Eric G kicks off this lively mid-week update with a shout-out to his co-host John Dudley, who’s hitting the big 5-6. Can you believe it? Another trip around the sun for Johnny boy! Eric shares a blast from the past, recounting how they met back in the early 2000s, bonding over home improvement shenanigans and a bit of drama from their television days. The nostalgia is real, folks! But don’t worry, we’re not just here for birthday celebrations. Eric swiftly dives into some pressing home issues, like recalls on household products. Spoiler alert: it’s not just your average stuff; we're talking about hot pressure washers and sketchy gas cans. Seriously, who designed a gas can that doesn’t work? It’s like inventing a toaster that doesn't toast. Eric’s got your back, though, reminding listeners to stay updated with the latest recalls to keep their homes safe. Now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of home renovations. Ever wondered how long a kitchen or bath remodel really takes? Eric takes a stand against those absurd claims of ‘two-day remodels’ and ‘five-day kitchen transformations.’ Yeah, right! He breaks it down like a pro, explaining the real timelines that come with these projects. From demos to inspections, you can forget about quick fixes if you want quality. He’s all about keeping it real, warning that a good bathroom remodel can easily stretch to a month. And kitchens? Don’t even think about it being less than six weeks. Eric’s insights are both practical and a tad sarcastic – a reminder that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. So grab your tools, folks, and get ready for some serious home improvement talk!

Speaker A:G is here to guide you through.
Speaker B:The latest tips, tricks and trends.
Speaker B:So grab your toolbox, put on your thinking cap and let's get to work right here on around the House with.
Speaker A:Eric G. Welcome to the around the House show, your trusted source for everything about your home.
Speaker A:Thanks for joining me today.
Speaker A:First off, I wanted to say guys, Happy birthday number 56 to my co host John Dudley.
Speaker A: ck when she had to been early: Speaker A:I mean, shoot.
Speaker A:I did my first home improvement television show on a show called Designer Finals back in the day.
Speaker A:Now Designer Finals was an interesting one because there was a designer, my friend Brianne Rick, who I had worked with for years.
Speaker A:She wanted to go to college and she did.
Speaker A:If I remember right, I think of the college was like the Rocky Mountain School of Design thing like that.
Speaker A:Well, MTV Real World at the time had stopped production so they had brought on all the people from that.
Speaker A:Which means drama, which means all the stuff that I really kind of hate as far as hate is a strong word, but for this one it is.
Speaker A:I hate manufactured drama.
Speaker A:I'll never do it in a show.
Speaker A:And I didn't do it then either.
Speaker A:It was crazy.
Speaker A:So I had actually took.
Speaker A:We always give Kevin a hard time in the show, but Kevin's the guy that was Johnny's kind of salesperson, had some construction experience, all that stuff.
Speaker A:So Kevin, great guy, no problem with him.
Speaker A:We just like to poke a little fun at him.
Speaker A:But anyway, long story short, I get there and of course the production team creates all this drama.
Speaker A:They call the tile guy that was supposed to be there one day, told him to show up the next day even though we had already set it up.
Speaker A:They told us that we had three days to do this design and get it all built up and done.
Speaker A:Oh no, those were six hour days.
Speaker A:Those weren't 12 hour days.
Speaker A:They weren't construction days.
Speaker A:They cut our time for construction back by 50%.
Speaker A:So towards the end we knew there were some things on this project that there was just physically impossible to get done.
Speaker A:And the production team came up to me and said, okay, Eric as the design expert in this and Brianne being the, the student, we want you to make her cry.
Speaker A:I just looked at him, what?
Speaker A:No, I'm not getting paid for this so I can leave.
Speaker A:I'm not going to make my friend cry.
Speaker A:And make her look like the crying designer.
Speaker A:Never was going do that to her.
Speaker A:She was a good friend.
Speaker A:Wonder what happened to her.
Speaker A:I haven't seen her in years.
Speaker A:But anyway, long story short, Brianne was awesome.
Speaker A:Great to see her career because she was so talented.
Speaker A:Take off with that.
Speaker A:And the homeowners loved it.
Speaker A:But, you know, of course, that was the first time I learned that what you see on tv, what happened in the job site, aren't really the case.
Speaker A:But they went through and filmed it and it aired.
Speaker A:So I had stolen him, sheesh, 20 something years ago to do that.
Speaker A:And we did a lot of projects together.
Speaker A:And then Johnny had me helping manage his band, Dudley.
Speaker A:I was helping them get their album together, helping, you know, kind of design the album art, working on that kind of stuff.
Speaker A:And I was getting ready to fly out to Wellborn Cabinet in Anniston, Alabama area for a week of consultation.
Speaker A:Stuff that I was doing with them.
