Speaker:

Hey, everybody.

2

:

Welcome back to another edition

of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

Glad that you're back with us.

4

:

I'm still flying solo while

the youth are on their retreat.

5

:

And pastor rod is out there with them.

6

:

They do get back today though Saturday.

7

:

So be praying for safe, travel

for them on the way back home.

8

:

And I can't wait to hear what they have

learned about and what they have studied.

9

:

Um, exciting to, to, uh, to

think about how God's gonna use

10

:

that and continue to bear fruit.

11

:

Long after this weekend's down.

12

:

So pray for those things.

13

:

Continue to keep them in mind.

14

:

As you are thinking about them

throughout the day to day, maybe some

15

:

of your parents going to be picking

them up, make sure that you have

16

:

good conversations with the students.

17

:

Talk to them about, Hey, what,

what was your treat like?

18

:

What'd you learn about don't settle for

yes or no answers, but facilitate that

19

:

discussion, ask open-ended questions.

20

:

What was the best thing that

you learned about this weekend?

21

:

What changes do you want to make

as a result of this weekend?

22

:

Uh, what, what was the scripture passage

that pastor rod preached on this weekend?

23

:

Um, ask those kinds of questions.

24

:

How was your con your,

your small group time?

25

:

Prob and, and B take that active

interest in their lives, parents, as you.

26

:

Uh, interact with them

as they are coming home.

27

:

This, uh, this weekend from the retreat.

28

:

Uh, it is Saturday and we are

getting ready for church tomorrow.

29

:

And, uh, I believe it yesterday.

30

:

Uh, most of you received

probably an email in your inbox.

31

:

That is something that we're going

to start doing now, which is going

32

:

to give you an update and kind of a

forecast of the weekend, kind of a

33

:

snapshot of the weekend, sermon out a

little bit longer than what you will

34

:

find in the bulletin most weekends.

35

:

And then it's also going to

have two other things on that.

36

:

So it's going to be given a

snapshot of the weekend sermon.

37

:

That's going to come from me.

38

:

And then you're gonna have an

opportunity to download the bulletin.

39

:

And so the bulletin is going to

be available for you before you

40

:

even get to church on Sunday

digitally, if you want that.

41

:

And so that'll be available for you there.

42

:

And then it's also going to

have our link to our compass.

43

:

NTX weekend worship Spotify playlist.

44

:

And so that is updated every single week.

45

:

And it's updated with the set list

that we sing that weekend in worship.

46

:

And so you'll be able to click on that.

47

:

Listen to some of that.

48

:

Those songs before you get to

church on Sunday, make sure number

49

:

one, that you're familiar with

them and just ready to worship.

50

:

And so that the goal of this email,

that's going to go out on Fridays.

51

:

It's not an announcements email.

52

:

It's not, Hey, this is

what's coming up at compass.

53

:

This is all about our weekend service.

54

:

And it's all to facilitate and help

you get ready to worship on Sunday.

55

:

And so, uh, that will be hopefully in your

inbox by the time that you're listening

56

:

to this, that we'll have gotten there.

57

:

At some point on Friday.

58

:

And you will have that as

a resource moving forward.

59

:

As we continue to try to just improve

what we do here as a church, we want to

60

:

do everything that we do with excellence.

61

:

And this is a way that we're trying to

make that we can service just a little

62

:

bit more intentional, a little bit

better help you prepare to come in and

63

:

worship together on Sunday morning.

64

:

Well, let's get into our Bible reading for

the day we are in Genesis 38 through 40.

65

:

Genesis 38 through 40.

66

:

And in 38, we take a break from Joseph.

67

:

And, uh, what we take a break from

Joseph to focus on is not great.

68

:

I mentioned Rubin's not great.

69

:

Well here, just Judah.

70

:

And though Judah is going to

produce the line of Christ.

71

:

Um, Judah was not a stalwart

character in and of himself.

72

:

And we see that here.

73

:

In this situation.

74

:

And so Judah, uh, goes

in and takes a wife.

75

:

Uh, of Canaanite origin.

76

:

And that that's not a good thing.

77

:

And as a result, she, he has children

by her, including earlier and Onin.

78

:

Uh, and, and these proved to be wicked.

79

:

Children, wicked sons.

80

:

Um, and you have a situation here

with a young woman named Tamar

81

:

and, and earn his first born.

82

:

The first born of Judah takes

Tamar to be his wife and.

83

:

Or ends up dying.

84

:

And so then Onin is told, Hey, you

need to fulfill your obligations.

85

:

And this was part of the way

that, that the next of kin.

86

:

Worked during this time.

87

:

A person's align at lineage

was incredibly important.

88

:

And so the way it would work is

the brother of the deceased brother

89

:

would go into that man's wife.

90

:

And produce offspring to continue

the line, the name of his brother,

91

:

if his brother was not able

to have children yet by her.

92

:

So that's, what's being instructed

here, owning doesn't do this.

93

:

There's other details there.

94

:

And so Judah is going to be in the

wrong here because he sees that Earl

95

:

and Onin are both killed and, and, and

because of their wickedness, ultimately

96

:

this is God's judgment being raw.

