Speaker:

Les Miserable by Victor Hugo

Speaker:

chapter six Father

Speaker:

Faucheleva

Speaker:

one morning, Monsignor Madeleine was passing through

Speaker:

an unpaved alley of M sur m m.

Speaker:

He heard a noise and saw a group some distance

Speaker:

away. He approached

Speaker:

an old man named Father Fauchelevent had

Speaker:

just fallen beneath his cart, his horse having

Speaker:

tumbled down. This Fauchelevent

Speaker:

was one of the few enemies whom Monsieur Madeleine had at that

Speaker:

time. When Madeleine arrived in the

Speaker:

neighborhood, Fauchelevent, ex notary and

Speaker:

a peasant who was almost educated, had a

Speaker:

business which was beginning to be in a bad way.

Speaker:

Fauchelevent had seen this simple workman grow

Speaker:

rich while he, a lawyer, was being

Speaker:

ruined. This had filled him with

Speaker:

jealousy, and he had done all he could on

Speaker:

every occasion to injure Madeleine.

Speaker:

Then bankruptcy had come, and as, the

Speaker:

old man had nothing left but a cart and a horse,

Speaker:

and neither family nor children, he had turned Carter.

Speaker:

The m horse had two broken legs and could not

Speaker:

rise. The old man was caught in the

Speaker:

wheels. The fall had been so unlucky

Speaker:

that the whole weight of the vehicle rested on his breast.

Speaker:

The cart was quite heavily laden.

Speaker:

Father Fauchelevent was rattling in the throat in the most

Speaker:

lamentable manner. They had tried but in

Speaker:

vain to drag him out. An unmethodical

Speaker:

effort. A had awkwardly given a wrong

Speaker:

shake might kill him. It was impossible to

Speaker:

disengage him otherwise than by lifting the vehicle off of

Speaker:

him. Javert, who had come up at the moment of

Speaker:

the accident, had sent for a jackscrew.

Speaker:

Monsieur Madeline arrived. People stood

Speaker:

aside respectfully. Help.

Speaker:

Cried old Fauchelever. Who will

Speaker:

be good and save the old man?

Speaker:

Monsieur Madeleine turned towards those present.

Speaker:

Is there Jack screw to be had? One has

Speaker:

been sent for, answered the peasant. How

Speaker:

long will it take to get it? They have gone for the

Speaker:

nearest to flashauds place, where theres a

Speaker:

farrier. But it makes no difference. It will take a good quarter of an

Speaker:

hour. A quarter of an hour.

Speaker:

Exclaimed Madeline. It had rained on the

Speaker:

preceding night. The soil was

Speaker:

soaked, the cart was sinking deeper into the earth

Speaker:

every moment and crushing the old carters breast more and

Speaker:

more. It was evident that his ribs would be broken

Speaker:

in five minutes more. It is impossible to wait

Speaker:

another quarter of an hour, said Madeline to the peasants

Speaker:

who were staring at him. We must. But

Speaker:

itll be too late then. Dont you see that the cart is

Speaker:

sinking? Well, listen,

Speaker:

resumed Madeline. There is still room enough under the

Speaker:

cart to allow a man to crawl beneath it and raise it with his

Speaker:

back. Only half a minute and the poor man can be taken

Speaker:

out.

Speaker:

Is there anyone here who has stout loins and heart? There

Speaker:

are five Louis d'Or, to be earned. Not

Speaker:

a man in the group stirred. Ten Louis,

Speaker:

said Madeline. The persons present dropped

Speaker:

their eyes. One of them muttered, a man would

Speaker:

need to be devilish strong, and then he runs the risk of getting

Speaker:

crushed. Come, began Madeleine

Speaker:

again. 20 Louis. The

Speaker:

same silence. It is not the will

Speaker:

which is lacking, said a voice.

Speaker:

Monsieur Madeleine turned round and recognized

Speaker:

Javert. He had not noticed him on his

Speaker:

arrival. Javert went on. It is

Speaker:

strength. One would have to be a terrible man to do such

Speaker:

a thing as lift a cart like that on his back.

Speaker:

Then, gazing fixedly at Monsieur Madeleine, he went

Speaker:

on emphasizing every word that he uttered.

Speaker:

Monsieur Madeleine, ive never known but one man

Speaker:

capable of doing what you ask.

Speaker:

Madeleine shuddered. Javert added with an

Speaker:

air of indifference, but without removing his eyes from

Speaker:

Madeleine. He was a convict.

Speaker:

Ah, said Madeleine. In the galleys at

Speaker:

Toulon. Madeline

Speaker:

turned pale. Meanwhile, the cart

Speaker:

continued to sink. Slowly. Father Fauchelevent

Speaker:

rattled in the throat and shrieked, im

Speaker:

strangling. My ribs are breaking. Screw

Speaker:

something. Ah. Madeleine,

Speaker:

glanced about him. Is there then, no

Speaker:

one who wishes to earn 20 Louis and save the life of this poor

Speaker:

old man? No one stirred.

Speaker:

Javert resumed. Ive never known

Speaker:

but one man who could take the place of a screw. And he was

Speaker:

that convict.

Speaker:

>> Brie Carlisle: Ah.

Speaker:

>> Brie Carlisle: It is crushing me. Cried the old man.

Speaker:

Madeline raised his head, met

Speaker:

javerts. Falcon eyes, still fixed upon him,

Speaker:

looked at the motionless peasants and smiled

Speaker:

sadly. Then, without saying a

Speaker:

word, he fell on his knees, and before the crowd had even

Speaker:

had time to utter a cry, he was underneath the

Speaker:

vehicle. A terrible moment of

Speaker:

expectation and silence ensued. They

Speaker:

beheld Madeleine almost flat on his stomach beneath that

Speaker:

terrible weight. Make two vain efforts to

Speaker:

bring his knees and his elbows together. They

Speaker:

shouted to him, Father, Madeleine, come out.

Speaker:

Old Fauchelevert himself said to him,

Speaker:

Monsieur Madeleine, go away. You see

Speaker:

that Im fated to die. Leave me. You will get

Speaker:

yourself crushed also. Madeleine

Speaker:

made no reply. All the spectators were

Speaker:

panting. The wheels had continued to sink, and it

Speaker:

had become almost impossible for Madeline to make his way from under the

Speaker:

vehicle. Suddenly, the enormous

Speaker:

mass was seen to quiver. The cart rose

Speaker:

slowly. the wheels half emerged from the ruts.

Speaker:

They heard a stifled voice crying, make, haste.

Speaker:

Help. It was Madeleine who

Speaker:

had just made a final effort. They rushed

Speaker:

forwards. The devotion of a single man had given force and

Speaker:

courage to all. The cart was raised by 20

Speaker:

arms. Old Fauchelevert was saved.

Speaker:

Madeleine rose. He was pale,

Speaker:

though dripping with perspiration. His clothes were

Speaker:

torn and covered with mud. All

Speaker:

wept. The old man kissed his knees and

Speaker:

called him the good God, as, for him.

Speaker:

He bore upon his countenance an indescribable

Speaker:

expression of happy and celestial suffering. And

Speaker:

he fixed his tranquil eye on Javert, who was

Speaker:

still staring at him.
