Please enjoy:“Marge the Barge”
Please enjoy:by Mary E. Lowd "You're distracted,"
Please enjoy:Lizzie said. The asymmetrical white splotch on her tabby face made her look sloppy and unprepared,
Please enjoy:even when she was dressed in her prim skating leotard with her ice skates tightly laced up her hind-paws.
Please enjoy:"Yeah..." Marge admitted.
Please enjoy:She couldn't help glancing back to the bleachers every few seconds to keep an eye on her litter of pups.
Please enjoy:Five big Newfoundland puppies can cause a lot of damage when they're unattended,
Please enjoy:and Marge was barely attending them.
Please enjoy:She'd left them with a bag of snacks and games,
Please enjoy:and now she was down on the ice.
Please enjoy:"I need you to concentrate,"
Please enjoy:Lizzie said. "Give me your paw."
Please enjoy:Marge held out her big brown paw.
Please enjoy:She felt like a bear on the ice with all these cats and small-breed dogs.
Please enjoy:There was even a pair of squirrels in red-spangled leotards doing flips and pirouettes down at the far end of the rink.
Please enjoy:Their tails twirled around them.
Please enjoy:Marge didn't know how to skate like that.
Please enjoy:She only knew hockey.
Please enjoy:Marge the Barge. That's what her team had called her.
Please enjoy:Now what was she supposed to be?
Please enjoy:Margerina Ballerina? Ugh.
Please enjoy:She didn't want to be a figure skater.
Please enjoy:She didn't like the plain black leotard Lizzie had convinced her to wear.
Please enjoy:It was too form fitting for a bulky dog like her,
Please enjoy:mashing her shaggy fur down.
Please enjoy:She missed her baggy hockey jersey.
Please enjoy:Lizzie took Marge's paw and the two of them, small tabby and big Newfoundland,
Please enjoy:skated out onto the ice in tandem.
Please enjoy:"I feel ridiculous," Marge said.
Please enjoy:"Couldn't we do this later? When there aren't so many figure skaters around?"
Please enjoy:Lizzie's tail swished.
Please enjoy:Marge could feel the little cat picking up speed,
Please enjoy:but she didn't speed up with her.
Please enjoy:Her paw let go, and Lizzie skated away.
Please enjoy:Abruptly, Lizzie pirouetted --
Please enjoy:elegant, fast, feline.
Please enjoy:Everything Marge wasn't.
Please enjoy:She stopped, facing Marge.
Please enjoy:"What?" Lizzie hissed.
Please enjoy:"You'd rather practice during open skate?
Please enjoy:With your litter of pups out here, falling all over the ice?"
Please enjoy:Marge glanced at her pups in the bleachers again.
Please enjoy:Jo Jo and Kiki were laughing and watching her.
Please enjoy:Were they laughing at her?
Please enjoy:Probably not. But Marge's face burned hot under her thick fur anyway,
Please enjoy:in spite of the ice cold air.
Please enjoy:"I don't want to do this," Marge
Please enjoy:woofed, voice low.
Please enjoy:Lizzie didn't lower her voice.
Please enjoy:She raised her voice and yowled, "Skate!
Please enjoy:Or you're nothing but a coward!"
Please enjoy:Jo Jo and Kiki were definitely laughing now.
Please enjoy:"You're a coward," Lizzie merowled.
Please enjoy:"And you have no business on the ice."
Please enjoy:Something inside Marge snapped.
Please enjoy:She belonged on the ice.
Please enjoy:She belonged there more than these
Please enjoy:frippery little cats and dogs did.
Please enjoy:When she skated, she could fly.
Please enjoy:She could skate faster and stronger than any little tabby, squirrel, or Chihuahua.
Please enjoy:Marge shoved off with her hind-paw.
Please enjoy:She put all her weight into pushing her bladed paws into the ice.
Please enjoy:As she whipped past Lizzie,
Please enjoy:she reached out and grabbed the little cat's paw.
Please enjoy:The two of them skated, side-by-side, around the rink,
Please enjoy:and when they returned to where they'd started on the ice,
Please enjoy:Marge slammed her blade hard to stop.
Please enjoy:Lizzie zipped past her,
Please enjoy:and Marge grabbed the small cat around the waist,
Please enjoy:flung her into the air,
Please enjoy:higher than any of the other skaters.
Please enjoy:Marge caught Lizzie on her way back down and cradled the stunned tabby in her giant arms.
Please enjoy:She looked Lizzie in the eye and said,
Please enjoy:"I belong on the ice."
Please enjoy:Then Marge dumped the nimble tabby back on her own feet.
Please enjoy:Lizzie's skates skidded,
Please enjoy:and she twisted her lithe striped form into a quick pirouette
Please enjoy:to cover for the moment of indignity.
Please enjoy:"All right," Lizzie meowed,
Please enjoy:straightening the skirt on her leotard.
Please enjoy:"Then let's start practicing.
Please enjoy:I'll teach you how to do a basic toe jump."
Please enjoy:Lizzie explained
Please enjoy:how to use the jagged edge at the front of the figure skate --
Please enjoy:something hockey skates didn't have --
Please enjoy:to catch the ice and kick yourself into the air.
Please enjoy:Marge grumbled, but she cooperated.
Please enjoy:When it came down to it, she'd
Please enjoy:rather be on the ice, being ordered around by a little tabby,
Please enjoy:than at home moping about her injury.
Please enjoy:She'd already seen three doctors.
Please enjoy:The peripheral vision wasn't coming back.
Please enjoy:If she wanted to skate competitively,
Please enjoy:it was prance around in a stupid leotard with Lizzie
Please enjoy:or nothing. So Marge pranced.
Please enjoy:Very badly. Her first attempt at a toe jump led to a face plant.
Please enjoy:She was used to smashing her muzzle into the ice --
Please enjoy:pro-hockey was a rough sport --
Please enjoy:but she hadn't expected to fall while figure skating.
Please enjoy:No one was trying to knock her down, so what reason did she have to fall?
Please enjoy:Five more attempted toe jumps led to five new ways to fall.
