Ed introduces SECD 2.0, an expanded approach to social, emotional, and character development that goes beyond traditional SEL competencies to include purpose, curiosity, and healthy skepticism.

With information available at our fingertips and young people constantly exposed to social media, influencers, pundits, politicians, and competing claims, students need more than the ability to absorb information. They need to know how to evaluate it, question its accuracy, consider who is delivering it, recognize potential agendas, and think for themselves.

Kim and Ed also explore the complexity of ethics and values. What happens when two important values conflict? Is honesty always more important than kindness? What happens when loyalty conflicts with accountability? Their conversation demonstrates why character development can't simply be reduced to a list of values students are expected to follow.

They also discuss the connection between social-emotional and character development and Mental Freedom®. Ed explains how greater self-awareness, empathy, decision-making, purpose, and curiosity can expand a person's ability to make intentional choices and reduce the barriers to Mental Freedom.

And what would happen if educators developed these same competencies themselves? Kim and Ed imagine schools where educators are better able to connect with students, understand their experiences, model emotional intelligence, and create environments where students can learn to think rather than simply learn information.
