Speaker:James Dyson had a real problem with vacuum cleaners.| Back in the 20th century,
Speaker:a household vacuum cleaner worked by rolling over the carpet,
Speaker:grabbing dust with brushes attached to a cylindrical mechanism,
Speaker:and then sucking up that dust and storing it in a bag that was connected to a
Speaker:pipe.
Speaker:When the bag filled up,
Speaker:you had to take it out and replace it with a new one.
Speaker:In many ways,
Speaker:it seems crude,
Speaker:especially when you consider that we will soon have self-driving cars on the
Speaker:road.
Speaker:Dyson absolutely loathed changing out the vacuum cleaner bags.
Speaker:He assumed,
Speaker:quite correctly,
Speaker:that other people hated it too.
Speaker:It was a filthy business.
Speaker:Dust got everywhere,
Speaker:and often it left matters just as messy as when he'd started.
Speaker:He decided he was going to try to find a way to create a bagless vacuum cleaner.
Speaker:The big issue,
Speaker:of course,
Speaker:was how this cleaner would dispose of the dust.
Speaker:For a while,
Speaker:Dyson didn't have any ideas.
Speaker:One day,
Speaker:Dyson was at an industrial sawmill.
Speaker:He noticed that it was relatively clean for a sawmill.
Speaker:He discovered that there were a couple of large cones that not only collected
Speaker:the sawdust,
Speaker:but removed it from the air.
Speaker:These machines were called cyclonic separators.
Speaker:Dyson thought this principle could be a tool that adapted to work in household
Speaker:vacuum cleaners,
Speaker:so he fashioned a crude cyclone model out of cardboard and scotch tape,
Speaker:connected it to his normal vacuum cleaner,
Speaker:and went about sweeping the home.
Speaker:He found that it worked extremely well.
Speaker:He went to work building prototypes and trying to line up financing.
Speaker:After 15 years of trial and error,
Speaker:Dyson's cyclone power totally bagless vacuum cleaner hit the market.
Speaker:Eventually,
Speaker:it became a tremendous success.
Speaker:Now the vacuum cleaner bag is nearly extinct and no house cleaner ever has to
Speaker:live with getting lint all over his or her hands.
Speaker:Dyson solved his bag problem by assessing a situation,
Speaker:coming up with a theory,
Speaker:being curious about other industries,
Speaker:experimenting on his own,
Speaker:and finally producing the ultimate solution.
Speaker:He probably didn't realize it at the time,
Speaker:but in finding a workable answer for bag-free vacuuming,
Speaker:Dyson was emulating a few of the most well-known creative problem-solving
Speaker:principles,
Speaker:ones that Leonardo da Vinci used to great effect.
Speaker:To be clear,
Speaker:this isn't a book about da Vinci's life,
Speaker:but he just so happens to be the archetype for creativity and out-of-the-box
Speaker:thinking for so many of us that he's a fantastic role model to analyze.
Speaker:It's from following his lead and mindsets that we can start to become more
Speaker:creative in our own ways.
Speaker:History's greatest polymath.
Speaker:Leonardo da Vinci,
Speaker:born in 1452 in Tuscany,
Speaker:Italy,
Speaker:is arguably the most famous and accomplished polymath in the history of the
Speaker:world,
Speaker:as well as someone recognized for massive creativity.
Speaker:A polymath,
Speaker:sometimes referred to colloquially as a renaissance man or woman,
Speaker:is a person with deep expertise across an impossibly wide range of subjects and
Speaker:disciplines.
Speaker:Science,
Speaker:math,
Speaker:the arts,
Speaker:politics,
Speaker:culture,
Speaker:history,
Speaker:you name it,
Speaker:and he cultivated an interest in it and likely gained a level of proficiency.
Speaker:Polymaths have deep and ongoing interests in multiple areas.
Speaker:When a problem comes along,
Speaker:polymaths solve it by tapping it into their knowledge in different subjects.
Speaker:They're relentless about gaining knowledge and putting it into application.
Speaker:Galileo,
Speaker:1564 to 1642,
Speaker:was a polymath who explored astronomy,
Speaker:mathematics,
Speaker:physics,
Speaker:and engineering,
Speaker:and who basically gave us the modern scientific method.
Speaker:Benjamin Franklin,
Speaker:1706 to 1790,
Speaker:was an expert in politics,
Speaker:science and philosophy,
Speaker:who,
Speaker:between inventing bifocals and discovering electricity,
Speaker:helped found the United States of America.
Speaker:It seems there is a clear pattern between a mastery of multiple disciplines and
Speaker:creativity.
