Welcome to the Buckets and Boom Gates Studio with Kim White and Jill Olish. This week's conversation in the Team Series dives deeper into delegating. They discuss how delegating can bring time back to your schedule that you need for doing business or doing life. Listen along for some more confessions.
Knowing these things before you start to delegate will keep you from giving up and encourage you to keep looking for the right person for your team. Start practicing delegating now, write down the processes in your business now, it actually can be easier to delegate when you do it from the beginning.

Welcome back.
2
:We are back in the BBG studio buckets and
boom gates of what we're talking about.
3
:And we are here for episode 72.
4
:And I'm joined with Kim White, the
Princess Kim White from My Sexy Business.
5
:You are the fierce Kim Founder
of the team and community there.
6
:I'm so excited to be here having this
conversation again, talking more about
7
:delegating and I am Jill Olish and
team member of my sexy business and
8
:founder of mama outspoken learning right
along as we talk all these things out.
9
:So.
10
:We are revisiting where we left off from
the last episode, all about delegating.
11
:Kim, where are we going today?
12
:Oh my goodness.
13
:Don't.
14
:Well, thank you for
the great introduction.
15
:I feel like this is such a deep thing.
16
:People take it lightly
to delegate something.
17
:They're like, yeah, we'll just delegate
that when you delegate something
18
:the right way, and it brings time
back to your schedule that you need
19
:for doing business or doing life.
20
:Let me say that.
21
:Um, I just think this is worth
taking the time to go through
22
:these little details about it.
23
:So, if, if you're already a Master
Delegator and you don't have any
24
:trouble on your team and you don't,
maybe you can skip this episode, I
25
:wouldn't recommend it, but maybe?
26
:But for the rest of us humans,
I think it's really important
27
:to have this conversation.
28
:Oh yeah.
29
:Um, especially, you know, this podcast
is for entrepreneurs and a lot of times
30
:beginning entrepreneurs as well as
entrepreneurs wanting to level up or
31
:take a next step in their business and
delegating might just be that next step
32
:and learning how to do it the right way.
33
:And so the wrong way.
34
:Is key because it's powerful as Kim
says, and if you didn't listen to the
35
:last episode to see the wrong way or
to hear about the wrong way of doing
36
:it, go back and listen to that one.
37
:Lots of confessions go on here.
38
:Let me just say that the
studio is full of confessions.
39
:Continuing this conversation though,
when you're, when you're thinking of
40
:delegating, let me say that when you're
thinking of delegating something,
41
:Is it because you want more to do
because that's something to consider?
42
:Are you cleaning off your calendar
so that you can handle more clients?
43
:Are you cleaning off your calendar so
that you can be home more with your kids?
44
:Are you cleaning off your calendar?
45
:Like, why are you cleaning
off your calendar?
46
:And I think when you look at
that, that piece of it, Look for
47
:the place that's the most painful
for getting that time you need.
48
:So for me, email is definitely
always a top contender.
49
:I'll just like be out there with that.
50
:That is one of the hardest
things for me personally.
51
:And I think I share that with
millions of other entrepreneurs
52
:is when we are, when we are having
to communicate back and forth.
53
:We're communicating with our clients,
our team or whatever, or we're being
54
:solicited all the time because if you
have a great website, these are just some
55
:of the problems I want to discuss, Jill.
56
:Um, when you have a great website,
you actually get a lot of nonsense
57
:emails because people see you
as successful on your website.
58
:So then all of a sudden they
want to sell you something.
59
:A lot of people out there take that
approach to their businesses that
60
:they're soliciting all the time.
61
:So my email is full of some of that
stuff that is just no thank you or
62
:delete or whatever it is that takes time.
63
:I don't want to spend my time doing
that when there are people who, and I'm
64
:going to give an example for our team.
65
:I am very heart centered when it comes
to why we have such a great team.
66
:I want our team to be able to benefit
in their life for being on the team.
67
:So sometimes to kick off a business, it
takes starting on someone else's team.
68
:Before you understand how to
create your own team or your own
69
:business or whatever that is.
70
:I love the fact that this part of our
business that we're doing the podcast
71
:the The website you see the all of that.
72
:I love that.
73
:This is the side of the business.
74
:I get the privilege and honor
to train other people to do
75
:things Like this makes me happy.
