mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Hello, and welcome to Overtime Hockey Talk.
Speaker:I'm Mark Paul alongside Justin Baker.
Speaker:Justin, how's it going today?
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Good, Mark.
Speaker:Always looking good, apparently.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Oh, I just, I actually, before we started, I was down
Speaker:here and I had a cut off on, and I was like, Ooh, that's, that just looks weird.
Speaker:I could do it, but it just looks a little weird.
Speaker:I'm, you know, on this.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: like Mac from Always Sunny in Philadelphia,
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Yes.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:A hundred percent.
Speaker:I think on today's show, you know, playoffs are, we're almost to the
Speaker:end of round two, believe it or not.
Speaker:I mean, we've got some, game six is left to go here and, no series has been solved
Speaker:and that's pretty, pretty remarkable after seeing like three, nothing and
Speaker:three, one series leads for some of these teams, you would have thought that one
Speaker:of these series would have ended by now.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah.
Speaker:And especially like a lot of the first round series, I think there
Speaker:were a few of them that ended a little bit sooner than maybe we had hoped.
Speaker:So I think the NHL is getting their way when they, you know, in terms
Speaker:of marketing and ticket sales.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Yes.
Speaker:I suppose tonight is game five.
Speaker:Colorado, Dallas, there is a chance that we all don't, we don't go all
Speaker:the way to six games for every series.
Speaker:let's start with that series because it is tonight.
Speaker:maybe you're watching this, it's already over, but what are your
Speaker:thoughts so far on this series?
Speaker:we'll jump in particularly with, Valeriy Nechushkin and him
Speaker:being suspended for six months.
Speaker:But, before we jump into that, just your thoughts on this series.
Speaker:Dallas and Colorado.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah.
Speaker:To me, it's a clear lack of depth for Colorado.
Speaker:Obviously they're very top heavy from the forward position.
Speaker:And, you look at, you know, I mean, similar to the Edmonton series.
Speaker:They've got a lot of guys up front that are playing, you know, massive 20
Speaker:plus minutes from the forward group.
Speaker:And you know, when you look at Dallas, they're able to utilize Jamie, Ben,
Speaker:you know, Logan, Stan, COVID, all these guys on, you know, the second
Speaker:and third line that are contributing.
Speaker:And, And of course, we're getting good goaltending out of, you know, Ottinger,
Speaker:which is what I firmly expected.
Speaker:But for me, it's been a surprise to see the lack of depth from,
Speaker:you know, the forward group up front for Colorado right now.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Yeah.
Speaker:I mean, Dallas is really stacked and I think we knew that coming into these
Speaker:playoffs, I mean, they are one of the favorites to win the Stanley cup.
Speaker:They have been all year.
Speaker:And if there's one thing they have on Colorado, it certainly is.
Speaker:That depth, the fact that, you know, Hey, Tyler Sagan is down the lineup and you're
Speaker:like, Hey, maybe he can do something and he has made an impact on this series
Speaker:so far and he's been pretty darn good.
Speaker:And maybe the impact, like you're taking Joe Pavelski, who's not playing
Speaker:bad and you're pushing them down the lineup because you've got guys
Speaker:who can slot in ahead of them now.
Speaker:And that is huge.
Speaker:I mean, yeah, Pavelski, I get it.
Speaker:Like one assist.
Speaker:In these games or in 11 games, these playoffs he has yet to
Speaker:score, which is very unusual.
Speaker:but I got to think at some point he's going to, he'll pop
Speaker:out of the weeds somewhere.
Speaker:He'll get some dirty goal or in around the net, but I, this team is just.
Speaker:Stacked full of at the forward position and after the trade
Speaker:deadline, bring in Chris Tanav.
Speaker:I mean, there, if there was a missing piece for any team in the
Speaker:national hockey league, where.
Speaker:Like you drop that puzzle piece in and the whole puzzle rises
Speaker:in 3d and like turns into gold because you completed the puzzle.
Speaker:It may be Chris Tanneff.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah, farewell could be right.
Speaker:And if you had told me going into the playoffs here that, you know,
Speaker:you know, Rupe Hintz and Joe Pavelski and Matt Duchesne would not be even,
Speaker:you know, in your top five scorers on this team, I would have said,
Speaker:Dallas is done, forget about them.
Speaker:And you know, to be able to, again, to get that contribution from those guys
Speaker:lower in the lineup has been just so huge and Chris Tenev, like you said,
Speaker:is fitting like a glove in this lineup.
Speaker:he's allowing guys to slot in perfectly and not putting a
Speaker:lot of pressure on other guys.
Speaker:I mean, he's just been, he's been a beast out there.
Speaker:I've loved watching him.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: as, as far as the avalanche go, I mean,
Speaker:I think they're playing, you know, the way that we expect them to play.
Speaker:They're playing fast there and they're really keeping up with Dallas
Speaker:as far as playing really heavy.
Speaker:Like they've been thrown around their weight.
Speaker:I mean, it looks like Rupe Hintz is, is pretty banged up.
Speaker:He's not going to actually go tonight at all.
Speaker:And, I think Colorado has been able to, to at least attempt to match them.
Speaker:Like they don't look physically overwhelmed by the Dallas stars.
Speaker:Goaltending, I, Giorgiev just has not been able to make that extra save.
Speaker:And Jake Ottinger has, and that's been a huge difference.
Speaker:that's what it might come down to is, Hey, the goaltending on Dallas is
Speaker:just a little bit better right now.
Speaker:and it just is what it is.
Speaker:And that's kind of what we looked at Colorado and went, you know, you
Speaker:might not be able to win with your give like, yes, you won with Kemper.
Speaker:I think when Kemper was on the abs.
Speaker:he was much better and more highly touted than Georgiev ever has been.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Oh yeah.
Speaker:Without a
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Nevermind.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Sorry.
Speaker:Go ahead.
Speaker:Go ahead.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: no.
Speaker:I was just going to say, I think everybody looked at Kemper
Speaker:as a legit number one, right?
Speaker:There was no question about it.
Speaker:Where's Georgiev?
