Speaker:

dawn-t: welcome to Creative.

2

:

Creative.

3

:

I'm Dawn

4

:

Ruth: Hi, I am Ruth

5

:

dawn-t: and we're

figuring out what this is.

6

:

It's a new podcast.

7

:

Ruth: yes.

8

:

yes.

9

:

It's called Created Creative, the podcast,

and we're so glad that you're here.

10

:

dawn-t: but the website

11

:

is Created creative podcast.

12

:

Ruth: I haven't even looked at it yet.

13

:

dawn-t: there's nothing there.

14

:

We own it though.

15

:

We own it.

16

:

Ruth: Excellent.

17

:

Created creative.

18

:

Thank you for naming it.

19

:

dawn-t: I think of you

as more clever than me,

20

:

Ruth: oh,

21

:

I don't know about that, but I felt

like it is good 'cause it's a good

22

:

play on words, addresses what we

wanna talk about , creative people

23

:

and how the spirit drives that.

24

:

dawn-t: Yes.

25

:

I love that you chose

'cause I thought about.

26

:

Creator.

27

:

but we are talking about people who have

a belief that there is some other entity

28

:

out there we call God, but whatever

sort of spirit, there's a creator

29

:

that created us and we were created

creative, like it's always been true.

30

:

Ruth: Mm-Hmm.

31

:

, yes.

32

:

That we are created to create things

. That, that's just part of our fundamental

33

:

that That makes us who we are.

34

:

dawn-t: Have you seen that study?

35

:

That if you ask kindergartners who's

creative, and they all raise their hand,

36

:

and then if you ask high school seniors,

it'll be like two people who draw well.

37

:

Ruth: Mm-Hmm.

38

:

Yes.

39

:

remember reading about that

in . Unless we're an expert in

40

:

something, we think we're not that.

41

:

But no, all of us are creative

people just in different ways.

42

:

dawn-t: I'm excited to hear the stories

because these will be people who have

43

:

the creative part of their life in

various percentages of their life.

44

:

Ruth: Mm-Hmm?

45

:

?

dawn-t: some will be full time and some will be like, this is what I do,

46

:

five hours a month on the side and

47

:

everything in between.

48

:

Ruth: And we get hear about their process.

49

:

And what I love is times when some

of those creative people give you an

50

:

opportunity to coach them a little bit.

51

:

and then I get secondhand coaching

from from when you're talking to them.

52

:

dawn-t: As will the listener, I guess.

53

:

That is probably pretty unique to

this podcast that we're doing real

54

:

time coaching or brainstorming with

the guests who invite us to do that.

55

:

Ruth: Yeah.

56

:

because you bring a lot of experience with

57

:

coaching to this.

58

:

How long have you been doing it now?

59

:

Coaching

60

:

dawn-t: Nearly 20 years.

61

:

I had been working in churches

and had the master's from Luther

62

:

Seminary and got a second master's in

organizational psychology in New York.

63

:

And within that I learned about

executive coaching and there

64

:

was just this little whisper of

something new called life coaching.

65

:

And as soon as I heard it, I was

like, that's the thing, because

66

:

the executive coaching stayed

within the walls of the job.

67

:

And life coaching was more universal.

68

:

And So, I was one of the very first

ones within the first a hundred

69

:

people to be national board certified

70

:

as a coach.

71

:

So it's been a while

72

:

Ruth: Yeah, I know that.

73

:

It was the first time I had ever heard

of the term life coach was when you

74

:

started doing it, I was like,

what is this newfangled thing?

75

:

dawn-t: I used to have to

tell people what it is.

76

:

Now I have to tell

people how I'm different

77

:

than all the other life coaches,

which basically I mostly coach of

78

:

churches, nonprofits, and small

business owners, which you are

79

:

small business owner.

80

:

You're like an amazing

small business owner.

81

:

Ruth: Well, , thank you.

82

:

dawn-t: Tell us more.

83

:

Everybody needs to know.

84

:

Ruth: Well, I love my small business.

85

:

I started in 2020.

86

:

I had been a pastor for many,

many years and always had been

87

:

interested in different things

and I had different things.

88

:

I had always done things on the

side, like writing and whatnot.

