Speaker:

Welcome back Bible people.

2

:

It is another edition of

the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

Today is June 30th, 2024.

4

:

And this is Sunday's edition.

5

:

Now, this is a lot of territory

that we're covering today.

6

:

So we're looking at second Chronicles

19, all the way through chapter 23,

7

:

second Chronicles 19 through chapter 23.

8

:

Now I've mentioned this resource

before, but I want to commend it to you

9

:

again, in case you're having difficulty

following some of the narrative.

10

:

I know that's hard.

11

:

You've got two parallel accounts

are mostly parallel with overlapping

12

:

characters and it's never.

13

:

In fact, we're about to cover

two Kings with the same name.

14

:

You've got your Horam.

15

:

And who are both Kings in

each respective kingdoms.

16

:

And so you have a Judean king named

and , and then you have an Israel,

17

:

king and Israeli king, there we go.

18

:

Named Isaiah and your Hora.

19

:

So it can get a bit confusing.

20

:

So I want to come into a book called.

21

:

A synoptic harmony of

Samuel Kings and Chronicles.

22

:

And what I'll do for you is I'll

put this in the show notes so that

23

:

you have a link to it on Amazon.

24

:

It's a couple of dollars, but

it's worth having in your arsenal.

25

:

As you seek to understand.

26

:

Who's ruling when and where and how that

fits with the corresponding material

27

:

in the either Chronicles or Kings.

28

:

And so this book has been enormously

helpful to me as I've been working for.

29

:

Understanding this, the section for

the podcast and helping you guys out.

30

:

I've also downloaded a few graphics

that have been helpful for me

31

:

to visually see who's ruling

and where they're ruling from.

32

:

And so what I'll do is I'll link

the book and I'll also put in

33

:

the graphics that I'm using.

34

:

Now.

35

:

Some of them have.

36

:

They're not precise the graphics there

they're meant to be a graphical depiction

37

:

of what you're reading in the story.

38

:

So it's not exactly.

39

:

Precise but they're very good.

40

:

They're very helpful.

41

:

Especially when you get to see

some of these, that show the

42

:

relationships between the Kings,

for instance, Jessebelle and Ahab.

43

:

They have three kids that are mentioned

and relevant to our text after Elia Jorah.

44

:

and a Isaiah.

45

:

And so you see some of these connections

and it's really helpful to see it there.

46

:

So I'm going to put

these in the show notes.

47

:

If you have any interest,

hopefully you do.

48

:

And you can find them there

and make good use of them.

49

:

The next time you jumped

into Kings and Chronicles.

50

:

Well, today is Sunday

and I have good news.

51

:

If you are from the compass

in north Texas church plant.

52

:

Not a planet anymore.

53

:

Are we?

54

:

We're?

55

:

We're a church.

56

:

If you're F if you're at the church

compass Bible church, north, Texas.

57

:

That's where PG is back in

the pulpit this morning.

58

:

So please don't miss it.

59

:

Welcome him back.

60

:

He is now old and decrepit.

61

:

He's 40 years old.

62

:

Please make sure to note

that when you see him.

63

:

If you see him with a cane or in a

wheelchair, just know this is par for

64

:

the course 40 years old, you hit it.

65

:

You're over the hill.

66

:

That's over.

67

:

All right.

68

:

Second Chronicles 19 through 23.

69

:

I'm totally joking.

70

:

40 is still super young in my book.

71

:

And even older than that, if you're

50, I still think you're pretty young.

72

:

Sprite 50 is a new 30, as they say.

73

:

Okay, second Chronicles.

74

:

Starting at chapter 19 while we're

finishing up the rain of : today.

75

:

And if you recall, we began covering

his reign in second Chronicles,

76

:

chapter 17, so 17 through 20

coverage, your high Shabbats rain.

77

:

We've already seen him interact

with a rehab, which is chapter

78

:

18 of second Chronicles.

79

:

And we saw that hopefully he

learned his lesson in that.

80

:

Well in chapter 19, we get to read about

some of the reforms that he institutes.

81

:

And.

82

:

Yeah, some of this comes

by way of Jay who's.

83

:

The son of This year.

84

:

Uh, he comes, bearing a word of the

Lord and he says, should you help the

85

:

wicked and love those who hate the Lord?

86

:

He's referring to his interaction

with a rehab in the Northern kingdom.

87

:

He saying, what were you doing?

