Transcripts

Stephanie:

They're the joyful agains our children shout on the swings, the

2

:

exhausting agains of cooking and laundry,

and the difficult agains of discipline.

3

:

So much of what we do

as mothers is on repeat.

4

:

So what if we woke up with clarity,

knowing which agains we were called

5

:

to, and went to bed believing we

are faithful in what matters most?

6

:

We believe God's Word is

the key to untangle from the

7

:

confusion and overwhelm we feel.

8

:

Let's look up together to embrace a

motherhood full of freedom and joy.

9

:

Welcome back to the again, podcast.

10

:

I'm your host, Stephanie Hickox.

11

:

And this is Ratu by entrusted ministries.

12

:

Thanksgiving wrapped up and just

like that we're in December.

13

:

Did the closeness of that

throw you off a little bit too.

14

:

This year, we totally understand.

15

:

Last Christmas, Jen Frackman

Emily DOE Betsy corny.

16

:

And I.

17

:

Sat down for a lengthy conversation.

18

:

And we had four great episodes about

decorating for Christmas advent

19

:

celebrations, book recommendations,

how we wrap presents and.

20

:

Even developing codes.

21

:

But if you're busy and just need to

get to it, I have taken some clips.

22

:

So that you can get

right to our best tips.

23

:

Of course, if you want to listen to

the episodes in their entirety, I

24

:

will link those in the show notes.

25

:

This episode is going to cover some

of our favorite advent traditions

26

:

that we have done as well as some

favorite book recommendations.

27

:

We know it's past December 1st, but it

really isn't too late to start spending

28

:

some daily time making sure your

children know that this is all about

29

:

celebrating the arrival of Jesus Christ.

30

:

Last episode.

31

:

I sat down with grace, Anna Castleberry,

and we talked about her amazing

32

:

advent resource manger in danger.

33

:

I've begun that with my family this

year and we are absolutely loving it.

34

:

So I hope you had a chance to listen to

that, but if you're needing something

35

:

simple that you can find around the

house of right now, listen for these

36

:

ideas or perhaps it will be inspired.

37

:

To purchase.

38

:

One or more of the

books that we mentioned.

39

:

All right, let's keep it

short and sweet and get to it.

40

:

Stephanie: Let's get into Advent

traditions then, any book recommendations

41

:

Emily: Jen, I know you have books.

42

:

I know you do.

43

:

Jen: I know.

44

:

I was trying to, be but I was like

eager, just biting at the bit to go.

45

:

Oh, I love it.

46

:

I do.

47

:

I had to pare down, but I picked

out like my best that I love.

48

:

Okay.

49

:

So the first one.

50

:

It's called The Advent Book by

Jack and Kathy and we actually were

51

:

gifted this, but it is beautiful.

52

:

It has a bright, shimmery gold

cover that says The Advent Book,

53

:

and then each page is very thick.

54

:

Thick gold lined page.

55

:

So it's what it's meant to be

like a keepsake and there are

56

:

beautiful doors on each page you

open the door and it tells a story.

57

:

It is so precious and so

pretty and just beautiful.

58

:

All the doors are so ornate and

Detailed and It's just really So

59

:

this one is one of my favorites

60

:

Emily: and is this, good for families with

61

:

young children older also?

62

:

Jen: Yes, it's for anyone.

63

:

Emily: Okay.

64

:

Jen: Young, because It's brief, I

think young children can understand

65

:

it as well but the beauty of it,

older children appreciate it even

66

:

Emily: Yes.

67

:

Jen: Okay, so there's that and then

another of my favorites is Christmas

68

:

Day in the Morning by Pearl S.

69

:

Buck.

70

:

And it just is a sweet story of a little

say a young boy who works on a farm or

71

:

farm and he wanted to surprise his dad.

72

:

and give him and so he went up before

his dad was awake and for him so be

73

:

there In the morning when everyone

woke up and his dad was never around.

74

:

In the morning on Christmas morning

to see the children come family

75

:

being together and realizing that the

gifts don't have to be worth a bunch

76

:

of money, and the love behind it.

77

:

It's just really good

78

:

this is my absolute favorite.