Please enjoy:It was like the ice itself was out to get her.
Please enjoy:Marge felt bruised all over.
Please enjoy:Her body hadn't taken a beating like this since she was a pup.
Please enjoy:Slamming into other hockey players --
Please enjoy:everyone coated in layers of padding --
Please enjoy:was one thing. Repeatedly slamming into the hard flat ice itself?
Please enjoy:With only a flimsy leotard to cover her?
Please enjoy:That was something else.
Please enjoy:When Marge said she belonged on the ice,
Please enjoy:this wasn't what she meant.
Please enjoy:"I give up," Marge woofed,
Please enjoy:butt planted on the ice.
Please enjoy:"You and all these other figure skaters are clearly wizards. You've sold your souls for dark magic,
Please enjoy:and I already sold mine into slavery to my puppies.
Please enjoy:So, I'm never going to get this."
Please enjoy:Marge expected Lizzie to argue,
Please enjoy:bully, or plead. But she didn't.
Please enjoy:She just skated off,
Please enjoy:ears flattened against her head like she was really angry.
Please enjoy:She kicked one hindpaw hard into the ice
Please enjoy:and jumped into a triple aerial spin.
Please enjoy:She followed it with a double spin in the other direction.
Please enjoy:She skated all the way around the rink,
Please enjoy:spinning so much it made Marge dizzy to watch her.
Please enjoy:When Lizzie got back to Marge,
Please enjoy:she held a paw out to the big dog,
Please enjoy:ceremonially offering to help her up.
Please enjoy:Marge ignored the little tabby's paw and lumbered up from the ice on her own.
Please enjoy:It was time. Her tail was getting cold.
Please enjoy:"Practice is the same time tomorrow,"
Please enjoy:Lizzie said. "I'll expect a better attitude.
Please enjoy:attitude." Then she skated away again.
Please enjoy:This time her ears held high
Please enjoy:and her striped tail swishing.
Please enjoy:"You could at least give me an inspirational speech!"
Please enjoy:Marge woofed after her, but Lizzie was clearly done with her for the day.
Please enjoy:That was okay with Marge.
Please enjoy:She was done with figure skating entirely.
Please enjoy:She couldn't get off the ice and out of the stupid figure skates Lizzie had bought for her
Please enjoy:fast enough. It had been ridiculous of Lizzie to special order
Please enjoy:figure skates large enough for a Newfoundland.
Please enjoy:Marge had warned Lizzie that she wasn't sure about figure skating, so it was Lizzie's own fault for wasting all that money.
Please enjoy:While Marge unlaced the skates,
Please enjoy:her pups hopped over the bleachers and swarmed around her.
Please enjoy:"Mom, you were terrible!"
Please enjoy:Jo Jo barked. One of the boys, Tim, theatrically plopped onto the ground at her feet and shouted,
Please enjoy:"Splat! Just like that, Mom! You were just like that!"
Please enjoy:"Splat! Splat!" Jo Jo copied him,
Please enjoy:falling repeatedly to the sticky concrete floor.
Please enjoy:Kiki, Tim, and Fred giggled.
Please enjoy:But Junior didn't say anything until Marge had gathered up the bags of snacks and games.
Please enjoy:As she ushered her rowdy puppies out of the ice rink, Junior came up close to her and whispered,
Please enjoy:"You look beautiful in your leotard."
Please enjoy:Marge threw an arm around Junior's shoulder
Please enjoy:and gave him a squeeze.
Please enjoy:He was sweet, but that didn't change how she felt about figure skating.
Please enjoy:She didn't skate to be beautiful.
Please enjoy:She skated to fly. #
Please enjoy:The next afternoon, Marge drove over to pick her pups up from school, telling herself it would be nice to spend some quality time with them instead of
Please enjoy:rushing off to the ice rink.
Please enjoy:That had been the one advantage of being kicked off the hockey team:
Please enjoy:more evenings and afternoons free.
Please enjoy:Marge parked as the bell rang.
Please enjoy:She sat in the car and watched puppies and kittens
Please enjoy:stream out of the front doors of the school.
Please enjoy:Her pups were easy to spot --
Please enjoy:nearly a head taller than any of their classmates,
Please enjoy:shaggy dark fur spilling over their collars.
Please enjoy:Instead of climbing into the back of the minivan,
Please enjoy:Jo Jo threw open the front passenger door and leaned in to say,
Please enjoy:"Hey Mom, can I go to Allison's?
Please enjoy:Kiki and I got invited for dinner."
Please enjoy:Allison was a tiny little Chihuahua.
Please enjoy:Marge was amused by the idea of her parents trying to feed Jo Jo and Kiki --
Please enjoy:they could probably eat as much at one dinner as Allison ate in a week.
Please enjoy:But Marge wasn't about to get in the way of her kids' social life.
Please enjoy:"No problem," she told Jo Jo.
Please enjoy:"Just call if you need a ride after dinner."
Please enjoy:Before Jo Jo could swing the door shut,
Please enjoy:Fred pushed past her and said, "My study group is meeting in the school cafeteria.
Please enjoy:Taylor said I could ride home with her.
Please enjoy:her." He slammed the door
Please enjoy:and ran off before Marge could tell him that was okay.
Please enjoy:Tim and Junior actually got into the back seat and strapped in,
Please enjoy:but Tim explained he needed a ride to the city library.
Please enjoy:"I need to research the lifecycle of butterflies."
Please enjoy:"For a paper?" Marge asked,
Please enjoy:pulling the car back onto the street.
Please enjoy:"No, I just want to read about butterflies.
Please enjoy:butterflies." He chattered about a field guide he'd found in the school library for the rest of the drive.
Please enjoy:"But the city library will have so much more!" Marge let Tim out in front of the city library and told him that she'd be back to pick him up when the library closed --
Please enjoy:just before dinner time.
Please enjoy:That left her and Junior alone in a big car,
Please enjoy:meant to hold a family of seven Newfoundlands.
Please enjoy:Marge looked at Junior in the rearview mirror,
Please enjoy:all alone in the back of the car.
