Speaker:

10 of Fabulous and Female.

Speaker:

Jane and I this week are talking about the big O overwhelm.

Speaker:

This is such a big topic for both Jane and I and we've experienced

Speaker:

it in so many different ways from really sort of big episodes of

Speaker:

overwhelm and just ongoing overwhelm.

Speaker:

We talk about this quite a lot.

Speaker:

So, Jane, what can you say would be your sort of biggest overwhelm,

Speaker:

state that you've ever been in?

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: I get overwhelmed quite easily.

Speaker:

As you know, Helen I've always got less.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: patients,

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: I know.

Speaker:

Oh, I'm overwhelmed.

Speaker:

That's hilarious.

Speaker:

Let's laugh about it.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Oh, we can either laugh or cry, can't we?

Speaker:

So, yeah, let's laugh.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: absolutely.

Speaker:

I do.

Speaker:

I do get overwhelmed very easily.

Speaker:

Um, and thankfully, I do have strategies in place that I know what I need to

Speaker:

do to get through and get over it.

Speaker:

When I look back over sort of suppose the last sort of 10, 12 years or so,

Speaker:

there's probably been a few episodes.

Speaker:

I've been, it's been like huge.

Speaker:

I suppose One of them was probably when I bought my last business

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Oh yeah.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: um, bought a business I had never

Speaker:

worked in before, so that was nice.

Speaker:

Um, decided to move

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: I love that.

Speaker:

No, that was nice.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Um, not only did I buy a business at

Speaker:

the same time as in like within the same week we moved height cuz we had to

Speaker:

move to an island to run the business.

Speaker:

So we were moving to a completely different location with people

Speaker:

that I didn't know and had the whole was he started life over.

Speaker:

Um, we had an 18 month old who.

Speaker:

Then had to go into childcare for the first time, cuz I'd had been

Speaker:

really lucky to have the time off.

Speaker:

Um, so that was getting him into childcare.

Speaker:

Cuz obviously that obviously pulls in your heartstrings when you put your child

Speaker:

into childcare first and they look at you and they cry and it's like, oh my god.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Oh, I dunno mind.

Speaker:

I was like, Okay.

Speaker:

Bye bye,

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: oh, I

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: I love I love you.

Speaker:

Bye.

Speaker:

Bye.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: I didn't feel bad leaving him.

Speaker:

It was more I was like, Oh my God, you're really upset.

Speaker:

Oh my God, I hate

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Yeah.

Speaker:

Oh yeah, of course.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Um, and then on top of it, obviously you

Speaker:

had to learn the business and, and as I started to learn it, I, in my head, went

Speaker:

to overdrive of, I want to do this and I want to do that, and then I need do this.

Speaker:

And I started to find lots of things in the business where I wanted to

Speaker:

fix, but I wanted to fix them there.

Speaker:

And then immediately I didn't wanna have to plan it because I'm not impatient and

Speaker:

I wanted everything fixed straight away.

Speaker:

So I think when you rolled all that in over the space of a few months

Speaker:

of everything happening, then.

Speaker:

That was a big part of overwhelm.

Speaker:

That was huge.

Speaker:

Where I was just like, Oh my God.

Speaker:

There was a lot of tearful moments at the breakfast table

Speaker:

going, What the hell am I doing?

Speaker:

What have we done?

Speaker:

What the heck is this?

Speaker:

This is just unbelievable.

Speaker:

It's a nightmare.

Speaker:

Um, but it wasn't a nightmare.

Speaker:

It was just I had to then find my ways to sort it out and go through it all.

Speaker:

And I think from.

Speaker:

Obviously I don't think anything's been as big as that.

Speaker:

I think my overwhelm now

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: That's pretty big though,

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: as

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: It's it's

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: I'm glad.

Speaker:

Yeah, I'm glad there's not another one like that.

Speaker:

I could, I've had my big overwhelm, so, um, I'd say neither.

Speaker:

They're smaller batches but more frequent.

Speaker:

Probably

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: again, we're laughing.

Speaker:

What are

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: I at that.

Speaker:

I dunno why I laugh at that happens

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: this, This must be one of your

Speaker:

strategies that actually overwhelm is okay, and you can laugh about it.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: do you know a, a funny thing actually

Speaker:

and you just, you say that, right?

Speaker:

So this used to happen in my, in the last business.

