Transcripts

Leif:

Rufus and Vanessa are once again having a way too

Leif:

intimate of a conversation for what the relationship should

Leif:

be. I guess Kelly Rutherford was busy having a kid or

Leif:

something, but she's in the episode.

Leif:

As the scene ends, Rufus tells Vanessa, let's get out of

Leif:

here. God damn it, Rufus. Where are you taking this girl

Leif:

to the same age as your child?

Steve:

That was. Okay, so

Steve:

there's a couple things to break down here, right? Like,

Steve:

Kelly Rutherford was available. And in this episode,

Steve:

at the same time, I. I believe

Steve:

that one of the things that they're really establishing

Steve:

is that Rufus doesn't want to talk to Lily about money

Steve:

things and about money troubles

Steve:

because she always offers to bail him out every

Steve:

single time, and he doesn't like that. Why

Steve:

are you opening up to this child?

Steve:

And again, and even more, the child that

Steve:

just said to you, hey, I'm just trying to spend as much time here

Steve:

as I can before you sell it, because I really

Steve:

like it here. And then you're like,

Steve:

let's get out of here. Where are you going?

Leif:

Hey, Upper east siders and all you scandal loving listeners out

Leif:

there, you just tuned into the non judging breakfast

Leif:

pod where the coffee is strong, the

Leif:

waffles are fresh, and the gossip is hotter than

Leif:

ever. My name is Leif, and I'm your seasoned Gossip

Leif:

Girl veteran.

Steve:

And I'm Steve, the newbie, the greenhorn, the, I

Steve:

don't know, Leif. What do we call this season 2 kid

Steve:

on gossip Girl?

Leif:

I'm not sure. But today's lesson is the subways for more

Leif:

people and middle class professionals.

Steve:

All right, well, as long as you're going to triple my investment, you can

Steve:

just take all of my money.

Leif:

Sounds good.

Steve:

So here's the deal, folks. Leaf has been watching

Steve:

Gossip Girl since it first aired, and I'm diving in for the

Steve:

first time. And together, we're your dynamic

Steve:

duo, bringing you all the drama, romance, and

Steve:

sometimes questionable fashion choices of this

Steve:

iconic 2007 series.

Leif:

That's right. Each week we'll be taking a deep dive into the

Leif:

show. One episode at a time. We analyze the

Leif:

hidden parallels and obscure references. Plus, we'll

Leif:

also be touching on all the behind the scenes gossip and some

Leif:

stories from fandom.

Steve:

And, since we're all about inclusivity here at the non judging

Steve:

breakfast pod, there is always room for you at our

Steve:

non judging breakfast table. So go ahead and grab a

Steve:

mimosa, some coffee, or maybe some of

Steve:

Chuck's special medicine. And let's go ahead and get this

Steve:

started. Although Nate's the one who who knows

Steve:

where all the dealers in Manhattan are?

Steve:

Apparently.

Leif:

Yes. Well, you gotta be able

Leif:

to pick up wherever you're at, you know, you never know. You never

Leif:

know when you're gonna need it.

Steve:

Oh, yeah, I understand.

Leif:

So, more news on the Blake

Leif:

Lively Justin Baldoni. Baldoni has now

Leif:

filed a lawsuit against, I believe it's the New York Times for

Leif:

defamation of character. So either way we're going to, we're going to have at

Leif:

least, probably two, at least two court cases about this and

Leif:

find out what happened.

Steve:

Yeah. Because where did this start? I thought

Steve:

it did it start from Blake

Steve:

promoting it and they weren't happy with

Steve:

how she was promoting the film. Where

Steve:

is that? Where like the tension, the

Steve:

post movie tension started?

Leif:

I mean, if you're going by the Baldoni

Leif:

side of the story, it's

Leif:

that Ryan Reynolds uses pool

Leif:

to like buddy buddy up to the author who had originally

Leif:

sold the rights to Baldoni, but

Leif:

then the author gave final cut to Blake

Leif:

Lively. All right,

Leif:

and then, and then, and then during the

Leif:

press tour, everyone basically

Leif:

ignored Baldoni. Everyone else on the

Leif:

movie ignored him and did not mention him at all. Unfriended

Leif:

him on social media.

Steve:

Wow.

Leif:

And there was, there was

Leif:

some swirling at the beginning about, about,

Leif:

you know, was it sexual assault? But then the whole

Leif:

groundswell came up against Blake and now

Leif:

they're saying that that was a, ah, whole like

Leif:

coordinated smear campaign. that's what Blake

Leif:

Lively's lawsuits about.

Steve:

Right.

Leif:

So we're going to find out that. But now

Leif:

tabloids and a couple of, I saw a couple

Leif:

of YouTube videos as well are trying to rope Penn

Leif:

Badgley into the situation. Oh, no, since he, he,

Leif:

apparently he knows. He definitely does know both of them.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Data Blake. And he's, you know,

Leif:

sort of, you know, friends. He's met Baldoni a

Leif:

few times and Paladini was on his podcast like over

Leif:

two years ago.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

But there's uncredited quotes from

Leif:

Pedenbagley and like tabloids

Leif:

saying that, you know, he stands with

Leif:

Baldoni. So now Pam Bagley is going to have to make an

Leif:

official statement about this appearance.

Steve:

Yeah. Oh, wow. And yeah, and

Steve:

that's funny because Penn Badgley

Steve:

often also comes across as very

Steve:

anti toxic masculinity. You were talking all, before

Steve:

we started about how Justin Baldoni really,

Steve:

that was his brand. Yeah. That's how he

Steve:

established himself. And so that's

Steve:

really interesting because I've always

Steve:

kind of gotten that impression. I found Penn

Steve:

Badgley also to be pretty pretentious,

Steve:

but I don't think that that takes away from the fact that I feel

Steve:

like he's very much one to listen to

Steve:

women, you know?

Leif:

So enough about that. We're here to talk about

Leif:

Gossip Girl, Season 2, Episode

Leif:

22, Southern Gentlemen Prefer

Leif:

Blondes Original Air Date April

Leif:

27, 2009 and of course, that's, based on

Leif:

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the 1953

Leif:

musical comedy film starring Marilyn

Leif:

Monroe. Also a stage play and a

Leif:

book. Probably best known for the number.

