This week's tip comes from listener Michelle Brannam, host of the Living Her

Purpose With God podcast, who asked a great question.
Speaker:
00:00:07
How can you tell if a sudden download spike is genuine or just bot traffic?
Speaker:
00:00:12
Seeing a big jump in your podcast downloads is always exciting.
Speaker:
00:00:15
But before you assume you've gone viral, it's worth taking a few minutes to
Speaker:
00:00:19
understand what's actually behind these numbers.
Speaker:
00:00:21
Because sometimes a spike is genuine and sometimes it can be caused by automated
Speaker:
00:00:25
traffic, feed crawlers or bots. So where do you start?
Speaker:
00:00:30
The first thing I check is where these downloads came from.
Speaker:
00:00:33
Most people listen to podcasts in dedicated podcast apps on their phone.
Speaker:
00:00:36
So if a sudden spike is mostly coming from something like Chrome on macOS or
Speaker:
00:00:41
another desktop browser, that's worth looking into.
Speaker:
00:00:44
Not because these downloads are automatically bots, but because it's different
Speaker:
00:00:47
from how most people normally listen to podcasts.
Speaker:
00:00:51
The next thing I look at is location. For example, if you suddenly see a large
Speaker:
00:00:55
number of downloads coming from somewhere like Ashburn, Virginia in the US, don't panic.
Speaker:
00:00:59
Ashburn is home to some of the world's biggest data centres,
Speaker:
00:01:02
so automated traffic often appears to come from there.
Speaker:
00:01:06
Next, I look at what was downloaded. Did one episode spike, or did your entire
Speaker:
00:01:10
catalogue suddenly jump at the same time?
Speaker:
00:01:13
If it's one episode, maybe it was shared in a newsletter, mentioned on another
Speaker:
00:01:17
podcast, or picked up on social media.
Speaker:
00:01:20
If dozens of episodes all receive a similar number of downloads over a short
Speaker:
00:01:24
period, that's another clue that's worth digging a little deeper.
Speaker:
00:01:27
And it might be something as simple as a new follower who has auto-download
Speaker:
00:01:30
on their podcast app, so they're downloading a chunk of your back catalogue
Speaker:
00:01:33
when they start following your podcast.
Speaker:
00:01:36
And finally, ask yourself whether the rest of your analytics support the story.
Speaker:
00:01:40
Did you gain new followers? Was there more traffic to your website?
Speaker:
00:01:44
Did your newsletter get more sign-ups?
Speaker:
00:01:46
And were more people talking about your podcast online?
Speaker:
00:01:50
Because one of the best ways to spot unusual activity isn't by looking at just
Speaker:
00:01:53
one metric, it's by looking at all of them together.
Speaker:
00:01:56
Analytics tell a story and the trick is making sure it all adds up.
Speaker:
00:02:00
So celebrate the spike, just spend a few minutes making sure you understand
Speaker:
00:02:04
what your analytics are actually telling you.
Speaker:
00:02:07
Until the next time, happy podcasting.