88

:

That's not the way a good king should act.

89

:

He says, because of this wrath has

gone out against you from the Lord.

90

:

Nevertheless.

91

:

Some good as found in you

for you destroy the Ashraf.

92

:

Out of the land and you've

set your heart to seek God.

93

:

So there's a bit of a bit of criticism,

even though there's going to be

94

:

mercy, God showing him kindness.

95

:

And part of this in chapter 19 is

as how Jehoshaphat responds and

96

:

he's appointing judges, a kind

of Supreme court for the land.

97

:

So that there's justice in the land.

98

:

There's not blood guilt put upon them.

99

:

And then he appoints Levi's and

priests and heads of families of

100

:

the Lord to help decide these cases.

101

:

And so he's doing a lot of good

things and then he issues the command

102

:

at the very end of chapter 19.

103

:

He tells them deal courageously.

104

:

And may the Lord be with the upright.

105

:

And so you see some really good

reforms here that Jehoshaphat

106

:

institutes in first Chronicles.

107

:

Excuse me.

108

:

Second Chronicles chapter 19.

109

:

Second Chronicles chapter 20.

110

:

Jehoshaphat is encountering some

opposition, some resistance, the

111

:

Moabites and the Ammonites along with

this group called the mew Knights,

112

:

come against Jehoshaphat for battle.

113

:

Now these names should

be somewhat familiar.

114

:

These are close relatives

of the Israelites of Israel

115

:

and total and Judah as well.

116

:

And so they're being attacked

by, by distant family.

117

:

This is not a good situation.

118

:

Jehoshaphat was afraid

much like you would be.

119

:

If you saw that there was

enemies on your doorstep.

120

:

And look at how he

responds in verse three.

121

:

He was afraid and he set

his face to seek the Lord.

122

:

And he proclaimed a fast

throughout all Judea.

123

:

Now this is something we haven't

really talked much about fasting.

124

:

Where does this fit into

the Christian life today?

125

:

But Jehoshaphat.

126

:

In response to the imminent

threat, he's afraid he responds by

127

:

setting his face to seek the Lord.

128

:

And part of the way he does that is

by denying himself food so that he

129

:

can focus more intently on the Lord.

130

:

I think there's times for us to do this

as well as your Harsha fan is afraid.

131

:

And that's probably a good time.

132

:

I don't know about you, but there

are times in my life when I fast.

133

:

Almost incidentally because of

what's happening in my life.

134

:

There's some kind of stressor or some

kind of fear that's causing me to respond.

135

:

Um, I don't want to call it anxiety,

but there's a kind of anxiety there.

136

:

I naturally don't want to eat because

I'm focused on something else.

137

:

That's much more important to me.

138

:

I guess that's an, a sense of

what's happening when someone

139

:

fasts, but fascinating is just a

way for us to say, Lord, I really

140

:

want you to deliver on this.

141

:

God, I need you to intervene it.

142

:

I need you to do something about this.

143

:

That's what your hotshot does

and that's what you can do.

144

:

I think fasting is still a neglected

spiritual discipline today that

145

:

we could utilize to help sharpen

our spiritual sensibilities.

146

:

And maybe that's something you can re.

147

:

Uh, reintegrate into your life or

integrate for the first time into some

148

:

of your regular spiritual disciplines.

149

:

Jehoshaphat's response

is, is a good response.

150

:

And part of what we have here is the

recording of his prayer to the Lord.

151

:

And it is a beautiful prayer.

152

:

It has so many things that

are good and helpful to us.

153

:

Um, he does something that I think is

helpful for you to see in verse seven,

154

:

he says, did you not our God drive out

the inhabitants of this land before your

155

:

people Israel and give it forever to

the descendants of Abraham, your friend.

156

:

Um, Jehoshaphat's recalls and

rehearses God's prior deliverance.

157

:

And this is a form of not only

encouraging himself to remain faithful

158

:

to the Lord and steadfast, but also

calling out to the Lord and saying, do

159

:

you not remember, Lord, you did this.

160

:

Look how you did this before, and we're

trusting that you're going to do it again.

161

:

So he says in verse 12, I like

this, the last line of verse 12.

162

:

We do not know what to do.

163

:

But our eyes are on you and

maybe you're in that place.

164

:

What a good response that is.

165

:

We don't know what to do.

166

:

Gut.

167

:

But we're looking to you.

