Transcripts

Speaker:

Welcome back to another episode

of the Lazy Girl's Guide to

2

:

Podcasting with me, Verity.

3

:

Today we are talking all about TikTok,

which might sound a little bit strange

4

:

because long time listeners of the

podcast will know that I'm no longer

5

:

active on TikTok in terms of marketing

the podcast and I did a whole episode a

6

:

while ago, which if you haven't listened

to, I will link it in the show notes.

7

:

But But it was all about why

I don't, why I don't promote

8

:

my podcast on TikTok anymore.

9

:

So NBC news reported just

a couple of weeks ago.

10

:

And I quote, TikTok's fate in the U

S has never been more in doubt after

11

:

Congress approved a bill that gives

its parents company two options.

12

:

Sell it to an approved buyer.

13

:

or to see it banned.

14

:

President Joe Biden signed the

legislation into law on Wednesday.

15

:

So in short, the Americans are worried

that information from the app could

16

:

be passed to the Chinese government,

something that TikTok says it does not

17

:

do and will not happen in the future.

18

:

So, Should podcasters

be worried about this?

19

:

Well, I'm going to give

you my take on this.

20

:

Now, I'm not a politician, I'm not

an economist, I know very little

21

:

about the Chinese government and

the way that it's structured and

22

:

works in the scheme of things.

23

:

I know very little, really,

about American politics.

24

:

I don't know the greatest amount

about how TikTok works, or their

25

:

algorithm, anything like that.

26

:

You're probably now thinking at

this point, Verity, why did you

27

:

choose to do an episode on this?

28

:

But I really answer this question

of should podcasters, particularly

29

:

in America, should they be worried?

30

:

Cause we know that millions and

millions of Americans use TikTok.

31

:

A heck of a lot of podcasters use TikTok

in order to promote their podcast.

32

:

We know that the biggest consumers

of podcasts are in the States,

33

:

which stands to reason then that.

34

:

There are a heck of a lot

of podcasters in America.

35

:

You get my point with this.

36

:

So should podcasters be worried?

37

:

Okay, this is my opinion only, but

realistically, I don't think so.

38

:

And here's my reason for this.

39

:

You see, if this bill goes through,

because remember this bill hasn't actually

40

:

gone through yet at time of recording,

So, if this bill goes through, it

41

:

could take years for it to be approved.

42

:

Now, we're going to be having a

change in presidency within the

43

:

next year of this being recorded.

44

:

Will Donald Trump get in?

45

:

Dunno.

46

:

There are some people saying that if

he does get in, then he is gonna be

47

:

absolutely gunning for this legislation.

48

:

But, regardless, when legislation

comes in, it doesn't matter in

49

:

which country or which democracy or

whatever, these things have got a

50

:

process and they take time to come in.

51

:

And like I said, the reality is for this

piece of legislation to come into effect

52

:

is going to take, or could take, years.

53

:

And I think that that's really,

really crucial in terms of

54

:

social media, because Years is a

lifetime in social media accounts.

55

:

You know, we don't know in the next

12, 24, 36 months what social media

56

:

is going to look like, and we don't

know what the new kid on the block in

57

:

terms of social media is going to be.

58

:

It could be in other threads, which,

God love threads, but we all know that

59

:

that's Probably didn't take off in quite

the way that it was expected, because,

60

:

you know, Twitter is still seeing more

activity than threads, I do believe,

61

:

at last, at last look at reports.

62

:

But, and I say that because they

were, it was supposed to be a rival,

63

:

but my point is, is that, you know,

TikTok itself kind of came out of

64

:

nowhere and almost blew up overnight.

65

:

We don't know that there isn't

going to be another app that

66

:

comes out and takes that spot.

67

:

I mean, yes, we've had quite a few social

media platforms that have come out in the

68

:

last couple of years, which have kind of

like, you know, they've tried their way,

69

:

they've tried to be unique and they've

garnered a bit of a fan base and maybe

70

:

they've gone a bit of a cult following,

but they haven't kind of, you know,

71

:

taken the top spots of, you know, those

dominated by Facebook, TikTok, Instagram.

72

:

And whoever else, but as I said, years

is a lifetime in terms of social media,

73

:

so should podcasters be worried about

a potential TikTok ban in America?

74

:

As I said, I don't think so, because

I think, and this is just my humble

75

:

opinion, and obviously, reach out to

me on Twitter if you want to, if you

76

:

want to argue with me on this point,

but I honestly feel that if Twitter, if

77

:

TikTok, not Twitter, sorry, if TikTok did

actually get banned, everybody is just

78

:

going to go over to another platform.

79

:

And people who have got a strong

community following, their supporters,

80

:

their fans will follow them.

81

:

And as I said, we don't know before TikTok

does get banned, if it even gets banned,

82

:

then There is potential for another

social media platform to come out and

83

:

essentially make TikTok look so yesterday.

84

:

In the words of Hilary Duff song.

85

:

If anyone gets that reference, please

tweet me and let me know if you get that.

86

:

And if you do, then I'll know that

you grew up on lizzie McGuire.

87

:

So this is a shorter episode than

normal, but I wanted to give a

88

:

bit of voice to this conversation.

89

:

I wanted to give my opinion to anybody

who's listening, who's, you know,

90

:

concerned about thinking, Oh my gosh, I

need to pull all of my efforts on TikTok.

91

:

I need to switch over to Instagram.

92

:

Gram or any other platform.

93

:

I wouldn't be too stressed

about it at the moment.

94

:

As I said, I'm not concerned

about a potential ban of TikTok,

95

:

but if you are, get in touch with

me over Twitter at VeritySongon.

96

:

Let me know your thoughts.

97

:

Thoughts about a potential ban on TikTok?

98

:

Are you worried about it

for promoting your podcast?

99

:

Are you completely laissez faire

and au fait with it and just not,

100

:

it's not really bothering you?

101

:

You're just going to see what happens?

102

:

I would love to know.

103

:

Otherwise, thank you so much for hanging

out with me on another episode of

104

:

the Lazy Girl's Guide to Podcasting.

105

:

I'm Verity and I will see you next time.