97

:

And so Judah is hesitant.

98

:

Doesn't want to give.

99

:

His next son and that would

have been Shayla to her.

100

:

And so he says, why don't you wait.

101

:

And this was not according to custom.

102

:

This was not according to the law,

that the time this was wrong of Judah.

103

:

To do this.

104

:

And so, uh, Tamar is left to her

self to say, okay, how am I going to

105

:

perpetuate the line of my two husbands?

106

:

How am I going to perpetuate

and be cared for myself?

107

:

Because children would

care for their parents.

108

:

And so what she ends up doing

is, again, not justifiable.

109

:

I'm not trying to say what she did

was right, because it's not, but she

110

:

goes, and she deceives you to, uh,

acting like a prostitute and basically.

111

:

Uh, gets him to provide for her that

the air that she was due, that, that.

112

:

Judas son should've

provided for her in place.

113

:

And so it's a.

114

:

It's a messy scene.

115

:

The title of this chapter for me

is just bad, bad, bad, more bad.

116

:

And then at the very end good.

117

:

And the reason why at the very end

good is, uh, this whole messy situation

118

:

of the death, of the taking the wife

from the Canaanite woman and then the

119

:

death of earth, the death of Onin,

and then the deception by Tamar.

120

:

And then what Judah does with Tamar.

121

:

all results in the end, in something

that's not awful because this is

122

:

like I mentioned the line of Christ.

123

:

And so if you look all the way

down to verse 29, Uh, tomorrow

124

:

is going to give birth to twins.

125

:

And the one of the twins is a man

is going to become a man name Perez.

126

:

Okay.

127

:

Perez is the one that is going

to perpetuate the line of Christ.

128

:

So we talked about it yesterday,

even in the infighting in Joseph's

129

:

family, God is still doing things.

130

:

God is still in control.

131

:

God is still working.

132

:

Even here in the midst of all

of this badness in this evil,

133

:

in this wickedness, in this.

134

:

Uh, this immorality and chapter 38.

135

:

God is still working.

136

:

God is not going to be

bumped off of his, his will.

137

:

His plan is not going to be derailed.

138

:

By the sinfulness of mankind, but that's,

what's happening here in chapter 38.

139

:

This is a glimpse into, what's

going to be the line of Christ.

140

:

And, uh, Judah is the, the

head of the line of Christ.

141

:

The line of Judah, right, is

what Jesus is going to be called.

142

:

And this is a little bit of a scene

into how that line is perpetuated.

143

:

It's not pretty.

144

:

It is not pretty, but Perez is

going to be the one that's going

145

:

to perpetuate the line of Christ.

146

:

You can look at Matthew one three

to see that Matthew one, three.

147

:

Alright, Genesis 39.

148

:

Uh, then we shift back to Joseph.

149

:

All right.

150

:

So we're, we're back with Joseph.

151

:

Joseph finds himself in Potiphar's house.

152

:

Potiphar's the one that is, is, uh,

this Ishmaelite caravan had sold him to.

153

:

And so Pottipher had Joseph as a slave and

as an extension of the Abrahamic covenant,

154

:

because Joseph is one of the sons there in

that line, God blesses Pottipher for all

155

:

that he has, uh, for, for Joseph's sake.

156

:

And so anything that that is happening in

Potiphar's house seems to be going well.

157

:

And that leads Potter to say, Hey,

this seems to be as a result of this.

158

:

There's Israelite slave that I have.

159

:

So he promotes Joseph.

160

:

And this is going to be a

common theme in Joseph's life.

161

:

This promotion, God blessing him.

162

:

And at least his promotion.

163

:

And unfortunately it also leads to

his being noticed by Potiphar's wife.

164

:

Uh, Potiphar's wife begins to try to

seduce Joseph and she is pursuing him.

165

:

And, uh, in, in, in.

166

:

And wants to do all

kinds of wicked things.

167

:

And basically.

168

:

Um, Joseph continues to resist and

he resists to the point to the point

169

:

that she finally orchestrates a

situation wherein, um, she's going to

170

:

be able to be alone with him, and she

thinks that it'll work at that point.

171

:

Uh, Joseph's integrity remains intact.

172

:

Uh, that's the key word in

this chapter is integrity.

173

:

Joseph's integrity to

remain remains intact.

174

:

And she then humiliated and angry accuses

him of trying to force himself upon her.

175

:

And, uh, he is taken and

put in jail as a result.

176

:

And, uh, it's interesting here.

177

:

I have to imagine Potter for understood

the type of woman that he was married to.

178

:

Uh, because if this was.

179

:

Any other man, and this was

truly the situation that had

180

:

taken place that he had tried.

181

:

This, this Israelite slave had

tried to force himself upon.

182

:

This man's wife.

183

:

I don't think that Joseph

is living after this.

184

:

I think part of her has to save face.

185

:

I think part of her has to, uh,

defend his wife's character, even

186

:

though she's not worthy of it.

187

:

And so I think that's why Joseph

finds himself in prison and not dead.