Please enjoy:"I guess it's just us, kiddo.
Please enjoy:What do you want to do?
Please enjoy:Ice cream?" Junior pointed at the bag with Marge's leotard and ice skates
Please enjoy:on the front passenger seat.
Please enjoy:"Don't you have skating practice?"
Please enjoy:"I'm done skating," Marge said.
Please enjoy:"I only have those here to take them back to Lizzie."
Please enjoy:"Oh," Junior said. Then he got quiet.
Please enjoy:He did that sometimes.
Please enjoy:He was the only one of her pups that Marge could ever describe as quiet.
Please enjoy:"We can do whatever you want -- go to a playground, take a walk by the river, whatever." To Marge's horror,
Please enjoy:Junior said, "Well... actually...
Please enjoy:I kind of wanted to watch the figure skaters again."
Please enjoy:Marge didn't want to go back to the ice rink,
Please enjoy:but she did need to take her skates back to Lizzie.
Please enjoy:It was possible Lizzie could still return them.
Please enjoy:They'd barely been used.
Please enjoy:Marge supposed it wouldn't be so bad to sit in the bleachers with Junior
Please enjoy:and watch all the little dogs, cats, and squirrels doing their pirouettes for a while
Please enjoy:after dropping the skates off.
Please enjoy:"Okay," she agreed, unenthusiastically.
Please enjoy:Of course, Marge should have known that Lizzie wouldn't let her simply drop the skates off.
Please enjoy:That little tabby talked circles around her -- while Junior said unhelpful things like, "You
Please enjoy:would look so majestic doing a spin, Mom!" --
Please enjoy:until Marge found herself changing out of her shoes
Please enjoy:and into the special ordered
Please enjoy:figure skates. At least, this time, Lizzie didn't make her wear the ridiculous leotard. Marge
Please enjoy:left her street clothes on.
Please enjoy:"We'll keep our skates on the ice today. No aerials.
Please enjoy:aerials." Lizzie led the way out to the ice.
Please enjoy:"Just spins." The tabby's skates hit the ice,
Please enjoy:and she twirled away, saying,
Please enjoy:"Really, it's my fault for starting you on aerials yesterday.
Please enjoy:You'll like spins much better."
Please enjoy:Marge grunted. She didn't feel like talking.
Please enjoy:She didn't feel like spinning.
Please enjoy:But she did love the glide when her skates hit the ice.
Please enjoy:Her body automatically relaxed,
Please enjoy:and she followed Lizzie out, trying to ignore Junior's well-meant cheers.
Please enjoy:"You can do it, Mom!"
Please enjoy:None of the other skaters had anyone cheering for them during practice.
Please enjoy:Yet, even though his cheering made her feel conspicuous -- not that her size didn't do that enough --
Please enjoy:it still warmed her heart.
Please enjoy:Sometimes, she felt invisible to her pups,
Please enjoy:nothing more than a ride to and from school or the library.
Please enjoy:It was nice to have one of them cheering her on.
Please enjoy:"All, right," Lizzie said, holding her paws out.
Please enjoy:"Put your arms out like you're a holding a beach ball."
Please enjoy:Marge copied the tabby's pose.
Please enjoy:"Move them off to the side and-
Please enjoy:-" Lizzie swung her arms,
Please enjoy:bent her knees, pulled her paws in,
Please enjoy:and was suddenly spinning.
Please enjoy:Dark magic. "Make sure to pull your paws in close.
Please enjoy:But if you're spinning too fast, put them back out.
Please enjoy:out." Lizzie moved her arms in and out,
Please enjoy:speeding and slowing her spin.
Please enjoy:Out of the corner of her eyes,
Please enjoy:Marge saw Junior in the bleachers spinning around, copying Lizzie.
Please enjoy:Nearly half a dozen other skaters on the ice were doing spins at that moment too.
Please enjoy:One skater, a spindly Italian Greyhound in a dark blue leotard, had stopped skating to watch Marge's lesson.
Please enjoy:She didn't know what his problem was, but she suddenly felt like the one thing she could do to make him stop staring
Please enjoy:was to start spinning.
Please enjoy:She swung her arms,
Please enjoy:bent her knees, and pulled her arms in close.
Please enjoy:The ice rink spun around her.
Please enjoy:Marge felt like a mountain,
Please enjoy:steady in the center of a whirlwind.
Please enjoy:As her spin slowed down,
Please enjoy:her jowly face broke into a grin.
Please enjoy:That had felt like flying.
Please enjoy:Marge spun again.
Please enjoy:And again. "I see you've found a student, Lizzie,"
Please enjoy:the Italian Greyhound said.
Please enjoy:"Given up competing and switched to teaching, have we?"
Please enjoy:His words were full of condescension, but his voice was full of kindness.
Please enjoy:It was very confusing.
Please enjoy:Especially since he kept zipping past Marge's vision.
Please enjoy:She slowed her spin
Please enjoy:and came to a stop.
Please enjoy:"A partner, not a student,"
Please enjoy:Lizzie said. Her voice was even,
Please enjoy:but her tail twitched furiously.
Please enjoy:Marge decided she'd rather be a participant than an object in this conversation:
Please enjoy:"I've made no promises.
Please enjoy:promises." She looked the Italian Greyhound up and down.
Please enjoy:He was slightly taller than Lizzie, but he probably weighed less.
Please enjoy:He was so thin he looked like he could have been made by bending up a piece of wire.
Please enjoy:"Who are you?" "Gerard.
Please enjoy:Lizzie's ex-partner.
Please enjoy:-partner." He held a miniscule paw out.
Please enjoy:Marge tried to shake it gently.
Please enjoy:He looked like she could crush him by breathing on him.
Please enjoy:"We're busy," Lizzie snapped.
Please enjoy:Gerard smiled apologetically at Marge,
Please enjoy:as if offering his condolences for her having to put up with Lizzie.
Please enjoy:"Well, best of luck.
Please enjoy:I'm sure you're on a tight schedule.
