Speaker:

Welcome to the Hall of Teams, the podcast where sports legends live again, I'm your

Speaker:

host, Kirk Jensen, and for this episode, we visit a city unlike any other, a place

Speaker:

where the mountains touch the sea, where art and defiance share the same skyline.

Speaker:

A place where rhythm of life sounds like a guitar, and the color of

Speaker:

passion is painted blaugrana.

Speaker:

This is Barcelona, a city that dreams in motion.

Speaker:

From the shadow of Gotti's towers to the roar of the crowd, One

Speaker:

symbol stands above them all.

Speaker:

Here, football isn't a game, it's a language.

Speaker:

It's belonging, and at its center stands, a cathedral of sport camp New.

Speaker:

In this episode we honor a club that became the voice of a people,

Speaker:

the pride of a culture and the soul of a city as the Hall of teams

Speaker:

proudly welcomes FC Barcelona.

Speaker:

In early 2007, I went to Barcelona for business meeting

Speaker:

with Joanne Francesco Prial.

Speaker:

One night he took me to a match at

Speaker:

Camp New Barcelona against racing Santander.

Speaker:

I had seen great stadiums before, but nothing like this.

Speaker:

The air itself seemed alive, filled with flags the size of city blocks

Speaker:

and flares glowing red in the stands.

Speaker:

As we climbed the ramp inside upward to our seats, I felt a deep rumble around me.

Speaker:

At first, I thought it was a subway passing outside the concrete walls,

Speaker:

but when we stepped out of the tunnel, I realized it was the crowd.

Speaker:

90,000 voices shaking the stadium like an earthquake.

Speaker:

The experience was unforgettable.

Speaker:

Messe had just started playing a couple years earlier, sleek, fast, and ran

Speaker:

with the ball, like it moved with him without being touched even as a layman

Speaker:

to football, I could see he was special.

Speaker:

I remember asking, who's that player playing down the wing.

Speaker:

Joanne smiled and said, that's Messi.

Speaker:

He's good, and he's going to be really good.

Speaker:

Chapter one Origins, the birth of Bara

Speaker:

FC Barcelona was founded in the winter of 1899 by Swiss student

Speaker:

hans Gmer, also known as Joanne GOPer.

Speaker:

He placed a newspaper ad in Ade Los Deportes calling for fellow football

Speaker:

lovers to join him to start a team.

Speaker:

11 men answered and a meeting at Gazi Sole Football Club.

Speaker:

Barcelona was born.

Speaker:

47 days later, Barcel played its first match.

Speaker:

Gapper went on to become the club's first captain and leading figure

Speaker:

scoring 126 goals in 55 matches.

Speaker:

He also later went on to service

Speaker:

president multiple times from the start.

Speaker:

Barza was more than a pastime.

Speaker:

It became a meeting place for Catalent's, a symbol of pride and belonging.

Speaker:

Mper chose Blue and Garnet Ana, inspired by his old Swiss team, FC Basel.

Speaker:

These colors would come to represent the soul of Catalonia itself.

Speaker:

By 1909, they moved into their first ground camp.

Speaker:

Kera Industria, nicknamed Lara The Spitball.

Speaker:

it held just 6,000 fans, but it was the first stadium in Spain with grandstands.

Speaker:

and what began with 11 Friends was already becoming a movement

Speaker:

Chapter two, the Scandal of 1943

Speaker:

In 1943 under the shadow of General Francisco Franco's Dictatorship Football

Speaker:

in Spain was no longer just a game.

Speaker:

It was politics, emotion.

Speaker:

even the Copa Del General Ismo Spain's cup competition carried

Speaker:

the weight of fear and authority.

Speaker:

Barcelona had the defeated Al Madrid three nil at home in the

Speaker:

first leg of the semi-final.

Speaker:

For the people of Catalonia, it was more than a victory.

Speaker:

It was pride whispered in defiance,

Speaker:

but in Franco, Spain, even whispers were dangerous.

Speaker:

Before the second leg in Madrid,

Speaker:

the entire team was summoned to the office of the director of State Security.

Speaker:

officials reminded them of their duty, not to their club, not to

Speaker:

Catalonia, but to the regime.

Speaker:

What followed remains one of the darkest days in football history.

Speaker:

On June 13th, 1943 at Martin Stadium, Barcelona

Speaker:

took the field surrounded by hostility soldiers stood along the sidelines.

Speaker:

Fans hurled insult coins, even stones.

Speaker:

And when the final whistle blew the scoreboard, read

Speaker:

11 one to Madrid midfielder,

Speaker:

Joseph Esola later said "It was impossible to play.

