Shownotes

Do you often have those mornings where you’re in a hectic mess saying to yourself, "I really need to get more organised," or find yourself at night staring at the contents of your bare fridge with a lingering feeling of exhaustion?

You’re not alone.

Many of us grapple with these everyday stressors and life feels a little overwhelming, but what if I told you there’s a way to alleviate this daily chaos? By automating small aspects of your routine, you can create a calmer, more organised life and achieve that elusive feeling of organisational success.

When I talk about automation, I’m not referring to AI, robots or large-scale industrial processes. Instead, the focus is on practical strategies to simplify your daily tasks, allowing you to run on autopilot and eliminate unnecessary stress.

In this episode, I go through some of my favourite systems and routines that have saved me thousands of hours of unnecessary overwhelm.

Being organised surprisingly offers great flexibility. You can eliminate unnecessary stressors and open yourself to more options, chances, and fun. Living life on your terms becomes possible when you remove dependencies and time-wasters from your routine.

Remember, "nothing changes if nothing changes." Wishing for a calmer day won’t make it happen, but you have the power to create it for yourself. And that truly is a gift worth giving yourself.

Speaker:

Do you often have one of those mornings

Speaker:

where you say to yourself, I need to

Speaker:

get more organized or find yourself at

Speaker:

night, staring at the contents of your

Speaker:

fridge with a feeling of exhaustion.

Speaker:

There are some of these everyday

Speaker:

tasks that we can start to automate.

Speaker:

And in doing so, this can be

Speaker:

the key to you achieving that

Speaker:

feeling of organizational success.

Speaker:

Now, automation doesn't relate to robots

Speaker:

or doing things on an industrial scale.

Speaker:

Automation in this sense.

Speaker:

Takes the everyday tasks and sorts

Speaker:

them out so that you can run on

Speaker:

automatic, removing unnecessary stress.

Speaker:

For example, picking out what you

Speaker:

are wearing for the week in advance

Speaker:

means each morning you automatically

Speaker:

know what you're going to wear.

Speaker:

For many people, that's an everyday

Speaker:

stressor that could be removed

Speaker:

by simply deciding in advance.

Speaker:

So let's start automating your world.

Speaker:

First, what are your stress points?

Speaker:

I commonly hear of two areas.

Speaker:

One being mornings and the chaos

Speaker:

of getting organized for the day.

Speaker:

And the other is dinners.

Speaker:

Today, we'll go into these subjects

Speaker:

in more detail, but if your area of

Speaker:

daily stress is different, please

Speaker:

use the concepts discussed and

Speaker:

identify opportunities to apply

Speaker:

these methods to your situation.

Speaker:

Mornings can be hectic, whether

Speaker:

you are living on your own,

Speaker:

sharing a house or have a family.

Speaker:

I have lived in all of these

Speaker:

situations over the years, and I

Speaker:

used to stress myself out with trying

Speaker:

to do too much in should not feel

Speaker:

like you've run a marathon by 9am.

Speaker:

We always hear people saying, if you need

Speaker:

more time in the morning, get up earlier.

Speaker:

Unfortunately, unless you can shift your

Speaker:

overall daily commitments to create a

Speaker:

later start to the day for yourself, all

Speaker:

of those people are absolutely right.

Speaker:

The benefits of getting up earlier to

Speaker:

have a calm morning, a morning that you

Speaker:

have created for yourself are enormous.

Speaker:

The removal of stress can have an

Speaker:

amazingly fast positive impact on

Speaker:

your physical and mental health.

Speaker:

You will find yourself more alert and

Speaker:

more productive throughout the day.

Speaker:

When you start the day on your terms.

Speaker:

So first up, what would you

Speaker:

like your mornings to look like?

Speaker:

Make sure you incorporate

Speaker:

time for yourself.

Speaker:

This includes exercise.

Speaker:

If you prefer to do that in the mornings,

Speaker:

as well as personal growth activities.

Speaker:

These can be meditating,

Speaker:

reading, journaling, learning.

Speaker:

This can also be a time to put 30 minutes

Speaker:

to working towards achieving a life goal.

Speaker:

Identify the areas where

Speaker:

you start to feel rushed.

Speaker:

Are you rushed because you need more

Speaker:

time for the task or because you are

Speaker:

organizing other people or because

Speaker:

you've left it until the last minute?

Speaker:

Do you find that you commonly forget

Speaker:

about things you need to get done?

Speaker:

All of these are areas for you to look

Speaker:

and review and reflect for yourself.

Speaker:

Let's look at some of the common stress

Speaker:

points experienced in the morning

Speaker:

and discuss options for removing

Speaker:

them or lessening their impact.

Speaker:

Getting ready.

Speaker:

You know how long you need

Speaker:

for your personal admin to get

Speaker:

yourself ready for the day.

Speaker:

Where can you remove

Speaker:

decisions from your morning?

Speaker:

For example, by deciding what you're

Speaker:

going to wear the evening before.