Speaker:

So with the girls in the office and stuff, there'd be like four and five of us there.

Speaker:

And they all used to know when I was going into that overwhelmed state.

Speaker:

Cause I would just start that sort of nervous, laughing.

Speaker:

I would start and they go, Oh no.

Speaker:

Oh no.

Speaker:

Geez, dear.

Speaker:

No nervous, laughing, oh my God.

Speaker:

Like

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: change.

Speaker:

You need a

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: And I just be like, Oh, well

Speaker:

there's sister doing that to me and this person that, And then I

Speaker:

just start this sort of laughing.

Speaker:

They'll be like, Oh God, here she goes, Okay, this isn't good.

Speaker:

So yeah, it must be, I must automatically go into laughter

Speaker:

when I go into it for a while.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Do you know why though?

Speaker:

A lot of people do that because it's, it's one of those things

Speaker:

that, you know, Consciously, Sorry.

Speaker:

Unconsciously, we just do, don't we?

Speaker:

We don't know.

Speaker:

That's the way of like, uh, expressing the, how we're feeling

Speaker:

sometimes is just by laughing.

Speaker:

And I just on that it's not really linked to overwhelm, but you know,

Speaker:

when some people find it when, there's been a loss in, in the family

Speaker:

or friend or something and, and.

Speaker:

You know, their way of dealing with it is actually by laughing and, and

Speaker:

giggling rather than the feeling of fear.

Speaker:

So, yes, it's interesting.

Speaker:

What, just out of interest, you know, like overwhelm, We

Speaker:

say it comes from, from things.

Speaker:

What are the, like the real feelings, like in the emotions

Speaker:

that you feel when you know you're going into an overwhelmed state?

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: I think the initial is

Speaker:

that sort of stress factor

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Mm.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Oh, I, it's like I can't, I can't

Speaker:

break everything down in my head.

Speaker:

and it's that way of, that I wouldn't even say I, it's not anxious.

Speaker:

It's more just that, that stress way of, I don't know how I'm going

Speaker:

to get to where I need to be.

Speaker:

And that worry and that constant, having that sort of constant panic

Speaker:

sometimes of all this stuff and I can't get it done and I need to do

Speaker:

it, and if I don't do it, this is gonna happen and that's gonna happen.

Speaker:

And it goes in that sort of panic mode where, and actually nothing gets done.

Speaker:

Obviously when you're gonna do

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Well, that's

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: gets done.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Yeah.

Speaker:

Nothing gets done when you're going too overwhelmed.

Speaker:

Is it?

Speaker:

Nothing.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: not at all.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: It's so interesting and

Speaker:

it's similar for me actually.

Speaker:

, it's that panic and you need to do everything now.

Speaker:

And your sort of mind goes into that massive overdrive.

Speaker:

Um, and if you don't do it now, you know, what are the consequences gonna be?

Speaker:

That's, that's for me, overwhelm is, is I always think of.

Speaker:

, what's not gonna happen?

Speaker:

So if I don't do it all now, you know, what are the, what

Speaker:

are the outcomes of that?

Speaker:

You know, what are the effects if I don't do it all now?

Speaker:

And that's something that really plays on my mind.

Speaker:

Um, yeah, it's, it's a massive thing.

Speaker:

Overwhelm, like, and it's funny because it's not funny.

Speaker:

It's not funny.

Speaker:

It's all I keep saying funny.

Speaker:

No, I'm gonna change the word overwhelm.

Speaker:

Just a funny, that funny thing that we do,

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: It happens, but.

Speaker:

, leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: yeah, so for me, like one of the biggest,

Speaker:

, like episodes or whatever you wanna call it, was I, when the girl, when my

Speaker:

twins were really young, and I was in that newborn mum stage, you know, we

Speaker:

were, Everyone knows this when they were born, they were, we were born the week

Speaker:

before the pandemic, so we were in that.

Speaker:

Pandemic stage and there was the twins, you know, we were in a pandemic.

Speaker:

Um, there was just so much, so much going on.

Speaker:

And also I was starting my, this business now, my coaching business

Speaker:

and in my head very impatient me.

Speaker:

I was like, Right, all this needs to be done.

Speaker:

But I can't do it because the twins are not sleeping.

Speaker:

I'm not sleeping.

Speaker:

I'm tired.