Speaker:I mean, yes, he's a number one, but that's out of necessity, right?
Speaker:They don't have anybody
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: I like a, an okay one, a, if you have someone else
Speaker:who's there and can play, which is fine in the regular season, but come playoff time,
Speaker:you know, he can, he has these moments where he just can't seem to handle it.
Speaker:but.
Speaker:Hey, Colorado is still in this.
Speaker:They're, I mean, they're down three, one, they had an awful beginning of game
Speaker:four, because they walk into that game and like they practiced that morning.
Speaker:Nutushkin is there and all is good.
Speaker:And then they get to the game essentially.
Speaker:And it's, Hey, by the way, he's not going to be here.
Speaker:And also he's going to be suspended.
Speaker:Hey, let's shift these, the, our lineup around because.
Speaker:Let's face it.
Speaker:He's a pretty darn important part of their lineup.
Speaker:And they came out in that first period and just looked like they were lost.
Speaker:we can all,
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: They were
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: yeah, we.
Speaker:Absolutely.
Speaker:We can all understand.
Speaker:And there's, you know, obviously Nechushkin, he needs help.
Speaker:And that is the number one thing here for any, anybody like you got to remember
Speaker:these guys are, they're human beings.
Speaker:He's not a piece of shit.
Speaker:there's kind of this attitude that like, he made his bed news.
Speaker:You know, like he's got a, he's got a problem.
Speaker:He has a disease and he's going to get help for it.
Speaker:And, Yeah, feel bad for the guy.
Speaker:You also feel for the abs who somebody who, you know, they're friends with,
Speaker:they've supported, they, I mean, this happened last year and they push through
Speaker:and you think that, oh, we supported them and therefore he should be better.
Speaker:It's not a, you know, I know it's Jack Johnson, he maybe made
Speaker:some remarks and that's fine.
Speaker:I just say, I mean, it has nothing to do with you.
Speaker:When it's someone else's problem is nothing to do with you.
Speaker:It's not because he doesn't like you.
Speaker:It's just, he's got a disease and he has to deal with it.
Speaker:And so I, it's one of those moments where you're like, you
Speaker:gotta be able to pull away.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:It's the playoffs.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:It's the Stanley cup.
Speaker:He's a human being.
Speaker:Got to worry about that first.
Speaker:And I think for the abs going into game six, it'll be much easier to deal with
Speaker:that than it was the very beginning of game five, where they looked pretty good.
Speaker:Completely lost
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah, I suspect Colorado is going to come out.
Speaker:I mean, full steam ahead firing, you know, for this next game.
Speaker:And it is unfortunate.
Speaker:But, you know, I mean, similar to, you know, I mean, coaches will
Speaker:always say this, but similar to losing a guy to injury, right?
Speaker:I mean, you just have to go next man up at this point And get it done.
Speaker:There's no excuses.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: normal playoff stuff in some cases.
Speaker:and to be Frank, he's missed a lot of time.
Speaker:He was in the player assistance program earlier in the year.
Speaker:He was last year.
Speaker:Like he has missed a lot of time.
Speaker:So this is not a team that's not adapted to playing without Nichushkin.
Speaker:Are they better with him when he's a hundred percent and he's there?
Speaker:Absolutely.
Speaker:I mean, he's got what?
Speaker:Nine goals in the playoff.
Speaker:I think he's.
Speaker:It leads, leads the playoffs
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: There's
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: and goals.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So it is a big loss.
Speaker:Can Colorado pull themselves out of the hole?
Speaker:I don't know.
Speaker:but if there's one team that AB is capable of pulling themselves out of this hole,
Speaker:it is probably the Colorado avalanche.
Speaker:but speaking of pulling themselves out of a hole, the Carolina hurricanes.
Speaker:They were down three, nothing.
Speaker:It's now three, two in this series, Rangers fans are praying to the
Speaker:Lord that they are not about to make history, feudal history.
Speaker:you know, Hey, everyone's kind of coming around here.
Speaker:Jake Gensel's coming around and, the Carolina hurricanes look the
Speaker:way that we thought they should.
Speaker:Do you think there's any chance they go win two more?
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: a little chance, but I think at
Speaker:some point Shesterkin's too good of a goaltender to let this happen.
Speaker:I think, you know, he's not going to lose four in a row.
Speaker:Let's be honest.
Speaker:And I think, you know, how crazy would it be?
Speaker:It cracks me up.
Speaker:I immediately thought about this when I saw the post, that Jacob Trubridge
Speaker:just won the Mark Messier award for
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Yes.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: And then they turn around and
Speaker:lose four straight in the series.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: All right.
Speaker:Let's go.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: of leader is that?
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: All on him.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: yeah, I can't see it.
Speaker:don't get me wrong if You know, if maybe they had a little bit more firepower,
Speaker:I mean, Jake Gensel has been fine and, you know, Andre Sveshnikov isn't scoring
Speaker:as many goals as maybe I had thought he wouldn't at this point in the playoffs.
Speaker:But, you know, Hey, I think if, if there's a team capable of doing
Speaker:it, I, Carol, Carolina is not one that I would count out, but I just
Speaker:don't, I just don't see it happening.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Okay.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I guess I would, I mean, obviously there's always a chance it is so
Speaker:hard to win that many games in a row.
Speaker:And, you know, you pour everything you have into game four and then
Speaker:into game five and the Rangers, I don't think we've seen.
Speaker:Their balls to the walls yet in this series, I think it's going
Speaker:to come in game six, that's going to be a darn hard game to win.
Speaker:If you're the Carolina hurricanes, because I think that's the Rangers are going to
Speaker:go and give you all they've got, because you don't want to go back to a game seven.
Speaker:that's just, it's embarrassing.
Speaker:And you don't want to have that pressure.
Speaker:Like you just go in and you win game six.
Speaker:And, That's what I think will happen.
Speaker:But I, am I hoping that Carolina makes history?
Speaker:sure.
Speaker:Cause it's fun to watch.
Speaker:I have no stake in the game.
Speaker:I'm always rooting for the crazy thing to happen, the history to be made.
Speaker:Remember those old NHL playoff commercials?