76
:This part just, it makes my heart sing
when somebody has a light bulb moment or
77
:they understand how to do something and
now for maybe someone else, or they can
78
:do it for their own business, whatever
it is, but me having time was where this
79
:all started, like me having time because
I was so busy with clients, I didn't have
80
:time to train, I didn't have time to do
some of the things that I love to do.
81
:So knowing why you're going to
delegate something, I feel like is
82
:a piece of the puzzle that will help
you know where to start delegating.
83
:I don't want to delegate
the parts I love at first.
84
:So if you pick out the most painful
thing though, which is what a lot
85
:of us do, that can also create a
harder time of delegating because
86
:you're not first at delegating yet.
87
:So if I hate something, that's
the thing I want to delegate.
88
:Maybe it is because I don't know
how to do it, or maybe it is
89
:because I'm not very good at that.
90
:And if you don't get clear instructions
to delegate, They're not going to
91
:know how to do it either, y'all.
92
:I was going to be my question, but can I
not just delegate the things I don't know
93
:how to, like, it really is, can I delegate
the things that I don't know how to do?
94
:Because like you're saying, obviously
it might mean that I don't like them.
95
:Doing it at first in my eyes because
I don't know how to do it for me.
96
:That was social media.
97
:I just didn't enjoy it at all.
98
:And I wanted someone else to be
on the team doing it and not me.
99
:And then I had to do it for myself, but
I also learned a better way of doing it.
100
:So now I am doing it both for
the team and myself in a way.
101
:I'm back to square one,
but I don't hate it now.
102
:So.
103
:Are there really things though that we
can delegate that we don't know how to do?
104
:Always.
105
:Like there are always things we want
to delegate that we don't know how to
106
:do, but I'm not sure that's the right
place to start because when you're
107
:starting out to delegate, what's
going to benefit you the most in time
108
:is really where you need to start.
109
:And I'm going to say something kind
of controversial here and I'm okay.
110
:Just save your hate for somebody else.
111
:Um, I think a lot of times we need
to consider what's going to help us
112
:make more money because the bottom
line is if you're not making money in
113
:your business, you can't have a team
because they need to be paid as well.
114
:And this is a really like, I'm going
to call it a sketchy part of this is if
115
:you're delegating just minutia stuff, And
you're not delegating something that's
116
:actually going to help you be able to
go out more money, then you're just kind
117
:of trading, you're trading off things.
118
:I think it's really important, especially
in the beginning as an entrepreneur,
119
:what can you delegate that will
actually give you the time to deal
120
:with maybe more clients or customers
so that you're getting a little bit
121
:of a buffer so that you can afford to
hire someone maybe a little bit more.
122
:Experienced on your team, or you can,
you can do training your own self to
123
:learn how to do something if you need
to, but that just getting rid of the
124
:things we don't like, and then, and
I'm going to laugh and say, and eating
125
:bonbons on the couch and watching
soap operas in the afternoon, that to
126
:me is not the right way to delegate.
127
:You really need to delegate things.
128
:In the beginning, especially that
are going to give you the time
129
:that you need so that you can make
more money so that you can delegate
130
:more because that's part of the
different way of thinking about this.
131
:It is, you're building a business
that's going to support your life,
132
:but if you have a team, guess what?
133
:You're not only using that
business to support your life.
134
:You're using that business
to support an entire.
135
:other family or an
entire team of families?
136
:I'm writing down notes
because I'm getting ideas.
137
:Um, I'm getting questions,
all kinds of stuff.
138
:But, um, let's see, where do I want to go?
139
:How then do I, so I'm just starting out.
140
:You started out pretty much
delegating with your email and
141
:We don't want to delegate things
that we don't know how to do.
142
:And we want to delegate when we are
ready to clear our calendar to add
143
:something new or something that's
gonna, you know, start moving the
144
:needle someplace in our business.
145
:So what am I looking
for as a business owner?
146
:That's going to tell me that I'm
ready to, to hand something off, to
147
:open up my calendar for that thing.
148
:Like, is that like where we want to, like,
is that a question I can ask right now?
149
:Yes, yes, yes, yes.
150
:I think the biggest thing is if you
are maxed out on your time, And you
151
:cannot make more money unless you do
something different with your time.