79

:

It's The First Christmas Night,

written by Keith the artist is

80

:

Illustrated by Christine

81

:

Kornacki, K O R N A C K I.

82

:

The paintings in this

are absolutely unreal.

83

:

They look like they are live

people jumping off the page.

84

:

But it is set...

85

:

To the night before Christmas,

that poem, Twas the night before

86

:

Christmas and all through the house.

87

:

But this is night.

88

:

So it starts off and it says let's

see, I'll read the first part.

89

:

Twas the very first Christmas

when all through the town

90

:

not a creature was stirring.

91

:

There was not a sound.

92

:

shining bright in the heavens So

high gave the luster of midday sky.

93

:

So it goes through the

whole Christmas story.

94

:

But set to the night before Christmas.

95

:

And then I love the Christmas

miracle of Jonathan Toomey.

96

:

This is a special one.

97

:

I tried to make molasses cookies and then

we read this story, Sitting by the Fire.

98

:

But it's just about an old

harsh man who lost his, wife and

99

:

child and he's, pretty gruff.

100

:

And a widow and her son move

to the town and they ask him to

101

:

make a manger scene out of wood.

102

:

And he teaches the child how to make

them and He describes, like, no, the

103

:

cow is very interested in looking at

Jesus this way and just the thought

104

:

that goes into making the manger scene

out of wood It's a very sweet, story.

105

:

So we like that one.

106

:

And then another one is An Orange

for Frankie by Patricia Polico.

107

:

And this one is Again, about

family and it's about their

108

:

family feeding homeless people.

109

:

And this little boy gives a sweater

that his sister had given him to a

110

:

homeless man because he was so cold.

111

:

And then there's a.

112

:

A special portion about how the

family gets an orange every Christmas.

113

:

It's very special.

114

:

And the boy lost his orange.

115

:

And so the whole family gave

a slice of their orange a

116

:

wedge of their orange to him.

117

:

And the way that they show it and

illustrate it in the book, and the

118

:

way that they come together as a

family, it's just really sweet.

119

:

It's just a nice

heartwarming story as well.

120

:

And this book is very different, and

I wouldn't recommend for younger kids.

121

:

But for older kids, it's

actually a really neat story.

122

:

It's called Shooting at the Stars,

d it's about the Christmas of:

123

:

It's written by John Hendricks,

and how in the middle of the

124

:

war, there was a Christmas truce.

125

:

where they stopped fighting and

they sang Silent Night and so

126

:

it's a true Christmas story in the

battle, in the midst of a battle.

127

:

And so it does talk about war, so

that's why I wouldn't recommend

128

:

it for the younger ages, but

just the Christmas spirit.

129

:

Of

130

:

being in the middle of a war and knowing

it's Christmas back home and everyone is

131

:

celebrating family and what they got to

do this Christmas was pretty remarkable.

132

:

Those are some of my favorites.

133

:

And then we, I have a whole basket full

of books that anytime that I find one

134

:

that talks about the Christmas story

in a different perspective, I will.

135

:

Put it in the basket.

136

:

And so we probably have a good 30

different books that we read through

137

:

all of December that are just

different ways to tell the story.

138

:

One is from the perspective of an animal.

139

:

One is from the perspective of baby Jesus

looking out at everybody coming to visit.

140

:

One is from the perspective of

the shepherds just all different

141

:

ways that we can talk about this.

142

:

Just think of how.

143

:

Amazingness is that Christ

came down to be a baby born in

144

:

a manger and all other Kings.

145

:

Are so royal and majestic and get the

best, but our Savior came and was born

146

:

where animals eat from a trough of hay.

147

:

So as many ways that we can just

show them and put that in front of

148

:

them that this is such a moment to

treasure and to remember each year

149

:

Is a good book in

150

:

my book.

151

:

Stephanie: We want it to stay fresh

and new to them no matter how old

152

:

I get, I find the Lord does that for

me and gives me a new perspective

153

:

or someone in the Christmas story to

really connect with and empathize with.

154

:

There's so much richness there.

155

:

So thank you for all of those

156

:

Betsy: Those are great.

157

:

Jen: Yes, there's one more

that I have to mention.

