Shownotes

I was sitting on a beach in Mexico after leading a fire ceremony when I realized something. Magic was showing up in my life constantly and I was ignoring most of it. A nickel that rolled to my feet on my 55th birthday. A Billy Joel concert that appeared out of nowhere the same morning. Both delivered without me chasing, forcing, or hustling anything.

In this episode I tell the full double nickel and Billy Joel stories, share how a late night conversation on a beach led me to build a new kind of scoreboard, and introduce the Magical Scorecard - a simple tool built around five categories that spell MAGIC. I also talk about what happened when I started using it (8 things the first week, 20 the next, 25+ by the third) and why this matters for the high performers, athletes, and coaches I work with.

:

Hello.

2

:

Welcome back friends.

3

:

Good to be with you.

4

:

This is episode two of Spark

Insights with Coach Reg.

5

:

I am Coach Reg.

6

:

Hope all of you are doing well.

7

:

If you hadn't had a chance

to listen to episode one,

8

:

I hope you'll go back and listen to it.

9

:

So this week is all about.

10

:

Wait for it.

11

:

Magic.

12

:

Speaker 8: I wanna take you back

to a conversation that was in

13

:

Mexico while sitting on a beach

after a fire ceremony that I led

14

:

with members of Curiosity Island.

15

:

There was a bunch of us sitting

around after the ceremony.

16

:

I.

17

:

Speaker 4: And we all began talking

about magical things that were happening.

18

:

But before I do that, I wanna take you

back about a year and a half because

19

:

all of this started with a nickel.

20

:

The date is October 23rd, 2024.

21

:

It was my 55th birthday, I call

this the double nickel episode.

22

:

A few weeks before.

23

:

Arlene and I were on a golf course

we were on the first tee box, and

24

:

she noticed a nickel laying on the

cart path, we laughed about it.

25

:

She picked it up.

26

:

It was our little gesture to say

to the universe, Hey, we accept

27

:

whatever abundance that you have for

us, even though it was just 5 cents.

28

:

I put that nickel in my pocket,

carried it around with me, I actually

29

:

put it in my laptop bag, which was

cool because I carried it around

30

:

with me and it traveled with me to.

31

:

San Antonio, Texas.

32

:

Speaker 5: I was there for a conference.

33

:

Arlene came with me.

34

:

After the conference, we

took an entire week to golf.

35

:

We golfed at some really cool

places down in San Antonio.

36

:

It was a fun way for us

to celebrate my birthday.

37

:

We were in a Hampton Inn in downtown San

Antonio, just a block away from the Alamo,

38

:

I had this thought.

39

:

Wouldn't it be fun if I

could get another nickel?

40

:

Because on that day I turned 55, right?

41

:

Five, five double nickels.

42

:

I said, wouldn't it be fun if

another nickel showed up today?

43

:

I did something crazy.

44

:

I said, you know what?

45

:

I wanna find a nickel, but

I want it to be obvious.

46

:

It literally has to be sitting at my feet

because I don't wanna be searching for

47

:

this thing 'cause I'm gonna be golfing.

48

:

We head out to breakfast.

49

:

Oh, there's a really important point here.

50

:

The important point here is

that I had a second thought.

51

:

I was a little greedy on my birthday,

so I said the other thing that I would

52

:

really love on my birthday is to get

a surprise, one that completely floors

53

:

me, that's completely suited to me

54

:

would come outta nowhere, and it

would be so obvious that this was

55

:

a gift that I couldn't miss it.

56

:

Little nickel.

57

:

Big gift.

58

:

I went downstairs, we actually went down

early and there was a reason we went

59

:

down early because there was a group of

middle schoolers there that we know were

60

:

leaving or going down for breakfast at

seven 30 and there was a hundred of 'em.

61

:

We figured the waffles and all the

good stuff would be gone by then.

62

:

We go down early and I see this

guy sitting in a Billy Joel,

63

:

Madison Square Garden t-shirt.

64

:

I'm like, oh, that's awesome.

65

:

I said, Hey, dude, what's going on?

66

:

You went and saw Billy Joel

at Madison Square Garden?

67

:

In the best New York accent.

68

:

He's like, I've been to

every Billy Joel show.

69

:

I can't do a New York accent.

70

:

I went to every.

71

:

Billy Joel show at Madison Square Garden.

72

:

Oh my goodness.

73

:

That's amazing.

74

:

Now, you may or may not

know I love Billy Joel.

75

:

My mom loved Billy Joel.

76

:

My daughter loved Billy Joel.

77

:

Hey man.

78

:

I said, that's awesome.

