This week on Non-Judging Breakfast Pod, Leif and Steve break down Gossip Girl Season 4, Episode 17: “Empire of the Son,” an episode packed with daddy issues, secret affidavits, emotional implosions, and one very frozen kiss. From Bart Bass’s legacy of trauma to Serena’s worst decision-making instincts, the guys unpack one of the most pivotal episodes of Season 4.
With corporate warfare at the Empire, friendships tested, and a romantic line crossed that can’t be uncrossed, this episode marks a major tonal shift as the show heads into a long hiatus.
“Empire of the Son” is a turning-point episode—emotionally heavier, more character-driven, and finally rewarding long-term tension (even if it leaves us painfully blue-balled). With major reveals, evolving dynamics, and the promise of chaos ahead, this is peak Gossip Girl momentum heading into hiatus.

The Gossip Girl Theme Performed By Steve Marchion.
I think we all know Nate is like Pete Rose when it
Leif:comes to getting laid.
Steve:I think. I think Nate asks for consent, but.
Leif:He dives in head first.
Steve:But he dives in head first. But yes, I agree with
Steve:that part.
Leif:Hey, Upper East Siders, and all you scandalous
Leif:listeners out there, you just tuned into the non
Leif:judging breakfast pod where the coffee is strong,
Leif:the waffles are fresh, and the gossip is hotter
Leif:than ever. My name is Leif and I'm, um, your
Leif:seasoned Gossip Girl veteran.
Steve:And I'm Steve, the newbie, the greenhorn, the
Steve:rookie, the. What are we saying now that I'm in
Steve:season 4? Leif, shut it down. What?
Leif:This. Olvis, shut it down.
Steve:So here's the deal, folks. Leaf has been watching
Steve:Gossip Girl since it first aired, and I'm diving
Steve:in for the first time. And together, we're your
Steve:dynamic duo, bringing you all the drama, romance,
Steve:and sometimes questionable fashion choices of this
Steve:iconic 2007 series.
Leif:Bring your magnifying glasses, because each week
Leif:we're dissecting every juicy detail of the show
Leif:one episode at a time. We'll connect the dots,
Leif:uncover those sneaky little Easter eggs, and of
Leif:course, serve up some piping hot behind the scenes
Leif:tea. And expect some iconic phantom moments too,
Leif:because what's a deep dive without a little drama?
Steve:And since we are all about inclusivity here on the
Steve:non judging breakfast pod, there is always a seat
Steve:for you at the non judging breakfast table. So go
Steve:ahead and grab a mimosa or a cup of coffee or go
Steve:ahead and roll up whatever Nate has this week. And
Steve:let's get into this, uh, before.
Leif:We get to the episode, I hear you had a milestone
Leif:on the way up here.
Steve:Yes, my. My car reached 100,000 miles right when I
Steve:parked right here in front of the. Right here in
Steve:front of your place.
Leif:Any particular, uh, memories over those 100,000
Leif:miles that stand out?
Steve:What's really funny is I. I, uh, remember when I
Steve:first got the car and I went up to my annual
Steve:homecoming retreat up in Lockhaven with all my
Steve:friends and all my fraternity brothers. And five,
Steve:uh, after being there for about 20 minutes, I
Steve:needed to get something from my car. And when I
Steve:went out and I couldn't get the new key fob that
Steve:went with the car to work. And I kept trying and
Steve:figured out that this isn't my car. And I realized
Steve:that I knew how I was going to get arrested that
Steve:weekend. It was going to be trying to get into
Steve:many other people's cars because that was me
Steve:sober. And I knew that There is a long weekend
Steve:ahead of me of trying to remember which car was
Steve:mine, but. Yeah. But other than that, watching
Steve:both Jake and Emily drive in it at one point or
Steve:another was also a super cool thing. Like,
Steve:watching your kid drive is really cool and
Steve:extraordinarily nerve wracking. But more cool than
Steve:nerve wracking.
Leif:It made me think of that, uh, How I Met yout
Leif:Mother episode where they have. They show, like,
Leif:all the flashback to all the memories they had
Leif:with the car. Yeah, yeah.
Steve:With the, uh.
Leif:I. Uh-huh.
Steve:Would walk 5,100 miles. Yeah. The. The Proclaimers
Steve:song. Who's stuck in the cassette player?
Leif:Well, now that we've bored everyone, we are
Leif:actually here to talk about Gossip girl.
Steve:Yes.
Leif:Season four, episode 17, Empire of the Sun.
Steve:Yes.
Leif:Original air date was February 28, 2011 and so the
Leif:spelling of the episode is sun, as in father and
Leif:son. But it's based on a movie called Empire of
Leif:the sun within the Rising Sun.
Steve:Yes, yes.
Leif:S U N. Yes. Uh, which is described as a young
Leif:English boy struggles to survive under Japanese
Leif:occupation of China during World War II. Directed
Leif:by Steven Spielberg and starring Christian Bale,
Leif:John Malkovich, and Miranda Richardson. Damn.
Steve:I did not realize that Christian Bale was in that,
Steve:because I think I saw that movie. What is it,
Steve:like, 80.
Leif:87.
Steve:87, I think.
Leif:So he would have been like, a kid.
Steve:Yeah, I think I saw that movie in the theater.
Steve:Yeah, Yeah. I mean, he was. Yeah. I mean, the
Steve:movie was like, there is this young emperor kid,
Steve:but there's this. An American kid or maybe a
Steve:British kid who was. Who befriended him. I think
Steve:it may have been a British kid. Again. Like, I saw
Steve:this in the theater, so I was nine.
Leif:Yeah.
Steve:But. Yeah, And I believe this came out around the
Steve:time of. What's the Eddie Murphy movie?
Leif:Beverly Hills Cop.
Steve:No, no, no.
Leif:48 hours.
Steve:No, the one where he. Where he goes on a trip on,
Steve:like, a mystical Asian adventure. Uh, I got the
Steve:knife.
Leif:Yeah. I should talk about that. The Golden Child.
Steve:Golden Child, Yeah. So these two movies kind of
Steve:also hold similar places in my brain, and I don't
Steve:know which ones are which, because I was. Again, I
Steve:was nine and a much more racist.
Leif:I haven't seen Empire of the Slime, but I feel
Leif:like it's a very different movie.
Steve:Very. Oh, my God. It's a completely different
Steve:movie. It's just that because I saw these two
Steve:movies that were. It's like one was almost a
Steve:parody of the other. Uh, but it wasn't, you know,
Steve:it was just Very similar themes. So it's like. Oh,
Steve:is that the. No, no, that's not the Eddie Murphy
Steve:one.
Leif:So this episode of Gossip Girl is written by
Leif:Robert hall, who's done quite a few episodes
Leif:already. Season 2, he did X Files, It's a
Leif:Wonderful Lie, the Grandfather, and in season
Leif:three, the Lost Boy, the Treasure of Serena Madre
Leif:with Joshua Saffron, uh, the lady vanished and Dr.
Leif:Estranged love. And then so far this season he did
Leif:Goodbye Columbia and Gaslit Once Again with Joshua
Leif:Safran. So his two best episodes were co written.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:And then a mix of decent to not, uh, so decent
Leif:episodes.
Steve:Yeah, and he's had some really bad ones too. Which
Steve:one with Gaslit just happened.
Leif:Yes, the one, uh, that's the one where.
Steve:Oh, that's like the last good one of season four.
Steve:That's the one where Jenny leaves. Right. Like
Steve:that's the one where everything comes out.
Leif:Yes, everything comes out. Yeah. Serena's in the
Leif:Ostros Center. She just woke up.
Steve:Yeah. Yes, yes. Being drugged. Yeah, yeah.
Leif:The great scene with Dan and Lily at the loft.
Steve:Mhm. Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. And you had the
Steve:convergence at the end where they all confront
Steve:Juliet. Is that that one too? No, uh, or that was
Steve:the two or three episodes.
Leif:Yeah, that was you at the opera, you mean? Yeah,
Leif:that was, uh, like episode eight, maybe.
Steve:Oh, okay.
Leif:This episode was directed by David Warren. It's
Leif:his first of three episodes. Uh, but his longtime
Leif:tv, uh, director worked on Ugly Betty, Weeds,
Leif:Desperate Housewives, the 90210 reboot, Carrie
Leif:Diaries, iZombie, Grayson, Frankie. Pretty wide,
Leif:solid.
Steve:Some solid credits there too.
Leif:Why don't you give us that vulture recap?