Leif:

Diamonds are a girl's best friend.

Steve:

Yeah. Yes.

Leif:

Carried a lot of places.

Steve:

Oh, yeah, yeah.

Leif:

Wonderful. See us show up on Gossip Girl.

Leif:

Be a great thing for 100. Episode

Leif:

Episode written by Leela

Leif:

Gernstein. This is her first of seven episodes

Leif:

of Gossip Girl. She was in the writer's room for three years,

Leif:

going from here till 2011.

Leif:

also previously worked on the OC

Leif:

and a show that I liked but not a lot of people watched

Leif:

was Eli Stone. She, followed up

Leif:

this with a few other writing gigs, including,

Leif:

Harlow, Dixie, and, most recently credited as

Leif:

a creator of a hulu show called

Leif:

Saint X that released in 2023.

Steve:

All right.

Leif:

Episode was directed by Patrick R.

Leif:

Norris, back for his fifth episode in the

Leif:

chair. First season did Bad News Blair

Leif:

and High Society. Second season did the

Leif:

Serena Also Rises and It's a

Leif:

Wonderful Life. A, pretty good, well directed

Leif:

episodes.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, this was. This. Yeah,

Steve:

the. The directing was. It was

Steve:

good.

Leif:

Why m don't you give us the Vulture recap?

Steve:

All right, here you go. The characters on

Steve:

Gossip Girl are steeped in problems of, a

Steve:

decidedly 2009 nature

Steve:

problems most New York residents will sympathize

Steve:

with. The real estate bubble, the

Steve:

recession, the actions of a certain imbecile

Steve:

former president, as Dan puts it, are

Steve:

taking a toll on their wallets and their psyches.

Steve:

But these outside forces have not changed their

Steve:

essential nature. Like a variety of magnets

Steve:

stuck in the same force field, these creatures

Steve:

are forced to perform a constant dance of

Steve:

attraction and are repulsed by one another

Steve:

to varying degrees.

Steve:

Ferromagnetic ex lovers Blair and Chuck,

Steve:

for instance, find themselves suctioned

Steve:

together at every opportunity. And though

Steve:

both also feel the pull of Nate

Steve:

Archibald, their connection with each other is

Steve:

decidedly stronger. Georgina Sparks

Steve:

is sucked away from Jesus to lock horns with her

Steve:

arch enemy, Blair. Meanwhile, Vanessa,

Steve:

opts to stay off the force field that

Steve:

is in Brooklyn this episode.

Steve:

So repulsed is she by her encounters

Steve:

with Chuck Bass. Dan does,

Steve:

too, which is a good thing for the writers,

Steve:

as if young Mr. Humphrey were to set foot in

Steve:

Manhattan he would no doubt be propelled towards

Steve:

Serena, thereby disrupting the plot for

Steve:

everyone else and making it their

Steve:

sucky. another sucky episode wherein the real

Steve:

life couple spends the whole hour

Steve:

mooring at one another. And it

Steve:

wasn't a sucky episode.

Steve:

I keep forgetting that they're. They're still together then.

Leif:

Who?

Steve:

Pen and Blake.

Leif:

Yes.

Steve:

Yeah. So he knows her. He knows her

Steve:

pretty well.

Leif:

Yes. We get into

Leif:

Act 1 with the gossip Girl

Leif:

narration. Eventually,

Leif:

every queen finds herself in unfamiliar

Leif:

territory outside the castle walls. In Blair

Leif:

Waldorf's case, the Village.

Leif:

Nate and Blair are walking on the streets of the East Village

Leif:

home, of Blair's future school, nyu. Blair

Leif:

is a bit squeamish about subways and being out of the

Leif:

Upper east side.

Steve:

Yeah. This is when Nate's trying to show

Steve:

her around.

Leif:

And so they decide to time

Leif:

jump over Blair's final interview.

Leif:

A chance to give us one more college interview.

Steve:

Yeah, I. I thought that was an interesting choice. That she's just

Steve:

in now. Yeah, that. That. That Cyrus just pulled

Steve:

the string and she's in.

Leif:

Pardon me. Would have been nice to see Cyrus again, because it's

Leif:

always nice to see Cyrus. But, yeah, I would have

Leif:

liked to see Blair have a composed

Leif:

college interview.

Steve:

Yeah. And. And m. Get it done. And be impressive.

Leif:

Yes. Rufus is taking Dan and

Leif:

Jenny shopping with his real estate money.

Leif:

Rufus is in an ultra happy mood, and Dan

Leif:

spies him checking out an antique engagement

Leif:

ring.

Steve:

So he's got this real estate money that he doesn't

Steve:

have.

Leif:

You get a truck. You get a truck.

Steve:

Because. Because I listed my

Steve:

gallery at more than I thought I could list it

Steve:

at. You didn't sell

Steve:

it yet. You just listed it.

Leif:

Such a dumbass.

Steve:

He's. So that's why

Steve:

you're only somewhere in the millions, Rufus.

Leif:

Yeah. Blair and Serena are discussing their

Leif:

respective love lives. Blair calls out Gabriel as a.

Leif:

As a foreigner and wants to spy on him with Serena.

Steve:

There is zero indication of Gabriel

Steve:

being Southern.

Leif:

You know, he definitely has a southern accent.

Steve:

I. I didn't pick up on it at all. I didn't feel

Steve:

like.

Leif:

It's not an exaggerated one, but I think he. It's

Leif:

definitely there.

Steve:

Yeah, I never. I never picked up on

Steve:

it. I feel like he does a southern accent about as well

Steve:

as Ed does an American accent.

Leif:

Nate and Chuck are, shooting hoops and discussing Blair.

Leif:

Chuck urges Nate to talk to him about her

Leif:

like they used to before everything went down in season one.

Steve:

Yeah. And this is where I'm kind of like, are you working

Steve:

things out, Chuck, or are you making another

Steve:

play or stewing another scheme?

Leif:

I think he was actually genuine at the

Leif:

beginning, but as soon as Nate pushed

Leif:

him about it, he kind of. He's like,

Leif:

okay, yeah, we're going to do this.

