Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Welcome to Backstage Money, real World Finance for Musicians.

Speaker:

I'm your host, Jason K. Powers, and this is where music and Money collide.

Speaker:

Today I am joined by Lexxi Garza, Hartless powerhouse, vocalist and pianist,

Speaker:

originally from San Antonio, Texas.

Speaker:

Now in Nashville.

Speaker:

She has toured nationally and internationally, lights up dueling piano

Speaker:

stages, and is a multi-instrumentalist who will jump from bass to drums,

Speaker:

to keys in a single night even.

Speaker:

She's the entertainment director with Pete's Dueling Piano bar and

Speaker:

co-owner of Sound City Entertainment with her husband Jason Hartless.

Speaker:

In recent years, Lexxi has also joined legendary rocker Ted Nugent on tour,

Speaker:

appearing on stage during various shows in his US tours, becoming the only female

Speaker:

to perform live with Nugent himself.

Speaker:

Lexxi, welcome to the show.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Hi.

Speaker:

Thank you

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

I appreciate you coming on.

Speaker:

This is, uh, this is an exciting time.

Speaker:

We've been doing lots of recordings and, and I've, I've really enjoyed meeting

Speaker:

everybody and, and I've heard some of your story and I'm, I'm really excited

Speaker:

to, to share that with everybody.

Speaker:

So let's jump right in.

Speaker:

Let's, let's hear about, I always like to start with origin stories.

Speaker:

We call it, you know, how did you, how did you get into music?

Speaker:

You started at a pretty young age.

Speaker:

And kind of found your gift pretty early on, I think.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, I was five and it's kind of a, a really dorky story.

Speaker:

So when I was a kid, I was obsessed with Little House on the Prairie.

Speaker:

Like that was my favorite show.

Speaker:

I watched it all day every day.

Speaker:

and I don't really remember doing this.

Speaker:

This is just a story that my parents told me, um, later, but I had like

Speaker:

a little Fisher-Price piano and they heard me, um, figure out the

Speaker:

theme song with no reference in the exact key in on the piano at five.

Speaker:

And they were like, not normal child behavior.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And so they, they put me in piano lessons and I, I studied classical music for.

Speaker:

Probably 10, 15 years after that.

Speaker:

I didn't start singing until, uh, college.

Speaker:

So that was kind of a labor bloomer for me as far as singing goes.

Speaker:

But, um, yeah, so been in it

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah, so, where did you kind of excel and, and did you think

Speaker:

growing up in, in junior high and high school, you were gonna be a performer?

Speaker:

Or were you, did you just love it or what were you, what were

Speaker:

you thinking at that time?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah, so you know, I always kind of

Speaker:

knew that being a performer is.

Speaker:

Is in my blood.

Speaker:

It's kind of where I belong.

Speaker:

You know, I, I have a, a pretty big personality that was allowed to shine in

Speaker:

that sort of an environment, you know?

Speaker:

My parents were, were really supportive.

Speaker:

I was homeschooled

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Okay.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: 17, so I was kind of able to have the fLexxibility

Speaker:

to do the tours and, and do all the different kinds of bands and all

Speaker:

the different projects and stuff.

Speaker:

And so, I, I always knew that that's what I was supposed to do.

Speaker:

I just, at the time, you know, I knew how fickle the industry was and I wasn't

Speaker:

sure if it would ever happen, you know?

Speaker:

'cause there's a lot of times the people out there that.

Speaker:

know, it never really happens for, it's just, it's very common.

Speaker:

So I didn't know what the future had in store, but yeah.

Speaker:

I'm glad I stuck with

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

And, and here you are.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

See, as, as we say, my haven't we come a long way,

Speaker:

you know?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yes,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: right.

Speaker:

Well, so, so when did you start going on stage?

Speaker:

When did you start performing in front of crowds and, and how did

Speaker:

you get sort of from, I'm gonna say a prodigy musician child right,

Speaker:

to performing where you're at now?

Speaker:

I mean, what, what was kind of that?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, it was, you know, I, it's so, it's so funny looking back on it

Speaker:

to say, because be 28 on Friday and it's crazy to, to say, you know,

Speaker:

I've been here doing this thing for.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: years, you know, that it's just, it's,

Speaker:

it's crazy and I'm really lucky.

Speaker:

my first recital when my first time playing in front of people was a piano

Speaker:

recital because I studied classical.

Speaker:

Um, we had like a, a sort of, you know, all the students for this

Speaker:

teacher would perform for this recital.

Speaker:

And I was so nervous.

Speaker:

I remember sitting down.

Speaker:

And I played my pieces like 10 times faster than they were supposed to go.

Speaker:

I just was like, my brain just like completely quit.

Speaker:

And I was like, let me just get through this as fast as possible, you know?

Speaker:

and then as you know, I started to perform more, you know, every, anywhere I could.

Speaker:

My dad, you know, he.

Speaker:

Kind of helped me get exposure with a bunch of different bands.

Speaker:

And he was always like, don't worry about the money.

Speaker:

Like getting your name out there, getting your face out

Speaker:

there, your talents out there.

Speaker:

That's what's important.

Speaker:

And everything else is gonna come along naturally, you know, and

Speaker:

that's exactly what happened.

Speaker:

You know, by the time my, uh, I was in college, I had been a part

Speaker:

of, know, leading worship teams and classical recitals and jazz bands

Speaker:

and rock bands, and I'd kind of done.

Speaker:

All of this stuff, which was was awesome, moving into a more professional stage

Speaker:

of my life that I had all these sort of tools under my belt, as it were so.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Then what's your involvement with, so take me

Speaker:

now, you start doing the dueling, the dueling piano thing, right?

Speaker:

You have the, uh, what, how did you get from.

Speaker:

That, uh, Pete's dueling piano war,

Speaker:

right?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah, so long story short, so I went to college for classical

Speaker:

music when I was 13, and it was fun.