Speaker A:We were picking out next year's colors.
Speaker A:Johnny goes, hey, man, can you do me a favor?
Speaker A:I'm like, yeah, sure.
Speaker A:What?
Speaker A:He goes, I need a bass player.
Speaker A:He knew that I had been a bass player.
Speaker A:Hell, I hadn't played bass for 20 years.
Speaker A:At that point.
Speaker A:It seemed maybe 15, been a bit.
Speaker A:And he's like, we got a show in a week and a half.
Speaker A:We're playing one of our friends weddings, doing all our original stuff.
Speaker A:Might have to learn a couple songs.
Speaker A:And I'm like, dude, I'm gone next week.
Speaker A:That means I have a week of band practice and I'm in.
Speaker A:And I haven't played in 15 years.
Speaker A:What did I do?
Speaker A:Took my bass to me, with.
Speaker A:With me all the way to Alabama.
Speaker A:Did all that, got it knocked out, got it there.
Speaker A:Practiced in the evenings after dinner.
Speaker A:The nice thing is, is that is not a party town.
Speaker A:It was when we were there.
Speaker A:And the county that we kind of stayed in was a blue county.
Speaker A:So it wasn't like we were out having a good time at night.
Speaker A:So every night after dinner, I'd sit there and practice through the songs, you know, And I made it through, Made it through.
Speaker A:And it's fun, but Johnny and I have had our ups and downs since then and just.
Speaker A:Happy birthday, brother.
Speaker A:And that's why he.
Speaker A:His expertise is really great on the show and I enjoy having him on here.
Speaker A:So we'll put up a. I'll put up a Facebook poster in a little bit saying Happy birthday to Johnny.
Speaker A:So I wanted to talk today and Happy birthday, Johnny.
Speaker A:I wanted to talk today a little bit about timelines of construction projects.
Speaker A:Specifically, what does a bathroom and what does a kitchen model take to have somebody come in and do it?
Speaker A:First off, I am not a believer.
Speaker A:I am not a fan of the two day bathroom project.
Speaker A:I am not a fan of the five day kitchen remodel.
Speaker A:Because really you can't do that and do it well, in my opinion.
Speaker A:Because here's the thing, if you're going to do a bathroom remodel, you're going to have a day of demo, taking everything out, getting it cleaned up, getting it all done.
Speaker A:The problem is, is by the time you rip out the flooring, you got the walls, you got everything out of there that needs to come out of there.
Speaker A:Many times it's down to the studs because you got water damage, you need to move some electrical, you need to move some plumbing.
Speaker A:Many times it's just easier to take the drywall out and start over.
Speaker A:So you got something smooth to work with versus a lot of patches.
Speaker A:Contractor comes in, there's day one, day two, you're starting to do the repairs, getting stuff put together.
Speaker A:Maybe you've got an electrician out there and a plumber out there that's roughing in the new shower stuff, all that stuff.
Speaker A:Maybe that's a day or two because you don't want the electrician and the plumber in there.
Speaker A:That could be just a few days in itself.
Speaker A:And then you've got the permanent inspection for the rough ins for that.
Speaker A:So next up, maybe you'll get the shower guy in there and the shower guy is going to go in there and you know him or her, whoever's doing your tile work in there is going to come in there and do the floor, gonna do the shower system maybe or the, you know, tub with a tile surround around it.
Speaker A:There's another solid week plus in there by the time they go in there, even with foam board going in there.
Speaker A:Because what they got to do is they got to build it out and then they're gonna have to water test it.
Speaker A:So I have to put the water in the bottom call for the inspection to make sure it doesn't leak.
Speaker A:They'll come out and do the shower inspection on that, then they can lay tile, then they're gonna let that dry, they'll lay grout, they'll caulk it, then you'll get your shower door people in there.
Speaker A:So really, when it comes all the way down to it, if everybody's working and it's not a massive, huge bathroom with a lot of big changes, that's A month.
Speaker A:It just really is.
Speaker A:And the same thing when it gets to a kitchen.
Speaker A:You've got electrical, you got plumbing, you got a two days, probably a demo in there because you got a lot of other stuff going on.
Speaker A:By the time you get that cleaned out and then start putting stuff back into it, you're six weeks quickly on a kitchen remodel.
Speaker A:You just are.
Speaker A:You got cabinets, you got countertops.
Speaker A:Because like, if you're getting stoned many times all the countertops will come in.
Speaker A:Awesome.
Speaker A:They'll come in, cabinets are in, you'll do the template.
Speaker A:They've got that scheduled.
Speaker A:Even if they're templating the day after the cabinets go in, then you're waiting another week to 10 days to get them to come back out.
Speaker A:So there's two weeks right there usually to go from template to install.