Steve:

Yeah, I kind of felt that, too.

Steve:

And I get. I got it from Nate. Like, I

Steve:

understood why Nate was doing that.

Steve:

I don't think he had to. And I think it only

Steve:

made things more uncomfortable.

Leif:

Yeah. But I got it, because I think

Leif:

Chuck. He realized that he could lose

Leif:

Nate this season. He definitely, I think,

Leif:

learned from that.

Steve:

Yeah, I think so.

Leif:

And as we know, he is one of the three things that Chuck actually

Leif:

loves.

Steve:

Yeah, four, but one he can't

Steve:

admit.

Leif:

And, Chuck's athletic wear continues to impress.

Steve:

Oh, yeah, we. Yes.

Leif:

The velour track suit and the fiaschat.

Steve:

Yep. That was actually. Well,

Steve:

spoiler alert. That's going to be my pick today.

Leif:

But I

Leif:

wasn't pressing a good way.

Steve:

I loved it. I thought it was the

Steve:

funniest thing, and I thought it was so chucked

Steve:

that I had to give it a shout out.

Leif:

Mr. Charming, aka Gabriel, is wowing

Leif:

Rufus and Lily with tales of leaving Big Tobacco in

Leif:

favor of a more altruistic

Leif:

pursuits. Gabriel ducks out, but promises

Leif:

Serena that things will be different once this deal

Leif:

is completed.

Steve:

So I did not. The My m.

Steve:

Only complaint in this arc

Steve:

right now. I don't particularly care

Steve:

for the dramatic irony. I don't

Steve:

care to know that this is a

Steve:

scheme before it turns into

Steve:

a scheme. I'm watching him talk

Steve:

to Serena about this, knowing that he's doing this

Steve:

for the. The Vander Woodsen

Steve:

money and that he's going to

Steve:

use Serena to get money for.

Steve:

For either this investment, but more likely to just

Steve:

rip her off. Right. I see this

Steve:

happening. I don't know if I would see

Steve:

it as clearly if

Steve:

I didn't know it was a scheme

Steve:

already. I kind of wish we didn't

Steve:

know that Gabriel and Poppy are working

Steve:

together.

Leif:

Yeah. It just makes Serena look dumb.

Steve:

Yes, it does. Which,

Steve:

yeah, looks like.

Leif:

Blair is outside the building in spyware.

Leif:

Chuck pulls up and becomes intrigued by the charade.

Leif:

They spot Gabriel, exit the building, and hop into a car with

Leif:

Poppy.

Steve:

You met her in front of

Steve:

Serena's house. You had Poppy

Steve:

roll up in front of your girlfriend's

Steve:

house.

Leif:

Yeah. You're just looking to get caught.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Also, there was really bad ADR on

Leif:

the explanation of Poppy.

Leif:

Like, I'm not even sure if it was actually Leighton Meester saying

Leif:

it.

Steve:

Oh, I didn't even catch that.

Leif:

It's probably like a writer.

Steve:

That's funny. I wonder if she said the wrong name.

Leif:

I mean, that was. I mean. Oh, and you mean and then they.

Steve:

And they dubbed it.

Leif:

Yeah, but like, the way I could tell is

Leif:

because the rest of the shot, you could hear the ambience of New York

Leif:

and then just suddenly like that all cuts out and you hear her

Leif:

name.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

we go to a commercial with another Gossip

Leif:

Girl blast. And ah.

Leif:

When a queen discovers her best maiden is with a

Leif:

dragon disguise, the only thing to do is

Leif:

pull up the drawbridge and trap it.

Leif:

And we go into Act 2.

Leif:

The next day, Blair is telling Serena what she

Leif:

saw over the phone. Gabriel walks into

Leif:

Serena's room. However, the scene cuts before

Leif:

Gabriel can give his explanation.

Steve:

Yeah, I. I didn't really have much for this. Just

Steve:

Gabriel. Go away.

Leif:

We shift back to Blair, who is now explaining

Leif:

the situation to Nate. Nate finds out about Blair

Leif:

and Chuck's impromptu spy mission,

Leif:

Says he's fine, but his space guard is telling a different

Leif:

story.

Steve:

It's so funny how often Serena lets Blair get

Steve:

in her head and then doesn't right away

Steve:

here that she's not trusting Blair and

Steve:

Blair's instincts. Despite knowing that

Steve:

Blair calls these

Steve:

things a lot of the time. Like, Blair

Steve:

can sniff out game knows game. So Blair

Steve:

can sniff out a schemer.

Leif:

Yeah, but Serena's in love and

Leif:

dumb.

Steve:

She's a.

Leif:

You know, she.

Steve:

Yeah, she.

Leif:

I mean, she's shiny object. Shiny object.

Steve:

Shiny object. Shiny

Steve:

object. That is inappropriately older than me.

Leif:

Gabriel is explaining to Serena that he is still pretending

Leif:

to be with Poppy because her contacts are the ones propping up

Leif:

his business deal. Serena reluctantly agrees to

Leif:

go along with the plan for one week

Leif:

only.

Steve:

Yeah, and honestly,

Steve:

sirenishative just said call me in a week.

Steve:

Boom. Okay, if you're going to do this, go play your

Steve:

games. Play your games with Poppy

Steve:

and call me in a week.

Leif:

Are you really that horny, Serena?

Steve:

Yeah. Well.

Leif:

Well, yeah, kind of. Kind

Leif:

of because you're written by a

Leif:

man.

Leif:

Actually, wasn't this episode written by a woman?

Steve:

It was, but the character

Steve:

created. Yes, well, created

Steve:

for television by a man.

Leif:

Dan is at the coffee shop explaining his cater

Leif:

waiter job to Vanessa. Vanessa suggests that Dan

Leif:

and Jenny should let Rufus know they support him proposing to

Leif:

Lily. However, Rufus walks through the room having

Leif:

an angry telephone conversation, and the kids

Leif:

decide now might not be the best time.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. Vanessa's right though.

Steve:

Yeah, she had a good episode.

Leif:

I did not mind her.

Steve:

No, I thought she. Yeah, I. There's a scene

Steve:

coming up that she was a part of that. We'll discuss in more

Steve:

detail, but she was fine.