Speaker:It was like, what was it?
Speaker:Was it history?
Speaker:Something like history is made or, you know, like they would, it would be like
Speaker:somebody going in on a breakaway and it would slow down and it would be,
Speaker:you know, some iconic playoff thing.
Speaker:What the, fine nose.
Speaker:We'll put them on tick.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: account.
Speaker:I follow that.
Speaker:That'll play these old Stanley Cup commercials.
Speaker:It's
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Nice.
Speaker:yeah, we'll put that account into the description below.
Speaker:You can go check that out.
Speaker:You can send it to me later.
Speaker:Oilers Canucks, maybe the best series of the second round tied to two.
Speaker:it has been now maybe not in terms of.
Speaker:Pure offensive, just knock down the doors and go nuts.
Speaker:Tons of shots on goal for both teams in the same game.
Speaker:it has been certainly a fun game, tons of drama or a fun series,
Speaker:tons of drama and, the Oilers go.
Speaker:None other than Calvin Pickard in game four.
Speaker:And they win that game by setting up a fricking Chinese wall in front of him.
Speaker:I think they allowed 21 shots through that game and until, you know, late
Speaker:in the game, nobody could get anything through ultimately Oilers win with.
Speaker:You know, less than a minute left in that one.
Speaker:What are your thoughts on this series here?
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Dude, if you had told me Calvin
Speaker:Pickard was going to come into this one, I would have been like, cool.
Speaker:it's game four and they're done.
Speaker:They're down three to nothing.
Speaker:And that's why he's coming in.
Speaker:so you gotta give it to the coaching staff there in Edmonton.
Speaker:Cause man, it takes some big huevos to, to want to go from Stewart center to a guy
Speaker:who's played zero playoff games, in his
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Chris Knobloch said, head
Speaker:coach of the Edmonton Oilers.
Speaker:He said that it looked like Calvin Pickard had, I quote, played
Speaker:100 playoff games on the quote.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah.
Speaker:I mean, he looked good.
Speaker:And, but the bigger question for me in this series is where has
Speaker:Elias Pettersson been, right?
Speaker:He's been non existent.
Speaker:I mean, he was pretty non existent a lot in the first round series
Speaker:got called out by his coach.
Speaker:And then now this last presser, he gets called out again,
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: that's a lot of call outs in like a two week span
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: right?
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: for Rick docket.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: the big contract this season, right?
Speaker:He's, he wants to be the guy.
Speaker:And I kind of feel for him a little bit, because if you look at the lineup
Speaker:for Vancouver, I mean, right now you look at that, that top line with Suter,
Speaker:Miller and Besser, they're playing good.
Speaker:Playing some very good hockey, but then below that on their
Speaker:third line, they've got Dakota Johnson, who's putting up goals.
Speaker:Connor Garland and Elias Lindholm.
Speaker:All look very good, right?
Speaker:So you don't,
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Garland's been really good.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: yeah.
Speaker:And if I'm, you know, Rick Tockett, I don't want to break
Speaker:up either one of those lines.
Speaker:so who are you playing with Elias Pettersson?
Speaker:I mean, you've got McKay have and Sam Lafferty and that's really about it.
Speaker:So there's no big offensive weapon.
Speaker:They can throw in with him, I think right now.
Speaker:And you don't want to, again, break up those other two lines.
Speaker:It's all on him to generate some offense and, you know, maybe he needs somebody
Speaker:to play with, but, man, if he wants to take, you know, if he wants to take
Speaker:that big payday, he better produce
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: he already got the big payday.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: let's go.
Speaker:Let's see it.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker:I have to think there's a possibility that he's hurt, but honestly, at this stage
Speaker:of the game, I would guess that probably 75 percent of the league has something
Speaker:that is making them uncomfortable headed into a game and that just is what it is.
Speaker:It sucks when you're hurt.
Speaker:I mean, I've played through injuries, granted, not at the level that these
Speaker:guys are playing, but I've played through injuries where I have what looks like
Speaker:two kneecaps, or I have a huge cut through some part of my leg or my arm.
Speaker:Like I've, I have been in pain and played through it and played well, and you can.
Speaker:In some ways it's a mental thing.
Speaker:And you just, at this stage of the game, at this stage in these guys
Speaker:career, especially somebody who's been in the league for more than
Speaker:five years, you know, that you're going to have to play through pain.
Speaker:And so I just think it's not an excuse anymore.
Speaker:You got to do what you got to do.
Speaker:Like you look at Leon dry sidle a couple of years ago in the playoffs
Speaker:where he like basically had no legs and he might as well have been out there.
Speaker:Like the guy from Monty Python, like it's merely a, of.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:And he's got no legs just dangling around out there and
Speaker:he was still doing something.
Speaker:So we're going to have to go take Leon dry sidles face and put them on that guy.
Speaker:That'll be our.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: The black Knights always triumph.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: It's perfect.
Speaker:okay.
Speaker:Last, who did now that series is tied to two, probably the most
Speaker:like up in the air series, like it could really go either way.
Speaker:Where do you think we're going here in the best of five now?
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Whew.
Speaker:Uh, the best of three here to finish it off.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: You're best of three.
Speaker:Sorry.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Best my math.
Speaker:I was told that there wasn't going to be any,
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: You know what?
Speaker:I can't pick against.
Speaker:I mean, okay, head says Edmonton, but my heart wants Vancouver just because
Speaker:I, like you, I want to see some chaos.
Speaker:I've got no skin in the game.
Speaker:I'd love to see Vancouver pull this off.
Speaker:And, again, Like to see where, you know, you know, Connor McDavid is after the
Speaker:season, after losing again in the second round and not, you know, not getting
Speaker:to the finals and all this other stuff.
Speaker:So part of me kind of wants to see that,
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: I'm going to say this.
Speaker:I think that the Edmonton Oilers have paid some motherfucking dues.
Speaker:Like these guys.
Speaker:Have been through the ringer, especially dry sidle McDavid.
Speaker:And you know what?
Speaker:Hyman has not been in Edmonton that long, but he was in Toronto before this.
