"If you're thinking a thought that doesn't feel good, it's not true. How you feel is not determined by the experiences of your life, but by what you think about the experience."
"You have the right to establish for yourself a new belief, right here, right now, to make a new empowered decision about what reality will be, about who you are, about how things work—even in the midst of evidence to the contrary—because that evidence is old news."

If you were to ask me who the best modern day spiritual teacher is, the person who most clearly explains how reality works and how we create our own experience, my answer might surprise you. At the top of my list is Abraham Hicks. And maybe you've heard of her, maybe you haven't. Frankly, it's a little bit weird. It's this woman, Esther Hicks, who channels a collective consciousness named Abraham. But the material is some of the best on the planet when it comes to how to create your reality. She's become one of the most influential voices in the personal growth and manifestation space. The queen of Law of attraction. And her teachings on the law of attraction, on alignment and the emotional guidance system, have inspired millions. But a lot of my students tell me they have a hard time applying these teachings in real life. They understand concepts like getting into the vortex or reaching for a better feeling thought, but they can't seem to actually do it. And maybe you felt this way too. So in today's episode, I'm going to break down Abraham Hicks's core concepts and add my own suggestions to show you exactly how to start putting them into practice starting today. Because here's the truth. Millions of people have read the books, they've watched the workshops, they've tried to apply the emotional scale, and yet a lot of people struggle to integrate what they're teaching. They understand the concepts, but they can't seem to consistently live them. That's what we're going to solve today. I'm David Baer. I've spent the last decade transforming powerful spiritual principles into practical frameworks. And I built a $40 million business and a 2 million listener a month podcast breaking these concepts down for people just like you. And in this episode, I'm going to walk you through Abraham's core teachings and show you exactly how to apply them to go beyond self awareness or rewire your brain and re engineer your reality.
Welcome to a Changed Mind, a journey into the topics that matter to you most. From the neuroscience and spirituality of mindset and personal growth, to groundbreaking strategies for health, wealth and relationships, to open and honest conversations about pressing global issues such as the environment, censorship, corporate capture and democracy. Each and every episode reminds us of the certainty of the goodness of the future and provides the teachings, tools and timeless wisdom, inspiring you to create real, lasting change in your life and in the world. If you've been desiring a sanctuary for your spirit, a place to go to tune out the distraction, negativity and doom and gloom so that you can tap into the deep power, the vibrancy and the potential you have inside, you're in the right place.
Welcome to a changed mind. All right, guys. So one of the best teachers on creating a reality law of Attraction is Abraham. This woman, Esther Hicks, has been going around doing seminars for the last 40 years. She gets into a relaxed state, she sort of rolls her eyeballs back a little bit, and then all of a sudden, boom. Abraham takes over and she has these conversations and dialogues with audiences. If you haven't had a chance to check it out, I recommend you do. I mean, Abraham is just on point in terms of this conversation of Law of attraction. And so I want to talk to you about these five distinctions. They're really powerful distinctions. They're not always immediately clear. And I'm going to David explain them for you so that not only you can understand them, but you can actually apply them to your life. So distinction number one is getting into the vortex. So one of the central tenets of Abraham is the importance of getting into the vortex. It is a mental energetic space where your desires live. This thing called your inner being exists. And you have to be in alignment with this vortex to actually materialize what you want in your life. So she says the vortex is where everything that you've been asking for has already been gathered. Every time you know what you don't want, you launch a rocket of desire. And your this thing called your inner being becomes the vibrational equivalent of that desire and it holds it in the vortex. So it is a real place, vibrationally speaking, where all of your creations already exist. And when you are in the vortex, you are in alignment with all that you have become. So what are we talking about here? I like to translate Abraham's vortex to Neville Goddard's fourth dimension. So the vortex, it's this idea that, look, we all live in a third dimensional reality. We can see our reality, we can sense our reality. We've got these five senses, the sensory technology of the human being where we're interpreting vibration into a physical reality. You wake up in the morning and you wake up in your real room, going to your real job, interacting with real people. It is a material, physical reality that we experience on a day to day basis. But what Neville Goddard says is that there's also this fourth dimensional reality. He talks about it as a vibrational reality. It's a reality that's equally valid, but it hasn't yet manifest materialize into the physical world. And so our physical senses cannot detect them. But