Who better to talk Kona than 3x IRONMAN World Champion Mirinda Carfrae?
This week, the crew welcomes Rinny back to the mic to catch us up on first ultra-marathon and the shift from pro racing to what keeps her motivated now — with some tips for co-host Katie Zaferes on navigating the post-retirement, post-partum workouts.
The team also discusses the big races of the past weekend: WTCS Weihai — Beth Potter and Cassandre Beaugrand are tied (!) going into the final — and the wild XTERRA World Champs.
But let’s be real — the big focus this week? The last all-women’s IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, going down Saturday, October 11.
We break down a field that’s absolutely stacked — from short-course phenoms like Solveig Løvseth and Julie Derron, to seasoned pros like Kat Matthews, Taylor Knibb, and Holly Lawrence. Oh, and don’t forget the three former world champs in the mix: Laura Philipp, Lucy Charles-Barclay, and Chelsea Sodaro. And rising stars like Marjolaine Pierre are also coming in hot.
We get into:
There's so much to discuss and Feisty Triathlon will be on the ground in Kona, dropping daily pods starting Monday, Oct. 6. And if you’re on the Big Island — come say hey to the Feisty crew IRL!

All right.
Speaker B:Welcome, Feisties.
Speaker B:We have Joanne, we have Katie.
Speaker B:I'm Kelly.
Speaker B:And this week, Marinda Carfrae is back with us.
Speaker B:Welcome, Rinni.
Speaker A:Thanks, guys.
Speaker A:Good to be back.
Speaker B:I.
Speaker B:We said we haven't seen you since the first episode.
Speaker B:You know, update us on your life.
Speaker B:What's changed in three months?
Speaker A:Yeah, not a whole lot.
Speaker A:I mean, summer holidays with the kids, we did some camping.
Speaker A:Isabelle did swim team for the first time, which I had no idea what that.
Speaker A:That whole world was like, which was kind of eye openening.
Speaker A:Like it's a.
Speaker A:Basically every weekend for every once one day a weekend for like eight weeks.
Speaker A:But she loved it, which was cool.
Speaker A:And I definitely am going to make her be a swimmer because I did not do swimming, which was a big mistake of my childhood.
Speaker A:And what else?
Speaker A:Kids are back at school.
Speaker A:Jameson's going to be two in December.
Speaker A:Um, Isabel just turned eight in August.
Speaker A:Um, yeah, I ran the grand reverse.
Speaker A:I guess that's one thing that I did which was kind of cool.
Speaker A:Which was very cool.
Speaker A:It's like a 40 mile run from Crested Butte to Aspen with like over 7,000ft of elevation.
Speaker A:It's insanely beautiful.
Speaker A:I've never done a trail race.
Speaker A:I've never done a race at altitude.
Speaker A:I've never done over a marathon in a triathlon.
Speaker A:So seemed like a good idea.
Speaker A:And I actually loved it.
Speaker A:I had no expectations and I trained sort of for it, but it was, it was beautiful.
Speaker A:And I have to say I loved it until about five and a half hours in or maybe like 45k and I still had 20, 20k to go.
Speaker A:And then I was kind of over it.
Speaker A:The last like five miles was straight, like down like the ski run into Aspen, which sucked because the quads were at that point not so happy with me.
Speaker A:Um, but that was cool.
Speaker A:And now I'm looking for like, what's next?
Speaker A:I want to try and do some.
Speaker A:I'd like to do another ultra, maybe just like 50k instead of like the 65k next year.
Speaker C:Do you coach yourself for that?
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Or.
Speaker A:Yes, I did.
Speaker C:Do you like it?
Speaker A:I think.
Speaker A:Well, I did.
Speaker A:I mean, I think if I was to get more serious, I would want to coach.
Speaker A:And I actually at some point would like to try and run a fast.
Speaker A:Some fast marathons.
Speaker A:And I keep saying, like, when all the kids are in school, but I don't know that life will settle down until we're like 20.
Speaker A:So I was like, maybe when I'm 50, I'll go and do like all the world Majors.
Speaker A:But I'm like, maybe I should just, like, I don't know, get back in shape and do it now.
Speaker B:Just do it now.
Speaker A:I'm gonna just get slower.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:So.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:So that's where I'm at.
Speaker A:Realizing that I need to have races on my calendar to actually train.
Speaker B:I was about to ask, because I know Katie's been, like, toying with this.
Speaker B:Like, what do I.
Speaker B:What is my physical activity now?
Speaker B:With two kids post retirement?
Speaker B:I feel like you guys should compare notes, you know?
Speaker A:Yeah, we can.
Speaker C:I struggle.
Speaker C:How are your notes?
Speaker A:Well, you're still.
Speaker A:You're still really fresh off of a little.
Speaker A:A baby.
Speaker A:I. I mean, I. I'm almost two years beyond.
Speaker A:And even when after I had Izzy, I felt like it was 18 months before I felt myself.
Speaker A:So just give yourself grace.
Speaker A:Don't rush into anything.
Speaker A:But I think after maybe a year, maybe try to put a. I don't know, something on the calendar, but know that you're not gonna feel normal until, like, at least 18 months.
Speaker A:At least.
Speaker A:That was my experience for all three.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:I was telling someone.
Speaker C:I was like, it's hard because I feel like with both my pregnancies, I was coming off of my career, and so I have fit clothes and I have pregnant clothes, but I have no in between clothes.
Speaker C:So it makes me feel like right now I'm like, oh, my gosh.
Speaker C:They fit like.
Speaker C:Like, my shorts fit like their underwear.
Speaker A:Yeah, I know.
Speaker A:I had to let go of that.
Speaker A:Like, I'm not an extra small anymore.
Speaker A:I was an extra small forever.
Speaker A:And now, and I'm like, oh, yeah, I'll get back to it.
Speaker A:And I was the same, right?
Speaker A:Like, came back from Izzy, got back to professional racing.
Speaker A:Same with Finn.
Speaker A:Got back, like, was forced into shape, and then, like.
Speaker A:And it took a little while to, like, get back into shape, which is.
Speaker A:Whatever.
Speaker A:It's fine.
Speaker A:Like, your body is got hormones and everything going on.
Speaker A:But now he's almost Jameson's almost two, and I'm not an extra small anymore.
Speaker A:So they asked me to do the underwear run, and I'm like, no.
Speaker A:I'm like, no, I'm not doing that.
Speaker A:I didn't do it when I was in, like, amazing shape.
Speaker A:Like, I'm not doing it.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:I was like, in all fairness, I don't really like the underwear run that much.
Speaker B:No, it's not like, my thing anyway.
Speaker A:No, exactly.
Speaker A:But that I met because I'm there for.
Speaker A:I'm an Ironman ambassador.
Speaker A:And it was on my.
Speaker A:Like, this is something we'd like, you to shop for.
Speaker A:For Iron man donation.
Speaker A:I'm like, I would like to not please do that.
Speaker A:And they're like, okay, it's optional.
Speaker C:I'd like to show up in long underwear.
Speaker D:You could probably just wear a tutu and a little cropped.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker D:Look fabulous, you know?
Speaker A:But it is.
Speaker A:It is that.
Speaker A:It is an adjustment.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:Like, your whole life, you, like, ate whatever you wanted.
Speaker A:Like, you were.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:And again, like, I still kind of eat whatever I want.
Speaker A:I refuse to not eat what I want.
Speaker A:But I, like, I'm not what I was anymore.
Speaker A:Which is fine.
Speaker B:Which is fine.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:We should compare notes then, because that's how.
Speaker C:Exactly how I feel.