Speaker:

It was great.

Speaker:

That's kind of where I realized though, that I am a rocker

Speaker:

at heart and I would like, it would be a chore for me to learn these Beethoven

Speaker:

sonatas, and I really just wanted to be listening to Iron Maiden, you know?

Speaker:

Um, and it, it sort of developed, you know, down the road that

Speaker:

I wanted to be a front person.

Speaker:

I wanted to be

Speaker:

as big of a personality as I could be on the stage.

Speaker:

And I, my first job coming out of college was actually on

Speaker:

carnival, uh, cruise ships, and I

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Okay.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: piano

Speaker:

bar entertainer

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Um.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: and right out the

Speaker:

gate.

Speaker:

Um, and it was awesome.

Speaker:

It was fun.

Speaker:

It was a lot of work.

Speaker:

It was, you know, six nights a week, four hour show solo, um,

Speaker:

which is a long time to be on

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah, sure.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: and entertaining singing.

Speaker:

And, um, when I got off the ship, I don't know how this happened to this

Speaker:

day, somebody, um, from a, a company called Howl at the Moon found me.

Speaker:

Me and I sort of fell backwards into dueling pianos.

Speaker:

I had no idea

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: it was, and spent about five years really honing that craft,

Speaker:

and that's how I ended up at Pete's.

Speaker:

Now Pete's is a very prestigious, um, dueling piano brand.

Speaker:

Like it's very hard to get your foot in the door there.

Speaker:

And I was working for them in Texas just as a sub, and that's

Speaker:

how I ended up landing the E.D.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: here in Nashville.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

So for the listener who isn't privvy to this, explain the dueling piano thing.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah, doing pianos is a very interesting concept

Speaker:

and I think everyone would have a different answer for this for sure.

Speaker:

but to me, you know, we have, we have two pianists.

Speaker:

They face each other, um, and we don't have a set list up there.

Speaker:

We take song requests.

Speaker:

the audience, so the audience can write down their favorite songs, they can

Speaker:

write down what they're celebrating.

Speaker:

If it's a birthday, they write down, you know, what, whatever they

Speaker:

would like to pay attention to us to pay attention to on the stage.

Speaker:

They bring it up to us and we play it, it's very chaotic

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Um, there's definitely a comedic element as well.

Speaker:

We bring people up on the stage and we make 'em feel special.

Speaker:

We play games with the audience.

Speaker:

We give away jello shots.

Speaker:

I mean, it's, it's a whole.

Speaker:

a whole night of shenanigans.

Speaker:

It's not just like, I'm gonna play a song and then my partner is gonna play

Speaker:

a song, and then I'm gonna play a song.

Speaker:

It's very cohesive, it's very fun.

Speaker:

Um, I mean, we'll, we'll go from Janice Joplin to Cardi

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: you know?

Speaker:

Um, so it's awesome.

Speaker:

It's, it's really, really fun.

Speaker:

I'm, I'm so

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: yeah.

Speaker:

We, we had a really great one in Denver.

Speaker:

We go do for a long time and, and.

Speaker:

You can't walk out of there.

Speaker:

Not smiling.

Speaker:

I mean, it was, it's always just a lot of fun, I think.

Speaker:

I think

Speaker:

everybody

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

And I

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: before you knock it right, everybody needs

Speaker:

to go check it out and uh, I.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: yeah,

Speaker:

and it's, you know, every club that you walk into does it differently.

Speaker:

Like, Howell is different than Pete, which is different than sluggers

Speaker:

in Chicago, which is different than New York and New York and Vegas.

Speaker:

You know, it, it's such a, it's such a broad concept and it really allows the

Speaker:

entertainer to shine because the way that I do the show is different than.

Speaker:

You know, somebody else on my team.

Speaker:

And it, it's so awesome to have all these personalities and all this talent

Speaker:

to create this one big cohesive ball of

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: energy,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Right, right.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: you know?

Speaker:

And it's it's so much fun.

Speaker:

It's, it really feels like I get paid to,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: a week, and then I walk, I walk home and

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: it's

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: But there's some, there's some entertainment aspect to this where.

Speaker:

It's really on you guys in a way to kind of lead

Speaker:

the entertainment, you know, and keep the momentum going and

Speaker:

keep the fun going and right.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I always tell people, you know, to treat the show with brand new doers

Speaker:

when they come in, they have no idea.

Speaker:

You know, they're like, how do I do this gig?

Speaker:

I'm like, treat the show like this is a house party and the audience,

Speaker:

or your guests, you know, and at the end of the night, you know,

Speaker:

you want this table from New York to be best friends with this table

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Oh, I'll cross the bar.

Speaker:

You know, it's, and that's really, it's so true, is what we're trying

Speaker:

to do is through music and we're trying to help people forget

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: for a

Speaker:

night, you know, and just come in and have fun and celebrate their birthdays,

Speaker:

and celebrate their bachelorette parties and just come in and have

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah, that's great.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

And we've talked about that before on other shows about.

Speaker:

Just for the music entertainer you are.

Speaker:

That is an important thing to keep in mind.

Speaker:

I think people are going to these things to kind of get away from it, so to speak.

Speaker:

You know,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: and,

Speaker:

just disconnect and have a grand time.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Even we, as the entertainers show

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: to forget about stuff

Speaker:

in our life, you know, it's like,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: that's great.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: it's

Speaker:

just as much benefit for

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: for them.

Speaker:

So

Speaker:

it's definitely a privilege to be in that

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: That's fun.

Speaker:

That's fun.

Speaker:

Well, and so you're married

Speaker:

and you do you get to perform with your husband much?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: I

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: You do.

Speaker:

So I, I wanna, let's pause that thought for a second and back up a little bit.