168

:

Today, thankfully, we're

not just looking in prayer.

169

:

We can look at his word.

170

:

We have the privilege and embarrassment

of riches, where we have the privilege

171

:

of having the Bible and so many

different translations and versions.

172

:

We may not know what to

do, but we can look to him.

173

:

In his word as we pray, what a great

thing that is, what a great privilege.

174

:

And so Judah stood before the Lord with

their little ones or wives or children.

175

:

It says here in verse 13, and the spirit

of the Lord comes upon you, Hazel.

176

:

The son of Zechariah, son

of benign us and of jail.

177

:

Send a mat tonight.

178

:

Naya a leave height of the sons of ASAP.

179

:

So this guy has got a good pedigree.

180

:

And then he responds on

behalf of guidance, says,

181

:

Hey, the battle's not yours.

182

:

It is the Lord's tomorrow.

183

:

Uh, go down against them and

they're going to come up this way.

184

:

So be prepared, but verse 17, you

will need not fight in this battle.

185

:

Stanford.

186

:

He says, stand for him and trust that I

will deliver you and surprise, surprise.

187

:

That's exactly what God does, but I want

you to see here in this in verse 21.

188

:

Notice how they respond.

189

:

They send the musicians ahead of

them into the battle and they're

190

:

singing the Chris Tomlin song.

191

:

Give thanks to the Lord for his

steadfast love endures forever, actually.

192

:

This is a callback to

first Chronicles,:

193

:

They began singing this song.

194

:

This is a song of David,

something that he wrote.

195

:

And they're still singing it today

as evidence of the fact that they

196

:

are faithful to Yahweh and y'all

we alone, they're trusting him so

197

:

much so that they're not putting

their . best military in front.

198

:

They're putting their best

musicians, which is interesting.

199

:

If I were a musician and

take a lot of courage.

200

:

I am a musician, I guess dig

a lot of courage to be in the

201

:

front lines of the battle.

202

:

, when you're facing an opponent that

has every desire to take you out.

203

:

But look what God does.

204

:

In verse 22, when they began to sing and

praise the Lord set an ambush against

205

:

these men, it was God himself who

intervenes on their behalf in response

206

:

to their praise in response to their

prayers, God himself, directly intervenes

207

:

such that they don't have to fight.

208

:

In verse 24.

209

:

It says when Judah came to the Watchtower

of the wilderness, they looked toward

210

:

the hoard and behold, there were

dead bodies lying on the ground.

211

:

None had escaped.

212

:

God effected a great

deliverance on their behalf.

213

:

And so the people go and take the spoil.

214

:

It takes days for them to do this.

215

:

They began to call the valley the valley

of Barakah it's the valley of blessing.

216

:

That's what that stands for.

217

:

And as, because that's where God

delivered them and blessed them.

218

:

So richly, they were richly rewarded for

their faith in Galloway's deliverance.

219

:

And what a good reminder for us.

220

:

To trust him, to trust him in such a way

that we pray that we praise that we go to

221

:

his word, that we remind God of his word.

222

:

And then when he does inevitably

deliver us in one way, shape or form.

223

:

We give him the praise that he's due.

224

:

That's a good reminder for us.

225

:

We ought to do that.

226

:

I don't know about what role

praise plays in your life, but

227

:

I hope it plays a larger role.

228

:

Than simply a Sunday morning.

229

:

It's a good thing for us.

230

:

It's a good thing for your

soul to be shaped and formed.

231

:

By the words that you hear sung and

the words that you personally sing.

232

:

But that would be a reminder to you

as you drive to and from the grocery

233

:

store to, and from the workplace.

234

:

Put on things that are going to help you.

235

:

The things that are going to shape you.

236

:

And things that you want in your

head and your heart, as the old

237

:

saying goes garbage in, garbage out.

238

:

Or godliness in godliness out.

239

:

Be sure that you're feeding a spirit

of praise as you go about your day.

240

:

Okay.

241

:

Jehoshaphat's rain ends in second

Chronicles, chapter 20 and all in all.

242

:

He does a great job.

243

:

He does make a few blunders and we've

already noticed some of those things, But

244

:

overall, his reign is commended by God.

245

:

Second Chronicles chapter 21.

246

:

Johor him steps in now.

247

:

He only is covered in chapter

21, but he has a bad rain.

248

:

He reigns for eight years.

249

:

But one of the things that you

find initially is that when he

250

:

ascends the throne and he secure.

