Speaker:

Happy Sunday, everybody.

2

:

Hey.

3

:

Hey, Hey.

4

:

I was noticing that this last week, cause

I was, uh, put in all of our podcasts up

5

:

and editing them that that's how I start.

6

:

All of them is, Hey, so you guys

are probably sick of me saying,

7

:

Hey, edgy, but Hey yo, it's Sunday.

8

:

What up?

9

:

Yeah.

10

:

Yeah, I will vary it.

11

:

This is going to be another one of

those that's helpful situations where

12

:

we're going to say, you know what?

13

:

We got to change it up.

14

:

We can't just flavor all of our

conversations with the same seasoning.

15

:

That's true.

16

:

Although there is something about

being known for a particular intro.

17

:

You or, you know, I like your outro.

18

:

Go read your Bible and

pray, stop complaining.

19

:

Is that how you say your Bibles?

20

:

That's the one build that

bridge and get over it.

21

:

Put those together.

22

:

Yeah.

23

:

Read your Bible built a bridge.

24

:

Yeah.

25

:

I, I like, I like some of those

things, those taglines are good.

26

:

Uh, but maybe we need to just flavor,

you know, a little bit of Rosemary

27

:

here in there a little bit of time.

28

:

Uh, a little bit of a what's that

Tony Carrie's Tony Chica dairies.

29

:

Gary's chickpeas.

30

:

That's what, there may come us out of.

31

:

No.

32

:

No, not that.

33

:

It's a green bottle with this

cartoonized cartoon chef Tony spinach.

34

:

Papa is here.

35

:

You're thinking of.

36

:

Chef Boyardee.

37

:

That's probably it.

38

:

Yeah.

39

:

And that's the one.

40

:

Yep.

41

:

I used to eat that when I was

a kid, I loved that stuff, man.

42

:

With the meatballs in, yes.

43

:

That's so good out of the camp.

44

:

I haven't had it for years and

something tells me if I tried it

45

:

today, I probably wouldn't like it.

46

:

Dan.

47

:

We're looking at you.

48

:

Looking for some SpaghettiOs

at church on Sunday.

49

:

I am not.

50

:

He is pastor PG and I would

love to share a can together.

51

:

Hey, I'll eat SpaghettiOs.

52

:

Really?

53

:

I'm not above it.

54

:

I'm not saying I'm above it.

55

:

I just feel like my palate has changed

a little bit since I was a kid.

56

:

Okay.

57

:

But.

58

:

Yeah.

59

:

I mean, come on.

60

:

We survive college on top ramen.

61

:

Like the bagged stuff.

62

:

99 cents for like 10 of them.

63

:

So my dad learned this thing

in prison called the spread.

64

:

I've told you about this.

65

:

Okay.

66

:

It's what I've just, you

just casually dropped that.

67

:

I don't know that everybody

was expecting such things.

68

:

Well, I mean, I've got a varied life.

69

:

Yeah, I thank God for my life.

70

:

And I think.

71

:

Thank God for my dad.

72

:

Uh, so my dad.

73

:

We've learned it called a spread.

74

:

Basically you, you, you cook some,

some top ramen or sit, not some top

75

:

ramen and then the noodle packs, you

can just put a bunch of those packs in.

76

:

And a bang.

77

:

You boil it as usual.

78

:

You buy a bag of chips or two,

ideally the more, the better.

79

:

And then you lay a bed

of chips on the bottom.

80

:

You put the, uh, you put the

noodles on top and then you

81

:

take like a can of roast beef.

82

:

But that on top of that, And

then you kind of flavor it with a

83

:

little bit of salt or pepper here.

84

:

Oh, I forgot a big ingredient.

85

:

You put Manet's in the noodles.

86

:

So it's Matt Manet's noodles with

roast beef on top, on a bed of chips.

87

:

And you'll just have to trust me.

88

:

It is delicious.

89

:

He learned it in prison.

90

:

He brought it home.

91

:

We'd loved it.

92

:

When's the last time you had that.

93

:

Again, probably the same

time I had the SpaghettiOs.

94

:

Okay.

95

:

Dan Mayer, we're looking at you.

96

:

He needs some spread brought to church.

97

:

You know what I'm going to

ask my dad for the recipe.

98

:

In fact, I'll text him during

this podcast to say, dad, I

99

:

need the recipe to the spread.

100

:

He'll know what I'm talking about.

101

:

He'll know.

102

:

No, he'll pick up what

you're putting down.

103

:

I'm sure he will.

104

:

In fact, you probably, he

probably makes it on the regular.

105

:

I'm going to text him right now.

106

:

You probably do your dad.

107

:

Dear Dan, please send me

a recipe for the spread.

108

:

This is why people.

109

:

Tune into our podcast texting right now.

110

:

Let's see.

111

:

Let's see if he comes back during.

112

:

Live.

113

:

During the podcast he might

tell me, and I could share the

114

:

exact recipe with you guys.

115

:

Did you ever see the.