158

:

It's not technically Christmas.

159

:

It's called Thanksgiving Graces, but

we read it at Thanksgiving, but then

160

:

we also read it at Christmas because it

talks about how families come together

161

:

and there's a little boy who's nervous

because his grandma and his mom are

162

:

in the kitchen cooking for everybody

and more people keep showing up.

163

:

This aunt and uncle came and they didn't

know they were coming and then this niece

164

:

and nephew show up home from college

and they didn't know they were coming.

165

:

And so the little boy goes into the

kitchen and is worried for the grandma

166

:

and the mom and says, What do we do?

167

:

You didn't know they were coming

and the grandma stops what she does

168

:

and it's doing and takes the child

upon her knee and says, Do you

169

:

remember how Jesus fed the 5, 000?

170

:

And all it took were two loaves

and Five fish or three fish.

171

:

What was it?

172

:

I can't remember.

173

:

five two loaves and three fish.

174

:

or five fish.

175

:

Remember how Jesus fed the 5, 000?

176

:

and so she just goes through how

God always makes it be enough.

177

:

and she says, we've never Hungry God

just makes it happen and makes it work.

178

:

the whole family then sits around at

the table and sure enough, at the end of

179

:

the story, there's enough for everybody.

180

:

Everybody is filled.

181

:

Everybody's hearts are filled

as well as their bellies.

182

:

And so we read that at Christmas time

because that's when we're all together.

183

:

Stephanie: My kids are at an age where

184

:

The advent calendars are

still really special to them.

185

:

And we've done different ideas

where I've taken little gift bags.

186

:

They were at Ikea one year, but

it was like 25 little gift bags.

187

:

I'd put a chocolate in there for

each of them and then an idea.

188

:

So I have to say, I did not put the

Christmas idea in the bag beforehand.

189

:

I waited till the night

before and thought, okay,

190

:

what's feasible for tomorrow?

191

:

Because this is when they were

pretty little and I would know,

192

:

okay, tomorrow's the day we're

going to do our gingerbread house.

193

:

So I would put a little note

in there that says, today we're

194

:

making a gingerbread house.

195

:

And they loved that surprise

of it wasn't just a chocolate.

196

:

It was, what are we going to

do together that's special?

197

:

I didn't just have it be

activities or fun things.

198

:

It's, there are service projects in there.

199

:

So it might be write a thank

you note to the librarians or

200

:

shovel snow for a neighbor.

201

:

I want to be really careful that.

202

:

in celebrating Christ that I'm

not making my kids think that

203

:

December is all about them.

204

:

It's not.

205

:

How can we delight in the joys

and make these fun memories, but

206

:

also keep it centered on others.

207

:

So that's a way with the Advent

traditions that I've done that.

208

:

One of my favorites is One year we

built a manger at church together, and

209

:

it came with its own devotional, but

just having that manger, and we have it

210

:

empty in front of the tree, and, can

put a piece of hay every day, just

211

:

preparing the way for Jesus to come.

212

:

Honestly, kind of a sweet story Maybe

five years back and I had decorated my.

213

:

My house for the time

where I felt good about it.

214

:

When you have toddlers and you're

like, it's just so much work.

215

:

And it.

216

:

was the first time where I was

like, my house looks beautiful.

217

:

I felt like I had some advent systems

in place where in traditions that I

218

:

was excited to begin with my kids and

I felt like I've really prepared well.

219

:

This is exciting to head

into December like this.

220

:

And then I went to my friend's house

she has her own design company.

221

:

And so I went to her house and her kids

are older and it just, it was amazing.

222

:

And, in the front of her

house, she had this manger.

223

:

I looked at it and I just had to

fight the no, like I'm not doing

224

:

it right because clearly that's

the most beautiful tradition,

225

:

but I didn't even know about it.

226

:

And I went home and I looked it.

227

:

up and okay, number one, it's

not going to be here on time.

228

:

And then number two, I can't

afford to buy it right now.

229

:

I just had to fight that battle of

someone's doing it differently And that

230

:

seems better than what I'm doing , I'm

mentioning that because there are so

231

:

many different traditions you can do.