Speaker:

You have a, a pretty interesting how I met my husband story, I think, and,

Speaker:

and why don't you tell us who your husband is and then how you guys met.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah, so my husband is Jason Hartless, show appear on well.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yes.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Um, he and I'll, I'll let him, I'll leave most of his

Speaker:

intro for him when he comes on here, but, um, he drums full-time for Ted

Speaker:

Nugent has for the last, uh, 10 years.

Speaker:

And I met Jason when I showed up on the Ted Nugent 22 Detroit Muscle Tour.

Speaker:

Um, and when I showed up, you know, everybody was running around.

Speaker:

They're getting ready for the show, they're still setting up.

Speaker:

And I, I showed up and I asked our tour manager, who at the time

Speaker:

was Ted Emporellis, he, he's, he's tour managed for huge acts like

Speaker:

John Bon Jovi's with for years.

Speaker:

And I was like, Hey, Ted, like, where can I stand where I'm not

Speaker:

in the way of all this stuff?

Speaker:

'cause everyone's like going crazy.

Speaker:

like, oh, you can wait in there.

Speaker:

And he points off to this little room on the side in the back.

Speaker:

And I'm like, all right.

Speaker:

And I walk in there and there's Jason on his little drum pad and he is warming up.

Speaker:

He looks up and he's like, what is this girl doing in

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: And come to find out later, that was Jason's dressing room

Speaker:

and no one was supposed to be in there.

Speaker:

And the tour manager had sent me in there trying to set us.

Speaker:

Which

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: it's worked.

Speaker:

That's funny.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: which worked.

Speaker:

Um, and he, Jason, like, did not want to talk to me.

Speaker:

He was so shy, like he had no idea what to do.

Speaker:

He was just like not making eye contact.

Speaker:

I was like, this is not gonna be awkward.

Speaker:

Like, this man is gonna talk to me

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Oh funny.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: or not.

Speaker:

And so that's kind of how all that started and that's how we met.

Speaker:

And then I went out on stage with him later, and then

Speaker:

we became best friends and.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Then there you,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: We just celebrated our one year wedding anniversary

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: that's great.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

Well, so you guys now, how did you get hooked up with, with.

Speaker:

Ted's tour and in the first place.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah, so I got called to open for him last minute,

Speaker:

like five days before the show.

Speaker:

He was performing in Waco, Texas, and they're opening band

Speaker:

had lost their lead singer.

Speaker:

And I got called in.

Speaker:

It was just, it was a set of like, Zeppelin and

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: stuff.

Speaker:

uh, it was one of those like domino effect things.

Speaker:

It just, it was crazy that Ted and Shemane just happened to be there

Speaker:

early and they heard the whole set and, uh, get a call from an unknown

Speaker:

number on my phone the next day.

Speaker:

I almost didn't answer it.

Speaker:

And it was Ted and he was like, would you wanna come out and sing

Speaker:

some songs on my tour this year?

Speaker:

And I was like,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: we

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Gimme,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: you know?

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: gimme one second.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

And so that's kind of how that happened.

Speaker:

It started out with just the, the Texas chapter of the tour.

Speaker:

'cause that's where I lived.

Speaker:

So I was able to, to make it out to all those.

Speaker:

And then it kind of became more, more than that.

Speaker:

Um, and then this year I finally got to do the Freedom Hill Amphitheater in

Speaker:

Michigan, which was a bucket list for me.

Speaker:

'cause that's where both Ted and Jason are from.

Speaker:

Um, so that

Speaker:

was

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Very nice.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: And so, okay, let's.

Speaker:

Talk a little bit about the touring session work and

Speaker:

then also your work at Pete's

Speaker:

and

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: with Sound City Entertainment, which we'll talk about.

Speaker:

Like how are you one, how are you juggling all of this?

Speaker:

Or are you, I guess I we were under the assumption you're juggling it right.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Well Jason, Jason and I, I'm really lucky to have him because everything that I'm

Speaker:

not good at, he's good at and everything that he's not good at, I'm good at.

Speaker:

so we kind of all of these things, you know, like I just, I just finished

Speaker:

four nights back to back at Pete's and I had no energy to do anything else.

Speaker:

And so he was the one that was handling like the accounting for our company.

Speaker:

handling all the stuff that I couldn't get to.

Speaker:

And then there's some weeks when he's on the road where I'm the one that does that.

Speaker:

know?

Speaker:

So it is really, I don't know if I could do it without him.

Speaker:

Um, I don't think there's any way could pull off that kind of responsibility

Speaker:

and schedule without cloning myself at

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: um, yeah, I really, I really make my

Speaker:

mental health a priority and.

Speaker:

I've got severe A DHD, so making lists is like

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: to make sure I get to everything, you know?

Speaker:

Um, yeah, I, I like being busy.

Speaker:

I like having all these things going

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: once, and so

Speaker:

it's good.

Speaker:

It's really great.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: What, uh, what's your favorite part of the dueling

Speaker:

piano format and in that area of entertainment, what's something

Speaker:

musicians can maybe learn from that to grow and build from, or get exposure

Speaker:

or, you know, what's that look like?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah, I think, you know, to, to do doing pianos,

Speaker:

it's way harder than it looks.

Speaker:

And I say that because you have to be pretty fluid on.

Speaker:

All of the instruments and be able to change around at a moment's notice.

Speaker:

And I think, you know, at the end of the day we, we play other people's

Speaker:

music for a living, you know?

Speaker:

I think as long as we don't lose sight of what we're trying to do,

Speaker:

which is make the audience the star, like it's about the audience.

Speaker:

It's about them coming in and giving us their business and giving us

Speaker:

their time, and being respectful of that, and us being grateful for that.

Speaker:

And I think.

Speaker:

You know, staying humble is really, really important.

Speaker:

And reminding yourself like, Hey, there's a lot of talented people out there, and

Speaker:

I'm the one that's getting to do this.

