In this episode of "A Changed Mind", our host, David Bayer, explores the powerful concept of the Backwards Law—the idea that chasing success, wealth, or happiness can actually push those things further away.

Instead, David shares how lasting change comes from internal alignment, not relentless hustle or grind. Through practical steps and mindset-shifting exercises, David guides listeners to embody the emotions, thoughts, and actions of their "future self," acting as though their goals are already achieved.

David:

You ever notice that the more you chase after something, the more it seems to evade you? You want something really, really bad, and somehow that makes it even harder to manifest in your life. You want more money, money starts to run away from you. You want better health, you find yourself chasing health problems all the time. There's something powerful at the root of all of that. And the most successful people in the world, they understand this, and not understanding it is likely the one thing preventing you from having more wealth, more health, and from achieving your full potential. And it's called the Backwards Law. It's one of the most important and powerful laws that you have to understand if you want to progress in your life. And the crazy thing is we've been taught just the exact opposite of it. We've been taught that you have to work hard, hustle hard, grind your way to producing results. But what if I told you that the hustle and grind is the exact thing that's preventing you from creating what you want? What if there was a way to literally step into the future, evaluate what you did to create a result, and then come back into the present moment with a perfect plan, a clear map to achieve anything you want? That's what I'm going to talk to you about in today's episode. It's called the Backwards Law.

Welcome to A Changed Mind, a journey into the topics that matter to you most, from the neuroscience and spirituality of mindset and personal growth to groundbreaking strategies for health, wealth, and relationships, to open and honest conversations about pressing global issues such as the environment, censorship, corporate capture, and democracy. Each and every episode reminds us of the certainty of the goodness of the future and provides the teachings, tools, and timeless wisdom inspiring you to create real lasting change in your life and in the world. If you've been desiring a sanctuary for your spirit, a place to go to tune out the distraction, negativity, and doom and gloom, so that you can tap into the deep power, the vibrancy, and the potential you have inside, you're in the right place. Welcome to A Changed Mind.

All right, guys, there's an incredible paradox to creating something that you want in your life. It could be a goal, it could be a vision that you have. We are taught to pursue the goal, to actually work hard, figure it out, come up with a plan, control your external circumstances, outwork the person next to you to produce the result. But what that actually does is it creates resistance inside of you. And that resistance creates a gap between where you are and what you want to create. And what's important to understand is that you must learn to embody the emotional state of having the outcome that you want if you ever want to actually have the thing. Because from the emotional state of having, you will have the thoughts, you will take the action, you will create the coincidence and the synchronicities to produce the result. So the question is, how do we actually feel like we have something that we don't have? Well, on the flip side of that, most of the time what we're feeling is desperation, anxiety, and trying to force it. And all of those things disrupt what we would call manifestation or producing results. Trying too hard produces the opposite effect. And so success is not the product of struggle. It's actually the product of internal alignment. And I want to give you what I think is the most game-changing simple equation. If I could distill all of personal growth down into one equation, all of self-help, all of creating wealth, all of creating any change that you want, it would be this. And you've heard me talk about it in other episodes. It's a writer downer. Desire, meaning whatever it is that you want, desire plus non-resistance equals desired result. Okay? If there's something that you want to have an amazing relationship, you will produce the desired result, an amazing relationship. It will happen. If you can do one thing and one thing only, which is be non-resistant to the relationship. And the challenge here is that as soon as we realize we want something, you wanna make a million dollars, you notice that you've got almost nothing in your bank account. The moment that you realize you wanna have a deeper spiritual connection, you're noticing how disconnected you are all the time. The moment that you realize you want your business to grow and you no longer wanna have to do all the things, but you wanna have people support you, you start to notice what little support you have. That's the interesting thing about the human being operating system is that the moment we get clear that we want something, your brain is going to direct its attention to the absence of it. And so almost immediately, the moment we have a desire, we move into some form of resistance to the thing that we want. And that's where the game is played. This is where mastery can be achieved, and you can manifest or produce any result that you want to achieve your