James Cridland:
Hello.
2
:
My name is james cridland I'm,
the editor of pod news and today
3
:
i'm going to give you a tip all
about writing a daily podcast
4
:
So my name is James Cridland.
5
:
I'm the editor of pod news, which is
a free daily newsletter, all about
6
:
podcasting and on demand in there are
jobs and news about the industry and
7
:
events about the industry and all of that.
8
:
Um, it comes out every single day in
podcast form, but also as a newsletter and
9
:
you can subscribe for free at pod news.
10
:
net.
11
:
I got into podcasting
a long, long time ago.
12
:
Um, in fact, in 2005, very early 2005,
I was working for a radio station in
13
:
London in the UK uh, called Virgin Radio.
14
:
And we were playing around with
what new technology could offer.
15
:
And I spotted this
thing called podcasting.
16
:
It wasn't even an Apple by that point.
17
:
And I thought, well, that
would be interesting.
18
:
So we worked out a way of producing
an automated podcast from our
19
:
breakfast show with Pete and Jeff.
20
:
And that started in March of 2005.
21
:
Uh, I think the press release
also included the word.
22
:
Podvertising, which is
possibly a bad plan.
23
:
Anyway, you're free to
use that if you wish.
24
:
And I've been involved in
podcasting really ever since
25
:
and started pod news in 2017.
26
:
One of the things I love about
podcasting is the fact that it's open.
27
:
Anyone can podcast and you can be
right next in the podcast players.
28
:
You can be right next to Joe Rogan.
29
:
You can be right next to the news agents.
30
:
You can be right next to
all manner of very large.
31
:
Shows, and then it's just
you in your spare room.
32
:
And that's absolutely cool.
33
:
The wonder of podcasting is that
you don't have to convince a
34
:
commissioner to take your idea on.
35
:
Uh, you don't have to convince, you
know, all manner of people to, you
36
:
know, buy your idea and put it on their
radio station or on their channel.
37
:
So the fact that podcasting is open
is a fantastic thing and allows.
38
:
Such a different amount of
voices on the air than you
39
:
would get from any other media.
40
:
So my big tip about particularly
about making a daily podcast, cause
41
:
I'm foolish enough to make a daily
podcast is to get your workflow right.
42
:
You do in your podcast, just make
it easy, straightforward, help you,
43
:
basically plan a podcast, work out what
the easiest way of doing something is
44
:
so that you don't end up working really
hard on something that frankly, not that
45
:
many people are going to hear initially.
46
:
So just make it a simple and
straightforward to put something together.
47
:
As you possibly can.
48
:
The reason why you'll find the pod
news daily podcast in your podcast
49
:
app, is purely because of workflow.
50
:
I needed to read out my newsletter
every single day, because if you read
51
:
it out, then you find more errors.
52
:
Uh, and I thought, well, I'm reading
out this newsletter every single day.
53
:
I might as well record it.
54
:
What's the worst that can happen there.
55
:
And so actually it's all
built in to the workflow.
56
:
So just have a look at every single thing.
57
:
Can you automate that?
58
:
Can you make that simpler?
59
:
Can you make that easier to do?
60
:
Because that will keep
you podcasting for longer.
61
:
You can find me at pod news.
62
:
net.
63
:
That's the daily newsletter
that I put together.
64
:
It's free as well.
65
:
And you can also find my
personal website at james.
66
:
cridland.
67
:
net, where you'll also find links
in the show notes and thank you
68
:
for listening to podcasting people.