Please enjoy:schedule." He skated away, lazily zigging and zagging,
Please enjoy:almost ostentatiously keeping his skates firmly on the ice
Please enjoy:until he reached the far side of the rink.
Please enjoy:Then he kicked one hindpaw into the ice
Please enjoy:and launched into a quadruple aerial spin.
Please enjoy:It was very impressive
Please enjoy:and highly intimidating.
Please enjoy:"I don't know if I'll ever be able to do that,"
Please enjoy:Marge said. She could see why Junior liked watching the figure skaters though.
Please enjoy:Their dark magic was beautiful.
Please enjoy:"By the way, what did he mean about a tight schedule?"
Please enjoy:"Don't worry about that,"
Please enjoy:Lizzie said. "Let's try a one-pawed spin now." #
Please enjoy:Marge and Lizzie practiced every day.
Please enjoy:Most days, Junior came and did his homework in the bleachers.
Please enjoy:Some days, Marge had all five of her puppies cheering for and laughing at her.
Please enjoy:Unfortunately, she gave them plenty of opportunities to laugh.
Please enjoy:She was good at spins,
Please enjoy:and Lizzie said she had an uncanny knack for synchronized choreography.
Please enjoy:But Marge couldn't get the lift that she needed for aerials.
Please enjoy:Every time she tried to kick herself up into the air,
Please enjoy:she ended up with her tail -- or her face -- smashed into the ice.
Please enjoy:"Still having trouble with those toe jumps?"
Please enjoy:Gerard had taken to commenting on Marge's lessons nearly daily.
Please enjoy:He punctuated his question
Please enjoy:with an infuriatingly perfect
Please enjoy:single aerial spin.
Please enjoy:"Maybe you need more speed going in,
Please enjoy:since you have more mass to lift.
Please enjoy:lift." He looked Marge up and down.
Please enjoy:She felt very large under the tiny dog's scrutiny.
Please enjoy:"I'll get it," she woofed.
Please enjoy:But when Gerard skated away,
Please enjoy:she turned to Lizzie and said, very quietly,
Please enjoy:"What if I never get it?"
Please enjoy:Lizzie frowned, but she said,
Please enjoy:"Then I'll do more jumps to make up for it. You'll do more throws.
Please enjoy:Maybe we should spend more time practicing those."
Please enjoy:"Will we get scored down for that?"
Please enjoy:Lizzie shook her head.
Please enjoy:"There are all sorts of different ways to score points.
Please enjoy:There have to be, otherwise you couldn't reasonably have a squirrel compete with any sort of dog.
Please enjoy:It wouldn't be fair.
Please enjoy:I mean, you've seen how high those squirrels can jump."
Please enjoy:Marge nodded. "But they can't get up the same level of momentum as even a small dog. They're too light.
Please enjoy:Anyway, it should even out.
Please enjoy:It's just a different type of routine than I'm used to."
Please enjoy:Marge watched Gerard practicing flips on the far side of the rink
Please enjoy:alone and tried to picture the kind of routine he might have done with Lizzie.
Please enjoy:She couldn't picture him lifting Lizzie for a throw jump at all.
Please enjoy:He didn't look strong enough.
Please enjoy:He might be big enough to lift a squirrel.
Please enjoy:"Does Gerard have a new partner?" Marge asked,
Please enjoy:realizing she hadn't seen him skate with anyone during the last few weeks.
Please enjoy:"No," Lizzie said. "He's entering as a single skater.
Please enjoy:He thinks I was holding him back." Lizzie's
Please enjoy:ears flattened,
Please enjoy:and her eyes flashed.
Please enjoy:"He's wrong. Let's get back to practicing.
Please enjoy:I'll teach you how to do a death spiral.
Please enjoy:You'll like it -- you anchor one toe in the ice,
Please enjoy:hold my paw, and I'll circle around you,
Please enjoy:leaned down almost parallel to the ice."
Please enjoy:The death spiral came easily to Marge.
Please enjoy:So did lifts, twist lifts,
Please enjoy:and every kind of throw jump.
Please enjoy:Marge and Lizzie's extreme size differential
Please enjoy:meant that they had the potential to do throws that most of the other figure skating couples
Please enjoy:didn't have a chance at.
Please enjoy:In addition to mere size,
Please enjoy:Marge had a lot of upper arm strength;
Please enjoy:she still had to throw a puppy or two over her shoulder sometimes if they started throwing tantrums.
Please enjoy:Lizzie weighed half of what one of her puppies did,
Please enjoy:so throwing the little tabby into the air was no problem.
Please enjoy:Lizzie's skills took care of the rest --
Please enjoy:with the height and speed Marge could give Lizzie,
Please enjoy:she had time for quadruple or quintuple loop and flip jumps.
Please enjoy:Together they looked
Please enjoy:amazing. Lizzie skated a storm around Marge's steady center.
Please enjoy:But Marge wondered if Lizzie really needed her.
Please enjoy:Her part could have been played by a catapult,
Please enjoy:a machine. Lizzie was the one really skating. #
Please enjoy:As the first local competition grew near, Lizzie arranged for several private sessions at the ice rink late in the evening, so they could practice with music
Please enjoy:and without the distraction of other skaters.
Please enjoy:Marge felt strange
Please enjoy:arriving at the first session.
Please enjoy:Everything was empty and quiet.
Please enjoy:Usually, she had Junior --
Please enjoy:if not five pups --
Please enjoy:jostling and bothering her on the drive over, but these sessions were well after the pups' bedtime.
Please enjoy:And the ice rink itself
Please enjoy:was deserted. When Marge had played hockey,
Please enjoy:there was a whole team on the ice, even for practices.
Please enjoy:The figure skating practices were usually crowded with figure skaters
Please enjoy:pursuing their own separate routines.
Please enjoy:But tonight, Lizzie was the lone cat on the ice.
Please enjoy:Marge watched Lizzie skating in loop de loops
Please enjoy:and figure eights for a while before revealing herself.
Please enjoy:She hadn't put her skates on yet,
Please enjoy:but she called out to Lizzie,
Please enjoy:"Watcha wearin'?
