Paul. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 3 of 30 Days of Prayer. In everything give thanks. I love it when one of my kids just spontaneously says, “Thank you.” That’s the heart of gratitude. When was the last time you looked up toward heaven and said, ‘God, you’re really incredible. I’ve sensed your faithfulness especially during this last week. I mean, I just knew you were there and would pull me through. It made me feel pretty special. Thank you!’ In fact, when was the last time the essence of your prayer time was gratitude? Try it—maybe today. Spend some time just telling God Thank You.
Ok. It’s easy to say ‘Thank you’ for that spectacular sunset and safe arrival at Aunt Ruth’s—but everything? I mean, my failing marriage? The car-accident that left my husband paralyzed? That sexual assault? Paul, are you kidding me? You must be out of your mind!!! Gratitude THEN??? Ok. Try this on. Paul did NOT say ‘be grateful FOR everything.’ He was under no delusion that somehow evil was a good thing. What he DID say was ‘IN everything give thanks’. Thank God for HIS presence with you IN the pain. You needn’t find some way to justify the tragedy, just look for how God is going to show up. Know that HE is faithful. It’s keeping your compass aligned to truth north. You may be beat up, kicked to the side—but you are never abandoned. He walks with you.