Speaker:Da Vinci,
Speaker:though,
Speaker:is the model from which all subsequent polymaths are born.
Speaker:His list of accomplishments is staggering and the variety of fields he mastered
Speaker:is beyond belief.
Speaker:Anatomy.
Speaker:Da Vinci reshaped what human beings knew about themselves.
Speaker:He was the first person to create detailed views of the internal organs of the
Speaker:human body.
Speaker:He made casts of the brain and ventricles from a deceased ox,
Speaker:paving the way for such models of human organs.
Speaker:He was the first to describe the S-shaped structure of the human spine.
Speaker:He completed numerous dissections of both human and animal bodies,
Speaker:meticulously documenting and drawing everything he saw.
Speaker:Imagine how valuable those diagrams were,
Speaker:coming from someone so artistically skilled.
Speaker:Even today,
Speaker:Da Vinci's many illustrations of human anatomy are still necessary studies.
Speaker:Innovation and Invention.
Speaker:Da Vinci's foresight was incredible.
Speaker:He came up with drafts of several inventions that were finally brought to life
Speaker:almost 500 years after he lived.
Speaker:The helicopter,
Speaker:the parachute,
Speaker:the military tank,
Speaker:the robot,
Speaker:and scuba gear all sprang from ideas first put forth by Da Vinci.
Speaker:And that's just a partial list.
Speaker:He had a particular interest in military and defense inventions,
Speaker:and biographers have speculated that his various artistic endeavors were only
Speaker:meant as stop gaps so he could find more work in warfare.
Speaker:Architecture.
Speaker:Da Vinci was fascinated with large scale construction projects and served as a
Speaker:consultant to builders of his time.
Speaker:He designed a system for canal locks that wound up being extremely close to the
Speaker:types that are used today.
Speaker:He even dove into urban planning with his conception of the ideal city.
Speaker:Art.
Speaker:Da Vinci painted a couple of masterpieces you may have heard of,
Speaker:the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper.
Speaker:His iconic Vitruvian man drawing of the human body is as much a piece of art as
Speaker:a scientific explanation.
Speaker:Da Vinci also revolutionized the use of landscapes in his art and was an early
Speaker:innovator in the use of oil paint.
Speaker:He was a sculptor as well.
Speaker:Science.
Speaker:Da Vinci's expertise made him a key figure in the development of studies in
Speaker:several different sciences.
Speaker:He was the first to speculate that fossils would prove that Earth was far older
Speaker:than those of his time believed.
Speaker:He made detailed depictions of plants that influenced how botany was studied.
Speaker:He made intensive studies on the motion of water.
Speaker:He designed mills,
Speaker:machines,
Speaker:and engines that were powered by water.
Speaker:He even designed a musical keyboard that played bowed strings.
Speaker:Occasionally he slept,
Speaker:we can assume.
Speaker:But how did Da Vinci accomplish everything he did?
Speaker:What made him so influential in so many different disciplines that continued to
Speaker:be a part of our everyday lives?
Speaker:Was it truly a level of creative genius that few have been able to aspire to
Speaker:ever since?
Speaker:Yes,
Speaker:and no.
Speaker:Author Michael Gelb explored possible reasons in his book How to Think Like Da
Speaker:Vinci.
Speaker:Gelb examined a multitude of Da Vinci's achievements and notebooks and
Speaker:speculated on a few facets of the polymath's career and traits that could
Speaker:explain why the Renaissance man was so prolific and visionary.
Speaker:What's inspirational about Gelb's list is that the traits that define Da
Speaker:Vinci's genius are all inborn human elements each of us can improve with just a
Speaker:little more awareness.
Speaker:Even if we can't conceptualize a flying machine or an iconic piece of art,
Speaker:as Da Vinci did,
Speaker:we can easily emulate his approach to improve the quality of our minds and what
Speaker:we produce.
Speaker:Thus,
Speaker:it can be said that we can indeed think like Da Vinci and learn the fundamental
Speaker:mindsets he possessed,
Speaker:albeit perhaps not as effectively or intensely.
Speaker:Gelb identified a few traits in particular that he felt were responsible for Da
Speaker:Vinci's creative prolific habits.
Speaker:I'll present my own in the following chapter.
Speaker:Insatiable Curiosity.
Speaker:Da Vinci was driven to know the truth in all its aspects.
Speaker:He was curious about scientific principles.
Speaker:He was intent on finding out what worked.
Speaker:He would ask why until he truly comprehended.
Speaker:Indulging his own interest led him to visualize solutions to problems that
Speaker:generations in the far off future would encounter.
