Shownotes

The script is from episode 21 of a podcast, where the speaker explains how to access Coursera courses for free with a public library card. The speaker details that this is possible for people living in specific states and cities like California, New York, Tennessee, Missouri, and Chicago. The speaker shares his personal experience of using library resources to take an 8-module Google cybersecurity professional certificate course from Coursera for free, from which he earned CPE credits towards his CISSP renewal. The speaker also mentions the added bonuses of a library card, including access to Udemy, free WiFi hotspots, newspapers like New York Times, and more. The speaker encourages listeners to explore this free route to improve their cybersecurity knowledge, saying it is a sign of curiosity and inquisitiveness, two qualities important to succeeding in cybersecurity.---

Speaker:

This is a quick PSA.

2

:

I'm about to tell you how

to get Coursera courses.

3

:

For free.

4

:

With a little piece of plastic.

5

:

That you can get for free.

6

:

And there's no gimmicks.

7

:

There's no catches.

8

:

There's no coupon codes.

9

:

And I'm not asking you

to subscribe to anything.

10

:

But it is pretty cool.

11

:

So keep listening.

12

:

I originally added this PSA.

13

:

Into the podcasts that I do

called bite-size security.

14

:

But really it applies to anybody

who's listening to the higher drive.

15

:

Because you're probably

looking for training.

16

:

For whatever career path

you're looking to do.

17

:

And this may very well apply to you.

18

:

So if you now have

LinkedIn learning for free.

19

:

What you should on my previous podcast.

20

:

And possibly Udemy.

21

:

You now can get Coursera courses.

22

:

For free.

23

:

Possibly.

24

:

And I'm going to tell you

how to do that right now.

25

:

If you are interested in taking the Google

cybersecurity professional certificate

26

:

course, which has eight modules.

27

:

And it might take you, I don't know,

six months to do, depending on the

28

:

level of expertise you're already at.

29

:

You're looking at $49 a month.

30

:

So maybe $300 to do it.

31

:

If you really stick to it for

the seven months and you have

32

:

absolutely no experience.

33

:

However, if you'd like to get it for

free, no gimmicks, no coupon codes.

34

:

I'm not selling you.

35

:

Some, you know, some portal

for you to join for my services

36

:

if you are in California, New

York, Tennessee, Missouri,

37

:

and the city of Chicago.

38

:

And potentially somewhere

else, but you'll have to check.

39

:

Get yourself.

40

:

A public library card.

41

:

Already said it in the last episode.

42

:

But I did discover.

43

:

That indeed Coursera was

offered to me through the.

44

:

California state public library.

45

:

So one of the library cards was

Contra Costa that collected.

46

:

And when I logged into the digital

resources, there was Coursera.

47

:

Now is on a wait list.

48

:

But I did get, I did get the invite.

49

:

And it said to keep checking

back and I did it like every

50

:

Monday, they must purge it.

51

:

And I went back and I checked.

52

:

And I got in.

53

:

And now I am taking the full eight

module, Google cyber security,

54

:

professional certificate.

55

:

And each module that you finish

and there's eight of them.

56

:

You get a certificate

with your name on it.

57

:

That you can use for CPE credits for

if you already have a current cert.

58

:

So I'm using them for my CISSP and it

shows me the approximate hours that I took

59

:

and the actual downloadable certificate.

60

:

So I grabbed both.

61

:

I put them in my portal and

they're accepted and I can prove

62

:

that I've taken that training.

63

:

So if you're in any of those

states, Your public library.

64

:

May offer.

65

:

Coursera.

66

:

They may not, but they may.

67

:

And if it wasn't one of the listed,

you should check because there

68

:

are a lot of digital resources out

there beyond just LinkedIn learning,

69

:

which seems to be the primary one.

70

:

That you don't even know exists

because every library page.

71

:

Is different and it's weird.

72

:

And every card has its own

bar code and every card has

73

:

its own pen and its password.

74

:

So, what you need to do is get

yourself a library card and you

75

:

already have one figure out what

your pin and your password is.

76

:

Log into that libraries cards

website online and see what

77

:

other resources you can get.

78

:

I also get Udemy.

79

:

And this free wifi hotspots,

New York times wall street

80

:

journal access to audio books.

81

:

The list goes on.

82

:

It's quite extensive, actually.

83

:

And you're going to save yourself.

84

:

Initially hundreds of dollars, but in

a year's time, thousands of dollars.

85

:

If nothing else, if you're

interested in a cyber security.

86

:

Certificate and you want to take the

Google cyber security professional

87

:

certificate, or you can go on LinkedIn

and start setting, studying for the

88

:

CISSP it's well, worth your time

to do this because I'm telling you.

89

:

Not a lot of people.

90

:

We'll take the time to do it.

91

:

And if you do that makes you

curious, it makes you inquisitive.

92

:

And those are also qualities of

someone who's going to succeed

93

:

and do very well in cyber security