actually that's where everything that you ever wanted already exists. Right? You can Think of it like this. It's where your wishes are fulfilled already and they're waiting in a queue to manifest or materialize into your reality. It's this idea that creation is already finished. All the ideas, all the things, they've all been created and they're sitting in this field or this vortex, waiting to show up in your third dimensional material reality. So this isn't just exclusive to Neville Goddard and Abraham. The Hindus referred to this as the Akashic field. Great metaphysical teachers and New Age teachers refer to this as the etheric field. Right? It's a field of energy that contains everything that has ever existed from all time. Information, solutions, material things that you could ever want. I think in Star wars they're referring to it as the source. Abraham even calls it source energy. So Abraham says you can activate this field, meaning your vortex, with something that she calls a rocket of desire. So what is that? Well, what she says or what they say is that you shoot off a rocket of desire, meaning a communication signal for something when you experience what she calls contrast, or what we might call a problem. In other words, when you run into a problem, a solution gets immediately activated in this vortex or in this field. And my explanation for this would be that the moment you experience a problem, your nervous system unconsciously sends a flare or a signal to the field and the solution or the desire becomes active. There is some scripture that talks about this. It's like before you've even spoken, I have heard you before you have even asked. You know, I'm delivering it. It is on the way. So what Abraham says is that whenever we have a problem, we send off a rocket of desire into this vortex or field, which again is like the fourth dimension, the solution becomes activated or catalyzed, it starts making its way to us. Okay, what Abraham says is that the key to receiving the solution, for it to actually showing up in your third dimensional reality, either as a thought that you have or a hunch that you have, or a synchronicity or coincidence that shows up in your life, is to align yourself with what she describes as your inner being who's also in the vortex. So this vortex is just a party place. It's got all the stuff that you've ever wanted. There's this buddy of yours called your inner being that's over there. There's a lot going on in this vortex. So what Abraham is saying is that the part of you that actually understands how reality works, in other words, I would describe it as your higher self, the higher part of you that doesn't have fears, it doesn't have doubts, it's still residing with God or wherever we came from. It's in this vortex too. And so when you align with that part of you, when you start to think like that part of you and feel like that part of you and act like that part of you, meaning the part of you that already knows everything, exists because for all practical purposes, it does for this inner being who's hanging out with all your stuff, Then you align yourself with your inner being and you align yourself with the things that you want. And over some period of time, reality has no choice but to manifest the thing that you want. And while this may sound complicated, it's actually really quite simple and practical. Like if you don't have as much money as you want in your bank account, and that's a problem, you notice it. You feel the financial insecurity. But you also launch a rocket of desire for more money into the quantum field. And the field immediately starts responding through thoughts, through ideas, through rendezvous, and people who are making their way towards you to solve this problem that you have and to create the reality of financial abundance. But the key is to align your nervous system with it. So if you start to act as if you're a wealthy person, you'll have wealthy thoughts and you'll feel wealthy feelings and you'll take wealthy action. And that's very different because someone who's living in financial insecurity is going to have thoughts of scarcity and feel scarcity and take action that produces scarcity. But if you can actually align yourself with your inner being or the wealthy version of you in this example, and hold that, then with a hundred percent certainty over some period of time, you'd become wealthy. That just makes sense. Like for me, in my own experience, it's like when I decided I wanted to become sober, I had to start thinking like a sober person, feeling like a sober person, acting like a sober person. Do that long enough and you become sober. If you want to become an alcoholic, it's really easy. Think like an alcoholic, feel like an alcoholic, act like an alcoholic, and given enough time, you'll become an alcoholic. But that goes for anything in the world. If you want to become great at yoga, think like a yogi, feel like a yogi, act like a yogi, and given enough time, you'll be a yogi. So what Abraham is doing is they're giving us a look behind the curtain and they're saying, yes, all that's true on a practical level. But just know how reality works. There's a field, it's called a vortex, where all the thoughts and the ideas and the resources come from the quantum field. And when you align yourself and begin to think and feel like that person who already has it, like your inner being, then it will become your reality. Not really that far fetched when you think about it. Right. Abe uses this language of vortex and inner being to describe the field and the version of your future self that already has the thing that