Speaker:When you're curious about something,
Speaker:you will attack it from every angle and never cease trying to solve it,
Speaker:and that can lead to spectacular creativity and resourcefulness.
Speaker:Seek knowledge through experience.
Speaker:People in Da Vinci's time weren't used to challenging long-held beliefs through
Speaker:their own investigation.
Speaker:Governmental and religious forces discouraged the population from questioning
Speaker:anything they decreed.
Speaker:After all,
Speaker:Galileo Galilei,
Speaker:not quite a contemporary of Da Vinci's,
Speaker:being born in 1564 while Da Vinci died in 1519,
Speaker:came into great conflict with the church over his concept of heliocentrism,
Speaker:the notion that the earth revolved around the sun and was not the center of the
Speaker:universe.
Speaker:Da Vinci wouldn't have that restriction.
Speaker:He sought to answer his questions through first-hand experience,
Speaker:and wanted to get as many perspectives on a situation as he possibly could.
Speaker:It's only when you're able to challenge the so-called rules and conventional
Speaker:ways of thinking that,
Speaker:like Da Vinci,
Speaker:you can be creative.
Speaker:Embracing the Unknown.
Speaker:Da Vinci didn't seek quick certainty.
Speaker:He sought truth.
Speaker:In doing so,
Speaker:he had to deal with ambiguity and uncertainty,
Speaker:which is just how he liked it.
Speaker:He went into situations and lines of thought without feeling he needed a
Speaker:definite answer.
Speaker:He knew that adhering to a strict code of safety and belief would keep him from
Speaker:exploring the world,
Speaker:so he circumvented the rules and accepted the unfamiliar.
Speaker:Balancing Art and Science.
Speaker:More than anyone,
Speaker:Da Vinci held logic and imagination in equal importance.
Speaker:He balanced the two apparent opposites and saw how both approaches were
Speaker:important in decoding truth.
Speaker:By holding art and science in equal esteem,
Speaker:Da Vinci obtained a more complete overview of the world that fascinated him.
Speaker:It's likely this mixture of interests that was in part responsible for his
Speaker:degree of insight and genius.
Speaker:His imagination was so powerful that inventors born centuries after Da Vinci
Speaker:used his notes and observations to build their own creations.
Speaker:For us,
Speaker:this could mean looking for answers to practical questions through the arts,
Speaker:using drawings to explain complex functions or music to describe the functions
Speaker:of a beating heart.
Speaker:Da Vinci's motivations were so broad and all-encompassing that his ability to
Speaker:channel them into focused work and results almost makes him superhuman.
Speaker:But the factors that drove Da Vinci are ones that almost all other humans on
Speaker:earth can emulate,
Speaker:and they serve as a kind of blueprint for creative thinking.
Speaker:The Psychology of Creativity.
Speaker:Still,
Speaker:attaining that kind of creativity is difficult for some of us to imagine.
Speaker:Worse yet,
Speaker:some of us feel that it is impossible.
Speaker:Creativity is popularly considered,
Speaker:not entirely accurately,
Speaker:more of an impulse than a function.
Speaker:Often,
Speaker:creativity is tied to the notion of natural talent that only certain people
Speaker:possess.
Speaker:That assumption is also incorrect.
Speaker:Just like analysis,
Speaker:memory,
Speaker:and communication,
Speaker:creativity is a complex function administered by several parts of the human
Speaker:brain.
Speaker:Researchers have spent myriad hours in lab environments trying to determine
Speaker:where creativity comes from and what parts of our anatomy control it.
Speaker:While they've made progress and come up with some firm determinations,
Speaker:perhaps the elusive nature of creativity has transformed its mystery into
Speaker:certain myths about the brain's role.
Speaker:The Left Brain,
Speaker:Right Brain Myth.
Speaker:This idea is certainly responsible,
Speaker:in large part,
Speaker:for perpetuating the notion that creativity is inborn.
Speaker:In the 1970s,
Speaker:neuropsychologist Roger Speary worked on a study,
Speaker:the findings of which gave rise to the theory of the split brain.
Speaker:Speary's work suggested that the two hemispheres of the human brain control
Speaker:different realms of thinking,
Speaker:the left side handles logic and analysis,
Speaker:and the right side enables intuition and subjectivity.
Speaker:When these findings were published in the media,
Speaker:casual readers seized on the dichotomy of left brain,
Speaker:right brain people.
Speaker:Scientific,
Speaker:mathematical,
Speaker:and practical people were thought to be dominated by their left brains,
Speaker:whereas creative,
Speaker:artistic,
Speaker:and imaginative people were controlled by the right side.