Speaker:so he basically went from a team that can't win in the first round to a team
Speaker:that can't win in the second round.
Speaker:And Edmonton reminds me a lot of the Colorado avalanche in
Speaker:2021, I guess, 2022, when.
Speaker:It was like, are the abs ever going to win in the second round?
Speaker:this team seems like they're good enough, but they always seem to run
Speaker:into that one team that stuffs them.
Speaker:And it's been Vegas before it's been, but here they are against
Speaker:Vancouver, a team that in my opinion, they should be able to beat.
Speaker:And they're going against a guy who is in the AHL for most of the season.
Speaker:and no, not to take anything away from she loves.
Speaker:He's been great.
Speaker:I think this is the oiler series to lose based on how Patterson's played.
Speaker:There's clearly some injuries there and they're getting frustrated.
Speaker:And I think this is the oiler series to lose.
Speaker:If they lose this one, it's bad, for Vancouver.
Speaker:This is just, this is all gravy.
Speaker:Nobody expected them to really even.
Speaker:Mate, like maybe make the playoffs, but like that would have been off.
Speaker:We could just make the playoffs.
Speaker:It'd be really great and fun.
Speaker:So here they are in the second round.
Speaker:they're two wins away from going to the conference finals.
Speaker:It would be awesome for Vancouver, but Edmonton is really the one that needs
Speaker:this and I would love to see McDavid in the finals, we got to see these.
Speaker:I don't really, I'll cheer for Vancouver in the next round.
Speaker:Probably.
Speaker:I don't know if they could be Dallas, I don't know if Edmonton
Speaker:could be Dallas either, but
Speaker:they're just pretty darn good.
Speaker:but I think Edmonton at least has the super high end where
Speaker:like truly anything can happen.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: I mean, so here's the thing you look at
Speaker:last year's numbers for the Stanley Cup final, right between Florida and Vegas.
Speaker:And they were very numbers, right?
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Are you talking about like audience views?
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah.
Speaker:The views, And yeah, getting a Canadian team in there would be huge.
Speaker:And, you know, if you're the NHL and if you're just a hockey fan in general.
Speaker:You want the best players to compete for the Stanley cup.
Speaker:So I would love to see McDavid get a shot at it.
Speaker:Now, whether it's this year or next year is a whole nother story.
Speaker:Cause again, I don't know if they've got enough depth to get past Dallas, but,
Speaker:the bigger concern I have for Edmonton, even if they get past this series is
Speaker:how long can you play guys like McDavid and dry settle 25, 30 minutes a night
Speaker:before they just run out of steam?
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Yeah, it's going to be tough.
Speaker:and that really is where you may want to win this series in six games.
Speaker:If you can, if you're going to have any hope and resting your guys.
Speaker:yeah, I think it'll be a, it'll be a fun next three games or two games.
Speaker:I'm hoping for seven, like just give me seven games of all
Speaker:these series, it'd be great.
Speaker:There really has been no, no passenger series, no series where
Speaker:you're like, this one's dumb.
Speaker:This is boring pass next.
Speaker:Like they've all been great.
Speaker:there's been some games where individual teams dominate, but really
Speaker:all the series as a whole, they've all at least been interesting.
Speaker:the Florida Panthers leading the Boston Bruins.
Speaker:Three, two.
Speaker:Now, what are the chances?
Speaker:The Boston Bruins blew a three, one lead last year in the first round of
Speaker:the Panthers almost did it to the Leafs in round one this year, and now they
Speaker:have a chance to do it to someone else.
Speaker:I eat the Florida Panthers in round two.
Speaker:And.
Speaker:I want to like, Swayman can do it.
Speaker:I think we all believe that Swayman can absolutely win a game.
Speaker:Can he go and win three in a row against the Mighty Panthers?
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah, that's the question mark, right?
Speaker:So Marshan, you don't know where he is, if he's going to be available.
Speaker:but regardless it's been all Swayman, right?
Speaker:Like you said, he's the reason they're in this.
Speaker:He's the reason they've.
Speaker:they've scratched out a couple games here, but, I think it's over.
Speaker:I don't think, you know, Barkoff and Kachuk and those guys are
Speaker:going to want to have to go seven.
Speaker:And, you know, it's just, they're going to, they're going to, they're
Speaker:going to end it pretty soon here.
Speaker:I think.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: yeah, I got it.
Speaker:I mean, hey, Swayman stole game one and he managed to steal game four, five.
Speaker:I don't know, stealing.
Speaker:It looks like the only way they're going to win is if he steals every game.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah.
Speaker:And
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: I just don't.
Speaker:All
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: that last goal, very controversial
Speaker:with the goaltender interference, I think Florida is going to be pissed.
Speaker:They're going to come out swinging hard.
Speaker:they're going to play very chippy.
Speaker:They're going to play very hard in front of Swayman and they're probably going to,
Speaker:they're Knock him around a little bit.
Speaker:So we'll see,
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: let's speaking of goaltender interference,
Speaker:let's go there for a second, because I don't remember a playoff where there were
Speaker:more goals that you went, I don't know if that's a goal or you're like, I think
Speaker:that one's going to be a goal and then it.
Speaker:Isn't or it is like in Sam Bennett's case at the tying goal.
Speaker:And there, there has just been numerous times where there's
Speaker:been a goaltender interference.
Speaker:It looks like maybe it shouldn't count and now it's counting.
Speaker:and, what are your thoughts on goaltender interference?
Speaker:Let's just take ourselves away from it all.
Speaker:You as a goaltender, how do you feel?
Speaker:what are you willing to put up with or what should these goalies be have to
Speaker:put up with and what is just not fair?
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: man, you know, it almost seems like we're
Speaker:getting to a point where we're going to get back to, I know you remember this
Speaker:very vividly, but 99 where it's like foot in the crease, like that's it.
Speaker:Like gold doesn't count kind of crap.
Speaker:you know, with Brett Hall and the Dallas stars and Dominic
Speaker:still haunts me to this day.
Speaker:But, to me literally, I, it's very subjective, right?
Speaker:So from a goaltender.