Speaker A:And then after that you've got the plumber because you got a sink.
Speaker A:So you're six to 12 weeks on a massive kitchen model, depending on what you got going.
Speaker A:It's just really that simple.
Speaker A:So I don't want you guys out there to fall for the, you know, the, oh, you can get that remodel done in two days.
Speaker A:It just doesn't happen fast.
Speaker A:Rarely equates to high quality.
Speaker A:Now you'll see people like the Jacuzzi bath guys out there.
Speaker A:No, no shade thrown to them.
Speaker A:But all they're coming in there is there a lot of these one day bath companies are coming in there is.
Speaker A:You're just covering up the old stuff that's in the wall.
Speaker A:They'll snap over panels or the top of stuff or they'll rip it out and snap in new panels in there.
Speaker A:But really you're just putting acrylic panels up.
Speaker A:That's the shower wall system.
Speaker A:And it's a snap and go.
Speaker A:They charge you a ton of money and off you go.
Speaker A:And many times that works, that really works well for like hotels and things like that or rentals where, hey, I want you to come in, get in, get out.
Speaker A:And we're just less intrusive that way.
Speaker A:So everything has its place.
Speaker A:But a good solid remodel, it's going to take you a bit.
Speaker A:So just don't fall victim to the, hey, we're going to do a quick and fast.
Speaker A:Quick and fast is not what you're looking for.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's going to be troubling.
Speaker A:It's going to be a pain.
Speaker A:And many times, like when the kitchen comes out, I've even seen some builders now out there, some remodelers that have turned around and bought these kitchen trailers.
Speaker A:They're like RVs with kitchens in them.
Speaker A:They can pull up and you can use that while your kitchen's out.
Speaker A:And I'm like, brilliant things, guys.
Speaker A:Brilliant.
Speaker A:That works so well.
Speaker A:All right, everybody, well, let's take a look real quick and see what we have here for all of our recalls right now.
Speaker A:Because that's always an interesting one when I'm looking to see what's going on out there.
Speaker A:Because there's always some interesting stuff.
Speaker A:And this week is no different.
Speaker A:If we start out, you know, last week we had mentioned that Northern Tool and Equipment had their hot pressure washers recalled.
Speaker A:Bunch of vitamins and the usual suspects.
Speaker A:The swimming pools, the kids stuff, that kind of thing.
Speaker A:You see all that stuff almost.
Speaker A:If you've got kids just every week, go on and take a look at the CPSC.gov and see what they have.
Speaker A:There's other stuff in here.
Speaker A:I'm seeing children bike helmets that are failing.
Speaker A:You're seeing a bunch of furniture that they don't have tied off to the wall.
Speaker A:Gets a little more interesting when you're looking at the scepter fuel containers.
Speaker A:So gas cans.
Speaker A:The recalled fuel containers violate the mandatory safety standards for portable fuel containers because they lack flame mitigation devices.
Speaker A:Yeah, they came up with a gas can that doesn't work, of course.
Speaker A:And I hate this safety stuff.
Speaker A:There is one great gas can out there.
Speaker A:We'll talk about that in another one.
Speaker A:But I've only found one gas can company that actually makes something that's actually gonna work if you go to use it.
Speaker A:So be prepared out there with gas cans, it seems that as they make them safer, they're just used.
Speaker A:They're just as useless as ever with those.
Speaker A:Airova Air Ova recalls Aerovine air purifiers Due to fire and burn hazards.
Speaker A:There's about 191,000 of these things so they can overheat and ignite, posing fire and burn hazers to consumers.
Speaker A:Get a hold of Those guys again.
Speaker A:CPSC.gov for that again, tons of furniture.
Speaker A:Holy smokes.
Speaker A:It's just crazy how much of those things that are out there.
Speaker A:Arterion recalls pure steam Elite travel steamers and mighty little steamers.
Speaker A:Due to rask of serious burn, they can start spitting out hot water that is burn.
Speaker A:There's about 75,000 of those.
Speaker A:And the pure stream mighty, there's about 119,000 of those.
Speaker A:So you want to stop using those.
Speaker A:Submit the recall request, and that pretty much takes care of everything.
Speaker A:On here.
Speaker A:That is of note that I see today to see what we have out there because, you know, there's always stuff out there.
Speaker A:But I just like to give you each week when we do our midweek update here, what's going on out there?
Speaker A:All right, everybody, well have a great rest of the week this weekend.

Speaker A:It is the super bowl victory parade happening today in Seattle.
Speaker A:I'm super excited for that up there for those guys.
Speaker A:They deserve it.
Speaker A:And you know, to all you other football fans out there, no shade on other teams.
Speaker A:We all have our teams and I'm not going to make fun of you today.
