of some

circumstances that have happened

57

:

with some of my friends lately

where a teacher wronged their

58

:

child, like legit, it wasn't fair.

59

:

Speaker 21: I so respect the way my

friend handled it as she patiently

60

:

waited to collect all the information,

and then in a good-natured way, tried

61

:

to get the teacher's perspective.

62

:

Ultimately, I think this story can teach

us is that as we're training our kids to

63

:

work through conflict and to have wisdom,

we can think about James and our command

64

:

to be slow to speak and quick to listen.

65

:

We might not know if we can

trust, but we can try to get

66

:

to the heart of an issue first

67

:

before we overreact and regret it.

68

:

Have you ever heard of the 24-hour

email rule where you wait 24

69

:

hours before you send something?

70

:

It's just a good guideline.

71

:

And as Hanan was grieving, he probably

wasn't in the most neutral position

72

:

to make a good decision anyway, and

sometimes we need our friends to guide

73

:

us in moving forward in a righteous way.

74

:

Joab is sent out to battle by David,

and let's give him credit for the

75

:

way that he has faith as he says to

his brother, "Be strong, and let us

76

:

use our strength for our people and

for the cities of our God, and may

77

:

the Lord do what seems good to Him."

78

:

These brothers have frequently

engaged in battle together, and they

79

:

don't know if they're gonna survive.

80

:

But they'll give it

their all for the Lord.

81

:

And there's a connection from

this story to Psalm twenty.

82

:

Listen and see if you can hear it.

83

:

It's probably the verse

that you've heard the most.

84

:

" May the Lord answer you

in the day of trouble.

85

:

May the name of the God

of Jacob protect you.

86

:

May He send you help from the sanctuary

and give you support from Zion.

87

:

May He remember all your offerings and

regard with favor your burnt sacrifices.

88

:

May He grant you your heart's

desire and fulfill all your plans.

89

:

May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.

90

:

Now I know that the

Lord saves His anointed.

91

:

He will answer him from His holy heaven

with the saving might of His right hand.

92

:

Some trust in chariots and

some in horses, but we trust in

93

:

the name of the Lord our God.

94

:

They collapse and fall, but

we rise and stand upright.

95

:

Oh Lord, save the king.

96

:

May He answer us when we call."

97

:

Did you hear it?

98

:

In this battle, the Ammonites

had chariots and horsemen.

99

:

And I'll acknowledge that there was a

discrepancy between 1 Chronicles and 2

100

:

Samuel about how many chariots it was,

So one may have been due to a copying

101

:

error, but they left both in scripture

because the original translators

102

:

wanted to make sure that whichever

one was the truth was preserved.

103

:

Regardless, Israel was up

against an intimidating enemy.

104

:

Horses are absolutely beautiful and

majestic, but can you imagine them

105

:

stampeding towards you in chariots,

feeling the ground quake with the

106

:

thunder of their approach when all you

have is a little sword and a shield?

107

:

It's something consistent that these

enemies could rely on every time in

108

:

battle, their chariots and their horses.

109

:

But the God of the Bible is

so creative and so powerful.

110

:

He chose to defeat the enemies of

Israel in a different way nearly

111

:

every time, and they couldn't rely on

what they could see with their eyes.

112

:

They had to stand firm on their God.

113

:

I don't know what you would say

your horses or your chariots are

114

:

that you long to cling to, or the

things you're tempted to trust in.

115

:

Maybe it's a consistent paycheck, and

the Lord has you in a season where

116

:

He's providing in a new way every

month to meet your mortgage some trust

117

:

in chariots, some trust in horses,

but you have an opportunity to trust

118

:

in the name of the Lord your God.

119

:

Psalm 65 is also written by David.

120

:

" Praise is due to You, O God, in Zion,

and to You shall vows be performed.

121

:

O You who hear prayer, to

You shall all flesh come.

122

:

when iniquities prevail against me,

You atone for our transgressions.

123

:

Blessed is the one You choose and

bring near to dwell in Your courts.

124

:

We shall be satisfied with the goodness of

Your house, the holiness of Your temple."