Speaker:point of view, right?
Speaker:The whole thing is, you know, was he able to make a save?
Speaker:Did the player interfere with his ability to make the save?
Speaker:And as a referee, how do you put yourself in the goalie's shoes?
Speaker:Because for me, again, it could be the simplest or the lightest of taps and
Speaker:it could, you know, throw me off just a little bit as far as, you know, when
Speaker:you're trying to move side to side, if you just get in there a little bit,
Speaker:you could really throw off that rhythm.
Speaker:and then again, you know, a lot of guys, goaltenders like myself, I use
Speaker:my stick very, what's the right way to put it, but I balance and use my, put
Speaker:a lot of weight on my stick sometimes.
Speaker:And so if you, for example, I noticed with Bobrovsky that last goal in
Speaker:the last game, he lost the stick.
Speaker:Would that throw a goaltender's rhythm off or his ability to move side to
Speaker:side and really make the save, right?
Speaker:And does it distract you, right?
Speaker:That interferes with your ability to make the save.
Speaker:And again, it becomes so subjective and the refs making that interpretation
Speaker:on what their ability to continually, to be able to make that save is.
Speaker:And you know, it's a very gray area.
Speaker:There's no black and white defined, like this is goaltender interference.
Speaker:This is not goaltender interference in the rule book.
Speaker:So that's the problem.
Speaker:And we just don't have enough consistency where it seems every single game, right?
Speaker:Where you're like, Oh yeah, that's absolutely goaltender interference.
Speaker:And then, like you said, boom, it's a goal.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Yeah, I actually.
Speaker:it's funny when it's not your team, you're a lot, it's very easy, I think, to go,
Speaker:I could see how that'd be like, there's a lot where, Hey, that should count.
Speaker:Let's be honest.
Speaker:The goal, like the one with Swayman where, Swayman was interfered with and
Speaker:essentially it was, Swayman isn't going to be able to make that save anyways,
Speaker:so we're not going to disallow the goal.
Speaker:That's the right call.
Speaker:if you can.
Speaker:Look at it and go, he was nowhere near making that safe.
Speaker:Like the puck was on its way in when he got interfered with it.
Speaker:I'm okay with that, but
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: rule doesn't state, would
Speaker:he be able to make the save?
Speaker:It says, does that interfere with his ability to make the save?
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: you could say that he wasn't
Speaker:going to make the save anyway.
Speaker:So therefore there was no, it wouldn't have mattered.
Speaker:There was no ability to make a save.
Speaker:He couldn't have made the save anyways.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: I agree with you, but it, again, it still
Speaker:doesn't go back to the fact that he would have had a chance to try and make a save.
Speaker:And in this case, it just.
Speaker:You know, yes, I completely agree with you.
Speaker:I don't think even if he wasn't interfere with he wouldn't have made the save.
Speaker:But again, it still impeded his ability to try and make the save.
Speaker:and ultimately that is what the rule book defines.
Speaker:But again, when you have refs interpreting their ability to make a save and now
Speaker:they're putting that spin on it, you know, would he have made the save anyways?
Speaker:Now you're making rules based upon that, which isn't even stipulated in that rule.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Yeah, there is a lot of gray for certain.
Speaker:There's a lot of gray.
Speaker:And you know, when I think about how the position began and how it's evolved, it
Speaker:used to be purely standing up like this.
Speaker:Nobody was going down into a butterfly.
Speaker:And so when you're standing up, there's a whole lot you can do to defend
Speaker:yourself, but when you're standing in the butterfly and your legs are like out
Speaker:here, like there is, I mean, anybody puts.
Speaker:Certain force on a certain, on your groin, you're going to get destroyed.
Speaker:So there's certain like disadvantages.
Speaker:Now, the way, I mean, goalies are so good, the butterfly style.
Speaker:It works really well.
Speaker:You have to go down, that's the way you're going to have to play.
Speaker:You can never place a standup goalie style anymore, but a lot of
Speaker:the rules are written for somebody standing up because when you're
Speaker:standing up, you can defend yourself.
Speaker:You can't defend yourself when you're in that butterfly.
Speaker:And it's almost like maybe the league hasn't fully caught up yet.
Speaker:Everything's sped up goalies change.
Speaker:And I know over the court, it says that this is over the course of
Speaker:30 years, everything's sped up.
Speaker:The goalies have changed their style and we still haven't
Speaker:really done a whole lot to go.
Speaker:You can't just, you can't touch the bully like that.
Speaker:There's only really let's face it, there's what, 15 good goalies in the
Speaker:NHL and the rest are just like mediocre and sometimes they're good, sometimes
Speaker:they're bad, some seasons they're good, some seasons they're garbage, there's
Speaker:not very many good goalies out there and I think that if the league did more
Speaker:to protect goalies and just went, you know what, no, you can't like, you can
Speaker:go to these areas, You bump that goalie.
Speaker:It's not going to be a goal more.
Speaker:Just that's how we're going to call it.
Speaker:I think there'd be a lot more consistency.
Speaker:I actually think that more people would want to play goal because they wouldn't.
Speaker:Be looking at that position going, great.
Speaker:I'm going to be absolutely demolished like on a regular basis.
Speaker:And I'm just going to have to hope that I don't tear something or rip something.
Speaker:I think as much as I hate the idea that you can't go in and body up in front of
Speaker:a goalie, like I don't have any problem if somebody's standing still, they body
Speaker:up in front of the net and your ass bumps into the goalie a little bit.
Speaker:I actually don't care about that.
Speaker:But when guys are going full speed.
Speaker:Into the net.
Speaker:I just think that you got to just go, Nope.
Speaker:We're not playing that way.
Speaker:The game's changed too much and I get it.
Speaker:It's exciting, but you want to make more people play goalie, make it less
Speaker:hard to get absolutely destroyed.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah.
Speaker:I agree with you.
Speaker:not destroying the goaltenders, but to me, we're in a league now where
Speaker:they're promoting scoring, right?
Speaker:That's what they want.
Speaker:So of course they're, I think they're going to, they're
Speaker:going to leave the gray areas.
