Speaker:So basically they have the Olympics, which is so exciting for Meanjin.
Speaker:And then they were all like, where are we going to put the stadium for the Olympics, for the opening ceremony?
Speaker:And they were going to use the Gabba.
Speaker:And then it's like really old.
Speaker:So like they can't use it.
Speaker:And then the government commissioned like a...
Speaker:Massive report into like, what's the best place we can put this stadium.
Speaker:And the report was like, put it somewhere else.
Speaker:Don't rebuild the Gabba, build a new one elsewhere.

Speaker:Stephen miles, the premier of Queensland turned around and was like, I reject it.
Speaker:We're going to rebuild the Gabba, which is really bad because then people can't like play sport and stuff.

Speaker:And also apparently it's going to cost like 3 billion to rebuild.
Speaker:And it would also just cost 3 billion to make a new one.

Speaker:You know, when people say billion to things, I'm always like, wow, that is so much money, but I can never gauge like what, like a big project will cost.

Speaker:So, uh, in more sports news, there's an AFL team for Tasmania, which is apparently a big deal cause they haven't had one and I really liked their name.

Speaker:So they were going really cheap so that you would book Ubers instead of taxis and then make the taxi business go out of business.

Speaker:- And then it's just Uber being the only choice.

Speaker:- And basically they got in trouble for it and they're having to pay out millions of dollars to taxi drivers across Australia.

Speaker:whilst they're in this hubba bubba that they get to also bring me back to Uber because famously I'm actually banned from Uber. What? Have I not told you this story? Probably. Okay. Is this why you Didi all the time? This is why I Didi because I literally- I thought it was just a cultural thing.
Speaker:And now I can't even Didi because I don't know why the app store won't let me download apps anymore on my phone. But basically I am banned from Uber because when I was in my Euro-like-ho era,
Speaker:I was dating this guy who worked at Uber. But I was in Portugal. I wasn't the vibe at the time to see this man again. I was coming back to Australia. And then he had put in his Uber account into my phone when we were going home late night because his phone had died and I had no money to get us home basically. And he was like, "No, you can just have that." I was like, "Okay, great. Sounds good."
Speaker:Anyways, we canoodle, we have fun, whatever. I leave back to Australia. Obviously-
Speaker:I'm not talking to this man. We're not in a long distance relationship or whatever.
Speaker:But I am tied to this man because I still happen to have his Uber account in my phone.
Speaker:And for a long time, I didn't have my license. And so I said, "Let me just use this man's Uber account." And so I just kept using his Uber account for ages. And then he found out as one does. But okay, it's fine because he gets free Ubers. It wasn't like I was eating out of his money all right it was connected to like the companu
Speaker:And then I just see Ryan's face and he's looking at me and I feel like I've committed a crime,
Speaker:but I haven't.
Speaker:And then...
Speaker:It was in Portugal, you guys.
Speaker:No, it's a different time.
Speaker:Everything's legal in Portugal.

Speaker:And then so I used it for like six months, basically.
Speaker:And then he went ahead and like cancelled that Uber account, but he also, to be petty,
Speaker:he found my Uber account and he cancelled mine too.
Speaker:This is really dumb, but I used to tell this story a little differently.
Speaker:I said that because I ghosted him, he found my Uber and canceled it for me.
Speaker:But the reality is, it's my fault.
Speaker:It's entirely my fault, but I like to change narratives.

Speaker:And I think that's something that algorithms take away from us.

Speaker:But I think the algorithms are learning because TikTok is also promoting 10-minute videos,

Speaker:And everyone says that YouTube is coming back and the YouTube essay is really having its moment or will have its moment this year.
Speaker:YouTube is massively in.
Speaker:I saw a really interesting take because TikTok is kind of flopping in the US for a couple of reasons.
Speaker:First of all, they've been really pushing TikTok shop in the US, which nobody likes.
Speaker:And they're also about to be banned, but we'll talk about that in a second.
Speaker:But basically, the way TikTok's been thinking about themselves is like as a digital platform with the assumption that everyone will just stay there, whereas what YouTube really nailed is that they're not a platform, they're a culture, they're a community.
Speaker:And so the way they build their product has to be like keeping full awareness of the people who use it and catering to them because without your creators, you are nothing.
Speaker:It's disappointing because Tik Tok has...
Speaker:that same community sense to it, right?
Speaker:It definitely has like a vibe, a culture to it.
Speaker:YouTube has that because of the people up top.
Speaker:Tik Tok has it despite the people up top.

Speaker:It's fascinating how like Tik Tok has been so user hostile the whole time.
Speaker:Like the way you have to use like "unaliving" and all those other euphemisms.

Speaker:Um, but yeah, anywho, so they're going to get shut down soon.