Steve:Okay. Uh, fathers have played a dark and terrible
Steve:role in many works of art. They can be scheming,
Steve:indifferent, cruel, or merely hapless. And Gossip
Steve:Girl is no exception. In last night's episode,
Steve:Raina finds out that her father, despite his
Steve:cuckold family man, main and midwestern love of
Steve:hot dogs, actually is as scheming and conniving as
Steve:any given billionaire businessman. For instance,
Steve:Chuck Bass. Meanwhile, on a father son coffee date
Steve:that stretches into lunch, Dan can't tell Rufus,
Steve:who is like his best friend, about his friendship
Steve:with Blair. It is because he's scared he might
Steve:have feelings for Blair or because his father is
Steve:wearing the rolled jeans of the creative
Steve:judgmental. Maybe a little of both. It appears
Steve:later in the episode when Rufus makes a snotty
Steve:remark about how crazy it would be if the secret
Steve:relationship Dan was going on about was with
Steve:Blair. Obviously, Rufus Raised him with more sense
Steve:and morals than to involve himself with a rich,
Steve:scheming bee like that. Dan Humphrey pays for his
Steve:glibness later when Billy Baldwin swashbuckles
Steve:into town all tasseled helicopter hair and long
Steve:legs and not looking at all sorry about his
Steve:earlier attempt to break up Rufus and Lily's
Steve:marriage to assert himself as man of the house now
Steve:that Lily has sent herself to prison. But as
Steve:usual, it is Chuck who suffers the worst paternal
Steve:insult. This time, Bart Bass has betrayed him from
Steve:beyond the grave, which we are to understand from
Steve:his copious scotch drinking at the end of the
Steve:episode is the most frustrating kind of betrayal.
Steve:Most likely because you can't tell. You can't yell
Steve:you never loved me at someone who is dead. Well,
Steve:you can, but usually by the time you get in the
Steve:car and drive out to the grave site and you have
Steve:A, already calmed down about it, and B, realize
Steve:the gesture is super derivative. Why Chuck chose
Steve:to take the very weird and improbable information
Steve:given to him from a boozed up Russell Thorpe, his
Steve:father's sworn rival, instead of, you know, at
Steve:least nexiting on it or something is confusing.
Steve:Nexus. Nexusing. Um, is that a reference to
Steve:something that I'm missing?
Leif:I, I'm not sure. It's capital.
Steve:It's the capital N. Yeah. Weird.
Leif:Guessing it is, but yeah, I don't know.
Steve:My phone made it through the Vulture recap, which
Steve:is really good.
Leif:Nice.
Steve:And now I don't need it.
Leif:And it was a long one, but it was a pretty good
Leif:one, though.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah, it was.
Leif:We open Act 1 in media res. A somber Lily and
Leif:Rufus are walking up a grand staircase to meet
Leif:some lawyers at the top.
Steve:And right here it's like, oh, wow, Lily's turning
Steve:herself in. Like, that's cool. But then flashback.
Leif:I've never been to court in New York City, but I'm
Leif:guessing that is some kind of recognizable
Leif:courthouse.
Steve:I would assume so.
Leif:I, I, that's a very nice architecture.
Steve:I would, I would even go as far as to say it's
Steve:probably one of those buildings that is so cool
Steve:looking. And it's probably all offices at this
Steve:point. No actual courtrooms, because you see that
Steve:in Phillies. I'm like, all the courthouses in
Steve:Philly are just buildings that are very, uh,
Steve:they're not as big and beautiful. But City hall,
Steve:that no longer has any courtrooms. That's where
Steve:you would want to shoot any court. That's where I
Steve:think they shot the court scenes for like
Steve:Philadelphia and stuff like that.
Leif:And Then we go to 12 hours earlier and with a
Leif:Gossip Girl narration. They say Rome wasn't built
Leif:in a day, and yet, what a difference a day makes.
Leif:We see a much happier Rufus and Lily having
Leif:breakfast on the tv. We see Chuck ringing the bell
Leif:at the New York Stock Exchange. Nate and Raina are
Leif:making googly eyes at each other. Serena dismisses
Leif:a missed call notification from Vanessa before
Leif:walking into Blair's room, who is also watching
Leif:Chuck at the stock exchange. A little quick, uh,
Leif:montage at the open the episode.
Steve:Yeah, yeah, I thought that was also kind of funny
Steve:with Chuck, like young bass. Young Mr. Bass
Steve:ringing the bell.
Leif:Yeah. We move downstairs and the besties are
Leif:having breakfast being served by a skeptical
Leif:Dorota. Blair is acting very Zen despite having a
Leif:pretty bad week last episode. Serena is concerned
Leif:that Ben stopped communicating right after they
Leif:had sex for the first time. After Sarina leaves,
Leif:Dorota confronts Blair about being too content.
Leif:Blair, trying to save face, orders Dorota to go
Leif:pick up her cocktail dress for Chuck's party
Leif:tonight. Once Dorota leaves, Blair texts someone.
Leif:The coast is clear. Come over.
Steve:Ben is the shittiest fucking person on the planet.
Steve:Like the fact that he doesn't have any response to
Steve:her and I. We know why, but it's also like, you
Steve:can't drop her a text. Yeah. Can't be like, yo, I
Steve:can't talk. My mom's here. So Serena being a
Steve:little upset here makes sense. Uh, but I also. I
Steve:love Blair's Zen here. Mhm. And this. We didn't
Steve:get to Dorota confronting her yet, Right?
Leif:Ah, well, she confronts her about being too
Leif:content.
Steve:Yes. Yeah. It's so good when she's like,
Steve:something's wrong. You haven't yelled at me. Yeah.
Steve:And she's like, well, here's something I'll yell
Steve:at you about. You haven't picked up my dress from
Steve:Chuck's party yet. And it was. And Dorota just
Steve:having that look of like, I'm on to you, like, so
Steve:just her suspicion was so good. I really loved the
Steve:foils of Rufus and Dorota in this episode.
Leif:Uh, Chuck enters Russell's office looking for
Leif:Reina. Chuck, ever the multitasker, decides to do
Leif:a little gloating, but Russell brushes it off and
Leif:hints at having one last card up his sleeve.
Steve:Something that I've kind of picked up from Robin
Steve:is she tells me all the time that in Jewish
Steve:custom, you don't celebrate something before it
Steve:happens. And when Chuck is like, yeah, I'm going
Steve:to close this big Deal tomorrow. So I'm going to
Steve:have a huge party tonight. It's like, bruh, uh,
Steve:like, close the deal first. Close the deal, then
Steve:have a big party.
Leif:Yeah. Reyna asked Nate if he told Chuck about them
Leif:yet. Nate says he hasn't. Serena gives him the
Leif:option of backing out or diving in head first. I
Leif:think we all know Nate is like Pete Rose when it
Leif:comes to getting laid.
Steve:I think. I think Nate asks for consent, but.
Leif:He dives in head first.
Steve:But he dives in head first. But, yes, I agree with
Steve:that part. Uh, oh, yeah. I like them together, so
Steve:I thought it was nice.
Leif:They're fine.
Steve:Yeah. I mean, Nate is always going to just be
Steve:boring when he's in a relationship, but, like,
Steve:it's cute.
Leif:Dan has arrived at Blair's to go to the Joseph
Leif:boys exhibit. Blair is still planning, uh,
Leif:entrance and exit strategies to present a layer of
Leif:plausible deniability. When Dorota calls out
Leif:looking for Blair, and she ushers Dan out of the
Leif:bathroom into Serena's room. Dorota enters and is
Leif:wondering who Blair was talking to. Blair deflects
Leif:the question and says she will come to the
Leif:cleaners with Dorota. As Blair walks out to get
Leif:her coat, Dorota spots Dan's New York magazine. He
Leif:left a moment earlier.
Steve:This scene was perfection. Like, I loved every bit
Steve:of it. I loved the banter between the two of them,
Steve:having an exit strategy and an excuse for why they
Steve:would have run into each other at the same place.
Steve:The plausible deniability. And then kicking him
Steve:into Serena's room. And Dorota coming in and just
Steve:Doroda being totally sus is so great.
Leif:And what are you speaking to?
Steve:Yeah, maybe it's your sixth sense hearing voices.
Steve:Yeah, it was perfection.
Leif:Daniel Humphrey.
Steve:Yes, the full government name, too. Daniel
Steve:Humphrey. Which. And even I, uh, I can't wait. I
Steve:love. I love Dorota.
Leif:In this whole episode, Serena goes to the loft to
Leif:find out why Ben has been dodging her. However,
Leif:Ben doesn't invite her in because his mom is
Leif:visiting and he hasn't told her about him and
Leif:Serena. Gossip Girl begins quipping as the scene
Leif:shifts to Lily getting her dry cleaning back along
Leif:with an orange jumpsuit.
Steve:No, here. Why don't we just have lunch at my place
Steve:on nice, neutral ground where I can, like, let's
Steve:go to my penthouse apartment.
Leif:Uh, that's actually after the commercial.
Steve:Oh, is it after the commercial?
Leif:This is where he's like, oh, this is Serena. She's
Leif:friends with my roommate Dan.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. There was Another part here.
Leif:That's so fucked up, man.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. And there was something else in that
Steve:scene, and I wish I could remember it, but I'll
Steve:try to find it for the postscript. There was
Steve:something else that, like, really hit me in their
Steve:conversation, where it's like, serena, what the
Steve:fuck?