Speaker:

I'm the one that

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: the stage.

Speaker:

I'm the

Speaker:

one that has This privilege to be a facilitator of this night

Speaker:

and this person's life right now.

Speaker:

know?

Speaker:

And I think as long as it always is centered that.

Speaker:

It is not always about you, you and your abilities and you know, it's,

Speaker:

you wanna create a party and create an environment and I think as long as you

Speaker:

don't lose sight of that, everything else just kind of comes along.

Speaker:

You know, I think staying humble is so, so important.

Speaker:

And I know I live in like one of the big three cities.

Speaker:

There's LA, Nashville, and there's New York and there's,

Speaker:

you know, there's some ego's out

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: sure.

Speaker:

Sure, But it seems to be a recurring theme though.

Speaker:

It, you know, and other people we've talked to there, there is

Speaker:

that recurring theme of humility

Speaker:

and

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: yeah,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: your fans are the reason you're up there still.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: And even for the guys that have been at the longer you're

Speaker:

at it, I, it seems like the more you appreciate that, I think, but.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And I, I think the industry, like, it's, it's so tough and it always has

Speaker:

been, and it's always been competitive and it's always been, you know, dog

Speaker:

eat dog and sometimes, and I staying above that and staying above, you know.

Speaker:

Getting into the fray and getting into the mix and just staying grateful.

Speaker:

You know, I'm, I'm really, really lucky to be where I'm at right now.

Speaker:

You know, where people are, are really hurting for work and, and there's

Speaker:

the whole component of ai, which, you

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah,

Speaker:

there's a whole nother show on that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: later.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Like, it, it's, it's, so grateful to be one of the few people that

Speaker:

has this work and this consistent opportunity and that will

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

There's this humility aspect, and then there's the entertainment aspect, right?

Speaker:

I've gotta be, you gotta have a certain personality to, to draw the crowd

Speaker:

and to, to, to draw them out and, and entertain, whether it's

Speaker:

dueling pianos or whether it's on stage in front of thousands.

Speaker:

You know, there's that aspect of you've gotta be on your

Speaker:

game when you're on stage,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yep.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: you know?

Speaker:

And, and some of that attributes to keeping up on your mental health.

Speaker:

We've, we've had these conversations with people, making sure your mental health is

Speaker:

in check when you can, and, and so you can get up there and be on top of your game.

Speaker:

And, and you also have a perspective, which is also a common theme on

Speaker:

kind of physical health, right, too.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah, a hundred percent.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And you really, you really have to take it seriously.

Speaker:

This is something that Jason and I, my husband, were, we're just

Speaker:

talking about the other day.

Speaker:

It's like, you know, he just turned 30 last year and I'll

Speaker:

be 30 coming up here soon.

Speaker:

And it's like, we really wanna give ourselves the best chance at being in this

Speaker:

industry for as long as we possibly can.

Speaker:

And that really means that you have to live like an athlete.

Speaker:

You know, and there's no other way around it.

Speaker:

'cause it just starts

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yes, for now.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: you know?

Speaker:

It just gets harder and harder.

Speaker:

Um, so I think I'm a big believer in implementing those healthy

Speaker:

habits early on creating a lifestyle out of it, um, is really

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So what are your maybe non-negotiables during heavy week shows or,

Speaker:

or what's maybe overrated?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah, I, uh, I drink a gallon of water

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Okay.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: no

Speaker:

matter what.

Speaker:

Um, I'm a big hot yoga fan.

Speaker:

Um, I deal with a lot of anxiety in my life, and so I kind of carry my tension.

Speaker:

my body, you know, and when I'm like really anxious, I'll literally just

Speaker:

kind of sit like this, which creates all these issues like in my neck

Speaker:

and, which is horrible for singing And, uh, you know, yoga, I'll go

Speaker:

probably four or five times a week.

Speaker:

And it really helps just to keep me like limber and stretched out, which

Speaker:

is really important for, you know, not just singing, but piano playing too.

Speaker:

And, um, eating healthy.

Speaker:

I've, uh, I've got celiac disease, so I. Can't eat bread or pasta or anything.

Speaker:

So that's kind of helpful that I'm forced to be But um, eating

Speaker:

healthy is really, really

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Sound City Entertainment.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: How did this get started?

Speaker:

What is, what is Sound City Entertainment?

Speaker:

How'd you guys get it started?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah, sound City Entertainment is the company

Speaker:

that Jason and I co-own, and we provide various entertainment to

Speaker:

clients, um, all across the world.

Speaker:

that could be doing panels or it could be an acoustic guitar

Speaker:

player, it could be a juggler, it

Speaker:

could be whatever The client needs.

Speaker:

Um, and we, we provide those services to different clients.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

Um, and it got started because we had this opportunity with,

Speaker:

um, Park West Art Galleries.

Speaker:

They were looking for entertainment and they, um, they'll have, you know,

Speaker:

70 events across the US throughout the year, and they wanted Dualing Pianos

Speaker:

and as well as some other things.

Speaker:

We just brought Eric Martin in a couple of weeks

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: but I just didn't wanna deal with

Speaker:

like, the business side of it.

Speaker:

I didn't feel equipped, I didn't feel I could handle that well.

Speaker:

Um, which is where Jason comes in.

Speaker:

'cause Jason graduated from Berkeley in with a music

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Okay, good.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Two, our two forces kind of collided and we were

Speaker:

like, Hey, let's, let's do this company and see what we can, what

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: So

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: that's been, uh, for how long now?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: we started that, say in the beginning of

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Okay.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

And so far, so good.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: So brand new?

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

So far So

Speaker:

great.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Good.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: We're, um, we're really grateful to, um.

Speaker:

Be able to

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: people.

Speaker:

Um, and we, we often go out on our own gigs, which is where, you

Speaker:

know, we get to play together and

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So from the artists, from the musician standpoint, how can they get connected

Speaker:

with, you know, companies like yourself and, and, and what's one way.