Please enjoy:It looks like a cheerleader getup.
Please enjoy:getup." The short pleated skirt was red and white;
Please enjoy:a picture of a megaphone was emblazoned on the chest.
Please enjoy:Lizzie skated over to the edge and said,
Please enjoy:"It is a cheerleader outfit.
Please enjoy:It's my costume for the competition.
Please enjoy:competition." She pointed at a bag on one of the bleachers.
Please enjoy:"Yours is in there."
Please enjoy:Marge's hackles rose.
Please enjoy:She could not stand the idea of wearing a cheerleading uniform.
Please enjoy:It was not going to happen.
Please enjoy:She went over to the bag
Please enjoy:and lifted the red and white garment out of it,
Please enjoy:touching it only with her blunt claws,
Please enjoy:like it was smelly, rotting fish.
Please enjoy:"I hope you like it,"
Please enjoy:Lizzie said. Marge blinked.
Please enjoy:This costume was different than Lizzie's.
Please enjoy:No skirt. A big '27' emblazoned on the front.
Please enjoy:"It's a jersey," Marge said.
Please enjoy:Well, it was a stylized costume version of a jersey, designed to match Lizzie's cheerleader outfit,
Please enjoy:but that was close enough.
Please enjoy:"I love it," Marge said,
Please enjoy:hugging the fake-jersey close to her.
Please enjoy:"Love it." "Go put it on,"
Please enjoy:Lizzie said. "We only have an hour. That's barely enough time for ten run-throughs."
Please enjoy:Once Marge was dressed,
Please enjoy:Lizzie ran her through the routine she'd choreographed for them.
Please enjoy:It played to Marge's strengths --
Please enjoy:she skated fast, spun a lot,
Please enjoy:and threw Lizzie around so much that the little cat might as well have been flying --
Please enjoy:her skates barely touched the ground.
Please enjoy:The music for the routine
Please enjoy:was perfect too -- a puppy-band pop song
Please enjoy:about cheering for the local team.
Please enjoy:It was bright, peppy,
Please enjoy:and matched their costumes.
Please enjoy:Marge was having the time of her life.
Please enjoy:She never would have believed it back when she was a pro-hockey player,
Please enjoy:but figure skating was fun.
Please enjoy:She didn't feel ridiculous at all.
Please enjoy:In fact, she was so excited to practice again that she arrived early for their private session the next night.
Please enjoy:Only to find Lizzie skating with Gerard.
Please enjoy:They skated together --
Please enjoy:splotchy tabby and spindly dog --
Please enjoy:mirroring each other's moves.
Please enjoy:Every one of Lizzie's spectacular toe jumps was doubled.
Please enjoy:They were tied together like a dancer and her shadow.
Please enjoy:They belonged together.
Please enjoy:Marge imagined herself in Gerard's place.
Please enjoy:Skating beside the light-footed tabby, Marge must look like a monumental blundering boulder,
Please enjoy:unable to even get her skates off the ground.
Please enjoy:Then she felt ridiculous.
Please enjoy:When Gerard and Lizzie finished their routine --
Please enjoy:skated to a stately piece of classical music,
Please enjoy:heavy on piano and violins ---
Please enjoy:Lizzie kept skating,
Please enjoy:oblivious to Marge watching them.
Please enjoy:Gerard left the ice
Please enjoy:and ran into Marge.
Please enjoy:"Oh, hello." He sat down on a bleacher
Please enjoy:and began unlacing his skates.
Please enjoy:They were so tiny and narrow,
Please enjoy:Marge could have fit them inside her own skates.
Please enjoy:Possibly two pair of them.
Please enjoy:"You were watching?"
Please enjoy:Marge didn't answer.
Please enjoy:She didn't start putting her own skates on either.
Please enjoy:"Lizzie's improved.
Please enjoy:Working with you has been good for her.
Please enjoy:I think she can finally pull off our old routine."
Please enjoy:"Your old routine?"
Please enjoy:Gerard finished with his skates and stood up.
Please enjoy:He was half Marge's height, so he had to look up at her.
Please enjoy:Yet Marge felt like he was looking down at her anyway.
Please enjoy:"I've spruced it up a bit.
Please enjoy:But, yes, I think we'll compete with basically the same routine.
Please enjoy:It was close last time.
Please enjoy:Now that Lizzie's skating better,
Please enjoy:I think we can finally win."
Please enjoy:Marge stared at the little dog dumbly.
Please enjoy:Gerard hung his skates over his shoulder,
Please enjoy:holding them by the laces.
Please enjoy:"Anyway, have a good lesson.
Please enjoy:I'm impressed that you've stuck with it so long."
Please enjoy:Marge was stunned,
Please enjoy:and she didn't know what to do.
Please enjoy:When Lizzie finally noticed her, the little cat skated over.
Please enjoy:"I didn't see you come in."
Please enjoy:Marge's heart clenched looking at the little tabby.
Please enjoy:As a hockey player, she'd had a whole team.
Please enjoy:As a figure skater,
Please enjoy:Lizzie was her team.
Please enjoy:Her whole team. "I thought Gerard was a single skater now,"
Please enjoy:Marge said. Lizzie had the audacity to laugh.
Please enjoy:"He didn't make it past the first round as a single skater.
Please enjoy:Not a surprise, really --
Please enjoy:Italian Greyhounds aren't very limber, and his strength always was synchronized skating with a partner.
Please enjoy:So, of course, he came crawling back to me."
Please enjoy:Marge didn't want to ask the obvious question,
Please enjoy:because it had an obvious answer:
Please enjoy:Lizzie had decided to skate with Gerard instead of her.
Please enjoy:She had a much better chance of winning that way.
Please enjoy:So, instead, Marge simply said,
Please enjoy:"I came to bring back my skates and costume.
Please enjoy:Figure skating isn't for me.
Please enjoy:I hope you and Gerard do really well."
Please enjoy:Now Lizzie looked stunned.
Please enjoy:She was a nice tabby,
Please enjoy:and she was probably afraid Marge would be angry with her.