Leif:

Serena is trying on dresses while Blair is trying

Leif:

to convince her to dump Gabriel.

Steve:

He's having her cake and eating it and eating yours,

Steve:

too. So

Steve:

gross. Oh, Blair.

Steve:

But this is, again, like, trust Blair, because,

Steve:

like, just trust her. She can

Steve:

sniff this shit out.

Leif:

Rufus and Vanessa are once again having a way too

Leif:

intimate of a conversation for what the relationship should

Leif:

be. I guess Kelly Rutherford was busy having a kid or

Leif:

something, but she's in the episode.

Leif:

As the scene ends, Rufus tells Vanessa,

Leif:

let's get out of here. God damn it, Rufus, where are

Leif:

you taking this girl to the same age as your child?

Steve:

That was.

Steve:

Okay, so there's a couple

Steve:

of things to break down here, right? Like, Kelly Rutherford

Steve:

was available. And in this episode, at the same

Steve:

time, I believe that one of

Steve:

the things that they're really establishing is that

Steve:

Rufus doesn't want to talk to Lilly about money

Steve:

things and about money troubles

Steve:

because she always offers to bail him out every

Steve:

single time. And he doesn't like that. Why

Steve:

are you opening up to this child?

Steve:

And again, and even more, the child that

Steve:

just said to you, hey, I'm just trying to spend as much time here as

Steve:

I can before you sell it, because I really like

Steve:

it here. And then you're like, let's

Steve:

get out of here. Where are you going? Are you

Steve:

just kicking her out of the place that she has the keys

Steve:

to that, or are you taking her somewhere? Are you

Steve:

going somewhere with her to continue this

Steve:

inappropriate conversation that you already apologized for

Steve:

laying on her?

Leif:

They really needed to cast someone as one of Rufus's

Leif:

bandmates.

Steve:

Yeah, Rufus needs a friend.

Steve:

Rufus just needs a

Steve:

fucking friend.

Leif:

Or, like, a neighbor. Anyone of, age

Leif:

appropriate.

Steve:

Yeah, like Lily has. Lily has

Steve:

Bex, you know, Lilia.

Steve:

Yes, but somebody that she can but bounce

Steve:

things off of. You know, she has a

Steve:

foil that. That Rufus doesn't have, and it

Steve:

always ends up being Vanessa. And it's so

Steve:

weird because there's this

Steve:

part of him that it's almost

Steve:

fatherly to Venessa but

Steve:

lays on her that you don't lay on your

Steve:

kids.

Leif:

Well, I think that's what the actor is trying to get across. But the

Leif:

writing is not helping him out at all.

Steve:

No, never.

Steve:

It never helps when you have a

Steve:

Rufus. Vanessa.

Leif:

The actor chemistry is not romantic, at all. It's just.

Leif:

It's the situations the writers keep putting them in.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Nate is showing Chuck the apartment he is leasing

Leif:

enough in the fall, which is halfway between NYU and

Leif:

Columbia, sort of. Nate tells Chuck to back

Leif:

off, flare. And then proceeds to pee all over the

Leif:

walls.

Steve:

I. I can't blame Nate

Steve:

here. But also.

Leif:

Oh, I can't.

Steve:

I. I get him Being a

Steve:

jealous teenage boy.

Steve:

Right. But also. Calm down, Nate.

Leif:

I mean, jealous is a feeling. Controlling is an

Leif:

action.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Leif:

You can't help how you feel, but you control how you act.

Steve:

Yeah, you're right.

Leif:

Chuck steps outside to take a call from Blair.

Leif:

Blair recruits him to help with a takedown of

Leif:

Gabriel.

Steve:

Yeah. And I mean, Chuck and Blair team ups are

Steve:

really the lifeblood of the non judging breakfast

Steve:

club. And those two need to

Steve:

scheme together. They don't all. Even though

Steve:

they can do it platonically. We've seen them do it platonically.

Steve:

But they need to scheme together.

Leif:

And we go to a commercial break. Queen of

Leif:

hearts or queen of heartache? Careful, Bee.

Leif:

Cut off the head of one love triangle and one of your

Leif:

own might grow back in its place.

Leif:

At, Lily's co op meeting slash party, Blair

Leif:

pulls Gabriel aside to bond with him. At the

Leif:

same time, we see Chuck leading Poppy into the building to

Leif:

reconcile with Serena.

Steve:

Yeah. And then they meet and they.

Steve:

Yeah, you can go to the next one. Ah.

Leif:

Yeah. Poppy enters with Chuck and blows up.

Leif:

And she blows up at, Gabriel, who makes a big show

Leif:

of siding with Serena.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And they made that work for them. Pretty.

Steve:

They. They really did. They. They were right on

Steve:

top of it.

Leif:

And really, they definitely outplayed Chuck and Blair there

Leif:

completely.

Steve:

Completely.

Leif:

And impromptu.

Steve:

Yeah. Seemingly. Unless they had a,

Steve:

if we ever get busted, this is what we do plan.

Steve:

But they. But it also had to happen right

Steve:

there. The Poppy investors

Steve:

before that week had to pull out

Steve:

so that he could go to Serena.

Steve:

So I. They basically sped up their

Steve:

timeline.

Leif:

It seems Dan comes home

Leif:

to find Vanessa waiting for him with his six pack and a bottle

Leif:

of vodka. Vanessa reveals her hookup with Chuck.

Leif:

It sounds like she was also going to drop the bomb

Leif:

about Rufus's financial status.

Steve:

Yeah. And she should, because you don't lay that on your

Steve:

kid's best friend. And

Steve:

I had another. I had another. I hope they're not going to bang.

Steve:

And they still haven't. And I'm really glad that they really are just

Steve:

being friends.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

And I really want that to continue.

Leif:

Yes. The. The head to head.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Laying down. Head to head.

Steve:

Yep.

Leif:

It was very, very friendly. Very friendly.

Steve:

Friendly. And yeah,

Steve:

again, I thought Vanessa was good in this

Steve:

episode.

Leif:

So there's more signs of Vanessa banking Rufus Than. Than

Leif:

Dan at this point.

Steve:

Like, reluctantly, like, he's my boss.