89

:

But then in 2020, . I Had gotten this

idea to start a subscription box for

90

:

ministers and on a Facebook group,

I just put the word out, and there

91

:

was a really warm reception to it.

92

:

And so I thought, well, why not?

93

:

Try and still to this day, I'm

surprised at what a great reception

94

:

it's had and how we've sent Consecrates

to people all around the United

95

:

States and all around the world.

96

:

And just grown and grown.

97

:

And it's been fun because a lot of

the things that I curate are from

98

:

other ministers who make things,

and so . I love encouraging other

99

:

ministers as they are brought to

life by these side projects they have.

100

:

And then other small

businesses contribute as well.

101

:

But it's been a great way to meet

people and to just open up my own

102

:

Track 1: world too.

103

:

too

104

:

.

dawn-t: feels very much like a community.

105

:

Not many businesses are so good

at having a point of view.

106

:

And then drawing in people who want

to be a part of that point of view.

107

:

And then meeting each other.

108

:

As we've interviewed people, they're

saying, oh, I met them through Consecrate.

109

:

So you're doing all this other

stuff to help people interact.

110

:

Ruth: Yeah, it's been really fun and

I didn't expect any of that, but it's

111

:

been so very organic how people have

made connections through the box and

112

:

now in January we're having a trip.

113

:

Some of us who are part of Consecrate

are going on a trip to Belize , all of

114

:

these things that I hadn't expected.

115

:

We have a book group.

116

:

People that I've never met face to

face, but they feel like friends

117

:

just because , we communicate

through being part of Consecrate.

118

:

dawn-t: It's so funny too.

119

:

both ended up as these small business

owners, and when I met you, that

120

:

never would've been What I assumed.

121

:

Life is funny how it goes on a track

122

:

Ruth: It is.

123

:

dawn-t: And,

124

:

here we are reconnected.

125

:

Ruth: and you were so nice too, the

very first box, I remember I asked you

126

:

if you would put something in there, to

127

:

share with people about your life

coaching and you put together this

128

:

cool little thing for Advent, I

129

:

remember.

130

:

dawn-t: hmm.

131

:

Ruth: put it in there.

132

:

And so, , we've had, I think

a couple times we've shared

133

:

about your business in the

134

:

box.

135

:

And that's been

136

:

dawn-t: you

137

:

for doing that.

138

:

I, I get really good people.

139

:

Whenever somebody sets up an

intro session, I always say,

140

:

how did we find each other?

141

:

And the best people are like,

you were in the consecrated box,

142

:

so you're drawing a good crowd,

143

:

Ruth: Oh, good.

144

:

Well, I'm really glad to hear that

because of course it adds value to the box

145

:

when I'm able to put you an offer from.

146

:

from a coach in there.

147

:

So thank you for doing that.

148

:

yeah,

149

:

you and I, our paths go way back.

150

:

We've known each other a long time

151

:

dawn-t: right out of college?

152

:

Ruth: Mm-Hmm.

153

:

dawn-t: I think.

154

:

Ruth: yeah.

155

:

dawn-t: So we both did.

156

:

This organization that's now defunct,

Lutheran Youth Encounter, may it rest in

157

:

peace.

158

:

So Lutheran youth encounters like

traveling and doing a combo of camp songs

159

:

Ruth: Yep.

160

:

dawn-t: games and puppet shows

161

:

Ruth: I know, now looking back or

when you try to explain it to anybody

162

:

who doesn't know it, it sounds

so lame, but I remember, I just

163

:

thought I was the coolest person

ever when I got accepted to do it.

164

:

dawn-t: Yeah was a reality show where

people were traveling around in a

165

:

van and I was like, I've already

166

:

done it.

167

:

Ruth: exactly.

168

:

We

169

:

dawn-t: You travel a whole

year in a van with eight people

170

:

Ruth: right?

171

:

It's like big deal.

172

:

We did that.

173

:

dawn-t: We went six town a week,

174

:

sometimes

175

:

Ruth: Yep.

176

:

dawn-t: up our own band

equipment, do the gig,

177

:

stay with members of the congregation.

178

:

Ruth: Yep.

179

:

Staying with host

180

:

families.

