Lucas:

This episode of Making a Monster is

Lucas:

brought to you by the Book of Extinction.

Lucas:

Pre-order now at

Lucas:

magehandpress.com/extinction.

Megan Maricle:

At first it just looks

Megan Maricle:

like a room with a treasure chest in it.

Megan Maricle:

So it's more like, Hey look,

Megan Maricle:

there's cool treasure over there.

Megan Maricle:

You open the door, just

Megan Maricle:

step right into it.

Megan Maricle:

It's fine, it's fine.

Megan Maricle:

There's no trap at all.

Megan Maricle:

Cause you know, when they see the

Megan Maricle:

treasure chest, they're gonna expect

Megan Maricle:

ya know the treasure chest is either

Megan Maricle:

a mimic or it's trapped or something.

Megan Maricle:

They're not gonna expect that

Megan Maricle:

the ooze is filling the room and

Megan Maricle:

they just stepped into the ooze.

Megan Maricle:

Now you're inside of a, an ooze that has a

Megan Maricle:

shark that swims around and bites people!

Lucas:

Hello and welcome

Lucas:

back to Making a Monster.

Lucas:

I'm your host, Lucas Zellers,

Lucas:

author of Book of Extinction now

Lucas:

on pre-order and coming soon in

Lucas:

hardcover from Mage Hand Press.

Lucas:

I'm going to Gen Con again this year!

Lucas:

The best four days in gaming are in

Lucas:

Indianapolis from August 3rd through

Lucas:

sixth, and if you're coming to the

Lucas:

convention, I'd love to meet you.

Lucas:

Just stop by the Mage Hand

Lucas:

Press booth number 2563.

Lucas:

I'll probably be there.

Lucas:

In honor of my second year at the

Lucas:

Con, I wanted to share this episode

Lucas:

I recorded during Gen Con 2022, where

Lucas:

I was introduced to Megan Markle.

Megan Maricle:

Hi.

Megan Maricle:

I am Megan Maricle and I'm one

Megan Maricle:

of the editors at Kobold Press.

Megan Maricle:

I first came on board working

Megan Maricle:

on their Monster books,

Megan Maricle:

doing the editing for those.

Lucas:

We connected over the

Lucas:

Creature Codex, literally

Lucas:

I held a mic over the book.

Lucas:

Kobold Press has published three volumes

Lucas:

of the Creature Codex since 2013.

Lucas:

I asked Megan, which of her

Lucas:

monsters made her most proud.

Megan Maricle:

Well, I'm

Megan Maricle:

proud of all of them.

Megan Maricle:

I worked a lot.

Megan Maricle:

That's like asking a parent

Megan Maricle:

to choose their favorite

Megan Maricle:

child, like that is not fair.

Megan Maricle:

I mean, every parent has a favorite,

Megan Maricle:

but you can't actually ask them that.

Megan Maricle:

Like, goodness gracious.

Megan Maricle:

Um, well, let's see if we're looking at

Megan Maricle:

things that are kind of underrepresented,

Megan Maricle:

the Creature Codex has the giant Shark

Megan Maricle:

Bowl ooze, which is a lot of fun.

Megan Maricle:

I know this is like audio only, but

Megan Maricle:

you can at least see the picture.

Lucas:

I can.

Lucas:

If you don't know, oozes are one

Lucas:

of 13 creature types in the fifth

Lucas:

edition Monster manual, which

Lucas:

describes them as gelatinous creatures

Lucas:

that rarely have aff fixed shape.

Lucas:

They're mostly subterranean dwelling

Lucas:

in caves and dungeons, and feeding

Lucas:

on refuse carrying or creatures

Lucas:

unlucky enough to get in their way.

Lucas:

The most famous ooze, I would argue,

Lucas:

is the one that conforms its shape

Lucas:

to occupy the most volume possible.

Lucas:

In dungeons with rectangular

Lucas:

corridors, it assumes its most

Lucas:

recognizable form the gelatinous cube.