116

:

The Sonic movie.

117

:

The, uh, live-action one or whatever.

118

:

Yeah.

119

:

Yeah.

120

:

Yeah.

121

:

Yeah.

122

:

But Jim Carey.

123

:

Yeah, and he's waiting for it

to come back and he's going dot.

124

:

Dot dot.

125

:

dot.dot because.

126

:

The knuckles, the bad guy is, oh,

Watching the text message come back and

127

:

like, you know how the three dots are.

128

:

And reading the text and

he's like dot, dot, dot.

129

:

That's funny.

130

:

So it's really funny.

131

:

I'm just waiting for that.

132

:

When with the response.

133

:

We're all on pins and needles.

134

:

I can imagine he might have to wait.

135

:

I know he works.

136

:

So he may not do to answer

for a little bit, but right.

137

:

Well, fair enough.

138

:

We'll uh, we'll we'll give him some time.

139

:

Okay.

140

:

Well, Hey.

141

:

Uh, let's jump into Proverbs

chapter:

142

:

Hey, sounds good.

143

:

Hey.

144

:

Let's do it.

145

:

All right.

146

:

Proverbs chapter 19.

147

:

Remember in this section of

Proverbs, we are not looking at.

148

:

Uh, large thematic sections,

but more the individual.

149

:

Um,

150

:

Proverbs that are, are, are not

necessarily related to what follows.

151

:

And so we kind of get this, uh,

this compilation of, of individual

152

:

ones scattered throughout here.

153

:

Uh, partner's 19 to desire

without knowledge is not good.

154

:

And whoever makes haste with his

feet misses his way in, in other

155

:

words, Uh, don't be impulsive.

156

:

Um, is, is basically

what he's saying there.

157

:

Uh, whoever makes haste with his feet

desire, without knowledge, you see

158

:

something you want it, you, you make, make

haste to go in and get that thing without

159

:

really stopping and thinking through.

160

:

Do I really want that?

161

:

Do I really need that?

162

:

Is that something that I should have?

163

:

Is that something that is good for me

or good for my family are good for.

164

:

Me spiritually and, and you don't

take that extra beat and we can be

165

:

so impulsive in, in our society.

166

:

We always hear.

167

:

Yeah.

168

:

It rewards it and it's so much easier

today than it was for Solomon, because on

169

:

our phones, we've got Amazon at the get.

170

:

At the apple store delivery.

171

:

Right.

172

:

And that's even long.

173

:

Sometimes it's like

really two hours hours.

174

:

Couldn't do it faster than that.

175

:

Right.

176

:

So, this is a good reminder to us

that that even when something seems

177

:

to be like, yeah, this makes sense.

178

:

I should do this.

179

:

I should pursue this.

180

:

I should get this.

181

:

It's worthwhile to wait, wait a minute.

182

:

Even to pray about this.

183

:

And, and sometimes we think, man,

can, should I really pray about this?

184

:

It seems so simple.

185

:

Should I pray about

getting this new, whatever?

186

:

Should I pray about trading in my old

phone and in upgrading to a new phone?

187

:

Yeah, you should.

188

:

You should pray and say, God, I examine

the motives of my heart or my motives,

189

:

correct in this are there right in this.

190

:

Do I need to.

191

:

To stop on this.

192

:

Is this something, could I

redirect this money somewhere

193

:

else that you would have me do?

194

:

Um, it's, it's just, it's

helpful for us to pray and we

195

:

can pray about the small things.

196

:

It's one of the blessings that we have in

the open throne, in access to the throne

197

:

that, that we have because of Christ.

198

:

Yeah, versus five and nine boats

speak about the false witness.

199

:

And, uh, the first one says a false

witness will not go on punished.

200

:

Verse nine says a false

witness will not go and punish.

201

:

So they both start with the same thing.

202

:

Verse five ends with, and he who

breathes out lies will not escape.

203

:

Verse nine says he who breathes out lies.

204

:

parish.

205

:

So both work together to form

this idea that the false witness

206

:

is under the judgment of God.

207

:

There's no such thing.

208

:

As someone who ultimately succeeds

in their lives, God will expose them.

209

:

God will bring them to light.

210

:

And so what a good reminder for

us then to be the kind of people

211

:

who are not allowing sin to too.

212

:

To, to kind of, I don't know, find a home

in our hearts where we hide and conceal

213

:

scripture calls us to be people of truth.

214

:

Jesus said that his way is

one of truth, John 14, right?

215

:

He talks about being the

way, the truth and the life.

216

:

And therefore Christians had

to be characterized for this.

217

:

And it's not just because of that, but

just the way that God has designed the

218

:

world lies are going to have their place.

219

:

Of judgment and therefore we

should be the kind of people

220

:

who live with a clean slate.

221

:

People who live under truth,

not trying to hide things, not

222

:

trying to conceal or deceive.

223

:

Let this be a good reminder that those

who lie, aren't going to escape with that.