Speaker:This catchy contrast is impressed upon many of us as scientific fact,
Speaker:but it's a myth,
Speaker:or,
Speaker:more accurately,
Speaker:an overly simplistic explanation of how the brain actually functions.
Speaker:Speary's experiments involved animals and humans who had their corpus callosums
Speaker:severed.
Speaker:The corpus callosum is the thick bunch of fibers that connects the left and
Speaker:right hemispheres of the brain and serves as the conduit of information between
Speaker:the two sides.
Speaker:Some epilepsy patients had their corpus callosums surgically cut to lessen the
Speaker:effects of seizures,
Speaker:so only one side of their functioning would be impaired during a seizure.
Speaker:So in someone with a severed corpus callosum,
Speaker:if the right eye,
Speaker:left brain,
Speaker:sees a table,
Speaker:the left brain says,
Speaker:table,
Speaker:and everyone's comfortable with the fact that the table has been correctly
Speaker:identified.
Speaker:But if the left eye,
Speaker:right brain,
Speaker:sees a table,
Speaker:the right brain says,
Speaker:well,
Speaker:probably something unintelligible,
Speaker:we're not sure what.
Speaker:Each side of the brain controls the opposite side of the body.
Speaker:The left brain controls the right eye and vice versa.
Speaker:Speary discovered that when test subjects covered their left eye,
Speaker:controlled by the right brain,
Speaker:they were able to process and accurately name certain items their right eye saw.
Speaker:But when they covered their right eye,
Speaker:controlled by the left brain,
Speaker:they couldn't remember any of the items they saw with their left eye.
Speaker:Through his studies,
Speaker:Speary isolated certain functions that the left and right brains performed and
Speaker:how they applied to language,
Speaker:math,
Speaker:drawing,
Speaker:interpretation,
Speaker:speech,
Speaker:and so forth.
Speaker:From these results came a very overgeneralized picture that the left brain is
Speaker:analytical and the right brain is creative.
Speaker:Even though Speary himself cautioned against making that rash distinction,
Speaker:when it was discovered by popular culture,
Speaker:it was too catchy to resist.
Speaker:From these results came the theory that the two sides of the brain handle
Speaker:entirely different kinds of processing.
Speaker:The left side deals with numbers,
Speaker:language,
Speaker:and reasoning.
Speaker:The right side oversees emotions,
Speaker:creativity,
Speaker:and intuition.
Speaker:If it sounds like a leap in logic,
Speaker:that's because it is.
Speaker:The truth about the brain is a little more complex,
Speaker:and Speary himself insisted we remember that.
Speaker:Yes,
Speaker:the left and right sides of our brains can handle different functions and
Speaker:collaborate with each other through the corpus callosum to get thinking done.
Speaker:But researchers found that both sides do roughly the same amount of activity in
Speaker:all people.
Speaker:A mathematician's right brain doesn't just turn down when they're working,
Speaker:and a composer doesn't simply suspend their left brain when they're writing.
Speaker:A great example of how the two halves of the brain work together is in learning
Speaker:a language.
Speaker:The left brain,
Speaker:analysis central,
Speaker:identifies the alphabet and pronunciation of certain words,
Speaker:but the right brain picks up on intonation,
Speaker:stress,
Speaker:and emotional content.
Speaker:The two sides collaborate to determine the whole meaning of a word or phrase in
Speaker:a certain language.
Speaker:So you're not a left brain or right brain person,
Speaker:no one is.
Speaker:Creativity engages all aspects of the brain and calls upon different functions
Speaker:in both sides.
Speaker:Understanding that could be the key to unlocking your creative possibilities.
Speaker:Creativity is indeed something learnable,
Speaker:but it doesn't particularly matter how good you are at math.
Speaker:Default Mode Network.
Speaker:As you might suspect and have experienced firsthand,
Speaker:the brain has multiple types of functioning modes.
Speaker:When you're sleeping,
Speaker:for instance,
Speaker:the brain has a very specific focus and set of duties.
Speaker:When you're trying to solve a difficult math problem,
Speaker:you activate what's called the Executive Attention Network.
Speaker:This mental mode helps your brain hyper-focus and accomplish a specific goal
Speaker:that requires concentration and ignoring potential distractions.
Speaker:As you might also predict and hope,
Speaker:there's another type of mental mode that assists in creativity,
Speaker:abstract thinking,
Speaker:and the generation of ideas.
Speaker:It's not just one that you can push yourself into,
Speaker:rather it's the opposite.
Speaker:You must relax yourself into it.