79

:

I said, what do you see in him next?

80

:

He looked at me like,

what is your problem?

81

:

What?

82

:

He goes, he's playing tonight.

83

:

Here?

84

:

He said, yes.

85

:

He's playing at the Alamo Dome,

and he pointed over there,

86

:

which is four blocks away.

87

:

I'm a block away from the Alamo.

88

:

I'm four blocks away from the Alamo.

89

:

Do.

90

:

I said, holy crap.

91

:

I.

92

:

Went back to the table.

93

:

I'm like, Hey Arlene.

94

:

Guess what?

95

:

Billy Joel's playing here tonight.

96

:

Sting is his special guest.

97

:

We went up, we looked for

tickets first balcony, first row.

98

:

The tickets were like half price

'cause it was the night of the show.

99

:

Booked the tickets on the

spot and boom, there you go.

100

:

Before seven 30 hit,

I got my big surprise.

101

:

We were heading to see Billy Joel

that night, I thought, oh wow,

102

:

what could be better than that?

103

:

Fantastic birthday surprise.

104

:

It was a great show.

105

:

I believe, it might be the last time we

saw Billy before he had his accident.

106

:

We go to the golf course.

107

:

It's another beautiful day in

San Antonio, a great fall day.

108

:

It's in the eighties.

109

:

Before we go out for the round, I go in.

110

:

, Sorry, this is part of the story.

111

:

I went into the restroom.

112

:

I went into the stall.

113

:

Okay, I am in a seated position and

somebody comes in to the washroom

114

:

at the same time, goes in the stall

next to me, and I hear a bunch

115

:

of change drop on the tile floor.

116

:

Ding, ding, ding, ding.

117

:

But what comes rolling under the stall?

118

:

A nickel.

119

:

It falls right at my big toe, on my

right foot, I looked down I went, oh my,

120

:

I said, Hey man, you dropped some change.

121

:

He goes, keep the change.

122

:

I picked that nickel up.

123

:

Yes.

124

:

Okay.

125

:

It's unsanitary, but it went in my pocket.

126

:

I washed my hands.

127

:

I walked outside and I

showed Arlene, I said.

128

:

The nickel just showed up, it is

before 9:00 AM on my birthday.

129

:

I had asked for a nickel to show up at my

feet that I couldn't miss, and a gift that

130

:

would completely floor and surprise me.

131

:

That is magical folks.

132

:

Rewind back to two weeks ago.

133

:

We're sitting on the beach

and I start telling the story.

134

:

El B's there Meredith, Annie, Laura,

and Ryan, , uh, buddy from the Midwest.

135

:

I just met him.

136

:

I'm gonna talk about Ryan at some point,

but let's just say Ryan is one of the most

137

:

enthusiastic people that I've ever met.

138

:

The perfect hype guy.

139

:

I tell this story, the jaws

in my audience were dropped.

140

:

They're like, holy cow.

141

:

Ryan says to me,

142

:

oh man, that's crazy.

143

:

And the typical Ryan voice.

144

:

So as I am.

145

:

Talking and sharing the story

and seeing people, their

146

:

mouths agape with excitement.

147

:

I thought to myself, you know what?

148

:

These types of things

happen to me all the time.

149

:

When I got back home I said, I am going

to create a new type of scoreboard.

150

:

My scoreboards has always been

, basketball scoreboard on the wall.

151

:

Who's ahead, who's behind, how much

time's left in the game in business,

152

:

the profit and loss statement.

153

:

These scoreboards are very restrictive.

154

:

They're information based.

155

:

I said I'm gonna create

a new type of scoreboard.

156

:

I'm gonna keep track of the unexpected,

expected magical things in my life.

157

:

I wrote unexpected things on my notepad.

158

:

Scott Chang said, no,

dude they're expected.

159

:

You're writing it down because

you expect these things to happen.

160

:

Magic happens to you.

161

:

That was a big change.

162

:

Thank you, Scott, for that.

163

:

I had about eight or nine categories and I

shared it with, some people on the island.

164

:

And, my friend Brandon Fong, of

course, figured out a way to have

165

:

an acronym that spells M-A-G-I-C-E.

166

:

It's able to spell magic, I

now have a magical scorecard.

167

:

The first week.

168

:

I had the magical scorecard and I sat

down at the end of the week, I was able

169

:

to have about eight things on the list.

170

:

I didn't remember all the

little things that happened, but

171

:

there's eight things on my list.

172

:

The next week, I was able to fill up about

20 things, and as I'm recording this.

173

:

I'm recording this on a Friday.

174

:

I've already filled up over 25

things just in the beginning

175

:

part of the week, I have made a.