Leif:Then we see Lily getting the jumpsuit.
Steve:Yeah. From. From Russell. Which, like, Russell,
Steve:like, good move. Yeah, Good, good move.
Leif:And this is kind of what Gossip Girl said in
Leif:between those two scenes. Sorry, S. Looks like
Leif:your sweetheart's mom is still a little sour. But
Leif:when it comes to life's bitter pills, the hardest
Leif:to swallow is a taste of your own medicine. Holy
Leif:mixed metaphors, Batman. We move into Act 2. Ben,
Leif:still out in the hall with Serena, explains why he
Leif:didn't tell Serena his mom was here. Serena
Leif:suggests lunch. Just the three of them.
Steve:Yeah. So this is. You know, let's just go back to
Steve:a nice, neutral place and have lunch. The three of
Steve:you can go to any place in the city, and you
Steve:choose to take her to your home to impress
Steve:somebody who hates you. And largely why she hates
Steve:you is because your family used your monumental
Steve:wealth to put her kid in jail. And so just the
Steve:detachment of Serena to be like, let's just go.
Steve:Let me just go get lunch at my place. By the way,
Steve:while I'm ordering, I'm not going to ask you if
Steve:you have any food allergies, so don't. Then don't
Steve:tell me if there's anything you can't eat now that
Steve:I'm placing an order for food. And also. Yeah,
Steve:like, order there. Why are you. A lot of this
Steve:episode I really liked. There's so much I like.
Steve:The stuff that I didn't like was the. Why, like,
Steve:why would you do that dumb shit? And this is one
Steve:of those things.
Leif:But I don't think that's necessarily bad writing
Leif:for Serena.
Steve:Uh, yeah, I don't think it's out of Serena's
Steve:character. I mean, it's a very Serena thing to do.
Steve:Oh, I'll just show you how great I am by taking
Steve:you to my house. That's not really my house.
Steve:That's not your house, Serena.
Leif:That's Blair's house.
Steve:Yeah, that's Blair's house.
Leif:I guess that's why it's somewhat neutral. Yeah,
Leif:it's not even really her ass. She just has a room
Leif:there because.
Steve:She'S technically actually homeless.
Leif:Well, she's not. I mean, she has a room there.
Steve:She's. She. I mean, she has a room there, but she
Steve:doesn't really have, like, but she, like, lives
Steve:with Blair.
Leif:Yeah.
Steve:So, like, it's not like if at any given moment,
Steve:Blair could just kick her out.
Leif:Although, like we said recently, she has enough
Leif:money in her trust fund that she can.
Steve:Yeah. Just buy anything. Yeah, go.
Leif:Like, Eric was about to write a hundred thousand
Leif:dollar check like it was nothing.
Steve:Right? Yeah, Eric. Yeah, Eric was just. And her
Steve:and their mom was like, no, I'll do that. Like,
Steve:she was saying, like, oh, no, I'll buy lunch this
Steve:week for 100 grand. That he was just like, on. On
Steve:the day his. He can get into it, you know, he can
Steve:get to his trust.
Leif:And Lily thought that was a reasonable amount for,
Leif:like, some, uh, amount of drugs.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. How much can one banana cost?
Leif:Lily and Chuck are discussing the jumpsuit and
Leif:decide Russell must be behind it. However, if he
Leif:had actual proof, he would have moved already.
Leif:Chuck suggests Lily take a closer look at Ben
Leif:while he investigates some other leads. Yeah, that
Leif:was a little bit of a loose plot, Right. Because
Leif:what other leads did he investigate?
Steve:Yeah, yeah.
Leif:Not that we needed more Chuck, but.
Steve:No, but. But, like, it was just sort of.
Leif:Uh, I want to go home and smoke some weed.
Steve:Right. Yeah, you.
Leif:You go do some work.
Steve:Well, and also, actually, you know, the other
Steve:leads that I. I bet what he was. I wonder if we're
Steve:supposed to be thinking that he does. Isn't going
Steve:to look at other leads, but he wants to go
Steve:confront Nate about the Raina thing. Gonna follow
Steve:a lead to Nate's.
Leif:So, I mean, by your reasoning, Nate is also
Leif:homeless.
Steve:Yes.
Leif:Because he's living with Chuck.
Steve:Yes. Although Nate does own an apartment somewhere
Steve:between Columbia and nyu.
Leif:Did he buy that or did he rent that?
Steve:Oh, I don't know. I don't know. Well, and the
Steve:other side of that is also that. Well, yeah, I
Steve:mean, by that logic, although I feel like Nate is
Steve:a little bit more autonomous, but, uh, but, like,
Steve:yeah, if Chuck was mad right now, he could just be
Steve:like, get out. Yeah, but again, like, any one of
Steve:them could stay at any place in the entire city
Steve:that they want to. Oh, I'm just gonna rent out the
Steve:roof of the plaza.
Leif:Dan invites Rufus to coffee to ask vague advice
Leif:about his situationship with Blair. When he
Leif:doesn't like what Rufus has to say, he decides to
Leif:blow Blair off to make the coffee a lunch.
Steve:It's so great. Like, what? No, I don't have
Steve:feelings for her. I don't even need to go see her.
Steve:Look, let's go have lunch right now. Like, it was
Steve:Absolutely. Great.
Leif:Yeah.
Steve:As we know, the Blair's doing the same thing right
Steve:now to going to the cleaners because. Yeah. So
Steve:good.
Leif:Dorota and Blair are also walking together. After
Leif:Blair deflects a series of probing questions,
Leif:Dorota comes right out and shows her Dan's
Leif:magazine and accuses her of having an affair with
Leif:lonely Boy. When Dorota demands they tell Serena,
Leif:Blair also decides to blow off the quasi date with
Leif:Dan.
Steve:Yeah. I loved that Dorota called him Lonely boy.
Steve:You and lonely boy are having an affair? It was.
Steve:Which. The only time that that's really come up is
Steve:on Gossip Girl, so you just know that Dorota is,
Steve:like, catching up on Gossip Girl or Gossip Girl.
Leif:Wow.
Steve:She. They're always quiet. They. You know, people
Steve:always say too much in front of people that are.
Steve:That, you know, that they see as.
Leif:That's true. That is true. Serena has invited Ben
Leif:and his mother over to the Waldorf apartment for
Leif:lunch, but things are going awkwardly. Serena
Leif:excuses herself when she gets an urgent text from
Leif:Lily. Lily wants. Serena asked Ben if he told
Leif:anyone about the affidavit.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Yeah. This is where you get the lactose
Leif:intolerant.
Steve:Yeah. Yes. And.
Leif:And I guess we're having salads.
Steve:Yeah. You didn't think. If someone's like, hey,
Steve:I'm gonna get lunch.
Leif:What do you like?
Steve:What do you like? And also, though, okay, if
Steve:you're ordering nothing with dairy, please. Both
Steve:ends of this is a very simple conversation that.
Steve:Oh, my God.
Leif:I mean, it is like a trope to get pizza when
Leif:you're in New York City. I guess.
Steve:Mhm.
Leif:But yeah, I mean, it would. Would have been smart
Leif:to ask first.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah.
Leif:But again, a total Serena thing to do.
Steve:It is a very Serena thing to do. Everybody likes
Steve:what I like. Also, I think that might be the first
Steve:time we've seen the meat pizza on the show and
Steve:they didn't even eat it. And also, Serena, you're
Steve:not lactose intolerant. You and Ben aren't. Go
Steve:ahead and eat the pizza. And why do you have two
Steve:pizzas for three people?
Leif:Because they have one slice of each and then throw
Leif:the rest out.
Steve:Yes. Yes. There's one pepperoni, one mushroom.
Leif:Uh, I see how these people prepare meals. Yes.
Steve:Would you care for a water? No.
Leif:Right into the trash. Lily is shocked and annoyed
Leif:when Vanessa shows up at the penthouse, but her
Leif:ears perk up when Vanessa reveals she has to tell
Leif:Serena something about Ben.
Steve:Yes, Lily, we're all annoyed when Vanessa shows
Steve:up. Um.
Leif:She'S not even A character anymore.
Steve:Yeah, yeah. She's just a plot device.
Leif:Ben admits to his mother that he and Serena are
Leif:dating, but she already knows she is against it
Leif:because as long as he is with Serena, there is no
Leif:hope of getting his name cleared. She excuses
Leif:herself to grab her purse before leaving. The
Leif:camera pulls out, and it's revealed that Serena
Leif:was eavesdropping on the conversation.
Steve:Not mad at mom here. She's not really wrong. Like,
Steve:you don't have a chance. Like, the person that you
Steve:want to be to deserve this other person you can't
Steve:be because you have to destroy her family to do
Steve:it. And when he's like, no, I'm not going to do
Steve:all that. I won't do that, and she's like, oh,
Steve:well, I think I left my purse upstairs in the
Steve:bedroom. Yep. Why were you. Why did you take them
Steve:on a tour upstairs to your room? Serene. Why did
Steve:you take his mom to your room?