Speaker:If a solution is outside of your brain's familiar experience,
Speaker:which is shaped by your beliefs,
Speaker:culture,
Speaker:and biases,
Speaker:your conscious mind will most likely never find it.
Speaker:The conscious mind deals too much in fact and the present,
Speaker:which stands in stark contrast to abstract thought and conceptual thinking.
Speaker:An analytical search for a solution can comb through the entire content of your
Speaker:mind's known,
Speaker:but not outside of it.
Speaker:Novel answers reside outside of your mind's known box,
Speaker:and the subconscious is the first place to look.
Speaker:When you allow your brain to integrate new information with existing knowledge
Speaker:on a subconscious level,
Speaker:it can establish new connections and see patterns not obvious to your conscious
Speaker:mind.
Speaker:Creative solutions and ideas are more likely to bubble up from a brain that
Speaker:applies unconscious thought to a problem,

Speaker:which is activated when you stop thinking about something specific and just veg

Speaker:is the best place to park a problem.
Speaker:In the DMN,
Speaker:your brain does some of its best,
Speaker:wisest,
Speaker:and most creative work.
Speaker:Research from Rachel and Snyder in 2007 demonstrates a predictable pattern of
Speaker:neurological activity that's your brain's go-to state when it's at rest,
Speaker:not focused on anything in particular or actively engaging with its environment.
Speaker:It's associated with experimental thinking,
Speaker:mind wandering,
Speaker:emotions,
Speaker:past encounters,
Speaker:and intuition.
Speaker:The imagination network is used in situations like brainstorming,
Speaker:painting,
Speaker:daydreaming,
Speaker:or devising a new recipe.
Speaker:Yes,
Speaker:this is where you might consider most creative thinking to occur,
Speaker:while execution and analysis occurs in the other mental networks.
Speaker:This mental state is also where ruminating and worrying takes place.
Speaker:Hey,
Speaker:no one said that it wasn't going to have its downsides.
Speaker:The harder and more cognitively demanding a particular task is,
Speaker:the less the DMN is activated.
Speaker:We'll discuss later on how to use this DMN to your advantage.
Speaker:Creatives,
Speaker:crazy or genius?
Speaker:When some of us think of legendarily creative people,
Speaker:we occasionally make the very dubious observation that many of them were,
Speaker:to some degree,
Speaker:crazy.
Speaker:The meaning of creativity infers the ability to invent something out of
Speaker:nothing,
Speaker:to call into existence something that wasn't there just a second ago.
Speaker:That involves going outside the info processing boundaries of the brain and
Speaker:just making things up,
Speaker:which some people might consider crazy.
Speaker:To be sure,
Speaker:there have been some artists and creators who suffered from a variety of
Speaker:emotional disorders,
Speaker:Charles Dickens,
Speaker:Ernest Hemingway,
Speaker:Virginia Woolf,
Speaker:Tennessee Williams,
Speaker:and Leo Tolstoy,
Speaker:all dealt with clinical depression at some point,
Speaker:according to certain studies,
Speaker:which were,
Speaker:it should be noted,
Speaker:highly contested by some.
Speaker:Researchers also determined that many,
Speaker:but not all creatives,
Speaker:endured difficult life experiences like losing their parents,
Speaker:social rejection,
Speaker:or physical handicaps.
Speaker:But no evidence has conclusively proven that mental illness is a contributor to
Speaker:a creative person's productivity.
Speaker:A study of over a million Swedish citizens conducted over a span of four
Speaker:decades and completed in 2012,
Speaker:found that artists were not likelier to have psychiatric ailments.
Speaker:They were,
Speaker:however,
Speaker:found to have an unusually high number of relatives who suffered conditions
Speaker:like autism,
Speaker:schizophrenia,
Speaker:bipolar disorder,
Speaker:or anorexia nervosa.
Speaker:Artists themselves typically had more highly developed schizotypal traits.
Speaker:Despite the name,
Speaker:having these traits isn't quite the same as having a schizophrenic disorder.
Speaker:In fact,
Speaker:almost everybody on earth has these characteristics.
Speaker:Schizotypal traits are mainly positive.
Speaker:Generally speaking,
Speaker:they involve what motivational speakers would call thinking outside the box,
Speaker:unique perspectives and experiences,
Speaker:non-conformance,
Speaker:maybe even a fanciful belief in magic.
Speaker:There are some unseemly schizotypal traits as well,
Speaker:cognitive disarray and difficulty-filling pleasure,
Speaker:but by and large,
Speaker:the schizotype reflects the positive aspects over the negative.