Speaker:And I don't think we're going to see any rule changes until we have
Speaker:basically like an overtime game deciding or, you know, series deciding goal.
Speaker:Because of goaltender interference or, you know, maybe a game deciding
Speaker:goal in the Stanley Cup finals because of that sort of thing.
Speaker:you know, there's really not going to be a lot for the league to be like, you
Speaker:know, you know what, yeah, you screwed up a game, but you had four other
Speaker:chances to, to close out the series.
Speaker:So big whoop, you know?
Speaker:so in my opinion, I don't think because they want to promote scoring and
Speaker:they want to increase that, I think they're just going to let it fly.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Okay.
Speaker:all right, let's jump over to coaching openings in the league.
Speaker:we know that the New Jersey devils have been interviewing a lot of people.
Speaker:The Ottawa senators hired Travis green away from the devils
Speaker:as he was the interim there.
Speaker:St.
Speaker:Louis.
Speaker:Travis.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Has, signed their interim coach.
Speaker:I mean, there, there are lots of opening, you know, the Toronto Maple
Speaker:Leafs, they need a new head coach.
Speaker:I mean, we all know that's kind of the, I guess the marquee job
Speaker:that is available right now.
Speaker:the devil's still a great job.
Speaker:who wouldn't want to go.
Speaker:Living in New Jersey aside, who wouldn't want to coach that group?
Speaker:I mean, there's a lot of young, really good talent.
Speaker:They've just got Jake Allen.
Speaker:this is a team that I think has the potential to do some damage
Speaker:in the Eastern conference.
Speaker:There is also this Rod Brindamore up in the air, head coach, Carolina.
Speaker:He still has not been signed.
Speaker:He is a free agent at the end of the year.
Speaker:This is a, it's a, that's an ongoing thing.
Speaker:there are a lot of coaches that I think are, could be really great
Speaker:coaches to coach in Toronto.
Speaker:I mean, we all know, that Craig Brube is like kind of number one available.
Speaker:Do you, how do you feel about that?
Speaker:Craig Brube being the number one available head coach, would
Speaker:you want him coaching your team?
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: I wouldn't mind him coaching my team.
Speaker:Absolutely not.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: mind him.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: but you know what?
Speaker:I mean, if I'm a, if I'm a team, I'm, you know, don't get me wrong.
Speaker:I don't want to wait and miss out on a guy like Craig Berube
Speaker:because of something like this.
Speaker:But for me, I'm actually licking my chops at Rod Brendamore.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Right,
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: yeah, he's the guy that I
Speaker:want more than anything else.
Speaker:And I don't think anybody's come out, anything because I think they're just
Speaker:waiting for the series to get over.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: and I don't think you probably wouldn't be able to, it
Speaker:would probably be some kind of tampering.
Speaker:if the Leafs were like, we're very interested.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah.
Speaker:But here's the thing.
Speaker:Here's a scenario.
Speaker:I don't think many people thought of, you know, Like obviously, you know,
Speaker:Travis Green gets swooped up by Ottawa.
Speaker:And I think teams, you know, once Craig Rubick signs somewhere, you're going
Speaker:to see dominoes fall pretty quick, but what if they fall too quickly?
Speaker:And now Rod Bredemore, his only option is to go back to Carolina or bust like.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: That's true.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: suck
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: that is true.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: that whole FOMO thing, because
Speaker:again, I think, you know, right now we're hearing finalists, right?
Speaker:And in Seattle, I think Todd McClelland looks like their guy, maybe with Dan
Speaker:Bausma up there at the top of their list.
Speaker:And obviously Craig Berube and Dan and again, Todd
Speaker:McClelland in Toronto right now.
Speaker:But, yeah, I gotta think that, you know, eventually these coaches are going
Speaker:to start getting snagged up because again, you don't want to miss out.
Speaker:And, you know, if you're sitting around waiting for Rod Brenham, or what if
Speaker:they come back and win the series?
Speaker:And now it's a Two or three more weeks before you can talk to
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: and if Rod Brindamore comes back
Speaker:and they win the series, then I'm going to go ahead and say that.
Speaker:He's going to stay.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: You would
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: I thought that when they were down three Oh,
Speaker:if this was a sweep, I thought there was a chance that Carolina goes, you
Speaker:know what, we like you, but it's just we can't seem to get over the hump.
Speaker:So what makes us think that you're going to get over the hump next time?
Speaker:Like you've been here long enough.
Speaker:I mean, there's.
Speaker:There's a chance of that now, yes, Rod Brindamore, really good coach,
Speaker:really good regular season coach.
Speaker:A great system still hasn't won any, like he's never won a cup.
Speaker:Whereas Craig Berube of course has won a cup.
Speaker:although outside of that one miracle year, I don't know
Speaker:that he's won a playoff series.
Speaker:Or if he has, it's one is very few.
Speaker:So that, I mean, and that St.
Speaker:Louis blues team is that was their one hurrah.
Speaker:Uh, and it seems like he is probably the fit in Toronto as far as what they
Speaker:need, which is a coach who's going to come in, hold guys accountable,
Speaker:kind of be a little bit of a Dick Sheldon Keefe was a good coach.
Speaker:I think there's a chance he actually becomes a coach in New Jersey.
Speaker:I like, he would be a really good fit in New Jersey.
Speaker:I think wherever Sheldon Keefe goes, he's going to have more
Speaker:success than he did in Toronto.
Speaker:I think he's a good coach.
Speaker:I think he just the team and there, there was just a, he hit a
Speaker:wall and he needs a fresh start, but I think he's a good coach.
Speaker:I mean, wherever he goes, he's going to win.
Speaker:And, it's just a matter of how far they go in the playoffs, but he'll.
Speaker:Same ilk is like Bruce Boudreaux, like he's going to go somewhere.
Speaker:He's going to do really well.
Speaker:That team's going to be good at what they do.
Speaker:And you'll see how far they can go.
Speaker:Maybe they can't win in the playoffs, but he could definitely get a team,
Speaker:maybe dug out from under some spot, get them back into the playoffs, playing
Speaker:well in the regular season, whether he can do more than that, I don't know.
