Shownotes

In this week's episode we speak to Lee-J Walker, joint MD at TheBusinessDesk.com.

Lee explains to us the essential business skills learnt from being an engineer AND an army reservist, the importance of understanding different cultures when doing business internationally and, from his own experiences, what to look out for when doing an MBO.

He also tells us why 3.5million people per year read the BusinessDesk.com, what their business mode is (its ACE by the way), and how The Business Desk was affected by, and then responded to, the COVID pandemic..

INTRODUCING LEE-J WALKER

Lee-J Walker is an experienced senior manager who has worked across the UK and the Middle East within the world of on-line advertising and recruitment. Prior to joining TheBusinessDesk.com, Lee-J was based in Dubai working for the $22bn turnover global recruitment company Manpower Inc as the regional group sales manager for the Gulf, more forward to now, he heads up the commercial and financial operations for TheBusinessDesk.com, the leading regional digital business news media that provides daily, weekly and as it happens business news to senior executives across the North, Midlands and South West.

Lee-J is hugely experienced at driving revenues, operations and his Linkedin bio says he ‘makes things happen!’

In his personal time, he used to take to the more adventures of life, including travelling, mountaineering, completing Ironman triathlons and cycling but nowadays opts more for fine dining, walking and pub lunches. He also spends a considerable amount of time helping charities raise funds and raises tens of thousands each year across TheBusinesDesk events but also sits as a board member of the Firecracker ball which is responsible for raising hundreds of thousands each year for Barnardos.

ABOUT YOUR HOST

Phil Fraser went from an accidental kitchen table start up, with no investment, all the way to multi-million pound sale to a PLC 18 years later. He’s travelled the full SME business journey of launch, growth, scale and exit.

As well as hosting the Leeds Business Podcast, Phil now works with ambitious SME-owners as a Business Sounding Board (think somewhere between Business Coach and Business Mentor). In simple terms, he’s ‘a pair of ears and an extra pair eyes’ for SME Owners helping them to be better at what they do. Phil’s mantra is It doesn’t need to be ‘lonely at the top’. He helps Business Owners to be better business owners, by helping with their clarity and focus.

As a Business Sounding Board, he gives SME Owners the time & space to regularly discuss their challenges and opportunities, with no sense of judgement or bias, and in complete confidence. This allows them to explore their options in full, culminating with a list of issues to address/clarify, a clear target in mind, a roadmap to success, and a renewed enthusiasm and confidence for the challenges ahead.

Phil has appeared as a guest on over 60 podcasts, webinars and interviews, from around the whole globe, talking on a variety of business subjects. You can view them all at https://philfraser.co.uk/watch-hear-phil/.