181

:

Oh.

182

:

my gosh.

183

:

The stories I was trying to remember

which part of the country you traveled

184

:

in.

185

:

dawn-t: I was North Central,

186

:

so Minnesota and North and

South Dakota and the edges of

187

:

Iowa, Wisconsin, and Canada.

188

:

Ruth: yeah.

189

:

My first team was North Central too.

190

:

dawn-t: Oh,

191

:

so you know,

192

:

and you did somewhere in Africa

193

:

Ruth: Yeah.

194

:

Then I did Crossfire to West

Africa, the second team.

195

:

Yeah.

196

:

But it was funny because the first

team , I didn't know until I left

197

:

for training I was gonna be on an

international team or a national team.

198

:

And

199

:

dawn-t: Oh my gosh.

200

:

Ruth: I was saying all these

grand goodbyes and then we

201

:

basically were traveling through

my hometown every couple

202

:

weeks, on North Central.

203

:

So I was like, oh, okay.

204

:

Well I'm still here.

205

:

dawn-t: Hi.

206

:

Yeah,

207

:

Whenever I meet someone from the Dakotas

and they're like, You haven't heard

208

:

of my town, and I'm like, I might have

209

:

Ruth: Yeah.

210

:

dawn-t: I might have,

211

:

done a concert there

212

:

and slept in someone's house.

213

:

Ruth: Yeah,

214

:

dawn-t: whenever I play two truths

and a lie, now I'm gonna give it away.

215

:

But I often say I've slept

in over 400 people's homes,

216

:

Ruth: yeah,

217

:

dawn-t: it sounds unrealistic,

218

:

but it's true.

219

:

Ruth: It is true.

220

:

Those were good years though.

221

:

I, liked doing that but it

was a little while ago now,

222

:

dawn-t: And then we both went to the

same seminary, so we overlapped there.

223

:

Ruth: Yep.

224

:

We did, we overlapped at seminary,

so I always knew who you were and

225

:

then I'd been a pastor for a while

and I remember I got back in touch

226

:

with you 'cause I wanted coaching.

227

:

dawn-t: Yes.

228

:

Yeah, that was fun.

229

:

Ruth: you were my coach for a little while

230

:

dawn-t: And that right around when

you were leaving to be on a reality

231

:

show, because that's normal for a

232

:

pastor

233

:

Ruth: Right.

234

:

Oh, by the way,

235

:

Track 1: guess what, Dawn, now,

236

:

Ruth: I'm going to Norway

to be in a reality show.

237

:

It was called Alt for Norge,

and longer exists either.

238

:

It was on for 10 seasons though,

in Norway, and , it actually

239

:

won the Norwegian equivalent

of the Emmy award many times.

240

:

Because it was very,

very popular in Norway.

241

:

Yeah.

242

:

And it was basically US citizens

who went over to Norway to learn

243

:

about Norwegian culture and to find

out about , your own roots too.

244

:

And so you got to see like home

place where your ancestors came from.

245

:

It was really cool thing to be a part of.

246

:

dawn-t: Was it a thing

247

:

you Could win.

248

:

Ruth: Yes.

249

:

There was a winner for each

season and I was not the winner

250

:

dawn-t: Oh.

251

:

I'm still impressed that you did it.

252

:

I don't care that you didn't win.

253

:

Ruth: It was really fun.

254

:

You can watch old episodes on YouTube.

255

:

All for Noga.

256

:

dawn-t: Okay.

257

:

Ruth: Yeah.

258

:

dawn-t: Maybe we'll put

a link in the show notes.

259

:

Ruth: No, no, don't put it . Don't

260

:

dawn-t: you're gonna

make people work for it.

261

:

Ruth: But what I think you should,

put a link in the show notes to

262

:

your web series that you created

263

:

dawn-t: Oh my gosh.

264

:

Ruth: and that Talk about that.

265

:

dawn-t: It is called A Dairy Tale and

the tail is like fairytale, not the

266

:

tail of the cow, T-A-L-E-A dairy tale.

267

:

And we filmed three seasons in

Wisconsin on location with the cows.

268

:

like the office, if your office were a

barn and, these characters that are in

269

:

a town that is struggling to get, its.