Leif:But I guess the whole thing, you know, leaving
Leif:people's coats on the bed or something. But when
Leif:it's only three of them.
Steve:Well, and.
Leif:And I'm sure the Walters have a coat rack.
Steve:Well. But she does give her a tour of the entire
Steve:place because she says, oh, I'm so. I'm exhausted
Steve:from all the walking after seeing the entire, uh,
Steve:house. So she does make a dig about it being too
Steve:big of a place.
Leif:Blair and Dorota shopping trip is still ongoing,
Leif:but when Blair spots Dan, she pushes Dorota to go
Leif:grab them a table for l. Dan and Blair realize
Leif:they both stood each other up when Dan tells Blair
Leif:that Rufus will be coming out of the restaurant
Leif:behind him any minute. The two part ways.
Steve:Dan was stone cold in this whole scene. And it was
Steve:amazing the way he's like, yeah, I'm standing you
Steve:up. No, I'm standing you up. Yeah. Uh, but. And
Steve:she goes to explain. He goes, well, I'm just gonna
Steve:say that, uh, my dad is about to come out here,
Steve:and I don't see an exit strategy for you. We're
Steve:not done here. Yes, we are. But also on top of
Steve:that, their looks at each other, the fleeting
Steve:look, the looks on their faces when they're both
Steve:contemplating the gravity of that moment. I really
Steve:liked, uh, the acting in this, especially Blair
Steve:and Dan just really conveying so much in their
Steve:face. I should also make mention Blair's makeup in
Steve:this. The. That they have it very toned down to
Steve:make her almost look like she's not wearing
Steve:makeup, which, again, it's like she's not out
Steve:flirting. She's not out impressing people. She's
Steve:not out trying to look pretty. She's not trying to
Steve:impress this guy because she doesn't like him,
Steve:because she's just hanging out with him. So I
Steve:think that it was cool, cool, cool that they made
Steve:that note and how they toned down her makeup, too.
Leif:We get another Gossip Girl narration before going
Leif:to the break. Why would a friendship based on
Leif:fight suddenly end in flight? They say we only run
Leif:from the things that truly scare us.
Steve:Right on, Gossip Girl. Right on. Uh, I'll give her
Steve:that one.
Leif:That was a good one.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:We move into Act 3 at the Empire. Chuck confronts
Leif:Nate and Reina about them being together. And Nate
Leif:admits that he likes Reina, and Reina likes him.
Steve:He's just talking to Nate first, right? Yeah,
Steve:yeah. But it's funny because, like, it's such a
Steve:good scene for these two because they've been here
Steve:before with Blair, where Nate almost strangled him
Steve:on the back of a car. And now you have. It's like,
Steve:bro, I talked you up. I did everything you wanted
Steve:me to do. Nothing has happened. I like her, so.
Leif:And she likes me.
Steve:Uh, and she likes me. And that's where we're at.
Steve:And, you know, Chuck being like, there's a knife
Steve:in my back. And he's like, hey, like, I'm not
Steve:trying to do this to you. This is just how. Where
Steve:we are. And then Chuck's like, okay, well, let me
Steve:just, you know, get one thing out of this. Which
Steve:then I'm like, oh, God, is he gonna manipulate
Steve:Nate? Is he gonna have Nate manipulate Reina as
Steve:they're starting to date? But even then, he
Steve:doesn't. He just wants to talk to her at the loft.
Leif:Blair tells Dan that the reason she stood him up
Leif:is because Dorota assumed them sneaking around
Leif:meant they were having an affair. They come up
Leif:with a plan to send a tip to Gossip Girl that a
Leif:big secret's going to come out at Chuck's party
Leif:tonight. So they reveal their friendship. It will
Leif:be underwhelming and quickly forgotten. It's a
Leif:piece of plaid.
Steve:It really is. Like, oh, wait, that's the big news.
Steve:They're friends. Like, it's actually a really.
Steve:It's a decent plan for these two. Uh, and, yeah,
Steve:it's, like, light scheming now.
Leif:It's pretty. Caught him for big news to come out
Leif:these parties. They weren't really thinking about
Leif:that. But, yeah, it was a good idea.
Steve:But for it to be something so minuscule, you know,
Steve:the hype being like, well, if Something always
Steve:comes out. You're right. But at the same time,
Steve:like, oh, and that's not even worth hyping.
Leif:Chuck meets with Reina and asks her to stop her
Leif:father from revealing Lily's dirty laundry. Yeah.
Steve:Happened.
Leif:Lily brings Vanessa to the Waldorf apartment to
Leif:tell Serena what she overheard from Ben last week.
Leif:Serena is doubtful, but when Vanessa leaves, Lily
Leif:tells Serena that she should believe her. Serena
Leif:reveals that she kept the affidavit, and when she
Leif:and Lily go to check its hiding place, they find
Leif:it missing.
Steve:Yeah. Smooth. You took it out of the safe.
Leif:Yeah.
Steve:And put it in your dresser drawer and then told
Steve:the guy who is most affected by it where it is.
Steve:You dumb asshole.
Leif:Pretty much.
Steve:Also, Vanessa, you also left out the bit about Ben
Steve:threatening to murder Damian. Yeah, yeah. He beat
Steve:up Nate's dad. Oh. And he threatened to kill a guy
Steve:if he did anything.
Leif:No one cares about Damien.
Steve:No. Oh, do you think he could have gotten it done?
Steve:Like Lily's like, oh, does he know people? Maybe I
Steve:should keep Ben around. Maybe I need Ben in my. In
Steve:my blackmail. In my blackmail account file.
Leif:And, uh, this is what Gossip Girl has to say about
Leif:it. Looks like the jury on Ben might be out after
Leif:all. We move into Act 4. Chuck enters the party of
Leif:the week to a sea of congratulations and photo
Leif:ops. After a quick speech, Chuck goes to Lily to
Leif:explain the plan to expose Thorpe to Reina.
Steve:Yeah. As far as Chuck plans go, it lines up and it
Steve:works so good. Good job. This was one of those,
Steve:like, they needed so much of this. They needed
Steve:big, heavy weight that they didn't have. It was
Steve:all of these big, dramatic things. It's like, uh,
Steve:it felt weak.
Leif:It appears Reyes most defining characteristic at
Leif:this point is she has firm boundaries. Once you
Leif:cross that boundary, she's done.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. At least the third or fourth time you
Steve:cross it, she is done. And she also has always
Steve:maintained this family. Family, family thing.
Leif:Mhm. Apparently she's Vin Diesel from Fast and the
Leif:Furious.
Steve:Family.
Leif:Serena tells Lily that she hasn't heard from Ben,
Leif:but still thinks that she can stop him from if he
Leif:shows up tonight. Serena apologizes to Lily, but
Leif:Lily admits that everything is ultimately her. Her
Leif:responsibility.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:This is the kind of the start of Lily finally
Leif:taking responsibility.
Steve:Yeah, Lily, I, uh, mean, Lily had a good episode
Steve:in Moral Standards. In Moral Standards in
Steve:parenting. Yeah. Her shit with the DA later too,
Steve:like, was super good. And like, Kelly Rutherford
Steve:had a good episode too. But yeah, this. Her taking
Steve:ownership. And you know, she also did last week.
Steve:Was it last week with the trust fund, where, you
Steve:know, when she paid off Damien instead, uh, like,
Steve:she did start showing that, like, accountability,
Steve:but here she starts to actually be like, wow, I'm
Steve:going to actually need to face up to this.
Leif:Blair asks Serena if she saw the Gossip Girl blast
Leif:about a big secret coming out. Serena says she
Leif:has, and it tells Blair she thinks it's about the
Leif:affidavit. Dan comes up and sees Blair profusely
Leif:apologizing and assumes she told Serena about
Leif:Blair and Dan hanging out. Before Dan can put his
Leif:foot in his mouth, Blair shushes him, which is.
Steve:So good because Dan always does that shit. Dan
Steve:always fucks up like that. So for Blair to just
Steve:cut him off, which, again, also shows the
Steve:chemistry with these two that they've hung out
Steve:enough that they know when to cut each other off.
Steve:She knows Dan well enough to know that he's going
Steve:to come up and say something smug and stupid and
Steve:out the whole thing.
Leif:I feel like they balance each other out because
Leif:Dan is too honest and Blair is too schemy.
Steve:Yes, yes.
Leif:They meet in the middle.
Steve:Exactly. Exactly. And it's why their schemes
Steve:always work, I think, because, like, it has to be
Steve:something that Dan will be willing to go along
Steve:with.
Leif:Serena confronts Ben about the affidavit, which
Leif:she denies having taken. He does, however, admit
Leif:to having Howie beat up and then finally show
Leif:Serena some of that anger we've been seeing
Leif:lurking under the surface.
