As they embark on this podcasting adventure, they invite listeners to join them in exploring the intersection of purpose, integrity, and entrepreneurships
Kurt, why are you here in this room with me right now?
Speaker A:What.
Speaker A:What is this thing that I. I don't even know what I'm talking about.
Speaker A:I don't know what these words are.
Speaker A:How about you start the conversation?
Speaker B:Well, Melody, I've been on a lot of podcasts, and just because of my background, people often have me on their podcasts to be able to talk about things like tactics and best practices and ways to be more efficient and effective in being.
Speaker B:Being an entrepreneur, running a business, specifically in the home service business world.
Speaker B:And so when you invited me to come onto your podcast, the Business Misfits, I kind of went on there just expecting it to go like most podcasts.
Speaker B:And it.
Speaker B:We did.
Speaker B:We.
Speaker B:We did talk about business, for sure, but about halfway through this, we were going pretty deep.
Speaker B:And normally people will turn me around and go, hey, let's get back to the business side of things.
Speaker B:But it was just so refreshing to be able to talk to my friend Melody.
Speaker B:You know, we've been friends for.
Speaker B:For well over a decade in a.
Speaker B:In the business side of things, but we've also had a friendship that's developed over time, and it allowed us to go really deep into some topics, like belief in a.
Speaker B:In a higher power.
Speaker B:We kind of talked about religion and some struggles and some things that we'd overcome.
Speaker B:And it occurred to me, halfway through, I actually invited myself and said, melody, we should do a podcast.
Speaker B:And the reason that hit me is that we need to discover as entrepreneurs, what's on the inside of us and what's driving that, because the more we understand what's going on inside, the more power and ability it gives us to project out into the world through our business, the goodness, the things that we are intentionally wanting to make it out into the world.
Speaker B:And I don't think there's a lot of space for those types of discussions, but I just don't know of any entrepreneur podcasts that are based on sort of a spiritual longing.
Speaker A:This is an interesting podcast because it's not just about spirituality or religion.
Speaker A:It's why do we do business this way?
Speaker A:Well, some of it goes back to our early beliefs.
Speaker A:Some of it has to do with, you know, the integrity that we hold so dear and just the way we think people should be treated.
Speaker A:And sometimes it's the antithesis of what the business norm is in the business culture.
Speaker A:And so I spend a lot of time, even though my heart knows what the answer is, fighting back, feeling like a failure because I'm not doing business the way that people Say I should.
Speaker A:There's so much mindset stuff in business that you really can't almost be a seeker.
Speaker A:I feel like you can't be questioning a lot.
Speaker A:It looks like, to me that the people who are really successful on, like, a normal business world, they just hold their beliefs dear, or they say them like they do, and then they just like, follow through on whatever it is that that is.
Speaker A:And I don't do it that way.
Speaker A:I do in a way.
Speaker A:I believe in people first.
Speaker A:You know, I'm very mission purpose driven, and I guess that always comes first in the end.
Speaker A:But I wish at times I was more businessy, more cutthroat.
Speaker B:Yeah, so.
Speaker B:So there's business principles.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:And then I know that the boring way of framing our podcast is that.
Speaker A:We'Re in ethics and, you know, integrity, you know, business integrity.
Speaker B:But I think that what's important to realize is that the people who hold fast to business principles and allow ethics to sort of be second place is that they miss out, I think, on the ability to answer the bigger questions that will drive these little small decisions.
Speaker B:Entrepreneurs in a very unique situation.
Speaker B:My guess is that we probably make about 10 times the number of decisions a day as the average person who's already making a lot of decisions every day.
Speaker B:We also have influence that most people would not have, and it's not limited to just internally within our companies.
Speaker B:It's what our company's external influences on our customers and the people who are even thinking about doing business with us.
Speaker B:So what happens is that there's a really lagging indicator because of what we are finding on the inside and pushing out.
Speaker B:It moves through all these channels, and it could be years that these thousands of decisions that you made today will start sort of paying dividends, or if you ignore them, it could be a long period of time before you reap something that maybe you didn't mean to sow.
Speaker B:So, yeah, it's a tricky thing to combine the two topics that we are, which is bigger purpose, meaning of life, personally combined with entrepreneurship.
Speaker B:But that's exactly why this podcast needs to be.
Speaker A:And what I love is our topics are very.
Speaker A:They vary all over the place.
Speaker A:We talk about my favorite topic, which is selling without selling your soul.
Speaker B:AI.
Speaker B:We talked about the implications of AI.
Speaker B:Both of us share our backgrounds.
Speaker B:We both ironically have cult in.
Speaker A:In our spiritual in different ways.
Speaker B:Yeah, very different.
Speaker B:But I think that that's kind of interesting for people to know that we have sort of been in that.
Speaker B:Lumped into that category.
Speaker B:And also we can see it for what it is now.
Speaker B:And there's a lot that we've recorded that I think is going to be super interesting.
Speaker B:But I'm really excited to find out about the community that we build and what other people are in this tribe that we never would have crossed paths with had we not done this, and even getting them onto the podcast with us.
Speaker B:Because one of the things that I love about you, Melody, is your curiosity and your willingness to take these really hard questions without feeling that you're being attacked with what you believe by hearing someone's passion and what they believe.
Speaker B:And I think that even though you and I do end up agreeing along a lot of things, I think both of us have that really open mind and that super curious instinct that will allow us to have super interesting conversations with wildly different believing people who are can be within our own community.
Speaker A:Yeah, I'm excited for that.
Speaker A:I think the other thing that I really love is you and I are not afraid to be very vulnerable and talk about things that we've done that we wish we hadn't or situations we've been in.
Speaker A:And just like the situations that come up in business, they just are crazy sometimes.