Speaker:

We had no choice." The press was censored.

Speaker:

The match was celebrated as a triumph for Franco Spain, a show of dominance over

Speaker:

Catalonia, but among the cata in people, the meaning was far different that day.

Speaker:

Barcelona learned that football could be more than victory, it could be voice.

Speaker:

When words are forbidden, the scoreboard becomes your statement.

Speaker:

And even in defeat the club's, defiance became legend.

Speaker:

the match of 1943 was lost,

Speaker:

but the spirit of Barcelona was never beaten.

Speaker:

Trivia from the hall, the Crest, and Catalonia.

Speaker:

The Bar crest

Speaker:

is more than design.

Speaker:

It is declaration at its heart.

Speaker:

Lies a football, the game that unites above it.

Speaker:

The Red Cross of St. George, protector of Catalonia.

Speaker:

Beside it, the four stripes of ra, the ancient flag of the region.

Speaker:

Each color, each symbol carries a story of faith, of identity, and of defiance.

Speaker:

When Spain fell under the rule of general Francisco Franco.

Speaker:

The language of Catalonia was silenced.

Speaker:

Its flag was forbidden.

Speaker:

Even the club's name was changed to Castile Club de Football Barcelona.

Speaker:

But repression could not erase what the crest represented inside camp.

Speaker:

Knew football became more than sport, it became a sanctuary.

Speaker:

Tens of thousands filled the terraces.

Speaker:

Not just a cheer, but to breathe freely.

Speaker:

Every chant, every flag, every goal.

Speaker:

It became a quiet act Rebellion.

Speaker:

As poet

Speaker:

jess Maria de Bagga wrote "At Camp Nou we spoke the language of football, but in

Speaker:

truth, we spoke the language of freedom."

Speaker:

The bar of Crest is not a logo, it is a flag.

Speaker:

One carried by generations who refused to be silent.

Speaker:

Chapter three, the Dream Team

Speaker:

In 1973, a Dutchman with vision stepped into Catalonia and changed

Speaker:

the course of Barcelona forever.

Speaker:

His name

Speaker:

was Johan Krei, a world class forward from Ajax.

Speaker:

elegant, yet rebellious.

Speaker:

He brought with him a footballing philosophy that

Speaker:

would reshape not just a team.

Speaker:

About an identity.

Speaker:

Roy didn't just play for Bara, he understood it.

Speaker:

He saw in its people the same defiance he carried in his own soul.

Speaker:

When he led Barcelona to their first league title in 14 years,

Speaker:

two decades later, Croy returned this time as manager to build what

Speaker:

would become known as the dream Team

Speaker:

at its heart, was a young midfielder named Pep Gudelia.

Speaker:

Behind him stood Ronald Coleman, the Dutch enforcer on the Wings.

Speaker:

Michael Waldrop the Danish artist, and upfront Harol OV Pure Fire.

Speaker:

Between 1991 and 1994, Barcelona lifted four consecutive Liga titles, and in

Speaker:

1992, their first European Cup at Wembley, the theater and Cathedral of football.

Speaker:

Roy's philosophy was simple possession, precision and beauty.

Speaker:

"Playing football is very simple."

Speaker:

He said, "But playing simple football, is the hardest thing there is."

Speaker:

He taught Bara to think with the ball, not chase it, to move

Speaker:

as one, not as 11, to win, not through power, but through purity.

Speaker:

His ideas became the DNA of Barcelona,

Speaker:

A legacy carried forward by Gudo himself who had one day perfect the system,

Speaker:

his mentor created Kroy, gave Barcelona a style, a soul, and a promise that

Speaker:

football when played beautifully.

Speaker:

can transcend sport itself.

Chapter four, laia The School of Greatness.

Speaker:

Laia translated to the farmhouse.

Speaker:

was founded in 1979 just beside Camp New.

Speaker:

A simple two story building used once to house construction apprentices was

Speaker:

transformed into something far greater, a home for dreams from its narrow halls.

Speaker:

Came a heartbeat of the club

Speaker:

young players came from Spain, Africa, south America.

Speaker:

they arrived to learn not just how to play, but how to become

Speaker:

bar some men inside its walls.

Speaker:

Football's met philosophies, coaches taught discipline, respect, and humility.

Speaker:

Mornings had studies, evenings ended with gratitude.

Speaker:

It was more than an academy, it was a way of life.

Speaker:

Pep Guardia once said,

Speaker:

" "Barça is not about winning.

Speaker:

It's about how we win."

Speaker:

That idea defined La Macia.

Speaker:

Every pass had purpose.

Speaker:

Every movement had meaning.