Speaker:A 2008 study by British scientists Mark Beatty and Andrian Furman found that
Speaker:positive schizotypes were associated with character traits like confidence,
Speaker:insight,
Speaker:resourcefulness,
Speaker:diverse interests,
Speaker:and even sexiness.
Speaker:They were also oriented toward doing at least one creative thing every day.
Speaker:Then of course,
Speaker:there's the precuneus.
Speaker:The precuneus is a part of the superior parietal lobule located between the
Speaker:left and right hemispheres of the brain.
Speaker:There's still some mystery about how it actually functions in relation to other
Speaker:parts of the brain,
Speaker:but it's known to have several very complex jobs,
Speaker:memory retrieval in processing,
Speaker:environmental analysis,
Speaker:cue processing,
Speaker:organizing mental images,
Speaker:and pain reaction.
Speaker:How the precuneus relates to creative people is that they can't turn the darn
Speaker:thing off.
Speaker:Neuroscientists Hikaru Takeuchi found in 2011 that creative types could not
Speaker:suppress their precuneus.
Speaker:They were unable to filter out inessential brain activity.
Speaker:While this might sound like Takeuchi said creatives were cluttered with
Speaker:meaningless thoughts,
Speaker:what he actually meant was that they had more access to creative stimuli and
Speaker:could put ideas from different networks together.
Speaker:And in 2013,
Speaker:Austrian researcher Andreas Fink found that there was a direct link between the
Speaker:inability to suppress the precuneus and higher generation of original ideas.
Speaker:What this all means is that the key to creative thinking is to let as much
Speaker:information into one's brain as possible in order to make connections and
Speaker:associations between different elements.
Speaker:Even if that cognitive process results in strange,
Speaker:outlandish,
Speaker:weird,
Speaker:or,
Speaker:say it together,
Speaker:crazy associations,
Speaker:those connections often produce the most creative ideas.
Speaker:This can be great for generating hundreds of ideas at once,
Speaker:if properly harnessed,
Speaker:or result in mental chatter you can't escape that completely drowns out
Speaker:coherent thoughts.
Speaker:It can be a double-edged sword.
Speaker:I don't want to speculate on whether Da Vinci was crazy,
Speaker:but we do know that he came up with blueprints for the airplane,
Speaker:the parachute,
Speaker:the bicycle,
Speaker:the guided missile,
Speaker:and even the snorkel,
Speaker:multiple centuries before they were physically invented.
Speaker:He could only generate those ideas by letting his precuneus run wild and
Speaker:thinking as creatively as anybody ever could.
Speaker:If that's crazy,
Speaker:then I'll have more crazy.
Speaker:Just know that the side effects for such heights may be more than you bargained
Speaker:for.
Speaker:Creativity is good for your health.
Speaker:Despite a dubious link to mental health,
Speaker:being creative not only produces solutions,
Speaker:new thought processes,
Speaker:bold ideas,
Speaker:or a nice quilt,
Speaker:it actually has great benefits to your physical health.
Speaker:The American Journal of Public Health noted that engaging in a creative pursuit
Speaker:is a great way to relieve stress.
Speaker:In fact,
Speaker:you don't even have to physically do something creative to de-stress.
Speaker:The journal claims you just have to watch somebody doing something creative or
Speaker:see the results of their work.
Speaker:Creativity impacts the brain in much the same way that meditation does by
Speaker:focusing on mindfulness,
Speaker:being in the moment,
Speaker:and reflecting on internal process.
Speaker:Whether it's sewing,
Speaker:painting,
Speaker:building a garden,
Speaker:or watching a movie,
Speaker:both the act and the mere engagement with creativity naturally stimulate a
Speaker:sense of calm.
Speaker:Creativity also promotes increased functionality of the brain.
Speaker:It encourages production of new neurons that are crucial to the central nervous
Speaker:system.
Speaker:According to the Croatian Medical Journal,
Speaker:art therapy has been found to be an extremely valuable tool in repairing brains
Speaker:that have been injured in some way,
Speaker:helping to rewire some of the functionalities that have been damaged.
Speaker:CNN reported that middle-aged and older people who take up artistic pursuits
Speaker:were 73% less likely to develop the mental impairments that lead to dementia.
Speaker:Considering those physiological benefits to creativity,
Speaker:it's a wonder that anyone would de-mit something that should only be reserved
Speaker:for one spare time or weekends.
Speaker:It's a trait that needs to be engaged more in as many life areas as we can use
Speaker:it,
Speaker:and certainly in view of how much he produced.
Speaker:Da Vinci obviously created nearly 24 hours a day.
Speaker:Creativity is the key.