224

:

And it's such a better place to be

to when we lie in and feel like,

225

:

is this going to be found out?

226

:

Am I going to be found out?

227

:

Like that's, that's such a miserable.

228

:

Place to, to, to have to live.

229

:

Yeah.

230

:

There's another verse coming up soon

that I love that speaks just like that.

231

:

You know, you're always looking over

your shoulder, always wondering, am I.

232

:

I'm going to be found out.

233

:

Somebody's going to catch me.

234

:

It's better to live in truth.

235

:

Right?

236

:

Right.

237

:

How about verse 11?

238

:

We've talked about this,

but just a reminder.

239

:

Good sense.

240

:

Makes one slow to anger and it's his

glory to overlook an offense, man.

241

:

The second part is specially I

think there are so many times where.

242

:

We're where we can stop for a

second and say, man, Do I really

243

:

need to get upset about this.

244

:

Do I really need to lash out about this?

245

:

Do I really need to talk to

this person even about this?

246

:

Or is this something I can just let go?

247

:

Uh, th that that's such a good thing.

248

:

And that's why it's wise.

249

:

Like I talked about with the

impulsiveness, with our decision-making

250

:

materialistically, sometimes we're

impulsive emotionally and in our

251

:

anger can, can be that way as well.

252

:

And so Solomon here is saying, Hey,

don't be impulsive with your anger.

253

:

Don't just immediately lash out,

but Hey, maybe it's wise to.

254

:

Stop for a second and think

maybe I can let this go.

255

:

Maybe I can cover, cover this over.

256

:

Maybe, maybe I can overlook this.

257

:

I think we we've talked about this

in the past, on the podcast, but.

258

:

That, that concept of righteous

indignation or righteous anger

259

:

and how we can know whether or not

we're there or, or not in one good

260

:

barometer is, is your offense.

261

:

Uh, more about you or is it more

about God and his character?

262

:

Is, is your concern more

about the fact that you want

263

:

this person to repent to you?

264

:

Or is it your concern that this

person has sinned against God?

265

:

And you desire that they repent

so that they could be made right

266

:

in their relationship with God.

267

:

Um, that's a good

barometer for us to know.

268

:

When can I let something go or when

do I need to bring something up?

269

:

That's good.

270

:

I've got one for somewhere near the end.

271

:

If you had anything between.

272

:

Uh, I got one.

273

:

So I first 27 is where I was going to go.

274

:

Anything before that.

275

:

Yeah, verse 17, I think is interesting.

276

:

Whoever.

277

:

He's generous to the

poor lends to the Lord.

278

:

Um, that that's always been one that's

stood out to me that, that we, when we

279

:

are generous in an inappropriate way, I

think we have to be wise in this because

280

:

there are ways that are unhelpful.

281

:

Um, that all of us are probably

immediately rushing to about the

282

:

panhandler or this, then what if he

goes and buys more alcohol or whatever?

283

:

But just in general, being somebody

who's generous towards the needy.

284

:

Which could be another way of putting this

is a way to, to put the Lord in your debt.

285

:

Um, not in, in a true sense because

the loader owns a cattle on a thousand

286

:

Hills and he owns even what you're

being generous with, but it means

287

:

that you're going to be in a good

position when it comes to the Lord.

288

:

The Lord's going to bless you and

reward you for that generosity.

289

:

So just something to,

to bear in mind there.

290

:

And since we're in that area,

verse 18, discipline, your son

291

:

for there is hope, do not set your

heart and putting him to death.

292

:

The opposite of disciplining

your son is not indulgence.

293

:

The opposite of disciplining.

294

:

Your son is death.

295

:

That's the idea here, which is

a very powerful way of putting

296

:

this scripture is very clear.

297

:

God wants us to discipline in the

same way that he disciplines us.

298

:

Hebrews chapter 13 tells us

this Proverbs chapter three

299

:

says this that's actually where.

300

:

Hebrews 13 is getting

it keepers 12, rather.

301

:

So make sure that you are

disciplining your children.

302

:

Apart from your discipline.

303

:

There is a, there is no hope,

essentially, because if you

304

:

discipline them, there is hope.

305

:

No discipline, no hope, no

discipline equals death.

306

:

Verse 27, you said.

307

:

Yeah, verse 27 sees to hear

instruction my son, and you will

308

:

stray from the words of truth.

309

:

I found this an important.

310

:

Because what it tells me is

that the posture of a Christian.

311

:

Foster of a believer.

312

:

Is to have a posture of learning,

growing for the rest of your

313

:

life and the rest of your days.

314

:

In fact, I would wager that.

315

:

Your eternal days are going to

be spent learning and growing.

316

:

You'll never reach the end of

your capacity because you'll

317

:

always have more to learn.

318

:

God alone is infinite.

319

:

We are not.

320

:

And therefore, while we begin

learning, all of us have a beginning.

321

:

None of us will have an end.

322

:

Uh, assuming that you're

in, in heaven with Christ.