Steve:Although when he gets angry, when she's like, oh,
Steve:I understand, he's like, you don't? Uh, I'm not
Steve:mad at him for that. He has really done a lot to
Steve:prove to Serena that she can trust him. And
Steve:Serena's not going to. And of course, Serena's not
Steve:going to, because look at Serena's entire life
Steve:friendship, like, all of her upbringing. She has
Steve:never been able to trust anybody, um, for more
Steve:than 10 minutes at a time. And that's maybe Blair
Steve:here and there. But, like, she also can. The one
Steve:thing she can trust about Blair is that the second
Steve:Blair needs to, she's going to do something to
Steve:Serena if she. If it'll help her, you know? So,
Steve:yeah, Serena, of course, isn't gonna trust him.
Steve:He's a convicted felon after all.
Leif:Yeah. Mrs. Sharp approaches Lily, and Lily quickly
Leif:figures out that she is the one who stole the
Leif:affidavit and has teamed up with Russell.
Steve:I love the. Wow. You people just think money can
Steve:do anything. So I'm gonna sell this thing off to
Steve:the highest bitter and get my son. And I do Hope
Steve:that she may cut a deal with Russell before just
Steve:handing that over. Like I'm hoping that she walked
Steve:out of there with a Benz at least.
Leif:Or did, uh, she just go for revenge?
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. Is it just get my son out scot free
Steve:and we're good. Which noble. But come on, lady.
Leif:Dan once again goes to Rufus for advice. But
Leif:before he can ask, Rufus gets all judgmental
Leif:because he saw Dan talking to Blair. Lily
Leif:interrupts and asks for a moment alone to talk to
Leif:Rufus, not Blair Waldorf.
Steve:That would be crazy. Come on.
Leif:Raina enters the suite and is surprised to find
Leif:Nate. Before she can explain what's going on, she
Leif:pulls him into another room. Just as Russell,
Leif:Chuck and Lily head off the elevator. Russell
Leif:quickly gets to the point, revealing he has the
Leif:affidavit and threatens to reveal it if Chuck
Leif:doesn't sign over Bass Industries. Reyna bursts in
Leif:and rebukes her father. After Reyna storms off
Leif:with Nate, Lily tells Russell and Chuck that she
Leif:has already called the DA and plans to turn
Leif:herself in once Lily leaves. Russell hints there
Leif:is more to his hatred of Bart than just the love
Leif:triangle with Lily, which this one.
Steve:Reina. This is where it was like, how dare you
Steve:blackmail them? But like, uh, again, like you
Steve:said, Reina has always shown that, like, she does
Steve:have boundaries and she does operate within a
Steve:code.
Leif:Yeah, everything's got to be on the up and up.
Steve:Yes.
Leif:She does not like the scheming.
Steve:Yeah. And she hated it from Chuck. And then to see
Steve:it turned around. Hated it when her dad did it. So
Steve:I thought it was a little underwhelming. I. I felt
Steve:like a lot of the stuff was underwhelming with
Steve:overreactions to it. Mhm. Oh, I have this
Steve:affidavit that proves that you did something
Steve:wrong. I mean, I get it. He is blackmailing her,
Steve:so I get why that's bad. But I also feel like he.
Steve:They could have done something with more gravity,
Steve:I felt, but I don't know.
Leif:And this is what Gossip Girl has to say about it.
Leif:Careful, Chuck. When it comes to Bart Bass seek
Leif:and who knows what you may find. We move into Act
Leif:5. Nate catches up with Reina on the street
Leif:outside the hotel. Nate encourages her to look
Leif:past his faults and realize that her father still
Leif:loves her. They kiss before going somewhere to
Leif:watch the game highlights.
Steve:Nate is. Nate should be a therapist. I keep saying
Steve:it. He's right. I know that there was that moment
Steve:when I stopped idolizing my dad, but there's a
Steve:time before that. And then there's that moment.
Steve:But then when you look back and you see all of
Steve:these points where it's like, oh, wow, my dad's
Steve:just like another human being who fucks up a lot
Steve:and you have to take the good and the bad and you
Steve:know how I feel about my dad. Like, I don't even
Steve:talk to him because I have difficulty really
Steve:having that relationship. It doesn't mean I don't
Steve:love him. But, like, that disillusionment, it's
Steve:heavy.
Leif:Yeah. When.
Steve:When you have that. That notion of, like, this guy
Steve:that I remember my best friend at a bar in
Steve:California when we were hammered was like, your
Steve:dad's an asshole. And I was like 23 years old, and
Steve:I was like, what? My dad. What are you talking
Steve:about? My dad's amazing. And then like a little
Steve:while later being like, oh, he's kind of an
Steve:asshole. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, he does drink gin at 10am
Steve:and say it's nude somewhere.
Leif:Hang out with Cece.
Steve:They would get along masterfully. Although, m. My
Steve:dad never had the bank account CC would. Would
Steve:require.
Leif:Yeah.
Steve:And he retired, making decent money as an
Steve:architect and lived in, like. He built a home for
Steve:like 3 or 400,000 and then was estimated for like
Steve:1.6. I don't know how much he actually sold it
Steve:for, but it was like this beautiful house on the
Steve:Admiral Sound in North Carolina. So nice.
Leif:Serena finds Ben, and the two mutually apologize
Leif:for their respective wrongs. And then they break
Leif:up.
Steve:Sweet. I was good with this one with, uh. But,
Steve:like, here's a big difference, though. He dumped
Steve:Serena. Serena usually does the dumping. Serena
Steve:usually gets what she wants, then realizes it's
Steve:not what she wants and breaks up with them. M. She
Steve:did it with Colin. She did it with Nate. She did
Steve:it with Aaron. She did it. She did not do it with
Steve:Gabriel, but Gabriel was scamming her. But most of
Steve:the time, Serena is the one who's like, no, no,
Steve:this isn't what I actually want. Sorry. Goodbye.
Steve:And now here it's Ben who's doing it, which I can
Steve:only imagine Serena is just there is that part of
Steve:Serena who moves on quick. But I can only imagine
Steve:her now being like, oh, now I'm so sad that Ben's
Steve:gone, which will annoy me. But now also, of
Steve:course, she's going to try to make a move back at
Steve:Dan and. Well, we'll get to. We'll get to all of
Steve:this at the end of the episode.
Leif:In predictions, Russell reveals that Bart killed
Leif:Reina's mother in the arson incident. We Learned
Leif:about all the way back in season two. The security
Leif:guard died while going back in to save her.
Steve:Da, da, da. Uh, yeah.
Leif:Is this the real truth now?
Steve:Yeah. Uh, I mean, who knows? Who knows?
Leif:Or this another fake out?
Steve:Because. Because Raina was all like, you know, my
Steve:mom left when I was a kid. And then he's sitting
Steve:here like, nobody knows. Not even Reina knows what
Steve:happened to her mom. Why? Why doesn't she know?
Steve:Why wouldn't you say, oh, yeah, this guy killed
Steve:your mom, and I did nothing about it. You know,
Steve:why? Like, why didn't you do something about it,
Steve:Russell?
Leif:I let him bully me out of New York.
Steve:Yeah. I let him kill my wife and bully me out of
Steve:New York. Russell, like, you kind of suck here.
Steve:And all of this. It's like, I'm going to dismantle
Steve:his empire. No, you're going to dismantle his
Steve:kid's empire. And his kid didn't do shit to you.
Steve:And the kid will be the first person to tell you
Steve:that his dad's kind of a piece of shit, but he
Steve:loves him. Kind of like how your kid feels about
Steve:you right now.
Leif:Dan and Blair are at the bar and realize they will
Leif:need to be there for Serena, Eric, and Lily and
Leif:mutually agree to a friend breakup.
Steve:Yeah, because, you know, it's not a good time to
Steve:be friends right now with everything. They're
Steve:going to need their friends, and they. Dan and
Steve:Blair. Or Dan Coma Blair, if it's in a list. But
Steve:why would you ever do that? Because they have
Steve:absolutely nothing in common.
Leif:So did you believe this?
Steve:Absolutely not. Not for a goddamn second. No.
Leif:A devastated Chuck stumbles down the stairs and
Leif:tells Serena to shut the party down.
Steve:All of this.
Leif:Oh, Chuck. So dramatic.
Steve:So dramatic. So dramatic. Dramatic was Batman.
Steve:It's the empire of the Sun. Christian Bale. Where
Steve:is she? Shut it down.
Leif:Uh, it goes to the final commercial without a
Leif:Gossip Girl blast, but we come back for the
Leif:epilogue. Lily and Ben are meeting with the DA who
Leif:lets bed know that Lily insisted that his record
Leif:be expunged.
Steve:She had one demand.
Leif:Really?