full potential. If you can start to reclaim control over the way that you experience life and not allow your system to move into its default, which is noticing the absence of the thing that you want. Desire plus non-resistance equals desired result. And the resistance actually comes from believing that there's a large gap between where you are and the outcome that you want. And then your mind or your brain will give a meaning to that gap. There's not enough time. I just don't have any luck. I'm not good enough. I don't have enough social media followers. I'm not smart enough. Your mind will express limiting beliefs as a reaction to the observation of this gap. And so what pursuing an outcome, meaning trying hard, often implies is some form of resistance. Because when a desire is clean, and unopposed internally, you'll be inspired. You'll naturally take action. You'll play your way through life as you produce the result. Now think about it for a moment. All that trying hard is an indication of some form of resistance. And one of the things that we teach, I've talked about this in other episodes, is that there are only two states of being: powerful states and primal states of being. Powerful states are states of being that feel good. States like joy, curiosity, excitement, Empathy, compassion, peace, calm. And this is when your nervous system is in the parasympathetic expression. You're in the rest, relaxation, and what I would call your place of personal power. And then there are primal states, states like stress, anxiety, overwhelm, anger, jealousy, depression, worry. This is when your sympathetic nervous system is active. This is the fight, flight, or freeze state of your nervous system.. And in that state, you don't have access to resources. You don't have access to ideas. I would suggest that when you're in a powerful state, you're connected to spirit, your higher power, God, other people, the universe. You have a presence about you. When you're in a primal state, you're literally functioning from survival. So you kind of toggle between what I would call the supreme man or woman in a powerful state, or kind of just another version of some mammal in a primal state. And what's interesting is you're always in one state of being or the other, and you're never in two states of being at the same time.. And so if you were to ask me, hey Dave, what's the number one thing I could focus on in order to produce some result that I want or some change that I desire in my life? I would say notice when you've moved into a primal state and know that when you're in a primal state, you're experiencing some form of resistance. Identify the resistance and transform it and move back into a powerful state. That's the name of the game. It's like wax on, wax off. It's that simple. It doesn't mean it's easy, but it's that simple. And again, it supports this idea that if you want to produce the desired result, then the key is to be in a state of non-resistance, to not be entangled with some story that your mind is telling you about why there's a gap between where you are and where you want to be. When you're in a powerful state, you're in a calmness, you're in a certainty, you're in an anticipation, and that state unlocks creativity and intuition, opportunity recognition.. It literally changes the way you perceive reality. You start to focus on the things that are gonna help you quote unquote close the gap versus focusing on the problems. And when you're in a primal state, you're in this anxiety-driven action, and you'll notice that's what hustle and grind is. Because when you are in an effortful pursuit of the outcomes that you want, do you feel good or do you feel bad? There are times when you're excited about what you're pursuing, but if you think about what it is that you want right now, I want you to just think about one thing that you want. What is it? More money, better relationships, better health. As you're trying to materialize that result, most of the time, do you feel good or do you not feel good? Most people, most of the time are in a primal state. And we've been programmed into this primal state because we're told by this hustle culture that is now being broadcast through social media and YouTube podcasts, Instagram, TikTok, a bunch of like very masculine Navy SEAL type personalities saying, you gotta work harder, you gotta get out, you gotta be a part of the 5:00 AM club. I'm like, shit, man, I do not want to get up at 5:00 AM. It cannot be that God gave me an opportunity to create something extraordinary out of my life and that a requirement was wake up at 5:00 AM. Like, don't you think that would've been in the Ten Commandments? Don't you think Jesus would have come, or Muhammad would have come, and a big part of their gospel would have been, wake up at 5:00 AM, outwork the person next to you. No, it's just the opposite. Jesus came and said, my yoke is easy. He's like, the way that I teach is an easy way. Desire plus nonresistance equals desired result. But there is this masculine culture of hyper hustle that says, if you're not working 24/7, somewhere someone else is, and when you meet them, they will win.. And notice that hustle culture has this incredible overemphasizing of external mechanics. Take the action, control the circumstances around you. It underestimates completely internal state, but internal state is what all the truly great people said was important. You know, Gandhi, a man who helped motivate an entire population through nonviolent action to overthrow the government