323

:

You'll always be able to explore

the furthest reaches of who he

324

:

is, and you'll never reach the

end because God is infinite.

325

:

Therefore sees to hear instruction and you

will stray from the words of knowledge.

326

:

But if you continue to hear instruction,

you will continue to grow and

327

:

understand the words of knowledge.

328

:

I think that should encourage you.

329

:

That does encourage us for sure.

330

:

Uh, chapter 20 verse one, wine is a

mocker strong drink is a brawler and

331

:

whoever's led astray by does not wise it.

332

:

In other words, don't get drunk.

333

:

There you go.

334

:

And there's an old Testament

prohibition against drunkenness.

335

:

A wine is a mocker

strong drink, a brawler.

336

:

And that that's interesting.

337

:

I think we can.

338

:

Uh, all picture the, the drunkard who

has made himself a mockery and has

339

:

gotten into fights and been a brawler.

340

:

You think of the bar scenes in movies,

TV shows everything else like that.

341

:

Uh, and so here it traces itself

all the way back to Solomon.

342

:

And even before that, but he's

saying, Hey, just be careful.

343

:

Strong drink is, is not good.

344

:

If it's abused.

345

:

Um, and so the admonition

here not to get drunk.

346

:

You know, it's funny.

347

:

Cause I, the person I immediately think

of is as a character it's Homer Simpson.

348

:

It's.

349

:

Yeah.

350

:

I was raised seeing the show.

351

:

I never got to watch it because

my parents kept me from that.

352

:

But I always, you know, he knew

he was, he was the town drunk,

353

:

uh, along with his other friend.

354

:

What's his face Barney rubble.

355

:

Yeah.

356

:

Isn't that the Flintstones?

357

:

Yup.

358

:

Barney is the guy's name.

359

:

That's all.

360

:

That's all I know.

361

:

Not your friend.

362

:

That's the Flintstones.

363

:

Okay.

364

:

We've got to be real for a second.

365

:

Like wait a minute.

366

:

Maybe I got my cartoons wrong.

367

:

Yeah, I think of that.

368

:

And I think that that's

probably an unhelpful image

369

:

because people laugh at that.

370

:

It becomes a joke and like, As opposed to

that's a warning, that's a warning about

371

:

the kind of person I don't want to be.

372

:

And yet.

373

:

I think, I think there's something

about laughing at a sinful tendency

374

:

that lowers our own defenses

against its inclusion in our lives.

375

:

Because if it's a laughing matter,

then it's not a serious matter.

376

:

And if it's not a serious matter,

then it's, what's the big deal.

377

:

If I have a couple of drinks and I get

a little intoxicated, so I'd be aware.

378

:

Of the fact that all of the media

that you take in, whether it's a

379

:

Simpsons or something else is going

to influence the way that you see

380

:

sin, especially for laughing at it.

381

:

Be aware of what you laugh at,

because it probably will lower

382

:

your sin defenses against it.

383

:

Yeah.

384

:

Yeah, we talked about that

not long ago in, in one of our

385

:

sermons, on being discerning

about our entertainment choices.

386

:

That's right.

387

:

Part of the reasons

why they remember that.

388

:

Yeah, verse 13.

389

:

Uh, love not sleep less.

390

:

You come to poverty.

391

:

Okay.

392

:

So let's talk about that for a second.

393

:

It's summer vacation.

394

:

I know a lot of our students are loving.

395

:

Sleep right now.

396

:

Uh, is that a bad thing?

397

:

Pastor, rod, what are your thoughts?

398

:

Yes.

399

:

And no, I think there is a,

it's a Ecclesiastes three.

400

:

There's a, there's a S

there's a time for everything.

401

:

There's a scene asleep.

402

:

There's a time of sleep.

403

:

And in fact, it comes

out every day, every day.

404

:

There's a time of sleep and I

think good sleep is good for you.

405

:

So I'm all in favor of good

sleep because it's a, it's a

406

:

way of showcasing your faith.

407

:

In fact, Um, the, the Lord gives

to his beloved rest and sleep.

408

:

So it's a good and godly thing to sleep,

but there is such a thing as sleeping

409

:

too much oversleeping over resting.

410

:

And of course, when we're doing that,

you're entering into a season of

411

:

laziness or to a place of laziness.

412

:

And that's the thing that

God's warning against.

413

:

So it's not about sleeping so

much as it is about being lazy.

414

:

That's the, that's the tendency

that we have, and that's what

415

:

we need to be on guard against.

416

:

Yeah.

417

:

Uh, yeah, you're right.

418

:

MacArthur preached a sermon

a while back on sleep.

419

:

And that whole idea that, that when

we sleep, we are trusting the Lord.

420

:

No, sir, you sustain our bodies.

421

:

And we need that.

422

:

He runs the universe.

423

:

He alone does.

424

:

Um, so unless you're Al Mohler, you.

425

:

You got to get the sleeping.

426

:

Yeah.

427

:

And even he sleeps like

one or two hours a night.