Steve:She's making demands. She's making demands when
Steve:she's the one that's. Oh, she's making the demand
Steve:for you guys to do the right thing that would
Steve:happen anyway in the first place because she's
Steve:coming into admitting that everything was wrong.
Steve:So noble, Lily. So noble. But also in this. This
Steve:is where the. The DA Is like. She's like, do you
Steve:have kids? And my kids stopped smiling at me a
Steve:long time ago. And my Daughter told me she's proud
Steve:of me and, like, the way Kelly Rutherford just
Steve:delivered that whole thing, uh, it hit me. It hit
Steve:me in the feels, and I thought it was wonderful.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:I feel like she's probably channeling some real
Leif:life emotions there, because I think this is
Leif:during the period where she's kind of separated
Leif:from her kids.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Outside the office in an empty courthouse, Dr.
Leif:Daddy returns and lets Rufus know that Cece called
Leif:him in because it's time to circle the wagons.
Steve:I will say I did see his name in the opening. Uh,
Steve:in the opening. So when it was walking through,
Steve:and I was like, did you see that? And Robin was
Steve:like, no. What? And I'm like, don't worry about
Steve:it. So I knew he was popping up at some point,
Steve:but, you know, he pops up at the end, which means
Steve:he's here for a bit, at least an episode or two.
Steve:Um, we're getting Cece back, so we should
Steve:definitely, uh, reach back out to Caroline
Steve:Lagerfeldt.
Leif:Nate and Reina are playfully arguing while walking
Leif:back to the Empire and find Russell waiting for
Leif:Reyna outside. Nate goes inside so Rena can speak
Leif:with her father alone. Russell apologizes to tell
Leif:her that he's returning to Chicago and hopes that
Leif:someday she might forgive him.
Steve:I like this. I like that. He's like, okay, I lost.
Steve:I'm going back to Chicago. I'm good here. And now
Steve:she's like, no, I think I kind of like it here. I
Steve:kind of belong here. It's like, sure, you have a
Steve:trust fund and you can do whatever you want. I
Steve:guess our multi million dollar company doesn't
Steve:really. Multi billion dollar company doesn't
Steve:really need you involved that much. She's like
Steve:this high up person in this company, and now she's
Steve:like, oh, but I'm just gonna stay here now. Yep.
Steve:Uh, so. But I do like.
Leif:I mean, the company was moving to New York, right?
Leif:Yeah, that company's very, uh, mobile. Yeah.
Steve:Uh, but I liked their conversation at the end and
Steve:their little patch up and her staying here and her
Steve:staying in New York because I really liked her
Steve:addition to the cast, which I don't usually like
Steve:additions to the cast, so I've really liked her.
Leif:Chuck asks Serena if she. She has seen Blair.
Leif:Serena says she left a while ago. It probably went
Leif:home. Chuck is so angry, he can barely pour the
Leif:shots he is pounding down. He says Blair is the
Leif:only one that can understand what he's going
Leif:through and stumbles off to go find her.
Steve:No, you don't get it. He killed two people. So you
Steve:didn't know he killed somebody. Yeah. Like you're
Steve:worried that he lied to you, which you're just
Steve:taking Russell's word for it too. Like you're
Steve:just.
Leif:Although, uh, the first one was framed as an
Leif:accident at least like he killed someone. But like
Leif:I feel like Chuck would be the type of like. Yeah,
Leif:it was an accident though.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Yeah. This one is applied is kind of on purpose.
Leif:Yeah, yeah.
Steve:Which. Which also it's like, no, the security
Steve:guard was going in there to save her. It wasn't an
Steve:accident. It's like what did he have her tied up
Steve:in the boiler room? Like, was it an intentional.
Leif:Very elaborate way to kill someone.
Steve:Yes.
Leif:Even Barbass.
Steve:Yeah. Although Heather's. Have you ever, uh, you
Steve:know the movie Heather's.
Leif:And that movie is incredibly over the top.
Steve:But it is how his dad killed people.
Leif:Blair walks into the foyer to find Blair waiting.
Leif:Or uh, find Dan waiting for her. Dan is worried
Leif:that there is another reason why they had they'd
Leif:been sneaking around. Rufus's earlier advice has
Leif:clearly gotten to inside his head. As they
Leif:continue to banter, Dan inches closer to Blair and
Leif:eventually puts his hand on her shoulder. He
Leif:suggests just one kiss to make sure there isn't
Leif:something more between them. Blair agrees, but Dan
Leif:hesitates before Blair pulls him in for a freeze
Leif:frame kiss.
Steve:Loved it. I got the When Harry Met Sally here too.
Steve:Because this is. Because this is again taken right
Steve:from When Harry Met Sally. The whole like, we
Steve:won't know. We need to know. And we won't know
Steve:unless we do.
Leif:Yeah.
Steve:So I'm hoping that next episode we end up in Cat's
Steve:deli.
Leif:And Gossip Girl ends the episode with this. The
Leif:question of whether we can fight fate will always
Leif:remain a mystery. But the bigger question is what
Leif:happens when we stop fighting it. Xo. Xo. Um.
Leif:Gossip Girl.
Steve:Yeah. Yep. Loved that end. Love that scene. Love
Steve:the homage.
Leif:And goodbye Ben.
Steve:And goodbye Ben forever. Yes. I was hoping you
Steve:were gonna say that.
Leif:Uh, I was.
Steve:Goodbye.
Steve:See it again now.
Leif:Yes. Uh, but this was like sweeps week. So this
Leif:episode aired on February 28th. The next episode
Leif:that come six weeks later is April 18th. Wow. And
Leif:very painful. And this is kind of when I caught up
Leif:to the show and really jumped. It's the fandom. So
Leif:I expect to see my name pop up in some of these
Leif:episodes. Right. Soon.
Steve:This random comment here on Reddit says.
Leif:Uh, pre Reddit, but yeah, okay, but.
Steve:Really, I thought Reddit was 09. Uh, or even
Steve:earlier than that. I Think it was. It had to have
Steve:been 0809 because I think I was still married when
Steve:it first started.
Leif:But yeah, I'm mainly on the television pity or fan
Leif:forums.
Steve:Okay. Okay.
Leif:So what are your predictions?
Steve:Okay, my predictions. Okay, I'm going to. I've got
Steve:a wild one here. And it has to do with you saying.
Steve:And I don't even want to look at your face when I
Steve:say it just because I don't want you to give
Steve:anything because this is probably my most wild
Steve:thing. I don't think Bart Bass is dead. I don't
Steve:think Bart Bass is dead. And I think that we're
Steve:going to get some kind of beyond the grave pop up.
Steve:Now one thing that the, uh, where this thought
Steve:originated from may have absolutely nothing to do
Steve:with anything because I cannot remember when you
Steve:started saying and then we never saw them again.
Steve:But I don't remember you saying that when Bart
Steve:died. Of course then Bart did come back again for
Steve:uh, uh, you know, the.
Leif:Yeah, because I usually say when the actor's never
Leif:going to appear again.
Steve:Right, right.
Leif:Which the actor has been back.
Steve:That actor did come back again. So. So yes, there,
Steve:there is always the flashback. We. There is
Steve:something going to happen. Cathartic about the
Steve:Bart Chuck thing. So there's this thing tugging at
Steve:my head of like, where could they take this to
Steve:really fuck with Chuck for his dad to fake his
Steve:death like his mom did? I just think that I. First
Steve:of all, we are on a recycled hash after hash of
Steve:Chuck storylines. So bringing back another dead
Steve:parent, uh, there's just a few things that are
Steve:just tugging at my head about it. So I don't know
Steve:if I'm accurate. Again, like I said, this is
Steve:probably my most off the rails prediction that
Steve:I've had. But just some little things have just
Steve:tugged at me with this Russell Chuck through line.
Steve:Now my other big prediction is Chuck and Serena
Steve:are about to walk in on Dan and Blair. The Chuck
Steve:is going to find going right now looking for Blair
Steve:and Blair is with Dan and Serena is with Chuck. So
Steve:it does make sense for there to be a big mess
Steve:there and whether or not they get caught or
Steve:whether or not they sneak around for real. I think
Steve:that we're going to see them in a situationship
Steve:for a little bit and we'll just see how well they
Steve:hide it or if it's out in the, out in the open.
Steve:But I'm really curious as to how that plays out.
Steve:Are they gonna send Lily to jail? I don't know. I
Steve:don't Feel like they can do that for a long period
Steve:of time. I also feel like this is the kind of.
Steve:That someone like Lily has, uh, you know, timed
Steve:serve, you know, like time served. And like,
Steve:nobody really is gonna question.
Leif:How did she serve though, right?
Steve:No one's gonna question that. No one's asking
Steve:that. You know, I mean, she'll show her house
Steve:arrest, you know. Oh, that would be fantastic.
Steve:House arrest. She has to have parties at her house
Steve:all the time.