Speaker:

Look at the weather, look at

Speaker:

the activities of the next day.

Speaker:

Pick out clothes and place them

Speaker:

wherever appropriate for you.

Speaker:

If you need changes of clothes

Speaker:

or gym gear, have this packed and

Speaker:

ready always the evening before.

Speaker:

If you have a family, this

Speaker:

rule should apply to them also.

Speaker:

Get everyone in the habit of getting

Speaker:

ready for the next day the night before.

Speaker:

If you are super ambitious,

Speaker:

you can always try organizing

Speaker:

yourself for the week ahead.

Speaker:

See what works for you.

Speaker:

I tend to just do it the night before.

Speaker:

Preparing lunch.

Speaker:

Whether for yourself or

Speaker:

others, this activity seems

Speaker:

to derail a lot of households.

Speaker:

I try my best to keep

Speaker:

lunches really simple.

Speaker:

Whether I'm in the office or working

Speaker:

from home, leftovers are a winner.

Speaker:

I make bigger dinners so that

Speaker:

lunch is ready for the next day.

Speaker:

When you are planning your dinners

Speaker:

for the coming week, just factor

Speaker:

in lunches and make sure you've got

Speaker:

that extra amount of ingredients.

Speaker:

If you need to make a lunch,

Speaker:

Always do this the evening before.

Speaker:

Even making the decision that you

Speaker:

will buy lunch the next day, the

Speaker:

night before, will remove stress

Speaker:

and save decisions the next morning.

Speaker:

If you need to organize

Speaker:

school lunches, bulk is best.

Speaker:

I do the prep work on the weekend, and

Speaker:

during the week, it's the responsibility

Speaker:

of the children to then pack the food

Speaker:

into their lunch boxes, add a cold

Speaker:

pack, and then add it to their bag.

Speaker:

For my house, I make fresh

Speaker:

sandwiches or rolls and then put

Speaker:

them into freezer proof reusable

Speaker:

containers and into the freezer.

Speaker:

And I normally do this

Speaker:

on a Saturday or Sunday.

Speaker:

I place cut up fruit and vegetables into

Speaker:

containers, into the fridge, as well

Speaker:

as whole fruit and veg in the pantry.

Speaker:

I have another box with

Speaker:

items such as muesli bars.

Speaker:

In the morning, the kids know to

Speaker:

pick out a sandwich, which will thaw

Speaker:

in their lunchbox before lunchtime,

Speaker:

and then also get themselves two

Speaker:

items of fruit or vegetables and

Speaker:

two items from the pantry box.

Speaker:

If you include yogurt or dairy in

Speaker:

their lunches, please make sure

Speaker:

to add a little ice pack to keep

Speaker:

these items at a safe temperature.

Speaker:

Children can also fill up

Speaker:

their own water bottles.

Speaker:

Packing their own lunchbox in the

Speaker:

morning takes the children under a

Speaker:

minute and gives them a sense of control

Speaker:

over their preparedness for the day.

Speaker:

Older children can start to help prepare

Speaker:

the lunches on the weekend as well.

Speaker:

First with you and then independently.

Speaker:

Leaving on time.

Speaker:

This is a biggie.

Speaker:

And I commonly hear that households

Speaker:

disintegrate into a rush of quick,

Speaker:

quick, quick with people yelling,

Speaker:

get dressed, get your shoes while

Speaker:

they're still packing lunches.

Speaker:

To remove this, set yourself a leaving

Speaker:

time And if you need to set yourself

Speaker:

a 10 minute warning alarm, do so.

Speaker:

make sure the time you set allows

Speaker:

you to get to wherever you need to

Speaker:

go with ample time and time to spare.

Speaker:

if you have a family that needs to

Speaker:

get out the door with you, make sure

Speaker:

that everybody knows that this is

Speaker:

the time you will all be leaving.

Speaker:

As age appropriate, make children

Speaker:

responsible for getting up at a certain

Speaker:

time and getting themselves ready.

Speaker:

And alarm can support them with this

Speaker:

again, as age appropriate, automate

Speaker:

the whole leaving process and shift

Speaker:

responsibility from you getting others

Speaker:

ready to them getting themselves ready.

Speaker:

You focus on your day, which is even

Speaker:

better because you have automated

Speaker:

some of your own preparations now too.

Speaker:

If you get to leaving time and

Speaker:

some of your morning chores

Speaker:

haven't been done, leave them.

Speaker:

The world won't fall apart.

Speaker:

However, do spend some time working out

Speaker:

how you could possibly automate these, or

Speaker:

even better how you could delegate these.

Speaker:

When is a better, less pressure time

Speaker:

to get them done for your household?

Speaker:

Now, if you share a house with others,

Speaker:

including sharing a bathroom, then a

Speaker:

morning schedule to make sure you are

Speaker:

not late because you're waiting for a

Speaker:

shower to be free may be very important.