Speaker:

Maybe some advice you would give to artists who are trying to get themselves

Speaker:

out there, get connected in every way possible, you know, and, and get

Speaker:

that exposure, get things booked.

Speaker:

You know, what, what, what advice can you give on that side?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah, I think know your brand.

Speaker:

I think if you come in with a, a very developed, solid um and product, then

Speaker:

that's really important so that you can be like, Hey, this is what I can offer.

Speaker:

You know?

Speaker:

Um, I think really working hard on your skills.

Speaker:

And not money or not worrying about making it to the big stage, not worrying

Speaker:

about fame, just sticking with your course and sticking with your guns.

Speaker:

And don't ever

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Don't ever let anybody take your dream away, you

Speaker:

know, because these things take time.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: These things take

Speaker:

time.

Speaker:

you know, even Jason and I, we've been at this for years and years and

Speaker:

years and, you know, I, I only went out with Nugent in 22 and I'd been

Speaker:

in the industry for like 20 years at that point, you know, so things.

Speaker:

You know, they take time.

Speaker:

And I would say just try not to, to, to be discouraged.

Speaker:

You know, when

Speaker:

things don't as fast as you think they should or as well

Speaker:

as you think they should.

Speaker:

Just, you know, remember your passion or

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Um, and I think everything else will happen along the way.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: I love the don't ever quit, you know,

Speaker:

that's the, that's the thing.

Speaker:

That's hard, I think for artists is like the long road

Speaker:

to, you know, for, for most, for the average person at least, you

Speaker:

know, it's, it's that long road and you've gotta really, as, as

Speaker:

I would say, think long range.

Speaker:

You know, you have to

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: looking down the road, what are you working towards, you know?

Speaker:

And keep work in that direction and, and don't give up.

Speaker:

I love it.

Speaker:

And.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: And a

Speaker:

lot of people, a lot of people do, which is unfortunate.

Speaker:

You know, it's, sorry, I'm gonna cut you off.

Speaker:

Um, know, and I, know, I'd be lying to you if I said that I never

Speaker:

thought about quitting before.

Speaker:

I mean, that's definitely crossed mind in my husband's minds many times.

Speaker:

Many times.

Speaker:

But there's this, like, there's this thing inside both of us that

Speaker:

like every time we've tried to quit.

Speaker:

We end up coming right back to it because it's not an option for us.

Speaker:

There's something in us that prevents us from leaving what we

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: and yeah.

Speaker:

We'll go on a sabbatical.

Speaker:

Yeah, we'll take a hiatus.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

We'll, you know, we'll take a break or whatever, it's just not possible for us to

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: We're just, we're

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: It's, well, it's part of you.

Speaker:

It's like, you know, the music side through and through, you know, in,

Speaker:

in your life.

Speaker:

And, and that's like, I guess like losing an appendage, you know, to, to quit.

Speaker:

That kind of thing.

Speaker:

You're like, I'm, I'm, I'm not quite ready to lose my arm.

Speaker:

So, you know, you get right back into it.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: exactly.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: not quite ready for that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, well, let's talk, let's talk money for a minute now.

Speaker:

What is in from your vantage point, what's, say what's a reliable way

Speaker:

you've earned income through music across seasons, and maybe one lever

Speaker:

you're leaning into this year even?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, I'm, I'm, really, really lucky dueling pianos, has

Speaker:

always been there for me.

Speaker:

It's, I, I tell people it's my nine to five.

Speaker:

And it's so, it's so awesome because I can go out with Ted or I can go out with

Speaker:

whoever and I come back and dueling pianos

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: for me.

Speaker:

and I know many, many musicians are not in that, um, in that situation.

Speaker:

And so, you know, I'm, I'm really grateful to to have that always there for me.

Speaker:

Um, I know that a lot of musicians when they're off the road.

Speaker:

They'll, you know, session work is big here and in Broadway, like,

Speaker:

they'll pick up shifts on Broadway.

Speaker:

Um, which is really unfortunate because of how little Broadway pays these days.

Speaker:

You know, it's, it's really terrible to have all these

Speaker:

people getting paid, you know,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: for a four

Speaker:

hour show.

Speaker:

It was really insane.

Speaker:

Um, I, Jason is always like, man, you're in the, the 1% that has consistent work.

Speaker:

He's like, nobody has consistent work and I'm just.

Speaker:

I am so grateful to, to be there, but at the same time, like my heart goes

Speaker:

out to all of my friends that are not

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: boat, you

Speaker:

know?

Speaker:

And that it's really heartbreaking to see these people with all of this talent

Speaker:

that are struggling, you know, and, and with this technology now, and the way

Speaker:

you know the world is it's just getting

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Right,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: day.

Speaker:

You know?

Speaker:

Hopefully it'll balance out and turn itself back around, but right

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: right, right.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: you know?

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: So what's some of the best advice, best financial

Speaker:

advice or career advice another musician or mentor has given you?

Speaker:

I.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Um, always

Speaker:

have a contingency plan.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Love it.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Um, have a backup plan.

Speaker:

I don't mean that like, you know, make sure you have a degree in

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: What you wanna do,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: for it.

Speaker:

Like, by all

Speaker:

means, mean, you know, have a plan for the

Speaker:

dry season, you know, and have a plan for when things aren't going

Speaker:

exactly how you expected them to go.

Speaker:

You know, I, um, I injured my voice in 2023 and I was touring

Speaker:

and I got COVID that turned into

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Oh man.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: I coughed so hard.

Speaker:

Um, my right vocal cord started bleeding.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Gosh.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Which sucked, sucked.

Speaker:

And I had to take eight weeks off.

Speaker:

So that was two months of no income.