you desire. Distinction number two, your inner being. Let's unpack this inner being a little bit more. Because what Abe says is that your inner being is that larger, non physical part of you who remains focused in the vortex and who knows who you really are. So your inner being is always in vibrational alignment with your desires and with your source. And when you feel negative emotion, it means that the thoughts that you're thinking is not in harmony with the perspective of your inner being. And when you feel good, it means you're in alignment with that broader knowing. Okay, so there's this inner being. Let's talk about this. I like to think of the inner being, as I mentioned before, as your higher self. So the part of me that was before I incarnated here, right? That part of me that was before that existed, my soul before I incarnated into this individual, David bare body, the part of me that has the God or the universal perspective because it's outside of time and space. And so in that sense, my inner being or my higher self knows that everything is always working out. My inner being knows that life is working for me. You know, it's interesting because throughout our lives we experience problems or fears or failures. Something happens in the moment or oh my gosh, this is just such a crisis or chaos. But then we end up looking backwards and we realize, wow, that thing needed to happen in order for me to have the things that I cherish most today in order for me to become the person that I, you know, admire about myself. So I think of my inner being as already always knowing this idea that things are working out, as opposed to me in this body who worries about it on a daily basis and who has to have the experiences and look back in order to realize it. My inner being is my wise self. And so what Abraham says is that when you think a thought that doesn't feel good, that thought is out of alignment with the way your inner being would think be thinking about the situation. That you have this emotional guidance system that is telling you that what you're thinking Right now is not the opinion that your inner being has about the situation. Now, admittedly, this is a little bit confusing. But what Abe is saying is very similar to one of the primary principles that I teach, which is that if you're thinking a thought that doesn't feel good, it's not true. And what I mean by that is that how you feel is not determined by the experiences out there of your life. Is determined by what you think about the experience. So if someone can't make you angry, what activates anger inside of you is the meaning that you give an interaction with someone where you think to yourself, they shouldn't have said that to me. How dare they? They don't respect me. That's what's creating the anger inside of you. It's not the fact that somebody disagreed with you or yelled at you or cut you off on the highway. So the way you feel is determined by the meaning that you give an experience. And so your thoughts determine how you feel. And when you're thinking something that doesn't feel good, Abe would say it's not in alignment with the way your inner being sees the situation. I would say what that means is the thought that you're holding is not true. So what I mean is that you create your reality. I mean that anything is possible for you. And that you decide how your life is or is not going to be. And if you decide that money is hard to make, you'll be right because you create your own reality. If you decide that life is abundant and prosperous, then you'll be right, and that will be your reality. Henry Ford said something like, the man who thinks he can and the man who thinks he can are both right. And you have this inner compass, your nervous system and your emotions that will tell you if you're deciding something that isn't necessarily true, but you can create it anyway. So you feel suffering when you think something that's not actually true. You feel suffering when you think to yourself, I'm not good enough. Why? Because that's not true. You feel suffering when you say there's not enough time. You feel stress or overwhelm. Why? Because that's not true. Your nervous system is telling you that's not true. It would say your inner being doesn't agree with that. You experience, you know, anxiety or depression or overwhelm when you think, things will never work out for me. Why? Because it's not true. That's not how reality views the situation. And your nervous system is telling you that none of these things are necessarily True. Your nervous system is letting you know that because those things don't feel good. Jesus had a teaching where he said, my yoke is easy. What he was saying is, like, the way reality works is easy. All things are possible to those who believe. So you live in a world of possibility. One of those possibilities is you can create scarcity for yourself, you can create illness for yourself, you can create death for yourself. But it's just one possibility amongst many. And so when you view that as the only possibility, your nervous system gets activated like an internal lie detector test, and says, hey, you're wrong about that. That's not the way it has to be. I mean, if you think about it, Jesus's entire ministry was explaining that we live in a loving reality that is always working for our greatest growth, our greatest prosperity, and our greatest evolution, and that the problems we experience are meant to pass, not to stay. And so when we think thoughts in contradiction to that truth, we feel that inaccuracy emotionally. So we feel sad, we feel overwhelmed, we feel stressed, we feel anxious, and