Please enjoy:"No hard feelings, okay?"
Please enjoy:Marge gave the small tabby an awkward hug,
Please enjoy:put the bag with her skates and costume down on a bleacher, and then
Please enjoy:turned to get out of there as fast as she could.
Please enjoy:"NO HARD FEELINGS?"
Please enjoy:Lizzie's voice was a screeching yowl.
Please enjoy:It stopped Marge dead in her tracks.
Please enjoy:When she turned back to look at the little tabby,
Please enjoy:Lizzie's ears were flat
Please enjoy:and her eyes narrowed.
Please enjoy:"I've put months of work into training you,
Please enjoy:and now you're just giving up?"
Please enjoy:There is no fury like a tabby scorned.
Please enjoy:"If Gerard can't make it skating alone,
Please enjoy:what chance would I have?"
Please enjoy:Marge asked. Though it didn't matter --
Please enjoy:she wouldn't want to skate alone, even if she were good enough.
Please enjoy:She might love skating, but she didn't care enough to compete without a team.
Please enjoy:She'd always been a team player.
Please enjoy:"I only made it this far because of you."
Please enjoy:"What do you want me to do?
Please enjoy:Go back to skating with Gerard?"
Please enjoy:Lizzie spat his name through her whiskers like a curse word.
Please enjoy:"No... But..." Of course Marge didn't want Lizzie to go back to skating with Gerard.
Please enjoy:Was this a trick question?
Please enjoy:Was she supposed to reassure Lizzie that it was okay to dump her for an ex-partner?
Please enjoy:"Look, I'm not trying to get in your way."
Please enjoy:"What are you talking about?" Lizzie's
Please enjoy:ears were still flat.
Please enjoy:Marge wished she could find a way to make them stand back up again.
Please enjoy:It hurt Marge's ego to say it out loud, but it seemed like Lizzie needed to hear it:
Please enjoy:"I understand why you'd rather skate with Gerard than me."
Please enjoy:Lizzie's ears stood back up.
Please enjoy:Her eyes closed. She took a deep breath.
Please enjoy:"I see. You think I'm taking Gerard back, just because he crawled back to me."
Please enjoy:Marge's spirits lifted a little.
Please enjoy:Maybe she had misunderstood.
Please enjoy:"Aren't you?" "No." Marge's jowls broke into a grin.
Please enjoy:"Really?" "Well, I wasn't."
Please enjoy:"What do you mean?"
Please enjoy:Lizzie skated away.
Please enjoy:She did that when she was angry.
Please enjoy:When she reached the far side of the rink, she began doing toe jumps,
Please enjoy:one after another. A sequence of six, ending on a spin.
Please enjoy:That was a bad sign.
Please enjoy:She was very angry.
Please enjoy:Marge started putting her skates on, but Lizzie came back before they were all laced up.
Please enjoy:"Don't bother," she said.
Please enjoy:"I can't have a partner who's ready to quit on me at a moment's notice.
Please enjoy:So take your skates,
Please enjoy:and go home to your puppies."
Please enjoy:Marge wanted to argue, but she couldn't think.
Please enjoy:She could only feel.
Please enjoy:Her eyes filled with tears,
Please enjoy:clouding the image of Lizzie skating away with her striped tail swishing. #
Please enjoy:If it had been up to Marge, figure skating would never have been mentioned in her house again.
Please enjoy:She was mortified by her own behavior --
Please enjoy:she hadn't trusted her teammate,
Please enjoy:and that had ruined everything.
Please enjoy:But when you have five puppies,
Please enjoy:very little is under control.
Please enjoy:The very next day when she picked them up at school,
Please enjoy:Tim barreled into the car brandishing a data-chip.
Please enjoy:"My teacher found a video of yellow swallowtails doing a mating dance!
Please enjoy:You have to see it, Mom!"
Please enjoy:"A mating dance?" Kiki said, shoving past Tim to get to her preferred seat.
Please enjoy:"Eww." "No," Tim barked. "It's beautiful. They're butterflies, fluttering around."
Please enjoy:The rest of the puppies shoved their way into the back seats
Please enjoy:and started strapping in.
Please enjoy:Junior said, "Tim showed it to me at lunch.
Please enjoy:It's kind of like the butterflies are figure skating in the sky."
Please enjoy:Marge drew a deep breath, hoping the conversation would drift right past the words "figure skating.
Please enjoy:skating." Surely, Jo Jo and Kiki had stories to tell about their pretend games at recess,
Please enjoy:playing at being ninjas with their friend Allison.
Please enjoy:Marge loved that her giant puppies pretended they were stealthy, invisible ninjas.
Please enjoy:Though, she supposed,
Please enjoy:they did have the dark fur for disappearing into the shadows at night.
Please enjoy:But there were no ninja exploits today.
Please enjoy:"Mom -- you and Lizzie should have costumes that make you look like butterflies," Jo Jo said.
Please enjoy:"Yellow swallowtails,"
Please enjoy:Tim added. "Those are the best."
Please enjoy:The puppies began debating whether the long tails on a swallowtail's wings would be dangerous while figure skating.
Please enjoy:To stop them, Marge said,
Please enjoy:"We already have costumes.
Please enjoy:costumes." She knew it was the wrong thing as soon as she said it.
Please enjoy:"Can we see them?" "What do they look like?" "But I wanted to help pick them!"
Please enjoy:Marge roared, "BE QUIET.
Please enjoy:QUIET." Amazingly, the puppies quieted.
Please enjoy:Marge pulled the car away from the school
Please enjoy:and said, "I need to focus on driving. Don't bother me.
Please enjoy:me." Fortunately, she'd trained her puppies early that safety while driving
Please enjoy:was of paramount importance. So, they stayed quiet.
Please enjoy:At least, until they realized that she was driving them home
Please enjoy:instead of to the skating rink.
Please enjoy:"Don't you have practice?"
Please enjoy:Fred asked. "'Course not," Jo Jo said.
Please enjoy:"The single skaters competition is this week.
