If you've been desiring a sanctuary for your spirit, a place to go to tune out the distraction, negativity and doom and gloom so that you can tap into the deep power, the vibrancy and the potential you have inside, you're in the right place. Welcome to a changed mind.
All right, guys. I was recently speaking to a room full of high level entrepreneurs, over 178 and nine figure business owners. And one of the biggest challenges that they had, the question they asked me was, hey, how do I reconcile the reality that I'm living in right now, meaning the things I have to do on a day to day basis, with the vision that I have for my business and for my life? And this is one of the big challenges. How do we reconcile the fact that we're actually living in two realities simultaneously? You've got the things that you need to do today. You got to pay the bills, you got to show up for work, you got to run your business, whatever it is that you're doing. But you have a vision for something much greater. And a lot of times it feels like our current reality, meaning the present moment, starts to become an obstacle or a block to the future that we want. Like, I don't know if you can relate to this or not, but so many times throughout my journey, I mean, remember when I first got into recovery and I was like, I Just want to get past this struggle with my addiction and get into living a sober life. And the life that I had at the moment really started to become an adversary to what I wanted to create. Several times throughout the course of growing my business, it's like, okay, I've achieved some success that I wanted. It was a future vision that I had at one point in time in the past. But now I have a bigger vision for what I want to create in the future. And I got to get away from this present moment because it's getting in the way of what I actually want. And that tension creates a lot of discomfort. You know, I think Eckhart Tolle said something, and I'm paraphrasing it right now to something like, the great cosmic joke is that human beings are always want to get from where they are to where they want to be somewhere in the future. But the future doesn't actually exist. All that exists is the present, present moment. There's actually a lot of wisdom around what he's suggesting there. And so I want to break this down for you in a way that you can understand so that you can have full confidence that what you want to create, you will create, but actually be able to enjoy life as it's materializing and unfolding for you right now. So let's establish something from the beginning. All that exists is the present moment. Like this moment right here, right now, as you're listening to the podcast, that's all that actually exists. You can think about the past and have some interpretation of maybe what happened yesterday, but it's not here right now. You can hallucinate or imagine or visualize into the future, but it's not here right now. All that's here is the present moment. And when you actually experience what seems like the future, it's still gonna be the present moment. We never experience anything other than the present moment. And again yet we feel like the present moment is getting in the way. Like my current bank account is getting in the way of the million dollars and the financial freedom that I want. My current job and the things that I have to do today are getting in the way of maybe the business that I want to start and living a passionate, purpose driven life. So we live fractured. We actually don't ever spend or invest all of our energy into the present moment. If you'll notice this, while there's only the present moment and you're doing things in the present moment, like going to the gym or washing the dishes or doing something at work or having a conversation with your partner, you're not actually doing those things. You're fragmenting yourself across multiple dimensions. Because in those present moments, you're not fully present. You're thinking about the past, thinking about the future, or arguing with something that happened yesterday, worried about something that may or may not happen in the future. So if you think about these as dimensions, you're spreading yourself out very thin. And creation is all about focus. If you can bring all of your attention into the present moment, that's very powerful. And I'm going to explain to you why. When you are not fragmenting yourself and thinking about the future, thinking about the past, worried about something that's not actually happening right now, you bring something into the present moment which is your spirit, your soul, or your consciousness. You focus in the present moment, and that's what presence is. Presence is the bringing of your consciousness fully and focused into the present moment. You have active listening for someone that you're having a conversation with. You're paying full attention to the words that you're reading on a page. You're in the gym and you're feeling your body. You're having a truly in body somatic experience as you're training. You're not thinking about work while you're training. You're training while you're training. That's what presence is. But human beings are designed to find threats so that we can avoid them and survive. And so we're constantly fragmenting our focus and our attention. But an evolved human being, a whole human being, is someone who has developed the capacity, who's trained themselves to bring all of themselves into the only moment that ever exists, which is the now. And so it doesn't matter what you're doing right now. What's important is that you bring all of yourself to it. How do we negotiate the fact that there are some things we'd prefer not to do right now because we are more excited about our future? In other words, how do we determine what we should focus on as we're building our future? And my answer to this question is that you never need to figure out what you need to do to drive your future forward. All you have to do is work with the present moment. And