Speaker:

from 1979 to 2009, 440 youngsters left their homes and families

Speaker:

to stay at the academy.

Speaker:

About half of them from Catalonia and the rest came from other regions of the

Speaker:

Kingdom of Spain and beyond, including Cameroon, Senegal and Argentina.

Speaker:

Of those 440 40 made it into Barcelona's first team.

Speaker:

by 2010.

Speaker:

La Macia achieved the unimaginable.

Speaker:

For the first time in history, all three Bo Andor finalists, Lionel Messe,

Speaker:

Andre Anesa, and Xavier Hernandez were graduates of the same academy.

Speaker:

One building three Legends countless lessons.

Speaker:

Lamas approved that greatness can be grown, not bought.

Speaker:

It showed the world that the truest victories are not signed.

Speaker:

They are raised

Speaker:

trivia from the Hall Camp News Hidden Chapel.

Speaker:

Few fans know behind the player's tunnel at camp knew hidden away

Speaker:

from the noise and the light.

Speaker:

Stan's, a small chapel built in 1958.

Speaker:

It is dedicated to the Virgin Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia.

Speaker:

And for decades, it has been a place of silence in a world

Speaker:

of thunder, A moment of calm.

Speaker:

Before 90,000 voices rise before many of Barcelona's greatest matches.

Speaker:

Players have stopped here for a brief prayer or quiet reflection.

Speaker:

Tracing the sign of the cross and yesterday bowing his head, Al

Speaker:

standing still with his eyes closed Even inside football's greatest

Speaker:

cathedral, there is space for faith.

Speaker:

A reminder that before every roarer there is stillness, and before

Speaker:

every legend there is ritual.

Speaker:

Chapter five, the Messe Era.

Speaker:

Lionel Andre Messe was born in Rosario Argentina in 1987.

Speaker:

The third of four children in a tight-knit working class family.

Speaker:

His father, Jorge, worked in a steel factory.

Speaker:

his mother Celia, part-time at a magnet workshop.

Speaker:

Their neighborhood was modest.

Speaker:

In the dusty streets, Messe found his world with a ball at his feet.

Speaker:

The boy, everyone called Leo, spent hours dribbling past

Speaker:

brothers, cousins, even walls.

Speaker:

And by the age of five, he was playing for Grandly, a small local club,

Speaker:

coached by his father, his grandmother, Celia, was his greatest supporter.

Speaker:

Walking him to games and encouraging his quiet confidence.

Speaker:

Messe would later say,

Speaker:

"I play for her still.

Speaker:

Every goal is for my grandmother."

Speaker:

In 2000, he arrived in Barcelona with a dream too big for his frame.

Speaker:

He was 13 shy, barely five feet tall.

Speaker:

But when Lionel Messe touched a football, the world seemed to slow down after a

Speaker:

trial, youth director Carlos Resach, saw genius, the kind that comes once

Speaker:

a lifetime, but there was hesitation, Treatment for a growth condition would be

Speaker:

costly and the club hesitated to commit.

Speaker:

Finally, in December, Carlos decided he could wait no longer for the club's

Speaker:

approval, so in a small mosca, he reached for the nearest thing at hand.

Speaker:

a napkin, and wrote the words that would change football forever.

Speaker:

Under my responsibility, we will sign the player Lionel Messe,

Speaker:

provided we honor the agreed terms.

Speaker:

that napkin now framed and kept in a bank vault in Pandora

Speaker:

became a symbol of belief.

Speaker:

The faith of one man in a boy whose talent defied.

Speaker:

Reasoned.

Speaker:

It remains one of the most valuable pieces of paper in sport.

Speaker:

Mess.

Speaker:

Enter La Mess.

Speaker:

Learn the language of barza, humility, movement, precision, and respect.

Speaker:

Ronald Dino already a store became his mentor.

Speaker:

"This boy," he said, will be better than me.

Speaker:

In 2004, at just 17 Messe made his debut for the first team against as Espanol,

Speaker:

the youngest ever, to wear the shirt.

Speaker:

At that time.

Speaker:

From that day forward, a legend began to take shape.

Speaker:

His left foot painted poetry across every pitch.

Speaker:

He played, not for applause, but for joy.

Speaker:

Over 17 seasons, he led Barcelona to 10 LA League of Titles, four Champions League

Speaker:

trophies, and a record seven balling doors

Speaker:

through it all.

Speaker:

Mees Anchor was his family.

Speaker:

He married his childhood sweetheart from Rio.

Speaker:

And together they raised three children Barcelona was his second family.

El Klasko was born in 1902 when the two clubs first met in a cup competition.