428

:

At least one or two hours, I

mean, maybe three on, on Sundays

429

:

when he's really pushing it.

430

:

Three and a half.

431

:

Yeah.

432

:

Yeah.

433

:

Uh, verse 19, man, verse 19 is important.

434

:

Choose your friends wisely.

435

:

Whoever goes about slandering

reveal secrets, therefore do not

436

:

associate with a simple babbler.

437

:

Uh, that that's important.

438

:

And you know, parents I'll

speak to you on this one.

439

:

I, I think sometimes we fall into

this mindset of, Hey, my kid needs

440

:

to be friends with everybody.

441

:

No, they don't.

442

:

Um, What we've told our

kids is you should be kind.

443

:

You should be nice to everyone, but you

don't have to be friends with everyone.

444

:

You need to be careful about the friends

that you surround yourself with and be

445

:

careful about those people that are close

to you because you don't want to make

446

:

foolish choices with regards to that.

447

:

And if somebody the old saying right,

fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice.

448

:

Shame on you.

449

:

Yep.

450

:

Um, I like the Bush version

better, but that one's good too.

451

:

W what's that one?

452

:

Uh, full me once.

453

:

Shame on you.

454

:

Uh, for me twice.

455

:

Uh, you could have told me again.

456

:

That is good.

457

:

Yeah.

458

:

Something like that.

459

:

Yeah.

460

:

But you should learn and you

should be watching and go, okay.

461

:

Yeah, I'm going to be kind and nice

to that person, but I'm not going

462

:

to bring the, you know, what, as

far as our friendship goes, we're

463

:

going to stay just acquaintances

and we're going to leave it there.

464

:

We don't need to go any further than that.

465

:

So.

466

:

Uh, be careful about who you

bring into your inner circle.

467

:

Yeah, that's a complicated

one, but that's that's wise.

468

:

I like that.

469

:

Um, Here's one verse 24.

470

:

And hopefully I'm not skipping

anything you want here, but verse 24.

471

:

A man steps are from the Lord.

472

:

How then command understand his way.

473

:

Now, this is a fun one, because

first of all, you see that God

474

:

sovereignly, ordains, all your steps.

475

:

Amen steps are from the Lord.

476

:

When I take a left step versus

a right step, God knows it,

477

:

and God has determined it.

478

:

Um, and yet my experience is that

I'm choosing those steps and I

479

:

think that's a real influence.

480

:

Right?

481

:

We talked about this.

482

:

But the second part is

the fascinating part.

483

:

How then can a man understand his way?

484

:

It's almost like saying the heart is

deep waters who can understand that.

485

:

In fact, verse five, the

purpose of a man's heart purpose

486

:

in a man's heart, rather.

487

:

Is like deep water, but a man of

understanding will draw it out.

488

:

That is to say that sometimes are harder.

489

:

So our hearts are deep and mysterious.

490

:

And the things that we do, we

may not even fully understand.

491

:

I don't know why I said that,

even though it was in my heart.

492

:

I don't know why I did that,

even though it was in my heart.

493

:

God alone really understands the

inner workings of the human heart.

494

:

Not to say a good counselor, couldn't

really help us draw those things out,

495

:

which again is what verse five says.

496

:

But just, I think that should give you a

sense of awe and humility that God alone

497

:

knows who you are through and through.

498

:

And he's also determined your steps.

499

:

First 29.

500

:

Here's one for, uh, for us old guys, the

glory of young men is their strength.

501

:

But the splendor of old

men is their gray hair.

502

:

I want both.

503

:

Thank you very much.

504

:

Well, okay.

505

:

Fair enough, but, uh, yeah.

506

:

The, uh, just a reminder, they're

young guys listening to this,

507

:

if, uh, especially those of you

who might live in my household.

508

:

You know what splendor of old men is?

509

:

Their gray hair.

510

:

There you go.

511

:

Well, here, here's something interesting

in this particular time period, um, old

512

:

age was seen like an accomplishment.

513

:

It wasn't just like, oh,

you took it for granted.

514

:

Like today, most people can

stay alive for 70 years.

515

:

77, I think is the average

life span of most people.

516

:

This is a, this is an achievement.

517

:

And the way that someone

reaches old age, according to

518

:

scripture is by a righteous life.

519

:

And.

520

:

So by and large, when someone got

there, it's because they were living

521

:

a life that was pleasing to God, at

least that's the thinking behind it.

522

:

That's what's behind the Proverbs.

523

:

So.

524

:

Notice here that righteousness is what

allows for someone to gain gray hairs.

525

:

At least that's the thought here.

526

:

And I think the parallel for us today

who live in a culture of Western

527

:

medicine and, you know, supplements

for this and medications for that.

528

:

I think what's behind.

529

:

This is that wisdom is going to

prevent us from making stupid

530

:

decisions and thus consequently

shorting shortening our lives.

531

:

I think that's the,

that's the catch for us.

532

:

And that's the one that should

really help us to appreciate the

533

:

fact that your, it goes after a year.