when various aspects of your future are ready to be worked with, they will show up in the present moment. So I've had a lot of dreams and aspirations over the years. You know, there are a lot of different companies that I wanted to create, a lot of different ideas that I've had. You know, one of the ideas I had was to create a tokenized currency that can run all of my companies and that my community can participate in. That would be a utility currency that would give them access to tools, programs, events, deeper access to our community, and it would have value. And the idea was that members of our community could start exchanging some of their fiat currencies into this tokenized currency, and we would start to create our own community banking system away from the current traditional financial structure and economic model. And I was very excited about it. Now, one of the things I could have done was I could have started doing all the research around tokenization. I could have reached out to cryptocurrency experts and had conversations with them. And if I had ideas and inspiration, if I drew into my present moment from the field ideas and inspiration to do that, I would have done that. But I didn't draw any of that inspiration in. I just had the idea and said, well, that would be nice. That'd be pretty cool. And I told my wife at one point, I think we're going to create a new currency that's, like, going to be competitive with global currency. She's like, that's nice, babe. She entertains all of my ideas. She knows that they will germinate at the right time. And so about two and a half years later, you know, I'm going to my recovery meetings, my 12 step meetings. There was a guy in recovery who started following the show. He and I would grab coffee after a meeting. He was struggling with some things, so I was teaching him the principles that I teach on the show. And. And we developed a friendship. And he said, hey, you need to meet my friend. I said, okay, cool. Why? He said, I just think you guys would have a lot in common. So a few months later, his friend visits Puerto Rico, where I live. I end up sitting down, having a conversation with him, and he said, hey, our buddy told me all about what you're creating. You know, I think you would be perfect for creating a token, a cryptocurrency that could run across your entire network, that your community could use not only to get benefits of all the different things that you offer within your teachings and your courses and your programs and your books, and to go deeper into the community. But as an alternative, a stored value, something that could increase over time and hedge them against the inflation of the dollar. My future showed up in my present moment. One of the things that I've learned, and this was a big one for me last year, is patience according to God's will for me and God or my higher Power will let me know when it's time for me to move on something that's been in my future, because he'll bring it into the present moment, but I give him greater access to do that. I make myself more available for that. When I am living in the present moment, if I'm living in the present moment, it's energizing, it's focused, it's magnetic, it's resonant. And so what happens is you start to draw your future into your present moment. And let me be really clear here, most people are trying to pursue their future. But pursuing your future is, if you can imagine tying a stick on top of a donkey's head and putting a carrot at the end of the stick, where the carrot is always two feet in front of the donkey. The donkey's always moving forward a couple of feet, but the carrot is moving forward too. So the donkey never gets to the carrot. When you pursue or chase your future, your future is always ahead of you. But when you understand that all that exists is the present moment, and in knowing that, you disallow yourself from fragmenting across the different dimensions of imagination, or past or present, and you bring all of yourself into the present moment, you fuel the present moment, kind of imagine you create this energetic nucleus, which is your presence. It's your soul, it's your consciousness. And the beautiful thing is that when you do that and you experience challenges, but you're not in denial of the challenges. You're not saying, man, I'm so tired of this happening here that's showing up right now. I wish I could be over there in the future. Fragmenting yourself. You know that your future's coming, and you know it'll come according to the right time. And you bring all of yourself to the challenges that you have in the present moment. The challenges quickly transform into solutions. Why? Because your energy is there, and your energy is alchemical. It changes lead to gold. It changes problems to solutions. So the reason why problems come and they stick around is not because problems are meant to stick around. Problems are actually meant to come and to pass. That's what a problem is meant to do. A problem is meant to come into your life or a challenge. You're meant to learn from it, grow from it. And as soon as you get the teaching transforms into a solution or solution shows up, but that becomes accelerated through your presence. It becomes delayed by your fragmentation. And one of the biggest fragmentations we have is that as we start to gain an insight into a future that we want, we start trying to live in that future and then push towards that future, when in reality, we can only live in the present moment. And as we do, we bring our future into the present moment. And, you know, I mentioned this earlier in the episode, in the opening, this is why I think Jesus said, my yoke is easy. He's like, look, the system is easy. The system is loving. God is loving. Everything is taking taken care of. It's operated according and functions according to laws and rules. And one of the beautiful things is that you don't actually have to figure out the prioritization of what you focus on in your future. Like, oh, my