251

:

He takes out all his brothers, all the

rivals to the throne are disposed of.

252

:

He was 32 years when he was,

when he became king and he

253

:

reigned for eight years.

254

:

And this is an evil reign.

255

:

Now scripture provides a reason

though for his awful rain.

256

:

And it says this in verse six.

257

:

He walked in the way of the Kings of

Israel as the house of Ahab had done

258

:

for the daughter of a Hab was his wife.

259

:

Remember when we were talking about

Jehoshaphat having a marriage Alliance

260

:

with Ahab while this is it right here.

261

:

And the daughter of Ahab

was his wife, Joe Horn.

262

:

And so now you have the

influence of the Northern kingdom

263

:

infiltrating the Southern kingdom.

264

:

And of course this was evil

in the sight of the Lord.

265

:

Um, he leads exactly as you would expect.

266

:

He institutes idolatry.

267

:

He's not doing, he's not doing

what God wants him to do.

268

:

Well, interestingly enough, Elijah, the

prophet intervenes, he sends a letter.

269

:

And says, thus says the Lord God, the God

of David, your father, because you've not

270

:

walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat, your

father or the ways of EISA king of Judah.

271

:

But I've walked in the way of the Kings

of Israel and of entice Judah and in,

272

:

and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to.

273

:

And to idolatry, let's call it that as

the house of Ahab led Israel into that.

274

:

And also you have killed your brothers of

your father's house who were better than

275

:

you behold, the Lord will bring a great

plague on your people, your children,

276

:

your wives, and all your possessions.

277

:

And so.

278

:

He ends his reign in a,

in a very unhelpful way.

279

:

He's got some kind of disease

which ate away at him.

280

:

As you see here in verse 15 is

have some kind of bowel disease.

281

:

And the Lord also stirred up

the Philistines against him.

282

:

Um, and so you have this.

283

:

You have.

284

:

Internal issues with his body.

285

:

You have external issues in the kingdom.

286

:

And low and behold, one of his sons

Jehovah has, who's also named a Jose.

287

:

Isaiah.

288

:

Uh, is the only one left in the kingdom.

289

:

Now this is important because if

you took out all of his kin, then

290

:

you would not have a Davidic ruler

ascending the throne, but as it

291

:

is, God preserved, your Whoah has.

292

:

Again, it's called And

chapter 22 verse one.

293

:

Well, as the Lord would have it, he

struggles for two years and he dies

294

:

from this bowel disease and great agony.

295

:

It says here, and the people were

glad that he departed because he

296

:

departed with no one's regret and

they buried him in the city of David,

297

:

but not in the tomb of the Kings.

298

:

Remember how important that was?

299

:

This was a dishonorable death.

300

:

Second Chronicles chapter 22, then.

301

:

his son.

302

:

Who's also called Jehovah

has a few verses earlier.

303

:

He ascends the throne.

304

:

And he reigns for one year.

305

:

So we've got nine, all of

nine verses dedicated to him.

306

:

Uh, but he walks in the ways

of the house of Ahab and.

307

:

No notice this scripture provides

a reason for this for his mother,

308

:

was his counselor in doing wickedly.

309

:

He did what was evil in

the sight of the Lord.

310

:

As the house of Ahab had done

for after the death of his

311

:

father, they were his counsel.

312

:

There's.

313

:

To his undoing.

314

:

And so a has.

315

:

As I as mom, you remember who she is?

316

:

Atha Elia.

317

:

It's going to be important in a

few verses here, but ASI has got

318

:

evil influences, provoking him

and encouraging him to do evil.

319

:

And of course works against him.

320

:

We're going to read more about him when we

get to second Kings, but just notice here,

321

:

this is not a good situation once more.

322

:

And he goes to the Northern kingdom

to check on his buddy up there and God

323

:

decrees through the life or through

the work of Jay who the son of Nimkee.

324

:

that he would destroy not only

Ahab's house, but also Isaiah.

325

:

So ASI.

326

:

N a hub.

327

:

Our Ahab's house rather are dealt with

through Jay, who will read more about him.

328

:

And a couple of days when we get to

second Kings again, but just notice.

329

:

His rain here, bad rain.

330

:

We're only talking about

the Kings of Judah here.

331

:

At the Leia.

332

:

When she realizes that her son is dead.

333

:

She disposes of everybody in the house of

Judah, belonging to the family of David.