Speaker C:Like, I'm not giving anything up.
Speaker C:I'm just not exercising as much.
Speaker B:I feel like, Katie, we just need.
Speaker B:Like, this is not.
Speaker B:Not because of, like, clothes or whatever.
Speaker B:Just because you've been, like, what should I do?
Speaker B:We just got to, like, sign you up for something crazy like the Grand Traverse or Iron Man.
Speaker B:Yeah, we need to sign Katie up for an Ironman.
Speaker A:Well, that's good.
Speaker A:Grand reverse.
Speaker A:God.
Speaker A:Go, Katie.
Speaker C:Oh, I was just gonna say, I have my first race that I. I think I'm going to do with my nephew, who is 10, and he runs.
Speaker C:He just got his best time.
Speaker C: He ran a: Speaker C:So that is my A race at this point.
Speaker A:Yeah, but it's not scary enough.
Speaker B:Like, you're like, all right.
Speaker A:Like, come on, you could do that.
Speaker A:You're fine.
Speaker A:You're run off the couch.
Speaker A:So that's why I signed up for the grand reverse.
Speaker D:Rinni has just taken over as Katie's coach, and, like, yeah, yeah.
Speaker A:You'Re in.
Speaker D:Call here really is, like, that is not scary enough.
Speaker C:But it is, because every time I run, like, I ran yesterday, and at the end of my run, I'm thinking, I really need a coach because, like, I, like, it's just so hard to get, like, not follow something for me.
Speaker A:All right.
Speaker A:We fly around a program every Sunday.
Speaker A:Like, I'm like, okay, this week, this is what my.
Speaker A:This is my plan.
Speaker A:And then if I have it written down, I'll do it.
Speaker A:Like, if you wake up in the morning, you're like, should I do something?
Speaker A:If it's not written down, you won't do it.
Speaker B:We've solved this.
Speaker D:Sorry?
Speaker B:Oh, I was just saying we've solved this.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:Like, Rinni's gonna write Katie A plan.
Speaker B:She's gonna join Salty Bears.
Speaker B:She's gonna sign up for something scary.
Speaker C:Just copy and paste.
Speaker A:I'll just share what I'm doing every week, and then you can do the same.
Speaker D:Would you love me?
Speaker D:On the days where you don't want to run, I know you've got it written down and, like, you obviously have the motivation to do it, but when there's days where you're just like, oh, I just want to, like, I'm sleeping in.
Speaker D:I'm not doing this because you don't have a coach who's telling you you have to do this.
Speaker D:Like, how do you say stay self motivated?
Speaker A:You need an event that's scary enough.
Speaker A:Like, that is the answer.
Speaker A:Like, I want to.
Speaker A:I want to.
Speaker A:Well, in my, my.
Speaker A:I mean, I.
Speaker A:My goal was to, like, not have it suck the whole way.
Speaker A:Like, it's eight hours, so I wanted to enjoy.
Speaker A:Be able to enjoy some of it.
Speaker A:So that was my whole motivation for this, for this race.
Speaker A:And, yeah, I think if it's scary enough.
Speaker A:But again, I think if.
Speaker A:If you have a program, I don't know, I feel like you're probably wired the same way, Katie.
Speaker A:Like, it gets done.
Speaker A:Like, I don't care how I feel it's going to get done.
Speaker A:Like, I'll feel better at the end of the day.
Speaker A:I know.
Speaker A:And obviously there's warning signs, like, if something hurts, like, or if you're legit, like, got to get sick or something, then you know, to pull back.
Speaker A:But if there's no reason other than I'm a bit tired, then it gets done.
Speaker D:I just can't be bothered.
Speaker B:No, Joan, that's not a thing.
Speaker B:No, they're not a thing.
Speaker B:The world champions on the call are not following what you're saying.
Speaker D:Come on, be normal.
Speaker D:I want to hear what us normal people have to go through.
Speaker C:Well, I would say I need a buddy.
Speaker C:I. I'm the buddy.
Speaker A:Does that buddy.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker D:Well, Katie, I got up this morning in the depths of.
Speaker D:Of the cold, wet and wild this morning in Ireland for my final run before Kona because hashtag fit not skinny.
Speaker D:Fit for Kona is our hashtag.
Speaker D:So I did my last cramming session to be able to run on Ali' I drive.
Speaker D:So I doubt I ran a 6 1/2 K in the rain and the wind and the wild weather in Ireland today.
Speaker D:Can't wait for the heat of Hawaii.
Speaker C:So I just need a combination of Joanne's program and Rinny's program.
Speaker C:Kelly, what are you going to give Me?
Speaker B:Yeah, I was like, not Kelly's program.
Speaker B:Nope.
Speaker A:All right.
Speaker B:We actually r. Is actually joining us not to give Katie advice, believe it.
Speaker A:Or not, stole the show.
Speaker B:Riddy is joining us today because we are going to preview pre race week preview Kona.
Speaker B:But first we wanted to talk about the races this past weekend before we jump ahead because there was still some pretty big race.
Speaker B:It's like, it's hard to really focus because there's just so many big races.
Speaker B:The last World Triathlon Championship series before for the grand final in Wollong and Katie.
Speaker B:So Beth Potter is leading like after that win.
Speaker B:She's leading now.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker B:Going into Australia.
Speaker C:Yeah, I'm.
Speaker C:I'm.
Speaker C:Yeah, pretty sure I'm going with you on that one.
Speaker B:You're going with me.
Speaker C:But no, it was an interesting race because it was the last one before, but it wasn't as prescribed as like the rest of the series has been.
Speaker C:But we had one of the US Women who raised her first.
Speaker C:First WTCS race because of that, which was a good opportunity for her.
Speaker C:But yeah, I think it was.
Speaker C:It was kind of.
Speaker C:To me, it was interesting that not more.
Speaker C:More people didn't do it because it's actually, when it looks for like going to Wollongong, it's actually one of the easiest travel wise.
Speaker B:Oh, you're saying if they just went from there to Wollongong, it would make.
Speaker C:Yeah, like it makes sense because that's actually the best time to go between like Asia and Australia.
Speaker B:But so if it was a pretty small field.
Speaker B:I'm trying to think of this.
Speaker B:Do you think it was still like, did it play out the same way?
Speaker B:Was it softer?
Speaker B:Because it didn't.
Speaker B:I mean, the top were still the top.
Speaker A:It looked like this.
Speaker C:The top still this top.
Speaker C:But I think it does play to.
Speaker C:It plays a different race dynamic just because like it was like 10 people missing, which is a lot in like the top 20 athletes.
Speaker A:Sure.
Speaker B:Like.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:But I mean, it's still a WTCS race.
Speaker C:It's still like a really good opportunity to race at that level.
Speaker C:So I don't like.
Speaker C:I think it wasn't as competitive as a race as we've seen, but it's still like something to be said for athletes who perform there.
Speaker B:And going into Wolligong now, it's kind of like Beth and Cassandra are pretty closely tied, I think.
Speaker B:I mean, they're not tied because Beth is leading, but they're pretty close for the title.
Speaker B:Do you have a favorite yet?
Speaker B:I know I promised you we were going to preview after Kona while Agon, but do you have a favorite?
Speaker B:Oh, that's.
Speaker C:That's, like, really putting me on the spot here, you know?
Speaker C:Like, I think, no, I don't have a favorite.
Speaker C:I think it's been really cool to see Beth find traction this second half of the year, when the first part of the year, like, it was like, ooh.
Speaker C:Like, she doesn't seem to be, like, racing, like, herself for those first races.