God, what am I going to do today? I've got this idea. For me, for example, it's like, you know, I want to learn a martial art. I want to learn an energetic practice like qigong. I've got five different companies that I want to launch. I want to write three different books. I've got all these different activities that I want to engage in. It's like, yeah, but I woke up today on a Friday, and there are certain things in my day that have been on the way for a while. And so I'm going to bring my full presence to those things. Not hating on those things because they're not the other things that I just listed, but I'm going to bring my full presence to those things so that I can learn from them, so that they can be transformed, and so that I am focused here in the present moment so that I can receive what life has for me next in its divine prioritization as it brings aspects of my future into the present moment. And you say, well, but, Dave, don't I, like, need to do things? I'm not saying you don't do things every day. It's like you get up and you say, reporting for duty, sir. Reporting for duty, ma'. Am. What is it that I have to do today? And you'll also attract into your present moment ideas. Thoughts will be released from the field, and you will receive those thoughts. And they may be inspirations, inclinations, hunches, and you should pursue those. But notice that that's very different than Hustle and Grind, because Hustle and Grind is doing things that you don't want to do when you have an inspired thought and you take action on it, you reach out to someone, you research something, you go buy a book, you go to an event, whatever it is, or that's not a Hustle and Grind, is it? So I'm not saying don't take action. I'm in Consistent action. I try to put in a good 8 to 10 hours towards my mission and my work on a daily basis. And then I spend time with my family and I spend time on my health and some small hobbies that I have and working out and training and all those things I put in the work. But I'm working with what shows up in the present moment either. There are tasks, activities that are already here. Like this morning, I had some calls with some coaching clients. I spent some time designing the curriculum for our big annual event. As I'm making some changes to it, my marketing director asked me to take a look at some reports and give him some insights that I have. I'm doing those things, but I'm also receiving the next set of thoughts and ideas that I will joyfully pursue that start to materialize my future right here, right now, in the present moment. And so that keeps it really, really simple. You don't need to worry about the prioritization. People go, I don't know what to do next. I'm like, we'll do what shows up in the present moment. Well, but what if nothing's showing up? Well, then relax and pay attention to your thoughts until you have an inspiration. Because that's a thought. Showing up in the present moment. And you don't have to fill your present moment with stuff. Sometimes there's nothing to do. Go for a walk in nature, go meditate, go read a book, go grab coffee with a friend, go have a laugh like you're supposed to enjoy life. My yoke is easy. It's not my yoke as hustle and grind, but it becomes hustle and grind when we inappropriately believe that we need to get from where we are to some destination that doesn't actually exist called the future. And we have to figure it out. Your future will arrive here in the present moment according to its due time. It's important to understand because now you're only operating in one dimension. It's called now. That's all there is now. Now I'm recording an episode for you, you know, and I think one of the reasons why these episodes resonate so much with you and thank you for sharing it with me with all of your feedback, is because I'm present. Like, I can't be anywhere else but right here with you. Can you imagine if I was trying to have this conversation with you and bringing into this conversation some argument I had with someone earlier today or some fear or worry I have about tomorrow? Don't get me wrong, I bring arguments with me And I have fears and worries. I'm not perfectly present all the time. But one of the reasons why I love this show and it's so therapeutic for me, is like it forces me into the present moment. And you feel that presence. You tell me, Dave, I feel like you're talking to me. I feel like you're so authentic and vulnerable. And the way I'm able to take complex concepts and break them down into frameworks and ways that you can understand, that's where genius is. Your genius is in your presence. And we all have a different type of genius. Mine happens to be taking complex concepts, I guess, and breaking them down into simple frameworks. You have yours. And that genius becomes available, active, visible, when you're present. And so this becomes the practice. And the reason why I'm sharing this with you and why it's so important is because if you actually believe you have to get to your future, there's no way you can be present. If there's one takeaway from this episode that can transform your relationship with yourself and your relationship with reality, it's realizing there's no such thing as the future. Not in some sort of, you know, cliche, cutesy, new age way, but in a very practical way, by not only understanding that there is no future, but knowing that those things that you want that you think will occur in the future, they'll show up right here in the present moment. And you can support that by staying present. Think about it. What we're saying, we're saying staying present, stay right here. It's the only place. Everything else is an illusion. It's not functional, it's not practical, it's not helpful. All that exists is right here, right now. So right here, right now, we're at the end of the episode. And I hope it's been super valuable for you. I know it's been super valuable for me. Just like hearing myself articulate this wisdom. If you love the show, do me a favor.