Speaker:

It probably doesn't need to be as

Speaker:

detailed as Sheldon creates, if you know,

Speaker:

you know, but a conversation about the

Speaker:

coming week with your housemate will

Speaker:

remove surprise as unnecessary stress.

Speaker:

Next, the second big topic

Speaker:

of discussion is dinners.

Speaker:

There is a few ways to tackle this.

Speaker:

You could write out your list

Speaker:

for a week against each day.

Speaker:

Or because I change my mind a lot based

Speaker:

on how I feel, I prefer just to have a

Speaker:

list of meals to choose from and know

Speaker:

that every Thursday is a takeaway meal.

Speaker:

Again, bulk preparations on the

Speaker:

weekend create an easier week for me.

Speaker:

But if Monday and Tuesday are

Speaker:

your better days, put it in your

Speaker:

plan to do it sometime then.

Speaker:

I work out roughly what's

Speaker:

needed and I do a grocery order

Speaker:

online and have it delivered.

Speaker:

It saves me heaps of time and removes my

Speaker:

terrible habit of over shopping, which

Speaker:

I absolutely do if I go in store, also

Speaker:

factor in local markets and sourcing

Speaker:

produce from there, if you're able.

Speaker:

I love our monthly market.

Speaker:

now, if you are ready to get Uber

Speaker:

organized, you can place clear tubs

Speaker:

into your fridge and label them with

Speaker:

either the day of the week or the meal.

Speaker:

And after your groceries has arrived, you

Speaker:

can place items into each tub, on the day

Speaker:

you're going to cook it or for the meal

Speaker:

it is so that everything for your meal

Speaker:

is together and ready for you to prepare.

Speaker:

If you get to dinner time and the

Speaker:

thought of preparing the ingredients

Speaker:

and cooking makes you reach away for the

Speaker:

takeaway menus more than you would like.

Speaker:

Have a look at how you can

Speaker:

apply the automation rule.

Speaker:

Can you bulk cut up the vegetables

Speaker:

or proteins and have them

Speaker:

ready in containers to cook?

Speaker:

Or should you bulk cook meals

Speaker:

and have them ready for yourself

Speaker:

to heat up during midweek?

Speaker:

I do both because by midweek my diary is

Speaker:

full and I find that by the time dinner

Speaker:

time comes around I am running on empty.

Speaker:

So automation is the key to

Speaker:

my dinner success midweek.

Speaker:

There are so many examples of activities

Speaker:

in your life you can automate.

Speaker:

Today we have just touched on a few,

Speaker:

but the key takeaways from today are

Speaker:

really to work out your stress points

Speaker:

and see what you can do to remove them.

Speaker:

Continually reassess, was

Speaker:

that the day of my dreams?

Speaker:

I felt organized and carefree, or

Speaker:

are there improvements to make?

Speaker:

A bit of extra organization on the

Speaker:

days of the week where you have more

Speaker:

time pays dividends to your physical

Speaker:

and mental health during the week.

Speaker:

Some final considerations.

Speaker:

Delegate as much as you are able.

Speaker:

Children should be involved with getting

Speaker:

themselves ready from a young age.

Speaker:

While it's amazing to nurture them

Speaker:

and look after them, you are doing

Speaker:

them a disservice by not teaching them

Speaker:

and supporting them to safely learn

Speaker:

how to contribute to the household.

Speaker:

Children should be dressing themselves

Speaker:

as soon as they express a desire

Speaker:

to, and this can be quite young.

Speaker:

As long as we are there to help them

Speaker:

with the tricky bits, it's more than

Speaker:

fine to allow kids to dress themselves.

Speaker:

And by school age, this

Speaker:

should be expected.

Speaker:

And kids are super capable.

Speaker:

Have them making their beds and

Speaker:

keeping their space in For younger

Speaker:

kids, get them to help with tasks such

Speaker:

as folding towels and then increase

Speaker:

responsibilities as age appropriate.

Speaker:

Being really organized allows

Speaker:

you to then be really flexible.

Speaker:

And it's funny because people

Speaker:

don't commonly associate the two.

Speaker:

I hear from a lot of people

Speaker:

that don't want to get organized

Speaker:

because they don't want to be

Speaker:

that rigid, but it's the opposite.

Speaker:

Removing your stress points

Speaker:

through simple organization

Speaker:

suddenly opens you up to more, more

Speaker:

options, more chances, more fun.

Speaker:

You find that you remove

Speaker:

the unnecessaries.

Speaker:

The time wasters, the

Speaker:

dependencies, and you start to

Speaker:

live your life on your terms.

Speaker:

And that's the best way to really

Speaker:

start to experience the world.

Speaker:

Remember that nothing changes.

Speaker:

If nothing changes, wishing for a

Speaker:

calmer day, won't work, but you have

Speaker:

the power to create it for yourself.

Speaker:

And that truly is a gift.

Speaker:

I hope you give yourself.

Speaker:

I can't wait to hear how you are removing

Speaker:

stresses from your every day until next

Speaker:

time, live your best balanced life.