Please enjoy:Duh." "It doesn't matter," Marge said.
Please enjoy:She didn't know if her next statement would be met with silence or an uproar.
Please enjoy:She wasn't sure which would hurt her more.
Please enjoy:"I'm... done figure skating."
Please enjoy:Who was she kidding?
Please enjoy:Given a choice between silence and an uproar, five puppies will always choose an uproar.
Please enjoy:Fred berated her for having wasted all their time at the ice rink during her practices;
Please enjoy:Jo Jo called her a quitter; and Kiki bemoaned the fact that she'd been looking forward
Please enjoy:to going out for ice cream to celebrate after the big competition.
Please enjoy:"I was going to get a double scoop of peanut butter bacon ripple!"
Please enjoy:Tim just grumbled.
Please enjoy:But Junior asked,
Please enjoy:"Why?" Marge didn't know how to deal with all of their noise and complaints, but one
Please enjoy:objection was easy to fix.
Please enjoy:Instead of taking them home,
Please enjoy:Marge drove past their house and took them to the nearest ice cream shop.
Please enjoy:"We don't need a big competition to get ice cream,"
Please enjoy:she said. That mollified most of her puppies.
Please enjoy:Four of them were too busy picking out ice cream cones,
Please enjoy:flavors, and toppings to bother her.
Please enjoy:But Junior still wanted to know why.
Please enjoy:So, when they all sat down with their ice creams,
Please enjoy:Marge tried to explain.
Please enjoy:"Lizzie's mad at me."
Please enjoy:"Did you do something stupid?"
Please enjoy:Fred asked helpfully.
Please enjoy:At least, he looked like he thought he was being helpful.
Please enjoy:He also had ice cream on his nose.
Please enjoy:Somehow, that made it harder for Marge to be annoyed with him.
Please enjoy:"Yes, I did something stupid.
Please enjoy:I told her I was going to quit, even though I didn't want to quit.
Please enjoy:Now she thinks that she can't trust me.
Please enjoy:So, she's going to skate with her old partner Gerard."
Please enjoy:"That skinny dog?" Jo Jo said around a mouthful of ice cream. "Ugh.
Please enjoy:He's the worst." "You should beat him up," Fred offered.
Please enjoy:"Then he couldn't skate, and Lizzie would have to skate with you again."
Please enjoy:"That's not a good idea," Marge said in a measured voice.
Please enjoy:"And I think we should have a talk about appropriate behavior--"
Please enjoy:"Then you should skate with Gerard!"
Please enjoy:Kiki interrupted. "If Lizzie won't skate with you, then you should steal her replacement partner. It would serve her right.
Please enjoy:right." Kiki looked at her empty bowl of ice cream mournfully.
Please enjoy:"Can I get another scoop?"
Please enjoy:"Why don't you just skate alone?" Junior
Please enjoy:asked. Marge opened her muzzle to explain that she wasn't any good at figure skating alone.
Please enjoy:She couldn't do toe jumps.
Please enjoy:All she could do alone was spins.
Please enjoy:As a big dog, she was only built for pair skating --
Please enjoy:none of the smaller skaters could compare with her at throwing a partner high into the air.
Please enjoy:Skating with Lizzie
Please enjoy:was what made her good.
Please enjoy:But Junior was looking at her so adoringly.
Please enjoy:She couldn't tell him that his mama was a terrible skater.
Please enjoy:"I don't want to skate alone,"
Please enjoy:Marge said. Still, Junior's suggestion gave Marge an idea.
Please enjoy:If Lizzie wanted proof that Marge wouldn't quit,
Please enjoy:what better proof was there than signing up for the single skaters competition? If there was
Please enjoy:still time... Today was the last day of the single skaters competition. Marge was
Please enjoy:pretty sure they allowed signups any time before the competition ended,
Please enjoy:but she didn't have a routine or a costume.
Please enjoy:No, that didn't matter.
Please enjoy:Marge didn't need to be good.
Please enjoy:She only needed to prove to Lizzie
Please enjoy:that she was determined
Please enjoy:to skate. "Come on, pups,
Please enjoy:finish your ice cream.
Please enjoy:We're going to the ice rink after all."
Please enjoy:"I thought it was just the single skaters competing today." Jo Jo took a painfully slow lick of her ice cream cone.
Please enjoy:"Wait-- Are you going to compete?
Please enjoy:As a single skater?
Please enjoy:No way!" "What music will you skate to?" Tim asked.
Please enjoy:Marge hadn't thought about that.
Please enjoy:"I guess, something that we have on a data-chip in the car."
Please enjoy:"I'll pick something.
Please enjoy:something." Jo Jo sounded confident.
Please enjoy:"Don't worry about that.
Please enjoy:What will you wear?"
Please enjoy:Marge considered using the jersey costume,
Please enjoy:but she didn't think it would look right without Lizzie's costume to complement it.
Please enjoy:"My plain black leotard, I guess.
Please enjoy:guess." That would at least look traditional.
Please enjoy:While the pups finished their ice cream and cleaned up,
Please enjoy:Marge tried several times to call Lizzie.
Please enjoy:She wasn't answering,
Please enjoy:so Marge called the ice rink and got herself patched through to the registrar for the competition.
Please enjoy:They could fit her into the schedule,
Please enjoy:but only barely. She'd be skating in less than an hour.
Please enjoy:Marge called Lizzie back and left a message,
Please enjoy:telling her the time of her performance
Please enjoy:and pleading with her to come see it:
Please enjoy:"You know I can't skate without you,
Please enjoy:but if you won't skate with me,
Please enjoy:I have no choice.
Please enjoy:I'm going to make a fool of myself for you.
Please enjoy:So, please, come watch me make a fool of myself."
Please enjoy:When Marge hung up,
Please enjoy:she realized that all five of her big puppies were staring at her.
Please enjoy:"Nice way to keep your dignity, Mom,"
Please enjoy:Fred said. The others laughed.
Please enjoy:"Shut up and get in the car.