152
:So I do not believe in
trading time for money.
153
:I do not believe that that is
the right way to look at it.
154
:I think that is the, you know,
the corporate experience.
155
:If I show up for eight hours,
I get paid for eight hours.
156
:That's time, time for money.
157
:Your time is priceless.
158
:You can always make more money.
159
:You can't always make more time.
160
:So I want as an entrepreneur
and a business owner, you
161
:have to take that part out.
162
:But if I am so maxed out on my
calendar, my business cannot grow.
163
:I'm so maxed out on my calendar
that my life is suffering.
164
:It is past time to delegate.
165
:So if you are feeling those
feelings, like, yes, you, you need
166
:to learn to delegate, but here's
the problem with most people.
167
:They don't understand.
168
:When you start to delegate,
your calendar gets worse.
169
:It, it takes, it takes a minute to
get something off your calendar.
170
:It takes sometimes longer.
171
:Well, no, it always takes
longer than you want it to.
172
:It always takes more
effort than you want it to.
173
:I think that's just a given, but knowing
that before you start to delegate will
174
:keep you from giving up and knowing that
finding the right person can take you a
175
:little bit of time because maybe you go
through a dozen assistants who they don't
176
:really gel with you or they don't really,
quite frankly, they don't really like you.
177
:They just are there.
178
:So you pay them, which happens and there's
nothing wrong with them wanting a job.
179
:I think that You know, they're
supporting their families, but I
180
:need somebody who's more invested
than just wanting their paycheck.
181
:I need somebody who, who cares what
happens to our clients, who cares
182
:what happens to our masterminders
because they're there for a bigger
183
:reason than just the paycheck.
184
:So, so there is a, there is a
process I'm going to call it of
185
:looking for the right people.
186
:In the beginning, you don't really
always know what that looks like.
187
:Somebody can say the right
things to you and you're like,
188
:yeah, that's the perfect person.
189
:And then they don't show up
four out of the five days.
190
:You need them.
191
:They're constantly changing the
schedule where their schedule can't
192
:even coordinate with your schedule to
do the things like there are signs.
193
:There are signs that you need to
find a different person because
194
:that, that is just how it is.
195
:Humans.
196
:Supporting and helping is
what delegation looks like.
197
:So let me support you and
giving you an opportunity.
198
:Let me support you and giving
you opportunity for training.
199
:Let me support you in this way.
200
:But what I need back is I need you
to support me and getting me more
201
:time so I can help more people.
202
:Like it's not just a straight across
the board and paying someone is an
203
:investment in them right out of the.
204
:Right out of the gate.
205
:If you're paying someone to delegate
to them, you're investing in them.
206
:You have to watch and make sure they're
investing back because if they're
207
:not investing their time, they're
showing up after partying all night.
208
:They're, they're stressed out with
something else and they're not really
209
:doing the job you've asked them to do.
210
:Those are things that you've really got
to consider as a business owner and I'm
211
:gonna be kind of a meanie real quick.
212
:Business is business.
213
:We don't harm humans in the process.
214
:But we also have a boom gate for
humans not harming us in the process.
215
:So hard conversations
come with delegation.
216
:Being honest with you and them being
honest with, you know, themselves.
217
:Those are hard, hard things.
218
:But all of that is married
into a great delegation.
219
:It's all married into if it's
going to be successful long term.
220
:I, I sometimes need somebody
just to do a project.
221
:Like, here's a project, go do this, and
we'll figure out what that looks like.
222
:But a true team, and that's what this
series is about, a true team is not just
223
:one project somewhere with somebody.
224
:A team is, we're all working
together for this goal, and yes,
225
:the team is compensated financially,
they, they get money for doing
226
:that, but it's bigger than that.
227
:It's I care about you.
228
:So if you're having a hard time,
how can I support you right now?
229
:Because Next week, maybe I'm
having a hard time and you're going
230
:to support me when I'm having.
231
:So there's a lot of still
unpacking to do with this Jill.
232
:And I feel like I need to just
stop because I could probably
233
:go on and on and on about this.
234
:Oh, and I'm glad you brought up
a little bit of the team part.
235
:Cause we talked about that in episode.
236
:69 I believe and 70 cause that's one of
the ones that I messed up the number.