Speaker:to buy TikTok, which I found out that it's only like less.
Speaker:10% of TikTok users are from America though. So it's like not that big of a deal, I guess.
Speaker:Well, so interestingly in the news recently, everyone's been like TikTok's dying because Instagram's had the most, the highest daily downloads of all the apps, but that's because TikTok's banned in India and has been banned since 2020. And India, I don't know if you're aware of this, Simran, is a massive market. There's a lot of people in India.
Speaker:That's crazy.
Speaker:And so, you know, you just get people in India downloading Instagram and it will bump up.
Speaker:But I think it'd be quite sad if we lose TikTok because I feel like as much as TikTok has criticisms, you know, people also criticize it for being too pro-Palestine, but it's because I think their algorithms are really tuned to like giving people what they want and people want pro-Palestine content because free Palestine.
Speaker:You're so right, but I don't think it'll be banned here in Australia.
Speaker:but I
Speaker:think if it dies in the US
Speaker:It will suffer here because those creators will just move to Instagram and move to YouTube shorts. Yeah, and then it's like well Why don't we just?
Speaker:Move there also. Yeah, that's fair. Yeah. I do wonder what will happen to the culture on tik-tok without it Like I wonder what types of conversations we'll be able to have. Yeah
Speaker:Suddenly Australia becomes the dominant culture on tik-tok. Well, I wonder if it will because everything is very America centric
Speaker:You know culture in general is very America centric and I wonder now that they're not part of the conversation on an app
Speaker:Will that mean that like another country will dominate that or will it mean that we'll just shift surely? It'll be a British

Speaker:But yeah, I think it's it'll be a loss for media diversity, yeah, or will it be again?
Speaker:Well, then all the apps we use will be meta. Oh true, but I mean [laughing]

Speaker:- But I mean, like, will it be a gain in terms of diversity on the apps?
Speaker:Like the content itself, the content diversity, I guess.
Speaker:- No, because Instagram has been developing this feature where it'll be default turned on and it'll hide political content.
Speaker:And the way they define political content is anything referencing social issues.

Speaker:- And it's like, well, the people who reference social issues are the ones marginalized by social issues.

Speaker:I think it's not good.
Speaker:Even, you know, threads, owned by Meta.

Speaker:Tell me, you know how like you can go to any website in any web browser and access it.

Speaker:Mastodon is like that for a social network.
Speaker:So you can use any app to access any profile, which is hosted on any social network within what's called the Fediverse.
Speaker:And so they're trying to build threads to tap into that.
Speaker:But it's going to take like probably another year is what they've said,
Speaker:because it's a big undertaking for them because threads is already so massive.
Speaker:But that'll be really exciting to like have like
Speaker:open social network because you'll be able to follow people who aren't on threads on threads.
Speaker:Interesting.
Speaker:And people not on threads will be able to follow and talk to people on threads.
Speaker:I don't know how that works, but the end product seems interesting.
Speaker:It's like email, but not like email, right? Because I'm not on Gmail,
Speaker:but I can email you on Gmail, you know? It'll be like that.
Speaker:But do you have to be in a meta app though?
Speaker:No. No, it's going to be completely open, which is so exciting.
Speaker:Is there such a thing as a non-meta app?
Speaker:Once, I mean, yeah.
Speaker:Currently, not really, but that's the plan.
Speaker:It'll be good to get a little bit more diversity out there.

Speaker:I love Find My Friends.
Speaker:And I just don't get it.

Speaker:It's like one of my top apps on my phone.

Speaker:I have like 20 people on there.

Speaker:You know how we talked about like nostalgia with technology?

Speaker:You want to be in the know with your friends a lot.
Speaker:Your direct friendships, not like your Facebook friends energy.
Speaker:But at the same time, should we know so much about our friends?
Speaker:Well, it's kind of like I wish I lived so close to my friends that I could just see them all the time.
Speaker:time. But I unfortunately do not.
Speaker:And so, as I look at their silly little bubbles moving around the map, I feel closeness with them.
Speaker:Oh, that's very lovely. A little concerning, but really lovely. Like, are we having parasocial relationships with our own friends, then?
Speaker:No. I don't know. I think it's really cute because I can just see where they are. And sometimes, like, you know, earlier this morning, I was like, "Look, one of our mutual friends is like currently 200 meters away." And I'm like, "We could meet up with them for lunch."
Speaker:It's so exciting knowing that. I think everyone got so scared of Snap Map, but I really think Snapchat was on something.
Speaker:Well, I feel like Find My Friends is the adult version of Snapchat and Maps, you know?
Speaker:Well, because nobody uses Snapchat anymore, except for, you know.
Speaker:I use Snapchat.
Speaker:What do you use Snapchat for?
Speaker:Feeling young again, to be honest. Because the young people do be using Snapchat.
Speaker:But who are you snapping?

Speaker:I don't know, people. I feel like people in other countries use Snapchat a lot.
Speaker:Look, the thing that shocks me about Snapchat, as a social media girly, is Snapchat is one of the biggest social networks out there.
Speaker:And it is massive amongst teenagers. I don't get it.
Speaker:I don't know what they're doing there.
Speaker:I did get it, but then it overwhelmed me, I guess.
Speaker:Well, it was massive for us, but then Instagram just like... ate everything.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And here we are.
Speaker:Today, Ryan called me. Like, just on the phone.
Speaker:I love calling people.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:No, I really do.
Speaker:Because you know what I'll do? I'll open my... find my friends, look at where all my friends are, figure out who's at home, and I'm like, "You can get a call from me." And I'll just call them.

Speaker:Yeah, yeah. Oh, and then also like when you're organizing to meet up with someone.
Speaker:Like, I was checking how far away you were from arriving today.

Speaker:It's because I like to lie.
Speaker:So I like to say to a person, if I'm still at home, that I'm 10 minutes away, you know?