Speaker:

My husband's going off to work.

Speaker:

There was all this stuff, like just stuff going on that I couldn't control.

Speaker:

And for me, not being in control equals overwhelm for me.

Speaker:

Like that's the one thing.

Speaker:

I think it's the lack of control really equals overwhelm.

Speaker:

Um, It's, it's funny that I keep saying funny.

Speaker:

It's funny, cuz now I do get overwhelmed.

Speaker:

Like, it's, it's a, I think it is a natural, a natural thing, isn't it?

Speaker:

You know, there's, there's still so much going on, but it's now like, how

Speaker:

you deal with it is, is so important.

Speaker:

So, so important.

Speaker:

What strategies have you got in place then, now, Jane, to help you with?

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Um, first thing I need to

Speaker:

do is I needed to stop.

Speaker:

Stop things.

Speaker:

Just stop everything and I need to get everything out of my head.

Speaker:

I am a real pen and paper person and I need to get it

Speaker:

out of my head and get a list.

Speaker:

And now I usually have two.

Speaker:

I've got a household list of things outside of work and I've

Speaker:

got my business list and I just need to get it all outta my head.

Speaker:

And sometimes, quite often I've got.

Speaker:

Probably like a lot of people, um, I have maybe two or three notebooks floating

Speaker:

around and I need to go into those and pull all the bits out because one thing

Speaker:

that causes me overwhelmed, which I really stopped doing now, is having so many

Speaker:

notebooks, putting so much stuff in, but then not, I don't do anything with it at

Speaker:

the time, and then have to try and find it, go back to it, remember that thing.

Speaker:

And so that's where I need to kind of keep everything now one place.

Speaker:

And one list.

Speaker:

And if I can get everything outta my head, that's a big, big starting

Speaker:

for me is getting all out of my

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Yeah.

Speaker:

And is

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: it, is what so much goes around.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Yeah.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: thought and another thought.

Speaker:

Um, and quite often, even if it, if there's a lot of stuff in my

Speaker:

head and I'm not near pen period, I far into my notes from my phone.

Speaker:

Cause I can email it to myself.

Speaker:

It's getting outta my head is the big thing for me.

Speaker:

Cuz otherwise I can't switch off from it.

Speaker:

I gotta take it out.

Speaker:

Take.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: it's, um, it's, So that's the

Speaker:

best way for you then is, is like

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: download it all.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: getting out of your head.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Again, do you ever talk to anyone about like, overwhelm?

Speaker:

Is anyone there to support you with it?

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: generally those are in any of the

Speaker:

coaching groups I'm in is Teddy, where, where it comes out, um, at home.

Speaker:

Yeah, certainly the house stuff would be, I'd say to my husband, I'd like,

Speaker:

We need to do this, this, and this.

Speaker:

I've gotta do this, this.

Speaker:

He'd be the one who's like, Like, what do I need to do it right now?

Speaker:

Do I need to do it right now?

Speaker:

And I'll be like, No, it's

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: No.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: that wants, it's me that

Speaker:

wants do it right now.

Speaker:

You know?

Speaker:

And he'll, you know, I be like, Well we need to do, we need to do that.

Speaker:

We need to get, And he'll be like, Well I'm not doing it now.

Speaker:

It's not gonna be great.

Speaker:

We don't have to do it.

Speaker:

We just, why do you need to do it?

Speaker:

Why does everything have to be done?

Speaker:

And I'm like, I think, cuz it's in my head.

Speaker:

That's why I need to get everything.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Right, what actually do I need to do?

Speaker:

What actually is gonna make any difference to my life if I do or

Speaker:

don't do it as prioritizing it from

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Absolutely prioritizing that.

Speaker:

That can be really difficult though for some people.

Speaker:

Just even that prioritizing things cuz everything, when you're in

Speaker:

that overwhelmed stage, you feel like everything is important.

Speaker:

Like, Everything's gotta be done now.

Speaker:

Um, so you'll know this, Jane, but one thing that I say is like, what's the

Speaker:

one thing, the one thing that you can do right now that's gonna help you in

Speaker:

whatever way you are in that overwhelm?

Speaker:

You know, if that's in your business, in your life, and just do that one thing.

Speaker:

And once you do that one thing, well that's done.

Speaker:

And then you can do the one next thing.