Lucas:

In sewers, it would become a

Lucas:

cylinder as it pushes through pipes.

Lucas:

However, it might also respond to

Lucas:

strange magic and form a kind of

Lucas:

aquarium for another large predator.

Lucas:

I asked Megan where oozes

Lucas:

generally fit in the structure

Lucas:

of a Dungeons and Dragons game.

Megan Maricle:

Well, a lot of people I

Megan Maricle:

know use oozes kind of as traps, right?

Megan Maricle:

Because oozes are not very

Megan Maricle:

intelligent creatures, generally.

Megan Maricle:

We do have one ooze that's kind of smart,

Megan Maricle:

but for the most part, yeah, they're

Megan Maricle:

meant to be this kind of force of nature.

Megan Maricle:

They're kind of like the garbage

Megan Maricle:

disposals of the dungeons and stuff

Megan Maricle:

like that, but they're usually in, in a

Megan Maricle:

kind of like trap oriented type thing.

Megan Maricle:

You're usually used them as

Megan Maricle:

a, Oh, this thing is here.

Megan Maricle:

you stumble into it or it falls from

Megan Maricle:

the ceiling, or something like that,

Megan Maricle:

because they're not the brightest

Megan Maricle:

and they're usually predators, but in

Megan Maricle:

that kind of slow walking towards you

Megan Maricle:

death, like, you know, Jason Vorhees

Megan Maricle:

or something, they're not, they're

Megan Maricle:

not like the cat that's gonna pounce

Megan Maricle:

around you from the corner, you know?

Megan Maricle:

So if I remember correctly, 2018

Megan Maricle:

was when this book came out.

Megan Maricle:

So please forgive my terrible memory,

Megan Maricle:

but I believe the Giant Sharks was

Megan Maricle:

actually something a backer submitted.

Megan Maricle:

And we're Kobold Press, we don't do a

Megan Maricle:

ton of goofy monsters, but we do like

Megan Maricle:

some fun ones occasionally, right?

Megan Maricle:

We have a "swol-bold,", so, We do like

Megan Maricle:

some, some goofy stuff occasionally, but

Megan Maricle:

yeah, so the giant shark bowl ooze just

Megan Maricle:

made the whole judge's panel chuckle.

Megan Maricle:

Uh, so they're like, All

Megan Maricle:

right, you made us all chuckle.

Megan Maricle:

Fine.

Megan Maricle:

You'll put it in the book.

Lucas:

Writing the mechanics for this

Lucas:

Monster followed exactly the template

Lucas:

you would expect Fusing two existing stat

Lucas:

blocks to create a symbiotic relationship.

Megan Maricle:

It has to have

Megan Maricle:

everything crunched up first,

Megan Maricle:

and that's what the shark is for.

Megan Maricle:

It does all the crunching.

Megan Maricle:

We've had some people make miniatures

Megan Maricle:

of it, so it's very impactful for

Megan Maricle:

some, if they make like fishbowls

Megan Maricle:

and they put like resin and stuff

Megan Maricle:

in it with the shark inside of it.

Megan Maricle:

, People are excellent.

Megan Maricle:

I, I love people.

Lucas:

What was the first

Lucas:

edition of D&D that you played?

Megan Maricle:

First

Megan Maricle:

edition that I played?

Megan Maricle:

I played second edition,

Megan Maricle:

Dungeons and Dragons.

Megan Maricle:

I played in 1994.

Megan Maricle:

I was, oh gosh, eight years old.

Megan Maricle:

And uh, my parents both played,

Megan Maricle:

my mom and my stepdad both played

Megan Maricle:

and they were big fans of D&D.

Megan Maricle:

They had a big group with

Megan Maricle:

their college friends.