Speaker:

And I didn't really safety net or a contingency plan, so

Speaker:

I just kind of sucked it up,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: really, like got my butt kicked on bills because I

Speaker:

didn't have, know, any sort of plans.

Speaker:

I just didn't think that was gonna happen to me, you know?

Speaker:

But it really opened my eyes.

Speaker:

And I think the most important thing I could say on, on that is make sure you

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: net.

Speaker:

Um, whether it's financially or otherwise, you know, because I mean,

Speaker:

I could fall down my stairs out, out of the studio coming down from this

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Right,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: and break

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Right,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: You know,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: right.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: it's such a

Speaker:

fickle, um, thing that we do.

Speaker:

And so I think being prepared.

Speaker:

if God forbid, something were to happen and you couldn't

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: while or, you know, you ran into some,

Speaker:

some financial issues to have

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yep.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: for you.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah, there's a pretty common theme throughout

Speaker:

in, in the music industry where

Speaker:

the planning ahead thing is trouble, let's call it, you know, it's, it

Speaker:

spells trouble for people 'cause.

Speaker:

I, the industry is built on almost a struggle till you make it struggle,

Speaker:

struggle, struggle, struggle.

Speaker:

You know?

Speaker:

And you're that literal starving artist at times trying to make it.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: And you want to, you want to build.

Speaker:

And so you go, okay, well we're gonna, we're gonna penny pinch, we're gonna

Speaker:

penny pinch until we have enough.

Speaker:

You know?

Speaker:

And, and I get that mindset and that, and that's a very common theme.

Speaker:

But every single musician I talk to, this is a conversation.

Speaker:

How can we, how can we buffer that somehow, or I wish I would've focused

Speaker:

more on buffering that ahead of time rather than waiting until the, the

Speaker:

time is now when I really need the money and I don't have it, you know?

Speaker:

And, and yeah.

Speaker:

And we see it all the time.

Speaker:

You see it, you know?

Speaker:

And, and, and God bless 'em all.

Speaker:

I mean, when there's.

Speaker:

The GoFundMe pops up, incident happens and the GoFundMe pops up and, and the fans

Speaker:

wanna jump in and help and that's great, but it's really a conversation, you know,

Speaker:

and that's one of the reasons I do what I do in helping musicians is like, let,

Speaker:

let's try to get away from that scramble mode, you know, and try to get away from

Speaker:

the, I am in so much trouble tomorrow.

Speaker:

If I get injured, you know, really, it's a scary place to be.

Speaker:

It is.

Speaker:

It really is.

Speaker:

Uh, and, and that's why I think it's, I think it's important

Speaker:

and, and every musician agrees that that's out there making it,

Speaker:

you know, like it's so important

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: to be finding that buffer for you to finding that safety net.

Speaker:

Finding a way to, I'll say, warehouse your money a little bit along the way,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: yeah.

Speaker:

Oh

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: you know?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

I think it's, won't find a single successful musician who.

Speaker:

Didn't struggle

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: You know, even, even the people that, that had the

Speaker:

funding to start and, and had all the right stuff, you know, it takes, it's

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: It's hard work.

Speaker:

for everybody and I think that I, if you are out there and you are getting paid in

Speaker:

any it's 40 bucks it at Tootsies downtown or wherever it's $400,000 because you're

Speaker:

touring with Post Malone or whatever.

Speaker:

You know, if, if you're doing that, if you're getting paid to

Speaker:

play music, you've already made

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: And I think people should stop being so

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: you know, and give themselves.

Speaker:

And I, I'm like the biggest person that, that is really hard on myself.

Speaker:

And it, it's never enough.

Speaker:

It's never enough that sometimes to look back and see.

Speaker:

What I've come from and how much, you know, I've accomplished in my life and

Speaker:

how much I hope to continue to accomplish.

Speaker:

And I think there's a beauty in, in giving yourself

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: you know, and not comparing yourself to other people.

Speaker:

You know, it's just because, you know, your, your friend

Speaker:

over here is touring with Steely

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: yeah,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: You know,

Speaker:

it doesn't make what you're doing any

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: yeah.

Speaker:

sure,

Speaker:

sure, sure.

Speaker:

Well, it's for everybody, I think we are our own worst critic.

Speaker:

In many ways.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: And, and that's it.

Speaker:

That's it.

Speaker:

That's it.

Speaker:

so you and I met through this same idea of how do, how do you build a

Speaker:

system, uh, in a place that builds a buffer for you that you can access

Speaker:

along the way and is your safety net?

Speaker:

That is something you could fall back on.

Speaker:

It's also something you can use along the way too.

Speaker:

And, and that's, you know, you met someone a while back that taught

Speaker:

you about this and, and they introduced us and, and here we are,

Speaker:

you know, having this conversation.

Speaker:

And, and I think that's great and I, I was gonna have you talk about that for a

Speaker:

second about, you know, one of the main things I teach musicians is this vehicle,

Speaker:

what we call the Infinite Banking Concept.

Speaker:

And it is this.

Speaker:

The concept is about how do we put our money into places that we control,

Speaker:

into something that we have control over, versus constantly putting

Speaker:

our money into something, something else that we have no control over.

Speaker:

Like, for example, putting our money in the stock market, for example.

Speaker:

We don't have any control.

Speaker:

The market's control,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Right.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: uh, being controlled by debt.

Speaker:

The, the bank, the debt instrument is what controls us once we've

Speaker:

gotten out of control with that debt.

Speaker:

Or we're constantly leveraging, you know, in the music space, maybe it's labels.

Speaker:

I'm not gonna camp there.

Speaker:

Maybe it's getting over leveraged on, you know, with labels.

Speaker:

And now you, you don't have any control.

Speaker:

And so how can you build up a system?

Speaker:

What vehicles allow you to build something up that you have control over?

Speaker:

Over That money and, and enter the Infinite Banking Concept.

Speaker:

And that's what it's about.

