Evo Terra:

Podcasting pundents and journalists are busy

Evo Terra:

releasing speculations ahead of announcements from Apple Podcasts,

Evo Terra:

Spotify, and even Facebook.

Evo Terra:

But are those opinion pieces helping or hurting podcasts?

Evo Terra:

Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.

Evo Terra:

What should your reaction be to these upcoming changes from Apple

Evo Terra:

Podcasts, Spotify, and, very late to the audio party, Facebook?

Evo Terra:

May I suggest that you have no reaction?

Evo Terra:

As much fun as it is for me and others to speculate ahead of these

Evo Terra:

announcements, I'm really concerned that they're doing little beyond increasing

Evo Terra:

anxiety and stress amongst, well, you.

Evo Terra:

Now, that's an unfortunate side effect.

Evo Terra:

And honestly I hate the fact that my breathless enthusiasm, which I

Evo Terra:

get into quite a lot here, might negatively impact your mental health.

Evo Terra:

I don't like that.

Evo Terra:

Now, here's the reality though.

Evo Terra:

So I'm going to strip it all away for feeling anxious and worried about that.

Evo Terra:

Look, whatever these moves made by the big guys that are coming out today,

Evo Terra:

tomorrow, whenever, whatever they are, there probably isn't anything at all

Evo Terra:

for you to do immediately to better position yourself, to take care of them.

Evo Terra:

There isn't.

Evo Terra:

I'm sorry.

Evo Terra:

Well, I'm not sorry.

Evo Terra:

I'm happy.

Evo Terra:

I'm really happy that there's not anything you have to do to take

Evo Terra:

care of these things immediately.

Evo Terra:

That's just not how they work.

Evo Terra:

It's rumored and likely going to happen we've seen it in the

Evo Terra:

beta versions of these things.

Evo Terra:

For example, that Apple is going to be adding a frequency tag and displaying

Evo Terra:

that next to your podcast, my podcast, everyone's podcasts, so that when someone

Evo Terra:

comes into the Apple Podcasts ecosystem and is looking for shows and looking

Evo Terra:

for content they can grab when they get to the podcast, they'll have a little

Evo Terra:

frequency tag, probably daily, weekly.

Evo Terra:

Great.

Evo Terra:

And that's easy enough to do.

Evo Terra:

Simple math can determine, looking at the feed, how often episodes are released.

Evo Terra:

What label do we put on there?

Evo Terra:

But is it that easy?

Evo Terra:

I mean, what's happening to seasonal podcasts like mine?

Evo Terra:

First off, mine's four days a week.

Evo Terra:

Is that a tag, four days a week?

Evo Terra:

Or is it a daily or almost daily?

Evo Terra:

What happens when I go on break, which I'm going to do the month of June and,

Evo Terra:

for this year, that first bit of July because of travel, I'm taking off.

Evo Terra:

So what happens then?

Evo Terra:

What about shows that are truly serialized, not just seasons,

Evo Terra:

but serialized and done?

Evo Terra:

What's the release frequency of a podcast that was complete in twelve

Evo Terra:

episodes and they're all released?

Evo Terra:

You don't know, we don't know, no one knows.

Evo Terra:

And here's the thing, you don't care either.

Evo Terra:

This will be a determined thing.

Evo Terra:

It is not a tag you can go into your hosting company and set.

Evo Terra:

Remember when Apple, it was a big stink, what, two years ago now?

Evo Terra:

About hosts and guests, this new display section Apple Podcasts would have for

Evo Terra:

certain shows that would show the host and the guest and pictures of them.

Evo Terra:

Huge amounts of hand-ringing around that.

Evo Terra:

I might've been part of that.

Evo Terra:

We have no control over that.

Evo Terra:

There's no tagging for that.

Evo Terra:

That's something that Apple decides to do and then gets in touch with you, the

Evo Terra:

podcaster, if they want you to do that.

Evo Terra:

Nothing we can do.

Evo Terra:

Remember how bad our episode details looked inside of Spotify when Spotify

Evo Terra:

first started adding podcasts to them?

Evo Terra:

I mean, what were you going to do?

Evo Terra:

There was one giant block of text.

Evo Terra:

It didn't rip it, didn't respect any URLs you placed in, didn't do bullet points,

Evo Terra:

it just looked like garbage on Spotify.

Evo Terra:

Everyone was freaking out about it, but again, what are you going to do?

Evo Terra:

Hack together a totally different RSS feed and send that to Spotify?

Evo Terra:

Please.

Evo Terra:

Would have been a bad idea because now they've fixed that.

Evo Terra:

Again, without any real effort from your part.

Evo Terra:

Plenty of other podcasters are going, hang on.

Evo Terra:

That got them to make a move.

Evo Terra:

Facebook is speculated to announce some sort of a new discovery and

Evo Terra:

distribution service we're told, and that's in conjunction with Spotify.

Evo Terra:

Interesting.

Evo Terra:

Will this finally fix podcasting's discoverability problem?

Evo Terra:

Well, I'm not convinced podcasting has a discoverability problem, so I don't

Evo Terra:

think it was ever broken to be fixed.

Evo Terra:

So likely not.

Evo Terra:

It's probably going to be much more like a Clubhouse offering than

Evo Terra:

truly podcasting, even though all speculation talks about podcasting.

Evo Terra:

But remember, you didn't quit podcasting to start your Clubhouse rooms, did you?

Evo Terra:

I didn't think so.

Evo Terra:

So whatever Facebook announces today, whatever Apple announces

Evo Terra:

tomorrow, don't sweat it.

Evo Terra:

Whatever Amazon Music announces after that, cause you know

Evo Terra:

they're going to, don't sweat it.

Evo Terra:

You keep on keeping on producing the podcast content that you need to produce.

Evo Terra:

Sure, make sure your fundamentals are covered.

Evo Terra:

Yes, make sure you've claimed your profile on all of those platforms

Evo Terra:

and you can log in in the event they need some extra details from you.

Evo Terra:

But they probably don't.

Evo Terra:

Remember this, some shows in the various podcast directories, Apple, Spotify,

Evo Terra:

Amazon Music, some of those shows haven't been touched in over a decade.

Evo Terra:

They're still valid shows.

Evo Terra:

Haven't added a new episode in over a decade.

Evo Terra:

Again, still valid content.

Evo Terra:

The owner of that show hasn't gone into their hosting company and

Evo Terra:

done anything for over a decade.

Evo Terra:

And they're all still available.

Evo Terra:

They'll all play in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and everywhere

Evo Terra:

else because it's unlikely that any changes these guys make will

Evo Terra:

force you to make some drastic change to your show to stay active.

Evo Terra:

It hasn't happened yet.

Evo Terra:

And if it does, I promise we'll let you know.

Evo Terra:

So send this episode to one of your very anxious, podcasting friends and

Evo Terra:

tell them it's okay to just relax.

Evo Terra:

And if you love the content and the idea that I just told you,

Evo Terra:

you can sit back and relax.

Evo Terra:

We got this.

Evo Terra:

The world's not going to end.

Evo Terra:

Please go to buy me a coffee.com/eo, Tara.

Evo Terra:

And do that.

Evo Terra:

Buy me a virtual coffee.

Evo Terra:

All right, relax, chill out.

Evo Terra:

Don't kill yourself today.

Evo Terra:

Or tomorrow to find ways to listen to these announcements.

Evo Terra:

We'll let you know if there's anything major you need to do.

Evo Terra:

All right.

Evo Terra:

And I shall be back tomorrow with yet another podcast.
