Valerie Hatcher:So grab your favorite beverage, turn up the volume, and let's get started.
Speaker B:Today we're celebrating the beauty of aging.
Speaker B:You know, society often paints a picture of aging that's not all that flattering, focused on the things that we lose rather than the things that we gain.
Speaker B:But the truth is, aging comes with so many gifts, and today I want to shine a light on those often overlooked blessings.
Speaker B:So whether you're feeling a little apprehensive about getting older or you're already loving where you are, let's dive into together as we explore 10 surprising benefits of aging gracefully.
Speaker B:I also have some actionable steps for you to start embracing these benefits in your own life.
Speaker B:So let's just jump right on in.
Speaker B:Number one, Confidence that comes from knowing yourself.
Speaker B:One of the biggest perks of getting older is the sheer confidence that comes with truly knowing who you are.
Speaker B:I remember being in my 20s and constantly second guessing myself, whether it was about my career, my relationships, or even my personal style.
Speaker B:Now in my 60s, I've come to realize that there's a beautiful certainty that grows within you.
Speaker B:You start to know exactly what you want and just as importantly, what you don't want.
Speaker B:This kind of self assurance is priceless.
Speaker B:It's like shedding all those layers of doubt and stepping fully into your own power.
Speaker B:Take some time today to write down three things that you love about yourself, things that you're confident about now that you weren't when you were younger.
Speaker B:And then keep this list somewhere where you can see it as a reminder of how far you've come.
Speaker B:Number two, it's letting go of the need for approval.
Speaker B:So another wonderful surprise about aging is letting go of the need for everyone's approval.
Speaker B:When I was younger, I found myself at times trying to make everyone happy, trying to fit into the expectations set by society, family, or even my own friends.
Speaker B:But as I've aged, I've learned to prioritize my own happiness.
Speaker B:There's something incredibly freeing about not needing everyone to agree with your choices.
Speaker B:It opens up room for authenticity, and that's a gift that I wouldn't trade for anything.
Speaker B:I remember when I first started my content creation journey, putting myself out there on social media, sharing photos, videos and my thoughts about life over 50.
Speaker B:Early on, there were comments from people that I know wondering what I was doing.
Speaker B:It was why are you?
Speaker B:Why are there so many pictures of you?
Speaker B:They'd ask.
Speaker B:And why does it seem like you're always on social?
Speaker B:And honestly, those questions stung.
Speaker B:At first, I started second guessing myself, wondering if maybe I was being too much, being too visible.
Speaker B:But deep down, I knew why I was doing it.
Speaker B:I wanted to share my story, to help other women see that life after 50 could be vibrant, exciting, and worth celebrating.
Speaker B:Letting go of the need for others approval allowed me to keep going, to be unapologetically visible.
Speaker B:And now, looking back, I see that stepping into that discomfort was one of the best decisions that I've ever made.
Speaker B:Every post, every picture, every video, every podcast episode is a testament to my courage to show up authentically and to celebrate this stage of life.
Speaker B:Here's an action step.
Speaker B:Think of one thing that you've wanted to do, but you've held back because of others opinions.
Speaker B:Whether it's a new haircut or a hobby or a bold choice, write it down and make a plan to do it.
Speaker B:Because your happiness matters.
Speaker B:Number three Deeper, more meaningful relationships.
Speaker B:So with age, our relationships change, and often they deepen in a way that's truly rewarding.
Speaker B:You start focusing more on quality rather than quantity.
Speaker B:I found that as I've grown older, the friendships that have lasted are the ones that really matter.
Speaker B:The ones that add value to your life.
Speaker B:And it's not just friendships.
Speaker B:Even family relationships evolve.
Speaker B:There's a depth that an understanding that wasn't there before.
Speaker B:It makes every moment together so much richer.
Speaker B:So here's what I want you to do.
Speaker B:Reach out to one of your deep, meaningful connections today.
Speaker B:Call or text them.
Speaker B:Just let them know how much they mean to you.
Speaker B:I recently did this to a friend whom I've known for 30 years.
Speaker B:But it had been a while since we checked in and I really missed hearing from her.
Speaker B:So I text her and we went back and forth for a long time, just kind of catching up.
Speaker B:But it's these connections that make life so incredibly worthwhile.
Speaker B:Number four the joy of saying no without Gift Guilt this one was a game changer for me, and I've mentioned it before.
Speaker B:One of the benefits of aging gracefully is that you finally learn how to say no and mean it without feeling guilty.
Speaker B:When you're younger, you often feel obligated to say yes to everything, whether it's a social invitation, extra work, or doing favors that just drain you.
Speaker B:But as you get older, you understand that your time and your energy are valuable.
Speaker B:Saying no becomes an act of self care.
Speaker B:And let me tell you, it feels so good.
Speaker B:So this week, practice saying no to one thing that doesn't serve you.
Speaker B:Maybe it's an invitation that you don't feel like attending, or an obligation that drains your energy.
Speaker B:Use your no as a way to say yes to yourself.
Speaker B:5.
Speaker B:Embracing your true style Another benefit that I've come to love is embracing my own style without apology.
Speaker B:I've really never been one to follow trends or to wear something just because everyone else was wearing it.
Speaker B:But as I've grown older, I felt an even greater sense of freedom to fully embrace what makes me feel good.
Speaker B:Whether it's rocking bold colors, comfortable fabrics, or embracing a natural look I dress for me, there's a deep confidence that comes with knowing that you're dressing for yourself, and it's empowering to celebrate your individuality through your style.