125

:

See, in the beginning,

126

:

we hear that even- When we are

sinful, God chooses to bring

127

:

us near to dwell with Him.

128

:

And the rest of the Psalm

beautifully recounts God's

129

:

faithfulness to His creation.

130

:

And then Psalm 66: Shout for

joy to God all the earth.

131

:

Sing the glory of His name.

132

:

Give to Him glorious praise.

133

:

Say to God, "How awesome are Your deeds.

134

:

So great is Your power that Your

enemies come cringing to You."

135

:

All the earth worships You

and sings praises to You.

136

:

They sing praises to Your name, Selah.

137

:

Come and see what God has done.

138

:

He is awesome in His deeds

toward the children of man.

139

:

He turned the sea into dry land.

140

:

They passed through the river on foot.

141

:

There did we rejoice in Him who

rules by His might forever, whose

142

:

eyes keep watch on the nations.

143

:

Let not the rebellious

exalt themselves, Selah.

144

:

Bless our God, O peoples.

145

:

Let the sound of His praise be heard,

who has kept our soul among the

146

:

living and has not let our feet slip.

147

:

For You, O God, have tested us.

148

:

You have tried us as silver is tried.

149

:

You brought us into the net.

150

:

You laid a crushing burden on our backs.

151

:

You let men ride over our heads.

152

:

We went through fire and through

water, yet You have brought us

153

:

out to a place of abundance.

154

:

I will come into Your

house with burnt offerings.

155

:

I will perform my vows to You.

156

:

That which my lips uttered and

my mouth promised when I was in

157

:

trouble, I will offer to You burnt

offerings of fattened animals with

158

:

the smoke of the sacrifice of rams.

159

:

I will make an offering of

bulls and goats, Selah.

160

:

Come and hear, all you who

fear God, and I will tell you

161

:

what He has done for my soul.

162

:

I cried to Him with my mouth and

high praise was on my tongue.

163

:

If I had cherished iniquity in my

heart, the Lord would not have listened.

164

:

But truly, God has listened.

165

:

He has attended to the voice of my prayer.

166

:

Blessed be God because He has

not rejected my prayer or removed

167

:

His steadfast love from me.

168

:

This is a God that lets us go

through difficult times and seasons

169

:

but He is ever faithful and

truly worthy of our praise.

170

:

Lord, we thank you for your steadfast

love and that you do not reject us.

171

:

Thank you that you faithfully forgive

our transgressions, but also that you

172

:

call us to something higher and holier.

173

:

You never fail, but you often

act in creative and unique ways

174

:

to rescue us, giving us an

opportunity to build our faith.

175

:

You are the same God that defeated

horses and chariots and provides

176

:

for His creation, and we know that

you're the same God that cares for us.

177

:

Lord, would you convict each of

us if there's something we're

178

:

trusting in other than you?

179

:

as we try to throw off all that the world

promises will help us parent and produce

180

:

talented, capable, self-assured children,

help us to choose instead to follow your

181

:

Word, and I pray that we would see the

fruit and blessing of those decisions

182

:

Teaching our children to not

trust in the things of this world,

183

:

but to look to your goodness.

184

:

Thank you, Jesus, for the way

that you guide us in wisdom.

185

:

It's in your name we pray, amen.

186

:

Speaker 23: Sometimes I wish we had

a little bit more time to meditate on

187

:

scripture and to memorize it together.

188

:

And this is one of those verses I think

can bring us so much encouragement.

189

:

Psalm 20:7.

190

:

" Some trust in chariots and

some in horses, but we trust in

191

:

the name of the Lord our God."

192

:

Let's say it again.

193

:

Psalm 20:7.

194

:

" Some trust in chariots and

some in horses, but we trust in

195

:

the name of the Lord our God."

196

:

meditate on.

197

:

Psalm 66:20.

198

:

" Blessed be God, because He has

not rejected my prayer or removed

199

:

His steadfast love from me."

200

:

Let's say it again.

201

:

Psalm 66:20.

202

:

" Blessed be God, because He has

not rejected my prayer or removed

203

:

His steadfast love from me."

204

:

His heart for you is all

throughout the pages of scripture.