534

:

I mean, I don't know about you, bro.

535

:

But I felt like there was times

when I celebrated some birthdays

536

:

and I'm like, man, I can't

believe how fast time is going.

537

:

I.

538

:

It's too.

539

:

It's too much.

540

:

I wish I was younger.

541

:

I wish I made these better

decisions when I was younger.

542

:

But time is a gift.

543

:

And we should respect it.

544

:

We should appreciate it and recognize

that the longer we live, the more

545

:

ideally we're growing close to the Lord.

546

:

And if that's the case,

You're not wasting your time.

547

:

You're making progress.

548

:

Yeah, that's a good word.

549

:

Good word, Proverbs 21, verse one,

the King's heart is a stream of

550

:

water in the hand of the Lord.

551

:

He turns it wherever he will.

552

:

Uh, in other words, it's the

loader sovereign over rulers.

553

:

Doctor, we're talking

about that a little bit.

554

:

Uh, even today in, uh, in church,

just this, this mindset that

555

:

God's plan cannot be stopped.

556

:

Uh, no matter what happens.

557

:

And you think back to the fact that he.

558

:

Chose to use Babylon.

559

:

When you think of, of Habakkuk and

the opening of Habakkuk that God

560

:

said to him, and he used Babylon.

561

:

I'm going to bring Nebuchadnezzar and

he's going to do my bidding or later

562

:

on when he calls Cyrus his servant.

563

:

And even just in the book of

Daniel, when Daniel in chapter two,

564

:

acknowledges and worships God, after

receiving the interpretation of

565

:

the dream, it says you are the one

who sets up Kings and removes them.

566

:

And here you see in Proverbs chapter

21, verse one, the King's heart is a

567

:

stream of water in the hand of the Lord.

568

:

He turns it wherever he will.

569

:

And that's something that's

so good for us to remember.

570

:

Uh, especially in a political climate

that we may not really love right now.

571

:

Uh, that, that, that the

heart of the president in our

572

:

vernacular is in the hand of God.

573

:

And he turns it wherever he will.

574

:

And he's really about

accomplishing his sovereign plan.

575

:

And that is not something that.

576

:

Uh, really is ours to fully understand.

577

:

We have to exercise faith.

578

:

We walk by faith, not by sight,

but we serve a God who does see the

579

:

beginning from the end and has ordained

the beginning from the end and is

580

:

working all things in accordance

with the counsel of his will.

581

:

And so that's a comforting thought for

us, including the bad decisions, even

582

:

the bad decisions, the sinful decisions.

583

:

Yeah.

584

:

The wicked policies that are

enacted and erected in R and R land.

585

:

That's hard to wrap your mind around it

is, but, and, and again, And I assume

586

:

you've already been to church and heard

this otherwise, if not, then, then

587

:

you're hearing it before we get there.

588

:

Acts chapter four.

589

:

When, when there Peter

saying, Hey, you know what?

590

:

In that city we're gathered against

the Lord and his anointed, Harriet

591

:

and Pasha, pilot and everything else.

592

:

And then it says to do whatever your hand.

593

:

I had ordain to take place.

594

:

So he's literally talking there about

all of the conspiracy that we're getting

595

:

to in John's gospel here in all of the,

the, the, uh, the behind the scenes stuff

596

:

to set up all of the sin that took place

to betray Jesus, all of the sin that

597

:

took place to arrest him, to falsely

accuse him to lie about what he had done.

598

:

To condemn him to death, the sin

of crucifying, an innocent man

599

:

of killing the son of God, all of

that ordained, according to the

600

:

plan of God that God ordained that

all of that should take place.

601

:

And so there, we see God ordained sin

to bring about the very crucifixion,

602

:

which is the hope and the remedy of sin.

603

:

And so, yeah, it is difficult

to wrap our minds around that.

604

:

And yet it's not without precedent.

605

:

When we look back to the very thing

that is the remedy and hope that all

606

:

of us have, if God is not ordaining

sin, then Christ doesn't die.

607

:

Right.

608

:

And we're left in a big.

609

:

Pit of mess.

610

:

Right.

611

:

And I guess the, the challenge for

us is to recognize that God uses sin.

612

:

Sinlessly God is in no way guilty.

613

:

When he ordained sin.

614

:

And honestly, I don't, I don't know

how to put those pieces together.

615

:

I know that they're both true, but

the way that I go from ABC to D.

616

:

I don't know.

617

:

Yeah, flabbergasted.

618

:

I don't know how to say that, except

to say that that's what scripture

619

:

says and that's what we affirm.

620

:

And you should too.

621

:

And that's the comfort in all of this when

God ordains the ends from the beginnings,

622

:

that includes the dark places in between

the valleys between the mountains.

623

:

And that's the kind of

trust that we have in him.

624

:

He's doing all things according

to the, his good purposes

625

:

of the counsel of his will.

626

:

And ultimately, and this is

the good part of this it's for

627

:

your good and for his glory.