Leif:

Jenny and Rufus are walking down the street. Jenny is

Leif:

parenting Rufus now.

Steve:

And also Jenny. When was

Steve:

Rufus ever

Steve:

supportive of you? You're like, oh, you told

Steve:

me if I ever want my dreams, I've got.

Steve:

To go get them.

Steve:

No, he told you, stop getting your dreams and come live at

Steve:

home.

Leif:

That was when she was eight.

Steve:

Yeah, when she was eight. Yeah, you can definitely live

Steve:

your dreams as long as it's on my timeline.

Steve:

I was baffled by that

Steve:

interaction.

Leif:

Serena is talking to Gabriel about his future and

Leif:

insists on helping him find new investors.

Steve:

She's such an easy mark.

Leif:

Yeah, the. The tag team. You know, two episodes with

Leif:

Poppy manipulating her to go to Spain, and then.

Steve:

Yeah, she just.

Leif:

They just worked her good.

Steve:

It worked her good.

Leif:

Chuck, clearly spying on the previous conversation,

Leif:

approaches Gabriel. Chuck is fishing for info on the

Leif:

first night Gabriel met Serena.

Steve:

And, good for Chuck for getting his hands dirty and

Steve:

going in for in the most Chuck way

Steve:

possible. Give me the details.

Leif:

Nate surprises Blair by coming to the party. He

Leif:

invites Blair to move in with him, to which she happily

Leif:

agrees. However, Chuck approaches the pair and entices

Leif:

Blair with continued scheming. Gossip Girl

Leif:

quips, sometimes a queen

Leif:

has to make a choice. A castle with the white knight

Leif:

or a quest with a dark prince. So

Leif:

be. What'll it be? Netflix night

Leif:

with Nate or battling a beast with

Leif:

bass?

Steve:

Nate needs to realize this isn't

Steve:

about Chuck and Blair. It's about

Steve:

Serena. And Nate should get

Steve:

involved because Nate does usually get protective

Steve:

of Serena.

Steve:

And he's so in his head about Blair

Steve:

and Chuck that he's now.

Steve:

And like you said before, and he's trying to control

Steve:

this situation and trying to control

Steve:

Blair, and it's leading him

Steve:

to not do what he would ordinarily

Steve:

do, which is rally to help the

Steve:

friend.

Leif:

One track mind. We move

Leif:

into Act 3. We come back from a commercial

Leif:

to see Gabriel once again charming Lillian.

Leif:

Rufus, it looks like Gabriel has at least one new

Leif:

investor.

Steve:

Yeah. And, at least Lily has the sense

Steve:

to say I need to look it

Steve:

over first. Send me

Steve:

the papers. Send it to my assistant.

Steve:

Let me look over it. But yeah, I'm interested.

Leif:

Yes, but you get the sense that Lily is going to do

Leif:

this regardless because she wants the guy that

Leif:

her daughter's dating to be seen as successful.

Steve:

Yeah, I. I totally see

Steve:

that too.

Leif:

She. She couldn't give a. About the actual company.

Steve:

No, no. Or the money she's giving

Steve:

to him.

Leif:

I liked what river said in the earlier scene, what do you say? It's

Leif:

like, like, doing well by.

Steve:

Doing good or something?

Leif:

yeah, I'm sure Bass really cares about that. Bass Industries.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah, they're gonna, they, they,

Steve:

they'll build a hotel using the WI

Steve:

fi. Like in the. Using the WI fi

Steve:

money.

Leif:

Serena and Gabriel's celebration is interrupted by

Leif:

Blair, who pulls Serena off to her room. Chuck

Leif:

and Blair fail to convince Serena of Gabriel's

Leif:

deceit. After Serena goes back to the party, Chuck points

Leif:

out that there is only one person that truly

Leif:

knows what happened that night.

Leif:

I think they did a much better job of bringing her in this time.

Steve:

You're absolutely 100% right. But my

Steve:

first watch through at that moment, I'm

Steve:

like, oh, God, no, no, please, no,

Steve:

please do not do this to me again. That's the

Steve:

last time I'm going to say anything bad about her in this

Steve:

episode because I actually agree

Steve:

they did a, far better job this

Steve:

time.

Leif:

Vanessa and Dan are having a pity

Leif:

party. Dubya catches the stray.

Steve:

Former president.

Steve:

Dan is really being a grown up about this, though.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Especially when Vanessa says, do you blame

Steve:

your dad? And he goes through his list

Steve:

of who he's blaming and he's like, not my dad.

Steve:

My dad's probably the only person more upset than I

Steve:

am. So really kudos to Dan

Steve:

for how he's handling it.

Leif:

He should drink more. It takes that, takes the edge off.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Back at the party, Rufus pulls Gabriel aside and

Leif:

demands to be let in on the investment.

Steve:

Rufus, stop fighting so hard

Steve:

to pay for a scam.

Steve:

He's so offended. And,

Steve:

I felt like Gabriel really was like.

Leif:

He felt bad about it.

Steve:

Yeah, I felt like Gabriel, which is.

Leif:

Interesting, interesting kind of wrinkle.

Steve:

Well, I think Gabriel and Poppy are trying

Steve:

to rip off a bunch of people who can

Steve:

afford to be ripped off, who will never miss the money

Steve:

and never think anything of it. And now here's

Steve:

Rufus handing over his life savings and his

Steve:

life's work. And Gabriel actually is

Steve:

like, oh,

Steve:

dude, you don't want in on this.

Steve:

And he's like, stop looking down on me. This is how life

Steve:

works. He's like, fuck, if I don't take

Steve:

his money, I'm going to look like a huge

Steve:

asshole and I'm going to screw this up.

Steve:

yeah. So I did feel there was a moment of

Steve:

conscience.

Leif:

Yes.

Steve:

From Gabriel, that it is a matter of we're going to just

Steve:

rip off a bunch of rich fucks who will never know this

Steve:

money's gone.

Leif:

Which is which is nice. He's not just a cartoon villain.

Steve:

Yes. And he's, to an

Steve:

extent. What's the word I'm looking for? He's

Steve:

almost. If any of this

Steve:

scheme is true, it's almost Robin Hood,

Steve:

like, you know, to take it from

Steve:

taking these. This money from these rich people to

Steve:

invest into something else. But I don't think there's an

Steve:

investment.