Please enjoy:car." Marge herded her puppies out of the ice cream shop. #
Please enjoy:The bleachers were more crowded than usual,
Please enjoy:but Marge found a spot to set up her puppies with their snacks and games that she always kept in the car, just in case.
Please enjoy:Then she changed into her leotard and skates,
Please enjoy:handed over the data-chip with the music that Jo Jo had picked to the Siamese cat managing the performers,
Please enjoy:and nervously waited her turn.
Please enjoy:She recognized some of the other competitors from the open practices.
Please enjoy:A Pomeranian whose fluffy orange fur overflowed her yellow sequined leotard skated to a piece of classical music
Please enjoy:called "The Rising of the Sun.
Please enjoy:Sun." The music was heavy on flutes,
Please enjoy:and the Pomeranian kept raising her arms as if she were greeting the dawn.
Please enjoy:Then a squirrel in a red sequined leotard -- which Marge
Please enjoy:recognized from her first day figure skating --
Please enjoy:skated to a frenetic piece of violin music.
Please enjoy:Her small size let her jump and flip higher than any of the dogs or cats,
Please enjoy:and she danced with her tail
Please enjoy:like it was a decorative scarf.
Please enjoy:Both the Pomeranian and the squirrel skated
Please enjoy:flawlessly; they both got less than perfect scores from the judges.
Please enjoy:Marge was starting to feel dizzy from nerves.
Please enjoy:She didn't belong here.
Please enjoy:She couldn't do this.
Please enjoy:The final competitor before Marge was an otter
Please enjoy:in a shimmery blue leotard
Please enjoy:decorated with teal swirls.
Please enjoy:He skated to orchestral music that sounded like oceans and rivers
Please enjoy:and waterfalls turned into harp, violin,
Please enjoy:and piano. His long spine bent as he spun,
Please enjoy:and he moved as fluidly as water.
Please enjoy:He couldn't jump as high as the squirrel,
Please enjoy:but his body bent in half.
Please enjoy:He leaned so far backwards
Please enjoy:that his forepaws brushed the ice,
Please enjoy:forming his body into a loop as he spun.
Please enjoy:Then he leaned back forward
Please enjoy:and waved his tail like a rudder behind him,
Please enjoy:as if he was actually swimming along the ice.
Please enjoy:He got a perfect score.
Please enjoy:The announcer introduced Marge over the loudspeaker,
Please enjoy:and the Siamese cat told her, "You're on.
Please enjoy:Get out there." Marge started shaking her head
Please enjoy:and backing away.
Please enjoy:Then she heard a cry from the bleachers,
Please enjoy:"MOM!" She looked over to her puppies and saw them jumping up and down,
Please enjoy:pointing at a little tabby cat in their midst.
Please enjoy:Lizzie had come. Marge could do this.
Please enjoy:She had no choice. She had to do this.
Please enjoy:For her partner.
Please enjoy:Her teammate. Like always,
Please enjoy:when Marge's skate hit the ice,
Please enjoy:her broad shoulders
Please enjoy:relaxed. She felt her back loosen.
Please enjoy:Her tail wagged. Then the twangy chords of "Country Cat, City Cat"
Please enjoy:came over the sound system.
Please enjoy:It wasn't what Marge would have picked,
Please enjoy:but Garth McWhiskers, the orange tabby from Alabama,
Please enjoy:was Jo Jo's favorite singer.
Please enjoy:And Jo Jo had picked.
Please enjoy:Marge kicked off
Please enjoy:and skated up to her top speed.
Please enjoy:She zoomed around the rink
Please enjoy:as Garth drawled the refrain,
Please enjoy:"It's hard to be a country cat!"
Please enjoy:She spun in one direction,
Please enjoy:then the other. She didn't know what else to do, so she kept on skating into spins.
Please enjoy:She raised her arms like she remembered the Pomeranian doing as Garth sang, "City cats got it made!"
Please enjoy:When Garth started yodeling,
Please enjoy:Marge decided she had nothing to lose
Please enjoy:and threw her whole weight
Please enjoy:into a toe jump. The ice rink
Please enjoy:and time stood still
Please enjoy:as Marge was in the air --
Please enjoy:her skates left the ground,
Please enjoy:and she made it through a half-rotation before wobbling her way into a clumsy landing.
Please enjoy:But she didn't fall.
Please enjoy:And that felt like flying.
Please enjoy:Finally, the twangy guitars faded out,
Please enjoy:and Marge slowed to a stop.
Please enjoy:She bowed. Although,
Please enjoy:she wasn't sure if she was supposed
Please enjoy:to. Then she got herself off the ice
Please enjoy:and did everything she could to ignore the dismal scores being announced over the loudspeaker.
Please enjoy:The scores didn't matter.
Please enjoy:The only judge who mattered
Please enjoy:was Lizzie. "Oh my god, Mom. You were hilarious,"
Please enjoy:Kiki said when Marge finally made it through the crowd to her puppies.
Please enjoy:"I knew it would be funny if you skated to "Country Cat, City Cat"!"
Please enjoy:Jo Jo looked thrilled with herself,
Please enjoy:like she'd played a very clever prank.
Please enjoy:Marge would have to have a talk with her later.
Please enjoy:"I thought you were great,"
Please enjoy:Junior said. "Better than any of the others.
Please enjoy:Except maybe the otter."
Please enjoy:"The otter was really good,"
Please enjoy:Tim agreed. Marge looked past all of her puppies and spoke directly to the little tabby cat behind them,
Please enjoy:"I feel like an idiot.
Please enjoy:But I didn't quit."
Please enjoy:"You are an idiot,"
Please enjoy:Lizzie said, but her ears didn't flatten.
Please enjoy:Marge loved that her ears didn't flatten.
Please enjoy:"I won't quit. But I'd rather skate with you."
Please enjoy:"You may be an idiot,"
Please enjoy:Lizzie purred. "But you're also my partner.
Please enjoy:partner." She held out her striped paw,
Please enjoy:and Marge eagerly shook it
Please enjoy:with her big shaggy black paw.
Please enjoy:"But let's stick to my choreography next time." -----