Megan Maricle:

And, uh, I thought that it was just that

Megan Maricle:

boring, grown up game, you know, in the

Megan Maricle:

same way that like, when you're watching

Megan Maricle:

movies, you see like the dudes around

Megan Maricle:

the poker table, smoking and drinking

Megan Maricle:

and just playing poker, and you're like,

Megan Maricle:

Oh, that's the boring part of the movie.

Megan Maricle:

Right.

Megan Maricle:

Uh, and I was like, D&D just have

Megan Maricle:

boring things that my parents do.

Megan Maricle:

But then a book released that year, um,

Megan Maricle:

it was either 94 or 95 that it released.

Megan Maricle:

It was called Council of Wyrms.

Megan Maricle:

And my, yeah, my parents were like, Hey,

Megan Maricle:

because we move, we had moved further

Megan Maricle:

out in the country, so they were away

Megan Maricle:

from their friends and they're like,

Megan Maricle:

Okay, well let's get the kids to play.

Megan Maricle:

And we were both like, That's

Megan Maricle:

the boring, grown up thing that's

Megan Maricle:

like just as boring as poker.

Megan Maricle:

Why would do that?

Megan Maricle:

Um, and they were like, Well,

Megan Maricle:

you could play a baby dragon.

Megan Maricle:

And I was like, There's

Megan Maricle:

dragons in this game.

Megan Maricle:

Uh, so I've been playing

Megan Maricle:

ever since myself.

Megan Maricle:

So part of the reason I ask is that I

Megan Maricle:

have heard in older editions that there

Megan Maricle:

was a more adversarial relationship

Megan Maricle:

between Dungeon Master and player.

Megan Maricle:

Is that part of your experience

Megan Maricle:

and do you think that oozes are

Megan Maricle:

indicative of that in any way?

Megan Maricle:

I don't think that that is edition based.

Megan Maricle:

I actually think that's more of

Megan Maricle:

the age of the players based.

Megan Maricle:

Cause when I played as a kid,

Megan Maricle:

my parents were in college and

Megan Maricle:

they were playing with kids.

Megan Maricle:

So we never had an

Megan Maricle:

adversarial relationship.

Megan Maricle:

It was all about telling a fun story.

Megan Maricle:

Right.

Megan Maricle:

One of my first encounters in D&D

Megan Maricle:

was I was a dragon, polymorphed,

Megan Maricle:

attempting to go help a village.

Megan Maricle:

But I had to pretend that I didn't

Megan Maricle:

know anything about human customs.

Megan Maricle:

And that was the kind of fun we had.

Megan Maricle:

We never had an adversarial

Megan Maricle:

relationship or anything like that.

Megan Maricle:

It was all meant to just be what story

Megan Maricle:

we wanna tell, the fun we wanna have.

Megan Maricle:

But later, when I played in

Megan Maricle:

high school with my high school

Megan Maricle:

friends, it did become much more

Megan Maricle:

adversarial, much more us versus them.

Megan Maricle:

Let's try and like beat

Megan Maricle:

up whatever we can.

Megan Maricle:

And I think that's, and I think that's

Megan Maricle:

part of the growth of D&D, right?

Megan Maricle:

Like, I don't wanna say teenagers

Megan Maricle:

are more adversarial, right?

Megan Maricle:

But it's, competitive thing.

Megan Maricle:

You wanna, you know, be the best

Megan Maricle:

at something or you wanna do

Megan Maricle:

the most damage at something.

Megan Maricle:

You see it in video games and stuff

Megan Maricle:

too, when you've got like leaderboards

Megan Maricle:

and everything, it's no different.

Megan Maricle:

So I really just think it's kind of a life

Megan Maricle:

stage thing rather than an edition thing.

Megan Maricle:

The giant Shark Bowl ooze moves its

Megan Maricle:

whole genre of Monster away from

Megan Maricle:

a sort of gotcha style of running

Megan Maricle:

the game into a comedy piece.

Megan Maricle:

Yeah, cuz it's like the

Megan Maricle:

dungeon master gotcha.

Megan Maricle:

But then you're also like, I can't be mad.

