Speaker:

Hello and welcome to the

Crochet Business School Podcast.

2

:

I'm your host, Kelly Thomas, and I'm going

to help you to make your crochet dreams

3

:

a reality stitch by stitch, and show

you how you can create a successful and

4

:

profitable business using your crochet.

5

:

Keeping a flexible lifestyle

so you don't have to sacrifice

6

:

too much time with your family.

7

:

Is your New Year's resolution to finally

get started selling a crochet or making

8

:

a bit of money from your crochet?

9

:

Is that what you finally

want to get doing?

10

:

Maybe people have been trying to persuade

you to do it for years, maybe thinking

11

:

it'll be great to have a, a change of

direction when it comes to your career.

12

:

Maybe it's just something you've always

wondered if you can actually do it.

13

:

Well, why not make that

your goal for:

14

:

Because there is absolutely no reason why

you cannot get started from making money

15

:

from your crochet right now because you

have everything you need, you actually do

16

:

because you've got yarn, you've got hooks.

17

:

If you are listening to

this, you've got internet.

18

:

If you've got a smartphone that can

take pictures, you've got it all because

19

:

those are just the basics that you need.

20

:

Yes, there are other things that

are you could do with doing,

21

:

but none of it costs very much.

22

:

So if you're worried about the cost

of actually selling your crochet, you

23

:

don't have to pay a thing up front.

24

:

If you've got your yarn, if you've

got hooks, then you can start your

25

:

business with what you have right now.

26

:

You need the internet.

27

:

You need to be able to take pictures.

28

:

That's it.

29

:

It is really, really easy to start.

30

:

Now, depending on where you are

in the world, you may have local,

31

:

um, licenses that you need.

32

:

Here in the uk you don't need one,

but I believe in some parts of

33

:

the US you do, you are going to

have to check out, um, your local

34

:

business center to find that out.

35

:

But otherwise, you're good to

go In terms of materials, you've

36

:

got everything you need, so.

37

:

Surely it's not that easy, right?

38

:

Well, it can be.

39

:

It absolutely can be.

40

:

The hardest part of selling your

crochet is one, discovering your

41

:

niche, because we kind of just want to

crochet whatever we want and sell that.

42

:

If you are just looking to make a bit

of extra cash to fund your yarn or

43

:

just have a little bit of fun money,

then you absolutely can do that.

44

:

Yeah, but if you want to make your

crochet business something that you

45

:

can live off that pays all your bills

and gives you the money to live,

46

:

then you've gotta get more strategic.

47

:

You need a niche, because think of where

you find lots of different random items,

48

:

and it's gonna be things like discount

stores, bargain stores, jumble sales.

49

:

Places where you don't

expect to pay very much.

50

:

Think about when you go down the

High Street, think about the stores

51

:

that they have, and they tend

to specialize in certain items.

52

:

So there'll be clothing stores

that specialize in kids,

53

:

babies, teens clothing, women's

clothing, men's clothing.

54

:

And if they have all of that in one

store, they tend to be the big department

55

:

stores, but they have them separated

into their own individual departments.

56

:

It's not all mixed up together.

57

:

Higgeldy, Higgeldy, it's all

arranged nicely so that you can go

58

:

to each department that you need to.

59

:

But most stores on the high streets

in your shopping center, they tend

60

:

to specialize in certain things.

61

:

So here in the uk, if I go

down the high street, if I want

62

:

electronics, I can go to Curry's.

63

:

If I want, um, shoes,

I can go to Shoe Zone.

64

:

You can tell how long it's been

done since I went down the high

65

:

street with what I'm saying here.

66

:

I don't, I do all my

shopping on the internet.

67

:

I, I don't like in-person shopping,

but, um, you'll get the jewelry shop,

68

:

you'll get the shoe shops, you'll

get the shops with just baby stuff.

69

:

Uh, you get the mobile phone shops.

70

:

They have their own specialty

and your crochet is the same.

71

:

It needs a specialty.

72

:

If someone is going shopping, what

are they shopping for you for?

73

:

Because your niche can't be crochet.

74

:

Your customers.

75

:

They don't care that it's crochet.

76

:

And I think this shocks a lot of people,

but no one cares that you're crochet.

77

:

No one cares how it's made.

78

:

They care what it looks like.

79

:

They care that it's quality.

80

:

They care that it's exclusive, and

that's what you gotta tap into.

81

:

And that's why you need a niche.

82

:

They need to know what's remember you for?

83

:

Are you making bags?

84

:

Are you selling things that

you need for a wedding?

85

:

Are you selling things for baby's nursery?

86

:

It's these kind of niches that

you need, and the more you niche,

87

:

the more it helps your prices.

88

:

Because if you have a

niche, you can charge more.

89

:

The more specialized the niche, the

more you can charge and is that price

90

:

point that you are looking for in order

to make a living from your crochet.

91

:

Because what you need, always

need to remember is, is that

92

:

your crochet is a luxury.

93

:

It is not an everyday good.

94

:

It is not an essential.

95

:

Nothing about crochet is essential because

you can never outprice someone who sells a

96

:

hat that is made through machine knitting.

97

:

You can't do it.

98

:

Machines will always be faster.

99

:

They can be mass produced.

100

:

Crochet can be made by machine,

which means it always needs to be

101

:

handmade, which means it's slower

to make, which means you just cannot

102

:

compete with that price point.

103

:

Don't bother.

104

:

Crochets are luxury.

105

:

Price it like a luxury.

