In modern society, there are general status symbols that carry with them a sense of power. The reality of the power dynamic is always at play, and we all have the ability to make others feel small.
In Philippians 2:1-11 Paul gives us a picture of what Jesus does with his privilege and his power. Jesus doesn’t hold, or use power, but gives it up freely for the sake of others.
As we encounter Jesus and take in his love, he reorients us. We won’t genuinely sacrifice our need to be right, our need to better than other people, our need to put people in their place, unless we let the love of Jesus change us. When he does change us, we can guarantee that he will lead us to sacrifice for the same purpose that he came.