Speaker:

And of course, the vehicle that we show people how to do this is properly

Speaker:

structured dividend paying, whole life insurance from a mutual carrier.

Speaker:

I see that 10 times fast.

Speaker:

But, but

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: it's a mouthful.

Speaker:

But I, I'm not gonna get into it for this show, but it's a mouthful

Speaker:

because it's very particular

Speaker:

for the listener.

Speaker:

You heard a few words there and you're like, oh gosh, that sounds boring.

Speaker:

I'm curious, when you first heard about this, what was your first impressions

Speaker:

and then your understanding of it now, how do you see that being impactful

Speaker:

in your own life, in your own career?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, so when I first heard about it, um, I was a part of like a, a video class.

Speaker:

And if I'm being honest with you, I was like so confused on

Speaker:

how it worked.

Speaker:

I was

Speaker:

like, what do you mean?

Speaker:

I like, I put money in and then it grows by itself and there's no tax, but how

Speaker:

do I, you know, like it was very, um, it was not clear to me at first, and so I

Speaker:

really spent time trying to understand it and I decided to open my own policy.

Speaker:

because I got tired of trying to go spend money that is mine and being

Speaker:

told, oh, you can only, you know, spend $3,000 as your daily limit.

Speaker:

It's like, that's my

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Um, and it was very appealing to me to have a,

Speaker:

a, a concept that would work that way, um, that would be there for me

Speaker:

if I were to injure myself again.

Speaker:

Or if, you know, maybe not even like worst case scenario, if I wanted to buy a house.

Speaker:

Or buy a car, you know, and have it controlled by me 110%.

Speaker:

That was really, really appealing, um, to me to be able to have the control

Speaker:

my own money, since that's not really something that I had experienced before.

Speaker:

Um, and so now I, I wanna say I'm a year in and I'm funding

Speaker:

it still, and it's, it's great.

Speaker:

It's growing, it's doing exactly what

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: do, and I think I have that condition.

Speaker:

I'm more in control of the choices that I make.

Speaker:

I don't have to take out loans anymore if I don't want to.

Speaker:

I don't have to rely on, on institutions or other people for money.

Speaker:

I have my own

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I think that's what's important for musicians is understanding, you know, like

Speaker:

in this example, this vehicle would be great to buffer when you have this vocal

Speaker:

injury and you're out for eight weeks.

Speaker:

Yeah, you have this now emergency fund that's, it's

Speaker:

different than a savings account

Speaker:

because

Speaker:

you can, you can access this quote, emergency fund, but that emergency

Speaker:

fund is actually still growing

Speaker:

as if the money never left.

Speaker:

And then you could backfill that emergency fund at your own pace down

Speaker:

the road once you've gotten past it and while you're not using it.

Speaker:

It's there to be used on other things if you need some money for Right.

Speaker:

Touring, for equipment, for

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: these kinds of things.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And I think, you know, I'm about to have to make a really big purchase

Speaker:

'cause my keyboard is super old.

Speaker:

I've been playing on it since high school and I like straight

Speaker:

up, doesn't work anymore.

Speaker:

And I really want to get a Yamaha Montage and they cost

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: and I, there's no way I would be able

Speaker:

to, do that in my normal life.

Speaker:

You know, there.

Speaker:

I couldn't just go and buy this keyboard now if I didn't have this banking policy.

Speaker:

But now that I have this banking policy, I don't have to take things out on a loan.

Speaker:

I don't have to do anything I don't wanna do.

Speaker:

I can pull from my own bank, my own banking concept, which is me.

Speaker:

I'm in control, I can go buy this Yamaha tomorrow with no strings

Speaker:

attached and pay myself back on

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: you

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

But it's that idea of investing in yourself along the way.

Speaker:

It's, it's that idea of just, Hey, every penny I earn, commit to pushing

Speaker:

some of it, a small percentage of it

Speaker:

through this kind of vehicle because of all the advantages.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: know, it, it is a, I would call it a Both/And Strategy.

Speaker:

We're not, you know, a lot of people want to see this as just

Speaker:

a, a glorified savings account.

Speaker:

You know, okay, well, I wanna put money into this.

Speaker:

I need to save money.

Speaker:

Because we have this perception, we, we think linearly.

Speaker:

and we, we want to put money into a savings account.

Speaker:

And then when we are ready to buy whatever, we then spend that money

Speaker:

and that savings account goes to zero, and then we start saving again.

Speaker:

And I, I, I'm obviously biased, but I love this type of vehicle because even

Speaker:

though we're gonna access that money.

Speaker:

We, we were putting the money into some small growth vehicle, not an

Speaker:

investment product, but it's growing along the way, and then we're

Speaker:

accessing it, and then it can still grow even though we've accessed it.

Speaker:

And then we can put the money back at our own pace.

Speaker:

Because what was your alternative?

Speaker:

You were gonna go finance it.

Speaker:

You're gonna finance a $5,000 keyboard, and then you have another payment,

Speaker:

or you're gonna save up for it, and so that money's still coming outta

Speaker:

your pocket until you have enough.

Speaker:

So either way, that money's coming outta your pocket.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I think, you know, to be able to have the control is everything.

Speaker:

And there's so many, so many avenues and so many situations where musicians can get

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: of when it comes

Speaker:

to this.

Speaker:

You know, tours are expensive.

Speaker:

Albums are expensive.

Speaker:

Um, and you know, and my husband and I have very different opinions on this,

Speaker:

a hundred percent in favor of the DIY musician, you know, because I've seen a

Speaker:

lot of, of really talented artists who a lot of really, really good people taken

Speaker:

advantage of by these record labels.

Speaker:

Um, 'cause they don't know what they're signing.

Speaker:

And

Speaker:

a lot of times,

Speaker:

you know, like the example in your book is perfect.