106

:

It can be difficult to do because

all the mind monkeys get in your

107

:

head saying, you can't charge that.

108

:

No one's gonna buy it at that price.

109

:

They will, because you are going

to tell them that it's a luxury.

110

:

You're going to tell them

how well it's crafted.

111

:

You are going to tell

them how exclusive it is.

112

:

That all becomes part of

how you sell your crochet.

113

:

I might be jumping too

far ahead for you here.

114

:

But if you are determined to make

a living from your crochet, these

115

:

are things you have to think about.

116

:

They are fundamentals way we

price is directly related to

117

:

how much money we bring in.

118

:

'cause just because you make a sale

doesn't mean that that entire price

119

:

is your profit because you've got

to cover the cost of your yarn.

120

:

You've gotta cover the cost of your

time, or how do you pay yourself?

121

:

You've got to cover the cost of the fees.

122

:

Because no matter how you

sell, there are fees involved.

123

:

If you set up a social media page

and you only sell on Facebook, for

124

:

example, you still gotta take payment.

125

:

Most people take it through

either PayPal or Stripe.

126

:

They charge their fees, so

you still gotta pay a fee.

127

:

If you sell through Etsy or Shopify,

you've gotta pay their fees.

128

:

Most of the ways that we sell a crochet,

the fees only get paid once we sell.

129

:

So you don't necessarily

have to pay anything upfront.

130

:

So getting started selling a

crochet is free, but there are

131

:

fees that come later and you've

gotta build that into your prices.

132

:

If you are going to make money from

your crochet, you've gotta start

133

:

thinking about the finances and

how you charge and how you pay for

134

:

everything straight from the goat.

135

:

Just because you have yarn in your

stash that you're going to use to

136

:

get started, it doesn't mean that

that yarn doesn't have to be paid

137

:

for because you did pay for it.

138

:

At some point,

139

:

you gotta start thinking like a business.

140

:

Just because you know how to crochet,

it doesn't mean you know about

141

:

how to make your business work.

142

:

It's a completely different

skill, and you've gotta learn

143

:

these things along the way.

144

:

That's why I'm here, to help you to

make your crochet business a success

145

:

so that you do get paid what you're

worth, so that you do sell your crochet.

146

:

And, you know, have happy customers.

147

:

Sales are coming in, but you also get

paid what you and your crochet are worth.

148

:

And it's a journey.

149

:

It's a lot to take in because

you've got to be the, um, the

150

:

product line, product making line.

151

:

You've got to be the secretary,

you've got to be the finance

152

:

officer, the accounting person.

153

:

You've got to be the marketing person.

154

:

You've gotta do it all.

155

:

All by yourself, and it's a lot to learn.

156

:

It's a very steep learning curve

if you want to do it properly.

157

:

Most crochet business don't

fail because they can't crochet.

158

:

They fail because they can't make

it pay and not being able to make

159

:

it pay is a much of a problem with

all the voices in your head that

160

:

have been really negative as it is

about putting the right price tag.

161

:

You can be your own worst enemy in

this, or you can say, yes, it can

162

:

be done, and I'm going to learn how

163

:

crocheters are notorious

for undercharging.

164

:

We are notorious for

underestimating our abilities.

165

:

We are notorious for

underselling ourselves.

166

:

We kind of like to be a bit too modest.

167

:

Instead of shouting about how fantastic we

are, we tend to cower down and go, yeah,

168

:

it's, it's just a bit of something I made.

169

:

Yeah.

170

:

Sorry about the price.

171

:

It's a bit expensive, but I've

gotta pay for the yarn and Yeah.

172

:

So yeah, it's just a, yeah.

173

:

So it's all this and that's gotta go.

174

:

Don't do that.

175

:

You don't have to explain your

prices, you don't have to apologize

176

:

for them, and it's not just crochet.

177

:

It's a skill.

178

:

It's a handcrafted skill.

179

:

And what you make is very exclusive

because there's only so much crochet

180

:

you can do in the time of you have in

the day, which makes everything you do

181

:

exclusive, which makes it luxurious.

182

:

And why shouldn't you charge for that?

183

:

Your time is worth it.

184

:

And that's what you have to

remember from the get go.

185

:

If you are crochet, gonna pay

your bills, you have to do this.

186

:

You have to get used to thinking

that way, and you have to

187

:

get used to talking that way.

188

:

You have to be confident and show

the quality, show the exclusiveness,

189

:

and that's what means that you

can price the price that you need.

190

:

Nothing to do with anybody else

because there will always be

191

:

people who will self lower.

192

:

We are not doing a race to the bottom.

193

:

We are not in the bargain basement.

194

:

We are handcrafted, exclusive artisans.

195

:

Skilled.

196

:

The price is high.

197

:

It's got to be,

198

:

and that takes a lot

of gain news to I know.

199

:

It does.

200

:

I've been there, done that.

201

:

It's really hard.

202

:

And actually my biggest enemy was myself.

203

:

I did not charge enough when I

first started, purely because

204

:

of the negative voices in my own

head, and that was no one else.

205

:

That was me.

206

:

We can sabotage ourselves spectacularly,

207

:

and so you've gotta get

over this very quickly.

208

:

So if you are ready to make your

crochet business a success, get started

209

:

and make sure everything's in place.

210

:

:

:

your crochet except for you.

233

:

And getting the pricing right

is absolutely fundamental.

234

:

'cause if you don't make the money

that you need from every sale, then you

may as well be giving a crochet away.