176

:

Very conscious decision to

celebrate magical things

177

:

that are going on in my life.

178

:

M stands for money.

179

:

Whenever I receive money or sales, that

could be a gift, any sort of thing.

180

:

Anytime money comes in, I put it

on the scorecard and I celebrate.

181

:

A stands for appreciation.

182

:

It's gifts and compliments.

183

:

G is for gains.

184

:

This is around experiences, things that

are just, really phenomenal experiences.

185

:

Eyes for introductions, it's connections,

intros, referrals, and C are chances which

186

:

I call invitations and opportunities.

187

:

The way I do this is anytime, every

time something magical shows up in any

188

:

one of these categories, I document

it right there on my phone in a note.

189

:

Whatever is closest to

me, I write it down and

190

:

acknowledge it..

191

:

Then, at the beginning of the

week, , I read through that list

192

:

and I get to celebrate again.

193

:

I know people have a journaling practice.

194

:

I know people have a gratitude practice.

195

:

This to me is a little bit more

visceral than that because I'm

196

:

capturing things in the moment.

197

:

I'm categorizing them.

198

:

It does something to confirmation bias.

199

:

It's the Reticular Activating System.

200

:

If you're on the lookout for a new car,

and let's say you're in the market for

201

:

a  silver Chevy Tahoe, you start to

see silver Chevy Tahoes everywhere.

202

:

What I believe I've done for my

conscious and my subconscious is that

203

:

I am becoming more aware of magical

things in my life, I am inviting

204

:

more of those things to show up.

205

:

It has done something to my psyche

that has taken me from at times being

206

:

anxious to being more open to good

things and seeing the good things.

207

:

I am making a choice for me to celebrate

light and to not let darkness overcome

208

:

me personally, collectively, globally.

209

:

Here's why this matters to me.

210

:

I work with high performers,

entrepreneurs, founders,

211

:

athletes, fellow coaches.

212

:

Here's a pattern.

213

:

They're really good at

tracking what's wrong.

214

:

It's really difficult as a coach

to be positive after a loss and.

215

:

Coaches are just, so focused in on how

we can improve and what went wrong, that

216

:

we take very little time to celebrate.

217

:

We review the losses, the

misses, the gaps in performance.

218

:

We have scorecards in business for

revenue and goals and KPIs, and it

219

:

tells us where we fell short, and

it's easy to look at the negative.

220

:

But one thing that I really did in my

last years coaching basketball, and one

221

:

thing I do now is I coach my golf athletes

is what has shown up that we didn't have

222

:

to grind for what has shown up that has

been good in our performance, what has

223

:

shown up that's been great in our life.

224

:

I have conversations with my

athletes about what's going

225

:

well, what's exciting you?

226

:

If your only conversation with your

team, if you have the opportunity

227

:

to coach is what went wrong and

what's going on in your sport, it's

228

:

a very one dimensional relationship.

229

:

Same thing goes in business.

230

:

If the only thing you talk about

is your business, it's really just

231

:

gonna keep hammering your identity.

232

:

Expand.

233

:

Expand.

234

:

Life's about relationships, it's

about health, it's about experiences.

235

:

There's so much more to be involved in

life when you're relationship with people.

236

:

Don't just talk about the

narrow thing you have in common.

237

:

Expand out, especially if you're

in a position where you are working

238

:

or mentoring or coaching somebody.

239

:

Talk about what went right.

240

:

Talk about what's going on in their life,

talk about what they're excited about.

241

:

These are the things that really matter.

242

:

I would love for you to celebrate

and have your own magical scoreboard.

243

:

. I have put together a one page PDF.

244

:

It sits by my desk.

245

:

It has some really simple instructions.

246

:

I would love for you to download that.

247

:

Give this thing 30 days.

248

:

I want to hear what magic has

shown Let's celebrate that.

249

:

It's no good just to

celebrate with yourself.

250

:

Celebrate with somebody.

251

:

Celebrate with me.

252

:

Tell me what's going on.

253

:

I wanna know what magic is showing up and

254

:

how this has affected you..

255

:

I am really enjoying this process.

256

:

I hope you do too.

257

:

I'm going to continue to just

share what's on my mind every week.

258

:

I am really excited about this format.

259

:

I look forward to being with you

each and every week, but mostly, I

260

:

enjoy hearing from you, so subscribe

to the newsletter if you haven't.

261

:

Spark insights.net.

262

:

Make sure you subscribe to the podcast

so you don't miss any episodes.

263

:

It's be good to be with you.

264

:

We'll talk to you next week.