Speaker:

But it is difficult for people to even get to that stage.

Speaker:

And it is, it is so similar to me, James.

Speaker:

So, I always say to my husband, right, can he to do this, this, this,

Speaker:

this, and, and he's, he's so chilled.

Speaker:

He's the most like horizontal person.

Speaker:

he'll just look.

Speaker:

Sometimes he'll even answer me, He doesn't even answer.

Speaker:

And I'm like, You know what?

Speaker:

Okay, he's taken it in his head.

Speaker:

He won't do any of it cuz he'll know what's a, what's a priority and

Speaker:

he'll just get that done rather than all the other million things that,

Speaker:

um, that I think need to be done.

Speaker:

But also though isn't it interesting?

Speaker:

For me and for you, like we need to get it all out, and that really helps us.

Speaker:

But for like, for my husband James, he, he doesn't need to do that.

Speaker:

Like everyone is so different how they cope with things.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Yeah, definitely.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Yeah,

Speaker:

I know.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Whenever I know when I get things out

Speaker:

my head and yeah, one, I think it's one side, the head, it's done, not done the

Speaker:

way, but it's, it's in another place.

Speaker:

I don't have to think as much about it, but for me then if I, it's, there's a

Speaker:

visual side to it, to, if I have a list of stuff and I start to do them, I love

Speaker:

a big, bright highlighter and scrub it off the list because I can then see

Speaker:

in that list how much is being done.

Speaker:

And it's like this big o relief of I'm getting through

Speaker:

it, I'm getting through it.

Speaker:

It's just like, there's like a, a joy factor in, you know, writing that

Speaker:

off the list that you've done it.

Speaker:

But that's a visual thing.

Speaker:

I love to look at it and see the color and I have a box of highlights cause

Speaker:

I absolutely love just to see that

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: ticking it off.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And, and it goes to show though that also how much you have achieved and that's

Speaker:

really important to focus on what you have achieved rather than what you haven't.

Speaker:

Like for me, that is one of the strategies I got in place now is to focus on

Speaker:

all the things that I have achieved, rather the stuff that I haven't.

Speaker:

Cuz otherwise you focus on the negative.

Speaker:

That's all you're gonna remember, but once you start to think,

Speaker:

Oh, actually I've done X, Y, Z.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

I have actually done quite a bit.

Speaker:

So yeah, focusing on what you have done rather than you haven't, I think is really

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: And I think it's quite hard for people to

Speaker:

look back at what they have done because they see it so much still to be done.

Speaker:

And when you're running a business, there's always gonna be stuff, there's

Speaker:

always gonna be a continual list of things to do so people can, So people struggle to

Speaker:

look at, well, what have we done so far?

Speaker:

Rather than, it's always like, But I've still got all this.

Speaker:

And it's a constant add on to it.

Speaker:

But, um, if you say it's just by looking back at that, what you've.

Speaker:

Can really show you actually what, what am I getting stressed so much about?

Speaker:

I've done all less stuff.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: I know.

Speaker:

And that's the other thing, like with all these emotions that we get, you

Speaker:

know, what does overwhelm, what does stress, what does it actually bring you?

Speaker:

It, it brings you the stress levels.

Speaker:

It brings you all the negative.

Speaker:

Energy when actually, if you focus on what we have achieved, what does

Speaker:

that, how does that make you feel now?

Speaker:

Does that make you feel better?

Speaker:

Does, might me feel good?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's gonna give you that positive, you know, what's it called?

Speaker:

Indoor things, you know, give you that bit of that boost.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: I know.

Speaker:

The other thing is with stress and or overwhelm, I want to eat as well.

Speaker:

So , you know, it's that

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: go there with that.

Speaker:

It's so linked with so many people, isn't it?

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: totally.

Speaker:

And it's like for me it's that, oh, I have so much to do, I don't know

Speaker:

what to do, so I better eat something,

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Yeah.

Speaker:

It's avoiding.

Speaker:

It's avoiding, isn't it?

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: know, I'll eat something.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: what

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: And that naturally it has to be

Speaker:

something sweet because it's like, that's the one thing, Maybe it's those

Speaker:

endorphin things you're looking for.

Speaker:

That's what you need.

Speaker:

You need that fix and that boost.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Absolutely and I

Speaker:

completely agree with that.