Speaker:But I think Craig Berube, he would definitely hold everybody
Speaker:accountable that is for sure.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah.
Speaker:And, you know, Craig Ruby, to answer your question, he did win in the second
Speaker:round or went to the second round and lost to the Colorado avalanche when they,
Speaker:you know, in 2021, or I'm sorry, 21, 22.
Speaker:But, yeah, hasn't, besides that Stanley Cup, that, that was really the
Speaker:only first round win he's ever had.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: And that was as an interim coach,
Speaker:you know, I think that he would bring the accountability necessary.
Speaker:He has won a Stanley cup.
Speaker:he's been effective.
Speaker:I don't necessarily, I think that it's more of a player personnel thing in St.
Speaker:Louis than it was a coaching job.
Speaker:I also, man, I just don't know what else would be out there for
Speaker:the Leafs that would really fit.
Speaker:Like you can't go from Sheldon Keefe and bring in someone else who is going
Speaker:to be nice and fluffy with these guys.
Speaker:Like you can't have a game seven speech again, telling guys to
Speaker:go out there and have some fun.
Speaker:No way, no, how
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: no.
Speaker:You, I mean, they need a veteran presence back there, I think.
Speaker:And
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: they need to have their
Speaker:asshole clinched a little bit.
Speaker:Like they need to be, you know, shouldn't be loose all the time.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: yeah.
Speaker:And you know what?
Speaker:I mean, again, whether that's Craig Berube or somebody else like Todd
Speaker:McClellan or, you know, again, Bruce Boudreaux or even Rod Brendamore, I
Speaker:think, you know, again, they need a veteran guy who's been around for a while.
Speaker:Now, you know, if you go with, if you go with somebody new, fresh, a fresh
Speaker:face, maybe an AHL coach, somebody who's got experience winning there.
Speaker:That's okay, but I still think they need, maybe, you know, you have an
Speaker:assistant like Bruce Boudreau come in and be like, like that assistant coach
Speaker:back there who's ready to take over or at least provide that guidance, right?
Speaker:Because, to me, I think they were definitely lacking that, that experience
Speaker:behind the bench and no, no offense to Sheldon Keith, but I think they,
Speaker:they needed a little something there again with accountability for sure.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Yeah.
Speaker:I think too, you're going to go out.
Speaker:Look, I'm just, at this point, I'm kind of assuming the Leafs
Speaker:are going to hire Craig Brubeck.
Speaker:I think the only coach that I would say from a pure coaching standpoint that I
Speaker:would want more would be Joel Quinville, which I don't think that's happening.
Speaker:what I've seen out there is that the Leafs don't want to deal
Speaker:with the PR Hit that they would experience hiring Joel Quinville.
Speaker:My guess is probably similar to like Mike Babcock going in, signing in Columbus.
Speaker:hopefully it doesn't turn out that way for Quinville, but he signed
Speaker:in Columbus because Columbus goes,
Speaker:we'll bring them in and he can do that in this small market.
Speaker:that's probably what Joel Quinville is going to have to do.
Speaker:He's going to either have to go somewhere and be an assistant.
Speaker:I wouldn't, that'd be interesting.
Speaker:What if you had Craig Brube and then Joel Quinville as an assistant?
Speaker:I
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: I wouldn't mind seeing that.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: don't know.
Speaker:That might be a pretty big power struggle.
Speaker:I'm not sure.
Speaker:I don't know how those two guys would handle that, but
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: we'll see.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: that's, I don't think that Toronto
Speaker:is going to go out and make this big splash, bring him in.
Speaker:I think from a coaching standpoint, I think he'd be absolutely perfect.
Speaker:Absolutely perfect.
Speaker:if he have ignored what he ignored, and it's just, yeah, that whole situation,
Speaker:I'm not going to touch it, but
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: You heard
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: I don't think that's Yeah.
Speaker:I think that one's a he's she's yeah.
Speaker:Some ladies suing the Chicago black Hawks for what?
Speaker:What a harassment or something like that.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: I want to say that happens on that
Speaker:happens probably more than you think.
Speaker:And it's just news because it's the black Hawks and not what a harassment or.
Speaker:I don't know why I'm way behind, you know, San Jose sharks or something like that.
Speaker:there is one other team that is, definitely looking for a coach would
Speaker:be the San Jose sharks, which I think are looking at totally different
Speaker:options because of where they are.
Speaker:They got the first overall pick in the entry draft and my guess is they
Speaker:go out and they're going to bring in somebody a little more green.
Speaker:To, to try and wrangle these kids in together and make something happen.
Speaker:I don't think they can have another year.
Speaker:Like they had this year.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: No, I don't think with who you're getting
Speaker:with that first overall pick, you're going to have another year like you did.
Speaker:You might finish, you know, to last, you know, you might have that third
Speaker:or fourth pick in the draft, I think.
Speaker:but yeah,
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Matt
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: not.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Macklin.
Speaker:Celebrity just is not as he's not as big as.
Speaker:But Dard or I think that's going to be, if there's something that makes it so that
Speaker:he's not as effective in his rookie year, it's going to be that he's a little bit
Speaker:smaller so that would be something that I'd be worried about, you know, do you
Speaker:want to bring them into that situation?
Speaker:I guess San Jose is a pretty like
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: But the nice thing is for San
Speaker:Jose, they've got Couture to play that number one spot and you can
Speaker:put Celebrini in that second line.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: If he comes back,
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: yeah, of
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: we'll see.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: if you're San Jose, I would still
Speaker:try to target another guy who could play that center position.
Speaker:That way you don't have to put that pressure on Celebrini to come in
Speaker:there and be the savior from day one.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: I would agree.
Speaker:It'll be, I mean, there are some decent pieces there and at least like high
Speaker:profile guys are still there that can, you can stick them on your third
Speaker:line and be okay for a little while.
Speaker:one other team that needs a head coach, the Winnipeg jets.
Speaker:And, definitely a less of a, I'll say desirable place to
Speaker:go and live during the year.
Speaker:you know, this is a good team.