Leif:

They're clearly just taking the run.

Steve:

They're just going to take the money and run.

Leif:

Yeah. And he's. It's not like he was poor or anything.

Steve:

No, no.

Leif:

Nate reluctantly agrees for Blair to go on another

Leif:

mission with Chuck instead of going to look at the new apartment,

Leif:

which is, of course, code for taking a ride to

Leif:

pound town.

Steve:

I liked Blair here asking for

Steve:

his trust and being like, look,

Steve:

you. You can't control this all the time.

Steve:

You're going to have to trust me. And he gave her

Steve:

that. He gave her that trust.

Leif:

And now I want to see Doretto wearing a Mets hat.

Steve:

Facts. Also,

Steve:

I. It's funny because in an earlier

Steve:

episode, the captain was talking about taking him to a Yankees

Steve:

game, so I've always assumed it was

Steve:

a Yankees fan. Now we're learning he's a Mets fan.

Leif:

I think he's just a sports fan.

Steve:

That's. I, would, I would agree. But the fact that

Steve:

it's that the Mets play almost every day,

Steve:

almost three, you know, three days a week, usually

Steve:

at home. So if he goes to games that

Steve:

regularly, I'd think that that'd be more his team.

Steve:

But you're right. I do believe that he is just an all around sports

Steve:

fan. He likes sock.

Leif:

It looks like Chuck and Blair off to talk to Georgina

Leif:

Sparks. We go to the commercial with

Leif:

another Gossip Girl narration.

Leif:

Get off your brooms, kids. We're off to see the wicked

Leif:

witch of the Upper east side.

Leif:

The next morning, Chuck and Blair wake up in the back of a

Leif:

limo, which is parked out in the woods. Oh, look,

Leif:

they're holding hands. We've got bullets flying

Leif:

everywhere this episode. And Nancy Pelozzi catches

Leif:

one. As Chuck explains, he didn't really need Blair to

Leif:

be there at all.

Steve:

Nancy Pelosi air.

Leif:

I like how they both have their, like, little kits.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

For cleaning up Blair.

Steve:

You can't ask for trust and then fall

Steve:

asleep cuddled up in a limo. And then

Steve:

when Chuck gives you his whole

Steve:

speech at the end, you can't fall for

Steve:

his because you were falling for his shit

Steve:

in. In that moment. Her reaction of being frustrated

Steve:

when he left. Yeah, Blair, you asked

Steve:

to Be.

Steve:

To.

Steve:

For trust. So be.

Leif:

Be worthy of it.

Steve:

yeah. Be trustworthy.

Leif:

Chuck finds that Georgina has traded in boot camp

Leif:

for Jesus camp. Omjc. M.

Steve:

I. I'm gonna say I liked Michelle

Steve:

Trachtenberg a lot more this

Steve:

episode. I like Georgina Sparks

Steve:

more the. This scene. Initially it was

Steve:

like when she. Chuck Bass. I was about to be

Steve:

like, oh, no, no, no. And then

Steve:

instantly, like when she started, like where

Steve:

this episode takes her and her character

Steve:

right now, where it. Where we're seeing her

Steve:

at.

Steve:

I really liked it. I really like it.

Leif:

They're leaning into the zany.

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

Serena and Gabriel are lying in bed, basking in

Leif:

the afterglow. Serena catches Gabriel in a lie

Leif:

about the night at, butter and immediately peaces

Leif:

out. She's got to go.

Steve:

Yeah. maybe next time catch him

Steve:

in a lie before you bang just your

Steve:

post coital. Maybe I shouldn't trust him.

Leif:

It's such a weird situation because, like, he is with Poppy

Leif:

still and she's like, totally cool with this, I guess.

Steve:

Oh, yeah, because he's. Yeah, I guess

Steve:

she is. Yeah, that. Sorry,

Steve:

babe. I'm gonna have to bang Serena just to keep

Steve:

this thing up. I, won't. I won't be able to keep it up. Well, you know,

Steve:

because they were banging in Spain, so. She already

Steve:

knows.

Leif:

Yeah, she knows from the. I think it was planned from

Leif:

the start.

Steve:

Yeah, she left on purpose, I believe. I think

Steve:

that that's why she.

Leif:

Yeah, the whole. Yeah, the whole thing was to seduce him.

Steve:

Yeah, she's. She kind of knew he'd have to

Steve:

be banging Serena as part of this plan.

Steve:

She's cool with it.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Poppy open.

Leif:

She likes that money.

Steve:

She likes the money more. Yeah. More than. More than

Steve:

the, loyalty.

Leif:

Back at the camp, Georgina explains to Chuck how

Leif:

she found Jesus. She also confirms that Serena

Leif:

and her were not Butter. That the night before the SATs,

Leif:

I.

Steve:

Found her to be more likable and believable.

Steve:

And I. I liked the. I liked

Steve:

Chuck calling our. On the. You're here

Steve:

so that your parents don't send you back to

Steve:

boot camp, essentially, which, I really do

Steve:

believe is the case. But I

Steve:

again thought that she was at least likable that

Steve:

she puts on this front.

Leif:

Well, they're making her a new character for the

Leif:

TV show Down before. In the first season.

Leif:

They try to go with the book version, which was like a cross

Leif:

between Serena and Blair. It's like the charisma of Serena

Leif:

with the scheming of Blair.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And she just doesn't have that charisma of Serena.

Steve:

No, she does not.

Leif:

But she could be the crazy friend that just does

Leif:

crazy stuff.

Steve:

Yeah, she can be the wild card.

Leif:

Yeah, she's the joker.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Steve:

And again, already I like her more.

Leif:

Now that Serena's gone. Poppy busts in and

Leif:

hops on top of Gabriel. It was a scheme all

Leif:

along.

Steve:

Wha. Again, I wish we didn't

Steve:

already know. Because we knew.

Steve:

Yeah. Surprise.

Leif:

Serena calls Chuck and lets him know that he and Blair

Leif:

were right about Gabriel lying, but she doesn't know

Leif:

why. Chuck discovers that Blair took his limo.