270

:

Footing.

271

:

It is true that Wisconsin is losing

a lot of family farms and so that

272

:

affects everything else in the town.

273

:

So it all started that I do professional

musical, like we're flown out from

274

:

New York City to do this thing.

275

:

And, we do it a lot.

276

:

Thus I am in these random towns with

the same people year after year.

277

:

So one year I was like, you know

what we should do while we're there?

278

:

Ruth: Oh,

279

:

dawn-t: make a web series.

280

:

Ruth: I love that.

281

:

And then not unlike

many creative endeavors.

282

:

Once we decided to do a web series,

we just did it using what we had

283

:

around us, which was the cows.

284

:

Ruth: Yeah.

285

:

I

286

:

can't believe I haven't

watched it yet, but I'm,

287

:

I'm going to now, now it's on my

288

:

dawn-t: We would be

289

:

Advertising it on the local affiliates

of N-P-R-A-B-C-N-B-C, all these

290

:

different places their morning

shows, and then they'd us about the

291

:

cows and we wouldn't know anything.

292

:

sorry.

293

:

We're the city people pretending

294

:

Ruth: Yeah, what a great idea though.

295

:

just like this is a great idea that you

also came up with to do this podcast.

296

:

dawn-t: I just kind of pitched like

seven ideas and you were like, podcast,

297

:

that's what we're doing.

298

:

So thank you for the encouragement.

299

:

'cause I never would've done it on my own.

300

:

Ruth: I feel the same way.

301

:

I've done these mini interviews of some of

the creators who put things in the box.

302

:

I've

303

:

done it on Instagram Live, but I

really needed someone who had, skills

304

:

and the drive to actually turn this

into something and God just put you

305

:

right in my path.

306

:

So here we

307

:

are,

308

:

dawn-t: here we are.

309

:

And We both need each

other for this to work.

310

:

Ruth: I know, and I'm really

excited to see because these first

311

:

conversations that we've done,

312

:

they're so interesting.

313

:

So I

314

:

can't wait to see what else happens down

315

:

the road.

316

:

dawn-t: So what are we

wanting our listeners to get?

317

:

, why would someone listen I've all

thought about why it's fun for us,

318

:

Ruth: yeah.

319

:

dawn-t: Why would someone

else wanna listen?

320

:

Like

321

:

Ruth: Well, I think that, like I said,

it's been so interesting to hear the

322

:

process that these people going through

as they're creating things and as they're

323

:

thinking about taking the next steps.

324

:

And I learned so much from it, so I

can't help but imagine our listeners

325

:

will learn a lot from it as well.

326

:

What do you think?

327

:

dawn-t: I think it's encouraging.

328

:

and interesting to hear someone just like

them that made space for it in their

329

:

regular life without any extra resources

like not the celebrity talk and Just

330

:

said, this is a need of my spirit and

I'm gonna be creative, and they're doing

331

:

Ruth: Oh my goodness.

332

:

Isn't that key.

333

:

That is so important, because , all

of these people, they're working

334

:

their regular jobs, but they're also

creating beautiful things and it's

335

:

feeding something deep in their

souls and it's a gift to the world.

336

:

dawn-t: hold hopefully people

listening to this as you said, you're

337

:

getting some secondary coaching.

338

:

I hope they are too.

339

:

I think some of the things

they bring up are universal

340

:

Ruth: Oh, very much.

341

:

Very much so.

342

:

could apply to their job,

but just to life in general.

343

:

some of the quotes that have come

out of it are like, oh, well that's

344

:

just good life advice right there.

345

:

You know,

346

:

dawn-t: I can make a T-shirt

out of everybody's episode.

347

:

Ruth: yes.

348

:

and I like that we are talking to

people from different denominations

349

:

as well, and there'll probably

be some people down the road who

350

:

aren't even part of a denomination

351

:

and

352

:

I think that it's going to be

something that'll be of interest

353

:

to a wide variety of people.

354

:

dawn-t: I am excited to see what sort

you're so good at building community

355

:

and I am obsessed with community.

356

:

I can't wait to see what

community forms around this.

357

:

Ruth: Yeah, it's true.