628

:

And that's, that's our hope in this.

629

:

Yeah.

630

:

I think it was Piper who said it

and I, it was helpful at least

631

:

a little bit of a helpful peg

to hold onto with this concept.

632

:

As he said.

633

:

God never makes anyone

sin against their will.

634

:

Uh, when we sin, we sin willfully,

we desire that and we do it now.

635

:

He ordains that to take place,

but it's not like he is taking

636

:

someone that otherwise wouldn't sin.

637

:

And ordaining that they should sin, right?

638

:

Uh, it is, it is part of our

fallen nature to do that.

639

:

It is our default and God is ordaining.

640

:

Those actions, those decisions.

641

:

In accordance with his will, which, which

doesn't solve the whole thing, but it

642

:

at least is, is a little bit cleaner.

643

:

It goes to something to hold onto you.

644

:

Totally.

645

:

And it goes back to what we were saying.

646

:

Every decision that we

make is a real decision.

647

:

It's a true decision, right.

648

:

Even if it is an ordained

decision and again, how those

649

:

things work, not entirely sure.

650

:

Well, let's jump to another,

another passengers we loved.

651

:

That was a good one.

652

:

We got us.

653

:

Got us riled up on that one.

654

:

Yep.

655

:

Um, here's one verse three.

656

:

Uh, we have kind of a modern proverb,

which is to say it's better to ask for

657

:

forgiveness than permission, right?

658

:

That's something that we say.

659

:

Let's just do the thing and then if we

need to apologize for it later, so be it.

660

:

Now verse three says something

similar, except not at all.

661

:

To do righteousness and justice is more

acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

662

:

In other words, it's better not to sin

than it is to send an ask for forgiveness.

663

:

So it's better for you not to sin.

664

:

Sometimes as Christians, we can so easily

just say, Hey, here's, here's my card.

665

:

Here's my ACE of spades.

666

:

Jesus' blood forgives me.

667

:

I confess I sinned against that person.

668

:

Lord, please forgive me.

669

:

Thank you very much.

670

:

I receive it.

671

:

Uh, and that kind of low view of

Christ sacrifice in his atoning

672

:

work can often callous us to the

seriousness and the weight of our sin.

673

:

It better not to sin.

674

:

And some people would say, well, I don't

want to be a Pharisee and just buckle down

675

:

and do it because they have to, as opposed

to doing it from a heart of love and

676

:

faith and et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

677

:

And I think those are not

mutually exclusive categories.

678

:

Sometimes we obey out of duty.

679

:

But that duty is from faith.

680

:

I, out of a posture of

saying, I trust what God says.

681

:

And even though I don't feel like

it, I'm going to do what God says,

682

:

because I know that's the right thing.

683

:

And he has my best interest at heart.

684

:

So I'm going to do it.

685

:

It's better not to sin against

him than to say, Lord, I need to

686

:

ask for forgiveness because I.

687

:

I sand when I punched

pastor PJ, I got mad at him.

688

:

Please forgive me.

689

:

Now he's on the floor unconscious.

690

:

I don't want to do that.

691

:

I'd rather not sin.

692

:

And it's a good thing.

693

:

Not to sin.

694

:

That's a great thing.

695

:

In that context, not to sin.

696

:

Yeah.

697

:

Verse 15.

698

:

When justice is done, it's a joy to the

righteous, but terror to the evildoers.

699

:

And so that's a, another one kind of

along the lines, we talked about it with

700

:

lying and not having to worry about that.

701

:

If you are doing what is right, then you

can say, yeah, I want justice to be done

702

:

because you don't have anything to fear.

703

:

But it's a terror.

704

:

The concept of justice is a terror.

705

:

It's something that, that should instill

fear in those that have done wrong.

706

:

That they should think, okay.

707

:

When is the shoe gonna drop,

what am I going to be called

708

:

to account on these things?

709

:

And so, uh, Solomon there says for, for

you, if, if you don't want to have to

710

:

fear that then, then live righteously.

711

:

If you live righteously, you have

nothing to fear in that regard.

712

:

So wise, so simple and yet, so wise,

uh, verse 17, whoever loves pleasure.

713

:

We'll be a poor man.

714

:

He who loves wine and

oil will not be rich.

715

:

And I'm also going to have

you pair that with verse 20.

716

:

Precious treasure and oil are

in a wise man's dwellings,

717

:

but a foolish man devours it.

718

:

So there is a way to care for the

things that God has given you.

719

:

Such that you don't love him so

much that you squander all the

720

:

good things that it gives you.

721

:

In fact, wisdom D D demands

that you enjoy the good things.

722

:

God gives you without squandering it.

723

:

Now, whoever loves pleasure.

724

:

So it's not a bad thing to enjoy it,

to appreciate it, to celebrate God

725

:

for it, but to love it to idolize,

it means that you will overspend.

726

:

You will overindulge and consequently

that's where the bad things happen.

