Evo Terra:

Not every guest you interview is going to be amazing.

Evo Terra:

Not every monologue you write is going to be stellar.

Evo Terra:

There's no way to fix that reality.

Evo Terra:

What do you do with a subpar episode?

Evo Terra:

Don't release it.

Evo Terra:

Today's episode is brought to you by the Advancing Podcasting

Evo Terra:

community at advancingpodcasting.xyz.

Evo Terra:

Because why would I do anything normal?

Evo Terra:

It's a special community just for listeners and readers of

Evo Terra:

Podcast Pontifications and as populated by like-minded working

Evo Terra:

podcasters just like you who also want to make podcasting better.

Evo Terra:

You're already listening to the show.

Evo Terra:

So why not extend the conversation and your influence

Evo Terra:

on the future of podcasting?

Evo Terra:

Evo Terra:

Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.

Evo Terra:

I'm allergic to most forms of platitudes and marketing speak.

Evo Terra:

With

Evo Terra:

"Crush it" and "Fake it 'til you make it" topping my list of eye-rolling phrases.

Evo Terra:

Dropping "knowledge bombs," or dropping "value

Evo Terra:

bombs" is another one of those.

Evo Terra:

Except when it's

Evo Terra:

warranted.

Evo Terra:

Mike Carruthers of the

Evo Terra:

podcast Something You Should Know did that very thing.

Evo Terra:

He dropped a value bomb as we were recording another Podcasters'

Evo Terra:

Round Table session last week.

Evo Terra:

Podcasters' Round Table, for the uninitiated, is a live show that

Evo Terra:

is, well, it's just exactly what it sounds like a group of podcasters

Evo Terra:

in a round table, talking about various things related to podcasting.

Evo Terra:

Very inside

Evo Terra:

baseball like Inside Podcasting, except it's not Inside Podcasting.

Evo Terra:

It's called Podcasters' Round Table.

Evo Terra:

Anyhow,

Evo Terra:

I digress.

Evo Terra:

Last week was my fifth appearance on Podcasters' Round Table where

Evo Terra:

I joined, oh gosh, longtime podcasters, Dave Jackson and Ray

Evo Terra:

Ortega, along with Mike Carruthers, who I just mentioned a moment ago.

Evo Terra:

Podcasters' Round Table is just a fun, casual conversation.

Evo Terra:

And it's certainly no contest, but all three of us, and Mike

Evo Terra:

probably himself included, we agreed that Mike won the episode.

Evo Terra:

Again, there is no contest of these episodes, but Mike clearly won the

Evo Terra:

episode when he revealed that 20% of the interviews he conducts for

Evo Terra:

Something You Should Know, 20% of those interviews don't make it on the show.

Evo Terra:

Now, why not?

Evo Terra:

Well, simply because the content isn't good enough.

Evo Terra:

And Mike cares deeply about the content of his podcast.

Evo Terra:

And when a guest doesn't cut it, he doesn't put the guest on.

Evo Terra:

Now, that's even with Mike taking the time to record a video that

Evo Terra:

details out in exacting detail, what is expected of a guest.

Evo Terra:

So when they reach out to guests and they vet guests and they send them this

Evo Terra:

video and the guests say, "Yes, I got it.

Evo Terra:

I know exactly the kind of energy and entertainment you want me to bring

Evo Terra:

to the show," 20% don't make it.

Evo Terra:

That's one in five.

Evo Terra:

If you do an interview show, perhaps you do that interview show once a week.

Evo Terra:

Imagine if every fifth week the guest you had lined up, didn't cut it.

Evo Terra:

And then you decided not to air that episode.

Evo Terra:

That's quite radical, I think.

Evo Terra:

And as I said on the show, I wish more podcasters would take that approach.

Evo Terra:

I wish more podcasters cared as much about their show or cared so

Evo Terra:

much about their show that they too would refuse to air an episode

Evo Terra:

that wasn't of the highest quality.

Evo Terra:

Now, that's hard.

Evo Terra:

I mean, I get it.

Evo Terra:

Especially if your recording schedule mirrors your production schedule, which

Evo Terra:

in turn mirrors your release schedule.