188

:

Uh, that in God's obvious provision

and protection of him, but Joseph finds

189

:

himself in jail with really no opportunity

to think that he's getting out.

190

:

This is not the American jail,

uh, or American judiciary system.

191

:

He can't appeal to anyone he's

not getting out of this situation.

192

:

So while he's there, while he's in

prison, again, God's blessing him

193

:

and God blessing everything that,

that Joseph touches basically.

194

:

And so the jailer notices Joseph's

blessings again, because of what, because

195

:

of the Abrahamic covenant God's blessing

those that, that bless Joseph got his.

196

:

Is that, or that, that bless

him, that bless his people.

197

:

And so that's why things are going well.

198

:

So the jailer promotes Joseph

and even give some charges.

199

:

We're going to see here in the next

chapter, over a few of the inmates and.

200

:

Um, Yeah, this is just

an interesting chapter.

201

:

One thing of note that struck me this

time, reading through a story that I've

202

:

read multiple times, it's familiar to us.

203

:

Uh, is in verse 39.

204

:

A lot of times we think of David when we

think of David's sin against Bathsheba.

205

:

When David says in his prayer and Psalm

51, He says against you and you alone.

206

:

Have I sinned?

207

:

And we think of David as an example of

somebody who understood the gravity of our

208

:

sin being first and foremost against God.

209

:

But here Joseph

understands the same thing.

210

:

Joseph has speaking to Potiphar's

wife, as she's trying to seduce him.

211

:

And he says in verse nine, he is not

greater in his house than I am, nor

212

:

has he kept back anything from me,

except you, because you are his wife.

213

:

And we expect him to say,

how could I sin against him?

214

:

Just like you expect David

to say, how could I I've I've

215

:

sinned against vast Sheba.

216

:

I say, I've sinned against Uriah.

217

:

I've sinned against all of these people.

218

:

But instead David says

I've sinned against God.

219

:

Look at 39 9, Joseph says,

how then can I do this great

220

:

wickedness and sin against God?

221

:

Joseph's passion for his integrity

was connected to his relationship

222

:

with God that's who he was concerned.

223

:

About sending against not against a

part of her, even though that would

224

:

have been sitting against Pottipher,

but, but really he was saying, man,

225

:

I'm I don't want to sin against God.

226

:

So Joseph's integrity.

227

:

He's a commendable man, for sure.

228

:

In so many different ways.

229

:

Chapter 40 then, like I said, Joseph

has given charge over two of the

230

:

prisoners in particular, one being the

cup bearer, the other being the baker.

231

:

And they both have dreams and they

both tell the dreams to Joseph.

232

:

And one is favorable that for the cup

air, Joseph tells the cup bearer, you're

233

:

going to be restored to your position.

234

:

You're going to be.

235

:

I brought out of the prison and you're

going to be the King's cup air again.

236

:

And he says, remember me,

remember me when this happens

237

:

and sure enough, it, it happens.

238

:

He is promoted back to his position.

239

:

Although we're going to find out.

240

:

He doesn't remember Joseph.

241

:

Uh, and then the other

one here is the baker.

242

:

The baker kind of thinks, oh,

well, this guy's dream was good.

243

:

Well, what about my dream?

244

:

And he tells his dream to Joseph,

but for the baker, unfortunately,

245

:

things are not going to work out

in his favor in the same way.

246

:

Uh, Joseph says to the baker, you know

what, you're going to be executed.

247

:

Uh, actually things are not going

to go well for you and sure enough.

248

:

That's exactly what happens there.

249

:

And the tragic.

250

:

A note of.

251

:

Of chapter 40 is verse 23.

252

:

Yet the chief cup bearer did not

remember Joseph, but forgot him.

253

:

And in verse one of chapter 41,

which I know is tomorrow, but just

254

:

know it says after two whole years.

255

:

And so for two years, Joseph

is going to left, be left in

256

:

prison and, and forgotten.

257

:

Uh, not by God, but by the cup

bearer, God's going to remember

258

:

Joseph and we'll see what happens

there in the next chapter.

259

:

As we jump in there tomorrow.

260

:

But let me pray.

261

:

And then we'll be done with this

episode of the daily Bible podcast.

262

:

God, we are grateful that you are

sovereign even over the mess in life.

263

:

And so we want to trust you.

264

:

We want to be men and women of

integrity as Joseph was in chapter 39.

265

:

We want to be so passionate about

our godliness and our holiness.

266

:

Not.

267

:

Uh, for, for other reasons, but, but

ultimately, because it is first and

268

:

foremost about our relationship with you.

269

:

It's about our, our witness.

270

:

It's about our.

271

:

Uh, our intimacy with you and

sin interrupts and breaks and

272

:

Mars, all of those things.

273

:

And so we want to be holy people

because you are a holy God.

274

:

So help us Lord to consider the

gravity of our sin and to focus on

275

:

being men and women of integrity.

276

:

We pray as we ask this in Jesus name.

277

:

Amen.

278

:

R I'll keep her in your Bibles

tune in again tomorrow for another

279

:

edition of the daily Bible podcast.

280

:

Back.