that was ruling them. I mean, think about that. That's something, isn't it? Was a guy who said, I have so much today. I must meditate for 2 hours instead of 1. He's like, I gotta manage my inner state. He wasn't concerned about time or money or tools or followers. All of those things came and they were required, but they were the byproduct of internal alignment and desperation pushes those things away. Desperation reinforces scarcity. And when you are hustling and when you are grinding, when you are pursuing something, there's a part of you that believes I might not actually get the thing that I want, but I'm here to tell you struggle is not a prerequisite for achievement. What is most important is inner alignment and energetic coherence, because that can produce more than any kind of brute force ever will. And so I want to give you a practical blueprint for this alignment. Okay. And this is where I talked about earlier in the episode where I was like, imagine if you could just go to the future. See where you are there and look backwards and see the plan of how you achieved a thing, how you made the money, how you produced the business or results, how you met your soulmate, how you became more spiritually connected, and then come back into the present moment with that blueprint and that plan. How amazing would that be? Well, you can, and I talk about Neville Goddard a lot in these recent episodes. He was just such a great teacher, and of course you can find what he talks about in scripture, but he talked about assume the wish fulfilled.. So assume that it's already done. And I've talked about future self versus old self. Assume you are the version of yourself who has already produced the outcome. That's actually time travel. Assume you've already produced the result. If you had already produced the money, how would you be feeling today? If you had already attracted the soulmate, how would you be feeling today? If you had already had that deep connection with God, or overcame your anxiety, how would you be feeling today? That's the first question. How would you be feeling today? The second question is, what would you be thinking differently today? And the third is, what action would you be taking different? So I'm going to walk you through this. It's a really powerful framework. Like, literally, you can come back to this episode, or if you can right now, take out a piece of paper. If you're driving, please don't do that. But write down at the top of the page, what do you want? And I want you to create 3 columns, emotions on the left, thoughts in the middle, and actions on the right. What is it you want? And so let's say I, I wanted to have a net worth of $10 million. Okay. If I had a net worth of $10 million, how would I be feeling today? I'd be feeling financially secure. I'd be feeling generous. I'd be feeling abundant. I'd be feeling calm, safe, secure. Write all those things down. In column 1. Okay. Now below that, actually write out how you're feeling today while you're pursuing, in this case, $10 million, right? $10 million Dave. And I would be feeling stressed. I'd be feeling anxious. I would be feeling overwhelmed. I would be feeling financially insecure. So here we're identifying how we feel today and how we would feel if the wish were already fulfilled. How we would feel if we went to the future and we had already achieved that goal. Column number 1, emotions. At the top, you've got how you'd feel if it was already accomplished. Below that, you've got how you feel in the pursuit of it today. Then take column 2. What would you be thinking? Well, I wouldn't be thinking about how I don't have enough money. I'd probably be thinking, uh, I'd love to take my family on a vacation. I'd be thinking about new business ideas. I'd be thinking,, you know, I should learn how to manage my investments and create real wealth. I'd be thinking, I wonder if there's a charity that I could donate some time and energy and money to. That's what I'd be thinking. What am I thinking today? Well, today I'm thinking I don't have enough. I'm thinking I may not have enough in the future. I'm thinking I won't be able to pay my mortgage. I'm thinking that other people have somehow figured this out and I haven't been able to figure it out. So there's something wrong with me. Those are the thoughts I'm having today while I'm out there trying to hustle and grind. And take action to produce the results that I want, right? What would my future self be thinking having already achieved this? What is my current self thinking or what I would like to be my old self? And then the third column is actions. How would you be acting differently? Now, this is where a lot of people get stuck because people go like, I'd be taking a private jet, but Dave, I can't take a private jet. I don't have the money. No, I got it. But would you be tipping more generously? Maybe you'd be tipping more generously. Would you be more present for your family instead of worrying about money? Would you be more thoughtful about gift giving on holidays if you had $10 million? Would you be doing research and taking a look at maybe the next home that you would want to buy or vacation that you would want to take? What would you be doing? I understand you don't have the money, but what would you be doing if you had already produced the result, in this case, $10 million? And instead, what are you doing today? You say, well, what I'm doing today is I'm obsessively checking my stock market trading fund, worried that it's gonna go down. I'm