Speaker C:So it's more exciting to me now because I felt like Cassandra was.
Speaker C:Well, I mean, Cassandra kind of struggle.
Speaker C:Had her races, too, where she struggled.
Speaker C:So they're both really at form going into Wollongong, so I think it'll be.
Speaker A:A good battle because I felt like.
Speaker C:Best run, she wasn't running as well.
Speaker C:And now, like, coming off Carla Vivari, like, I mean, she's outrunning people by, like, minutes, but they haven't.
Speaker C:Like, Cassandra wasn't, like, head to head with her in the run portion.
Speaker B:Interesting.
Speaker B:It also sounds like Wigong is going to be pretty massive.
Speaker B:Like, Nam was telling us.
Speaker B:It's like age group races, juniors races, elite races every time.
Speaker B:And I don't know.
Speaker B:I mean, I'm sure Katie and Rennie both have a better idea of this, but it's an area that's, like, very into triathlon, right?
Speaker D:Yeah.
Speaker A:I mean, I'm not from down there, but there's a lot of races.
Speaker A:They have races every year down there.
Speaker A:And, I mean, a lot of great athletes have come from that area.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Oh, we.
Speaker C:Can I make a correction for us?
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker C:Cassandra and Beth are tied.
Speaker D:I did wonder.
Speaker D:I did hear that during the week.
Speaker D:I thought, yeah, they are.
Speaker C:So they are first, and I feel like.
Speaker C:So we don't have to tell you.
Speaker B:A correction next week.
Speaker A:Good, Good.
Speaker B:Why did I think that Beth would take the lead if she won?
Speaker B:That was my understanding going in.
Speaker B:Maybe that was, like, a miscalculation.
Speaker D:Interesting.
Speaker D:You know what happens when we manifest?
Speaker D:I mean, we are the worst.
Speaker C:But it's always interesting to see how people.
Speaker C:Because the grand final moves so much because it's extra, extra points.
Speaker C:Sorry.
Speaker C:I'm going back to the World Triathlon Championship Series where, like, yeah, you.
Speaker C:I mean, obviously, when you're tied, it's not gonna.
Speaker C:Whoever wins is gonna.
Speaker C:Sure, whoever comes out on top is gonna win.
Speaker C:But for the other athletes that are in the rankings, like, it can have a really substantial effect on their finish overall in the series.
Speaker B:Is it hard to follow?
Speaker B:Like, do you guys do the math before you go into the race?
Speaker C:I Only did it when I had a chance of being world champion.
Speaker C:And that was because other than that, it was, like, for one year, I remember I just had to beat Vicki, and Vicki.
Speaker C:And Vicki beat me.
Speaker C:Vicki Holland.
Speaker C: And then, like, for the: Speaker C:I wanted to know what was the lowest I could finish going into it.
Speaker C:And it was like, 14th or something.
Speaker C:So.
Speaker C:Yeah, that's when I pay attention.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:I picture everybody, like, out there doing, like, with their calculators, like, mid race.
Speaker B:But, no, I always felt like it.
Speaker C:Was more the support crew that knew.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:More than the athletes.
Speaker A:Oh, really?
Speaker B:That makes sense.
Speaker C:But, yeah, it's gonna be a big, big week for everybody.
Speaker C:Like, all the pair races.
Speaker B:All.
Speaker C:Yeah, just.
Speaker C:And I think Australia always seemed to me like.
Speaker C:Yeah, they're.
Speaker C:They're very much into just sport in general.
Speaker C:And I'm surprised all the races aren't at 5am it's like rush hour.
Speaker B:Like rush hour.
Speaker D:Yeah.
Speaker A:Yeah, it is.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:It is gonna be pretty big.
Speaker B:And it'll be the week right after Kona.
Speaker B:So we.
Speaker B:It's like we keep saying, like, there's, like, one big race after another now.
Speaker B:It's just.
Speaker B:It's crazy.
Speaker B:Um, the other one this past weekend was the exterior world Championships, and I do want to give a shout out to Luan Duvas.
Speaker B:I feel like I've said that terribly.
Speaker B:Does anybody have a better Swiss accent?
Speaker B:Du.
Speaker A:My.
Speaker B:Definitely.
Speaker C:We're looking at you.
Speaker B:Thank you.
Speaker D:How I read it could be wrong.
Speaker D:It's probably completely wrong.
Speaker B:No, I thought that.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:So she won her first world title, though, and it was crazy mud, if you haven't seen it.
Speaker B:Like, you have to go and look up the videos because the mud was so thick, Athletes were just sliding in their bikes, like, down the hill, like, on their sides.
Speaker B:So shout out to her.
Speaker B:And Barbara Vieiro's got.
Speaker B:Selena was second, who was world champion a couple times, and Barbara Virus got third, which is impressive.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:So just keeps reinventing herself, Bob.
Speaker A:She's.
Speaker A:She came into Iron man, and she didn't make us.
Speaker A:She did over the 70.3 distance, but not at the world champ level.
Speaker A:And then she didn't really cross over to Iron man, so cool to see her still bopping around and racing really well.
Speaker B:Yeah, So I thought that was really cool.
Speaker B:Um, but then the big thing now is when this airs on Friday, it.
Speaker B:When you guys are listening to it, it'll be right before Kona race week starts.
Speaker B:I will be in Kona Joanne will be in Kona.
Speaker B:Rinny will be finally packing to fly out.
Speaker B:So we did want to do kind of a pre race preview deep dive.
Speaker B:Here's my question.
Speaker B:What are you guys most looking forward to to get us started?
Speaker B:Like, what are you most excited about for this all Women's Ironman World Championship.
Speaker D:Getting to the Big Island?
Speaker B:You're just like an island person.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker C:All the new names on it, and especially, like, the World Triathlon, like Solvay and Lisa Purder.
Speaker C:I'm excited to see them race it.
Speaker A:And Julie Duran.
Speaker C:Julie, yeah, yeah, Julie Duran.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker C:And her sister, which I always.
Speaker C:I still think is cool.
Speaker D:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker D:I. I'm just excited to actually get there.
Speaker D:And the hype is so big already.
Speaker D:I mean, we saw what the hype was like for the boys race, and it absolutely delivered.
Speaker D:And the hype has just been building for this race for the last couple of weeks.
Speaker D:And I'm just excited to get there and to be part of it all, like, just to absolutely embrace it all if I can.
Speaker C:Is Kona a course where you think, like, having done it before helps you a lot or, like, is there, like, a bonus with being naive to the sensations you're going to be feeling on the course?
Speaker A:I think it.
Speaker A:Yeah, it just depends on the athlete.
Speaker A:I think it.
Speaker A:It does help, but I, like, I raced well there in my first one and then.
Speaker A:But I think I raced better in subsequent Ironmans.
Speaker A:Um, so, yeah, I think there is a little bit of ignorance as bliss, but again, I think it's just changed over the years I'm in.
Speaker A:Racing in general has changed over the years with technology advancements.
Speaker A:Like, it feels like with the rate that the athletes can take in carbs and, you know, the shoes, it's not a.
Speaker A:As grueling maybe as it once was.
Speaker B:I don't know, like, picturing.
Speaker B:I'm picturing them hearing Rinny say, oh, it's not as grueling as when I was.
Speaker A:I didn't know.
Speaker A:And that sounds so, like, I don't know.
Speaker A:It was back in my day, we had to go uphill both ways, you know, like, it totally sounds like that, but, like, the more you, like, understand like, how much, you know, like, it was a race of attrition.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:Like.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker A:You know, like, people are running on fumes in the last 10k and.
