What Is Keeping You From Finishing Well?

What does it really mean to finish well?

We often think of finishing well as reaching the end of a career, completing a project, building a successful business, or even coming to the later seasons of life with something to show for the journey.

But perhaps finishing well isn't simply about reaching the finish line.

It's about the kind of person who arrives there.

In today's Reading Room, we begin Chapter 9 of Dr. Henry Cloud's Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality and enter a new character dimension: Getting Results.

Cloud makes a powerful observation: plenty of people know what to do. They have intelligence, education, experience, talent, opportunity, and sometimes tremendous resources.

Yet they don't always produce the results their gifts seem capable of producing.

Why?

Because, as Cloud puts it:

“All things being equal, character wins.”

And that opened the door to a very personal conversation.

We talk about knowing who you really are—and just as importantly, knowing who you aren't. There is a surprising humility in recognizing both our strengths and our limitations. Sometimes the breakthrough isn't acquiring another skill or another resource. Sometimes we need a character shift.

We also explore Cloud's wonderfully simple progression:

READY. AIM. FIRE.

Are we willing to do the unglamorous work of getting ready?

Can we focus our limited time, energy, and resources instead of chasing every new shiny object?

And after we've prepared and focused, do we finally have the courage to pull the trigger?

Or are we still getting ready to get ready?

Along the way, I share stories from my own management career, lessons I've observed from friends Jeff and Valerie King and their coffee business, thoughts about the struggles of my Seattle Mariners, and even a lesson from Civil War General George B. McClellan—a brilliant and well-prepared commander who sometimes struggled to act.

Finally, we wrestle with another difficult dimension of character: the willingness to make the hard call.

Leadership, parenting, business, relationships, and life itself eventually put us in situations where love and responsibility may require decisions other people won't like. Sometimes helping someone and enabling someone are separated by a very thin—and uncomfortable—line.

This Reading Room ran longer than usual because this chapter touched so many places in my own life. If 55 minutes is more than you have available at once, feel free to listen in two parts. There's plenty here to marinate on.

As we close, consider these questions:

Where is your magnifying glass pointed right now?

Are your limited time, energy, and resources focused long enough in one place to actually produce something?

Are you still getting ready to get ready?

Have you prepared enough that it's finally time to fire?

Are you willing to make the hard call when love, responsibility, or stewardship requires it?

And perhaps most importantly:

What is keeping you from finishing well—something you don't have, or something in your character that still needs to grow?

Finishing well doesn't mean looking backward and discovering that we got everything right.

None of us did.

It means we're still willing to learn. Still willing to make a character shift. Still sharpening the saw. Still discovering where our energy belongs—and where it doesn't.

The question isn't whether we've made mistakes along the way.

The question is: What are we going to do with the wisdom those mistakes have given us?