727

:

Precious oil and treasure and a

wise man's I don't devalue resources

728

:

that God gives you save some.

729

:

Hey verse 19, and then

back up to verse nine.

730

:

I think we need to address this

for our female listenership here.

731

:

Okay.

732

:

So first nine, it's better to live

in the corner of a housetop than in a

733

:

house shared with a quarrelsome wife.

734

:

Verse 19, it's better to live

in a desert land than with a

735

:

course alum and fretful woman.

736

:

Um,

737

:

The obvious is there's some things

to be said regarding the concept of,

738

:

I think we see biblical principles

of biblical submission here.

739

:

Uh, and the concepts of a woman

submitting to her husband as unto

740

:

the Lord and in how all that plays

out in Ephesians chapter five.

741

:

Uh, and so there, there are

principles there for sure.

742

:

I think the other thing too is, is

this is a challenge to the men to say,

743

:

Hey, you know, manage your household.

744

:

Well, strive to have a peaceful home.

745

:

That this, this does go two ways here.

746

:

And so I think that, that if, if

I'm sitting here going okay, How

747

:

do I not have a quarrelsome wife?

748

:

Well, yeah, maybe it's it's on her,

but then again, I need to also.

749

:

Suspect and inspect myself and

say, am I doing something that's

750

:

provoking her towards that?

751

:

That's not doing something right.

752

:

And we've talked about this recently

with communication and even how we

753

:

have the ability to, to dissolve an

argument before an argument breaks out.

754

:

If, if we will overlook an offense or

how we choose to communicate with each

755

:

other, like Proverbs 18 talked about

that, we talked about in the last episode.

756

:

So, this is not just about the ladies.

757

:

In other words, men, this is about us too.

758

:

And making sure that we are not creating

an environment where we are feeding into

759

:

quarrels and fights with our spouse.

760

:

Yeah, there's so much good to say there.

761

:

I mean, it kind of relates back to what

you were saying about choosing a spouse.

762

:

She's going to make, you know,

choosing the right person.

763

:

Uh, that goes both ways.

764

:

Men and women don't expect them to be

entirely different than the person that

765

:

you married, even though we're looking

at the trajectory of their lives.

766

:

That's really good.

767

:

Um, I appreciated it, man.

768

:

There's so much here that I want

to, I want to point out, but let

769

:

me just, uh, I'll go to this one.

770

:

Uh, I'm going to go to verse 30.

771

:

Okay.

772

:

No wisdom, no understanding, no

counsel can avail against the Lord.

773

:

I take great comfort in that, because

that tells me when I trust him,

774

:

no, one's going to win against God.

775

:

Yep.

776

:

Like.

777

:

No, no, one's going to say,

ah, I out smarted the Lord.

778

:

Right.

779

:

Hallway is under my control.

780

:

No, one's going to do that.

781

:

Godwin's period.

782

:

End of story.

783

:

Even if in the moment what I'm

experiencing is something that

784

:

looks like it's the contrary,

but I know the fact that Jesus.

785

:

Uh, that, that God uses all

things, including Jesus life,

786

:

where it looked like he lost.

787

:

There was a moment where

his disciples scattered.

788

:

There was a moment when it looked

like the Romans were going to

789

:

succeed in taming, his followership

and taming his leadership.

790

:

It looked like all, all had been lost

and yet God created the coolest, best

791

:

upset in all of human history showcasing.

792

:

He's got it all under control.

793

:

And that's where I take verse 30, man.

794

:

No wisdom, no understanding.

795

:

No counsel can avail against the Lord.

796

:

He's got it under control.

797

:

Yeah.

798

:

In fact, if you're at church this morning,

we're talking about that exact same thing.

799

:

Wow.

800

:

John chapter 11, verse 50, nor do

you understand this is Caiaphas the

801

:

high priest at the time, nor do you

understand that it's better for you.

802

:

That one man should die for the people.

803

:

Not that the whole nation should perish.

804

:

So he said that.

805

:

Meaning one thing, right then verse

51, John gives us the commentary.

806

:

He says he did not say this of

his own accord, but being high

807

:

priest that year, he prophesied.

808

:

That Jesus would die for the nation

and not only for the nation, but

809

:

also to gather into one the children

of God who are scattered abroad.

810

:

So Kaifas thinks, Hey, you guys are afraid

that everybody's going to go after Jesus.

811

:

And, and we're all done now.

812

:

And the Romans are going to come in

and destroy the temple and kick us out.

813

:

But you know what, here's the solution.

814

:

Let's just kill them.

815

:

And they think they're.

816

:

They're undermining God's

plan and cutting him out.

817

:

And he's, he's done this Jesus

character is going to be gone.

818

:

Really.

819

:

They're playing exactly right into

the plan of God the whole time.

820

:

Credible.

821

:

Yep.

822

:

Yup.

823

:

So, Hey, keep, bring your Bibles

and join us again tomorrow.

824

:

For another episode of

the daily Bible podcast.

825

:

We'll see you then.

826

:

Bye.