334

:

Bad news.

335

:

Once again, the line

of David is threatened.

336

:

And God's faithfulness and his promises

seem to be a topsy-turvy hear or.

337

:

God's faithfulness and his promises

seem to be potentially negated by

338

:

this action, but verse 11, Jehovah.

339

:

Beathard Yehoshua BIA, depending on

what pronunciation you're looking for.

340

:

The end of Joe Ash.

341

:

Finds this young man, he's probably

about a year old at this point.

342

:

Finds him.

343

:

And then hides him with

the help of her husband.

344

:

Jehoiada the priest.

345

:

And so AF Elia.

346

:

Uh, sends the throne illegitimately,

but she's ascending the throne.

347

:

Not at not a Davidic king.

348

:

She's dealing with thrown at this point.

349

:

And then her sister-in-law , Joe

hotshot, beef hides, Joe Ash,

350

:

the true heir to the throne.

351

:

For about seven years.

352

:

Second Chronicles 23.

353

:

In the seventh year, Jehovah to the

priest takes courage and he begins to

354

:

tell people what he has in store here.

355

:

And he's got one of the Davidic rulers.

356

:

He's been hiding him.

357

:

And now he's saying, look, we need

to come together and we're going to

358

:

make a covenant together and we're

going to bring this guy to the throne.

359

:

And so he does that.

360

:

He brings in leaders and Levi's, he

brings all sorts of heads of households.

361

:

And then he tells him

what they're going to do.

362

:

And they all agreed.

363

:

This is the right plan.

364

:

We're going to put Joe Ash on the throne.

365

:

And they proclaim him king and

Jehovah and his sons anointed him

366

:

and they said long live the king

will, of course, atha ly hears this.

367

:

She's not happy about this.

368

:

And she cries treason.

369

:

Interesting because she didn't

see it as treasonous when she

370

:

killed everybody else who.

371

:

It was a potential rival to the throne.

372

:

And then Jehovah and the priest

and all the captains, they gather

373

:

her and they don't put her to

death in the house of the Lord.

374

:

They take her to a different spot.

375

:

They kill her there.

376

:

They install Joe Ash as king.

377

:

And Joe Hoya takes the leader.

378

:

Cause remember Joe Ash he's

a young man at this point.

379

:

He was seven years old when he

began to reign, according to

380

:

second Chronicles, chapter 24.

381

:

So he's a very young man.

382

:

It was about a year old give or

take when he was initially hidden.

383

:

And so Jehovah is kind of

functioning as the Kings.

384

:

Greatest counselor, the Kings protector,

that Kings adviser, and perhaps

385

:

much more as he was a young man.

386

:

And so he makes a covenant between

the king and the people that they're

387

:

going to be, the Lord's people.

388

:

And they took out some of the idolaters,

including Matan the priest of bail.

389

:

Uh, and he installs Watchmen and he's

just putting everything in place.

390

:

He's setting things up well, And

under his leadership under his

391

:

influence, Joe Ash does really well.

392

:

But that's a cliffhanger for you.

393

:

Cause that's not always the case.

394

:

Well, as second Chronicles, 23 ends,

it says all the people of the land

395

:

rejoiced and the city was quiet after

It had been put to death with the sword.

396

:

People were joyous when there's righteous

leaders and people lament and moan.

397

:

When there's unrighteous leaders.

398

:

Did you happen to watch a debate?

399

:

A couple of nights ago.

400

:

I hope he did, or at least

I hope you saw some recaps.

401

:

If there's not something that

hasn't already encouraged

402

:

you to pray for your leaders.

403

:

I don't know what

else it's going to take.

404

:

Scripture commands you to do this.

405

:

That's probably a helpful thing, but

you should feel a burden to pray for

406

:

our nation to pray for our people.

407

:

Clearly.

408

:

We need all the help we can get, hopefully

watching some of these Kings rise and

409

:

fall of the mistakes that they've made,

the good things that they did encourages

410

:

you to pray mightily for the people that

God installs in leadership positions.

411

:

I hope you do that today.

412

:

Tomorrow.

413

:

Hope you.

414

:

You find some encouragement at

church to do the same thing.

415

:

But that's all I got for today.

416

:

Thank you guys so much for joining me.

417

:

I hope you have a great day at

church and I look forward to

418

:

seeing you tomorrow for another

edition of the daily Bible podcast.