Speaker:It's a team that defensively was very good.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:They couldn't keep up with Colorado avalanche.
Speaker:They need to make some tweaks, but I would think that this would
Speaker:be a decently appealing job.
Speaker:You know, if you're a head coach, your job isn't to go and pull
Speaker:this team out of the cellar.
Speaker:Your job is just to kind of propel them up a little bit.
Speaker:See if you can win a round or two.
Speaker:I, of course, the Stanley cup is your goal, but if you were to go in there and
Speaker:win a series, you would be, you'd be doing your job in Winnipeg cause they can't have
Speaker:been able to win a series, in a while.
Speaker:any thoughts on who may end up in Winnipeg as a head coach?
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: no, and I haven't really heard much.
Speaker:I know they're interviewing Craig Berube.
Speaker:I think they did yesterday.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Yeah, I think he's making the rounds,
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Yeah, of course.
Speaker:and I'm sure Todd McClellan and other guys have, or will get there as well.
Speaker:for me really, this is a wild card.
Speaker:I think whoever you bring in.
Speaker:To me, I want to bring in somebody who has experience with goaltenders,
Speaker:working with goaltenders, right?
Speaker:I mean, not that I think Alibuck needs any help.
Speaker:I think you need to not
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: who can manage him
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: manage him, but also find a way
Speaker:to, you know, if he does, you know, if he does tank like he did
Speaker:in the playoffs this year, right?
Speaker:You're able to coach him up and bring him back, you know,
Speaker:and say, Hey, you know what?
Speaker:we're gonna, you know, we're gonna, we're gonna tweak this about your game, or we're
Speaker:going to have you play this, or maybe we're going to give you a night off here.
Speaker:Find those little things a little bit of a goalie whisper
Speaker:if you want to call it that.
Speaker:But, you know, again, I mean, I look what, you know, Craig Berube, right?
Speaker:He had in St.
Speaker:Louis.
Speaker:Did not have anywhere near as good as goaltending and
Speaker:still managed to pull it off.
Speaker:So maybe a guy like that, you look at it and you say, Hey, you know what?
Speaker:he did more with a lot less
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: true.
Speaker:And I mean, you look at what Rick talk has done with Vancouver's goaltending,
Speaker:you know, Demco goes down and seemingly Casey Dismith and particular she
Speaker:loves, they haven't missed a beat.
Speaker:you've got Edmonton who decides to go with their backup goalie,
Speaker:Calvin Pickard and things work out.
Speaker:There, you got to have a pulse on your goaltending.
Speaker:And I think probably now more than ever, like maybe a, older coach where
Speaker:they went goalies, you figure it out.
Speaker:You guys are over there, but a newer coach going, Hey, a goalie is so important.
Speaker:And so is the management of that goalie.
Speaker:this isn't just, let's put Martin Brodeur in for 74 games this year.
Speaker:We only put them in when he needs a, when he like has diarrhea.
Speaker:It's they.
Speaker:Never took Broder out.
Speaker:I remember it was like Chris Terrari.
Speaker:I think played like six games one year as a backup.
Speaker:It's just crazy.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: And it's going to be even more challenging
Speaker:next year for Winnipeg too, because I think Lorraine Boussois played so well
Speaker:when he was in for 20 games that he's essentially priced himself out of Winnipeg
Speaker:because they're tied up against the cap.
Speaker:You know, Halibut's contract is eaten up a big chunk of it.
Speaker:And so you're going to have to go and get a guy for 1 million bucks.
Speaker:And.
Speaker:You know, I mean, it's going to take a guy who knows the goaltending position
Speaker:very well, or at least the intricacies of playing goal, because you want to go
Speaker:out and find those depth pieces in goal.
Speaker:for example, if you do have to play Calvin Picard, Pickard, or you have
Speaker:to go to Sheloffs, you know, you've got guys who can come in and fill in.
Speaker:And so maybe that might be a James Reimer, or maybe you can convince
Speaker:Cam Talbot to come and play backup, you know, on a one on one mill deal.
Speaker:I don't know.
Speaker:They're going to
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: All right.
Speaker:Yep, for sure.
Speaker:okay.
Speaker:that is our show.
Speaker:you know, still have second round.
Speaker:we'll definitely second round.
Speaker:We'll end and we'll do some kind of, conference final
Speaker:preview before those begin.
Speaker:And, until then you can find us on Tik TOK and I just search
Speaker:OT hockey talk on Tik TOK.
Speaker:I'll have the links in the description below.
Speaker:Find us on Instagram and you know, you can call Justin at.
Speaker:No, leave Justin a quick voicemail.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Wouldn't that be something?
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Just doxing you on here.
Speaker:I'm sure we'd, you'd just get so many calls, tons of them.
Speaker:give me who, what's the one team, most shocking team that
Speaker:will win in the second round.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: Ooh.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Who's going to surprise me,
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: most shocking is probably
Speaker:going to be Vancouver.
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: Vancouver.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:you got the Canucks.
Speaker:I'm going to go out on a limb here and I'm going to say that
Speaker:the Carolina hurricanes are going to bop off your New York Rangers.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: didn't you pick them for the second round?
Speaker:So I
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: I did.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: you
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: It did take them.
Speaker:I got to stick with them.
Speaker:justin--goalie-_1_05-15-2024_172023: But my
Speaker:mark-paul_1_05-15-2024_172010: They still have a chance.
Speaker:They still have a chance.
Speaker:And I mean, my girlfriend, I've got the Canadian teams I'm cheering,
Speaker:whoever comes out of that series, I'm cheering for, but I also really like
Speaker:Jim Nill and I'm rooting for Jim Nill.
Speaker:So I'm going to have a, I guess, my heart is torn over there because I'm definitely
Speaker:rooting for them in that series.
Speaker:And then as far as the Panthers and the Bruins go, either one of them can lose.
Speaker:Again, I'll be happy
Speaker:just out of spite.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:That is our show again.
Speaker:Find us on Tik TOK, Instagram, all those places.
Speaker:And until then enjoy hockey.
Speaker:And we will talk to you guys next time.
Speaker:And we will talk to you guys.
