You can't judge a book by its cover. But our
Evo Terra:podcasts are judged by a single episode -our most recent. It'd
Evo Terra:be better if we were judged by a collection of our best episodes.
Evo Terra:But how would we do that?
Evo Terra:Today’s episode is brought to you by Gumball, the premier
Evo Terra:marketplace to easily and efficiently buy host-read
Evo Terra:podcast ads.
Evo Terra:platform, connecting great podcasts with the best
Evo Terra:advertisers. Gumball takes away
Evo Terra:podcasters and advertisers alike by managing inventory schedules,
Evo Terra:providing easy and consistent ad script instructions, easy
Evo Terra:aircheck uploading, and ensuring payments are made in a timely
Evo Terra:fashion. Best of all, Gumball takes pride in offering the most
Evo Terra:podcaster-friendly terms as a standard, meaning more money
Evo Terra:directly flowing to the podcaster. As it should be!
Evo Terra:your show is pulling down more than 10,000 downloads per
Evo Terra:episode, you owe it to yourself to talk to Gumball at Gumball.fm
Evo Terra:to see how they can help you make even more money with your
Evo Terra:podcast. That’s Gumball.fm. And tell ‘em Evo sent you.
Evo Terra:Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me,
Evo Terra:Evo Terra.
Evo Terra:If you wanted to figure out your most popular episodes, how would
Evo Terra:you go about doing that? Now, you might be wondering why this
Evo Terra:is important? And, well, it's important for a for a number of
Evo Terra:reasons, I think. First is putting your best foot forward
Evo Terra:for brand new listeners. Podcasting's reliance on reverse
Evo Terra:chronological order listing of our episodes means that the
Evo Terra:newest episode is the episode that is heard most often by
Evo Terra:brand new people. And that may not be your best episode. Heck,
Evo Terra:it might not even be an episode that is indicative of what a
Evo Terra:good episode is for your podcast. It might not even be an
Evo Terra:episode of your podcast at all.
Evo Terra:If you knew which episodes were most popular for your listeners,
Evo Terra:you'd have a nice Start Here collection for brand new
Evo Terra:listeners. That'd be cool. Another idea would be assembling
Evo Terra:a collection to submit to awards competitions. Doing it with a
Evo Terra:single episode isn't great. Even if you are creating a
Evo Terra:customized, curated single episode that samples from other
Evo Terra:episodes of your show, it's not a good way to tell whether your
Evo Terra:podcast is good, bad, or indifferent. It's just not the
Evo Terra:right feel.
Evo Terra:However, if you had a collection of episodes - I don't know, say,
Evo Terra:three episodes, five episodes, ten episodes, whatever - that
Evo Terra:you could then submit to the awards committee, they, in turn,
Evo Terra:could make a much more informed decision on whether your
Evo Terra:podcast, the whole podcast, is worthy of an award or not.
Evo Terra:That also might encourage some innovation with the podcast
Evo Terra:listening apps out there. Just think how popular Best Of or
Evo Terra:Greatest Hits collections are for music. We could do the same
Evo Terra:thing for podcasts. We could go through, figure out which are
Evo Terra:the best episodes, and then give them to a brand new listener.
Evo Terra:That new listener then listens to your Best Of collection.
Evo Terra:Here's the cool part, when they get to the end of the Best Of
Evo Terra:collection, if they get all the way to the end, then their
Evo Terra:subscription automatically switches over to the main show
Evo Terra:feed. And they start picking up new episodes right away because
Evo Terra:now they're in. They went all the way through, they're
Evo Terra:invested. That'd be kind of cool.
Evo Terra:But back to my question, how would you go about doing that?
Evo Terra:Would you base it on downloads? Well, I suppose that's a start.
Evo Terra:I think we put way too much emphasis on downloads, and a
Evo Terra:goodly number of those downloads are automated. So I'm skeptical,
Evo Terra:but still, it's a start. In fact, earlier this week, I heard
Evo Terra:that some of the more forward-thinking podcast hosting
Evo Terra:companies are in early discussions to collect this
Evo Terra:information with, obviously, the podcaster's permission, clearly.
Evo Terra:But then somehow take that information of what the best of
Evo Terra:this feed is and then mark that episode inside of the RSS feed,
Evo Terra:which would, in turn, allow aggregators - think directories
Evo Terra:or apps - actually to do something with those marked
Evo Terra:episodes. Put them further up, highlight them in some way.
Evo Terra:Now, speaking of apps, they actually have better data than
Evo Terra:your podcast hosting company. They actually have play data,
Evo Terra:backup data, rewind and skip data, all of that stuff. So,
Evo Terra:perhaps, forward-thinking apps could use their own internal
Evo Terra:data and blend it with this information that these hosting
Evo Terra:companies are thinking of providing.
Evo Terra:But also, what about external factors for popularity of a
Evo Terra:podcast episode? Maybe, like quantity of shares across social
Evo Terra:media? That's doable, but it's rather processor intensive. So
Evo Terra:this might be a service that an existing social monitoring
Evo Terra:service could offer to podcasters. Though, it's going
Evo Terra:to be a challenge to associate the various links that get
Evo Terra:shared - the link to your page, the link to the media file for
Evo Terra:that episode. Is it a player created link? Is it a deep link
Evo Terra:to a directory that someone is actually sharing? Those would
Evo Terra:need to be normalized and rolled up together.
Evo Terra:I wonder what I missed? I know I missed a few ways we might
Evo Terra:figure out what is good and popular for a podcast. If you
Evo Terra:have ideas on that, please shoot me an email, I'm
Evo Terra:evo@simpler.media, and let me know. If you're a podcast
Evo Terra:service provider, I'd love to know what you would do with this
Evo Terra:data - how you could contribute to it or what you would do with
Evo Terra:it. If you knew what was most popular out of the podcast, what
Evo Terra:would you do with that information that would make your
Evo Terra:service better?
Evo Terra:No Boostagram Corner today, but you can change that for tomorrow
Evo Terra:and going forward by going to podcastpontifications.com/valueforvalue
Evo Terra:and choosing from any of the many options I have listed on
Evo Terra:that page. Probably too many options. Maybe there's a
Evo Terra:business opportunity there. Maybe someone could build a
Evo Terra:better Ways You Can Support the Podcaster plugin page, something
Evo Terra:along that line for podcasters to utilize.
Evo Terra:Anyhow, in the meantime, at that page I do have, which is way too
Evo Terra:busy - podcastpontifications.com/valueforvalue
Evo Terra:- you can use Venmo, BuyMeACoffee.com, and many other
Evo Terra:ways to provide some value back to me for the value of the
Evo Terra:content you receive from me.
Evo Terra:That's it. I shall be back tomorrow with yet another
Evo Terra:Podcast Pontifications.
Evo Terra:Cheers!