Speaker:You probably don't need more convincing as to the benefits and virtues of being
Speaker:able to think more creatively on a consistent basis.
Speaker:You can see that it's led to some of the greatest innovations in history,
Speaker:and it can keep you healthy and happy.
Speaker:And yet,
Speaker:there is more.
Speaker:Truly creative people can apply their faculties of asking,
Speaker:what if,
Speaker:to every single area of life,
Speaker:specifically using their imaginations to solve problems.
Speaker:This makes sense when you think about it.
Speaker:Any problem you have is,
Speaker:in a way,
Speaker:a failure of imagination,
Speaker:i.e.,
Speaker:the failure to conceive of and access those ideas and concepts that constitute
Speaker:a solution.
Speaker:Solving a problem requires something special of us.
Speaker:It asks that we think something we haven't thought before,
Speaker:try something we haven't tried before,
Speaker:or imagine a perspective that we currently don't hold.
Speaker:What could be more creative than that?
Speaker:Let's talk more concretely and look at exactly what we mean when we say problem
Speaker:before we talk about problem solving.
Speaker:A problem is the experience of realizing that there's a gap between what is and
Speaker:what you wish the case to be.
Speaker:All problems can be framed as a tension between the reality and what you desire.
Speaker:You're hungry,
Speaker:want food,
Speaker:but don't have any food.
Speaker:You wish that you had a garden without any pests to bother you,
Speaker:but you have aphids and want to be rid of them.
Speaker:You have two equally important invitations for Saturday night,
Speaker:and don't know which one to go to,
Speaker:but you must decide.
Speaker:There's a car heading right for you,
Speaker:making it so that your desired future reality and the future reality it is
Speaker:suggesting are in conflict.
Speaker:You get the idea.
Speaker:Right in its very definition,
Speaker:we see that problems are whatever they're defined to be.
Speaker:The way we conceptualize of a problem is more important than the problem itself.
Speaker:In fact,
Speaker:our manner of thinking about a situation is the problem.
Speaker:Therefore,
Speaker:addressing how we engage mentally with reality is the best and only means to
Speaker:arriving at a solution.
Speaker:We can think of four main types of problems.
Speaker:The first type is where we know what the problem is.
Speaker:We know what needs to be done,
Speaker:but for whatever reason,
Speaker:we can't motivate ourselves to take that action.
Speaker:The problem here is our resistance to actually bringing about the solution,
Speaker:or our procrastination,
Speaker:fear of change,
Speaker:or lack of motivation.
Speaker:Examples could include dragging your feet when it comes to going to the gym,
Speaker:to achieve your fitness goals,
Speaker:struggling with quitting any kind of addiction,
Speaker:or simply being lazy when it comes to taking those actions required to achieve
Speaker:the outcomes we know we want.
Speaker:Solving these problems is more a matter of finding the right mindset to
Speaker:manifest the solution that is already understood and identified.
Speaker:The second type is also where we know what the problem is,
Speaker:but to solve it requires more skill or knowledge than we currently have.
Speaker:Here,
Speaker:it's not so much a question of motivating ourselves psychologically or removing
Speaker:unconscious resistance or limitations,
Speaker:but rather being more systematic in seeking out the information or expertise we
Speaker:currently lack to solve our problem.
Speaker:You might be trying to choose between two potential careers,
Speaker:but don't have enough information about either to make an informed decision.
Speaker:Your solution is therefore to seek that information.
Speaker:If your problem is you have a hole in your roof and you don't know how to fix
Speaker:it,
Speaker:the solution is to seek a roofing expert.
Speaker:If your personal accounts are in shambles and you're having trouble filing your
Speaker:tax return,
Speaker:part of your response will be to create better techniques to store and organize
Speaker:your data.
Speaker:Underlying all these solutions is simply adopting the right attitude and
Speaker:systematically thinking about what's needed,
Speaker:what you have,
Speaker:what you don't have,
Speaker:and what you want.
Speaker:It's drawing a clear path between your current state and the state you want to
Speaker:be in.
Speaker:Creativity can also be substituted here for expertise or information.
Speaker:You may put together a makeshift roof repair solution using what you know to
Speaker:buy yourself more time.
Speaker:You may not know anything about taxes or accounting,
Speaker:but you certainly use your creative thinking skills when you recall that you
Speaker:have a friend whose partner is an accountant and consider what you could offer
Speaker:them in return for some expert advice.
Speaker:A third type of problem is again where we know what the problem is,
Speaker:but the solution we need requires a total shift in perspective,
Speaker:a new pair of glasses to look through,
Speaker:a complete out-of-the-box approach.