we think it's the situation that's causing us to feel that way. But what's causing us to feel that way is the meaning that we're giving the situation. And when we feel that way, it's an indicator that the meaning that we are giving is not true. It's that we are entertaining or entangling with ideas that are not in alignment with what's really possible for you. Remember, your nervous system is electromagnetic. Thoughts and emotions are electric. Electromagnetic phenomenon. There's an electric. You're like. You're like this living machinery, and so there's this electrical activity that's going through you. That's what a thought is, that's what an emotion is. And reality itself is energetic? You know, Einstein said reality is an illusion, albeit a persistent one. He was speaking to this idea that, like. Well, when you look at the physical components of reality, they're made up of molecules and atoms and quarks and electrons and photons, and it's mostly space, yet we experience it as very physical. So reality is also energetic or vibrational. And so there's this relationship between the way that we feel and the way that we perceive reality. And when we become entangled with a vibration that is not the vibration of pure reality, which is love and prosperity and abundance, we feel that dissonance in our nervous system as a negative emotion. So it's electromagnetic. And what happens when you think thoughts that aren't true or, as Abe says, are out of alignment with the perspective of your inner being, you're moving into a frequency that is different than the base frequency of reality. So you're moving away from love and from inspiration and from abundance. And so you feel that in your system as a negative emotion. And this is actually a great thing because we can use this inner compass or this emotional guidance system to help us discern what's true and what's not, because we can feel our way through reality to make sure we align with it. And again, Abe describes it as an inner being. I describe it as my higher self or my wise mind. And. And when you're out of alignment with the way that your higher self or God or the universe views things, you feel it. You feel the misalignment as some form of suffering. Distinction number three. Everything is always working out for me. Now, super powerful. How do we believe that? Because Abe says, things are always working out for you, even when it doesn't look that way. Like, every contrast, every problem helps you to clarify what you want. And that expansion becomes part of who you are. So nothing has ever gone wrong, because all of it is contributing to the expansion that your inner being is holding. And when you trust that things are always working out, you come into alignment with the way your inner being sees it. Okay, so this is actually where these first two distinctions come together, the vortex and the inner being. What Abe is saying is that everything is always working out. But what does that mean? Because it doesn't seem like things are working out a lot of the time. Like, hey, I just lost my job. How's that working out for me, Abe, hey, I just got a bad diagnosis. How is that working out? Like, look at what's going on in the world. How can we say, oh, everything's just working out, you know, for our greatest growth. It's working out for me. Fundamentally, what Abe is saying is that we have to experience what we don't want to know, what we do want. This is really important. It's an Eastern concept. It's almost. If you think about the duality of life, the yin and the yang, the dark and the light. You don't know the light without the dark. You don't know the dark without the light. So Abe says, look, what you call problems are actually points of clarification. So we have 8 billion people on the planet with a lot of different perspectives, a lot of different desires. We're all different. We have different wants and needs, and we're all creating our own reality, and then we're bumping up against each other's. Reality. And so it's natural that we would experience friction or contrast or problems. But what you're supposed to do is notice the contrast. Like notice the thing that you don't like, or the problem, but don't get attached to it. Like, hey, I don't like the amount of money in my bank account. I don't like losing my job. But remember, in that moment, you're launching a rocket of desire to create the opposite. The opposite sounds like, I want to be prosperous, I want to have a lot of money in my bank account. I want to have a job I love, I want to have my own business. But the problem is that instead of then moving our attention or focus towards what we want, we actually become addicted to what we don't want. We get addicted to the problem. We talk about the problem, we worry about the problem, we keep all of our attention on the problem, and we post our problem on social media. And so your attention is what's creating your reality. And so instead of the problem showing up temporarily to help you get clear on what you want, and then passing so that the solution can emerge, the problem stays because our attention stays fixed on it too. Again, going back to Jesus, who I think is just one of the, among many things, the goat of metaphysical teachings, he said, turn the other cheek. One of his most powerful, misunderstood teachings. He says, when your enemy or the problem strikes you on the cheek, turn and give them the other cheek. And what he's saying is, turn your attention, turn your head, turn your attention in the direction of what you want. Use the problem or the enemy to springboard your attention towards a desire, a solution, an