237
:We talked a lot about, you know,
how people are showing up and
238
:putting in their time to, to, um,
cause you bring up a good point.
239
:Like we're as business owners, we
get to be to a point in our business
240
:where we're needing the extra support
and that's why we would build a team.
241
:But what is the worth of
a team if they're not?
242
:Supporting because you're supporting them
and you need that support right back from
243
:them and the a game and all of the things
that we talked about in that episode all
244
:fit right into being delegatable because
that might be the other half of being
245
:able to delegate is someone delegatable.
246
:Also, you are spot on.
247
:You are, we're not going there though.
248
:That's going to be on my
notes for next time as well.
249
:I love it.
250
:So Jill, Jill is, um, princess hurting.
251
:I'm going to say that was one of the
things we talked about because we
252
:can make these episodes five hours
long with, with all the conversation.
253
:It's so such good stuff, but we
also want this to be something
254
:that you take from this episode.
255
:And you find something, even if it's just
one thing, one thing to consider, one
256
:thing to implement, one thing that you can
change about how you're delegating things.
257
:Even if it's, you're thinking about
delegating, consider these things.
258
:Or even just the process.
259
:Start writing out your processes now.
260
:That way you're not
having to remember back.
261
:Well, how do I do this again?
262
:I think that might be one of my team
confessions is as you're learning
263
:it yourself, write it all out so you
can tell someone else down the line,
264
:how it is done in your business.
265
:So if we have a rule on the team
that we'll do, I think we'll
266
:probably end up with a whole
episode of this at some point.
267
:And that is, the rule is, it's
required on our team anyway
268
:to make yourself promotable.
269
:It's not so that we can do without you.
270
:It's so that we have the ability to
train someone else to do what you're
271
:doing, or maybe what you're not, what's
not your favorite to do, so that they
272
:can be successful at it, and you can do
something and learn something different,
273
:or uplevel your own training things.
274
:So promotable is like a good thing.
275
:People think that you know,
you're trying to get rid of me.
276
:No, we're trying to literally promote you.
277
:Yeah.
278
:So when you say that Jill, I think of all
the times that I've given you instructions
279
:that were terrible instructions because
I've been doing something for 20 years.
280
:I don't even remember what I
didn't know in the beginning.
281
:So, it is gold, y'all, if you're listening
to any part of this, it is gold what
282
:Jill said about writing down while you're
learning, what didn't you know, or what
283
:do you know now, and that process of
creating that process, it actually can
284
:be easier to delegate when you do it
from the beginning, instead of waiting
285
:20 years to, to delegate something.
286
:What, what are you not telling them?
287
:What are you not giving them in the
process that they really need to be
288
:successful for their sake and yours?
289
:Good, good, good stuff.
290
:I
291
:can't wait to pick this up again, but
before we leave, we wanted to send an
292
:invitation to you listening to join
us in Groundwork Brigade Open House,
293
:which we have monthly, and that's
where this podcast came from also is
294
:our Groundwork Brigade Mastermind,
where we have entrepreneurs, business
295
:owners, all in this group, learning,
Alongside each other, what adventure
296
:they're on for their businesses,
bringing questions to the table.
297
:Like we just went over
today about delegating and.
298
:Every aspect of our business is to
make sure that we can have a business
299
:that we own and doesn't own us.
300
:So we have the opportunity to
feel how powerful delegating is
301
:and all the other things that
we do in business can be for us.
302
:Um, yeah.
303
:So something just crossed my mind, Joel,
when you said that, that, I don't know
304
:if it's crossed my mind before, but
we are spilling the T on the podcast.
305
:And it's our freebie.
306
:Like you can come on and get all
the information from the podcast,
307
:but we can only do so much per week.
308
:The community, which is a mastermind
community that Jill was talking about.
309
:That's kind of the fast track version.
310
:You don't have to wait until we
come out with episode, you know,
311
:712 to get an answer, you can come
into the community and ask us.
312
:Ask the question and get answered.
313
:So just, I don't know why that just, that
just bubbled up Jill, just bubbled up.
314
:So you have questions now,
come join us in mastermind.
315
:Exactly.
316
:Exactly.
317
:Well, I think that's it for today in
the studio, Kim, and we'll be back
318
:here in the BBG studio next week.
319
:Love y'all.