Speaker:This ability to reframe and reconsider is fundamentally a creative enterprise.
Speaker:This is because there is actually no new information needed or uncovered.
Speaker:There's only the need to look at the same information in a different way.
Speaker:We don't change the problem in front of us,
Speaker:but ourselves and how we perceive that problem.
Speaker:By being creative,
Speaker:we ask,
Speaker:how is the question itself affecting my perception here?
Speaker:What other question could I ask?
Speaker:We give ourselves the opportunity to reframe,
Speaker:rearrange,
Speaker:and restructure.
Speaker:We become curious about our variability to perceive and organize information
Speaker:and ask how we can change or become better.
Speaker:A classic example,
Speaker:your problem is that you have an irate customer who left a scathing review of
Speaker:your business on a public site,
Speaker:but look at it another way.
Speaker:This person is in a prime position to give you honest and very valuable
Speaker:feedback about what's not working in your business so you can improve and avoid
Speaker:the outcome in future.
Speaker:What a gift.
Speaker:What a shift in perspective.
Speaker:The problem is no longer a problem.
Speaker:Finally,
Speaker:the category of problem that creativity is best able to solve.
Speaker:Those problems that are actually unknown and need to be identified in the first
Speaker:place.
Speaker:This is the space where we challenge our assumptions and habits,
Speaker:brainstorm new ideas,
Speaker:and get a better handle on the realm of what's possible.
Speaker:The trick with hidden problems is that they need to be uncovered first and this
Speaker:can only happen with a large dose of creative thinking.
Speaker:As an example,
Speaker:imagine that a couple starts experiencing problems in their relationship but
Speaker:don't really know why.
Speaker:They only know they don't get along anymore and things aren't working.
Speaker:Is it a loss of spark?
Speaker:Old resentments?
Speaker:Is their problem actually perfectly normal for their stage of relationship?
Speaker:Does their communication style need improvement or is it simply that they're no
Speaker:longer as compatible?
Speaker:By going to couples therapy,
Speaker:for example,
Speaker:they can begin to ask pointed questions to get to the root of the issue.
Speaker:Creative questions that they may never have thought to ask before.
Speaker:Takeaways.
Speaker:Creativity is something we all want.
Speaker:But how can we even define it?
Speaker:Perhaps we can describe it best by looking at someone who appeared to embody
Speaker:creativity,
Speaker:Leonardo da Vinci.
Speaker:He possessed a few traits in spades that may have been the keys to his success.
Speaker:Curiosity,
Speaker:experimentation,
Speaker:mindfulness,
Speaker:embracing the unknown,
Speaker:and balancing multiple disciplines in both artistic and scientific endeavors
Speaker:alike.
Speaker:We can emulate these traits,
Speaker:which means creativity is a learnable quality.
Speaker:The spark of insight that James Dyson used to create his revolutionary vacuum
Speaker:cleaner was a distillation of some of these traits.
Speaker:Some of us,
Speaker:however,
Speaker:are constrained by one of the most long-standing myths in psychology,
Speaker:the myth of hemisphere-specific functionality.
Speaker:In other words,
Speaker:people believe that they have talent in only the left hemisphere,
Speaker:logic,
Speaker:rationality,
Speaker:or the right hemisphere,
Speaker:creativity,
Speaker:art.
Speaker:This leads us to believe that we are inherently destined for a lack of
Speaker:creativity.
Speaker:Basic neurobiology proves this to be untrue.
Speaker:Moreover,
Speaker:three specific modes of thought all span both hemispheres.
Speaker:We're all two hemisphere thinkers.
Speaker:There have often been associations between creativity and mental illness.
Speaker:Do these claims hold any water?
Speaker:Yes,
Speaker:and no.
Speaker:There is certainly a correlation between the two groups,
Speaker:but there is nothing to suggest that one causes the other.
Speaker:A major factor may be the functioning of the Precuneus,
Speaker:a brain structure that filters out mental chatter from your consciousness.

Speaker:if it filters poorly,
Speaker:your head will be filled with endless chatter that you can't turn off.
Speaker:This can be fertile ground for creative ideas just as easily as insanity from
Speaker:not being able to experience silence.
Speaker:We already know we want creativity,
Speaker:but it also has health benefits.
Speaker:Creativity has been shown to reduce stress,
Speaker:improve brain functioning,
Speaker:and create similar soothing effects to meditation.
Speaker:This is achieved through keeping an active brain.

Speaker:creativity gives you the tools and keys to solve problems.

Speaker:but it's not always that we need creative solutions.