232

:

So many different books you can read

it's good for me to remember don't

233

:

have to do every idea on Pinterest.

234

:

We don't have to embrace every tradition.

235

:

It's about keeping peace in the

home and focusing on Christ.

236

:

And often that means doing less.

237

:

What was so sweet about it is then

the next week at church, our church

238

:

announced that they were having

this workshop where families were

239

:

going to build majors together.

240

:

Jen: Aw,

241

:

Stephanie: it was only 10.

242

:

And.

243

:

That was just another way.

244

:

where I felt like, Lord, like saw

my heart in that and you provided.

245

:

And so now we have the memory of building

it together and it was even better.

246

:

So we love having our manger and then

my daughter loves putting her baby

247

:

doll in there on Christmas night.

248

:

One year we did something that

was completely my husband's idea.

249

:

And he said there's 24 days in December.

250

:

And there's 24 chapters in Luke.

251

:

So what if we just read a

chapter of Luke every night?

252

:

Jen: That's cool.

253

:

Stephanie: And you start with Luke one

and Luke two, and then you're a couple

254

:

of days before Christmas and you're

reading about the crucifixion and

255

:

everything Jesus went through for us.

256

:

And it was almost like this is too hard,

wanting to enter in the joy of Christmas

257

:

and it's the pain of good Friday.

258

:

But I realized though, this is so

beautiful we understand why Jesus came

259

:

so much because we've been meditating

on everything he's going to do.

260

:

So when we wake up tomorrow morning.

261

:

We're waking up with that story of

his death and resurrection so fresh in

262

:

our minds and it ended up to be such a

beautiful way to meditate on why Christ

263

:

came and we all have Bibles, right?

264

:

That's a free option.

265

:

and I mentioned that because

sometimes we do overcomplicate it

266

:

one of our more recent Advent Books

is Unwrapping the Greatest Gift it

267

:

goes along with the Jesse tree idea.

268

:

So you can, I think, buy ornaments

to go with it, but I make my own.

269

:

I just bought some plain ones

at Hobby Lobby and then wrote

270

:

numbers on them or names and then

decorate them with paint markers.

271

:

And then the kids hang them on

the tree and, I would put tea

272

:

lights around the room and then

we would take the time to light.

273

:

It's the 10th of December, then

we would light 10 candles and that

274

:

anticipation of building the moment for

the devotional, they really loved that.

275

:

It seemed to just help them

meditate on the sweetness of it.

276

:

And I think for little ones, having

them maybe color a picture or something

277

:

while While you're reading can always

278

:

help their attention span.

279

:

we really love the best Christmas

pageant ever by Barbara Robinson.

280

:

And I will warn you, there's

some sassy moments in here.

281

:

But these naughty children learn about

the Christmas story and their fresh eyes

282

:

to see what Jesus did for us and what

Mary and Joseph went through in the story.

283

:

It's funny and relatable.

284

:

We just laugh so hard at it.

285

:

Jen: Oh, that's so fun.

286

:

We listened to the audio book of

that and it was an old grandma with

287

:

a really raspy voice that read it.

288

:

Oh, it was so good.

289

:

I was laughing so hard.

290

:

I had to stop the audio because

they couldn't, we couldn't

291

:

hear what was happening and

I was laughing so hard at it.

292

:

It's a good.

293

:

Good book.

294

:

Stephanie: And the little girl

saying, I would say, Shazam!

295

:

He's here!

296

:

And it's just really

297

:

sweet.

298

:

Jen: So true.

299

:

Aww.

300

:

Betsy: Unsolicited comments.

301

:

I love what you said.

302

:

Shazam, he's here.

303

:

teaching Sunday school one time.

304

:

This little girl, we asked her, Jesus

was going to Zacchaeus house and

305

:

we asked her, if Jesus was coming

to your house what would you do?

306

:

and she raised her, hand right

away and said, I would decorate a

307

:

little bit and practice my bowing.

308

:

It was so

309

:

cute.

310

:

Just right

311

:

Stephanie: Oh, that's

312

:

Betsy: a little five year old.

313

:

I always remember that.

314

:

just so sweet.

315

:

We are looking for more monthly donors.