Megan Maricle:

It's a shark inside of a news and

Megan Maricle:

the shark is eating me right now.

Megan Maricle:

Like I did literally just fall for that.

Megan Maricle:

Um, and I think that's kind of what

Megan Maricle:

we like to do with Kobold Press

Megan Maricle:

is a lot of our monsters is we

Megan Maricle:

like them to be fun and flavorful.

Megan Maricle:

So you can kind of like, so even the ones

Megan Maricle:

that aren't the goofy giant sharks, right?

Megan Maricle:

You can still see kind of the story of it.

Megan Maricle:

You can see the place that they fit

Megan Maricle:

in the world and they're just gonna

Megan Maricle:

be fun and challenging encounters.

Megan Maricle:

Right?

Lucas:

In just a minute, Megan

Lucas:

will give you her best advice

Lucas:

as an editor of Monster books on

Lucas:

Using Monsters Better in Your Game.

Lucas:

But first, let me say thank you

Lucas:

for listening to Making a Monster.

Lucas:

If you like what you've heard

Lucas:

and you wanna support the show,

Lucas:

please leave a rating or a review

Lucas:

on the podcast app of your choice.

Lucas:

Spotify recently introduced a five

Lucas:

star rating system to its interface.

Lucas:

You can find it on the podcast page

Lucas:

just under the show description.

Lucas:

It's a small thing, but it does

Lucas:

help new listeners discover the

Lucas:

show and really makes a difference

Lucas:

for me moving forward as a creator.

Lucas:

And if you really appreciate my

Lucas:

approach to Monster Design, you can

Lucas:

check out my book, Book of Extinction,

Lucas:

resurrecting Extinct Animals as Monsters

Lucas:

for your Fifth Edition Tabletop Game.

Lucas:

You can pre-order now and get the first

Lucas:

130 pages of it immediately when you

Lucas:

order at MageHandPress.com/extinction.

Lucas:

That's MageHandPress.com/extinction.

Lucas:

And lastly, if you're at Gen Con

Lucas:

this year, don't forget to visit.

Lucas:

I'll be at the Mage Hand

Lucas:

Press booth number 25 63.

Lucas:

See you there.

Lucas:

Now Megan, what's the number one

Lucas:

thing you want Dungeon Masters

Lucas:

to do to use monsters better?

Lucas:

I mean, I'm not the pioneer of this.

Lucas:

There's a guy who wrote a whole book

Lucas:

on it, but think like the Monster,

Lucas:

like what do the monsters think about,?

Lucas:

You know, cuz they're not

Lucas:

just bags of hip points.

Lucas:

They're not just teeth that's hungry.

Lucas:

Right.

Lucas:

You know?

Lucas:

Sure.

Lucas:

It might be a lion coming after you,

Lucas:

but it also might have not eaten in

Lucas:

a day or it might have cubs nearby.

Lucas:

Right.

Lucas:

You know, bears that attack people

Lucas:

don't just attack people randomly.

Lucas:

It's usually cuz there's cubs nearby.

Lucas:

Right.

Lucas:

And I think people forget that

Lucas:

with monsters cuz they see it

Lucas:

as just something big and scary.

Lucas:

So really just think about

Lucas:

what the monsters think.

Lucas:

And I, I know there's a gentleman

Lucas:

that wrote a book on it and I

Lucas:

cannot remember his name for

Lucas:

the life of me, uh, Keith Ahman.

Lucas:

Yes, Yes.

Lucas:

The monsters know what they're doing.

Lucas:

Right, Exactly.

Lucas:

It's, it's wonderful and it's

Lucas:

a great concept to think about.

Lucas:

Right.

Lucas:

Like, cuz the monsters do, they

Lucas:

are living, breathing creatures.

Lucas:

I mean, oozes are kind of, and

Lucas:

undead don't breathe, but yeah.

Lucas:

You understand what I mean?

Lucas:

You get it.

Lucas:

You get it.