expansion, super powerful. Most people are like, turn the other cheek. What do you mean? Doesn't that make me a wuss? Doesn't that make me a coward? No, it makes you unbelievably powerful when you understand how reality works. In fact, Abe says that we don't want problems to go away because they're the seeds for the expansion of our desires. Like, if we didn't experience things that we didn't want, we would never know what we do want. So in the sense, everything that happens is working out for you. Now, some people would say, yeah, but look at the atrocities in the world. How's that working out for us? And I would say, well, that's contrast at scale. And experiencing atrocities is actually the seed for being a more civilized and humane society. We have a holocaust. So we can all say, hey, we don't ever want to see that happen again. Like, we Experience racism or sexism or religious persecution, so we can say, hey, what we want is equality and tolerance for all. We experience censorship, so we can say, hey, no. What we're going to create out of that, we're going to turn the cheek and create free speech. So if you zoom out over centuries, this is how our species has progressed. This is called civilization. Problem, solution, problem solution. Even when it's a problem at scale. And then we say, yeah, but what about people dying? What about death? And Abe intentionally makes fun of death by calling it croaking and saying, hey, look, you came into this life, but you lived many lives before, and you'll live many lives after this, so what's the big deal? It's a good point. Now, of course, that's not to make light of what it is to lose a loved one and how it feels and our experience of the material reality in this life. But what Abe is leaning into is this idea that because we don't remember what happened before, and because we can't see beyond into what happens next, we take life more seriously than Abe says it actually is. Now, you don't have to agree with that, but at some level, it does make sense. If this is just one of many incarnations, then death isn't just part of the process. Or rather, it is just part of the process. So it doesn't, you know, negate the fact that we could simultaneously be living in a system that is loving, right? That is always working for us, even in the problems and even in the challenges, even in the civilization scale issues, and even in death. Still, life is always working for our greatest service. Distinction number four. Abe says what you are living right now is the result of vibrations that you have been offering for a while. And she says your present moment is old news. And I love this. She says, what manifests into your experience is always a vibrational match to what you've been practicing. So what you are seeing now is really old news. It's the culmination of previous thoughts. And as you begin offering a different vibration now, your future experiences must change. So I just love this distinction by Abe. And it's actually an observation of how manifestation works. So what Abe is saying is that, look, most people become too committed and entangled with their present moment. But if you look at your present moment, it's the byproduct of what you were thinking and believing before. So you really shouldn't pay that much attention to it. You should not base what's happening in your present moment and allow it to determine what can happen next for you? You shouldn't believe or allow your beliefs to establish themselves based on what's happening now, because what's happening now is based on what you were believing before. So in many ways, Abe is saying, ignore the present moment. You want to be rich. Ignore your present financial insecurity, you want to be healthy. Ignore your present sickness or disease. You want to be in a relationship, ignore your present solitude. You want to have a successful business, ignore your present business challenges, because they don't really mean anything. They're just evidence of what you've been thinking and believing and feeling from before. Now. This can be challenging for a lot of people because what that means is in the midst of this reality, we have to start anticipating what we want next. We have to start acting as if we are wealthy now, even in the midst of financial insecurity. We have to do what a well person would do in terms of thoughts and emotions and actions, even if we're feeling unwell. Because that's how we cast into the future a changed reality. And then given a little bit of time, we will catch up with that changed reality. But most people are experiencing sort of a Bill Murray type of Groundhog Day where it's the same challenges over and over and over again. Because they believe that what's happening in their present moment should inform what they believe about reality. But it shouldn't. It's what I would describe as an echo. It's an echo effect of what you were believing before. And so you do have the right to establish for yourself a new belief, right here, right now, to make a new empowered decision around what reality will be about who you are, about how things work, even in the midst of evidence. Because that evidence is old news. It's expired milk sitting on the shelf. So don't pay a lot of attention to it and instead get clear that whatever it is you're thinking or feeling or believing right now that will project itself into your near term future. So if you want your reality to change, change your beliefs now, regardless of what your current circumstance or situation looks like. Super powerful distinction. And this is where a lot of people in personal growth really struggle because they're