Speaker:

For me it's like, I'll go make a cup of coffee cuz I'll just avoid it.

Speaker:

It on the flip side of that, I think it's a really good tip is actually,

Speaker:

you mentioned it earlier, is to actually, when you're in that state

Speaker:

of overwhelm, it's actually just stop what you're doing, change your state.

Speaker:

So by that, you know, Changing where you are.

Speaker:

If you are in your office or if in your kitchen, and if that particular

Speaker:

place is causing you overwhelm, leave it, you know, go outdoors.

Speaker:

Go to a different room, you know, go for a walk, do something else that's

Speaker:

gonna take you away from where that overwhelm is causing you that stress.

Speaker:

So, yeah, for me, I've just been into the kitchen now to make a cup, a cup of

Speaker:

coffee before, before we are chatting and, um, the, the girls are home today

Speaker:

and I just looked around and just gone.

Speaker:

Goodness.

Speaker:

It is like a bomb.

Speaker:

Hit it.

Speaker:

And my house was immaculate yesterday, immaculate.

Speaker:

And I'm like, Okay, I'm just gonna leave the kitchen because this

Speaker:

place is causing me too much stress.

Speaker:

Um, you know, it'll be clear by tonight when they go to bed, but it's

Speaker:

like, Oh yeah, just leave the place that's given you that overwhelm.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean sometimes like I know this morning coming in, cuz at the moment I'm working

Speaker:

in my bedroom because I've got, family standing in my office slash spare room.

Speaker:

And this morning before I could sit down to do anything.

Speaker:

I could see, I thought I need to tidy up in here, which I did.

Speaker:

And when I tid that, because that was just actually adding to my

Speaker:

like, Oh God, everything's a mess.

Speaker:

And there's stuff all about, See, when I cleared that, it

Speaker:

was like right, a clear eye.

Speaker:

Now I can sit down properly cuz otherwise I'd sit, try and do something.

Speaker:

I'd a corner of one eye.

Speaker:

I'd say, Well why those shoes all line?

Speaker:

And why is that?

Speaker:

And what's, There's no point.

Speaker:

I'm as well just taking 15.

Speaker:

In Claire put away and give myself a nice space to work in.

Speaker:

And that is with just sometimes those we simple things of giving yourself that

Speaker:

space and somewhere nice to go, Right, okay, I've got this somewhere nice.

Speaker:

Now I can kind of be a bit more organized, a bit more logical about what

Speaker:

I'm doing and thinking about as well.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: absolutely.

Speaker:

I, yeah, I'm, I'm exactly the same.

Speaker:

If something is really messy in my vision, that just adds

Speaker:

to my stress and my overwhelm.

Speaker:

So another tip, from me on what I do and my strategies on

Speaker:

overwhelm is actually focus on the solutions rather than the problems.

Speaker:

so if you start to continuously just look at.

Speaker:

All of your long to-do list or all the problems that are around you, the mess and

Speaker:

all that, It's actually, if you focus on that, that's all you're gonna remember.

Speaker:

So actually, if you focus on the solutions of what you can do, that really helps me.

Speaker:

, so this morning, classic example, our childcare just, they couldn't

Speaker:

come and look after the girls today.

Speaker:

Oh, it's like bloody hell.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

What can we do?

Speaker:

And you know what?

Speaker:

We just had to change our path slightly.

Speaker:

Go in different directions.

Speaker:

We've tag team, we're tagging team in the girls today cuz James is out to stay home.

Speaker:

And actually we just focus on the solution rather than the problem.

Speaker:

We've overcome it , we're dealing with it.

Speaker:

And it's absolutely fine.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Yeah.

Speaker:

The thing is, at the end of the day, there's nothing that can't be sorted.

Speaker:

There's nothing that can't be, you know, sorted, fixed, worked around.

Speaker:

It's always away around.

Speaker:

And you know, I even realized the other day on, early on this

Speaker:

week, I went away to an event.

Speaker:

And for me to go to an event, coming from an island, it's not just a jump in

Speaker:

your car, go for the day and come back.

Speaker:

I, That doesn't happen in my life at

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: you've literally gotta go on every mode

Speaker:

of transport just to get somewhere.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: I didn't realize, well, there had

Speaker:

been train strikes, but then they were suspended, but they couldn't get all

Speaker:

the trains back in the right place.