Leif:

Huh? And Gossip Girl has this to say.

Leif:

And eventually a queen realizes that a

Leif:

dark prince only has one thing on his mind,

Leif:

and it ain't slaying dragons.

Leif:

So she takes her pumpkin carriage and

Leif:

goes back to the castle.

Steve:

Respect Blair for. For seeing

Steve:

through the scheme at that point and then leaving, being

Steve:

like, nope, I'm not dealing with this shit. Take me out of here.

Leif:

And we go into the epilogue. At

Leif:

Gabriel's hotel. He and Poppy realize Serena is on to

Leif:

them by. When listening to a voicemail from Serena,

Leif:

who says she is coming back.

Steve:

She's a idiot.

Leif:

Rufus, not Serena, knocks on Gabriel's door

Leif:

to drop off his check for the investment.

Steve:

You idiot. I wanted to come here and give it to

Steve:

you in person. Go.

Steve:

All right.

Leif:

Will, er go to Nate's apartment to apologize for going

Leif:

off with Chuck.

Steve:

I felt like Nate was pretty adult here in

Steve:

a lot of it. I felt like his. I. What

Steve:

I liked is that he came clean and was like,

Steve:

Look, I was jealous. I was trying to

Steve:

control the situation. Trying to control you. I'm

Steve:

sorry. I. I thought that he was

Steve:

maybe not adult, but he was being self aware in

Steve:

that moment.

Leif:

Fair. But yeah. Yeah. it was already done.

Steve:

No. Well, I mean, yeah.

Leif:

In Brooklyn, Rufus wakes up Dan

Leif:

with a couple of mugs of coffee and a dad

Leif:

talk. However, Jenny comes in with the ring

Leif:

Rubus had been eyeing previously.

Steve:

This was sweet. But he offers to pay them

Steve:

back. And with what? Rufus, you

Steve:

just got schemed of all your money.

Leif:

Well, he doesn't know that yet.

Steve:

He's so confident right now.

Leif:

Things are gonna be great, man. Trip. Triple

Leif:

that money. And what money? What money is he

Leif:

tripling?

Steve:

the. I.

Leif:

He sold the record.

Steve:

Sold the. Yeah. Which also

Steve:

go on tour, release a new album.

Steve:

Go on tour. There's a market.

Leif:

I mean, releasing a new album's easier said than done, but

Leif:

there's clearly a.

Steve:

Market for Lincoln Hawk. Right? So he could

Steve:

go on tour, boost the value of his

Steve:

catalog again. And you're right that doing an

Steve:

album is hard. More than it. Harder than it sounds. But it can

Steve:

be done. You know, go on the road. Go on.

Leif:

Took him 17 years to write one song.

Steve:

Okay, well,

Steve:

yeah.

Leif:

he also makes chili.

Steve:

He also makes chili

Steve:

and waffles, but Jenny's sick of the

Steve:

waffles.

Leif:

When Georgina finds out Blair was at the camp earlier,

Leif:

she decides to join Chuck for his cab ride back to the

Leif:

city. A dope beat drops as Gossip Girl

Leif:

closes out the episode.

Steve:

Yeah, I like that. I like oh, Blair.

Steve:

And again, the. The needle

Steve:

drops.

Leif:

The song. No, it's the same song from

Leif:

when they did I killed someone.

Steve:

Oh.

Leif:

the kills. You are a fever.

Steve:

Yes. Yeah, I remember now. Good

Steve:

throwback. Yeah.

Leif:

We close with a Gossip Girl monologue.

Leif:

Oh, dear queen, heed the words of a

Leif:

king. Look like an angel, talks like an

Leif:

angel. The devil in disguise.

Leif:

Of course, reference to the Elvis song.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

So what's coming next?

Steve:

I mean, Georgina's about to go head to head

Steve:

with Blair. Blair's trying to

Steve:

figure, you know, they're going to. Man, there's

Steve:

so much about to happen because the scheme's going to come

Steve:

unfolded. I think we may have skipped the part where

Steve:

Poppy comes running back in and

Steve:

says to Serena, oh, my God,

Steve:

like, I'm, I can't believe that Gabriel

Steve:

just packed up everything and left. So there is the question

Steve:

of is this again part of the

Steve:

scheme, or is Poppy now

Steve:

getting double cross. Getting. Doing a double cross,

Steve:

or did she get double crossed? So, like.

Steve:

So there is that bubble up

Steve:

in the air. I just know one thing's for sure. Rufus broke.

Leif:

At least he's got a rich girlfriend. Rub is.

Steve:

Yep. His rich girlfriend is gonna.

Leif:

And his kids already bought him a ring.

Steve:

Yeah. The thing that he can't pay

Steve:

back that he's gonna need to borrow money from his

Steve:

rub. His fiance, to pay it back to his kids.

Leif:

He said he's gonna give him a check. It's gonna bounce.

Steve:

From my dad.

Leif:

Go ahead and get into some segments.

Leif:

This week in fandom. we jumped into the wayback

Leif:

machine to check out the television without pity forums from

Leif:

2009. Hello there,

Leif:

Peabody here. And this is the wayback machine

Leif:

for traveling through time. And this is my boy

Leif:

Sherman. Speak, Sherman.

Steve:

Hello.

Leif:

Good boy. The biggest sentiment,

Leif:

Rufus.

Steve:

Bless your heart,

Steve:

but that's your heart. Oh.

Steve:

Oh, sweetie, you fought so hard for

Steve:

this.

Leif:

They like the Serena's taking an active role in her

Leif:

defense this season.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Sorry. I mean, at the end.

Steve:

At the end.

Leif:

Yeah. Ah. I think they might also. They also, they

Leif:

have seen the promo for next week, so they, they. I think they have

Leif:

some insight what's happening next week. I have

Leif:

not weirdly rooting against Rufus and

Leif:

Lily and hoping the money situation will blow them up for

Leif:

good.

Steve:

I mean, that tracks for the fandom. They're ruthless.

Leif:

Before Nate was just dull. Now he's a creepy

Leif:

asshole in addition to still being dull.