Leif:So I gotta give you two spoilers for. From a
Leif:casting perspective for next episode one. We're
Leif:finally gonna get to meet the mysterious blonde
Leif:that's from the Season 6 cover and is on the HBO
Leif:wallpaper there.
Steve:Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Leif:She finally appears. And also we get to finally
Leif:meet adult Carol.
Steve:Oh, the aunt. Oh. Cause we're circling the wagons.
Steve:That seems like a wagon that might get circled,
Steve:so. Oh, that's really cool because I've been.
Steve:Cause I was really. I really loved Ritter. Uh,
Steve:Kirsten Ritter's performance earlier, I would.
Leif:Just say remember that feeling. Although you might
Leif:recognize the actress who plays Carol. She was on
Leif:Lost. I forget the character's name. She was like
Leif:one of the others.
Steve:Oh, okay.
Leif:Any other predictions?
Steve:Um, oh, uh, all kinds of drama with Rufus and
Steve:William and Cece, so I'm curious how that plays
Steve:out too. I, uh, did have another prediction. What
Steve:was it? My, my. I think I had a Ben based
Steve:prediction, but I was like, uh, but it was sort
Steve:of, uh, if he's not gone, something's going to
Steve:happen. But I kind of also had a feeling Ben was
Steve:gone after this one. The. The. The. After the
Steve:breakup. I do believe the other person that you
Steve:never said that about was Aaron Rose. So I do have
Steve:this stinking sneaking feeling that Aaron Rose is
Steve:showing up.
Leif:At technically Blair's stepbrother.
Steve:Yeah. Well, yeah.
Leif:I mean, he was a fairly major character in the
Leif:books. Although he was completely different in the
Leif:books.
Steve:Well, and you know, he is Blair's stepbrother,
Steve:which also makes him fair game for Blair in Gossip
Steve:Girl. Morality.
Leif:I think they did date in the books.
Steve:Oh, did they? Excellent. I was thinking about
Steve:reading at least the first book.
Leif:That was weird. Ghost in my kitchen.
Steve:Sounds like it. Doing dishes.
Leif:Well, thank you.
Steve:Uh, anything that happens in our house, especially
Steve:ghosts, are always what we go to if it is
Steve:something that we know one of us did. But don't
Steve:want to blame the other person because there's
Steve:only two of us. So if my shit got moved like m.
Steve:And I know I didn't move it. Uh, but it's like,
Steve:okay, ghosts. All right, I'm not, I'm not going to
Steve:blame Robin. I'm going to blame the ghosts for the
Steve:goddamn cleaning people.
Leif:On that note, let's get into segments this week in
Leif:fan. We jumped in the Wayback Machine and travel
Leif:to the Television without pity forums from 2011.
Leif:Hello there, Peabody. Here. And this is the
Leif:Wayback Machine for traveling through time.
Steve:And this is my boy, Sherman. Speak, Sherman.
Steve:Hello.
Leif:Good boy. Overall impression. They love the
Leif:episode.
Steve:Yeah, I like this episode. I thought it was a huge
Steve:step up from that run of just real shit episodes.
Leif:The last episode's good too.
Steve:Uh, right, yeah, that's what I'm saying. These
Steve:last two I liked.
Leif:Again, there is perfection other than being blue
Leif:balled by the freeze frame.
Steve:Yes. Yeah, word. That was how I felt. I was
Steve:actually expecting the walk in the Chuck Serena.
Steve:Like I was expecting the kiss to happen a little
Steve:longer and then for them to stop. And as they pull
Steve:away, there's the other two standing there like,
Steve:what the fuck is this?
Leif:So some of our younger listeners might not get
Leif:this reference because it was very of that time.
Leif:Vanessa was compared to the Microsoft paperclip
Leif:annoying even when it's giving useful info.
Steve:That, that is so fucking spot on. So spot on. God
Steve:damn it, Vanessa. You are clippy. You are clippy.
Leif:Go away, Chuck. No one cares about you.
Steve:Yeah. Can someone send Chuck to a back alley in
Steve:Prague? Only with someone who knows how to finish
Steve:the job.
Leif:They're disappointed about the long hiatus.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:And as usual, a lot of love for the Chuck and Lily
Leif:scenes.
Steve:Yeah, yeah, they're great. I love Chuck and Lily.
Leif:That is it for this week in fandom.
Steve:I almost, I almost think Chuck and Lily have the
Steve:most healthy relationship of anyone on the show
Steve:because they know at any given point the other
Steve:will sell them the fuck out and not think twice
Steve:about it and then come back the next day and be
Steve:like.
Leif:My B. I think Dan and Rufus have a fairly healthy
Leif:relationship.
Steve:Uh, yes. Yeah, yeah, I, I, I think that. But
Steve:theirs is built on trust and trust can be broken.
Steve:Lily and Chuck have no trust.
Leif:Let's get into episode grades. I went first last
Leif:week, so you get to go first this week.
Steve:I really enjoyed it. I felt like there were a few,
Steve:just a few weak points in plot devices that they
Steve:used. I'm going to go a B plus for the overall.
Leif:Yeah. So, uh, for me, I, I also liked it. The
Leif:writing was solid, the directing was good, acting
Leif:was good from pretty much everyone. Mhm. I think
Leif:maybe Raina Was a little bit weak with the
Leif:overreaction.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah.
Leif:I started out as a B, but then I remember Ben was
Leif:gone, so I bumped into a beat. In stockwatch. Who
Leif:do you got going up?
Steve:Well, I'm going to give it to Ben because he's got
Steve:his record expunged and he's free of these
Steve:psychotic people, so. And now he can go be
Steve:inappropriate elsewhere. Good. Uh, riddance.
Steve:You're disgusting. Get out of here. I am also. And
Steve:this one hurts. M going to give it to Vanessa for
Steve:doing the right thing, coming in and helping out
Steve:and giving some. I'm going to give it to Clippy.
Leif:Some useful information. Yeah.
Steve:For the useful information. Uh, Dare. Dan and
Steve:Blair are both going up. Obviously, I'm going to
Steve:give Nate and Raina both an up. Uh, Raina was. I
Steve:was on the fence because of, like, losing the
Steve:relationship with the dad. But I think that she's
Steve:in a step. She's in a really good place for her
Steve:with staying behind and being with Nate. So I'm
Steve:going to give both of them. And, um, I'm going to
Steve:give it to Rufus for good dadding. You know, he
Steve:was. He was a solid dad for Dan in this episode.
Steve:Oh, and De Rota. De Rota goes up for. For sure,
Steve:100%. Oh, and Chuck. Chuck. I know that Chuck is
Steve:all gloomy at the end and shit, but Chuck just got
Steve:fucking Bass Industries, so I'm gonna give it to
Steve:him for his literal stock leap. No matter how mad
Steve:he is about it. Get over it. Your dad killed
Steve:someone else. Like, yes, this person. And the only
Steve:reason that this one matters is cause you kind of
Steve:know their name. Like when it was just security
Steve:guard accident. You're cool, but it's so. Yeah,
Steve:don't. So I. I'm gonna give it to Chuck. Even
Steve:though he's spiraling, but he doesn't get it very
Steve:often. He goes down a lot for me.
Leif:I have similar list, but not exactly the same. I
Leif:had Dan and Blair because they had a very cute
Leif:episode and got to make out.
Steve:Yes.
Leif:Rufus and Dorota for being good, uh, foils for
Leif:them.
Steve:Yes.
Leif:I had Lily going up for finally coming clean and
Leif:take responsibility.
Steve:On the fence with Lily because I ended up giving.
Steve:I'm, um. Spoiler alert. I was going to give her
Steve:down, but I was so on the fence because, yeah, she
Steve:did the right thing, which is going to jail.
Leif:Is she, though?
Steve:Is she, though? Well, but for now, the question
Steve:mark.
Leif:But in her mind, that's worth it because her kids
Leif:smiled at her.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah.
Leif:And lucky I did have Ben going up because he got
Leif:his name cleared.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Even though he's still a creep.
Steve:He's a creep.
Leif:Um, well, guess that's not uncommon in the real
Leif:world.
Steve:Yep. Yep.
Leif:Uh, and also Vanessa, because, yeah, like you
Leif:said, she didn't do anything particularly
Leif:offensive and she was somewhat useful.
Steve:Yeah. Yes.
Leif:But, yeah, I did not have Reyna going up. And
Leif:Nate, I had as neutral because. And I'm thinking
Leif:about just changing neutral to going, Nate, Who do
Leif:you have going down?
Steve:So I am sending Lily down for going to. For. For
Steve:the. Because I feel like her literal stock would
Steve:be plummeting right now. Um, I'm. Oh, you know who
Steve:else I'm giving it up to? I'm sorry, but William,
Steve:for showing up and catching Rufus off guard. But
Steve:I'm going to give. So, yeah, I'm giving Lily the
Steve:down. I'm giving Russell the down. I'm giving
Steve:Ben's mom the down for not actually like, yeah,
Steve:she kind of got what she wanted. But fuck you,
Steve:you're kind of an asshole and lactose intolerant.