Speaker:

I didn't even think of this affecting me.

Speaker:

So I got off the ferry, no trains at all.

Speaker:

I had to get an R 15 minute bus to get to Kamar to then get a bus to

Speaker:

glass, a glass boat to Edinburgh.

Speaker:

So it took me over five hours journey, which should have taken me about three.

Speaker:

Um, and I was like, Oh my God.

Speaker:

Now I could have, I could have gone.

Speaker:

Do you know, I'm not doing this because this is just too much to do.

Speaker:

It's too much to do.

Speaker:

It's gonna be too much hustle and all that.

Speaker:

I thought, no, cause I can still get there, it's gonna take me a bit longer.

Speaker:

It was a bit of a crazy journey, I have to say, some of the buses, but

Speaker:

it was adventure and it was, um, yes, there was, I could tell a few tales

Speaker:

from a few bus journeys, however, but, the thing was if you let we,

Speaker:

things that stop you, we wouldn't do.

Speaker:

, you know, Cause I was, I could have let that totally overwhelm me and be like, Oh

Speaker:

my God, I can't get, And you'd get there.

Speaker:

I was gonna get there.

Speaker:

It was just gonna be longer.

Speaker:

So there's nothing, you know, so for me, I have to plan a lot.

Speaker:

If I'm going off, I have to get, you know, my mother-in-law were to help me

Speaker:

because the boys get out to school in the morning, gave us way to work early.

Speaker:

So there's a lot of logistics that have to go on, but it just, because it takes

Speaker:

a bit more planning, it shouldn't get in your way, you know, So, cuz quite.

Speaker:

We could look and go, Well, I've got, I have to get somebody for kids.

Speaker:

I've gotta get this, I've gotta get that.

Speaker:

All these things I have to do, So I, I can't make it work.

Speaker:

We can make it

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: You can.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And you do, you do.

Speaker:

And I'm sure there's still some levels of, you know, stress there in the background

Speaker:

thinking, is it all gonna piece together?

Speaker:

But it absolutely does.

Speaker:

Absolutely does.

Speaker:

I dunno how you do it, James, be fair.

Speaker:

You know, , just going on all those roads of transport.

Speaker:

The other thing I would say with that though, what an opportunity

Speaker:

just to actually do nothing and like, you know, just sit on your

Speaker:

phone and scroll if you wanted, or.

Speaker:

Read a book.

Speaker:

Listen to a podcast.

Speaker:

Oh, what a dream.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: it shouldn't have taken that way of to,

Speaker:

I should have easily got off the ferry, double train, the Glasgow train ed, boom.

Speaker:

Done.

Speaker:

Quick and easy, direct, you know, total direct.

Speaker:

But um, and I had all these lovely things planned cause I thought,

Speaker:

well, it's a good few hours.

Speaker:

I'm gonna add my lap, laptop charged.

Speaker:

I was, I have different things.

Speaker:

I wasn't gonna do work work, but I thought there's bits I wanna work on.

Speaker:

I just gonna put her way on, on the train and stuff

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Bit of admin.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: I can just put her away with.

Speaker:

Of course, none of that happened at.

Speaker:

and I, you know, I got the hotel.

Speaker:

I thought, I've not done this, I've not done that.

Speaker:

I thought, well, so what?

Speaker:

Nothing's gonna change cause I haven't done it.

Speaker:

Nothing.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: that's a really good way of focusing

Speaker:

on something that, you know, what is gonna materially happen if

Speaker:

you don't do something that day.

Speaker:

I always say, unless you are a life saving, you know, surgeon or, or

Speaker:

something like that, where you, you are needed in a certain space.

Speaker:

Nothing is gonna happen and it can stay until tomorrow

Speaker:

or the next day or next week.

Speaker:

Um, yeah.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Yeah.

Speaker:

There's nothing that, and I, it's like I always tell people, your business

Speaker:

will not fall apart just because you didn't do this one thing or you, you

Speaker:

took a day away to an event or whatever.

Speaker:

It doesn't fall apart at all.

Speaker:

Not at all.

Speaker:

Nope.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: people forget that.

Speaker:

Like when you're going to say you're going to a network and event, you know, and that

Speaker:

for you was three days really, wasn't it?

Speaker:

Away from home.

Speaker:

Your life your business as such.

Speaker:

But actually that is work.