unwilling to decide a new reality in the midst of the old one, that they're living in the present moment. But you have to be willing to start commanding reality. And that's what commanding reality is. In the midst of something that is the opposite of what you actually desire, you decide for something new. And given enough time, staying loyal to that new decision, your reality Must change. But you have to be willing to stay loyal to that new decision for a period of time while the old evidence continues to show up. Distinction number five. Abe talks about upstream versus downstream. And so what Abe says is when you're going upstream, you're pushing against the current of your own well being. It feels like effort, like struggle, and trying to make something happen. But when you go downstream, you're in alignment with the flow of who you really are. Downstream feels like ease, like things unfolding, like the right ideas and timing coming to you. You never have to go upstream. Everything you want is downstream. So this very much maps to the two states of being that we teach. Powerful states and primal states. In any moment, you're either in a state of being that feels good, like joy, excitement and curiosity, peace, or you're in some. What we would call a primal state. Some form of suffering, stress, anxiety, overwhelm, anger, depression. You're always in one state of being or the other. You're always in a powerful state or a primal state. You're never in two states of being at the same time. This is actually how your nervous system works. So you're always in either a parasympathetic state in your nervous system. The rest, the relaxation. That's a powerful state of being, or you're in a primal state, which is the sympathetic expression of your nervous system. Fight, flight, or freeze. So Abe describes this as upstream or downstream. Upstream is a primal state. Feels like you're working really hard. It doesn't feel very good. Downstream is going with the flow. That's a powerful state of being. And so Abe's giving us a great tool for checking our thoughts. If a thought doesn't feel good, meaning upstream, we already know it's out of alignment with our inner being. It's not in alignment with the frequency of reality. It's upstream. I would say it's not true. And so now Abe says, great, then let's do the opposite. Let's look for a thought that's more downstream, even if just a little bit more downstream. Let's start to shift the tone of our nervous system. Let's start to shift our vibration. For example, you know, if you have this thought, which is things never work out for me, that doesn't feel good. It's upstream. Now, you could do an affirmation. Get in front of your mirror and start screaming to yourself that things always work out for me. But that probably wouldn't feel very congruent for you, especially if you're in the midst of a Depression and a bunch of things seem not to be working out for you, but you could say most things work out for me. Most things do work out for me. Yeah. I have some things going on in my life right now that aren't working out the way that I expect them to, but most things work out. I did wake up this morning, I was able to successfully brush my teeth. Oh, look, there's oxygen again. I'm able to breathe. My heart is beating on its own. The sun rose. You know, most things are working out for me. And that thought feels a little bit better. And so what Abe is saying is, let's move our thoughts into thoughts that feel a little bit better. Let's find a thought that we can buy into that feels a little bit more downstream. Why? Well, what they're recommending does two things. Number one, you're shifting your vibration, so you're moving into another frequency of emotion that is more conducive to aligning yourself vibrationally with what you want. So you're aligning with the solution or where your inner being already is over there in the matrix, which is stuff working out for us. So you're starting to actually now start to align, put yourself into a vibration that's aligned with more things working out for you. But number two, we're shifting from asympathetic, meaning fight or flight, to parasympathetic, meaning rest or relaxation tone of our nervous system. You're down regulating your nervous system. And so science tells us, look, if you can move into a better feeling thought, you'll have better feeling emotions, you'll take more productive action. You're more likely to produce results that are in alignment with what you want. And so whether you look at it energetically or metaphysically in terms of vibration or practically through the lens of psychology or neuroscience, when you look for a downstream thought, meaning a thought that feels more in flow, a thought that feels better without trying to force it, you start to turn your boat around and flow with reality rather than against it. So it's a super, super useful tool, easy to notice. Am I upstream and am I in a primal state? Am I thinking a thought that doesn't feel good, or am I downstream? Am I in a powerful state? Am I thinking thoughts that do feel good? And if in a primal state, can I just find a slightly different perspective about this situation that moves me a little bit more downstream, that actually has real practical results in you materializing the solution or the desire that you're looking for? Five powerful distinctions from one of today's greatest teachers on the law of attraction and creating your reality, david explained, so that you can actually understand them and use them to make some real practical changes in the way you think, the way you feel, and the reality that you're creating.