Leif:Mrs. M. Sharp.
Steve:Mrs. M. Sharp. I am going to. He was mentioned, so
Steve:I'm going to let Howie go down because he was
Steve:mentioned for getting his ass kicked. So I'm gonna
Steve:go ahead and send Howie down. I think that's it
Steve:for me.
Leif:Uh, for me. I had Russell going down because he
Leif:obviously lost the episode. Yeah, I had Reyna
Leif:going down because I thought losing her dad was a
Leif:bigger deal than starting. Just starting a
Leif:relationship with Nate.
Steve:See, I, I kind of felt like she didn't lose her
Steve:dad in the end, that she reconciled and became her
Steve:own person. It became independent from him. So
Steve:that. But I see what you're saying.
Leif:And I also had chuckling down because. Yeah, he's
Leif:spiraling. Yes.
Steve:Hard. I, I kind of. I. I kind of figured you
Steve:would. And I kind of figure that that's one of
Steve:those one up, one down things because. Yeah.
Leif:And I didn't have this originally, but speaking of
Leif:one off, one down. I'm gonna put William going
Leif:down because he was just a smug asshole and he
Leif:still hasn't suffered the consequences for his
Leif:shitty actions last year.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. No, he has not. Consequences don't
Steve:often happen to these people. Like real ones.
Leif:That's why I didn't give Lily down.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:So I gave Lily up.
Steve:Yeah. But here's the best outfits from the last
Steve:episode we see.
Leif:Who did you have for best outfit?
Steve:I was torn on this. I'm gonna give it to Blair.
Steve:Her that flower print dress. And it was even. It
Steve:was more the accessories, the necklace, the way
Steve:that it looked against the dress and with her
Steve:makeup the way it was. I, I was really on the
Steve:fence because I thought Lily's dress was also
Steve:pretty dope.
Leif:I also have the same dress. Um, it was a Dior
Leif:dress. And she's wearing. Did you notice the
Leif:little silver balls on her shoes?
Steve:No, I didn't.
Leif:There's little silver like puffy balls on the tips
Leif:of her shoes.
Steve:Oh, adorable. Yeah, I didn't even notice they're
Steve:black pumps.
Leif:That is it for segments. Do you have anything you
Leif:would like to plug this week?
Steve:Well, first of all, you should check out First
Steve:Farm to Fable, one of the most recent episodes. I
Steve:was a guest on there. We had Mike, uh, Ross on
Steve:here last year or two years ago. Yes, for season
Steve:two. And so I was on his show. Uh, we recorded it
Steve:the other day so it should come out in another
Steve:week or two, I think.
Leif:And what episode was that?
Steve:It was Upgrade Season 9, Episode 18. Although it
Steve:can if you're watching Smallville along with this
Steve:thing. It hulu, it's episode 18. Some streaming
Steve:platforms, it's different because they had two
Steve:episodes. Some of them have a two part episode
Steve:listed as one episode. Uh, yeah. So. And it was
Steve:fun. It was very much like, like Mike coming on
Steve:our show. I haven't watched Smallville, at least
Steve:not that far. And so was the big difference was
Steve:that I had seen the first three, four, four, uh,
Steve:and a half seasons of Smallville. So I had a
Steve:background and I could answer some of the things.
Steve:And it was also really interesting to watch
Steve:another WB show that. That was kind of a
Steve:predecessor to Gossip Girl that is also doing the.
Leif:Well, it's now running at that point. It's running
Leif:simultaneous with Gossip Girl on.
Steve:The c. On the cw.
Leif:Right.
Steve:Yeah. So. Because, uh, at that point I thought I
Steve:brought that up to Mike but he wasn't sure when it
Steve:switched. But yeah, so it was on the cw. So it
Steve:followed that same trope of I didn't need to watch
Steve:the last three episodes because they caught me up
Steve:in the dial. I watched the previously on. But the
Steve:dialogue in so many places. It's like, oh, well,
Steve:you've been out of the job from uh, uh, Spectre.
Steve:Is it? Who does she work for?
Leif:The Daily Planet?
Steve:No, no, no. The Tess worked for the adversary who
Steve:was working with Zod. Uh, she was worse.
Leif:She's the CEO of LexCorp.
Steve:But you. But there was something about Spectre.
Steve:There's Some kind of government agency that she
Steve:was, uh, fired. Checkmate. She was fired from
Steve:Checkmate Spec. That's right. Spectre is, uh,
Steve:James Bond, but she was fired from Checkmate. And
Steve:there were these weapon stashes all over the place
Steve:and Brian Austin Greene's appearance, like,
Steve:everything. I was just caught up everywhere I
Steve:needed to be. Uh, so it was like, yeah, that was
Steve:easy. It was fun. And I had a lot of fun talking
Steve:to Mike about the episode. So. Oh, and you can
Steve:find me on TikTok and Instagram Steve Marshon M M
Steve:A R C H I O N and go ahead and give me a follow
Steve:and see what I'm doing there.
Leif:Yeah, for me, I am going to plug season two of
Leif:Fallout. Um, I've seen the first episode and by
Leif:the time you've gotten this episode, you're
Leif:listening to this, it'll probably be two or three
Leif:episodes out by then. Yeah, really good show. Fun.
Steve:Season one was spectacular. So I'm really, I don't
Steve:know if I'm gonna watch it now. I tend to wait
Steve:until things are done so I can binge it.
Leif:See, I love. I've come back around to liking week
Leif:to week because then you can talk about the
Leif:episodes with people.
Steve:I get that.
Leif:And then think about what's coming next and
Leif:analyze it.
Steve:Yeah, my big problem. And I guess I also don't
Steve:have a lot of folks that I am talking to about
Steve:that about shows other than Robin.
Leif:That's what Reddit's for.
Steve:But, but yeah, I, I understand that. I just, I
Steve:struggle with it because I just want to sit down
Steve:and watch.
Leif:Uh, I mean, if it's there, I will.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:But I kind of prefer week to week.
Steve:Yeah, well, and, and this has been really
Steve:interesting for me doing this podcast and doing a
Steve:week to week podcast and watching this like I
Steve:would have had to when it came out, only with
Steve:things like not waiting six weeks.
Leif:This gap was painful. Yeah, it was painful.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:But yeah. So check out Fola. Uh, if you want to

Steve:week.
Leif:Uh, next week we will be back to talk about season
Leif:four, episode 18, the dare episode. Typically
Leif:traditionally this episode.
Steve:Yes.
Leif:Oh, yeah.
Steve:Cause that was also the play.
Leif:Yep. And also when they had their first scheme in
Leif:season one.
Steve:Oh, right. Cause that was a short season.
Leif:And in season three, it was the Dorota's wedding
Leif:where they had, like, several, like, very like,
Leif:touching scenes at the wedding.
Steve:Yeah, yeah.
Leif:And the episode description. So the episode is
Leif:titled the kids stay in the picture. And the
Leif:episode description reads, as Lily awaits the
Leif:consequences of her decision, William
Leif:Vanderwoodsen, CeCe and Lily's sister Carol come
Leif:into town to support her. Blair has an epiphany
Leif:about her future and grapples with the knowledge
Leif:of whom she is destined to be with.
Steve:Uh oh. Uh, oh. I mean, Blair, when you and Chuck
Steve:said that you're gonna come back together one day,
Steve:you knew that there was gonna be other people
Steve:along the way. So here's your other people. He's
Steve:had other people along the way. You have other
Steve:people, too.
Leif:Until next time. You know you love us.
Steve:Xoxo.
Steve:Every time you walk away or run away you take a
Steve:piece of me with you there Every time you walk
Steve:away or run away you take a piece of m me with you
Steve:there Every time you walk away or run away you
Steve:take a piece of m me with you there oh, it seems
Steve:I'm walking right to your door.
Steve:My heart's still resting looking for something
Steve:more.
Steve:Are you ever gonna see everything you mean to me?
Steve:I'm trying really hard to believe.
Steve:Every.
Steve:Time you walk away or run away you take a piece of
Steve:me with you there Every time you walk away or run
Steve:away you take a piece of me with you there Every
Steve:time you walk away or run away you take a piece of
Steve:me with you there Never feels right when I'm out
Steve:here on my own I left last night and it feels like
Steve:way too long are you ever gonna see ever?
Steve:Everything you mean to me I'm trying really hard
Steve:to believe every time you walk away or run away
Steve:you take a piece of meat with you there Every time
Steve:you walk away or run away you take a piece of me
Steve:with you there Every time you walk away or run
Steve:away you take a piece of me with you there.
Steve:Come.
Steve:Back to me smile and you'll make my life complete
Steve:Every time you walk away or run away you take a
Steve:piece of me with you there Every time you walk

Steve:time you walk away or run away you take a piece of
Steve:me with you there.