Speaker:

People forget that, you know, think that, Oh yeah, but I'm not actually working.

Speaker:

Well, you are because you're trying to create, you know, um, leads or

Speaker:

connections communicating with people and they think then, Oh, I've lost,

Speaker:

you know, I've lost three days of work.

Speaker:

Well, you haven't.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: haven't, Not at

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Not at all.

Speaker:

Not at all.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: No.

Speaker:

It's just your, That's another way of growing your business

Speaker:

that's not sitting at a desk.

Speaker:

It's a very nice way to grow your business.

Speaker:

And I had a lovely day.

Speaker:

It was very nice.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Well, I know you, I saw John

Speaker:

Perseco, you had lovely lunch.

Speaker:

What's going on?

Speaker:

You dressed up.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: It was great.

Speaker:

I got my heels on, my wave went, so absolutely.

Speaker:

It's just a nice way to do business.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: It is.

Speaker:

It's a really nice way, you know.

Speaker:

So what would you say, Jane, the, the top tip for you now, just to sort of

Speaker:

wrap up how you deal with overwhelm now?

Speaker:

That would maybe help our audience?

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: For me, it's definitely get out, get

Speaker:

outta your head and break it down.

Speaker:

Just break it down into little small chunks and deal with the things

Speaker:

that are absolutely necessary to do.

Speaker:

and then deal with the rest cuz nothing's gonna fall apart cause you don't do

Speaker:

everything on your list that day.

Speaker:

It's a bit breaking it down for me is what I need to do.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Yeah.

Speaker:

Love that.

Speaker:

Love that.

Speaker:

And, and for me it's , definitely for me is changing my environment.

Speaker:

So if, if, for example, the kitchen is.

Speaker:

Given me massive overwhelm on my office.

Speaker:

I've got so much stuff that's going on, I will just literally leave that

Speaker:

environment, go away, you know, do something that brings me joy for

Speaker:

half an hour, go for a walk, listen to some music, do something that's

Speaker:

really nice and happy, and then I can come back to it with a fresh mind.

Speaker:

So that, that really helps for me is yeah, changing state or

Speaker:

changing the environment I'm in.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Oh, definitely.

Speaker:

I think there's, I think for anyone, it's just finding your

Speaker:

way that works for you as well.

Speaker:

You know, finding all the things, taking all the, tips and things that you can do.

Speaker:

And just do what works for you, because everyone'll be different and just,

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: And that's the thing cuz every,

Speaker:

everyone is so different, you know, and, and stuff, like, for me, like

Speaker:

getting things outta my head is really important, but I never, I never write

Speaker:

it down on a pen, on a, a pen and paper.

Speaker:

Um, I'll like talk it out.

Speaker:

I do occasionally, but for me, yeah, what works for you

Speaker:

isn't gonna always work for me.

Speaker:

So it is, yeah, definitely finding in your own way.

Speaker:

, and ultimately though, if you are in that state of when overwhelm gets, just

Speaker:

gets too much is please talk for somebody about it cuz there are loads of people out

Speaker:

there that will support you and listen.

Speaker:

Um, because it can become a much bigger thing

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: Yeah.

Speaker:

Definit.

Speaker:

. And even just by talking out some of the stuff, when you start

Speaker:

talking out, you start solving the problem in that conversation, even

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: totally do.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: of a sudden you've just answered your own

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: Answered your own

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: own problems, all in one go,

Speaker:

and you're like, Oh, right.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

You do.

Speaker:

You really do.

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: So I think that this episode

Speaker:

today actually ties in really nicely this week because it is,

Speaker:

National Stress Awareness Week.

Speaker:

So, and obviously overwhelmed can lead to stress and vice versa.

Speaker:

So, so yeah, I think it's just ties in very nicely this week.

Speaker:

So hopefully anyone listening who feels any overwhelm, urges, or anything

Speaker:

coming on, then do try some of the tips.

Speaker:

Find something that works for you and, uh, let's get out your

Speaker:

head or write it down or speak to somebody or move about the place.

Speaker:

Then do what, Do what works for

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--62f24825f1f4b50164e72a69--fabfemales: do what works for

Speaker:

leek-potato-overwhelm_recording-1_2022-11-10--t02-15-49pm--guest775274--jane: everything can be overcome

Speaker:

and everything can be.