Speaker A:And now, like, the advancements of shoes and.
Speaker A:And.
Speaker A:And so now I'm like, I just don't know.
Speaker A:Like, like someone like Taylor Newb, I'm, like, very intrigued to see How Taylor races.
Speaker A:When I put my picks together, she wasn't in my top three.
Speaker A:But then she totally could win the whole thing.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:Like, it's.
Speaker A:It's so crazy to think about, like, maybe if, you know, the shoes weren't there and the nutrition wasn't there.
Speaker A:And again, like, athletes are still figuring out who they're tradition.
Speaker A:And I think Taylor, that's one big area that she's been working on because we've seen, you know, she's had some issues with nutrition and having to use the porta potty.
Speaker A:You never want to have to use a porta potty in Kona.
Speaker A:Like, that is not a good place to be on the PK in.
Speaker A:In Kona.
Speaker A:And I just wonder, yeah, if she sorted that out.
Speaker A:And then you think about someone like Lucy Charles Barclay is phenomenal in Kona.
Speaker A:Like, how do you go past her?
Speaker A:She's.
Speaker A:She's coming into form with second.
Speaker A:It's.
Speaker B:Sorry, what?
Speaker A:Just won T100 in Spain, three weeks out.
Speaker A:So clearly very fit, running very well.
Speaker A:Nobody can touch her in the swim.
Speaker A:Does she go and do what she did two years ago again, I feel like probably.
Speaker A:But then you have the new faces as Katie mentioned.
Speaker A:Julie Duran Solvig, Lisa Perdera.
Speaker A:Like, what are they going to do?
Speaker A:What sort of spanner are they going to throw in the mix?
Speaker A:So I don't know, to answer your question, I just.
Speaker A:It's such an unknown in Kona.
Speaker A:And again, like, is it going to be windy for the first time in a decade?
Speaker A:So a lot of.
Speaker A:And that's what makes it so exciting.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:Like, we're not all sitting here.
Speaker A:It's not like the Danielle Area era or the Natasha Badman era or the Chrissy Wellington era, where it's like, oh, Chrissy's gonna win or Natasha's gonna win or Daniella is gonna crush everyone again, unless something happens to them.
Speaker A:It's like, I actually don't know.
Speaker A:The Cat Matthews has been racing phenomenally well, and this year she actually is not trying to do everything.
Speaker A:She's focused on the Ironman Pro series only and Kona after getting second, like, that's a very big goal or like a focus after you get second at the World Champs, it feels like it's like everything is geared towards that.
Speaker A:But can she race on the Big Island?
Speaker A:Like, I don't know.
Speaker A:We.
Speaker A:She didn't finish last year.
Speaker A:Had, like, some weird thing go on.
Speaker A:Sorry.
Speaker A:Two years ago, last year, last Kona.
Speaker A:And so she hasn't ever even run a marathon in that course.
Speaker A:So, like a lot of unknowns with.
Speaker D:With Catherine.
Speaker D:Interesting.
Speaker D:I was looking at her results and she's only raced four races this year.
Speaker D:And last year she.
Speaker D:I'd say she had 12 or 13 races across the T100 and the Ironman races, like, so looking at her just purely on results, you go, this girl is rested.
Speaker D:Not rested, because she's not going into it.
Speaker D:Her sole focus has been Kona.
Speaker D: St. George behind Daniela in: Speaker D:So she just needs to put her race together on the Big island, really.
Speaker B:And she's been second twice at 30.3 worlds.
Speaker D:Yes.
Speaker D:Behind Taylor.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:And so I remember talking to her niece last year and she was like, I. I gotta win.
Speaker B:Like, I gotta.
Speaker B:I'm like, seconds getting old.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker D:Totally Finish line in.
Speaker D:So where were we last year?
Speaker D:We did Finland, then we did Topo.
Speaker D:There was somewhere.
Speaker D:Anyway, all she kept saying was second to Taylor again.
Speaker D:That was her line across the line.
Speaker D:Congratulations.
Speaker D:Oh, Joe, I'm a second to Taylor again, you know.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker D:You can't.
Speaker D:You can't see past Cat Matthews 110% and.
Speaker D:But she's put all her eggs into the world championship basket.
Speaker D:There is no doubt about it.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:And I think to your point, like, she's been second.
Speaker A:She's won the prime in pro series.
Speaker A:She's been so consistent.
Speaker A:She's one of the best in our sport.
Speaker A:But this kind of winning a world title, like, sort of gets you into the goat status, you know, like me, not just winning one, but she has to win one before she can then win another and then get into, you know, that realm.
Speaker A:And I think she's good enough to be one of the greats ever in our sport, but she has to get over this first hurdle to win the world title.
Speaker A:So, yeah, I mean, it is like, it's not make or break because, you know, another podium would be phenomenal.
Speaker A:And, you know, she has a number more years, however many more years she wants to race at this top level.
Speaker A:But it does feel very much like she is poised to put together a phenomenal performance.
Speaker A:So.
Speaker A:But maybe, who knows, like, maybe Taylor has something to say that maybe like, Lucy is like, see you later.
Speaker A:Like, I don't know.
Speaker D:Oh, sorry, Kelly.
Speaker D:But then to your point again, Renee, Lucy was four, four times on the podium in second place before she ever got to break the tape.
Speaker A:Yep.
Speaker D:The resilience it took for her to come back every second, every single year and finish in second and still be fueled by the fire of becoming a world champion.
Speaker B:Do you remember when she won her first world title was actually 70.3 in St. George, and it was the crazy storm and barricades were blowing over and, like, lightning was happening.
Speaker B:And she was like.
Speaker B:I remember her saying this right after.
Speaker B:She was like, they better not cancel this goddamn race because I am winning this one.
Speaker B:She was, like, in first, right?
Speaker B:Like, wanted it like that for so long.
Speaker B:But, yeah, I was definitely in the castle and to beat camp.
Speaker B:And then, like, when you said Lucy came out of Spain, she looks really sharp.
Speaker B:And now I'm like, oh, is it going to be.
Speaker A:She almost had a year off last year, right?
Speaker A:And she's very good in Kona.
Speaker A:I don't know.
Speaker A:Like, yeah.
Speaker A:And then we haven't even mentioned Laura Philip, like, that's our defending world champion, right.
Speaker A:And she's raced very well in Kona.
Speaker A:She was third, I believe, two years ago.
Speaker A:Is that correct.
Speaker D:As well?
Speaker D:She's off even in 22, as far as I can remember.
Speaker A:I just said the swim for her is going to be so important just because there's, like, the Julie Durons and the, you know, solve eggs, and I mean, solve eggs, actually.
Speaker A:Not a great swimmer, but she needs to, you know, be up in the mix off the bike, because it's just too many weapons.
Speaker B:So here's my question.
Speaker B:Do you think, obviously, we can talk some more about, like, all the individual players, but do you think it'll play out, like.
Speaker B:Like you said two years ago, Lucy just went off the front, stayed off the front.
Speaker B:And, I mean, it's not that people let her go because she biked one of the fastest bikes, but do you think this year people are going to work a lot harder and a lot more together to catch her on the bike?
Speaker B:Do you see it?
Speaker B:I don't see them letting her get away as much.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:And I don't think they let her get away two years ago.
Speaker A:It was just that she was ready and poised and, like, she was like, there is no way.
Speaker A:No one's taking this out of my desk grip.
Speaker A:Um, but everybody knows that is what happened, and they don't want that to happen again.
Speaker A:And so.
Speaker A:But also the addition of these itu, like, athletes from a couple of years back coming into Ironman, I think that fills in some gaps as well.
Speaker A:And so now it's harder for her to get away because there's just so many more players that, like, that will step up and fill in the gap and push hard on the bike and you know, and then someone like Katie, if she has a good swim, she's in the mix of those athletes.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:Now she has more people to sort of motivate her and work with her obviously legally to like limit that damage or even erase it.
Speaker C:Yeah, I feel like it's less isolated people on the race course.
Speaker C:Like when I used to think of Ironman, I used to just think, oh, like real like non draft but like very separate athletes racing.
Speaker C:Whereas now it feels like there's actually quite a few athletes at the same like, levels.
Speaker C:And I mean, we saw that even with the like, not just the Norwegians, but like the pack you had running in Nice and it would be really cool.
Speaker C:And I think it's a possibility that that would be happening in Kona with the ladies, which just makes it at least as a like, spectator, like, that really makes it exciting to like watch and be like, I don't know what's going to happen.
Speaker C:Like you said, it's like there's so many different people and to the point of like, Kona is a element hard race as well.
Speaker C:Whereas, like you, when you put that over this, this length of an iron man, it's like, who can outlast one another kind of becomes like how I think of it.
Speaker A:Yeah, well, I think I, I don't think we'll get a lot of women running off the bike together just because every year in Kona there's big groups and you've seen this in the men's race forever, but when they come back down from Harvey, everyone looks like like death and they're just blown apart.
Speaker A:Like, there's like one guy comes in, then it's two minutes later another guy, and then all of a sudden whoever one of the big athletes is losing minutes because they're just completely blown.
Speaker A:They haven't had enough nutrition or whatever.
Speaker A:So I feel like just that last 40, 50k on the bike, like things start to really shake up and that's where the packs kind of really start to blow apart.
Speaker A:And I think it'll be similar in the women's race.
Speaker A:That could be.
Speaker A:Obviously, of course you could be, could be wrong.
Speaker A:But I think the men's race evolved before the women's race and that's just what we've seen.
Speaker A:But again, the men are kind of, they race differently to the women.
Speaker A:There's a little bit more testosterone and there's a little bit more like, hey, I'm going to go and push 800 watts for five minutes.
Speaker A:And that definitely stings on the back end.
Speaker A:So maybe if the women race a little differently and smarter or more calculated, then.
Speaker A:Yeah, then maybe they do come off the background.
Speaker D:I.
Speaker B:Tell me if I'm.
Speaker B:But I felt like two years ago when we had kind of the all women and we had more women.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:The fit.
Speaker B:Having 50 or 60 women.
Speaker B:Even the women then who are like, further back on the finish line, like, they do change the dynamic earlier because.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:They're in a pack or they get.
Speaker B:Or they close the gap to Lucy on the.
Speaker B:So I thought watching it, it looked a lot more like the men's races used to play out or often play out.
Speaker B:Tell me if I'm, like, wrong in that, like, or.
Speaker B:Or was it just, you know, that was because there was also a lot more penalties when it was just the women.
Speaker A:Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker A:I feel like penalties is a big one that comes into play as well.
Speaker A:Like in Kona and now they have Race Ranger as well.
Speaker A:But, like, I feel like, I don't know, we'd watch races all year round and there'll be no penalties given out.
Speaker A:And it was kind of a draft fest everywhere.
Speaker A:And then in Kona, all of a sudden, they have the.
Speaker A:Now they have Race Ranger, but they had the cat eyes or the reflectors on the road that was 12 meters apart.
Speaker A:So it was very clear who was cheating and who wasn't cheating.
Speaker A:And the marshals are professional.
Speaker A:Like, they're like.
Speaker A:And they're not scared to give penalties.
Speaker A:So now, you know, someone gets a minute penalty, two minute penalty or whatever they are.
Speaker A:Now that throws a big.
Speaker A:And someone will.
Speaker A:Someone good will get a penalty.
Speaker A:Someone good probably won't even start the race.
Speaker A:Like, weird things happen leading into this big one.
Speaker A:And it's like a pressure cooker.
Speaker A:Like, you know, always we come into ra.
Speaker A:I hope everyone's healthy and everyone gets to the start line healthy.
Speaker A:But it's kind of weird.
Speaker A:Like, every year, someone.
Speaker A:One of the favorites, something happens to them and they're sick on race day, or they don't start or they swallow, you know, eat something bad.
Speaker A:Before the.
Speaker B:I was like, I always tell the Sevy Keenly once said this to me.
Speaker B:I was thinking about it.
Speaker B:There's 10 people who could win this race.
Speaker B:Five of them will be overcooked, injured, or won't start.
Speaker B:Three will have something bad happen.
Speaker B:So you really only have to beat two people.
Speaker B:And I was like, well, there you go.
Speaker D:But, like, look totally through that.
Speaker D:Look at the favorite race.
Speaker D:And it was completely wide open in the end.
Speaker D:Now just coming back to the point around the athletes with the Norwegians, they openly said that they were going to work together.
Speaker D:In the press conference, they said they were going to work together.
Speaker D:There was a country, three best friends working together.
Speaker D:But it was hammer down at halfway in the marathon.
Speaker D:Like it was every man for himself.
Speaker D:Like I don't think we're going to see that in the women's race.
Speaker D:No, I don't think we, we don't have that same kind of connection within the athletes in countries now there, there's a lot of them that are really good friends.
Speaker D:Especially look at the, the girls from the uk.
Speaker D:There's a lot of them hang out together, they train together, whatever.
Speaker D:And there's a great Camar.
Speaker D:But I, I couldn't see them coming out with a statement like, oh, Cat, Indy and Lucy are going to work together for example or Steph tutor book or whatever.
Speaker D:You know, they're going to.
Speaker D:It's just not going to happen because.
Speaker C:Do you do it like for long course and Ironman is it far less like I'm going to use the athletes with the similar skill set as me to create an advantage to the other athletes in the field that.
Speaker C:So that you're coming off the bike or like much further ahead.
Speaker C:Like that's not really a thing in Iron Man.
Speaker A:I think, I think a little bit, but it is, which I kind of like it still is mostly every woman for themselves.
Speaker A:Like you're like, okay, well maybe we'll be riding together and we can work together.
Speaker A:I think that the alliances almost form.
Speaker A:I mean sometimes maybe there's a little bit of talk before the race, but they mostly form in the race.
Speaker A:Like, okay, like you and me are together.
Speaker A:There's X amount of time to lead.
Speaker A:Let's like, you know, do 10 minute turns on the front and take it in turns to like try and limit this deficit.
Speaker A:And it kind of just happens in the moment.
Speaker A:It might not even be someone you really know at all.
Speaker C:I like 10 minute turns, like so.
Speaker A:Different five minute turns, seven turns.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker D:Not.
Speaker C:I was just thinking it in like my world.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:I think I'm like, I mean it doesn't.
Speaker C:Ned's taking 10 minute turns before she's taking.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker B:But no, that's funny.
Speaker B:So we talked about Lucy and Kat, I feel like are kind of two.
Speaker B:Two of the heavy favorites that everyone sort of mentioned.
Speaker B:Laura obviously is our defending champ.
Speaker B:We haven't mentioned Chelsea yet, which is funny because she is of course the other defending champ here and we heard from her last week kind of on the podcast, she's obviously had more of an up and down year.
Speaker B:But like Rini's kind of saying you never, you never know and she can run for sure.
Speaker A:And you can't count out as someone who's put it together on that.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:In that race.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:She's just always like a bit of a question mark.
Speaker A:You're like, if Chelsea's in great form, then yeah, she could win.
Speaker A:But is she in great form?
Speaker A:Is she healthy?
Speaker A:Kind of like, we don't, we don't know.
Speaker A:She's.
Speaker A:She's a little.
Speaker A:Since that win has been very up and down, she will.
Speaker B:Joanne and I were both at the finish line Indies last year after Chelsea crossed in third and I think arguably she didn't have the health to have placed third and she just destroyed herself.
Speaker B:Like I think both of us will say, like she had no idea where she was, like, what was going.
Speaker B:Like she was wrecked.
Speaker B:So she will wreck herself for sure.
Speaker B:Obviously.
Speaker B:So we'll as we have looked.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:I think that it.
Speaker A:You almost like can't even compare the two races.
Speaker A:Nice and Kona.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Like it's just such a different everything.
Speaker A:Like the.
Speaker A:Some of the big hitters didn't turn up in Nice and so you take those out and then, you know, put, you know, 8,000ft of climbing and a cool weather race and it's just not even the same thing.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:Before Nice, Laura Phillips like was like, this is like, I mean there's a lot of pros of course who are like, there's people who love Kona.
Speaker B:There's a lot of people who are like, I would like it to rotate because Kona's not my course.
Speaker B:But Laura Phillip was like, niece, I'm going to win.
Speaker B:Niece is my course.
Speaker B:So I'm curious if now she feels like she wants to prove she still can win.
Speaker B:Not Indies, you know.
Speaker D:Well, if she wins in coconut to be the only athlete to have won both world championships in nature.
Speaker B:That's true.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Marjolaine is the other, I guess we call podium kind of top five in world champs is the other podium contender from last year who is back one of the youngest athletes this year and.
Speaker A:She doesn't in a top 10.
Speaker A:A solid top 10.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:Again, she could prove me wrong and I hope she doesn't listen to this because I have a lot of respect for her.
Speaker A:But I mean this was just the perfect storm for her.
Speaker A:Like home ground, like knew the course like the back of her hand, had the race of her life on the right day.
Speaker A:I just think there's too many other women stronger with more experience.
Speaker A:And that's not to say that in five years, Marjolaine's our champ.
Speaker A:I just think she's not there yet.
Speaker B:She's also, like, 25.
Speaker B:Yeah, she's younger.
Speaker A:Totally.
Speaker B:For sure.
Speaker D:So then we move to another young athlete, Taylor.
Speaker D:Taylor is.
Speaker C:Yeah, she's such a question mark to me.
Speaker C:Not in the sense of, like, her performance, but, like, she's been.
Speaker C:So she's her normal, like, quiet self on social media.
Speaker C:So maybe Rennie has more, like, bolder background.
Speaker B:But, like.
Speaker C:Like, I was like, wow, I feel like she hasn't raced at all.
Speaker C:Or like, you just haven't seen her, which can always go both ways of, like, being very good or like, something's wrong.
Speaker A:I don't.
Speaker A:Well, from any insight that I have, I. I don't think anything's wrong.
Speaker A:I think she's targeting Kona and.
Speaker A:And she's said multiple times, this is the race she really wants.
Speaker A:She was phenomenal in it racing.
Speaker A:She was incredible in time trial bike.
Speaker A:But Kona's the one she's always been looking at and wanting to win.
Speaker A:I. I did a podcast with Mike Riley last week, and I didn't.
Speaker A:He said, who are you picks?
Speaker A:And I should know better to give, like, my top three.
Speaker A:But I gave my top three, and Taylor wasn't one of them.
Speaker A:And I guess she heard that I didn't pick her, and I guess.
Speaker A:And I guess it lit a bit of a fire under her butt.
Speaker A:But honestly, she's such a.
Speaker A:As I agree, Katie, she's a big question mark.
Speaker A:Like, she.
Speaker A:Does she have everything in her repertoire to win a world titling Conan?
Speaker A:Absolutely.
Speaker B:Definitely.
Speaker A:Will it happen this year?
Speaker A:I mean, she hasn't got the Ironman track record yet.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:Like, she's only done should we saw in Kona.
Speaker A:She raced very well, but she had some GI issues.
Speaker A:Ended up.
Speaker A:Was it fourth?
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker A:Yep.
Speaker A:And then she went and raised Texas.
Speaker A:That wasn't a very good showing.
Speaker A:Well, I mean, I think she was shocked at how well everyone else road.
Speaker A:And I think the level just keeps going up.
Speaker A:And so she didn't have the buffer that she would expect on the bike.
Speaker A:And then in the run, it seemed like she was just like, I'm just trying to validate.
Speaker A:Like, I don't feel great.
Speaker A:Like, well, that's Iron man, though.
Speaker A:Like, you don't feel great.
Speaker A:No one feels great.
Speaker A:But you just suffer through the marathon and do the best you can.
Speaker A:But she kind of was like, no, no, no, I'm not trying to win.
Speaker A:So I don't know, like she hasn't fully shown her cards.
Speaker A:I don't believe in Ironman racing yet.
Speaker A:So that's going to be a nice surprise when she is ready to show them.
Speaker D:She's got great gumption, hasn't she?
Speaker D:I don't know if gumption is the right word, but like the courage at her age to do what she does, do what she did in the itu, to do what she did in the Olympics, cycling, everything and then to just be brave enough to go, do you know what?
Speaker D:Kona is on my bucket list.
Speaker D:Kona is what I want.
Speaker D:I'm going for it.
Speaker D: mance that she did in Kona in: Speaker D:It always is world championship.
Speaker D:But the.
Speaker D:I don't know if gumption is the right word.
Speaker D:I don't want to use courage because it's not courage, but it's like.
Speaker B:I think the word you're looking for is feisty.
Speaker D:Where it's just like if you could bottle the feistiness that Taylor has and you could sell it, then I think we'd be all millionaires.
Speaker D:And Taylor, if you're listening, good luck on race day.
Speaker B:She is also one of the like to your point of like this is her dream.
Speaker B:She is one of the people who like saw it as a kid.
Speaker B:Her mom raced it.
Speaker B:Like she, you know, like there are the people who have seen this their whole lives and they like Rudy, right?
Speaker B:Like her mom.
Speaker D:Yeah, her mom raced it in 23 as well.
Speaker D:Like from what I recall.
Speaker D:I don't think your mom finished the race, but she raced as well in 23, you know, so like there's that bigger connection, that connection beyond the island, beyond the sport, that bond with her mom, which not a lot of athletes we get.
Speaker B:No, no.
Speaker A:But I will say, I will say as well, we almost can't Even compare Taylor 2 years ago, Kona to Taylor now, right?
Speaker A:Like Kona was like, I'm gonna go do it.
Speaker A:She was worried that it wasn't like Kona was gonna go away.
Speaker A:And she's like, I've refused my chance to go on race.
Speaker A:I'm like, it's not going away.
Speaker B:Like, no, no, it was not.
Speaker B:No one was.
Speaker A:I don't know.
Speaker B:But she, she said that like at the press conference.
Speaker B:And even the Ironman staff is like looking around being like, what is she?
Speaker B:It's not going away.
Speaker A:Like what is Dear you're not, you haven't prepared.
Speaker A:It's going to be a rude awakening.
Speaker A:She's like, no, I'm hell bent, I want to do it.
Speaker A:I never like, I would obviously, you know, she'd be devastated if she, if it did go away and she didn't get had an opportunity.
Speaker A:But that year was obviously the Olympics.
Speaker A:Like she had so much else going on and so I don't know, I feel like she's been very quiet so she's been preparing.