Steve:

Yeah. I'm hoping that Nate learns from this

Steve:

and is less creepy and controlling

Steve:

in the future. I'm hoping that this is just a knee

Steve:

jerk reaction to a situation and that

Steve:

he gets over this.

Leif:

So you think Nate and Blair are going to last then?

Steve:

I don't care if they do. I just,

Steve:

I didn't. I got the sense she was upset. I

Steve:

don't get the sense that she's necessarily ready

Steve:

to leave, but I think that it just kind of makes her

Steve:

torn a little more.

Leif:

Multiple people pointed out that Columbia has a requirement

Leif:

for freshmen to live in the dorms.

Steve:

Most colleges do,

Steve:

of course. Yeah, Here's m.

Steve:

here's my dorm that I am paying for

Steve:

and then here's the apartment I'm living in.

Leif:

Also, Murray Hill doesn't exactly

Leif:

make sense geographically.

Steve:

I don't know where Murray Hill is in relation to the two.

Leif:

So I did look at the map. Murray Hill is like

Leif:

midtown east of Bryant Park.

Leif:

NYU is, like southwest of the

Leif:

island, and Harlem is

Leif:

northwest. Or I mean Columbia is just south of

Leif:

Harlem. Northwest. The island.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

So they're both on the west side, but Murray Hill's on the east side.

Steve:

Yeah. And Blair hates Murray Hill.

Leif:

Yes. Georgina's

Leif:

entry was better than, the season last. People are

Leif:

excited to find out what she does when she gets back to nyc.

Steve:

Yeah, I'm, I'm actually intrigued about

Steve:

her right now.

Leif:

Let's move on over to episode

Leif:

grades. I thought this was a

Leif:

pretty good episode. They got

Leif:

almost everyone of the main cast

Leif:

into the same room at the party. The only ones not there

Leif:

were Dan, Vanessa, and Jenny.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And that, that's. So that's the only thing keeping it from an

Leif:

A. I just gave it an A minus because they couldn't

Leif:

get Dan involved.

Steve:

Yeah, I, I gave it a B plus.

Steve:

And I think the thing that really hurt it for

Steve:

me, as I mentioned way earlier, is

Steve:

the. Is the use of dramatic

Steve:

irony to let me know this was a scheme

Steve:

before it was unfolded as a scheme.

Steve:

I didn't want to know it was a scheme.

Leif:

I mean, A minus, B plus. Pretty close. So.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Leif:

On over to stockwatch. Going up.

Leif:

I had Gabriel and Poppy because their

Leif:

scheme seems to be working. Dan

Leif:

because, he was just,

Steve:

Was a good brother.

Leif:

Good, good, son. Jenny, for the same

Leif:

reason she was, you know, good, good sister and a good

Leif:

child. Severfus daughter. And

Leif:

also Chuck is, he definitely out schemed Nate

Leif:

on this one.

Steve:

Yeah. so I also had Gabriel and

Steve:

Poppy for. For the same reason that their scheme seems to be

Steve:

working. I also had Chuck

Steve:

because he outmaneuvered

Steve:

Nate in this and he

Steve:

just sort of kept his cool the entire

Steve:

time. I had Georgina going up for not

Steve:

sucking the way she did the last time she was

Steve:

on. I also had Jenny going up for

Steve:

being a sweet daughter. I did not have Dan going up because

Steve:

he also found out he's not going to Yale.

Steve:

Fair enough.

Leif:

Going down, I had Serena.

Steve:

Yep. Rufus.

Leif:

Obvious reasons we've already talked about. Lily because

Leif:

she also is getting played. And Nate for being

Leif:

a creepy, controlling.

Steve:

Yeah, I had Rupus and Serena

Steve:

both going down. I didn't. I did not have

Steve:

Lily because I don't think

Steve:

that, any investment she makes will be anything that

Steve:

she misses. I don't think this is

Steve:

gonna. I think she just bought it. She'll buy a sandwich with

Steve:

the money, so I don't think it'll affect her as much as it will

Steve:

Rufus.

Leif:

And, she also basically gave the endorsement

Leif:

for all those other people that are going to lose money as well.

Steve:

Oh, that's true.

Steve:

Okay, send her down. Yeah, because that's

Steve:

like, that is her stock is how. Oh,

Steve:

Lily. Fuck. Yeah. That's

Steve:

all I had going down. I left Nate in the middle.

Steve:

He was a controlling asshole. But I'm a Nate.

Steve:

Stan.

Leif:

Moving over, to best outfits.

Steve:

But here's the best outfits from M.

Steve:

The last episode we

Steve:

seen.

Leif:

For me, it was Chuck's purple suit with the purple

Leif:

bow tie and a pink shirt.

Steve:

And I also had a Chuck outfit. Mine was

Steve:

the velour tracksuit that he wore to play

Steve:

basketball. with the ascot to

Steve:

match. I loved that athletic wear.

Leif:

Anything to plug this week?

Steve:

Well, mostly just you can find me if it's

Steve:

still around. You can find my TikTok at Steve

Steve:

Marshon. that is also my Instagram.

Steve:

M A R C H I O N. And then you can find

Steve:

me at the Weed wizard on Blue

Steve:

Sky. And I don't really have

Steve:

much else that I'm promoting at this

Steve:

very time.

Leif:

For me, I am going to recommend the new Dexter

Leif:

original sin series. the casting is

Leif:

phenomenal.

Steve:

I've heard that It's.

Leif:

Go Birds. The Eagles are

going on to the, to the playoffs

Steve:

next week.

Leif:

Playing the Packers.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Rematch of week one.

Steve:

Yeah, I was thinking about that. That someone's. That

Steve:

someone's season is about to end the way it

Steve:

began. I'm super

Steve:

confident because we have a fantastic

Steve:

team, but I'm not going to be too cocky because Greene Bay also

Steve:

has a great team.

Leif:

They got a little banged up today.

Steve:

Did they? Greene Bay?

Leif:

Yeah, it's like, the receiver, Christian

Leif:

Watson's almost definitely done for the year, and

Leif:

love, hurt his throwing arm as well.

Steve:

Oh, no way. Although how many times are we going to

Steve:

hear love hurts between now?

Love hurts,

Leif:

Love sinks.
