For decades, your career gave you structure, identity, and a ready answer to the question “so, what do you do?” Then retirement arrives, and suddenly that answer is gone.
In this episode, Jacquie sits down with Cyn Meyer, a certified retirement life coach, the founder of Second Wind Movement, and Amazon bestselling author of The Rewire Retirement Method, to explore the psychological and neurological side of the retirement transition. Cyn breaks down why identity loss is so disorienting (hint: your brain has spent decades running on external motivators), and how the science of neuroplasticity gives us a roadmap back to purpose.
You’ll hear about the 5 Rings of Retirement framework, the power of inner work before outer work, and why the smallest daily practice (just five minutes of protected dreaming time) can quietly rewire everything. If you’ve been feeling stuck, aimless, or like you’re waiting for a lightning bolt of clarity that just isn’t coming, this episode is for you.

KEY TAKEAWAYS FOR LISTENERS:
- Your brain can create new neural pathways at any age, even into your 80s and 90s. Retirement is not too late for growth; it’s one of the most important times for it.
- The identity gap in retirement is neurological, not a personal failure. Decades of external motivation, from career, titles, and achievements, have carved deep pathways that don’t disappear overnight.
- Clarity doesn’t arrive as a lightning bolt. It builds quietly through repetition. Five minutes of protected, inward-focused dreaming time daily is enough to start the process.
- Inner work must come before outer action. Trying to “just get busy” without first gaining inner clarity is why so many retirees plateau or cycle back to feeling stuck.
- The comparison game is one of the biggest obstacles to a purposeful retirement. Watching what colleagues, neighbors, or “successful retirees” do will cloud your alignment every time.
- Giving back doesn’t have to mean traditional volunteering. The ring that people crave most is the one that lets them share their unique gifts, paid or unpaid, big or small.
- You are not a stereotype. “I’m not creative”, “I’m not adventurous”, “I’m not outgoing” — these are limitations borrowed from external constructs, not truths about who you are.
- Structure and spontaneity are not opposites. The structure of daily bookends and a designated ‘me time’ actually creates the freedom for spontaneity.
- It takes about 66 days to form a new habit, and roughly 3 months to build the full Rewire system. The upfront effort decreases as the new pathway becomes subconscious.
- Your reticular activating system, the part of the brain that filters what’s relevant to you, will start surfacing more and more aligned opportunities once you begin feeding it intentional, inward prompts.
Guest Bio:
Cyn Meyer didn’t set out to become a retirement coach, but life kept pulling her in that direction. From early experiences performing in retirement homes to witnessing the long-term effects of sedentary aging, the seeds were planted early. After her father’s brain surgery and her grandparents’ experiences with Alzheimer’s, she became deeply interested in how the brain evolves over time.
With a 20-year career in marketing, much of it working with retirees, Cyn saw a pattern emerge: people who had built successful lives often lost momentum quickly after retirement. That observation led her to study neuroplasticity and eventually create the Rewire Retirement Method, helping people rebuild purpose and identity from the inside out.