Speaker:

So one about, you know, we'll give you the $60,000 loan, but

Speaker:

you have to, you know, recoup,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: amount of dollars and it's, that's half a million dollars

Speaker:

worth of music that you gotta sell.

Speaker:

You know, and that's just not, you know, unless you're one of the.

Speaker:

Billion people, that is an overnight sensation, which is

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Not that it can't

Speaker:

happen, but it just, it's, it's rare, you know?

Speaker:

Then you're, you're stuck and not only do you not have rights to

Speaker:

your stuff, you know, now you're, you've got this big IOU as well, you

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: it's just, it's

Speaker:

complicated and it can get really tricky, especially for

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yep.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: for sure.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, and I think sometimes losing sight of, as we talked about

Speaker:

earlier, the thinking long range.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: You kind of lose sight of that.

Speaker:

And, and same with this type of vehicle.

Speaker:

You really need to think long range.

Speaker:

What's it gonna do for you over time?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Right.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: tomorrow,

Speaker:

but over time,

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: you know?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: That's.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: definitely grateful

Speaker:

for it.

Speaker:

I now feel.

Speaker:

I know how I, I, I don't want to feel ever again.

Speaker:

And that's how I felt when I injured myself, where I had no control and even

Speaker:

know if I was gonna get to sing again.

Speaker:

I didn't know what was gonna be returned to me.

Speaker:

And I was like, crap.

Speaker:

Like I have nothing.

Speaker:

Like I have, have no playing, being, um, and I know that I don't

Speaker:

want to feel like that again.

Speaker:

And so I'm really happy that I have this, this avenue behind me, this, this concept

Speaker:

that I can contribute to and that I know is gonna be there for me when I need it.

Speaker:

You know?

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

So let's start landing on the plane and I want you to tell the listeners

Speaker:

a little bit about, you know, we talked about Sound City, sound City

Speaker:

Entertainment a few minutes ago, and just what you guys do there and how

Speaker:

they can connect to you that way.

Speaker:

And any closing advice, financial advice for musicians, uh, that you have.

Speaker:

We're all ears right now.

Speaker:

The floor is yours as we.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, like I mentioned, you know, Sound City Entertainment is all

Speaker:

about providing the top quality.

Speaker:

Talent and musicians and entertainers to our clients.

Speaker:

Um, and we have various needs at various times for various things coming up all

Speaker:

the time, and we're always looking to expand our roster of talented people.

Speaker:

And so if people are interested in, in becoming a part of that, they can reach

Speaker:

out to myself or on business cards and stuff like that, but probably the fastest

Speaker:

is through, um, my Instagram and we're, Jason and I are very, uh, approachable

Speaker:

and reachable, um, through that.

Speaker:

And so we would love to, to connect with, with musicians and, and

Speaker:

talent and, and stuff like that.

Speaker:

So, um, and what was your other question?

Speaker:

Sorry.

Speaker:

Um, oh, what advice that was the other part.

Speaker:

Um.

Speaker:

Just keep doing what you're doing and don't, don't ever give

Speaker:

up and don't get discouraged.

Speaker:

I mean, it is tough out here, but when you believe in yourself and you believe

Speaker:

in what you're doing and you're working hard, the stuff will, it'll find you.

Speaker:

find you in

Speaker:

its own time.

Speaker:

And

Speaker:

something that got said to me when I was young is A, what's meant for you?

Speaker:

We'll find you.

Speaker:

You won't be able to get away from it.

Speaker:

And I think that's so.

Speaker:

So powerful and so important.

Speaker:

And I know it's cliche to be like, oh yeah, it's work hard,

Speaker:

but it's, it's so, it's so true.

Speaker:

And I think if you stay humble and take the time to really, really get good at

Speaker:

what you do, whether it's singing or drumming or playing bass or painting,

Speaker:

whatever it is, whatever your thing is, do everything in your power to

Speaker:

get as good as you possibly can at it, and everything else is gonna find you.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: That's great.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Every show we wrap up with what we call final riffs.

Speaker:

Basically short questions, quick answers, snapshots to take us home.

Speaker:

So the first thing that comes to mind, and you can always say pass if you wanna pass.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Are you ready?

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Iron Maiden.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Iron Maiden.

Speaker:

That's great.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: What band or artist will you never get tired of listening to?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Iron Maiden,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: That's so funny.

Speaker:

Good.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

If you could share the stage with anyone, who would it be?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: well, iron Maiden, but also Prince.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Besides Iron Reen.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: I'm a huge, huge Prince fan.

Speaker:

I would've loved to share the stage with him.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Most embarrassing gig or performance?

Speaker:

Fail.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Uh,

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Everybody's got one.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: that I was touring when I was in high school

Speaker:

and I went to go do a solo and my keyboard stand completely broke and

Speaker:

my whole rig fell onto the ground.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Oh my goodness.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: was

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Oh my goodness.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: moment.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: One city or rev or one city or venue you

Speaker:

will never forget playing in.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Freedom Hill Amphitheater in Detroit, Michigan.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Okay.

Speaker:

If you were not doing music.

Speaker:

Which we can't imagine.

Speaker:

What would you be doing?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Um, I would probably be a personal trainer or something

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Think so.

Speaker:

Yeah?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Yeah?

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Good.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

What is a non-music hobby or passion of yours?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: I love hot yoga so much.

Speaker:

I would do it every

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Yeah.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: muscles allowed.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: All right.

Speaker:

Coffee, tea or something stronger.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: Tea and something stronger.

Speaker:

Tea and

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Tea and something stronger.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

Uh, any pets and what are their names?

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: I have a dog.

Speaker:

He's a blue healer.

Speaker:

He's seven years old.

Speaker:

His name is Prince.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Pr,

Speaker:

the dog.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: prince the dog.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: That's great.

Speaker:

Lexxi Garza-Hartless: in the, but.

Speaker:

Jason K Powers: Very cool.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:
