Katie:

Hello.

2

:

Hello, I'm Katie and welcome to

Retro Made Your Pop Culture Rewind.

3

:

I hope you all had a nice Christmas.

4

:

Yep.

5

:

This movie that we're talking about

today was released on Christmas Day.

6

:

So I wanted to align this

episode with its anniversary.

7

:

So today we're gonna travel back

exactly 30 years to December

8

:

of 1993 for the Old West pseudo

biographical drama that is tombstone.

9

:

And as always, we'll touch on all the

other happenings of the time today.

10

:

I'm excited to have Hal Redneck here

with me from the Binge Boys podcast.

11

:

Hal is a host and a comedian, and you

might know him from Screen Junkies,

12

:

Disney Channel, and Key and Peel.

13

:

Hal, thank you for joining me.

14

:

Hal: Katie, it's my pleasure.

15

:

I always love talking movies and this

is a classic, classic nineties action

16

:

western that I have not seen in a while.

17

:

I re-watched it, getting

ready for this and, yeah, it

18

:

brought back a lot of memories.

19

:

yeah, some good, uh, old West fun.

20

:

Katie: Yeah.

21

:

And I can't believe it's 30 years ago.

22

:

But before we get into it, do

you wanna tell us a little bit

23

:

more about you and your work?

24

:

Hal: Sure.

25

:

Well, I love movies.

26

:

I've gotten a, you know, I was

a film major in school and my

27

:

father growing up, he gave me, an

an education on classic cinema.

28

:

when I wanted to go out and ride

bikes with my friends or, run

29

:

around, he was like, sit down.

30

:

Uh, you're watching, uh, either some

film noir or, uh, speaking of westerns,

31

:

his favorite Western is, Western called

Shane Shane with Alan Ladd from the

32

:

1950s, I believe for late forties, early

fifties, directed by George Stevens.

33

:

And, a lot of people might remember

a scene from Shane was playing

34

:

in, a more recent film, Logan.

35

:

the Wolverine movie, with Hugh

Jackman, Patrick Stewart, et cetera.

36

:

that, so there was like a tip of

the cap to this, old Western Shane,

37

:

which was a favorite of my dad's.

38

:

I've seen it maybe, three or four times.

39

:

It's, uh, it's definitely a classic.

40

:

Has a lot of those Western tropes.

41

:

Jack Palance

42

:

was also in it.

43

:

remember him from City Slickers.

44

:

He's a great villain.

45

:

Katie: He is a good villain.

46

:

Mm-Hmm.

47

:

Hal: Yeah.

48

:

yeah.

49

:

Real, like dressed in black

and just a bad dude in Shane.

50

:

so, yeah, love movies and,

western's a a many, many favorites.

51

:

Do you have, Katie, if I could

turn, the tables, for you.

52

:

Do you have a, do you have a

favorite Western of all time?

53

:

Katie: You know, I am gonna be embarrassed

to say I'm not a big Western person.

54

:

I do recall watching some of the old

ones, probably John Wayne ones, like at

55

:

my grandparents' house, but I couldn't,

56

:

I don't know what they were called.

57

:

They were just kind of

on in the background.

58

:

Um,

59

:

Hal: Sure.

60

:

I would recommend just as far as John

Wayne, there's, there's a western where,

61

:

he plays sort of an anti-hero and it's,

it's a really, a different take for him.

62

:

It's not as, 'cause he played a

lot of glorified, like, uh, you

63

:

know, I'm the man in the white hat.

64

:

There's a bad guy in the

black hat and everything is,

65

:

Katie: Mm

66

:

Hal: cut and dry.

67

:

But in, in a film called the

Searchers is a really dark, tonally

68

:

different western with John Wayne.

69

:

And, I would highly recommend

checking out the Searchers.

70

:

And then there's another John

Ford Western with, with John

71

:

Wayne called Stagecoach, is

72

:

Katie: like I have seen that.

73

:

Hal: Yeah.

74

:

another classic

75

:

Katie: Good.

76

:

Recommends.

77

:

Thank you.

78

:

Hal: for

79

:

sure.

80

:

Katie: I'm glad you have some

familiarity with the westerns.

81

:

I'm glad to hear that.

82

:

Hal: Yeah.

83

:

I also love, the, one of the

greatest, western comedies of all

84

:

time, Mel Brooks', blazing Saddles.

85

:

Katie: I don't think I've seen

that, but I've heard a lot about it.

86

:

I've seen city

87

:

slickers

88

:

Hal: city S Slickers.

89

:

that's a, a modern, comedy classic.

90

:

Love me some Billy

91

:

Crystal and, uh, the aforementioned jack

92

:

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

93

:

Well, before we open the time capsule, I

wanted to showcase one particular comment

94

:

that we had on YouTube, and how this will

make more sense to you in a little bit.

95

:

but so Jamie, who, we've had on

before, he was, uh, one of my guests

96

:

on the Roadhouse episode and he

is on the eighties and nineties

97

:

overlooked slash Uncensored podcast.

98

:

he says, Kurt and Patrick

should have done a brothers

99

:

separated at birth action movie.

100

:

I have the whole plot and all the

action sequences in my head right now.

101

:

And Jamie, thank you for the comment.

102

:

I would like for you to go ahead

and continue writing this, even

103

:

though our Swayze has left us, I

still want the script and I agree

104

:

that would've been really fantastic.

105

:

Okay, well, let's

106

:

Hal: Absolutely.

107

:

Katie: And this will make

more sense in a little bit.

108

:

Hell,

109

:

Hal: mm-Hmm.

110

:

Katie: if you're unfamiliar with

the show, I usually try and kind of

111

:

set the stage for the time period.

112

:

The movie was in by opening

113

:

a little time capsule

from December of:

114

:

Uh,

115

:

Hal: All right.

116

:

I lived, I lived through it,

so please take me back in

117

:

the way back machine, Katie.

118

:

Katie: I, the nineties are

better because I have a, a

119

:

better memory for them as well.

120

:

'cause I was quite young in the eighties,

but, so the Nielsen rated top shows from

121

:

the 93 94 season we have Home Improvement

122

:

Hal: Yep.

123

:

Yep.

124

:

Katie: Seinfeld, Roseanne, I feel

like she's been almost every time

125

:

we cover Nielsen ratings, Roseanne

is in the top Grace Under Fire.

126

:

And this was actually the premier

season for that show with Brett Butler.

127

:

I've

128

:

talked about watching that before.

129

:

Hal: Mm-Hmm.

130

:

Sure.

131

:

Craig t Nelson.

132

:

Katie: Yeah.

133

:

Craig t Nelson

134

:

Hal: Oh,

135

:

Frazier.

136

:

Wow.

137

:

Katie: This was the premier

season of Frazier as well.

138

:

Hal: That's funny.

139

:

And, now here we are.

140

:

everything old is new again.

141

:

Frazier's back.

142

:

Katie: indeed.

143

:

Were you a Frazier fan

144

:

then, or

145

:

Hal: like Frazier.

146

:

I haven't checked out the

new season, the, the reboot.

147

:

but, yeah, I enjoyed Frazier and Niles.

148

:

Niles is great.

149

:

Katie: I like 10 denials too.

150

:

Hal: Hyde Pierce,

151

:

and I love, I love Frazier's theme song,

152

:

Katie: It's so weird.

153

:

Hal: Eggs.

154

:

Katie: I don't really get it.

155

:

Hal: It is weird.

156

:

It's random.

157

:

I don't know.

158

:

I think it is Kelsey Grammar singing it.

159

:

Katie: yeah.

160

:

That would make sense.

161

:

Hal: and, it's, it like, it's

just the perfect amount of weird

162

:

and random and, uh, I, I love it.

163

:

Katie: Good point on the theme

song, and it's super random.

164

:

Yes.

165

:

Also, Murphy Brown, and for some

reason I never really watched, I

166

:

never got into Murphy Brown for

some, I don't really know why

167

:

Hal: I've seen a little bit of it.

168

:

And, again, another show that was,

brought back and rebooted just a

169

:

Katie: right.

170

:

Hal: ago.

171

:

Murphy Brown.

172

:

Katie: And I

173

:

Hal: don't know if it

went for a season or two.

174

:

Katie: Mm, good question.

175

:

I feel like I saw some of it.

176

:

It must not have lasted super long.

177

:

Roseanne also, I actually do think

that the new seasons of Roseanne

178

:

are quite good, or the Connors

now as it's called, because

179

:

Roseanne isn't on it anymore.

180

:

But, but I just, I am a big fan

of John Goodman and I like a lot

181

:

Hal: Yeah.

182

:

John Goodman's great.

183

:

Oh my gosh.

184

:

One of the best character

actors of all time.

185

:

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

186

:

. Also, this is 93, 94.

187

:

Season murder she wrote was

also in the top rated Nielsen.

188

:

Hal: Oh, my mother loves murder.

189

:

She wrote, I feel like

all people of a certain

190

:

Katie: Yep.

191

:

Mine too.

192

:

Hal: have to Yeah.

193

:

Have to love murder she wrote.

194

:

And, do you, do your folks or

do you know any, elder, folks

195

:

who love British mysteries?

196

:

Katie: I like . I kind of

like British mysteries.

197

:

I don't feel like,

198

:

Hal: You have

199

:

good taste.

200

:

Katie: I don't feel like my parents,

they must not have really reached us,

201

:

you know, on the standard cable, but,

202

:

Hal: My mom loves like everything on Brit

203

:

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

204

:

Hal: the, the Midsummer Murders

and, but, murder she wrote.

205

:

Absolutely.

206

:

Angela Lansbury.

207

:

RIP.

208

:

Yeah.

209

:

She is, a gem.

210

:

Katie: She really is.

211

:

Now, I gotta say, I was surprised

because murder she wrote is

212

:

almost always in the top ratings.

213

:

Even when we went back to the eighties.

214

:

So I had to look up.

215

:

Hal: Hmm.

216

:

Katie: This show ran from 84 to 96.

217

:

Hal: Wow.

218

:

Katie: Did you realize that?

219

:

Hal: run.

220

:

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

221

:

Hal: No,

222

:

Katie: Wow.

223

:

Yeah.

224

:

12.

225

:

What is that?

226

:

12 years.

227

:

That's a crazy long time

228

:

Hal: a run.

229

:

Quite a run.

230

:

Katie: for like an old lady.

231

:

Yeah, I like

232

:

it.

233

:

Hal: Good work.

234

:

Lansbury.

235

:

Katie: Yes.

236

:

Now there were some not necessarily

237

:

in the

238

:

Hal: here's a trivia

239

:

question for you.

240

:

Katie: yes.

241

:

Hal: can you name the murder she wrote?

242

:

Spinoff

243

:

Katie: No, I don't think

I realized there was one.

244

:

What is it?

245

:

Oh,

246

:

don't say.

247

:

Hal: Dowling.

248

:

Katie: Oh,

249

:

that's a murder.

250

:

Sh.

251

:

Yes.

252

:

Hal: Do you remember that one with

253

:

Katie: Well, I can

254

:

Hal: who was the dad on Happy Days?

255

:

Katie: yes.

256

:

I can picture it.

257

:

I don't, I'm, I couldn't tell

you much about the show, but

258

:

that is a great

259

:

Hal: tell you exactly what the show is.

260

:

it's Murder she wrote, except

with, instead of having a mystery

261

:

novelist, played by, j Jessica

Fletcher, Angela Lansbury.

262

:

it was, a mystery show and

the mysteries were solved by

263

:

a priest, the titular father.

264

:

Dowling.

265

:

Katie: because

266

:

he, yeah, they were friends in the

original show or what was the deal.

267

:

Hal: Yeah, I think so.

268

:

I'm pretty sure.

269

:

Katie: Okay.

270

:

I like it.

271

:

Hal: if anyone has any info on,

an, or any more intel on, the

272

:

Father Dowling murder, she wrote

connection, please, comment below

273

:

Katie: Yes.

274

:

Good call.

275

:

Or if you watch that or find reruns.

276

:

I like, I like a lot of these old

shows, like Murder She Wrote is

277

:

still on, reruns, are still on,

on, you know, one of those like 0.2

278

:

Hal: Like me TV

279

:

Katie: Yes, exactly.

280

:

Mm-Hmm.

281

:

Hal: Yeah.

282

:

Oh, yeah.

283

:

I, you know, I love the sitcoms of the

seventies, like the odd couple and a taxi.

284

:

Katie: Oh

285

:

yeah,

286

:

Hal: uh, that, that's some good stuff.

287

:

Katie: I did watch the newer

version of The Odd Couple with,

288

:

Hal: Oh.

289

:

Katie: Thomas Lennon

290

:

Hal: Thomas

291

:

Lennon, and, yeah.

292

:

Matthew Perry.

293

:

Katie: Perry.

294

:

Hal: Yep.

295

:

Katie: I quite liked it.

296

:

I, but I never saw the original version.

297

:

Yeah.

298

:

Hal: The original's.

299

:

Fantastic.

300

:

I, it's so good that I couldn't even

bring myself to watch the new one.

301

:

I'm sure

302

:

Katie: then I'm gonna add it to my list.

303

:

Hal: its own right, but it's, yeah.

304

:

Jack Klugman and Tony Randall,

305

:

uh,

306

:

Katie: Mm.

307

:

Hal: the, main characters, uh, good stuff.

308

:

Good stuff.

309

:

Katie: Added to my list.

310

:

Now some finales that weren't

necessarily in the top ratings.

311

:

We have the Golden Palace.

312

:

Speaking of spinoffs, that

was the Golden Girls spinoff.

313

:

Hal: Oh, I never, I don't remember

ever watching the Golden Palace.

314

:

Katie: I only recently watched it,

I hadn't up until a few years ago.

315

:

It is, it's without Dorothy.

316

:

Hal: Ah,

317

:

Katie: So Yeah.

318

:

Also saved by the bell.

319

:

This was their last year.

320

:

Hal: Oh yeah.

321

:

total nineties classic

322

:

Katie: It will be replaced with,

saved by the Bell, the college

323

:

years as well as the new class.

324

:

Those shows

325

:

premiered this year.

326

:

Yeah.

327

:

Hal: Gotcha.

328

:

Katie: also David Letterman switches.

329

:

So he, his last year with late night

with David Letterman on NBC is this year.

330

:

Um, this was its finale year, and

then he started on CBS, so that was,

331

:

Hal: I love, love David Letterman.

332

:

I remember that growing up when I

was just, when I was just a kid in

333

:

like grade school, I used to stay up.

334

:

Way past my bedtime and watch the 1230

to one 30 David Letterman show on NBC

335

:

after The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

336

:

And, oh, Katie, I'll tell

you what that was like.

337

:

It really blew my mind.

338

:

I was like, oh, this is funny.

339

:

This like, it really helped

shape my, funny bone.

340

:

I love David Letterman.

341

:

Katie: He has, he's definitely different.

342

:

there's something about David

that's different than the

343

:

rest of the late night guys,

344

:

for sure.

345

:

Hal: Yeah, he was a game changer.

346

:

he really pushed the boundaries

with humor and was really inventive.

347

:

And I think, Conan O'Brien took

that mantle as far as being, because

348

:

in that 1230 spot you can be a

little bit more edgy and cuckoo

349

:

and weird, than the 1130 when, you

know, regular folks are still up.

350

:

You get the weirdos come out for the 1230

351

:

Katie: Right.

352

:

Decent people are trying to sleep.

353

:

,

Hal: exactly.

354

:

Katie: also, ending this year was major

dad designing women a different world,

355

:

Doogie, Houser md, which was like a pheno.

356

:

I very much remember watching that show.

357

:

Yeah,

358

:

Hal: Yeah,

359

:

Can I ask you an, one

more trivia question?

360

:

Katie: please do.

361

:

Hal: Can you name, can you

tell me what the major dad

362

:

designing women connection is?

363

:

Katie: I didn't watch Major Dad, so No.

364

:

Hal: Gerald McCraney, who played

major Dad was married to, Delta Burke,

365

:

Katie: In the show.

366

:

Hal: designing Woman, no, in IRL

367

:

Katie: Oh.

368

:

Oh,

369

:

okay.

370

:

Hal: Mm-Hmm.

371

:

Katie: Good one.

372

:

I, what's the, um, Annie Potts?

373

:

Is she the one that's in, I

don't know if it's still on, but

374

:

Hal: She's in designing women.

375

:

Oh, young Sheldon Yep.

376

:

What, is She his grandmother or

377

:

Katie: Yeah.

378

:

Yeah.

379

:

She's good in that.

380

:

Hal: she was in Ghostbusters.

381

:

Katie: Yeah, she was.

382

:

Yeah.

383

:

Hal: Yeah.

384

:

Katie: the Swamp thing, do

you remember this show at all?

385

:

Hal: vaguely.

386

:

I should, I think I'm

losing some nerd cred,

387

:

Katie: Well, it was on the USA network,

so it was kind of one of those, I don't

388

:

know if it lasted very long, but I can,

389

:

I do recall.

390

:

Hal: J.

391

:

White.

392

:

Katie: No, I don't think so.

393

:

it was a, it was strange.

394

:

It was very strange.

395

:

Like it was an actual, like swamp

396

:

Hal: looking it up.

397

:

the swamp thing.

398

:

It's a famous comic book

399

:

Katie: yeah.

400

:

Yeah.

401

:

Hal: and swamping television series.

402

:

Katie: Double Dare And

this was the Nickelodeon

403

:

Hal: oh, I loved that.

404

:

Katie: yeah.

405

:

With the slime, like kooky things.

406

:

Hal: Yes.

407

:

Katie: and then these

three, I loved these three.

408

:

This was their final

year for Life Goes On.

409

:

do

410

:

you remember that show

with, was it Patty Lone?

411

:

Was the mom

412

:

Hal: yeah.

413

:

And it was about a kid

with Down Syndrome and it

414

:

was like a,

415

:

Yeah,

416

:

Katie: was his name.

417

:

Hal: it was a sweet show.

418

:

And I'll

419

:

Katie: It was,

420

:

Hal: theme song.

421

:

Katie: yeah.

422

:

And the Wonder Years.

423

:

So those two had a similar feel

424

:

Hal: Oh, yeah.

425

:

Katie: Wonder Years in Life goes on and

426

:

then Perfect Strangers.

427

:

This was also the last year for Perfect

428

:

Strangers.

429

:

Did you watch that one?

430

:

Hal: yeah.

431

:

I absolutely watch Perfect

Strangers all the time.

432

:

And, oh, what the heck are the names of

the, Bronson Pin show and the, oh, me, but

433

:

Katie: Larry's per, yeah.

434

:

Hal: yeah, his c his cousin.

435

:

In the show,

436

:

not, uh, yeah.

437

:

Balal, he's cousin is having

a little bit of a resurgence.

438

:

He's pops up every now and again.

439

:

Oh, he was on She Hulk, he was

on, he had a great part in one

440

:

of the truly underrated shows

of the past 15 years or so.

441

:

HBO's The Leftovers.

442

:

I got

443

:

Katie: The Leftovers.

444

:

What?

445

:

Does that sound familiar Mark?

446

:

Yep.

447

:

yes.

448

:

I

449

:

think you're right.

450

:

You're onto the right.

451

:

Hal: Mark Lynn Baker

452

:

Katie: Yeah.

453

:

A good call.

454

:

Yep.

455

:

Hal: Whew.

456

:

Um, he, the the Leftovers is a

show with, oh, who's the, fellow

457

:

with the, jet Black Hair who, uh,

Jennifer Aniston was married to.

458

:

Katie: oh yes,

459

:

I feel like I did see this, Justin throw.

460

:

Is that who you're thinking of?

461

:

Hal: Thoreau.

462

:

Yeah, Justin Thoreau is in it.

463

:

and I was introduced to the actress

that, from that show, Carrie Coon.

464

:

Carrie Coon is fantastic.

465

:

She's been in a bunch of stuff since then.

466

:

But The Leftovers, I will say the

second season of The Leftovers.

467

:

It's a three season show.

468

:

The second season one of the great

seasons of television and, the leftovers

469

:

criminally overlooked and underrated.

470

:

Katie: Okay.

471

:

it seems very familiar to me also.

472

:

Regina King isn't, it

473

:

Hal: Oh, yeah.

474

:

Yep.

475

:

Katie: Yeah, I'm gonna have to, it seems

very familiar, but good call on that.

476

:

some

477

:

additional premieres for 93

478

:

Hal: Yes.

479

:

Katie: Boy Meets Worlds.

480

:

Um,

481

:

that was a little bit, I feel like I'm

like one year a little too old for that.

482

:

Like I watched

483

:

it but I

484

:

Hal: way about a lot of stuff.

485

:

Katie: yeah,

486

:

I watched it, but I didn't love

487

:

Hal: bit of it.

488

:

I know, a friend of mine

is, married to Topanga,

489

:

Katie: She is one of

490

:

those girls, like her and Winnie from

491

:

Hal: The Wonder Years.

492

:

Katie: the Wonder Years.

493

:

I feel like a lot of guys

had big crushes on those two.

494

:

Hal: Mm-Hmm.

495

:

absolutely.

496

:

Heartthrobs of the

497

:

nineties.

498

:

Katie: yeah.

499

:

Um, I was obsessed.

500

:

So the nineties, this is like the

mid nineties, like . , Ricky Lake.

501

:

This was her premiere.

502

:

The talk shows of the

503

:

nineties, like Jenny Jones, Maury

Povich, Ricky Lake, like all of those

504

:

were Montel Williams,

505

:

Hal: Mm-Hmm.

506

:

Katie: all of that.

507

:

.

Hal: Daytime talk

508

:

Katie: Loved that.

509

:

Hal: Yeah.

510

:

Fun stuff.

511

:

Katie: And then we have

Beavis and Butthead

512

:

Hal: Oh, fun.

513

:

Cool.

514

:

Katie: Yep.

515

:

I loved it.

516

:

let's see.

517

:

NYPD blue.

518

:

This was its premier season.

519

:

Hal: Oh yeah, that was, you know, they,

didn't, they introduced like breaking

520

:

some barriers we saw Dennis Franz's

521

:

Katie: Yes.

522

:

That was such a big deal.

523

:

Yeah.

524

:

And

525

:

what's the,

526

:

the dark haired,

527

:

Hal: Jimmy

528

:

Katie: Jimmy

529

:

Smiths was like a heartthrob, I feel like

530

:

for the older,

531

:

Hal: then David Caruso.

532

:

Katie: Yeah.

533

:

Mm-Hmm.

534

:

Oh, I forgot.

535

:

Yeah, it was, it, you're right about

it being, like barrier breaking.

536

:

I think one of my favorite

shows of all time, this is

537

:

its premier season, the nanny,

538

:

Hal: Oh yeah.

539

:

Fran Drescher.

540

:

Who?

541

:

Uh,

542

:

Katie: the writer strike.

543

:

Hal: question.

544

:

Yes.

545

:

she is president of the

Screen Actor's Guild.

546

:

Katie: She

547

:

is,

548

:

I loved seeing her.

549

:

she's one of my favorite people.

550

:

I really like her a lot.

551

:

Hal: Oh yeah.

552

:

she's, she, and she's got a lot

of, she's got a lot of Moxie.

553

:

Katie: Yes.

554

:

Good word for her.

555

:

Indeed.

556

:

Hal: Oh yeah.

557

:

Katie: Then we have Anna

Maniacs and Living Single.

558

:

Those are the only other premieres that

I thought y'all might be interested in.

559

:

Hal: Nice.

560

:

Katie: 93.

561

:

Okay.

562

:

And the particular week,

we're gonna move on to music.

563

:

Top 10 Billboards for the

th,:

564

:

Mariah Carey's Hero is

the number one song.

565

:

Hal: Oh, sure.

566

:

Um, I'm not sure, 'cause isn't there,

there's also like a Enrique Iglesias hero,

567

:

Katie: Yeah.

568

:

Good.

569

:

Yes, there is.

570

:

Hal: and then there's, uh.

571

:

Isn't there?

572

:

Like, oh, the wallflowers or,

oh, no, we could be heroes.

573

:

that's David Bowie covered by

the, uh, wallflowers in the

574

:

Katie: There's probably a ton

of songs that are either called

575

:

Hero or Have Hero in them,

576

:

I would imagine.

577

:

Yeah.

578

:

Again, by Janet Jackson is

the number two song, and then

579

:

Hal: can I, a, can I ask you a

Mariah Carey related question?

580

:

Katie: is it About Christmas?

581

:

Hal: Yes.

582

:

How do you feel about

all I Want for Christmas?

583

:

Katie: Um, I do think it's good, but

it's just gotten a little too, you know

584

:

how when something gets popular it,

585

:

it kind of loses its, it loses

its, luster a little bit.

586

:

I, that's kind of how I feel about it.

587

:

Hal: Yeah.

588

:

I'm not a, I'm not,

yeah, I feel similarly.

589

:

I'm not a hater, but it's, you know,

like all the, every like ubiquitous,

590

:

um, Holiday Christmas song gets

overplayed at around this time of year.

591

:

So, I think good for

Mariah Cash, those checks.

592

:

Girl

593

:

Katie: Yeah, exactly, exactly.

594

:

Hal: need me to tell her.

595

:

Yeah.

596

:

Katie: You heard of a little

band called Ace of Bass and how

597

:

popular they were at this time.

598

:

Hal: Oh yeah.

599

:

I remember them from back in the day.

600

:

Yep.

601

:

Katie: All that she wants,

602

:

Hal: wants,

603

:

Katie: that's the number three song.

604

:

Yeah.

605

:

Um.

606

:

So I remember this being enormous, and

it's wild to me to think meatloaf just

607

:

as a, as an artist.

608

:

Hal: mm-Hmm.

609

:

Katie: but I do anything for

love, but I won't do that was the

610

:

number four song at this time.

611

:

Hal: Yes.

612

:

Oh my goodness.

613

:

And, I don't know if we ever found

out what it was that he wouldn't do,

614

:

Katie: I mean, but just the name him.

615

:

Like, what?

616

:

It's, I don't, I love that song and I

was there for the nineties of it all, but

617

:

what's his, what's the deal with meatloaf?

618

:

Hal: You know, he was

big in the seventies.

619

:

He had that song Paradise by

the Dashboard Light, which is a

620

:

classic, a classic rock,

rock station classic.

621

:

And, he had some really fine moment

in Rocky Horror Picture Show, uh,

622

:

Katie: Mm

623

:

Hal: is a cult

624

:

classic.

625

:

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

626

:

Hal: but then he kind of, it feels like

he disappeared for like over a decade

627

:

Katie: Yeah.

628

:

Hal: and then boom, he came, back

with that bat outta hell record and,

629

:

uh, anything for love and, yeah.

630

:

And yeah, I don't know what it is that

he won't do, but I think it's real dirty

631

:

Katie: Yeah, yeah.

632

:

I think that's, yeah.

633

:

Uh,

634

:

Hal: Use your

635

:

Katie: yeah.

636

:

Hal: your imagination.

637

:

folks.

638

:

Katie: I thought this

next one I was wrong.

639

:

I knew it was from a movie

All For Love by Brian Adams.

640

:

Rod Stewart.

641

:

And Sting

642

:

was in

643

:

Hal: it from Robin Hood?

644

:

Katie: that's what I thought too.

645

:

But no, it's a similar movie.

646

:

Three Musketeers.

647

:

Hal: Oh,

648

:

gotcha,

649

:

Katie: I totally thought it was Robin Hood

650

:

too, so I had to look it up.

651

:

'cause Robin Hood came out earlier.

652

:

This is 93.

653

:

End of 93.

654

:

that was the number five song.

655

:

Hal: Costner, Robin Hood?

656

:

interesting.

657

:

There've been too many Robin Hoods.

658

:

Katie: there have been.

659

:

Yes.

660

:

Hal: There, there was one just a

couple years ago with Tar Taryn

661

:

Edgerton and Jamie Fox, which is

662

:

Katie: Oh,

663

:

I didn't see that.

664

:

And, I like both of those actors.

665

:

Hal: yeah, and wasn't there

a Russell Crow one as well?

666

:

Katie: And then there was men in tights

667

:

too.

668

:

Hal: Oh, that, well, that's fun.

669

:

That's, yeah, that's my

guy, Mel Brooks again.

670

:

uh,

671

:

Katie: Yeah.

672

:

Hal: uh,

673

:

Katie: spoofs.

674

:

Hal: Yeah.

675

:

Katie: There've been a lot.

676

:

Hal: for my dogs.

677

:

They're, I don't know if you

can hear my dogs going, uh,

678

:

Katie: Oh, don't,

679

:

I totally get it.

680

:

I have to put my dogs like in

their kennels and bribe them

681

:

with treats so that they're quiet

or they would be bothering me.

682

:

Hal: I hear you.

683

:

Yep.

684

:

Katie: Yeah.

685

:

now this song, it's called, have you

heard of this, the number six song,

686

:

gangsta Lean by DRS, which stands for.

687

:

Dirty Rotten scoundrels.

688

:

You'd think it's a rap song, but it's not.

689

:

It's an r and b song.

690

:

Hal: Okay.

691

:

Sometimes

692

:

there's a little bit of crossover,

693

:

Katie: Well, they're dressed very

694

:

Hal: like

695

:

Katie: like in the

696

:

video, I, I am shockingly not familiar

with it, and this is like my jam.

697

:

I loved like rap and r and

b from the nineties, but I

698

:

am

699

:

Hal: no, I still do.

700

:

I, I can't immediately recall it,

701

:

but, um, I might know it if I heard it.

702

:

Katie: But I'll bet you know, the number

seven song, shup by Salt and Peppa,

703

:

Hal: Oh yeah.

704

:

Heck yes.

705

:

Katie: it's still a party song.

706

:

Hal: Dupe.

707

:

Hell yeah.

708

:

No.

709

:

So

710

:

Salt and Peppa knew how to do it.

711

:

Katie: Yeah, they did.

712

:

Yes.

713

:

Hal: Excuse

714

:

Katie: So good.

715

:

That was like an, it's still it has

stand the stood the test of time.

716

:

It comes on now and everybody,

it gets everybody going.

717

:

Hal: Oh, it gets you on the dance floor.

718

:

Katie: Yep.

719

:

Tony Braxton's, breathe

again is number eight.

720

:

She was big

721

:

in the nineties, I feel

722

:

Hal: she had a reality show, right?

723

:

Didn't

724

:

Katie: Yeah.

725

:

Hal: growing up Braxton or something?

726

:

Katie: Which I didn't watch.

727

:

I'm not, I'm the worst person

to talk reality TV with,

728

:

Hal: sure.

729

:

Katie: so,

730

:

but I'm aware that it happened.

731

:

Hal: yes.

732

:

Yes.

733

:

Katie: The next song is, uh, from one of

my favorite albums from one of my favorite

734

:

rappers, Snoop Dogg, what's my name?

735

:

Hal: Oh yeah.

736

:

Katie: actually the debut single from

his very first album, doggy Style

737

:

Hal: Hell

738

:

Katie: and Yeah.

739

:

Hal: And Snoop, he's just, gone

on to become a beloved figure

740

:

in pop culture across the board.

741

:

love Snoop.

742

:

Katie: Yeah.

743

:

He's like friends with Martha

Stewart and Willie Nelson.

744

:

He is got a weed brand and he is

like playing with his grandkids.

745

:

He's like this wholesome,

weeded, smoking grandpa now.

746

:

Hal: Yeah.

747

:

right.

748

:

Katie: it.

749

:

Yeah.

750

:

Hal: Oh, he's the

751

:

best.

752

:

He's the best.

753

:

Katie: And then the number 10

song, is called Said I Loved You,

754

:

but I Lied by Michael Bolton.

755

:

Hal: Gotcha.

756

:

I mean, that guy's got some pipes on him.

757

:

Michael

758

:

Katie: Yes.

759

:

I didn't ever get it though.

760

:

Like I'm, I mean, he can sing

and they're like, love songs,

761

:

but I don't, it's not for me.

762

:

Hal: Yeah.

763

:

He a little too adult contemporary

764

:

Katie: yes, yes.

765

:

Hal: but, but I, you know, I'm

picking up what he's putting down.

766

:

Listen, the guy can belt it, so,

767

:

Katie: I, for some reason

768

:

Hal: I'm not gonna hate.

769

:

Katie: I put him and Kenny G in the same,

770

:

Hal: I feel that

771

:

Katie: same to me.

772

:

I don't know why

773

:

they're different.

774

:

Hal: I feel that energy.

775

:

Katie: all right.

776

:

They're . Were some news and

events from December of 93.

777

:

I definitely did not recall this,

but several times during the month of

778

:

December, there was a record set for

the Dow Jones, like every other day.

779

:

It was like new records set.

780

:

New records set.

781

:

It went up to, 3793.49,

782

:

Hal: Ah,

783

:

those Clinton years, the economy

784

:

was booming,

785

:

Katie: yeah, indeed.

786

:

Now this is, I don't know what qualifier

I wanna put on this, the deadline

787

:

for the Israeli troop withdrawal from

Gaza, they don't, so the Israeli

788

:

troops do not withdraw from Gaza,

even though they're supposed to.

789

:

93 we're literally kind of in

the same, like it's 30 years

790

:

later and it's

791

:

Hal: Some things never change.

792

:

Some things never change.

793

:

Katie: Yeah.

794

:

Hal: yeah.

795

:

Let's, um, move on because I

could talk about this and it

796

:

would get very depressing.

797

:

Katie: Okay.

798

:

Yes.

799

:

I know sometimes the news and

800

:

events, I gotta say, are

usually kind of depressing,

801

:

,

like a lot of

802

:

Hal: I, I hear you

803

:

Katie: Yes.

804

:

Hal: sure.

805

:

Katie: Shannon Doherty is fired as

Brenda from Beverly Hills 9 0 2 1 oh.

806

:

Do you remember

807

:

that?

808

:

I vaguely do.

809

:

Hal: Yes, I remember she

was sort of the bad girl

810

:

of the show.

811

:

Um, you know, she's going

through stuff, tough stuff.

812

:

I know she's been battling, um, cancer.

813

:

so yeah, sad to hear.

814

:

But, I remember her being, oh,

a lot of tabloid headlines for

815

:

Shannon Dougherty back in the day.

816

:

Katie: before the internet.

817

:

The grocery store tablets.

818

:

Indeed.

819

:

But I don't, this was only

820

:

in 93.

821

:

I don't remember it happening

that early in the show.

822

:

But anyway, then, one of the

most famous MTV Unplugged.

823

:

Was the Nirvana performance?

824

:

Hal: Oh yeah.

825

:

Yep.

826

:

Good

827

:

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

828

:

Hal: they covered the David Bowie song,

man Who Sold the World, and yeah, just

829

:

Nirvana, Kurt Cobain gone too soon.

830

:

Katie: Yeah.

831

:

Agreed.

832

:

let's see, the sign, speaking of Ace

of Bass, they were huge apparently

833

:

in 93 because the single, the sign

comes out and nine in 94, so like

834

:

a month later, billboard, it was

named Billboard Song of the year.

835

:

Hal: How about that

836

:

Katie: The sign

837

:

was, yeah.

838

:

Hal: killing it?

839

:

Katie: so now there's a,

there's some depressing stuff.

840

:

We'll do this and then deaths,

and then come back to weddings.

841

:

Todd Bridges is arrested.

842

:

Remember when he was

843

:

Hal: Oh, just the whole

cast of different strokes.

844

:

sad.

845

:

Dana Plato, gone too soon.

846

:

The, the sister?

847

:

Yep.

848

:

Katie: Todd is still alive though.

849

:

I think he's maybe turned, but he

was, um, transporting methamphetamine

850

:

and that's what he was arrested for.

851

:

But yeah, I

852

:

Hal: he trying to pay the bills.

853

:

Katie: Yeah.

854

:

Hal: Uh,

855

:

Katie: That money, that

different strokes money ran out.

856

:

Hal: Ran out.

857

:

Ran out.

858

:

Maybe they had some bad business managers.

859

:

Who

860

:

Katie: Well, they were

child actors, so I'm sure.

861

:

Yeah.

862

:

Hal: Mm-Hmm.

863

:

Katie: Um, yes.

864

:

I'm gonna do deaths and then come

back so that we kind of end the

865

:

news and events on a good note.

866

:

But

867

:

a few famous folks died, including

Colombian drug, Lord Pablo Escobar.

868

:

Hal: Oh yeah.

869

:

yeah.

870

:

Wanna know his story?

871

:

Check out Narcos

872

:

Katie: Good show.

873

:

Good show.

874

:

Yeah.

875

:

He was

876

:

shot to death by

877

:

Hal: show that Oh, yeah.

878

:

the Hail of Gunfire.

879

:

also you can learn about Pablo

Escobar on a show that my wife

880

:

was, the showrunner for on Netflix

called How to Become a Mob Boss.

881

:

How to

882

:

Become a Mob Boss.

883

:

Well.

884

:

Katie: I've seen it.

885

:

It's great.

886

:

Oh, everyone check that out.

887

:

Hal: uh, co-wrote, my wife co-wrote,

most of the episodes, and she

888

:

got to interview, Sammy the Bull

Gravano and all these mobsters.

889

:

so yeah, kudos to her.

890

:

Katie: Indeed.

891

:

That's amazing.

892

:

Hal: fun show narrated by Peter Dinkle

893

:

Katie: Yeah.

894

:

Hal: Netflix.

895

:

Katie: Yes.

896

:

that's fascinating.

897

:

Well, you're a lucky, lucky man.

898

:

How?

899

:

Hal: Indeed, I am

900

:

Katie: Frank Zappa also dies

from prostate cancer at 52.

901

:

I didn't realize

902

:

he, yeah.

903

:

He was, in, aside from being a

rock guitarist and composer, he

904

:

was an activist and a filmmaker.

905

:

I don't know if I knew that.

906

:

Hal: He was really ahead of his time and

well-spoken when it came to, politics.

907

:

Like I've seen him on, like

their clips floating around.

908

:

If you Google Frank Zappa, political

debate, with, you know, him this

909

:

long-haired musician, I think he might've

cut his hair and some of the clips.

910

:

But, really going toe to toe with

some of these political talking heads,

911

:

about, you know, about, you know,

just various issues in politics.

912

:

you know, really thoughtful

guy and interesting.

913

:

the, you know, there was a great one.

914

:

One more thing about Frank Zappa.

915

:

There was a great documentary about

one of my favorite bands from the

916

:

1960s and seventies, the Velvet

Underground and, how they had a rivalry.

917

:

Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground

had a really bitter rivalry

918

:

with Frank Zappa and his, his.

919

:

group the Mothers of Invention.

920

:

So it's some cool stories in

921

:

Katie: Oh,

922

:

Hal: Velvet Underground

documentary that's on, apple

923

:

Katie: interesting.

924

:

Hal: tv.

925

:

Katie: I, I saw sh like a comedy show.

926

:

It was a fundraiser for Pitbull

awareness in Washington DC several years

927

:

Hal: Oh.

928

:

To, so to make people, aware of Mr.

929

:

Worldwide.

930

:

Mr.

931

:

3 0

932

:

Katie: Ah, yeah.

933

:

. Yes.

934

:

'cause he 'cause he

needs more, awareness.

935

:

Yep.

936

:

Yep.

937

:

but his

938

:

Frank's,

939

:

Hal: talking about the dogs.

940

:

Katie: Frank's daughter, moon, is it

941

:

Moon?

942

:

She was the mc of the show, so, yeah.

943

:

Hal: Amazing.

944

:

Katie: and then Brandon, Tina,

do you remember the trans man

945

:

that was murdered at age 21?

946

:

Uh, Hillary

947

:

Swank played,

948

:

Hal: yes.

949

:

Played in Boys

950

:

Don't Cry.

951

:

Yeah.

952

:

Uh, tragic,

953

:

tragic stuff.

954

:

Katie: Very.

955

:

So let's move on some

956

:

Hal: cry.

957

:

A beau,

958

:

beautiful, tragic

959

:

film.

960

:

Uh, one of Hi, one of Hillary Swank's,

two Oscars, what's her other Oscar for?

961

:

Katie: a million dollar baby.

962

:

Hal: Ding.

963

:

Katie: Yeah.

964

:

Yeah.

965

:

she's great.

966

:

Hal: Yeah.

967

:

Katie: so some weddings then

to get us off of the death ik.

968

:

Donald Trump marries Marla

Maples in December of 93.

969

:

They divorced

970

:

in 99 9.

971

:

comedian Rodney Dangerfield

at age 72 was Joan Child.

972

:

At Silver's Wedding

Chapel in Vegas, and they,

973

:

Hal: about it?

974

:

Katie: they actually stayed married

until he passed away, in:

975

:

Hal: I guess apparently

she gave him some respect.

976

:

Katie: Did he want some respect?

977

:

Was that a famous line of his

978

:

Hal: that's like his most famous line.

979

:

Hey, I don't get no

980

:

Katie: Oh,

981

:

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

982

:

Yes.

983

:

I haven't seen a Rodney Dangerfield

movie or like standup or

984

:

anything in a long time, so yeah.

985

:

Yeah.

986

:

Hal: check out Back to School Caddy Shack.

987

:

But yeah, his sta like, that was

his like ubiquitous line like that.

988

:

I was always be like,

oh, I got no respect.

989

:

I got no respect.

990

:

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

991

:

, you're right.

992

:

Hal: old clips of him on

talk shows or anything?

993

:

Katie: the Canadian country singer

songwriter Shania Twain Weds, the

994

:

South

995

:

Hal: I thought you were

gonna say Crystal Gale.

996

:

I thought you were gonna say Crystal Gale

997

:

Katie: No, I don't even

know who Crystal Gale is.

998

:

Hal: a Canadian songstress

999

:

Katie: Oh,

:

00:35:41,638 --> 00:35:41,858

no.

:

00:35:41,963 --> 00:35:43,093

Hal: from a bygone era.

:

00:35:43,318 --> 00:35:44,018

Katie: Oh, got it.

:

00:35:44,413 --> 00:35:46,973

Hal: Twain, but Shania Twain, and she's

back with that red hair looking good.

:

00:35:47,488 --> 00:35:48,618

Katie: Yeah, she, I remember

:

00:35:48,733 --> 00:35:49,013

Hal: marry.

:

00:35:49,218 --> 00:35:54,498

Katie: a, she married a record

producer, Robert Mutt Lang.

:

00:35:54,538 --> 00:36:01,468

I feel like I've heard of him, but they

divorced in:

:

00:36:01,488 --> 00:36:07,268

you know, married and divorced, Billy

Ray Cyrus Weds, Letitia, Tish Finley,

:

00:36:07,848 --> 00:36:10,268

and they stayed together until last year.

:

00:36:10,748 --> 00:36:11,788

Apparently they divorced in

:

00:36:11,788 --> 00:36:19,708

22 then, uh, a brief marriage

between Wayne Brady and Diane Lasso.

:

00:36:20,218 --> 00:36:21,468

They were only married for

:

00:36:21,518 --> 00:36:22,158

a year and a half

:

00:36:23,233 --> 00:36:27,003

Hal: Diane Lasso the mother of Ted Lasso.

:

00:36:30,218 --> 00:36:30,438

Katie: Um,

:

00:36:31,993 --> 00:36:32,523

Hal: Just kidding.

:

00:36:32,533 --> 00:36:33,243

One's a real person.

:

00:36:33,293 --> 00:36:33,723

One's a

:

00:36:33,948 --> 00:36:40,958

Katie: I was just gonna say, um, I didn't

write down what she did, which is maybe it

:

00:36:41,203 --> 00:36:42,203

Hal: I have no idea who Diane

:

00:36:42,348 --> 00:36:42,638

Katie: Yeah.

:

00:36:42,798 --> 00:36:43,818

I usually put down what

:

00:36:43,913 --> 00:36:44,713

Hal: inventor of the rope.

:

00:36:45,873 --> 00:36:46,343

Maybe she

:

00:36:46,398 --> 00:36:46,748

Katie: Lasso.

:

00:36:46,848 --> 00:36:47,548

ha ha ha.

:

00:36:48,438 --> 00:36:48,788

Maybe.

:

00:36:50,058 --> 00:36:51,388

Alright, we're almost to the movie.

:

00:36:52,288 --> 00:36:58,318

So Tombstone was the number seven movie

at the box office in December of 93.

:

00:36:59,218 --> 00:37:02,358

But there were some

other really big releases

:

00:37:02,668 --> 00:37:03,288

Hal: for the year

:

00:37:03,588 --> 00:37:04,248

or, uh,

:

00:37:04,318 --> 00:37:04,438

Katie: December.

:

00:37:04,958 --> 00:37:05,118

December,

:

00:37:05,548 --> 00:37:06,448

Hal: oh, just December.

:

00:37:06,628 --> 00:37:09,568

Oh, so a tombstone not that

great at the box office.

:

00:37:09,778 --> 00:37:10,068

Katie: yeah.

:

00:37:10,428 --> 00:37:11,948

I mean, we'll talk

:

00:37:12,308 --> 00:37:16,468

about, so yeah, it like tripled its budget

:

00:37:17,798 --> 00:37:18,088

Hal: Okay.

:

00:37:18,958 --> 00:37:19,298

Katie: so it

:

00:37:19,298 --> 00:37:21,018

made money, but Yeah.

:

00:37:21,078 --> 00:37:22,098

Hal: At least didn't take a loss.

:

00:37:22,148 --> 00:37:22,618

Katie: let's see.

:

00:37:23,278 --> 00:37:23,498

Mrs.

:

00:37:23,498 --> 00:37:25,808

Doubtfire, the Pelican

:

00:37:25,808 --> 00:37:26,088

Brief.

:

00:37:28,028 --> 00:37:30,208

And then check out all the sequels.

:

00:37:30,238 --> 00:37:32,968

Well, we already talked about

Three Musketeers, but then the

:

00:37:32,968 --> 00:37:33,568

rest of the

:

00:37:33,708 --> 00:37:36,738

Hal: the sequel, you know what the

sequel to the, Pelican Brief was?

:

00:37:37,938 --> 00:37:39,118

The Pelican Boxers.

:

00:37:39,978 --> 00:37:45,398

Katie: oh my God, I see now that you're

a new dad, how's spring and Dad jokes?

:

00:37:45,898 --> 00:37:46,798

Is that, is that what

:

00:37:46,798 --> 00:37:47,038

happens?

:

00:37:47,048 --> 00:37:48,828

Hal: got, you got that, you got that right

:

00:37:48,828 --> 00:37:52,388

Katie .I was doing it even

before we had the baby

:

00:37:53,858 --> 00:37:54,518

Katie: Oh my God.

:

00:37:54,568 --> 00:37:57,938

okay, so check out all

of the sequels we have.

:

00:37:57,938 --> 00:38:00,938

Waynes World Two Sister Act Two, Beethoven

:

00:38:00,938 --> 00:38:03,458

Second, and Adams Family Values.

:

00:38:04,108 --> 00:38:05,138

Those were all like

:

00:38:05,208 --> 00:38:06,738

huge movies in December of

:

00:38:06,738 --> 00:38:07,058

93.

:

00:38:07,338 --> 00:38:13,808

Hal: Act two has the best, uh, subtitle

of any movie Sister Act two Back in the

:

00:38:13,808 --> 00:38:15,208

Habit, talking about dad jokes.

:

00:38:15,208 --> 00:38:16,088

That's a great pun.

:

00:38:16,308 --> 00:38:17,768

And Adam's Family Values.

:

00:38:18,588 --> 00:38:23,498

Um, had a song by, uh,

someone I loved as a kid.

:

00:38:24,158 --> 00:38:24,618

Mc Hammer.

:

00:38:25,153 --> 00:38:26,053

Katie: Too legit to quit.

:

00:38:27,238 --> 00:38:27,978

Hal: Too Legit.

:

00:38:28,558 --> 00:38:29,338

Too legit.

:

00:38:29,488 --> 00:38:29,778

Quit.

:

00:38:31,053 --> 00:38:33,753

Katie: He actually, there was a

song in the original movie that

:

00:38:33,753 --> 00:38:35,673

he had too, and it's escaping me.

:

00:38:36,153 --> 00:38:38,673

I love the Adams family movies, but yeah.

:

00:38:38,988 --> 00:38:39,728

Hal: Fun morale.

:

00:38:39,728 --> 00:38:40,488

Julia, great.

:

00:38:41,448 --> 00:38:42,208

Angelica Houston.

:

00:38:42,278 --> 00:38:42,568

Yeah.

:

00:38:42,568 --> 00:38:43,168

How would you go wrong

:

00:38:43,168 --> 00:38:43,408

with that

:

00:38:43,433 --> 00:38:43,913

Katie: it's so good.

:

00:38:44,173 --> 00:38:44,593

So good.

:

00:38:45,343 --> 00:38:45,633

Okay.

:

00:38:46,553 --> 00:38:49,433

I have to ask guests a few questions

before we talk about the movie.

:

00:38:49,533 --> 00:38:56,553

So my first season of Retro Made is

around who I deem the ultimate everyman,

:

00:38:57,063 --> 00:38:59,673

Kurt Russell and Patrick Swayze.

:

00:39:00,133 --> 00:39:02,913

Do you have any particular, and

if you don't, that's fine too.

:

00:39:03,213 --> 00:39:05,793

Either thoughts or fandom to

share about either of them.

:

00:39:07,693 --> 00:39:08,913

Hal: You know, I love both.

:

00:39:09,453 --> 00:39:15,513

and they're they're both iconic,

eighties, nineties actors.

:

00:39:15,613 --> 00:39:18,033

We lost Patrick Swayze, way too soon.

:

00:39:18,083 --> 00:39:21,393

you know, I can't think of Kurt

Russell without, thinking about

:

00:39:22,173 --> 00:39:24,968

his partnerships with John

:

00:39:24,968 --> 00:39:25,433

Carpenter.

:

00:39:25,693 --> 00:39:30,763

So many great flicks, big trouble, milk,

China, the thing, escape from New York.

:

00:39:30,833 --> 00:39:32,453

Just, so great.

:

00:39:32,733 --> 00:39:33,813

I love Kurt Russell.

:

00:39:34,593 --> 00:39:38,053

Um, and he just seems like a fun guy,

like Kurt Ru, like you talk about

:

00:39:38,053 --> 00:39:39,213

the every man like Kurt Russell.

:

00:39:39,403 --> 00:39:41,433

I've, I've interviewed him, once or twice.

:

00:39:41,933 --> 00:39:44,343

last time was for, uh,

guardians of the Galaxy Two.

:

00:39:45,043 --> 00:39:48,073

I did that junket, but, he

was super gracious and cool.

:

00:39:48,453 --> 00:39:51,703

Uh, he seems like it'd be just

like an awesome dude to like throw

:

00:39:51,703 --> 00:39:53,383

back a few drinks with, you know,

:

00:39:53,673 --> 00:39:55,053

Katie: That's what a lot of people say.

:

00:39:55,193 --> 00:39:55,623

And I

:

00:39:55,623 --> 00:39:55,983

see that.

:

00:39:56,133 --> 00:39:56,423

Yeah.

:

00:39:56,803 --> 00:39:57,093

Hal: Yeah.

:

00:39:57,093 --> 00:39:59,893

He just seems like a, an awesome dude.

:

00:40:00,273 --> 00:40:02,353

and, he, yeah, he was

in Hate Hateful Eight

:

00:40:02,713 --> 00:40:03,233

recently, right?

:

00:40:03,323 --> 00:40:06,953

the, the Tarantino flick, love

Kurt Russell and then Pa Patrick

:

00:40:07,233 --> 00:40:08,633

Swayze, like, what a heartthrob.

:

00:40:08,853 --> 00:40:15,423

And, but he would kick ass and, just, we

watched him grow up in the Outsiders and

:

00:40:15,423 --> 00:40:20,013

then Red Dawn and, um, he's, he's awesome.

:

00:40:20,273 --> 00:40:23,653

And here's a actual fun fact, true story.

:

00:40:23,923 --> 00:40:27,853

Like I was just on Etsy

looking for weird baby onesies.

:

00:40:28,053 --> 00:40:31,003

'cause my wife and I, we've got

a little one, four month old and

:

00:40:31,243 --> 00:40:34,763

I bought her a onesie that she

grew out of, like a week later.

:

00:40:35,223 --> 00:40:39,043

Um, that, uh, and had a picture

of Patrick Swayze on it.

:

00:40:39,043 --> 00:40:40,683

And it said Crazy for Swayze

:

00:40:41,578 --> 00:40:43,458

Katie: I thought I was gonna say

something about don't put baby

:

00:40:43,458 --> 00:40:44,778

in the corner or in a corner

:

00:40:44,958 --> 00:40:46,858

Hal: Oh, that's also acceptable also.

:

00:40:46,858 --> 00:40:49,578

That would be very, uh,

apt, uh, for the vape.

:

00:40:49,718 --> 00:40:50,498

But yeah, it,

:

00:40:50,498 --> 00:40:55,098

it was like, because when you, if when

you go to some of these sites, they have

:

00:40:55,098 --> 00:41:01,928

these, the, these, these logos that you

can have printed up on a mug on anything.

:

00:41:02,348 --> 00:41:06,048

So I'm like, oh my goodness, that'd

be so weird to put on a baby onesie

:

00:41:06,498 --> 00:41:09,408

crazy for Swayze with a picture

of Patrick Swayze and I got it.

:

00:41:09,408 --> 00:41:10,528

And it was, it was awesome.

:

00:41:10,548 --> 00:41:11,728

We got a picture of it somewhere.

:

00:41:11,938 --> 00:41:12,438

Katie: Oh, cute.

:

00:41:12,988 --> 00:41:13,838

Yeah, you should.

:

00:41:13,938 --> 00:41:14,338

Hal: a little picture.

:

00:41:14,728 --> 00:41:15,488

Katie: I love it also.

:

00:41:15,488 --> 00:41:19,008

That's really awesome that you were

able to, you got the opportunity

:

00:41:19,008 --> 00:41:20,488

to interview Kurt a few times.

:

00:41:21,388 --> 00:41:21,678

Hal: Yeah.

:

00:41:21,848 --> 00:41:23,178

just, super gracious.

:

00:41:23,398 --> 00:41:26,328

I've interviewed, um, celebrities

who were not gracious.

:

00:41:26,788 --> 00:41:28,488

Uh, I tell you about that another time.

:

00:41:28,488 --> 00:41:30,408

Katie: I was just gonna say, we

need to have a show about that.

:

00:41:30,808 --> 00:41:31,188

'cause I

:

00:41:31,188 --> 00:41:32,228

like the Juicy Goss.

:

00:41:32,658 --> 00:41:32,948

Yeah.

:

00:41:33,018 --> 00:41:36,108

Well I'm very glad to

hear that Kurt was very Ha

:

00:41:36,228 --> 00:41:36,608

Hal: Uh, yeah.

:

00:41:36,708 --> 00:41:38,128

Oh, just, yeah.

:

00:41:38,348 --> 00:41:39,338

And, great guy.

:

00:41:39,478 --> 00:41:40,728

And, yeah, legend.

:

00:41:41,038 --> 00:41:41,648

true legend.

:

00:41:41,948 --> 00:41:46,928

You know, growing up I always

used to associate him for

:

00:41:46,928 --> 00:41:49,248

some reason with Dennis Qua.

:

00:41:49,448 --> 00:41:52,528

I always thought it was like

Russell and Quaid were, really,

:

00:41:53,838 --> 00:41:55,978

had similar career arcs.

:

00:41:56,438 --> 00:41:57,188

but, I feel like,

:

00:41:57,248 --> 00:42:02,288

uh, in retrospect, Kurt Russell

has, you know, both are, you know,

:

00:42:02,518 --> 00:42:05,878

have done plenty, but, I really,

I, Kurt Russell is the actor.

:

00:42:06,078 --> 00:42:07,158

I would gravitate

:

00:42:08,643 --> 00:42:08,933

Katie: more

:

00:42:09,078 --> 00:42:13,568

Hal: far as the better career, more,

more interesting, filmography, et cetera.

:

00:42:13,723 --> 00:42:14,443

Katie: I, I agree.

:

00:42:14,463 --> 00:42:15,963

But I can see the Dennis Quaid thing.

:

00:42:16,383 --> 00:42:22,123

do you, now, do you think that Kurt

Russell and Patrick Swayze, uh, have

:

00:42:22,123 --> 00:42:24,403

any resemblance in how they look?

:

00:42:24,453 --> 00:42:27,543

Hal: well, you definitely

have some damn good hair right

:

00:42:27,543 --> 00:42:27,783

there.

:

00:42:28,363 --> 00:42:33,943

Um, like you got some beautiful mullets

flying in the flapping in the breeze.

:

00:42:34,443 --> 00:42:38,123

Ah, business in the

front party in the back.

:

00:42:38,193 --> 00:42:38,613

Katie: Oh yeah.

:

00:42:38,613 --> 00:42:39,653

They their hair.

:

00:42:40,033 --> 00:42:40,453

Mm-Hmm.

:

00:42:40,493 --> 00:42:41,823

Hal: Yeah, man.

:

00:42:42,983 --> 00:42:46,833

like kings, just two

kings with flowing locks.

:

00:42:47,373 --> 00:42:53,153

Uh, and, I think, Kurt Russell a, a

little bit more rough around the edges.

:

00:42:53,153 --> 00:42:56,003

Patrick Swayze just a beautiful man,

:

00:42:56,233 --> 00:42:56,653

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

:

00:42:57,143 --> 00:43:01,083

Hal: uh, if, you know, remember

him from the Chippendales Sketch

:

00:43:01,223 --> 00:43:01,643

Katie: Oh my

:

00:43:01,843 --> 00:43:02,323

Hal: Saturday Night

:

00:43:02,343 --> 00:43:02,563

Katie: Yes.

:

00:43:02,563 --> 00:43:03,683

Hal: with Chris Farling.

:

00:43:03,933 --> 00:43:04,283

Crazy.

:

00:43:04,623 --> 00:43:04,843

Katie: one.

:

00:43:05,543 --> 00:43:06,803

He is a beautiful man.

:

00:43:06,803 --> 00:43:07,523

and that's a

:

00:43:07,523 --> 00:43:08,243

nice Yes,

:

00:43:08,463 --> 00:43:08,683

yes.

:

00:43:09,023 --> 00:43:09,243

Yes.

:

00:43:09,293 --> 00:43:14,898

well, so that's why Jamie, I ask

everyone this, and so Jamie's comment

:

00:43:14,998 --> 00:43:17,138

was around that, that he thinks they

:

00:43:17,138 --> 00:43:20,388

should have done, brothers

separated at birth movie

:

00:43:20,443 --> 00:43:20,663

Hal: Oh

:

00:43:20,693 --> 00:43:21,223

hell yeah.

:

00:43:21,813 --> 00:43:22,743

That would've been great.

:

00:43:23,563 --> 00:43:25,793

tango and Cash was Kurt

Russell and Stallone.

:

00:43:25,793 --> 00:43:26,033

Yeah.

:

00:43:26,253 --> 00:43:26,993

So there was something like that.

:

00:43:27,213 --> 00:43:28,393

At least a buddy cop or

:

00:43:28,663 --> 00:43:30,963

Katie: It was, you know, it's

funny that you say that because I

:

00:43:31,083 --> 00:43:33,563

actually, I think it was Jamie and

Milo from the eighties and nineties,

:

00:43:33,563 --> 00:43:37,283

overlooked or Uncensored mentioned.

:

00:43:37,283 --> 00:43:39,763

They're like, it should have

been Kurt and Swayze in that

:

00:43:39,833 --> 00:43:41,563

instead of Kurt and Stallone.

:

00:43:41,623 --> 00:43:42,603

And I was like, well,

:

00:43:42,603 --> 00:43:43,363

I'll take all three.

:

00:43:43,493 --> 00:43:44,483

Thank you very much.

:

00:43:44,863 --> 00:43:45,083

But

:

00:43:45,433 --> 00:43:45,723

yeah.

:

00:43:45,933 --> 00:43:46,133

Hal: yeah.

:

00:43:47,033 --> 00:43:48,643

Katie: Alright, well let's get into it.

:

00:43:49,033 --> 00:43:49,643

Tombstone,

:

00:43:55,513 --> 00:43:59,473

it was released on December

25th, Christmas Day 93 rated R.

:

00:43:59,903 --> 00:44:05,033

It's over two hours and it

has a 7.8 rating on IMDB.

:

00:44:06,468 --> 00:44:06,548

Hal: Hmm.

:

00:44:07,433 --> 00:44:10,733

Katie: Now I'm gonna jump around the

order a little bit 'cause there's, the

:

00:44:10,733 --> 00:44:13,213

cast is insane and there's a little bit

:

00:44:13,213 --> 00:44:14,813

of, yeah, it's insane.

:

00:44:15,593 --> 00:44:15,813

But

:

00:44:15,993 --> 00:44:16,573

I'm gonna read

:

00:44:16,648 --> 00:44:20,608

Hal: like, and I didn't even

remember half the actors that pop

:

00:44:20,628 --> 00:44:23,288

up in like small parts and cameos.

:

00:44:23,348 --> 00:44:24,848

I'm sure you'll get to it so I won't spoil

:

00:44:24,883 --> 00:44:27,813

Katie: Well, no, that's exactly why,

that's why I like watching older

:

00:44:27,833 --> 00:44:33,853

movies because they maybe weren't a

big deal at the time, but have gone

:

00:44:33,873 --> 00:44:37,013

on to be, and so you're like, oh,

that's so-and-so from blah, blah blah.

:

00:44:37,673 --> 00:44:38,453

So that's fun.

:

00:44:38,633 --> 00:44:43,213

But I'm gonna read the description

first, just so the characters

:

00:44:43,213 --> 00:44:44,133

might make a little more sense.

:

00:44:44,153 --> 00:44:48,213

So if people haven't seen this movie

in 30 years, or maybe not at all,

:

00:44:48,993 --> 00:44:50,773

it, here's what it's about

:

00:44:51,183 --> 00:44:51,533

after.

:

00:44:51,748 --> 00:44:54,428

Hal: BTW, it's streaming for

free on YouTube right now.

:

00:44:54,523 --> 00:44:55,143

Katie: Is it really?

:

00:44:56,098 --> 00:44:58,698

Hal: It is 'cause YouTube, it's

if you know, 'cause you know,

:

00:44:58,698 --> 00:45:01,658

listen, times are tough and I know

it's the holidays people probably

:

00:45:01,658 --> 00:45:03,178

just empty the bank account to get

:

00:45:03,318 --> 00:45:04,058

gif and everything.

:

00:45:04,598 --> 00:45:10,538

Um, YouTube, which is free, offers

a ton of free movies and there

:

00:45:10,538 --> 00:45:14,738

are often times some really good

classic selections in there.

:

00:45:14,838 --> 00:45:15,658

So don't

:

00:45:15,658 --> 00:45:17,338

sleep on the free movies on YouTube.

:

00:45:17,498 --> 00:45:20,428

I, that's how I re-watched

it, coming into the show today

:

00:45:20,903 --> 00:45:21,713

Katie: Well, I checked.

:

00:45:21,953 --> 00:45:26,403

I didn't check YouTube, but yeah, I, I

signed up for Hulu in order to watch it.

:

00:45:26,823 --> 00:45:27,403

But anyway,

:

00:45:27,418 --> 00:45:28,048

Hal: Right on.

:

00:45:28,713 --> 00:45:29,063

Katie: after

:

00:45:29,173 --> 00:45:33,743

Success, cleaning up Dodge City,

Wyatt Earp moves to Tombstone, Arizona

:

00:45:34,243 --> 00:45:36,143

and wishes to get rich in obscurity.

:

00:45:36,283 --> 00:45:39,023

He meets his brothers there

as well as his old friend.

:

00:45:39,483 --> 00:45:44,303

Doc Holiday, a band of outlaws that

call themselves the Cowboys are

:

00:45:44,303 --> 00:45:47,903

causing problems in the region with

various acts of random violence and

:

00:45:47,903 --> 00:45:52,303

inevitably come to the confrontation

with holiday and the ips, which leads

:

00:45:52,303 --> 00:45:54,383

to a shootout at the Okay Corral.

:

00:45:55,893 --> 00:45:59,593

Now, Kevin Jar was the writer here.

:

00:46:01,173 --> 00:46:05,313

He also wrote Rambo First Blood

part two, where he got a razzie.

:

00:46:05,653 --> 00:46:08,738

He won a razzie for

that, but he, yeah, the,

:

00:46:08,933 --> 00:46:10,173

Hal: was a beloved, like, I

:

00:46:10,173 --> 00:46:11,333

mean, that movie blew up,

:

00:46:12,018 --> 00:46:13,718

Katie: um, the Razzies Hates Stallone.

:

00:46:14,793 --> 00:46:15,083

Like

:

00:46:15,083 --> 00:46:18,203

they, yeah, they, yeah, So there's

a lot of like extra hate there.

:

00:46:18,653 --> 00:46:19,003

Glory.

:

00:46:19,103 --> 00:46:20,163

He also wrote Glory.

:

00:46:20,213 --> 00:46:20,753

Hal: Oh yeah.

:

00:46:20,863 --> 00:46:22,663

Denzel Washington's First Academy Award.

:

00:46:22,733 --> 00:46:23,583

Best supporting actor.

:

00:46:24,043 --> 00:46:24,263

Katie: yes.

:

00:46:24,483 --> 00:46:27,543

And Kevin, the writer here, was

actually nominated for the Golden

:

00:46:27,643 --> 00:46:32,733

Globes for writing that, so he got a

Golden Globe nom and a Razzy, I dunno.

:

00:46:32,733 --> 00:46:34,133

And then he also wrote The Mummy.

:

00:46:34,433 --> 00:46:35,933

So that's Kevin Jar,

:

00:46:36,268 --> 00:46:36,558

Hal: Okay.

:

00:46:37,713 --> 00:46:37,933

Katie: the

:

00:46:38,278 --> 00:46:38,498

Hal: The

:

00:46:38,498 --> 00:46:39,818

Brendan Frazier, mummy.

:

00:46:40,093 --> 00:46:40,313

Katie: yes.

:

00:46:40,313 --> 00:46:40,753

The Brendan

:

00:46:40,753 --> 00:46:41,473

Frazier Mummy.

:

00:46:42,013 --> 00:46:42,233

Yes.

:

00:46:42,238 --> 00:46:44,908

Hal: 'cause there was a god

awful Tom Cruise Mummy a few

:

00:46:44,908 --> 00:46:45,388

years ago.

:

00:46:45,713 --> 00:46:47,093

Katie: it was the Brendan Frazier one.

:

00:46:47,753 --> 00:46:54,763

So there, I don't know if you, the

director is George Peak Hamas, and he

:

00:46:54,883 --> 00:46:59,283

also directed, so speaking of Rambo First

Blood part two, he also directed that

:

00:46:59,583 --> 00:47:01,443

and was nominated for a razzi for that.

:

00:47:02,103 --> 00:47:02,323

And

:

00:47:02,378 --> 00:47:02,798

Hal: Mm-Hmm?

:

00:47:03,358 --> 00:47:05,258

Katie: But he wasn't

the original director.

:

00:47:05,618 --> 00:47:08,568

I don't know if you're aware of

all, there's so much controversy

:

00:47:08,628 --> 00:47:10,408

around directing of this.

:

00:47:10,458 --> 00:47:10,678

Hal: Oh,

:

00:47:11,098 --> 00:47:11,638

do tell.

:

00:47:11,708 --> 00:47:14,838

Katie: yeah, so Stallone

recommended George p Comado

:

00:47:14,838 --> 00:47:15,758

since he had worked with him,

:

00:47:16,288 --> 00:47:16,578

Hal: Yeah.

:

00:47:16,588 --> 00:47:18,928

Katie: on Rambo First Blood

Part Two, and then also Cobra.

:

00:47:19,168 --> 00:47:19,628

Hal: Hey, Kurt.

:

00:47:19,948 --> 00:47:21,468

I could send a guy your way, Kurt.

:

00:47:22,008 --> 00:47:22,688

Katie: I love it.

:

00:47:23,088 --> 00:47:28,208

I also, um, I, I co-host on a Rocky

podcast, , so I'm a big Stallone person.

:

00:47:28,598 --> 00:47:28,888

Yeah.

:

00:47:29,268 --> 00:47:30,968

but the, but I love people's impressions.

:

00:47:31,128 --> 00:47:31,768

I can't do it.

:

00:47:31,778 --> 00:47:35,478

Hal: By the way, there's a new

Rocky store that just opened

:

00:47:35,578 --> 00:47:36,998

in outside of Philadelphia.

:

00:47:37,308 --> 00:47:37,598

Katie: Yeah.

:

00:47:37,818 --> 00:47:39,558

Hal: You need to make a

pilgrimage there, Katie.

:

00:47:39,738 --> 00:47:43,028

Katie: Uh, yeah, there's actually

some you know, insider drama

:

00:47:43,078 --> 00:47:44,748

going on with that too, with,

:

00:47:45,088 --> 00:47:46,828

in the World of Rocky, but yeah.

:

00:47:48,298 --> 00:47:51,638

, Yes, there was a Rocky

day recently, like in

:

00:47:51,658 --> 00:47:52,078

Philly.

:

00:47:52,308 --> 00:47:52,598

Yeah.

:

00:47:52,618 --> 00:47:53,038

Mm-Hmm.

:

00:47:53,188 --> 00:47:53,478

Hal: Yeah.

:

00:47:53,528 --> 00:47:53,748

Katie: so.

:

00:47:55,733 --> 00:48:00,153

Cosmos was supposedly like

a ghost director, and Kurt

:

00:48:00,153 --> 00:48:02,913

Russell was the real director.

:

00:48:03,938 --> 00:48:04,358

Hal: Ah-Huh?

:

00:48:05,043 --> 00:48:07,263

Katie: And I've, Stallone

does this a lot too.

:

00:48:08,063 --> 00:48:09,903

I don't know if you're kind

of aware of that a lot.

:

00:48:09,953 --> 00:48:11,523

Yeah, he'll do that a fair amount too.

:

00:48:11,943 --> 00:48:16,963

So the writer, Kevin Jar, was the

original director, but he got fired.

:

00:48:18,823 --> 00:48:19,113

Hal: Okay.

:

00:48:19,303 --> 00:48:19,593

Katie: Yeah.

:

00:48:20,253 --> 00:48:21,013

I don't know.

:

00:48:21,573 --> 00:48:23,013

I think he was kind of running behind.

:

00:48:23,183 --> 00:48:27,333

There were a number of

reasons maybe why that was.

:

00:48:28,683 --> 00:48:32,863

he was maybe asking for things that

he needed in order to be su successful

:

00:48:32,863 --> 00:48:36,143

and didn't get them, but then they

were given to the ultimate director.

:

00:48:36,143 --> 00:48:40,383

Well, at any rate, they fired him and

needed somebody to step in immediately.

:

00:48:41,303 --> 00:48:41,723

Hal: Mm-Hmm?

:

00:48:42,243 --> 00:48:45,983

Katie: um, so George p cos Matos was able

to do that, he was like, I don't care.

:

00:48:45,983 --> 00:48:46,143

Yes.

:

00:48:46,213 --> 00:48:46,673

I'm on.

:

00:48:48,543 --> 00:48:48,833

Hal: Boom.

:

00:48:49,353 --> 00:48:52,053

Katie: But some other people

that were considered, John

:

00:48:52,073 --> 00:48:53,453

Mc Tiernan was considered,

:

00:48:53,673 --> 00:48:54,133

Hal: Oh yeah.

:

00:48:54,893 --> 00:48:55,773

A classic action

:

00:48:56,133 --> 00:48:56,353

Katie: yes.

:

00:48:56,693 --> 00:49:01,313

but he requested time to

prepare and they said, Nope.

:

00:49:02,153 --> 00:49:05,203

John MIUs was also

considered to take over,

:

00:49:05,213 --> 00:49:05,503

Hal: Okay.

:

00:49:06,443 --> 00:49:11,183

Katie: and then in an interview in the

late nineties, John Carpenter claims

:

00:49:11,653 --> 00:49:14,063

that he almost directed it as well.

:

00:49:14,403 --> 00:49:16,663

So like they went through a lot of,

:

00:49:16,773 --> 00:49:16,893

Hal: else.

:

00:49:17,593 --> 00:49:22,133

Katie: so anyway, cosmos was

ultimately the director, but apparently

:

00:49:22,133 --> 00:49:24,453

behind the scenes Kurt was, yeah,

:

00:49:24,703 --> 00:49:25,123

Hal: Gotcha.

:

00:49:25,563 --> 00:49:26,403

Katie: I didn't know that.

:

00:49:26,943 --> 00:49:27,363

Mm-Hmm.

:

00:49:27,483 --> 00:49:27,773

Hal: Yeah.

:

00:49:28,133 --> 00:49:29,213

Fr a fraught production.

:

00:49:30,673 --> 00:49:30,893

Katie: yes.

:

00:49:31,523 --> 00:49:33,893

I've, we've covered another one

that was kind of like that too.

:

00:49:33,973 --> 00:49:36,133

I wanna say it was Tangled Cash, actually.

:

00:49:36,373 --> 00:49:37,313

Hal: Mm-Hmm mm-Hmm.

:

00:49:37,433 --> 00:49:37,833

. Mm-Hmm.

:

00:49:38,093 --> 00:49:38,513

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

:

00:49:38,783 --> 00:49:39,273

. Alright.

:

00:49:39,273 --> 00:49:42,113

So we have our Kurt Russell, our

everyman, Kurt Russell playing White Earp.

:

00:49:43,213 --> 00:49:43,433

Hal: Yes.

:

00:49:44,173 --> 00:49:49,003

Katie: Val Kilmer gets a lot of praise

for his, portrayal of Doc Holiday in this,

:

00:49:49,863 --> 00:49:50,083

in

:

00:49:50,163 --> 00:49:56,073

Hal: know, Val Kilmer, he he played

some great supporting roles in movies.

:

00:49:56,213 --> 00:49:57,353

He was wonderful in

:

00:49:57,368 --> 00:49:57,788

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

:

00:49:58,093 --> 00:50:02,913

Hal: And then I love

him in the movie Heat.

:

00:50:03,423 --> 00:50:04,793

Heat is one of my favorites.

:

00:50:04,853 --> 00:50:06,793

The Michael Mann crime

film from the nineties.

:

00:50:06,828 --> 00:50:08,998

Katie: with De Niro and Pacino that heat.

:

00:50:09,458 --> 00:50:10,798

Oh, it's so good.

:

00:50:11,028 --> 00:50:11,318

Yeah.

:

00:50:11,348 --> 00:50:11,548

yeah.

:

00:50:11,708 --> 00:50:13,028

I forgot Val Kilmer was in that.

:

00:50:13,058 --> 00:50:14,628

It's been a long time since I've seen it.

:

00:50:15,793 --> 00:50:16,083

Hal: Yeah.

:

00:50:16,083 --> 00:50:17,283

It's an all-time favorite of mine.

:

00:50:17,283 --> 00:50:19,443

I'll watch that anytime.

:

00:50:19,978 --> 00:50:21,918

Katie: I'm gonna actually watch

it probably this weekend, now

:

00:50:21,918 --> 00:50:23,038

that you've brought it into my

:

00:50:23,488 --> 00:50:23,838

brain.

:

00:50:24,018 --> 00:50:24,628

Hal: It's so good.

:

00:50:24,648 --> 00:50:26,748

And they're gonna make

a heat too, as well.

:

00:50:27,233 --> 00:50:28,243

Katie: same people like.

:

00:50:28,328 --> 00:50:29,458

Hal: me, not with De Niro.

:

00:50:29,458 --> 00:50:32,178

They're not gonna de-Age De Niro and

Pacino, but I think they're gonna get

:

00:50:32,178 --> 00:50:34,418

Adam Driver to play the De Niro part.

:

00:50:34,418 --> 00:50:35,418

There's some rumors about that.

:

00:50:35,698 --> 00:50:40,668

'cause Michael Mann wrote, he

co-wrote, a book Heat two, which

:

00:50:40,728 --> 00:50:43,668

simultaneously a sequel and a prequel

:

00:50:44,958 --> 00:50:46,088

Katie: It's fun when they do that.

:

00:50:46,983 --> 00:50:47,833

Hal: Dual storylines.

:

00:50:48,008 --> 00:50:49,778

Katie: Like Godfather two, sort of

:

00:50:50,208 --> 00:50:50,738

like that.

:

00:50:51,303 --> 00:50:51,723

Hal: Mm-Hmm.

:

00:50:52,543 --> 00:50:53,123

.You got it.

:

00:50:53,698 --> 00:50:53,978

Katie: Interesting.

:

00:50:55,048 --> 00:50:56,218

I'll be on the lookout for that.

:

00:50:57,458 --> 00:50:57,978

Val Kilmer.

:

00:50:58,198 --> 00:51:01,868

Um, he does get a lot of praise

for this, and I don't know.

:

00:51:02,068 --> 00:51:06,468

I knew that when I re-watched it and I was

particularly looking for it, and I don't,

:

00:51:07,588 --> 00:51:12,788

I guess I don't see him like standing out

far and away from any of the other actors.

:

00:51:13,408 --> 00:51:13,628

But

:

00:51:14,233 --> 00:51:15,618

Hal: I really, I mean, I don't know.

:

00:51:15,668 --> 00:51:16,578

I might, I might slightly

:

00:51:16,898 --> 00:51:17,098

disagree.

:

00:51:17,208 --> 00:51:20,248

I thought he just, his understated cool.

:

00:51:20,908 --> 00:51:25,168

His catchphrases and

playing the just, the dying

:

00:51:25,423 --> 00:51:25,843

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

:

00:51:26,418 --> 00:51:26,838

Hal: gunman.

:

00:51:28,338 --> 00:51:30,048

who's on his last legs?

:

00:51:30,398 --> 00:51:30,688

Yeah.

:

00:51:30,728 --> 00:51:32,398

I thought it was, pretty memorable.

:

00:51:32,478 --> 00:51:34,038

I would say he is the most memorable

:

00:51:35,228 --> 00:51:35,518

Katie: Well,

:

00:51:36,508 --> 00:51:38,748

I think most people probably

would agree with you.

:

00:51:38,848 --> 00:51:43,108

And he was nominated for, an

MTV movie award this year.

:

00:51:43,208 --> 00:51:44,148

He was the only person

:

00:51:44,148 --> 00:51:44,988

that got like a

:

00:51:45,088 --> 00:51:45,728

Hal: prestigious

:

00:51:45,858 --> 00:51:48,208

Katie: Yeah, the most,

I on his role though.

:

00:51:48,358 --> 00:51:49,648

What was his accent?

:

00:51:51,518 --> 00:51:52,458

Did you know, I don't, I

:

00:51:52,458 --> 00:51:53,178

was like, he's speaking

:

00:51:53,348 --> 00:51:54,148

Hal: tuberculosis.

:

00:51:54,198 --> 00:51:56,738

Katie: to , but do you know what I mean?

:

00:51:56,758 --> 00:51:58,058

He had a way of speaking

:

00:51:58,128 --> 00:51:59,658

Hal: I'll be a berry.

:

00:52:00,628 --> 00:52:03,708

Maybe as a southern gentleman perhaps.

:

00:52:04,078 --> 00:52:05,348

Katie: Maybe there was something

:

00:52:05,438 --> 00:52:06,148

extra to it.

:

00:52:06,418 --> 00:52:06,708

Yeah.

:

00:52:06,718 --> 00:52:08,158

Hal: think maybe, yeah.

:

00:52:08,158 --> 00:52:10,558

He put a little, he put a

little hot sauce on that accent.

:

00:52:10,608 --> 00:52:11,568

Katie: a little hot sauce.

:

00:52:11,618 --> 00:52:13,038

and then we have our Sam Elliot.

:

00:52:13,318 --> 00:52:14,238

I love Sam Elliot.

:

00:52:15,458 --> 00:52:15,678

He

:

00:52:15,678 --> 00:52:18,238

plays Virgil Doc's brother.

:

00:52:18,288 --> 00:52:18,788

did you know

:

00:52:18,993 --> 00:52:19,913

Hal: he was doc's brother.

:

00:52:20,608 --> 00:52:23,588

Katie: so he and Bill

Paxton, who plays Morgan?

:

00:52:24,178 --> 00:52:25,468

They're both brothers.

:

00:52:26,048 --> 00:52:26,868

Oh, I'm so sorry.

:

00:52:26,968 --> 00:52:27,188

Did

:

00:52:27,188 --> 00:52:27,308

I

:

00:52:27,408 --> 00:52:28,488

Hal: they were Wyatt's brother.

:

00:52:28,688 --> 00:52:29,308

Katie: You're right.

:

00:52:30,328 --> 00:52:30,788

My brain.

:

00:52:31,488 --> 00:52:32,308

The Wyatt's

:

00:52:32,308 --> 00:52:32,628

brothers.

:

00:52:32,968 --> 00:52:33,188

Yes.

:

00:52:33,608 --> 00:52:33,828

you.

:

00:52:34,238 --> 00:52:34,588

Sorry.

:

00:52:34,828 --> 00:52:35,588

I did say Doc.

:

00:52:35,988 --> 00:52:36,508

I meant

:

00:52:36,558 --> 00:52:37,598

Hal: way, can I ask you a question?

:

00:52:37,748 --> 00:52:40,438

I don't wanna spoil anything,

but, are we gonna talk at all

:

00:52:40,438 --> 00:52:41,958

about the Kevin Costner Wyatt.

:

00:52:42,188 --> 00:52:42,538

Katie: Wyatt.

:

00:52:42,638 --> 00:52:43,858

Yes, yes,

:

00:52:44,598 --> 00:52:44,818

yes.

:

00:52:45,678 --> 00:52:45,898

Hal: And

:

00:52:45,898 --> 00:52:46,618

then I will zip it.

:

00:52:46,808 --> 00:52:47,498

Katie: it's a question.

:

00:52:48,298 --> 00:52:51,758

I, one of the things I found interesting,

'cause I love the reading about who

:

00:52:52,218 --> 00:52:55,738

was maybe considered for alternate

castings, those kinds of things.

:

00:52:55,918 --> 00:52:56,138

Hal: yes.

:

00:52:56,848 --> 00:53:02,218

Katie: Well, so they, who someone didn't

want, Sam Elliott, because they thought

:

00:53:02,218 --> 00:53:04,578

that he was too old to play Virgil.

:

00:53:05,448 --> 00:53:07,138

He's only seven years older than Kurt.

:

00:53:07,538 --> 00:53:08,218

I would like to point out

:

00:53:08,248 --> 00:53:09,088

Hal: I looked that up

:

00:53:09,528 --> 00:53:09,648

actually.

:

00:53:09,698 --> 00:53:11,048

49 and 42.

:

00:53:11,288 --> 00:53:11,578

Katie: Yeah.

:

00:53:11,928 --> 00:53:12,218

Yeah.

:

00:53:13,468 --> 00:53:15,528

Hal: But Sam Elliot has always looked.

:

00:53:16,498 --> 00:53:17,408

50 plus

:

00:53:17,668 --> 00:53:17,888

Katie: Yep.

:

00:53:18,658 --> 00:53:19,268

Certainly.

:

00:53:19,318 --> 00:53:19,538

Yes.

:

00:53:19,948 --> 00:53:21,238

Hal: gray hair, gray mustache.

:

00:53:21,468 --> 00:53:22,478

Like he wears it well.

:

00:53:22,898 --> 00:53:27,008

But, he's, he's one of these actors

who I'm like, was he ever young?

:

00:53:27,088 --> 00:53:27,508

Katie: mm-Hmm.

:

00:53:28,578 --> 00:53:28,868

Hal: Yeah.

:

00:53:29,068 --> 00:53:31,268

Katie: know, those types of

actors when you do see them young?

:

00:53:31,328 --> 00:53:32,848

I'm like, I don't like the young version.

:

00:53:33,128 --> 00:53:33,408

I just

:

00:53:33,968 --> 00:53:34,488

want the old

:

00:53:34,578 --> 00:53:35,378

Hal: They grew into it.

:

00:53:35,438 --> 00:53:35,728

Katie: Yeah.

:

00:53:35,738 --> 00:53:36,218

Hal: into the looks.

:

00:53:36,268 --> 00:53:39,208

Katie: so Bill Paxton plays the other, why

:

00:53:39,368 --> 00:53:40,618

Hal: love love him.

:

00:53:40,798 --> 00:53:44,458

You know, with Bill Paxton, and I

know you're gonna mention some other

:

00:53:44,458 --> 00:53:51,238

actor, but they're, some nice, James

Cameron collaborators in this film

:

00:53:51,588 --> 00:53:51,878

Katie: Yeah.

:

00:53:51,878 --> 00:53:52,358

Good point.

:

00:53:53,658 --> 00:53:54,148

Hal: with him.

:

00:53:54,208 --> 00:53:56,648

And, uh, I don't wanna steal your

:

00:53:56,748 --> 00:53:57,328

No, go ahead.

:

00:53:57,508 --> 00:53:57,848

Go ahead.

:

00:53:57,958 --> 00:54:01,478

Bean, the bean, Michael Bean, he

saved Sarah Connor, and he fought

:

00:54:01,698 --> 00:54:04,918

aliens and, um, many other things.

:

00:54:06,627 --> 00:54:07,997

Katie: this was the fifth movie.

:

00:54:07,997 --> 00:54:09,397

Michael Bean and Bill Paxton.

:

00:54:09,397 --> 00:54:09,597

Yes.

:

00:54:10,087 --> 00:54:15,097

they appeared in the Lords of Discipline,

the Terminator Aliens and Navy Seals.

:

00:54:16,497 --> 00:54:20,497

to this, this was their fifth and

final appearance on screen together.

:

00:54:20,527 --> 00:54:20,817

Yeah.

:

00:54:20,817 --> 00:54:21,257

Good call.

:

00:54:21,662 --> 00:54:22,452

Hal: Right on.

:

00:54:22,502 --> 00:54:25,282

Katie: powers Booth,

who's like the bad guy.

:

00:54:25,472 --> 00:54:27,322

He's made a career playing bad guys.

:

00:54:27,322 --> 00:54:27,642

Right.

:

00:54:28,382 --> 00:54:28,602

He.

:

00:54:28,637 --> 00:54:29,127

Hal: He's great.

:

00:54:29,267 --> 00:54:35,887

And you know, there's, with

him and the woman who plays.

:

00:54:39,947 --> 00:54:42,967

, Sam Elliot's wife, they were

both on the show, Deadwood.

:

00:54:44,197 --> 00:54:45,667

Katie: Paula Malcolmson,

:

00:54:46,787 --> 00:54:47,007

Hal: Yes.

:

00:54:47,147 --> 00:54:48,287

And she was also in,

:

00:54:50,447 --> 00:54:51,107

Katie: Ray Donovan.

:

00:54:51,207 --> 00:54:51,867

Hal: Ray Donovan.

:

00:54:52,067 --> 00:54:53,147

Katie: that's who I knew her from.

:

00:54:53,167 --> 00:54:53,587

She, yeah.

:

00:54:53,587 --> 00:54:55,867

So Paula Malcolmson plays Ally rp.

:

00:54:55,877 --> 00:54:56,827

Who's Virgil's wife.

:

00:54:56,877 --> 00:55:01,937

she also is Kane's mom in

the Hunger Games movies.

:

00:55:02,317 --> 00:55:02,537

Hal: Oh,

:

00:55:02,667 --> 00:55:03,257

there you go.

:

00:55:03,257 --> 00:55:03,657

There you go.

:

00:55:03,707 --> 00:55:07,047

Katie: so Curly Bill, I

don't know if it's Brosius.

:

00:55:07,287 --> 00:55:07,647

B Braus.

:

00:55:07,927 --> 00:55:08,327

B Braus.

:

00:55:08,347 --> 00:55:09,847

Do you know how to

pronounce his last name?

:

00:55:11,337 --> 00:55:12,077

Hal: how do you spell it

:

00:55:13,007 --> 00:55:15,127

Katie: B-R-O-C-I-U-S

:

00:55:15,457 --> 00:55:17,047

Curly Bill b Braus Brock.

:

00:55:17,147 --> 00:55:18,847

Hal: bro, it sounds like precious to me.

:

00:55:20,707 --> 00:55:22,047

Katie: Is who Powers Booth plays.

:

00:55:22,747 --> 00:55:25,567

And you all know him for his,

he's in tons of bad guy things.

:

00:55:26,772 --> 00:55:26,992

Hal: Oh

:

00:55:27,077 --> 00:55:28,047

Katie: Michael Bean,

:

00:55:28,182 --> 00:55:30,272

Hal: very recognizable character actor.

:

00:55:30,272 --> 00:55:31,152

Michael Bean.

:

00:55:31,152 --> 00:55:31,952

Johnny Ringo.

:

00:55:32,087 --> 00:55:33,027

Katie: Johnny Ringo.

:

00:55:33,027 --> 00:55:34,027

This was, he was

:

00:55:34,027 --> 00:55:34,507

really good.

:

00:55:34,707 --> 00:55:36,867

I thought as Johnny Ringo a

:

00:55:37,107 --> 00:55:39,707

handsome, like he was handsome

in this too, I thought.

:

00:55:40,192 --> 00:55:41,012

Hal: Oh, absolutely.

:

00:55:41,012 --> 00:55:41,852

Well, a handsome guy.

:

00:55:41,952 --> 00:55:43,172

And, uh, Yeah.

:

00:55:43,262 --> 00:55:45,142

almost, too handsome to be a bad guy.

:

00:55:46,187 --> 00:55:46,477

Katie: Yeah.

:

00:55:47,287 --> 00:55:50,557

Jason Priestly's also supposed

to be one of the cowboys.

:

00:55:51,167 --> 00:55:52,717

Jason Priestly from 9 0 2 1.

:

00:55:52,717 --> 00:55:52,877

Oh.

:

00:55:54,397 --> 00:55:57,727

he's Billy Breckenridge is his name

in this, but he's one of the Cowboys

:

00:55:58,067 --> 00:55:59,167

as is Johnny Ringo.

:

00:55:59,177 --> 00:55:59,687

Curly Bill.

:

00:55:59,697 --> 00:56:01,287

Those are some of the cowboys.

:

00:56:02,071 --> 00:56:06,331

Steven Lang is another one of

the Cowboys playing Ike Clanton,

:

00:56:07,516 --> 00:56:07,936

Hal: Mm-Hmm.

:

00:56:08,511 --> 00:56:08,801

Katie: tons

:

00:56:08,821 --> 00:56:09,881

of TV credits

:

00:56:10,221 --> 00:56:11,346

and Broadway I.

:

00:56:12,361 --> 00:56:15,671

Hal: and, but I think, the, his

biggest claim to fame avatar.

:

00:56:16,311 --> 00:56:16,511

Katie: Yep.

:

00:56:16,531 --> 00:56:17,101

both of them.

:

00:56:17,221 --> 00:56:17,461

I think.

:

00:56:17,581 --> 00:56:19,301

I actually haven't seen

the second one, but

:

00:56:20,116 --> 00:56:23,146

Hal: I saw the second one

and, I watched it this way.

:

00:56:23,466 --> 00:56:25,976

I was a little, offput by how long it was,

:

00:56:26,081 --> 00:56:29,871

and, I fell asleep for the first,

like in, I fell asleep, you know,

:

00:56:30,411 --> 00:56:34,231

uh, half hour, 45 minutes in and woke

up with an hour left of the movie.

:

00:56:34,656 --> 00:56:35,316

Katie: oh my god.

:

00:56:35,346 --> 00:56:35,706

Hal: I kind of

:

00:56:35,756 --> 00:56:39,546

dozed in and out, but the

last hour action packed.

:

00:56:39,806 --> 00:56:43,746

So I would recommend be awake for

the first half hour, 45 minutes.

:

00:56:44,726 --> 00:56:45,476

Allow yourself

:

00:56:45,576 --> 00:56:50,196

to, uh, nod off if you need to

wake up for the last hour and

:

00:56:50,536 --> 00:56:51,916

the action is going strong.

:

00:56:52,901 --> 00:56:53,191

Katie: Okay.

:

00:56:53,341 --> 00:56:54,021

I don't know if that's

:

00:56:54,086 --> 00:56:54,866

Hal: No, regrets.

:

00:56:55,061 --> 00:56:58,601

Katie: not sure how big of a

cell that is, but, yeah, so he's.

:

00:57:00,601 --> 00:57:02,651

Also Thomas Hayden Church

:

00:57:03,891 --> 00:57:04,111

Hal: Yep.

:

00:57:04,241 --> 00:57:05,561

Katie: is, Billy Clanton.

:

00:57:05,651 --> 00:57:09,501

Hal: know from wings and,

the sitcom and, uh, sideways

:

00:57:10,081 --> 00:57:11,221

and Spider-Man.

:

00:57:11,631 --> 00:57:12,631

which Spider-Man, was it?

:

00:57:12,871 --> 00:57:13,411

Katie: Oh, I

:

00:57:13,491 --> 00:57:14,471

Hal: The amazing Spider-Man.

:

00:57:14,471 --> 00:57:14,671

Two.

:

00:57:14,851 --> 00:57:16,111

No, no Spider-Man.

:

00:57:16,171 --> 00:57:17,951

Two with, with Toby McGuire.

:

00:57:17,981 --> 00:57:19,751

Katie: he's in tons of

stuff though, but yeah.

:

00:57:20,741 --> 00:57:22,701

Ned and Stacey Lowell and Wings.

:

00:57:23,131 --> 00:57:23,421

Yeah.

:

00:57:23,731 --> 00:57:23,951

Hal: Yes.

:

00:57:24,651 --> 00:57:29,261

Katie: But I feel like, his

credit is pretty high up, but

:

00:57:29,261 --> 00:57:31,501

his role's pretty small in

:

00:57:31,501 --> 00:57:31,821

the movie.

:

00:57:32,181 --> 00:57:32,541

I thought.

:

00:57:32,591 --> 00:57:35,531

Hal: Listen, as my theater

teacher, I used to say there are

:

00:57:35,531 --> 00:57:37,251

no small parts, just small actors.

:

00:57:38,081 --> 00:57:39,841

Katie: I feel like that's

been in a lot of movies too.

:

00:57:40,041 --> 00:57:40,761

I feel like theater

:

00:57:41,081 --> 00:57:42,321

teachers must say that to everyone.

:

00:57:43,451 --> 00:57:43,871

Hal: indeed.

:

00:57:44,001 --> 00:57:45,541

To make you feel better

about your small part,

:

00:57:45,731 --> 00:57:46,981

Katie: Well, there's a lot of small parts.

:

00:57:47,141 --> 00:57:48,701

I mean, I think that's the

thing about this movie.

:

00:57:48,901 --> 00:57:52,281

I hadn't seen it in I, it may as well

have been my first viewing because

:

00:57:52,361 --> 00:57:54,961

I remembered so little from it, and

:

00:57:54,961 --> 00:57:57,801

there's just so many characters.

:

00:57:57,951 --> 00:58:02,961

It's kind of, I feel like if I watch

it over and over again, that issue for

:

00:58:02,961 --> 00:58:06,281

me would go away, but rewatching it,

I'm like, ah, there's so many people to

:

00:58:06,281 --> 00:58:07,921

keep track of who's who and blah blah

:

00:58:09,356 --> 00:58:13,456

Hal: You know, I was maybe most blown away

by the appearance of Billy Bob Thornton.

:

00:58:13,871 --> 00:58:15,771

Katie: as like kind of portly, right?

:

00:58:16,536 --> 00:58:16,756

Hal: Yes.

:

00:58:17,036 --> 00:58:18,316

a bit heavier than we know

:

00:58:18,316 --> 00:58:18,436

him.

:

00:58:18,676 --> 00:58:20,476

'cause now he's a little bit just gaunt.

:

00:58:20,736 --> 00:58:23,736

like I picture him in most

of his roles, but, yeah, that

:

00:58:23,736 --> 00:58:25,176

was very surprised by that.

:

00:58:25,196 --> 00:58:26,406

I'm like, is that Yeah,

:

00:58:26,751 --> 00:58:27,511

could hear it in his voice.

:

00:58:27,811 --> 00:58:28,031

Yep.

:

00:58:28,056 --> 00:58:28,346

Katie: yeah.

:

00:58:28,496 --> 00:58:28,786

Sure.

:

00:58:28,936 --> 00:58:30,026

Yeah, it is.

:

00:58:30,126 --> 00:58:36,116

He, yeah, he's, he plays Johnny

Tyler who like was the original,

:

00:58:36,146 --> 00:58:38,676

like he made the Oriental.

:

00:58:40,246 --> 00:58:45,746

Bar Tavern, he kind of kicked everybody

out and was doing the card game.

:

00:58:45,746 --> 00:58:50,296

Then Kurt's crew comes in and it was

kind of a strange sequence actually.

:

00:58:50,296 --> 00:58:52,976

He kind of just like slaps

him around and makes him

:

00:58:52,976 --> 00:58:53,296

leave.

:

00:58:53,716 --> 00:58:54,256

And that's

:

00:58:54,256 --> 00:58:55,956

that Billy

:

00:58:55,956 --> 00:58:56,876

Bob was just like, okay.

:

00:58:56,921 --> 00:58:57,121

Hal: it.

:

00:58:59,151 --> 00:59:00,491

He got, yeah.

:

00:59:00,491 --> 00:59:03,911

Billy Bob got punked by,

Kurt Russell in this movie.

:

00:59:04,136 --> 00:59:05,126

Katie: Yeah, slapped.

:

00:59:05,396 --> 00:59:05,686

Yeah.

:

00:59:05,716 --> 00:59:07,126

Like bitch

:

00:59:07,126 --> 00:59:07,526

slapped.

:

00:59:07,716 --> 00:59:08,006

Yeah.

:

00:59:08,706 --> 00:59:11,446

but so then Kurt's crew, they

take over the Oriental and

:

00:59:11,446 --> 00:59:14,806

get 25% of the Farro game.

:

00:59:16,046 --> 00:59:17,846

jumping around a little

bit with the people,

:

00:59:18,026 --> 00:59:22,076

but, did you know what Farrow was?

:

00:59:23,456 --> 00:59:24,836

Hal: No, I didn't even know

what they were playing.

:

00:59:24,916 --> 00:59:26,556

I thought they were playing

hold them or something.

:

00:59:27,421 --> 00:59:28,671

Katie: They're not playing poker.

:

00:59:29,411 --> 00:59:34,031

And that's why when the, when you

see scenes, it's, it looks like it's

:

00:59:34,031 --> 00:59:38,421

just like a dealer, but it's always

one of the ipss usually, Kurt Russell

:

00:59:39,051 --> 00:59:41,821

sitting like dealing the table,

but he's playing like the banker.

:

00:59:42,171 --> 00:59:43,621

It's a game like that.

:

00:59:43,921 --> 00:59:46,331

there's I don't know how to play

Farrow, but that's what they're playing.

:

00:59:46,331 --> 00:59:48,801

And there's like a

banker dealer type role.

:

00:59:50,001 --> 00:59:50,291

Yeah.

:

00:59:50,471 --> 00:59:51,971

And it all but went away.

:

00:59:52,006 --> 00:59:53,446

Hal: to, I'll have to look up the rules.

:

00:59:54,231 --> 00:59:54,521

Katie: Yeah.

:

00:59:54,701 --> 00:59:58,681

It, I got bored reading about it, so

I stopped . But they don't, it's not

:

00:59:58,681 --> 01:00:00,361

really a game that is played anymore.

:

01:00:00,361 --> 01:00:03,121

It's like an old timey French card game.

:

01:00:04,456 --> 01:00:04,676

Hal: Aha.

:

01:00:05,526 --> 01:00:05,876

Noted.

:

01:00:06,571 --> 01:00:10,711

Katie: But Holiday does play poker

in addition, but that's not the,

:

01:00:10,711 --> 01:00:12,151

everybody else they're playing Faroh.

:

01:00:12,201 --> 01:00:12,501

Hal: Got it.

:

01:00:12,716 --> 01:00:13,006

Katie: yeah.

:

01:00:13,006 --> 01:00:15,366

So Michael Bean, Charlton Hesston.

:

01:00:17,211 --> 01:00:18,871

Did you recognize Charlton Hesston?

:

01:00:19,451 --> 01:00:23,791

He, again, it's a pretty small role, but

he plays the ranch owner, Henry Hooker,

:

01:00:26,896 --> 01:00:28,386

Hal: Oh yeah.

:

01:00:28,941 --> 01:00:30,311

Katie: like later they take refuge

:

01:00:30,571 --> 01:00:31,551

at his ranch.

:

01:00:31,726 --> 01:00:31,946

?

Hal: Yes.

:

01:00:32,286 --> 01:00:32,506

Yes.

:

01:00:32,851 --> 01:00:35,591

Katie: And the county Sheriff Bean,

:

01:00:36,996 --> 01:00:37,416

Hal: Mm-Hmm?

:

01:00:37,611 --> 01:00:39,971

Katie: it Behan Bean Behan?

:

01:00:40,991 --> 01:00:41,211

I'm

:

01:00:41,211 --> 01:00:46,091

forgetting how they pronounce it, but

John Tenney plays him and he is familiar.

:

01:00:46,241 --> 01:00:47,411

He's in lots of stuff.

:

01:00:47,461 --> 01:00:50,911

he's probably most known for

this as well as his TV roles.

:

01:00:52,011 --> 01:00:55,751

, he plays Andrew Nichols in Scandal

and Fritz Howard in the Closer.

:

01:00:57,691 --> 01:00:57,911

And

:

01:00:58,316 --> 01:00:58,606

Hal: Okay.

:

01:00:58,901 --> 01:01:02,071

Katie: Dana Delaney is

our lovely Josephine.

:

01:01:02,361 --> 01:01:06,391

She's a theater actress and everyone knows

her China Beach Desperate Housewives.

:

01:01:07,001 --> 01:01:11,591

She's actually in the, if anybody

have you seen Tulsa King Paramount

:

01:01:11,646 --> 01:01:12,906

Hal: Um, oh yeah.

:

01:01:12,936 --> 01:01:13,806

With, Stallone.

:

01:01:14,421 --> 01:01:15,291

Katie: She's in that too.

:

01:01:15,341 --> 01:01:19,871

Lisa Collins plays Louisa erp

and she's, that's Morgan's wife.

:

01:01:20,411 --> 01:01:23,791

She was actually married in real

life to Billy Zane at the time.

:

01:01:25,206 --> 01:01:25,426

Hal: Oh.

:

01:01:25,686 --> 01:01:26,786

And, who also appeared

:

01:01:26,901 --> 01:01:27,251

Katie: Who's

:

01:01:27,426 --> 01:01:28,066

Hal: the actor.

:

01:01:28,751 --> 01:01:29,291

Katie: the actor?

:

01:01:29,501 --> 01:01:30,211

Billy Zane.

:

01:01:30,271 --> 01:01:33,731

And they say the Cowboys call him

like the prettiest man I've ever seen.

:

01:01:34,426 --> 01:01:34,646

Hal: Yes.

:

01:01:34,901 --> 01:01:35,871

Katie: Something like that.

:

01:01:36,651 --> 01:01:40,101

And Jason Priestly's character

is has a crush on him?

:

01:01:40,161 --> 01:01:41,581

Or what are we supposed

to think about that?

:

01:01:41,721 --> 01:01:48,941

And like the, it was just kind of

interesting that they, even some of the

:

01:01:48,971 --> 01:01:55,721

cowboys like made some . Like sexual

jokes a about him when he is like playing

:

01:01:55,721 --> 01:01:59,321

the, like he's putting on whatever the

show is and they're being ridiculous.

:

01:01:59,501 --> 01:02:04,131

And, um, yeah, so Jason Priestly's

super into him and then the

:

01:02:04,131 --> 01:02:05,251

other two guys are kind of

:

01:02:05,411 --> 01:02:06,181

Hal: That would've been a

:

01:02:06,181 --> 01:02:09,211

fun subplot if those two

were allowed to, real.

:

01:02:09,321 --> 01:02:11,251

Just be free and be themselves.

:

01:02:11,741 --> 01:02:12,121

Katie: but he

:

01:02:12,121 --> 01:02:15,321

wasn't hiding it, which

was interesting in, at,

:

01:02:15,341 --> 01:02:16,241

in the old West.

:

01:02:16,541 --> 01:02:19,591

And, yeah, they were, even the cowboys

were talking about, oh, I've already

:

01:02:19,591 --> 01:02:21,031

done that, been there, done that.

:

01:02:21,591 --> 01:02:23,421

I don't know, I don't know.

:

01:02:23,541 --> 01:02:27,321

I thought it was interesting

that they shined a light on

:

01:02:27,321 --> 01:02:27,441

that.

:

01:02:27,601 --> 01:02:27,881

Hal: yeah.

:

01:02:27,881 --> 01:02:28,161

Kind of

:

01:02:28,161 --> 01:02:28,681

alluded to that.

:

01:02:28,681 --> 01:02:28,921

Yeah.

:

01:02:30,851 --> 01:02:36,871

Katie: uh, Kate is played by

Joanna Ula, and Kate is, uh,

:

01:02:37,081 --> 01:02:39,401

doc's lady in the movie.

:

01:02:39,416 --> 01:02:39,706

Hal: Okay.

:

01:02:39,726 --> 01:02:40,226

Oh, yes.

:

01:02:40,416 --> 01:02:43,906

Katie: Michael Rucker plays Sherman

MAs McMaster, and he's in like

:

01:02:43,906 --> 01:02:45,466

a ton and ton a ton of stuff.

:

01:02:45,616 --> 01:02:48,596

He's also, he plays Hal

and Cliffhanger Stallone.

:

01:02:48,756 --> 01:02:51,036

I could make anything a

Stallone reference, but

:

01:02:51,276 --> 01:02:51,496

Hal: Yes.

:

01:02:52,156 --> 01:02:54,136

and I love Michael Rucker, walking

:

01:02:54,486 --> 01:02:54,906

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

:

01:02:54,956 --> 01:02:56,536

Hal: and, the Guardians films.

:

01:02:56,846 --> 01:02:57,616

Yeah, he's great.

:

01:02:57,986 --> 01:02:58,276

Katie: Yeah.

:

01:02:58,276 --> 01:03:01,276

Gardens of the Galaxy movies

also Is Curtis, or No,

:

01:03:02,556 --> 01:03:02,846

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:03:02,846 --> 01:03:04,216

Kurt Russell is in the second one.

:

01:03:04,476 --> 01:03:04,766

Katie: okay.

:

01:03:04,816 --> 01:03:06,356

so yeah, we talked about Billy Zane.

:

01:03:06,356 --> 01:03:07,516

Billy Bob Thornton.

:

01:03:07,566 --> 01:03:11,856

there's a lot of Billies, both

the names of the actors and

:

01:03:11,856 --> 01:03:13,016

the names of the characters.

:

01:03:13,016 --> 01:03:13,336

Almost

:

01:03:13,576 --> 01:03:14,496

everyone is named Billy.

:

01:03:16,726 --> 01:03:16,946

Hal: man.

:

01:03:17,046 --> 01:03:18,066

Too many Billys in

:

01:03:18,116 --> 01:03:19,646

Katie: There's, there are like it.

:

01:03:19,986 --> 01:03:20,566

I'm getting

:

01:03:20,796 --> 01:03:21,916

Hal: they get Billy Baldwin?

:

01:03:22,416 --> 01:03:22,636

Uh

:

01:03:23,136 --> 01:03:23,256

Katie: actually.

:

01:03:23,316 --> 01:03:26,266

He was considered or wanted,

he, we'll get to the casting.

:

01:03:26,266 --> 01:03:26,946

What Ups, but yeah.

:

01:03:27,446 --> 01:03:27,986

Hal: oh, gotcha.

:

01:03:28,886 --> 01:03:32,066

Katie: So then, we have a lot of

other small parts by famous people.

:

01:03:33,046 --> 01:03:36,836

Did you ever see, did

you watch Yellowstone?

:

01:03:37,046 --> 01:03:39,466

Hal: you know what, I'm the one

person who's not seen Yellowstone

:

01:03:39,466 --> 01:03:40,816

yet, but I'm fully aware,

:

01:03:40,976 --> 01:03:41,616

Katie: I same.

:

01:03:41,936 --> 01:03:45,096

I mean I just recently watched it

because I kept hearing so much about it.

:

01:03:45,166 --> 01:03:45,456

Well,

:

01:03:46,166 --> 01:03:46,516

Hal: right.

:

01:03:47,036 --> 01:03:47,616

Katie: for j

:

01:03:47,616 --> 01:03:51,026

Smith plays a small role in this and,

you will all recognize him because

:

01:03:51,326 --> 01:03:56,076

he is, Lloyd in Yellowstone and he's

like a real cowboy in real life.

:

01:03:56,196 --> 01:04:01,106

I think we also have John Philbin,

Robert Burke, and then Wyatt

:

01:04:01,176 --> 01:04:03,986

Earp like the fifth cousin.

:

01:04:04,896 --> 01:04:05,186

It's

:

01:04:05,236 --> 01:04:05,656

Hal: Gotcha.

:

01:04:05,711 --> 01:04:07,721

Yeah, I noticed that in the credits, the

:

01:04:07,721 --> 01:04:08,441

IMDB there.

:

01:04:08,441 --> 01:04:08,681

Yeah.

:

01:04:08,681 --> 01:04:12,441

There was an actual guy

named Wyatt ERP in the movie

:

01:04:13,126 --> 01:04:16,856

Katie: he's actually the fifth cousin

of the Real Wide Earp, and he plays

:

01:04:16,926 --> 01:04:19,616

another Billy Billy Clayborn in this.

:

01:04:20,871 --> 01:04:21,681

John Corbett.

:

01:04:21,681 --> 01:04:22,641

Terry O'Quinn

:

01:04:23,131 --> 01:04:23,961

plays the mayor.

:

01:04:24,481 --> 01:04:24,971

Hal: Corbett.

:

01:04:25,041 --> 01:04:25,331

Yeah.

:

01:04:25,961 --> 01:04:26,251

Okay.

:

01:04:26,851 --> 01:04:28,991

Katie: Robert Mitchum is the narrator.

:

01:04:29,881 --> 01:04:30,451

Hal: Love Robert

:

01:04:30,451 --> 01:04:32,411

Mitcham, one of the great classic actors.

:

01:04:32,741 --> 01:04:36,181

highly recommend Knight of the

Hunter, which is a haunting film.

:

01:04:36,451 --> 01:04:37,511

Katie: Ooh, okay.

:

01:04:38,851 --> 01:04:41,431

He was originally supposed to

have a different role in this,

:

01:04:41,491 --> 01:04:44,831

but he like fell off of a horse

and injured himself, so that's why

:

01:04:45,341 --> 01:04:46,271

he's the narrator.

:

01:04:47,126 --> 01:04:47,416

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:04:47,476 --> 01:04:49,496

he was, you know, an

older gentleman at that

:

01:04:49,611 --> 01:04:49,901

Katie: Yeah.

:

01:04:50,291 --> 01:04:50,581

Yeah.

:

01:04:50,781 --> 01:04:55,881

and then, I don't know if you caught

, Sylvester, Stallone's brother Frank in

:

01:04:55,946 --> 01:04:56,486

Hal: Oh yeah.

:

01:04:56,906 --> 01:04:57,326

Mm-Hmm?

:

01:04:57,521 --> 01:05:02,251

Katie: in an early scene listeners,

where he is like playing cards with Doc

:

01:05:02,251 --> 01:05:03,971

and he loses, they, they get in a fight.

:

01:05:04,976 --> 01:05:05,396

Hal: Mm-Hmm.

:

01:05:05,476 --> 01:05:05,876

. Mm-Hmm.

:

01:05:05,881 --> 01:05:09,861

Katie: um, how you may not know this,

but listeners might if you listen

:

01:05:09,861 --> 01:05:15,631

to this show and, Ryan, my co-host

on the Rocky Show, one More Round.

:

01:05:15,771 --> 01:05:16,591

He has a

:

01:05:16,591 --> 01:05:22,191

show about Rambo also, and on that

show, there's a segment that has kind of

:

01:05:22,191 --> 01:05:28,791

become notorious now about Frank Stallone

because I dunno if you know anything

:

01:05:28,791 --> 01:05:33,591

about him in his personal life, but he's,

he's got a lot of wild takes on things.

:

01:05:33,821 --> 01:05:36,591

Like he's, um, yeah,

:

01:05:36,596 --> 01:05:37,786

Hal: Conspiracy theorist.

:

01:05:38,061 --> 01:05:38,351

Katie: Like,

:

01:05:39,626 --> 01:05:40,476

Hal: Full Q anon.

:

01:05:40,481 --> 01:05:44,271

Katie: well, may, I don't, I

mean, yeah, I don't, he's, just

:

01:05:44,271 --> 01:05:45,911

different , let's just put it.

:

01:05:46,061 --> 01:05:46,351

Yeah.

:

01:05:46,511 --> 01:05:47,081

he's wild.

:

01:05:47,381 --> 01:05:52,641

And, so they cover him in a segment

on the Rambo Show about his postings.

:

01:05:53,461 --> 01:05:55,361

And he, I.

:

01:05:55,916 --> 01:05:59,406

Will bring up the fact that he

was in Tombstone all the time.

:

01:05:59,546 --> 01:06:01,306

that's his big claim to fame.

:

01:06:01,746 --> 01:06:02,506

I guess if I had

:

01:06:02,556 --> 01:06:03,526

Hal: It's finest hour.

:

01:06:04,031 --> 01:06:06,811

Katie: you know, if my brother was like

one of the most famous people on the

:

01:06:06,811 --> 01:06:09,411

planet and I had been in one movie,

I'd probably be talking about it too.

:

01:06:10,371 --> 01:06:10,661

Yeah.

:

01:06:10,686 --> 01:06:10,976

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:06:12,601 --> 01:06:13,861

Katie: So there's tons of characters.

:

01:06:13,961 --> 01:06:15,941

I'd probably missed some 'cause

I was trying to go through

:

01:06:15,941 --> 01:06:17,061

them without boring you all.

:

01:06:17,081 --> 01:06:20,721

But yes, there's tons and tons of

favorite people or famous people

:

01:06:21,301 --> 01:06:22,971

in this, which makes it fun.

:

01:06:23,211 --> 01:06:24,731

I think I very much think that.

:

01:06:25,631 --> 01:06:25,851

How

:

01:06:26,966 --> 01:06:27,316

Hal: today.

:

01:06:27,316 --> 01:06:32,046

in retrospect, it was, seeing like

all these people who weren't at

:

01:06:32,046 --> 01:06:33,766

the peak of their fame popping up.

:

01:06:34,541 --> 01:06:35,631

Back then was real cool,

:

01:06:36,241 --> 01:06:39,901

Katie: do you have, what are your

overall impressions or favorite scenes.

:

01:06:41,241 --> 01:06:43,101

Hal: you know, overall impressions.

:

01:06:44,051 --> 01:06:46,271

so I like the movie a lot.

:

01:06:46,751 --> 01:06:51,511

I do feel like, and I guess they were

trying to be true to history or what

:

01:06:51,511 --> 01:06:59,661

have you, but I felt like it reached a

climax when the, our four main heroes.

:

01:06:59,711 --> 01:07:04,501

Kurt Russell, Sam Elliot, Val Kilmer

and Bill Paxton were walking down

:

01:07:04,501 --> 01:07:06,261

the street in that iconic shot,

:

01:07:06,261 --> 01:07:07,861

going to the OK Corral.

:

01:07:09,331 --> 01:07:14,591

and like that was that, that, like that to

me, that was the climax of the movie, but

:

01:07:14,591 --> 01:07:17,431

there was still like 45 minutes a movie

:

01:07:17,521 --> 01:07:17,811

Katie: Yeah.

:

01:07:17,891 --> 01:07:18,871

Hal: so after that.

:

01:07:19,331 --> 01:07:24,151

And I felt like the the end

was a little anticlimactic.

:

01:07:24,291 --> 01:07:28,771

It kind of just like it, you know,

you had, you were just like tying up

:

01:07:28,771 --> 01:07:33,011

loose ends and you'd had a, like a

guy gets iil killed here, a guy gets

:

01:07:33,071 --> 01:07:37,731

his, you know, come up and there, I

wish it, it could have gone down in

:

01:07:37,731 --> 01:07:39,291

just a, make it a little shorter.

:

01:07:39,741 --> 01:07:41,931

Fudge it, put in, put

everybody at the Okay.

:

01:07:42,191 --> 01:07:42,611

Corral

:

01:07:43,006 --> 01:07:44,096

Katie: Well, they fudged a lot.

:

01:07:44,156 --> 01:07:47,836

this was not historically accurate

by any stretch of the imagination,

:

01:07:48,296 --> 01:07:48,716

but I

:

01:07:48,806 --> 01:07:54,576

Hal: So, yeah, I, yeah, I felt like it,

it didn't carry its, it didn't, keep

:

01:07:54,576 --> 01:07:56,626

it, its momentum going till the end.

:

01:07:56,786 --> 01:07:59,906

I felt like it petered out a little

bit as far as, you know, best scenes.

:

01:07:59,906 --> 01:08:00,146

Yeah.

:

01:08:00,146 --> 01:08:01,126

the walking to the Okay.

:

01:08:01,186 --> 01:08:02,246

Corral is amazing.

:

01:08:02,866 --> 01:08:06,546

you know, I'm in the Val

Kilmer doc holiday camp here.

:

01:08:06,666 --> 01:08:09,946

I thought he's just like a special

brand of cool, even though he is

:

01:08:09,956 --> 01:08:12,976

dying of, uh, horrific, tuberculosis.

:

01:08:14,826 --> 01:08:16,446

, yeah, like that's the main stuff.

:

01:08:16,506 --> 01:08:22,066

But, and then just seeing all these

guys pop up, you, you pointed out like,

:

01:08:22,156 --> 01:08:27,475

Michael Bean as Johnny Ringo, I loved his

moments and that dynamic with Val Kilmer

:

01:08:27,586 --> 01:08:27,826

Katie: yeah.

:

01:08:27,956 --> 01:08:31,435

Hal: they, when every time they

would start jawing at each other

:

01:08:31,496 --> 01:08:33,836

and face off, like that was great.

:

01:08:34,536 --> 01:08:36,716

Um, yeah, but.

:

01:08:37,696 --> 01:08:41,185

Then there were some things that

like, I was like, huh you know, the

:

01:08:41,185 --> 01:08:45,706

fact that, Kurt Russell had this,

half-baked glove story with Dana Delaney.

:

01:08:45,706 --> 01:08:49,281

Meanwhile, his, his wife is,

an opium addict I don't know.

:

01:08:49,361 --> 01:08:50,560

I wanted to know more about that.

:

01:08:50,640 --> 01:08:52,321

I felt like that was a little undercooked.

:

01:08:52,520 --> 01:08:52,801

I felt

:

01:08:52,801 --> 01:08:54,241

like that was a little undercooked.

:

01:08:54,626 --> 01:08:54,975

Katie: agree.

:

01:08:56,206 --> 01:09:00,376

Yeah, it, well, my brain is

swirling with follow-up questions.

:

01:09:00,496 --> 01:09:05,066

I don't know where to start first,

but, so the movie was over two

:

01:09:05,116 --> 01:09:14,185

hours, but the other movie named

Wyatt Earp that came out around the

:

01:09:14,185 --> 01:09:17,145

same time as this, and it's with

:

01:09:17,145 --> 01:09:17,906

Kevin Costner.

:

01:09:18,151 --> 01:09:19,171

Hal: do this all the

:

01:09:19,220 --> 01:09:19,560

Katie: It does.

:

01:09:19,861 --> 01:09:20,201

It does.

:

01:09:20,270 --> 01:09:25,081

It's, so that version is with Kevin

Costner, Dennis Quate and Gene Hackman.

:

01:09:26,001 --> 01:09:28,781

Hal: Oh, see, Dennis Quaid was

in that I made the Dennis Quaid,

:

01:09:28,970 --> 01:09:29,191

Katie: Yes,

:

01:09:29,640 --> 01:09:29,861

Hal: but

:

01:09:30,371 --> 01:09:30,591

Katie: yes.

:

01:09:30,651 --> 01:09:31,071

Dennis.

:

01:09:31,551 --> 01:09:32,961

Hal: Gene Hackman great,

:

01:09:33,060 --> 01:09:36,600

by the way, in one of my all time

favorite westerns, unforgiven.

:

01:09:36,611 --> 01:09:37,850

Katie: that's right, that's right.

:

01:09:38,501 --> 01:09:38,791

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:09:39,171 --> 01:09:39,631

So good.

:

01:09:40,151 --> 01:09:40,600

Katie: Well, so

:

01:09:40,890 --> 01:09:42,171

Hal: that a couple years ago again.

:

01:09:44,121 --> 01:09:47,011

Katie: that Wyatt Earp, which was

like three and a half hours long,

:

01:09:47,011 --> 01:09:48,051

this is kind of where I was going.

:

01:09:48,181 --> 01:09:49,041

Hal: Oh gosh.

:

01:09:49,310 --> 01:09:53,011

Katie: now I'm not opposed to a

long movie if the story warrants

:

01:09:53,011 --> 01:09:54,331

it, and apparently it didn't.

:

01:09:55,251 --> 01:09:56,651

I have not seen Wyatt Earp.

:

01:09:56,761 --> 01:10:02,321

Have you, let me get your, impressions

about Tombstone versus Earp.

:

01:10:03,841 --> 01:10:07,821

Hal: You know, I need, I would need to

rewatch it again, first off, I'm damn glad

:

01:10:08,761 --> 01:10:12,371

that tombstone wasn't over three hours.

:

01:10:13,431 --> 01:10:16,571

It felt a little long in the

tooth at two plus, especially

:

01:10:16,731 --> 01:10:17,771

'cause it lost the momentum.

:

01:10:18,471 --> 01:10:20,611

and tombstone, I think wi wins.

:

01:10:20,871 --> 01:10:21,971

It was first to the party

:

01:10:22,346 --> 01:10:22,766

Katie: it was.

:

01:10:23,131 --> 01:10:25,151

Hal: and more memorable performances.

:

01:10:25,666 --> 01:10:25,886

Katie: Yep.

:

01:10:26,451 --> 01:10:30,351

Hal: And yeah, Holly Hollywood needs to

stop cannibalizing itself and shooting and

:

01:10:30,351 --> 01:10:34,931

being incestuous, shooting itself in the

foot and releasing, Armageddon and Deep

:

01:10:34,951 --> 01:10:36,851

Impact Tombstone and Wyatt Earp.

:

01:10:36,851 --> 01:10:37,891

There, there are other ones.

:

01:10:37,891 --> 01:10:38,091

There

:

01:10:38,091 --> 01:10:38,371

are other

:

01:10:38,606 --> 01:10:39,446

Katie: tons of 'em.

:

01:10:39,551 --> 01:10:39,841

Hal: yeah.

:

01:10:40,111 --> 01:10:40,401

Yeah.

:

01:10:41,911 --> 01:10:46,271

so yeah, I'm giving the wind a tombstone

just because I, may, maybe it's a

:

01:10:46,271 --> 01:10:48,481

recency biased, because I just watched

:

01:10:48,516 --> 01:10:49,526

Katie: Well, you wouldn't be alone.

:

01:10:50,126 --> 01:10:53,366

I didn't, I, I don't recall

the IMDB rating, but tombstones

:

01:10:53,366 --> 01:10:54,566

IMDB rating is pretty high.

:

01:10:54,666 --> 01:11:00,806

And just my quick little, the consensus

seems to be that tombstone is the better

:

01:11:00,806 --> 01:11:03,006

movie for the reasons that you mentioned.

:

01:11:03,491 --> 01:11:03,841

Hal: sorry,

:

01:11:03,951 --> 01:11:04,441

Costner.

:

01:11:06,201 --> 01:11:06,491

Yeah.

:

01:11:06,491 --> 01:11:07,171

The love story.

:

01:11:07,446 --> 01:11:09,096

Katie: yeah, so that, yeah.

:

01:11:09,196 --> 01:11:13,736

So his wife, yes, she's

addicted to lot lump.

:

01:11:13,896 --> 01:11:16,296

I lotum, I'm saying it

wrong, probably, which

:

01:11:16,296 --> 01:11:16,936

is opium.

:

01:11:17,156 --> 01:11:19,896

And apparently, in real

life she was as well.

:

01:11:21,116 --> 01:11:26,496

and apparently like back in the day, it

wasn't super uncommon and a lot of women

:

01:11:27,046 --> 01:11:29,736

were addicted to it, but we find it out.

:

01:11:29,816 --> 01:11:33,216

I kind of love that, like we're introduced

to her and immediately she gets off the

:

01:11:33,216 --> 01:11:36,296

train and she's like, I can't find any

lot and I'm, none of the stores sell it.

:

01:11:36,876 --> 01:11:39,896

And then one of the other wives are

like, oh, I've got some in my bag.

:

01:11:39,896 --> 01:11:40,456

Here you go.

:

01:11:40,566 --> 01:11:41,976

Like it, like that's her

:

01:11:41,976 --> 01:11:42,656

first priority.

:

01:11:42,656 --> 01:11:43,576

She gets off the train.

:

01:11:44,726 --> 01:11:47,456

Also, that scene when

we meet Kurt Russell,

:

01:11:48,886 --> 01:11:49,106

Hal: Yes.

:

01:11:50,326 --> 01:11:51,176

Katie: he's so handsome.

:

01:11:52,606 --> 01:11:53,986

Hal: Oh, absolutely.

:

01:11:54,246 --> 01:11:54,886

Katie: so handsome.

:

01:11:54,946 --> 01:11:58,586

Hal: That mustache that, that

little squint he's got from

:

01:11:58,586 --> 01:12:00,186

the sun beaten down on him.

:

01:12:00,976 --> 01:12:01,196

Oh,

:

01:12:01,371 --> 01:12:03,741

Katie: Well, and that's why

Dana Delaney says she wants one.

:

01:12:04,041 --> 01:12:04,741

That's what she

:

01:12:04,741 --> 01:12:05,381

says about him.

:

01:12:05,811 --> 01:12:06,101

Yeah.

:

01:12:06,526 --> 01:12:09,666

Hal: she wants one of those,

one of those old west Lawman

:

01:12:09,851 --> 01:12:12,241

Katie: Happy Hunting says Billy

:

01:12:12,391 --> 01:12:12,681

Zane.

:

01:12:13,191 --> 01:12:13,481

Yeah,

:

01:12:13,606 --> 01:12:13,826

Hal: Yes.

:

01:12:14,086 --> 01:12:14,306

Yes.

:

01:12:14,861 --> 01:12:15,481

Go get 'em.

:

01:12:15,481 --> 01:12:15,881

Girlfriend.

:

01:12:17,016 --> 01:12:18,716

Katie: but then in addition to him being

:

01:12:19,236 --> 01:12:20,076

handsome, we're

:

01:12:20,211 --> 01:12:21,691

Hal: of theater kids,

couple of theater kids.

:

01:12:21,691 --> 01:12:22,771

Dana Delaney and Billy

:

01:12:23,036 --> 01:12:23,356

Katie: I know.

:

01:12:23,396 --> 01:12:23,836

I love it.

:

01:12:24,346 --> 01:12:28,636

Well, 'cause at first you don't know,

they step outta the carriage together and

:

01:12:28,636 --> 01:12:30,796

it's like, oh, maybe they're a couple.

:

01:12:31,136 --> 01:12:34,116

But no, we immediately find out

that they're not by their little

:

01:12:34,476 --> 01:12:34,596

exchange.

:

01:12:36,051 --> 01:12:36,271

Hal: Yes.

:

01:12:37,536 --> 01:12:41,976

Katie: I personally, and I imagine a lot

of people were also, I think this was good

:

01:12:41,976 --> 01:12:49,181

movie making, were immediately endeared

to w Earp because that scene . He stops

:

01:12:49,491 --> 01:12:52,301

some piece of shit from beating his horse

:

01:12:53,791 --> 01:12:54,291

Hal: Oh Yeah.

:

01:12:54,941 --> 01:12:55,651

Slaps that guy

:

01:12:55,671 --> 01:12:57,961

in, in the face with, uh,

with whatever that rope

:

01:12:58,021 --> 01:12:59,681

or whatever he was hitting the horse with.

:

01:12:59,681 --> 01:13:00,081

And he is like.

:

01:13:00,571 --> 01:13:01,376

Hurts, don't it?

:

01:13:02,251 --> 01:13:02,541

Katie: Yeah.

:

01:13:02,541 --> 01:13:04,141

And then I think he just

like, takes the horse.

:

01:13:04,531 --> 01:13:04,821

It's

:

01:13:04,871 --> 01:13:05,161

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:13:05,221 --> 01:13:07,551

And then he's I'm sorry

he did that to you, horse.

:

01:13:07,771 --> 01:13:09,591

And then he kisses his horse on the lips.

:

01:13:09,746 --> 01:13:10,886

Katie: that's so what I would've done.

:

01:13:11,346 --> 01:13:13,726

But yeah, also the scene.

:

01:13:13,826 --> 01:13:14,486

So yeah.

:

01:13:14,486 --> 01:13:17,286

So the love story, I didn't

know what to make of it either

:

01:13:17,286 --> 01:13:19,806

because it was half-baked.

:

01:13:19,966 --> 01:13:22,576

I think your point is well taken.

:

01:13:24,066 --> 01:13:26,176

The, the scene where his wife is?

:

01:13:26,246 --> 01:13:26,536

Yeah.

:

01:13:26,576 --> 01:13:29,786

I mean, she's addicted to opium

and so she's not really with it,

:

01:13:29,846 --> 01:13:33,706

but the scene, I just wanted to

shake her when he says to her.

:

01:13:34,801 --> 01:13:39,421

Something about we've got enough

money, why don't we just, travel

:

01:13:39,481 --> 01:13:41,981

the world and live on room service

:

01:13:42,481 --> 01:13:43,581

for the rest of our lives?

:

01:13:44,521 --> 01:13:49,581

And she like laughs at him and I'm like,

I'll please, I'll come, I'll be your wife.

:

01:13:49,581 --> 01:13:50,701

I'll do that Kurt Russell.

:

01:13:52,971 --> 01:13:53,261

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:13:53,441 --> 01:13:58,511

taking that out of, Dana Delaney's,

yeah, Dana Delaney was talking about

:

01:13:58,511 --> 01:14:00,371

that, and he's so enchanted with her.

:

01:14:01,521 --> 01:14:03,881

He's can I turn my wife

into this type of woman?

:

01:14:04,511 --> 01:14:04,801

Nope.

:

01:14:04,971 --> 01:14:07,111

She's drugged out and, out of it.

:

01:14:09,451 --> 01:14:11,031

Katie: But then at the end.

:

01:14:12,631 --> 01:14:14,331

He gets to do that.

:

01:14:14,431 --> 01:14:16,451

So that was our little

tying up to your point.

:

01:14:17,111 --> 01:14:23,171

the callback, he ends up with

Josie at the end and they end up

:

01:14:23,171 --> 01:14:24,611

dancing and kissing in the snow.

:

01:14:24,631 --> 01:14:28,051

He gets his girl and oh, it turns

out she's riches and thought.

:

01:14:28,051 --> 01:14:28,371

Lovely.

:

01:14:29,471 --> 01:14:29,691

And

:

01:14:30,781 --> 01:14:31,131

after

:

01:14:31,251 --> 01:14:34,091

they dance, yeah, after they

dance, he says, oh, we're gonna

:

01:14:34,091 --> 01:14:35,411

go get room service after this.

:

01:14:35,431 --> 01:14:36,971

So it was like that perfectly.

:

01:14:37,021 --> 01:14:37,671

yeah, it was

:

01:14:37,736 --> 01:14:38,546

Hal: They did tie it up.

:

01:14:38,546 --> 01:14:39,346

They did tie it up.

:

01:14:39,406 --> 01:14:44,266

but yeah, just while we were

watching it, I'm like, oh, this,

:

01:14:44,366 --> 01:14:49,076

you know, his, I just felt bad for

his wife and, and she needed a rehab

:

01:14:51,526 --> 01:14:51,876

sadly.

:

01:14:52,211 --> 01:14:55,621

Katie: so I mean, with

that though, she leaves.

:

01:14:56,281 --> 01:15:01,231

So spoiler alert, Morgan,

the brother dies in the

:

01:15:01,231 --> 01:15:01,711

shootout.

:

01:15:02,776 --> 01:15:02,996

.

Hal: Yep.

:

01:15:03,611 --> 01:15:04,071

Katie: Sam Elliot.

:

01:15:04,476 --> 01:15:05,506

Hal: Takes one in the back.

:

01:15:06,871 --> 01:15:10,931

Katie: Sam Elliott gets shot and

loses, the use of his left arm.

:

01:15:11,006 --> 01:15:11,226

Hal: arm.

:

01:15:11,911 --> 01:15:16,971

Katie: So he escorts all of the ladies

back wherever they're, I don't know

:

01:15:16,971 --> 01:15:17,931

where they're going, but they leave.

:

01:15:17,931 --> 01:15:21,711

And then Kurt Russell's free to now

like the wive's pissed because she

:

01:15:22,151 --> 01:15:27,151

knows there are like two instances

where both women kind of come for

:

01:15:27,221 --> 01:15:31,071

Kurt to comfort him and they see,

like the wife sees this happening.

:

01:15:31,611 --> 01:15:31,831

So

:

01:15:31,866 --> 01:15:33,276

Hal: they make steely eye contact.

:

01:15:33,421 --> 01:15:34,641

Katie: little love triangle.

:

01:15:34,676 --> 01:15:34,996

Hal: watching you.

:

01:15:35,781 --> 01:15:38,201

Katie: So she are we, what are

we led to believe do you think?

:

01:15:39,321 --> 01:15:40,611

Because they're still married.

:

01:15:42,686 --> 01:15:42,976

Hal: yeah.

:

01:15:44,746 --> 01:15:48,876

I led to believe that, listen,

she was, she was an opium head.

:

01:15:48,876 --> 01:15:51,716

We, we saw what it did to

power's, boots, character.

:

01:15:51,816 --> 01:15:54,756

He ran out in the middle of the

street and started firing guns off,

:

01:15:54,756 --> 01:15:57,956

and she was just like laughing,

couldn't control her emotions.

:

01:15:58,016 --> 01:16:00,806

So, listen, it was a dying marriage.

:

01:16:01,106 --> 01:16:01,806

It was sad.

:

01:16:02,786 --> 01:16:06,766

but, yeah, it was just weird how it's

yeah, he is married to this drug addict.

:

01:16:06,766 --> 01:16:11,921

And like her character was like, You

know, just a little under underwritten.

:

01:16:11,996 --> 01:16:12,416

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

:

01:16:12,846 --> 01:16:13,496

very, yes.

:

01:16:14,276 --> 01:16:17,456

And Josie knows he's not happy

and she doesn't care if he's

:

01:16:17,646 --> 01:16:17,936

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:16:18,676 --> 01:16:18,896

Katie: Um,

:

01:16:19,316 --> 01:16:21,816

but in real life, I was reading that.

:

01:16:22,116 --> 01:16:26,296

so obviously this movie takes

liberties in a lot of ways, but

:

01:16:26,576 --> 01:16:32,206

apparently, um, Wyatt and Maddie,

I think they stayed married and

:

01:16:32,206 --> 01:16:33,726

they're buried next to each other.

:

01:16:35,356 --> 01:16:37,956

I don't know if this was, if this Josie

:

01:16:38,346 --> 01:16:42,756

interlude was just a little fling

and he goes back, or it's a movie.

:

01:16:43,016 --> 01:16:43,236

Yes.

:

01:16:43,256 --> 01:16:43,476

But

:

01:16:43,686 --> 01:16:46,426

Hal: Or yeah, maybe it was

just all Hollywood magic

:

01:16:46,826 --> 01:16:47,046

Katie: yes.

:

01:16:48,946 --> 01:16:52,266

I wanna get your thoughts

on the sanitorium.

:

01:16:52,406 --> 01:16:58,406

So cut to after the perfect

ending with Kurt and Dana Delaney.

:

01:16:58,746 --> 01:17:02,206

We actually, to your point about

it, petering out, like each

:

01:17:02,206 --> 01:17:03,606

scene gets lesser and lesser.

:

01:17:03,676 --> 01:17:07,806

Then we cut to the

sanitorium where, you know,

:

01:17:07,986 --> 01:17:08,206

we

:

01:17:08,306 --> 01:17:09,106

Hal: Doc Holiday is

:

01:17:09,566 --> 01:17:09,916

Katie: dying

:

01:17:10,291 --> 01:17:11,071

Hal: on his deathbed.

:

01:17:11,071 --> 01:17:11,351

Yeah,

:

01:17:11,416 --> 01:17:13,916

Katie: and we can tell that

Kurt goes there every day.

:

01:17:14,256 --> 01:17:16,186

what did you think about that final scene?

:

01:17:16,336 --> 01:17:18,066

Like their exchanges and

:

01:17:18,731 --> 01:17:19,571

Hal: I, you know what?

:

01:17:19,651 --> 01:17:20,411

I didn't mind it.

:

01:17:20,591 --> 01:17:25,041

I thought that was, a nice, farewell

to his character and, you know,

:

01:17:25,471 --> 01:17:29,361

Kurt trying to, you know, humor

him and or Wyatt trying to humor

:

01:17:29,461 --> 01:17:31,050

him and play some cards with him.

:

01:17:31,251 --> 01:17:32,050

I didn't mind that,

:

01:17:33,236 --> 01:17:33,356

Katie: I.

:

01:17:33,741 --> 01:17:36,621

Hal: being tied up because yeah,

he was dying the whole movie.

:

01:17:37,201 --> 01:17:39,061

So, yeah, let's see him kick the bucket.

:

01:17:39,641 --> 01:17:45,681

but, yeah, didn't mind it, but it

seemed like, again, we hit some high

:

01:17:45,761 --> 01:17:50,041

notes and then it was a slow fade

toward the end with all these retros,

:

01:17:50,111 --> 01:17:52,161

with all these scenes tacked on.

:

01:17:52,581 --> 01:17:54,641

It just felt, uh, like.

:

01:17:55,866 --> 01:18:00,646

Uh, let's, we got a lot of business

to do at the end of this movie.

:

01:18:00,646 --> 01:18:02,925

Let's clean up this

storyline, this storyline.

:

01:18:02,925 --> 01:18:04,786

Let's round off, this character story.

:

01:18:05,166 --> 01:18:05,386

So,

:

01:18:05,711 --> 01:18:06,001

Katie: Yeah,

:

01:18:06,626 --> 01:18:06,916

Hal: yeah.

:

01:18:07,071 --> 01:18:08,081

Katie: because there was

:

01:18:08,096 --> 01:18:14,406

Hal: it, comes in that flurry of scenes,

but, substantively, I didn't mind it,

:

01:18:15,281 --> 01:18:15,601

Katie: I like

:

01:18:15,601 --> 01:18:15,800

the

:

01:18:15,800 --> 01:18:18,921

line about, you know, or the

message like, go live your life.

:

01:18:18,951 --> 01:18:19,601

Live for me.

:

01:18:19,601 --> 01:18:21,800

Like yes, just, yeah, go live.

:

01:18:22,166 --> 01:18:22,456

Hal: yeah,

:

01:18:22,550 --> 01:18:23,111

like that too.

:

01:18:23,211 --> 01:18:23,791

That's nice.

:

01:18:24,706 --> 01:18:29,206

Katie: but there was an earlier like

fake out kind of death scene with Doc

:

01:18:29,206 --> 01:18:31,366

that I liked much better actually.

:

01:18:31,611 --> 01:18:32,031

Hal: Mm-Hmm?

:

01:18:32,601 --> 01:18:34,021

Katie: Uh, and then dot comes and

:

01:18:34,061 --> 01:18:34,921

Hal: Oh, with him and

:

01:18:35,251 --> 01:18:35,541

Katie: with

:

01:18:35,541 --> 01:18:36,641

Hal: Oh, with him and his lady,

:

01:18:36,691 --> 01:18:40,541

Katie: know where like he's at

the ranch and he and Kurt say

:

01:18:40,541 --> 01:18:41,421

goodbye to each other.

:

01:18:41,421 --> 01:18:43,621

Essentially, Kurt's led

to believe he's dying.

:

01:18:43,621 --> 01:18:46,061

but then he shows up to kill Johnny Ringo.

:

01:18:47,300 --> 01:18:47,521

Hal: Yes.

:

01:18:47,591 --> 01:18:51,231

Katie: Just before Kurt arrives,

giving him the second opportunity to

:

01:18:51,231 --> 01:18:52,711

use the I'm your huckleberry line.

:

01:18:53,726 --> 01:18:54,016

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:18:55,441 --> 01:19:00,241

Katie: the death scene, though, I

did think that the, I don't know

:

01:19:00,241 --> 01:19:04,321

who, like, if this is the costume

people or the, effects people.

:

01:19:05,461 --> 01:19:06,481

Doc did look sick.

:

01:19:07,191 --> 01:19:08,401

Like they, I thought they

:

01:19:08,401 --> 01:19:09,761

did a good job of making him look

:

01:19:09,941 --> 01:19:10,361

sweaty

:

01:19:10,526 --> 01:19:11,326

Hal: makeup and effects.

:

01:19:11,476 --> 01:19:11,766

Yeah.

:

01:19:11,826 --> 01:19:13,526

Oh, and pale, sweaty.

:

01:19:13,751 --> 01:19:14,601

Katie: Eyes are red.

:

01:19:14,651 --> 01:19:14,941

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:19:15,011 --> 01:19:16,501

Just a sickly palor.

:

01:19:16,550 --> 01:19:19,211

Katie: And then he laid on

a bed of ice for that scene.

:

01:19:19,491 --> 01:19:20,371

Apparently he had them.

:

01:19:21,071 --> 01:19:21,871

So that he

:

01:19:21,871 --> 01:19:22,631

would be shaking.

:

01:19:22,861 --> 01:19:23,951

Yeah, he would be shaking

:

01:19:24,011 --> 01:19:25,791

and uncomfortable and

it would be more real.

:

01:19:28,011 --> 01:19:32,061

Speaking of that famous line, I'm your

huckleberry, were you aware of the,

:

01:19:32,061 --> 01:19:34,421

controversy over what he actually says?

:

01:19:34,481 --> 01:19:35,421

If that's what he says?

:

01:19:35,851 --> 01:19:36,901

Were you aware of any of that?

:

01:19:37,131 --> 01:19:38,671

Hal: No, I wasn't.

:

01:19:38,721 --> 01:19:43,941

Katie: so back in the day, they

would like, on a casket, they

:

01:19:43,941 --> 01:19:45,141

would call 'em like huckles.

:

01:19:45,721 --> 01:19:49,581

So they would, instead of a pallbearer,

they would call them huckle bearers.

:

01:19:50,881 --> 01:19:51,101

So

:

01:19:51,891 --> 01:19:55,901

some, there was this school of thought

that he says, I'm your huckle bearer.

:

01:19:56,781 --> 01:19:57,501

'cause he kind of says it

:

01:19:57,501 --> 01:19:58,101

with an accent.

:

01:19:58,121 --> 01:20:05,181

But he, he doesn't, he does actually

say, I'm your huckleberry, meaning I.

:

01:20:05,691 --> 01:20:06,331

I mean, business.

:

01:20:06,431 --> 01:20:07,371

I'm the man for the job,

:

01:20:08,550 --> 01:20:08,841

Hal: yeah.

:

01:20:08,901 --> 01:20:13,501

Katie: there's some thought that might

have come from like Mark Twain's,

:

01:20:13,771 --> 01:20:14,781

huckleberry Finn.

:

01:20:15,011 --> 01:20:15,861

Hal: Finn or something?

:

01:20:15,861 --> 01:20:16,221

Mm-Hmm.

:

01:20:16,300 --> 01:20:16,701

. Mm-Hmm.

:

01:20:16,961 --> 01:20:17,181

.

Katie: But

:

01:20:17,381 --> 01:20:17,581

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:20:17,691 --> 01:20:18,671

Katie: you heard it first here.

:

01:20:18,911 --> 01:20:19,071

Everyone,

:

01:20:19,231 --> 01:20:19,471

Hal: of the,

:

01:20:20,211 --> 01:20:20,831

Katie: he says

:

01:20:20,831 --> 01:20:21,391

Huckleberry.

:

01:20:22,550 --> 01:20:24,321

Hal: nowadays they, someone

will say something like, yeah,

:

01:20:24,321 --> 01:20:25,361

you got the right one for that.

:

01:20:25,921 --> 01:20:26,211

Katie: Yeah.

:

01:20:26,261 --> 01:20:26,550

yeah.

:

01:20:27,161 --> 01:20:27,451

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:20:27,631 --> 01:20:28,091

Oh yeah.

:

01:20:28,800 --> 01:20:30,741

Or you're messing with the wrong one

:

01:20:31,101 --> 01:20:31,521

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

:

01:20:31,611 --> 01:20:32,611

'

Hal: cause you don't wanna mess with me

:

01:20:32,891 --> 01:20:33,111

Katie: No.

:

01:20:33,571 --> 01:20:34,271

And I wouldn't

:

01:20:34,531 --> 01:20:35,651

Hal: messing with the right one

:

01:20:36,001 --> 01:20:37,251

because I'm up.

:

01:20:37,571 --> 01:20:38,851

'cause I'm up for a fight.

:

01:20:39,101 --> 01:20:39,681

Katie: up and down.

:

01:20:39,821 --> 01:20:41,441

All the English language is wild.

:

01:20:42,671 --> 01:20:42,891

Hal: Oh

:

01:20:42,951 --> 01:20:44,281

Katie: yeah, we won't get into that.

:

01:20:44,451 --> 01:20:45,001

Let's see.

:

01:20:45,781 --> 01:20:52,300

Um, Russell, did you know that he, um,

named his son Wyatt after Wyatt Earp?

:

01:20:53,591 --> 01:20:54,331

Hal: Oh, funny.

:

01:20:54,441 --> 01:20:54,731

Yeah.

:

01:20:54,925 --> 01:20:56,946

Katie: Before he played

Wyatt Earp, like he went

:

01:20:57,071 --> 01:20:57,891

Hal: in his own right.

:

01:20:58,046 --> 01:21:00,746

Katie: he went on to play the role later.

:

01:21:00,746 --> 01:21:01,586

there's a few other

:

01:21:01,586 --> 01:21:03,066

little trivia pieces.

:

01:21:04,371 --> 01:21:04,791

Hal: Please.

:

01:21:07,876 --> 01:21:10,066

Katie: Kevin Jar wanted

David Bowie to play Doc.

:

01:21:12,011 --> 01:21:13,031

Hal: Oh, that would've been

:

01:21:13,346 --> 01:21:13,766

Katie: Mm-Hmm.

:

01:21:15,156 --> 01:21:18,206

very Willam Defoe, was also considered.

:

01:21:19,321 --> 01:21:20,541

Hal: Ooh, great actor.

:

01:21:20,711 --> 01:21:21,381

Great actor.

:

01:21:21,925 --> 01:21:26,216

Katie: well, apparently he, the, he

didn't get it because he was in a

:

01:21:26,216 --> 01:21:30,816

controversial role called The Last

Temptation of Christ in:

:

01:21:30,816 --> 01:21:32,175

they wanted somebody more safe.

:

01:21:32,296 --> 01:21:32,416

I

:

01:21:32,501 --> 01:21:32,791

Hal: Yeah.

:

01:21:32,791 --> 01:21:33,951

The Scorsese film.

:

01:21:34,026 --> 01:21:34,706

Katie: I haven't seen that.

:

01:21:34,766 --> 01:21:35,706

I'm gonna have to watch it yet.

:

01:21:36,076 --> 01:21:36,626

Watch it.

:

01:21:36,641 --> 01:21:40,741

Hal: I haven't seen it either, but I'm

well aware of the controversy around it.

:

01:21:40,741 --> 01:21:43,811

It just, you know, it was,

tried to, he tried to present a

:

01:21:43,811 --> 01:21:45,851

three-dimensional picture of, Christ.

:

01:21:45,951 --> 01:21:46,171

And

:

01:21:46,306 --> 01:21:47,636

yeah, that, that'll step on some

:

01:21:47,906 --> 01:21:48,756

Katie: Yeah, of course it will.

:

01:21:48,976 --> 01:21:52,116

in speaking of Billy Baldwin, he,

this is, he auditioned for the

:

01:21:52,116 --> 01:21:55,036

role of Doc, Mickey Rourke turned

down the role of Johnny Ringo.

:

01:21:56,566 --> 01:21:57,425

Hal: Oh, bad move.

:

01:21:57,425 --> 01:21:57,706

Mickey

:

01:21:57,846 --> 01:21:58,136

Katie: Yeah.

:

01:21:58,796 --> 01:22:03,876

Jar wanted Liam Neeson for Wyatt

Earp and Richard Gere was interested.

:

01:22:06,276 --> 01:22:06,496

Jar

:

01:22:06,616 --> 01:22:08,456

wanted Tommy Lee Jones for Curly Bill.

:

01:22:08,526 --> 01:22:09,376

That would've been good,

:

01:22:10,376 --> 01:22:10,876

Hal: Oh yeah,

:

01:22:11,116 --> 01:22:11,616

Katie: bad guy.

:

01:22:12,146 --> 01:22:14,866

there's several of those, like what ifs.

:

01:22:15,446 --> 01:22:16,806

I always find those really interesting.

:

01:22:16,866 --> 01:22:17,766

So there's

:

01:22:17,766 --> 01:22:20,886

lots of trivia, there's lots of stuff

about this movie you guys, and while

:

01:22:21,006 --> 01:22:25,966

I appreciate some of the handsome men

that we were treated to, I'd rather

:

01:22:26,066 --> 01:22:28,166

not stay in the wild, wild west.

:

01:22:28,746 --> 01:22:31,766

So we must now return to

the present day reality.

:

01:22:32,016 --> 01:22:36,966

Until next time, Hal, I cannot

thank you enough for joining me to

:

01:22:36,966 --> 01:22:41,966

relive:

this classic westerns filled with.

:

01:22:43,046 --> 01:22:44,196

Super notable actors.

:

01:22:44,856 --> 01:22:45,396

Do you have any

:

01:22:45,396 --> 01:22:46,636

final thoughts about the movie?

:

01:22:46,856 --> 01:22:49,476

And then please don't forget to

tell us where we can find you.

:

01:22:50,626 --> 01:22:50,916

Hal: Sure.

:

01:22:51,186 --> 01:22:51,476

Yeah.

:

01:22:51,476 --> 01:22:52,316

This was wonderful.

:

01:22:52,466 --> 01:22:55,996

Like a lot of memory lane here

to, from everything from ACE of

:

01:22:55,996 --> 01:23:02,556

Bass to Murder she wrote, and,

the amount of yeah, like actors in

:

01:23:02,566 --> 01:23:04,196

small parts populating this film.

:

01:23:04,376 --> 01:23:05,636

It reminds me.

:

01:23:06,981 --> 01:23:09,671

A little bit of, black Hawk down.

:

01:23:10,231 --> 01:23:12,731

'cause when you go and watch

that movie, it's oh my goodness,

:

01:23:12,761 --> 01:23:13,771

he's in it and he's in it.

:

01:23:13,771 --> 01:23:17,050

All of these actors before they

blew up kind of in their own right.

:

01:23:17,401 --> 01:23:19,511

It's kind of, it's just

got a, like a stacked

:

01:23:19,941 --> 01:23:20,231

cast.

:

01:23:20,731 --> 01:23:24,061

And, this was wonderful

to revisit this film.

:

01:23:24,221 --> 01:23:28,611

I think a very solid Western, not

the best Western of the nineties.

:

01:23:28,731 --> 01:23:31,871

I think that, definitely goes to

Clint Eastwood's, unforgiven, which

:

01:23:31,911 --> 01:23:34,550

I mentioned earlier,

academy Award-winning film.

:

01:23:35,050 --> 01:23:38,461

but, yeah, strong performances

and just an iconic turn from

:

01:23:38,821 --> 01:23:40,491

Al Kilmer and, Kurt Russell.

:

01:23:40,711 --> 01:23:43,831

you're just, this is a great reminder,

just how much I like that guy and how

:

01:23:43,831 --> 01:23:45,271

much I want to grab a brewski with him.

:

01:23:45,691 --> 01:23:45,911

Uh.

:

01:23:46,506 --> 01:23:50,436

Katie, uh, so much fun chatting

with you and, great research.

:

01:23:50,496 --> 01:23:51,316

you really bring it.

:

01:23:51,336 --> 01:23:51,556

So,

:

01:23:51,686 --> 01:23:52,186

Katie: Oh, thanks.

:

01:23:52,646 --> 01:23:57,016

Hal: kudos and kudos to you

for, uh, giving me all these

:

01:23:57,116 --> 01:23:58,456

fun facts and cool info.

:

01:23:58,756 --> 01:24:05,466

and if anybody's listening, uh, wants,

to see, some, pop culture, stuff, and,

:

01:24:06,126 --> 01:24:10,616

some comedy and maybe an occasional baby

picture now and again, you can follow

:

01:24:10,675 --> 01:24:16,976

me at Hal Rudnick on Instagram and on

Twitter, which is now x, at Hal Rudnick.

:

01:24:18,476 --> 01:24:21,136

Katie: And thank you all

for listening or watching.

:

01:24:21,716 --> 01:24:25,416

If you like the show and have not

offered a rating or review yet,

:

01:24:25,766 --> 01:24:27,336

this is your official reminder.

:

01:24:27,986 --> 01:24:31,696

Until next time, be kind, rewind.