Speaker B:For the longest time, I believe that I had to follow a certain unwritten rule book about how to look professional.
Speaker B:I thought my clothes had to be structured, formal and honestly, often uncomfortable.
Speaker B:Now mind you, that was before the business casual days, but I remember attending a meeting in a stiff blazer, feeling anything but myself.
Speaker B:And then one day I decided to just challenge that notion.
Speaker B:I chose to wear what felt right, something that represented my personality, even if it wasn't the typical corporate uniform.
Speaker B:And you know what?
Speaker B:I felt at ease and more importantly, I felt like me.
Speaker B:The shift was eye opening.
Speaker B:Embracing comfort without sacrificing confidence was incredibly empowering.
Speaker B:Now comfort is a priority and it allows me to show up as my most authentic self while still being professional.
Speaker B:So go through your closet and pick out one item that just makes you feel amazing.
Speaker B:Regardless of trends or what anyone else thinks, wear it soon and just notice how it makes you feel.
Speaker B:Number six is the ability to let go of drama.
Speaker B:Ah, drama.
Speaker B:In my younger years, I remember getting so caught up in the small stuff, worrying about who said what or what somebody might think one of the biggest benefits of aging is the realization that so much of that doesn't even matter now.
Speaker B:I do know some people my age who still get caught up in that mess.
Speaker B:But I believe for the most part, with age, you should become better at choosing your battles, focusing your energy on what really counts, and letting go of unnecessary stress.
Speaker B:It's like gaining the ability to breathe easier and to make space for joy instead.
Speaker B:So the next time you feel yourself getting pulled into unnecessary drama, pause and ask yourself, will this matter in a week?
Speaker B:In a month?
Speaker B:If the answer is no, give yourself permission to let it go.
Speaker B:7 A healthier perspective on Health as we age, our perspective on health changes, often for the better.
Speaker B:I know mine has I found that I no longer take my body for granted.
Speaker B:Every walk, every stretch, every healthy meal, it feels like an act of gratitude.
Speaker B:Aging gracefully means listening to your body, respecting it, and giving it what it needs to thrive.
Speaker B:It's less about fitting into a certain size, and it's more about feeling good, staying active, and appreciating the amazing things our bodies do for us every day.
Speaker B:So pick one small act of wellness that you can do today or maybe even within the next week.
Speaker B:Whether it's taking a short walk, doing a few stretches, or even just drinking an extra glass of water, treat it as an act of gratitude towards your body.
Speaker B:Number eight Finding Beauty in Simplicity When I was younger, I often found myself chasing after big moments, like, let's say, the lavish vacations or the grand gestures.
Speaker B:But as I've aged, I've come to see the beauty in the simple things, like a quiet morning with a cup of coffee, the laughter of loved ones and friends sitting outside on my patio or dancing to some good music.
Speaker B:These small moments are where true happiness lies, and I wouldn't trade them for anything.
Speaker B:Aging helps you slow down and just savor the everyday joys that make life meaningful.
Speaker B:So here's your action step.
Speaker B:Take a moment to enjoy a simple pleasure.
Speaker B:It could be a cup of tea, a good book, or even playing with the grandkids.
Speaker B:Allow yourself to fully savor it without distraction.
Speaker B:Number nine Financial freedom and wisdom.
Speaker B:So another surprising benefit of aging is gaining a different relationship.
Speaker B:With money, you learn what matters and what doesn't.
Speaker B:So the impulse purchases, the need for the latest gadget, all of that starts to fade.
Speaker B:Now I'm gonna be honest, I still sometimes struggle with the gadget part, says the person who wants another laptop.
Speaker B:But I digressed.
Speaker B:Instead, you find joy in spending on experiences on things that bring true value and maybe you've saved and you've planned well and now there's a sense of financial stability that allows you to enjoy life without the constant stress of making ends meet.
Speaker B:Reflect on one spending habit that you can adjust to bring more value to your life, maybe cutting down on impulse buys and putting that money toward an experience that will bring you lasting joy.
Speaker B:And finally, number 10 a deeper connection to your spirit, spirituality or purpose.
Speaker B:So one of the most beautiful parts of aging gracefully is the way it deepens your connection to spirituality or your life's purpose.
Speaker B:Whether it's through faith, as it is for me, meditation, or simply reflecting on what truly matters, aging brings with it a sense of peace and understanding.
Speaker B:You start to see your place in the world differently.
Speaker B:You realize that you're part of something much bigger, and that gives life an added depth and richness that that's hard to put into words.
Speaker B:Here's what I want you to do.
Speaker B:Take some time soon to reflect on your life's purpose, whether through journaling, prayer, or simply quiet contemplation.
Speaker B:What brings you peace?
Speaker B:What gives you a sense of fulfillment?
Speaker B:Let that guide your days.
Speaker B:So there you have it, my friend.
Speaker B:If this episode inspired you or brought a smile to your face, why not share it with someone else who could use a boost?
Speaker B:As I always say, we're on this journey together, and sometimes a simple reminder can make all the difference.
Speaker B:I'd love to hear from you.
Speaker B:What are your favorite parts of getting older?
Speaker B:Reach out, share your stories, and let's keep the conversation going.
Speaker B:Aging doesn't have to be something that we fear.
Speaker B:It can be something that we celebrate, something that adds layers of richness to our lives.
Speaker B:Each year brings new opportunities, new joys, and new surprises.
Speaker B:Remember, together we're redefining what it means to age beautifully and of course, to age with grace and style.
Speaker B:Until next time, stay fabulous, stay positive, and keep shining.