Speaker C:She will dial things in to a degree that no other athlete, no one.
Speaker A:Else.
Speaker C:That I am 100% sure.
Speaker A:Yes.
Speaker B:Well, like Rennie kind of mentioned earlier, like the tech and the scars, it makes me like so stressed out now.
Speaker B:And I'm curious Vinnie, in your perspective, like how much, how much now you have to be like calculating your carbs and like have your aerodynamic and your water bottle position.
Speaker B:Like the amount of things you have to think about now just ugh.
Speaker B:Instead of just like there's so much to think about in Ironman already.
Speaker A:Yeah, I know there, yeah, exactly.
Speaker A:There's so much to think about and just training your gut too to be able to handle a hundred grams of carbohydrates per hour on the bike so that you can get off the bike and run fully fueled.
Speaker A:Um, and then being able to also take in a solid amount of nutrition in the first half of the marathon too.
Speaker A:Um, yeah, I think.
Speaker A:But it's exciting.
Speaker A:I mean we get to see faster times, we get to see athletes like you know, going insanely fast and, and it's a great time for women in sport.
Speaker A:Just so many rock stars on the.
Speaker B:Start line and we've kind of mentioned a few of the.
Speaker B:Like to go now to the new names, there are a bunch of debutantes.
Speaker B:Historically it was always like, oh no, no, you can't win cone on your first try.
Speaker B:But now I think we've thrown that out the door.
Speaker B:You can obviously win on your first try.
Speaker B:We have like, we've mentioned Julie, we've mentioned Solve Egg.
Speaker B:There's also like Tamara is her first one and she's going to be a solid runner.
Speaker B:We haven't even mentioned Holly Lawrence, our another world champion.
Speaker B:And like of course she like didn't have a great race at Placid, which is her only Ironman today.
Speaker B:Or she had a fine race but not like a world champion level race.
Speaker B:But she was only seven or eight months postpartum then.
Speaker B:So I am curious how much another four months.
Speaker B:Like if you can win a world championship, you obviously have some.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:Like, she obviously knows how to win at that level, so.
Speaker A:And she has a solid swim bike combination, too.
Speaker A:So, you know, she'll be in the mix, I think.
Speaker A:And then who knows late on the bike whether she's still there.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's.
Speaker A:And that she had definitely is another question mark.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:I think that's just the whole, like, I mean, she's a question mark because she's only done one and you have the, you throw in also the like coming off a baby and you just don't know.
Speaker B:Like you said, it takes a little like maybe she'll win next year.
Speaker B:It takes 18 months to turn it around.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Well, I think.
Speaker C:Oh, yeah, never mind.
Speaker B:Katie, what you're thinking.
Speaker B:You had a thought there.
Speaker D:Katie is thinking, it could absolutely scare me.
Speaker D: Maybe that's all I needed for: Speaker B:No, I was trying to think with.
Speaker C:Chelsea and her daughter, it was about 18 months.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker D:Okay, so Skyler is four now, isn't she still?
Speaker D: It was: Speaker B:Months postpartum when she won, which is.
Speaker A:See, it's a sweet spot, people.
Speaker A:It's a sweet spot.
Speaker D:Next year for Josie.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah.
Speaker C:I'll be ready for Kona.
Speaker A:Great.
Speaker B:Next year.
Speaker A:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker A:There you go.
Speaker A:It's going to be like Florida or something.
Speaker C:That scares me.
Speaker C:Could you imagine?
Speaker D:That's what I mean.
Speaker D:Here's your big, scary go.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Like, wait, Katie, have you been out to watch it ever?
Speaker C: ore Sports was a sponsor, was: Speaker C:So we've done the underwear run and I just remember everybody being like, oh.
Speaker B:You better like, watch out.
Speaker C:You'll catch like the Ironman bug or the Kona bug.
Speaker C:And like, I was still training.
Speaker C:I forget what I was training for, but oh, my gosh, I hated training.
Speaker C:There I was like, I'm going to quit triathlon.
Speaker C:Like, this is not going to make me want to do it because it's, it's, it's hard.
Speaker C:Like, it's hot, it's humid.
Speaker C:It's like the, the scenery is beautiful, but training wise, it's like just long.
Speaker B:Oh, no, I am with you.
Speaker B:I'm going to say something now that's going to get me, like, canceled again.
Speaker B:But, like, I hate training in Hawaii.
Speaker B:Like in Kona.
Speaker B:Oh, my.
Speaker B:Like, all like, Rinny.
Speaker C:I know.
Speaker B:Loves it.
Speaker B:Chelsea's like, oh, I step off the plane, I love it.
Speaker B:I'm like, this is the worst thing.
Speaker B:I hate writing on the Queen K. I hate running On Ali' I'm like.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah, but you just, you're out there and you're in like the elements and you're like thinking about the race and this is where legends were made.
Speaker C:I mean, there's that too.
Speaker C:No, I have been.
Speaker C:It was, it was really.
Speaker C:I. I'm glad that I got that experience to like, be there.
Speaker C:I think at the time, like, I didn't know enough about triathlon to like, appreciate the competitors.
Speaker C:And I think it makes a big difference when you know the athletes racing on the course, or at least for me, like, having that connection with people.
Speaker C:And now that, like, now I'm much more invested in Ironman, knowing some of the athletes who are racing and having followed, like, gotten to know more who have kind of like gone across from like Short course to 70.3 to long course.
Speaker C:But I guess you consider 70.3 long course.
Speaker B:Are you just rooting for all the short course athletes then?
Speaker B:Are you just like, come on.
Speaker C:I mean, yeah, piece of me, but also like, I like them just being intertwined now.
Speaker C:Like, I feel like that's new.
Speaker C:Maybe I'm just too, too young.
Speaker C:I'm too young to have seen this in like past years of Iron man.
Speaker C:But I think the coolest part is now able to really see short course athletes go to Ironman and especially short course athletes.
Speaker C:That, I mean, I guess, like, this was your experience, Rennie, of like finding their spot in Ironman racing and like seeing like a much more confident athlete like Lisa Perder, I think is.
Speaker C:Well, Lisa and Solvay would be a good example, I feel like for that.
Speaker C:Of just like Lisa has won like World Cups and I think Solvay has two.
Speaker C:But they were never consistently at the top end of the results list.
Speaker C:And then seeing them race like in long course or in Ironman, you're like, whoa, like this.
Speaker C:This suits them.
Speaker C:And with Lisa Purder especially just because of the, like, she's always been the hot weather specialist of like world triathlon racing.
Speaker C:So yeah, to see how that goes to Kona will be.
Speaker C:Will be interesting.
Speaker D:Interesting.
Speaker B:All right, here's my.
Speaker B: There's: Speaker B:We have to remember that.
Speaker B:It's also obviously an.
Speaker B:It is less this year.
Speaker B:And I just feel like I want to say that's not because women didn't take their spots.
Speaker B:It's cause that's how many spots there were this year.
Speaker B:So there's fifty hundred women.
Speaker B:This is the last all women's one.
Speaker B:We go back together next year with the men in one day.
Speaker B:Um, we'll be talking a lot more about that next week.
Speaker B:I just, I know like our audience is always asking about that because the new qualification system people have had a lot of questions about and there is like early data out.
Speaker A:Whoa, that might be a shit show.
Speaker B:Yeah, it's not going the way it was expected.
Speaker B:We have, we shared kind of on our Instagram report from women in Tri UK that is kind of like counted how many spots and we will talk about that a lot more next week.
Speaker B:It's all I just want to say.