worrying. That's the action that I'm taking. I'm spending a lot of time daydreaming about how I'm not gonna have enough. I'm scrolling through social media because I don't like the feeling of financial insecurity and, and I don't like being with those emotions. So I'm, I'm checking out, I'm, I'm looking at social media. I'm, I'm going out on the weekends and I'm drinking because I'm so stressed about my finances, but I just get a, a little bit of relief by, you know, drinking or smoking some pot and getting high. Those are the actions that I'm taking. I said, okay, got it. Now you've got the blueprint because the way that you're gonna produce the result is not by trying to produce the result. This is the backwards law. The way that you're gonna produce the result is by being the person who has produced the result today before the result has materialized. You are going to practice the version of you who's produced the result. How do you practice it? Look at that piece of paper. You're gonna practice those emotions. You're gonna practice those thoughts. You're gonna practice those actions because those are the emotions, the thoughts, and the actions of someone worth $10 million, of someone who's no longer in chronic pain, but living in wellbeing and vibrancy, of someone who is in a relationship with their soulmate, of someone who's spiritually connected, of someone who is no longer trapped in their business, but has a lot of support around them and is now, and owning their business, not operating their business, whatever it is that you want. Of someone who is now feeling peace rather than anxiety, feeling confidence rather than insecurity. That's the playbook. Because think about it for a minute. If you practiced being a millionaire long enough, wouldn't it be 100% certain that given some amount of time you'd be a millionaire? I mean, look, if you feel like a millionaire, think like a millionaire, and do like a millionaire, you're gonna become a millionaire. If you feel like a bestselling author, think like a bestselling author, and do like a bestselling author, you'll become a bestselling author., right? If you start feeling like a manager in your organization, thinking like a manager in your organization, and doing like a manager in your organization, isn't your organization gonna promote you to a manager? So this is the backwards law. So often we wait for our desired outcome to produce itself, to give ourselves permission to think, feel, and do differently. But calibration and aligning yourself with the outcome is about being clear on who that person is and feeling, thinking, and doing the things that that person would do right here, right now. Because all of the results that you are or are not producing in your life right now are a byproduct of your being. And it sounds really woo. People are like, oh, being versus doing. What is being? Being's very clear. Being is what you think, what you feel, what you do. That's being. That is a representation of your consciousness. That is a representation about what you believe about life, about yourself, about money, about health, about your body. It's how you think, how you feel, and how you act. So the results are a byproduct of being, not what you're forcing. And so what we're talking about here is a shift in your identity, because a shift in your identity must occur. It must precede the evidence, and the evidence will be a byproduct of that identity shift. Repeated thoughts, repeated emotions, and repeated actions crystallize into reality. You become what you consistently practice internally. You say, well, Dave, that's hard. Well, it's impossible when you don't understand that this is how it works. This is why I'm sharing with you how the Backwards Law functions. And if I look at my life, anytime I have achieved something worthwhile, an identity shift preceded it. And sometimes it feels like it's by a hair. Sometimes I have to look at it and I go, huh, Am I changing the way that I'm thinking and feeling and doing because I produced the result? Or was there a shift in how I was thinking, feeling, and doing just before? And 100% of the time it was a shift just before. And the good news is, is it doesn't have to be massive shifts. Christ, the greatest teacher of this work who ever lived, said all you need is the faith of a mustard seed, a small shift in the way that you're thinking, you're feeling, and you're doing, and you can tell the mountain to go from here to there. You can literally make mountains move. That's the gospel. That's the good news. So if there's one thing to remember from today's episode, it's this: you don't create results by chasing them. You create results by becoming the person they come from. And when you start to release the inner resistance, the limiting beliefs, the same old meanings that you keep giving to the gap, and you practice the state that you want to live in, the state of the outcome, you create the space for new ideas, for new opportunities, for new synchronicities to meet you. And so my invitation is to start practicing a new state today. Get clear on what you want and then think like it's done, feel like it's done, act like it's done. Because the life that you're wanting, the vision that you have is not something that you achieve by force. It's something that gets created through alignment. And when you align, the results stop being something that you chase and they start becoming a natural expression of who you are. So I hope you love this episode as much as I love sharing it with you.
