Prayer 2021 - May 20 - The Prayer of Persistence pt 1

Luke 18:1

“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that

they should always pray and not give up.”

The Prayer of Persistence

Luke recorded something about faith and prayer that neither Mark nor Matthew said. Luke talked about the importance of persistence in prayer. That is, being persistent in your faith and in your praying.

But many Christians misunderstand what Jesus is saying here. They believe Jesus is saying that we are to keep on asking and, eventually, you will get what you want.” But that is not what is being taught here. Let’s look at the entire story:

Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread;  a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’  And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity, he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.”

Here was a man who had a friend who arrived at his house in the nighttime. The man didn’t have any bread prepared to set before his friend. So he went to his neighbor and asked to borrow three loaves of bread.

The friend said, “I’m already in bed. My kids are in bed, too.” Then in verse eight, Jesus says,

I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity, he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.”

If you take this passage literally, it appears as if God is the friend in bed. However, we know God never sleeps from Psalm 121:3-4). So we know Jesus is showing us an analogy to prove a point.

Jesus is simply saying that, even in the natural, you could get results from a friend like this man did. Not necessarily because the person was your friend, but because of your urgent request. In other words, the man got up and gave his friend the bread, not because he was his friend, but because the friend would not take no for an answer.

Then, Jesus goes into his, “Ask and it shall be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door shall be opened unto you,” in Luke 11:9. Amen! Praise God. See how all of this ties together?

You see, it is the persistence of FAITH, not the persistence of unbelief, that gets the job done and your prayers answered.

You could just keep going on and on, begging God and being persistent in your begging. And you will never see the results you want because you are being persistent in begging, demonstrating unbelief. God is not moved by unbelief, but by faith. Amen.

If you are praying and have not seen the results manifest yet, don’t go back and ask God for the same thing in the same manner and using the same words again. To do so demonstrates your lack of faith that you “received when you prayed.” That puts you over into doubt and unbelief, not faith.

You just need to remind God that THANK HIM for answering your prayer request. Remind Him of His Word and, as Isaiah 43:26 tells us, “put Him in rememberance” of His Word. Not that He has forgotten it, don’t get me wrong. But that YOU have not forgotten His promises. Amen! That is the difference.

Jesus is not teaching us to “keep on asking and pestering God until He gives in and gives you what you want.” NO.

He is telling us to keep on THANKING GOD for the promises that we HAVE RECEIVED the answer because we know His promises are YES and AMEN and that we “believed we have received when we prayed.”

Keep on THANKING and PRAISING GOD – not begging for answers.