Speaker B:And then I also want to say, I want to say our whole feisty schedule now any everybody listening can come find the feisty crew at the Kona Canoe Club which is kind of on the backside of the shopping center just past the palace on Ali' I Drive.
Speaker B:We'll be there 8 to 11 every morning with a pop up doing podcasts.
Speaker B:We have a shakeout run with Rinni and Salty Bears on Wednesday morning at 6:45am we're gonna have giveaways and.
Speaker B:And she's gonna share tips so that you run fast is what I was promised.
Speaker A:It's so easy.
Speaker D:So Kelly, are you gonna go running?
Speaker D:Because we know you don't like training on the island.
Speaker B:I hate training.
Speaker B:I rented a bike, Joanne, just so that I.
Speaker B:And then I secretly stalk all the pros Strava so I can find the secret roads.
Speaker B:That's.
Speaker B:That's what I do.
Speaker B:So.
Speaker B:So those are all things we have.
Speaker B:We have a daily podcast, we have a daily newsletter.
Speaker B:But here's my last question for you guys.
Speaker B:So it was epically fast.
Speaker B:Two years ago on the all Women's day we had course, the overall course record from Lucy, the run course record and, and broke, broke Rooney's like decade old one.
Speaker B: d from that crazy day back in: Speaker B:Do we see these course records go down this year?
Speaker B:Is it hard to say without knowing the weather?
Speaker A:I think yeah.
Speaker A:We have to depends on the weather.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker A:We're at the mercy of the weather.
Speaker A:The weather's good then.
Speaker A:Yes.
Speaker A:You'll go with yes.
Speaker A:I think the run course record will come down again.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:Oh you think so?
Speaker B:Yeah, because it's 248 right now.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker D:But even if you look at the time.
Speaker D: So Lucy did an: Speaker A:Right.
Speaker D:But Laura, Philip, I know the course is completely different.
Speaker D:I know it's a different country, different climate, different course.
Speaker D: But she did an: Speaker D:I'm trying to see where it was.
Speaker D:805.
Speaker D:13, thereabouts.
Speaker D:So, like, that's 20 minutes faster.
Speaker D:I know, and I know it's apples and oranges and it's Canyon and Quintanaroo and it's Hokas and Skechers.
Speaker D:It's completely off the wall different.
Speaker D:But you have to think that, like, if they can do that.
Speaker D:And it's not the first time that the world's best time for an Ironman course has dropped in the space of six months with Kat setting it first in Texas.
Speaker D:So what I would ask is, what are your predicted new overall course times?
Speaker D:Let's not do swim, bike run, because we might have time.
Speaker D:But what do you think if.
Speaker D: in: Speaker D:What do we think they could be 8, 20.
Speaker D:We're going to revisit this, Rennie.
Speaker D:I'm going to write it down.
Speaker D:So 820.
Speaker B:Okay, I. I agree with you.
Speaker B:I also think that to podium is going to take in the 820s this year like it used to.
Speaker B:You know what I mean?
Speaker B:I think you're gonna have to be in the 820s.
Speaker D:So we're 820.
Speaker D:Okay, so, like, you're giving me an 820.
Speaker B:Oh, no, I'm agreeing with Rinny.
Speaker B:I think 820 could be the new course record.
Speaker D:Yeah, 820.
Speaker D:Katie, with all of your new ITU debutantes, do you have anybody who you reckon is just going to race it like a sprint gun to take?
Speaker C:No, I'm not picking anyone in.
Speaker C:Not picking anyone certain, but I'll go 8, 19, 56.
Speaker D:1956.
Speaker C:And so now they all have to start manifesting that number.
Speaker B:So.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker D:8, 19, 56.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker B:So we're gonna put this out there into the world, that it will be fast.
Speaker D:I. I'm.
Speaker D:I'm gonna go.
Speaker A:I'm.
Speaker D:I'm gonna go 8, 18, 30.
Speaker C:Oh, come on.
Speaker D:Yeah.
Speaker C:So now I just become that.
Speaker D:Random number in the middle.
Speaker D:You are the best of both worlds.
Speaker D:Because if it's lower with.
Speaker D:With the.
Speaker D:With the timings because of the time I picked.
Speaker D:But Kate, Kelly and Rinny, they're in trouble.
Speaker A:Yeah, you got it.
Speaker D:So Kelly's gonna.
Speaker A:It's gonna be 8, 20 and change.
Speaker B:It's gonna be 20 plus Z.
Speaker D:And Rinny is changing her mind now.
Speaker A:Well, 8, 20 and change.
Speaker A:8, 20.
Speaker A:So something I'll be like, will win because.
Speaker A:A little bit.
Speaker C:Yeah, because you'll be ambiguous.
Speaker B:Have you Seen the.
Speaker B:The pros now are all getting really into these wind prediction calculations.
Speaker B:I don't know if you've seen this going around.
Speaker B:There's, like, science.
Speaker B:There's a science guy who does, like, pressure systems and, like, wind predictions, and they, like, makes a whole map and the, like.
Speaker B:Yeah, they're getting.
Speaker B:They.
Speaker B:They've gone a little deeper.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Yep.
Speaker A:Yep.
Speaker D:That's for boredom.
Speaker D:Yeah.
Speaker C:I was gonna say this is within the realm of.
Speaker C:You start looking too much at other stuff.
Speaker C:Well, I mean, maybe not for.
Speaker C:That's a long ride.
Speaker A:The win.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker D:Before we finish up, Rinni, what are you most looking forward to for the week?
Speaker A:Pokeballs.
Speaker A:Acai balls?
Speaker A:No.
Speaker A:Swimming in the ocean.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:I saw dolphins last year, and I heard Tamara said she saw them already this year.
Speaker A:I don't swim anymore, so I'm gonna bring my flippers, my fins, and I'm actually gonna hop in and do, like, maybe to the coffee boat or something.
Speaker C:Is your whole crew coming?
Speaker A:No, I'm, like, solo, so I'm, like, leaving the kids with Tim for the first time ever.
Speaker A:I've only left it for, like, ever.
Speaker C:So he'll be doing a night man of his own.
Speaker A:I'm still breastfeeding, too, so I, like.
Speaker A:I've got to bring the pump.
Speaker A:Oh, but he's not.
Speaker A:We're not going to feed him any milk.
Speaker A:He's fine.
Speaker A:He's almost two.
Speaker A:He doesn't need it, but.
Speaker B:Sure.
Speaker A:But the old boobs might explode if I don't.
Speaker B:You gotta like.
Speaker B:You gotta like.
Speaker B:You gotta like.
Speaker B:What's the word?
Speaker B:I'm making a gesture.
Speaker A:Maybe I could do the underpants run because my boobs.
Speaker B:Oh, no.
Speaker B:Already?
Speaker B:I am leaving our kid here, too, because I was just like.
Speaker B:I can't deal with that.
Speaker B:So, you know, they'll figure it out.
Speaker A:It'll be fine.
Speaker B:Tim's a smart guy.
Speaker B:Tim and Steve both went to cal.
Speaker B:They can figure this out.
Speaker D:They're smart guys babysitting when they're looking after their own children.
Speaker B:Bingo.
Speaker A:Yeah, that'll be fine.
Speaker A:Awesome.
Speaker B:Well, thank you, guys.
Speaker B:And we will see everybody.
Speaker B:Well, not everybody, Katie.
Speaker B:We won't see you.
Speaker B:I know, but we'll see everybody else next week.
Speaker B:And we will see all the listeners there, too.
Speaker B:We'll include links to RCP and everything for the shakeout run for the podcast.