Evo Terra:

If you do all those things in one week, produce it - you know, record

Evo Terra:

that guest, produce that episode and release it all in the same

Evo Terra:

week, which most podcasters do, you have no built-in buffer.

Evo Terra:

You don't have the ability to do what Mike does for his show and

Evo Terra:

that's make sure none of these shows, none of the episodes, ever air that aren't

Evo Terra:

of the best quality.

Evo Terra:

If you don't have

Evo Terra:

that built-in buffer,

Evo Terra:

you can't do that.

Evo Terra:

So maybe you should have

Evo Terra:

that built-in buffer.

Evo Terra:

You know, you're the gatekeeper when it comes to the quality of your show,

Evo Terra:

or someone on your team is the gatekeeper of quality when it comes to your show

Evo Terra:

and the reality is that not every guest you bring on is going to be great.

Evo Terra:

Take it again from what Mike

Evo Terra:

just told us - 20%.

Evo Terra:

So, in a not-great episode with a not-great

Evo Terra:

guest, nobody wants to listen to that.

Evo Terra:

Literally, no one wants to listen to that.

Evo Terra:

I mean, sure, your loyal fans will certainly forgive you if you

Evo Terra:

have a not-so-great episode

Evo Terra:

every so often.

Evo Terra:

But every four or five

Evo Terra:

episodes not-so-great?

Evo Terra:

Come

Evo Terra:

on.

Evo Terra:

That's a stretch for your existing listeners.

Evo Terra:

Now, think about the

Evo Terra:

all-important first-time listeners.

Evo Terra:

Do you want their first experience with you and your show

Evo Terra:

to be a not-so-good episode?

Evo Terra:

Is that what you want them to hear?

Evo Terra:

Now look, this is me.

Evo Terra:

Only you can answer that question.

Evo Terra:

Only you know what your tolerance is for subpar quality.

Evo Terra:

So I'll just remind you that every day, podcasters in your niche are

Evo Terra:

seriously stepping up and improving the quality of their shows.

Evo Terra:

Every day,

Evo Terra:

professionals, some with

Evo Terra:

years of media experience, are making their shows more attractive

Evo Terra:

to their listeners and drawing audience away from subpar shows.

Evo Terra:

Every day, people are finding amazing podcasting content that does not,

Evo Terra:

in fact, truck with subpar episodes.

Evo Terra:

And they find, those people find they have less and less room in

Evo Terra:

their media consumption diet for shows with inconsistent quality.

Evo Terra:

So don't let your show be a statistic.

Evo Terra:

The best way to control

Evo Terra:

your podcast's quality

Evo Terra:

is you control

Evo Terra:

your podcast's quality.

Evo Terra:

Now, some quick housekeeping, Podcast Movement '21 is coming

Evo Terra:

up in just a few days and no, I will not be attending in person.

Evo Terra:

I will be attending virtually.

Evo Terra:

However, I've blocked the entire week and plan on watching from the comfort of my

Evo Terra:

own living room, where I'll be engaging and interacting as much as I possibly can.

Evo Terra:

Now I am, however, planning on attending

Evo Terra:

in-person ShePodcasts.

Evo Terra:

Yes,

Evo Terra:

I will be

Evo Terra:

attending ShePodcasts in-person

Evo Terra:

in October of 2021.

Evo Terra:

So if you're coming to Scottsdale, Arizona, which is just around the

Evo Terra:

corner, I would absolutely love to meet up at the event or out for drinks

Evo Terra:

after the event or before or whatever.

Evo Terra:

Just drop

Evo Terra:

me a note, evo@simpler.Media, and

Evo Terra:

we shall find a time to meet.

Evo Terra:

And finally if my retelling of Mr.

Evo Terra:

Mike Carruthers’ value bomb, cheesy

Evo Terra:

though, what do - if that was

Evo Terra:

valuable to you, please consider lending me

Evo Terra:

your support by buying me a

Evo Terra:

virtual coffee—or maybe 12 virtual coffees—on BuyMeACoffee.com/evoterra.

Evo Terra:

That's it.

Evo Terra:

I shall be back tomorrow with yet another Podcast Pontifications.

Evo Terra:

Cheers!
